the only time you'd have to sideload anything is if you're sideloading the app that's used to install trollstore

tis because those media drives make an encrypted file that's downloaded. then once download is complete, it decrypts it and decompresses the encrypted container to its respected format. Issue with services like TrollStore, they download the encrypted container and try to unzip it on the get-go.. then when it can't find the files it needs, it errors

Install Kodi (20.4) on 1st gen ATV4K 16.5 (confirmed what worked for me using MacOS)

Download tvOS deb file at https://mirrors.kodi.tv/releases/darwin/tvos/
Extract deb using Unarchiver
Extract the file "data.tar.xz" with Unarchiver (other files created above are not needed)
Open the new folder: data > Applications
Right click Kodi folder > Show Package Contents
Open Frameworks > lib > python3.11
Delete the folder "config-3.11-darwin"
Create a new folder called "Payload" without the quotes and drag Kodi folder into it
Zip Payload folder and rename .zip to .ipa (eg. Kodi_ATV.ipa)
Upload Kodi_ATV.ipa file to the website: file.io and make note of the newly created URL link
Note: do not upload the .ipa to cloud services such as Google Drive and Dropbox, it will not work
Go over to the ATV > open TrollStore > click link icon on the right > input the URL > click install

If you have a Mac, this is how I got Trollstore installed on a 1st gen ATV4K. VMs work fine with pairing and sideloading, checkm8 does not (verified by @ionic copper)

Misaka/TrollStore for ATV

1. Make sure Macbook is paired to ATV with Apple Configurator (any version). If not, go into ATV Settings>Remotes and Devices>Remote App and Devices. Need to have the Remote App and Devices page visible in order to pair in Apple Conifigurator.
2. On ATV, download Apple Developer app. Open then quit it completely. Misaka (use version 5.3 or higher) will use this app later to install TrollStore.
3. Keep Apple Configurator open and launch Sideloadly. Load Misaka IPA and use an AppleID that has free signing slots then click Start. When done, quit all apps on Macbook.
4. On ATV open Misaka>Settings makes sure Landa is set by default (I am on tvOS 16.5). Back on main screen click "kopen". If it crashes, quit app from app switcher & run this step again.
5. Click Install TrollStore and on the popup screen click "Developer". If get an error, quit Misaka from app switcher, reboot ATV and try Step 4-5 again.
6. Open Developer app and click "Install TrollStore". ATV will automatically reboot. Open Developer app again, click "Register Persistence Helper".
7. Delete the sideloaded Misaka app. Open TrollStore, click link icon on the right and enter the URL of the Misaka app then install.
8. Open Misaka>Settings and click Block to block OTA updates. Reboot (not respring) and check if updates are now blocked.
9. Use TrollStore to install any other apps (use file.io website to upload .ipa files to share link to Trollstore because Google Drive & Dropbox do not work without modification)

Even on /var/mobile/Library/Preferences there is no kodi data…

Yes, Kodi is the main reason. I have emulators that i can connect my DualShock 4. I also have a nice Zelda Ocarina of Time theme as well.

If someone knows about the conversion, that would be perfect. These APK apps work wonderfully without the need to pay for Real Debrid or any premium subscriptions. Currently, Kodi addons don't offer any free links to use. A few years ago, Popcorn Time worked flawlessly with sideloading to tvOS.
