I don't want to say it but I have to. Diablo 3 and Diablo 4 had the right idea when it comes to campaign. You can either do the campaign or choose "Adventure mode" aka do what you want, when you want. Almost like a sandbox ARPG. Same with D4, you can skip the campaign and play how you want. Unfortunately, D3/D4 aren't exactly good in the other departments. Sometimes bad games have good ideas then they are overlooked because they were bad games. Last Epoch would do just fine with an "Adventure Mode", play how you want, when you want.

D4 is D3 but worse. The open world map is too large and pointless other than I guess doing the boring ah helltides and the world bosses every X hours.
In fact D3 at the point it is now is at least worth playing for a week. I can't stand to even play D4 beyond naming my character.
But yes I do agree with the whole adventure mode thing. While most probably wouldn't agree, I'd love an adventure mode type of thing in both LE and PoE. Maybe make it so the first char you play in each league = play through campaign but then subsequent chars you play get given a choice of doing campaign vs skipping it for straight up endgame content.

Finally gave D4 a legit shot, while waiting for 1.0 to drop. I barely got to WT3 but its been pretty enjoyable. Coming from LE it sucks that theres no loot filter or ID from the ground.

D4 is okay, it just has a lot of little issues that add up in my view. For me, not being able to really adjust/customize skills in any meaningful gameplay/visual way is an enormous negative. It means I can't really "create" a build that is both thematically/visually satisfying and enjoyable from a gameplay perspective. Unless I find a legendary effect or a unique (And even those are extraordinarily limited). So I could (and did) go a couple hundred hours with a "build" that is going nowhere, fast, and be dissatisfied with the game as a result.
It also doesn't help that the "end game" is essentially too limited to feel any meaningful progression from. Do NM dungeons in order to.... do the exact same NM dungeons?
On top of that, itemization is a mess. Most of the affixes have nebulous conditionals that make no sense to an ordinary player. "Do more damage to far enemies whilst singing the pledge of allegiance naked in the rain on a Tuesday in July". I mean there's confusing, and then there's just obtuse. I have very little faith that the folks that created Diablo 4 are capable of untangling that mess, especially since they're the ones who made the mess in the first place.

my usual way is get to a4 -> do monos until i can use most of my strongest build to get my char where i want it -> do temp sanctum -> a9 -> endgame
the "do monos" part can be extended for weaker builds until t1 sanc is easy enough
