By design, people are meant to be spending favor so they can rank up. So buying and selling is always the best way

No, some are very valuable and the way you know is by just...Knowing, AKA experience, looking it up, etc.

Red ring of Altaria is a very rare one for example. Why? Because it has a very low drop chance and a very strong effect for many builds

https://www.lastepochtools.com/db/ is a great website to look up items and see if they're rare or not. But rare does not equal good, the ones that are both are usually worth a lot.
Alternatively, look on build websites like Maxroll, find the builds that are popular/"S Tier" and look into the uniques and items in general the builds use

no, you always need to pay favour when buying or selling at the merchant's guild. only way to get it "only" using gold and crafting materials is buying bows at the vendor and use Rune of Ascendence until you hit it

No, only the implicit modifiers - for example: movement speed on a Red Ring. But you have to select Silver Ring (which is the base for the Red Ring). You might already know this but it took me a long time to figure it out.

Low basic uniques have aklready cratered in price, you missed the boat on that @fossil sleet, was only valuable in the first few days. Now it's only a few specific bases that are valuable, and usually the drop restricted ones.

Normally you would look up similar items on the bazaar and see what they're selling for. But right now the bazaar is so slow and crashing you may want to wait until when/if it is fixed or you can do what I do - take a guess at the value and list it at a slightly higher price.

I dont know. Maybe since you can now farm them by imprinting, it will lessen the demand. People will only need one to start with and imprint it, rather than need to buy or farm for 2. Having said that, I dont know how rare of a drop it is even when its imprinted. I tried imprinting a Legendary one but apparently it doesnt read it as a Red Ring if it's a Legendary and not a Unique.

They have affixes on them that are drop only, which means they can't be crafted

so a lot of your selling depends on a good exalted prefix

I am having an existential crisis about Merchant's guild, I was doing some crafting with Runes of Havoc on chests I bought from the auction house and theorycrafting which I should I imprint and I realized between this and all the weaver echoes that you sack uniques to possibly add LP and reroll the uniques that it really helps you target farm what you specifically need for your build and incrementally build towards BIS by yourself... and that I might not need to play MG anymore to minmax and I don't know how to feel about this. RNG is RNG. You can talk & theorize about probability, but if you're simply unlucky, you won't drop it. MG means you have an backup to being unlucky, that every drop you sold is guaranteed progress toward w/e item you want
