Not necessarily -- here's the way I see it:
Bigger gaming companies have a lot of budget at their disposal and know that they have a reliable fan base who would purchase their games regardless of the quality. So instead of trying to get more fans or increasing margins, AAA games thus tends to focus on who can release the best graphics (while squeezing as much $$ in the process)
Whereas Indie games don't have that existing fan base or a budget to showcase complex mechanics with impressive graphics so they must put their heart and soul towards making it appealing while maintaining affordability on the productio end of things (i.e., good writing, unique experience, etc.)
