to give you an update, tried ubuntu and was receiving the same looping issue. then decided to break out my thinkpad and try it on there, this time it didnt loop but went through quick and gave me a USB error. Tried different cables and ports, no luck. Then found a reddit thread suggesting running "sudo ./checkra1n -c" and lo and behold, im jailbroken!

I had the same/similar error when throwing some things on via ssh the other day, I ended up using nano to remove the joshtv.net repo, then readded it like this:

no, you cannot downgrade an Apple TV 4K, doesn't matter if signed or not

once you updated it's impossible to downgrade it (unless someone leaks IPSWs or something)

you can technically save OTA blobs for the 4K but they're also useless currently

we don't know why Apple is still signing 13.4.8 (or 10.2.2), it can be used to downgrade on the 4 (HD) but not the 4K

there are no IPSWs available for the Apple TV 4K, only OTA images, which cannot be used to downgrade

if normal restores don't work with signed versions, then futurerestore won't either, so unless you're holding out hope for IPSWs to leak or some other solution to appear, you will not be able to use any blobs you save on a 4K anyway

the ramdisk used to restore/update the device is simply different in OTA zips, it's not compatible with IPSWs

Apple TV 4K 2nd Gen [A12] is not currently jailbreakable as it shipped with 14.5 and is not vulnerable to checkm8

I'm not too experienced with 3rd gen or older, I think it's still somewhat usable but a bit dated and runs the older "Apple TV Software" rather than tvOS, and some apps may not be supported

@torpid kernel I have owned all versions of ATV. The 3rd gen is basically useless now unless you wish to solely airplay to it. I hate airplaying video, it defeats the purpose of having a box to view stuff not to mention the occasional lag and drop outs. Plus 3rd party app support is practically dead and gone. The version of Kodi that will install has no working repos.

The 4HD box is a no brainer option and there are tons available for purchase on used sites. Keep in mind it's 1080p so if your preference is 4k viewing (Netflix, Prime) or x265 encoding you will not want this box either. I love my 4k and if you can find one on 13.4.5 (good luck!) that is the sweet spot because you can jailbreak with unc0ver and resign with Reprovision. I will stay on 13.4.5 until the lights go out or we get a miracle jb for the 4k on tvOS 14/15.

You might only need an HD box then, most free IPTV services max out at 720-1080p. They are cheap streaming options but not reliable imo. I have four 4k's on 13.4.5 (3 I use, one as backup just in case one dies). You could try ebay but my suspicion is they are rare, most people that are not jailbreaking let their devices auto update.

Ya I've heard that before... I'm likely in the minority these days cause I could never get into watching tv on an iPhone and iPad. Just seems like a bad experience.

For the ATV2 and 3 there is the free Infuse app, but I had judder, some people don't see it but I do and it bugged me. I eventually went to the HD 4th gen and now use the 4k with the paid Infuse app.... I'm very satisfied with the combo. Plus, the app store for streaming my local sports and news and local channels makes it a far more appealing combo. If you stream x265 encodes you want the 4k but mine is on 13.4.5 unc0ver which was the last unwired resigning version and is hard to find now.

@mighty marten"Marketing Version" is the version that the Apple TV reports in its "About" screen. If you clicked again you would get the OS version. This naming scheme pre-dated the change over to "tvOS" which started with the Gen 4HD box and tvOS 9.

Marketing versions were how ATV software was labelled to differentiate it from the iOS platform it was based on. In fact, the original ATV gen 1 was based on the desktop macOS 10.4.7 Tiger software. All very confusing but they have since straightened it all out.

@abstract pondIf you are lucky enough to get one on 13.4.5 you can use Xcode and unc0ver to jailbreak it. Then install Reprovision (and Reprovision fix) to have it resign automatically in the background in case of power outages. This is what I use. Of course, you can always use checkra1n too, which can jailbreak all versions of tvOS 13 which unc0ver cannot.

Apple TV 2 can be jailbroken via Seas0nsPass.
Apple TV 3 can be jailbroken via etasonATV (only models A1469 3,2 with 8.4.3).

For Apple TV 4 and 4K - depending what tvOS the Apple TV device is on - you can use a variety of jailbreaks...

@torpid kernelI use to have my 4k on 12.4 with Chimera. It ran very smoothly. When the opportunity opened up though I jumped to unc0ver 13.4.5... equally good but tv0S 13 introduced Arcarde so keep that in mind if that is important for you because it's missing in 12. The 4k will require Xcode to jailbreak and you will need a Mac as well. I don't own the special cables needed for the 4k yet so can't comment on compatibility for 12.

@analog elk Is Reprovision + Reprovision fix working for you? Power went out this morning and unc0ver (13.4.5 on 4k) won't open to rejailbreak even though it was successfully signed previously by Reprovision. I recently had a similar problem with Reprovision Reborn (0.7 version) on iOS. I ended up using AltStore to get a signed version back on, because even my Xcode method to sideload is not working. My Apple IDs keep getting revoked. What's weird is both Nito and Josh repo's have been down too leading up to all this. Seems like Apple is working hard to kill our jailbreaks.

EDIT: Spoke too soon, after further investigation, it appears one of 3 boxes did allow me to open u0 and rejailbreak. I checked when I last installed it with Xcode, it was in May of this year, but I recently signed out of the app and resigned it using Reprovison with another Apple ID whereas with my other 2 I did not do that. Only thing I don't remember is if the change to the new Apple ID was within the last 7 days.

I should mention that I use Xcode 11.3.1 on Mojave to sideload my unc0ver when needed. But last couple of weeks it's not working and I get the same problem as described below. I wonder if Apple stopped signed builds from working with Mojave?

What's the error?
I've been having issues with signing from HS for months.
Altdeployer got me there in the end.

I had an issue with reprovision + fix after an appleID got security locked.
Since I restored the appleID it's working again, but only after I re-installed u0 from scratch: it was running the signing process without error before i re-installed but when the ATV lost power u0 couldn't be launched.

@frigid moat Since Reprovision failed at keeping me signed, I went back to Xcode as I always have before without any hiccup to resign and sideload over u0 again. Except now it would fail at the sideloading stage and I do not remember the exact error. I am not sure if it's a Mojave + Xcode 11.3.1 problem or not. The Apple Distribution cert I get in Xcode is similar to what I posted above.

Since posting that msg, I updated my keychain WWDR cert (expires in 2030 now) and I was able to get u0 over and rejailbreak (just tried one of 3 boxes so far). Not sure if the cert helped or not because I am still seeing the same issue in Xcode after I create the Distribution certificate. And I still have my doubt that Reprovision will keep me signed. Apple, as you know, is working hard to make it difficult for us jailbreakers lately.

Yeah I had a bunch of duplicate / expired certs in my keychain that josh helped me clear out. That let me use iOS app signer again, but it still wouldn't install u0 properly onto the atv

While I prefer the convenience of on-device signing especially given that I am using 4k boxes, the lack of reliability of Reprovision might make it worthwhile. It's been a good run but any day not having to use Xcode is a good one!

I think you may be able to switch without rootfs restore, never tried on tvOS though

but checkra1n also uses Substitute there so you don’t have to deal with installing Substrate

@frigid moat Good to know! For now I was able to get u0 sideloaded again with Xcode and now resigning with Reprovision. I will wait a couple of weeks and force reboot and see if the signing worked. If not, I may get those special cables since I have a 4k and switch to Checkra1n.

@nimble axleThe second (and third) gen are really too old. I owned both for a very long time and for the last couple of years jailbreaking them was not very useful or reliable. A cheap after market 4th gen will serve you better.

if you can use checkra1n (needs special cables for 4K), just run checkra1n -c --force-revert, connect the Apple TV and reboot it

checkra1n supports up to 14.7.1 on iOS, I think it should be the same for tvOS

for the 4K, you cannot restore it that way, you have to restore rootfs with checkra1n and then erase from settings

checkra1n works fine on tvOS 14.7 if you enable "Allow untested versions"

(there is no tvOS 14.7.1)

@zenith inlet13.4.5 is the last version with on device resigning so I am hanging onto mine for awhile longer until critical apps I use won't run. So far, only 1 local tv station app won't run on a rooted device but I can do without it. And even if I upgrade that app won't open. In fact, even if I reboot out of jailbreak mode the app still detects I'm rooted so there's nothing overly compelling to go up to tvOS 14.
