whats the new way of doing this?
are there any config.yaml examples of these so i can see how the syntax is made
so we just put a line like so
https://example.domain.com:8123
or is it external_url: https://example.domain.com:8123
do we need the 8123?
just read the page
or do it in the UI, as it shows
whatever you use to access your instance
im using the web browser gui file editor
im just not sure the formatting of the line
so some guidence if this is correct would be great
external_url: https://example.domain.com:8123
because its saying this is incorrect inside http
# Loads default set of integrations. Do not remove.
default_config:
http:
# For extra security set this to only accept connections on localhost if Caddy is on the same machine
# server_host: 127.0.0.1
# Update this line to be your domain
use_x_forwarded_for: true
external_url: https://ha.mydomain.stream:8123
you really aren't reading that page...
i went to settings--> system --> general my users is in advanced mode and i dont have the option for external url or internal
network related configuration is found under Settings > System > Network.
Hi,
Trying to update HA Core but everytime I run ha core update, system is crashing and not rebooting (have to disconnect PSU). Nothing relevant in logs.
Supervisor logs?
Hello
I moved to 2024.2.1
it says to upgrade python to 3.12
I installed the new python version
but site-package folder is empty
and homeassistant is not installed anymore, cause it's installed in python 3.11
how can I migrate site-package folder from python 3.11 to python 3.12 ?
You're running a pure Core install? Why?
If you must then use pyenv to manage your Python venvs
nothing relevant
Also check ha host logs and let the helpers be the judge of relevancy π
Could under-voltage detected be a problem performing updates?
It'll cause all sorts of problems
A common problem there is corrupt writes to the SD/SSD
Might try a new PSU to see if it's the cause
if you've got anything connected to the USB ports then an externally powered USB hub helps
Also check this if it's a pi: https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/rpi_power/
Already have it. Randomly happen
for some unknown reasons, my HA wont start up anymore, it shows: what could I messed up with my HA to get the console line: Waiting supervisor start -> System information -> Error from Supervisor: System not rdy with state_: setup
How can I get furhter informations
Hi,
I am new to the Home Assistant world and just bought myself a Raspberry Pi 4 (model b) with a 64 gb micro sd card. I asked this question yesterday on Home Assistant Discord server and no one were able to help. They did prompt me to buy a micro hdmi cable to get the log on screen and see what was going on. The problem:
I did install the Home Assistant OS 11.5 (RPI 4 / 400) according to the guide from Home Assistant webpage (https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/raspberrypi/). I did it by using the Raspberry Pi Imager v1.8.5.
The installation did work, and i got a message to unload the sd card.
When I enter the power button into the Raspberry Pi 4, (I also have entered the sd card to the slot underneath prior to connecting the powercord) it boots up (green light flickering beside the static red light in front). I have an ethernet cable connected to the RPI 4 and its connected to the router, same local network as my computer.
However, I am unable to connect through the browser by either homeassistant.local:8123 or homeassistant:8123. I dont see any RPI 4 / HA / Home Assistant either in my router, so I dont find any IP adress for it. I have also tried to use Fing without success.
I have tried to flash/re-install the HA on my Sd card multiple times withoiut luck. Do you guys have any suggestions on what might be the issue here?
I installed the HA on the SD card from a USB-C / SD card adapter since i dont have a sd card slot on my stationary computer. But I have also tried to install it from a laptop with internal card reader, with the same issue. Maybe there is a defect SD card even though it is brand new? If so, what should i buy? Is it still A2 versions? and is 64gb enough?
Also in the begining of the boot the hdmi screen shows βCard did not respond to voltage selecct! : -110β
I bought a PSU ( Raspberry Pi KSA-15E-051300HE) specificly with raspberry producer, so I should not have any issues with the power.
The following images below is what i could manage to take photos of while booting up.
https://ibb.co/5ry0zSC
https://ibb.co/CM2gyr3
https://ibb.co/3CJpfnj
https://ibb.co/7NqC6Yt
64GB is plenty, but I would try another SD card. Get several cards as they are cheap.
Ok, so based on the log information, you think that it might be a faulty sd card? I can go buy a new.
Should I aim for A1 or A2?
32/64 or 128?
Im only going to use Home Assistant on it, with some addons.
Thanks for taking the time to help me. Ill will buy a new card and try to install HA again. Cheers
Class 10 or higher
Wouldn't buying a external SSD be a better idea?
imo if you want a pc, buy a pc
I bought a new SD card, it seems to have solved the issue.
Hey can someone help me I canβt reach the home assistant website strangely automation still works but anything else not
I plug in a monitor and keyboard can i somehow get a backup ? Or something
I also get an error saying returned from supervisor system not ready with state :setup
that was fast
What can I do against the error return from supervisor system not ready with state :setup
Anyone?
Hey guys, what can I do if update installation takes forever? (Home Assistant OS on KVM).. Trying to update from 2024.1.6 to 2024.2.1..
did you got this after the recent update of Core?
yes :/ unfortently i dont have a backup
yeah i know
seems to be maybe an issue, even when Thinkerer said, this has no connection.
Im not a programmer, but since now a second known user has this, could this still an HA issue
dont know what to do Guess only a reinstall helps
to be true, re installing the backup and again backup solved the issue or not solved but it starts again
thats great but i dont have one to reinstall :/ did i just made a backup over the website or did u made some other?
π i dont want to do that but guess if have to luck for me that i only have one room .... only problem is that i have one automisation that i dont know how the recreat bec i made it with the help of chatgpt and the dc xD
would u recommend using the imager for that or is there a better way?
Depend on the system you use
pi4
In rpi I guess DD fits good. If you donβt mind the downtime
DD?
For a full backup
ah ok xD
Or what you mean with imager? Rpi image install?
I guess the official way is the best approach.
okay
Usually you do a backup, if you donβt uncheck it for each update
But I donβt know how to restore this backup, since I always use the Proxmox backup feature
mhh ok
teh docs?
where can i ask them
i think i cant reach the backup do to the error i get
Docs = documentation
oh ok xD
yeah ok guess there is not way HA does backups but stores them local and since i cant get there because of the error my only chance is to lose it all :/
You could try to mount the flash in a different system and search for the backups
yeah i put the SD in my computer already but i think i cant see everything als my pc tells me that only 32mb is used
You need something than can deal with EXT4 and the like.
and what would that be?
Google youros EXT4. You could also live boot ubuntu.
Paragon provides a commercial ext4 support. While Linux live cd is free
how do i live boot ubunto what even is that xD
so ok i got a linux reader i now how to only find where the backups might be
found something
.tar is the right format from the backups? @tiny heart
Yes
oh good yes thx tinkerer also for ur help the other day hope that works wish me luck xD
Hey, What's the package install command for the alpine that ha os x86 is based on
HAOS is not based on alpine. What are you trying to do?
I remember reading that somewhere, and the commands I found working at one time also seemed to match this. Thank you for prompting, will double check. I am tryna install vlc from the CLI
The SSH addons and most containers use alpine as base image but the OS itself is not based on it: https://developers.home-assistant.io/docs/operating-system/
You're right, sorry, I once had a containerised ha in a vm, is why I got my wireless crossed
I now have it running natively
Have tried apk, apt
Doesn't seem to recognise them
Where/how are you trying these commands?
lol during install, I type in my address, it comes up with the wrong street.. move the map over a bit over my building and the building beside shows a # on it, mine doesn't.. enter that buildings # and it works.. silly map
possible to setup vlans in the UI? saw it on the CLI, not seeing it on the UI (total HA n00b here; not n00b otherwise tho)
maybe not but was easy to setup on the cli; even auto-disabled the base eth; yay
hi! is there anyway to solve bus error when running hass on termux?
In the CLI, on the laptop with HA OS
Has anyone, installed Home Assistant on a MeLE Mini PC 3C?
Hi, I tried to install Home Assistant image directly to an SSD drive and I have a problem on the first boot.
"An error occured while installing Home Assistant, check the logs below for more information."
Hardware is Intel NUC. Should I just try to install the image again?
What do the logs show?
There is a multiple rows.. is the yellow ones the "problems"?
Probably, but sharing the logs will help us help you
Just copy the full logs here?
Please use a code share site to share code or logs, for example:
- https://dpaste.org/ (select YAML for the language, and consider picking a longer expiry)
- http://pastie.org/ (select YAML for the language)
- https://paste.debian.net/ (you guessed it, select YAML as the language)
Please don't use Pastebin, since it can randomly add spaces to the main view. Please also don't share text as images since it makes it harder for people to help you. Remember that others may have colour blindness, impaired vision, etc.
I read it "fast"... busted. Sorry.
http://pastie.org/p/4zDTgdLG3YYqheLDTzGUim
Did that link work?
It looks like that it wanted an ethernet cable connected before first boot? Interesting.. but now it is preparing π
(I flashed the drive again and that is the only thing I changed.. first time I wanted to see if it powers up at all before plugging the ethernet cable)
Well... it can't download anything without working internet
The image you flash is just the OS and enough to start downloading everything else
Aa.. Ok! Thanks. (I only started it without the cable to see if the scrap yard Intel NUC will even power on)
Well reflash was the solution for this (and plugging the ethernet cable).
Ive tried installing home assistant core several times and with two different OS images and i cannot get logged into home assistant. ive tried all the normal ip adresses and they all come up as page not found. im not really sure what to look into from here or how to get into home assistant from here
on a BigTreeTech Pi
i know its not ideal but Ive talked to a couple people who have done it
HAOS won't support it, so that leaves the cursed method or Container
How are you trying to install there?
ive been following a guide that someone that has been helping me gave me
one second lol im not using a link its more of a written guide from someone
Oh... gods... this doesn't bode well
@steel flower I converted your message into a file since it's above 15 lines :+1:
Well... that's ... not great
Friends don't suggest that install method
https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/linux#install-home-assistant-container is the way you should be going
Also, there's official docs for a Core install
okay ill have to look into this. Im sorry, Im very new to this lol
Not your fault your "friend" wasn't really a friend
I was asking about it in another forum and this person offered me help, said they had previously done it so they have been helping me with it
Core installs are for *nix greybeards who love compiling software from source
Sane people use Docker
okay ill look into this then lol Thank you. Im really just trying to get HA set up to monitor my printer π I ended up way over my head
HAOS is the easy button, but won't run on your Pi
Container (Docker) is the next easiest
Core is hard mode
yeah i certainly dont want hard mode lmao
So ill have to set up a VM and go from there, correct?
i guess my question is how do i install docker?
the link assumes i have it installed already
ok so I have to install debian 12.5 onto the pi first, and then I can install docker, and then I will be able to follow the install you initially linked?
Well, no
You have to install Docker
Follow the instructions for the current OS
You're using apt above, so it's some form o Debian or derivative ... hence the two links I gave you
Depends on whether that's 32bit or 64
well im currently running BTTs version of debian, CB-1 but it said here https://docs.docker.com/engine/install/debian/ that it needs to be debian 12.5 or 11. I assumed id have to change it to the official debian install
Nah, you just have to ensure that you're 64 bit to follow that
oh sweet thats awesome news lol its got a 64 bit ARM processor
Sure, but is the OS 64 bit π
yeah it looks to be 64 bit Debian 11 build
Then follow the Debian docs
great, thank you very much Ill give this a shot when i get home tonight. Ive been effing with this thing for over a month now lol
/PATH_TO_YOUR_CONFIG points at the folder where you want to store your configuration and run it. Make sure that you keep the :/config part.
is this path on the Pi or a folder on your pc?
Path on the computer running Home Assistant
If that's confusing then HAOS may be a better choice
isnt the Pi running home assistant?
The Pi is a computer you know π
I guess i was just confused by the wording lol idk this is a lot to try and take in, I appreciate your help and patience
is there a specific file path i should use for that config file? or just like D:/ Homeassistant/config
Well, there's no D: because that's Windows
I use /data/ for everything
Compose file in /data/docker/
HA in /data/homeassistant
Then you can back up /data/ and get it all
ok great so i can just sub in "/data/homeassistant:/config
Yup
awesome. thank you again i really appreciate all your help. Hopefully i can get this damn thing going lol. All this to save a stupid LED light thats supposed to communicate with my printer lmao
Think this is a stupid question but here goes, for those that has HA, as well as other docker containers installed in a mini pc, is the mini pc connected to a monitor/keyboard/mouse like a normal PC all the time or it's placed elsewhere (like beside a router/server room) after initial setup with just a power supply connected?
What happens if the mini pc loses power supply?
Can HA and all the other containers reboot automatically when the power is turned back on? Curious how other people set up their mini pc physically.
What happens if the mini pc loses power supply?
It stops working π
Can HA and all the other containers reboot automatically when the power is turned back on?
Assuming:
- the computer boots when power is returned
- Docker is configured to start on boot
- the container is set to start
Ah, and I assume most people will set it up that way? Else, if there is a power loss, I'll have to reconnect the mini pc to a monitor/keyboard/mouse and it's cumbersome if it's placed somewhere like in the middle of the house haha
You can relatively safely test this by properly powering the PC off, the removing power for 10s or so and see what happes if you plug it back in.
You might want to invest in a UPS if you expect this to happen more than once or twice per year.
1.) Check BIOS/UEFI for something named similar to AC Power recovery.
2.) Check systemctl is-enabled docker.service and run systemctl enable docker.service if not.
3.) Research docker restart policy.
Some BIOSes/UEFIs have an option to power on when power is returned. Better would be an UPS to prevent an ungraceful shutdown
I'll look into UPS, thanks
Hi,
Why do I still have an update available? π
https://i.imgur.com/HHVleAx.png
did ha restart when you updated?
yes it restarted roughly 5-10mins after I executed ha core update
restart su?
su ? supervisor ?
yeah
try again and check su logs as that is what handles the updates
processing, will see
restarting
well, no change
https://i.imgur.com/72YEceR.png
looks like it crashes when updating
and doing a rollback
https://i.imgur.com/4axBNgt.png
https://i.imgur.com/9rWm0HO.png
Not sure about the errors in /config/home-assistant-rollback.log, datetime doesn't match with crash mentionned in SU logs π€
im trying to install docker using this guide but im having an issue with the echo \ command. am i meant to send these all as separate commands?
echo
"deb [arch=$(dpkg --print-architecture) signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc] https://download.docker.com/linux/debian
$(. /etc/os-release && echo "Bullseye") stable" | \
You can simply use the convenience script: https://get.docker.com/
As for the question itself: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1199854/why-are-there-backslash-line-breaks-on-this-apt-install-command
Hi
I'm trying to build homeassistant in a virtual py environment using pip/pipx and cryptography/openssl failed to build. Is it due to out of memory problem while building openssl? i've one GB RAM rpi3.
ok. understood the problem. it's cryptography requirement. i'm on arch linux and it has python-cryptography 41.x. and latest HA needs cryptography-42.0.2
pip install homeassistant==2023.12.4 --break-system-packages
this might work for me.
Why is there so much hush to upgrade cryptography in HA? Not all system can build these packages from scratch since they require high CPU/RAM.
i use duckdns
How to add local to Home Assistant application.
i tried but when my phone connected to local. HASS can not load
I have set up a fixed ip for HASS
and can access with browser with http://iplocal:8123
On HASS application is can not access when set Internal URL
@rose quest you need ssl certificates then only it would work.
you can use letsencrypt and integrate with HA
it's free and only downside is that you need to renew your certs every 3 months, which is alright.
i believe it's a problem with numpy too.. if i remember correctly. Why HA requirements is so strict about numpy==1.26.0 :/
Because older versions don't have required features and/or bugs
Why not just use Docker though?
No need to build stuff, just pull an image and go
Docker won't suffice my requirements. I've my own written iot-stack (dbus/cpp) which interacts closely with HA :/
thanks. I will take a look at it.
@humble mirage is it possible to override requirements of a particular version of HA without downloading the source code?
pip install homeassistant==XXXX numpy==1.26.3-1
so that it picks system python package python-numpy==1.26.3.1?
No
@fallow hollow I converted your message into a file since it's above 15 lines :+1:
:/
HA needs to be a bit relaxed about these two packages. One is cryptography and other one is numpy
No, no it doesn't
Versions are required so that HA runs, and that's that
Your choices are to use Docker and the API (as you should have been doing) or to move to proper hardware
thanks
I will try
If you want SSL when remote and not when local then a proxy like NPM is the way
i using duckdns is ok now
but can not set Internal URL with HASS Application
Right... because you need to use https: all the time
That's because you added ssl_ to HA
so how to add Internal URL on Home Assistant on my phone?
i tried install letsencrypt
but it can not start
@rose quest When using Discord's Reply feature it defaults to pinging the person you reply to, which can get frustrating for the target. Use Shift + click on the Reply option, or click @ ON to @ OFF to stop this - on the right side of the compose bar.
You have to change this every time (thank the Discord devs for that).
Well, you can't
Or... you can, but https:// only works with the name in the cert
many thank
Is the OPNsense device presence broken? Also how would I check that
First time diving into config editing
Check for known issues?
im trying to install HACS but apparently ive changed the username and dont have the correct one. Is there a way to find that?
That's a path.
specifically for cd /home/{username}/docker/home-assistant
yeah but i need the username to run the command
That's your path
You would have created it
It's your device that you logged into somehow
How can you not know your username?
maybe thats not my error then. its saying the file path does not exist i just wondered if the username had changed somehow
using the LS command i dont have a folder labeled " home assistant" I have
home-assistant.log home-assistant_v2.db-shm secrets.yaml
blueprints home-assistant.log.1 home-assistant_v2.db-wal tts
configuration.yaml home-assistant.log.fault scenes.yaml
deps home-assistant_v2.db scripts.yaml
would i want to change the command to /home-assistant_v2
That folder with configuration.yaml is your config golder
Also, did you actually use Docker?
yes i installed it with the instructions you gave me
Then you should know where you mapped the config folder to
it's in your compose file
yeah i mapped it to data/homeassistant
Then ... why the fuck were you looking for /home/{username}/docker/...?
I was just following the instuctions here https://pimylifeup.com/install-hacs-home-assistant/
FFS
Following random guides requires you to fill in the gaps between your system and what they did
You should have just followed the HACS docs
Indeed, if you have a choice between the official docs and some rando's guide... don't pick the rando
alright i followed the HACS guides instead. Ijust followed it from a link for installing the bambu labs integration
i now have HACS in my HA page but when i click it i dont see any options such as integrations or front end
Have you followed this? https://hacs.xyz/docs/configuration/basic
yes
You are seeing a search bar instead of menus for integrations, frontend and so on?
Please use imgur or other image sharing web sites, and share the link here.
Image posting is blocked in most channels to discourage people from sharing text as images. Sharing text as images assumes that everybody sees the world as you do, which isn't the case. Some people are colour blind, or have visual impairment that means they can't make sense of an image of text.
yes exactly
You have enabled the experimental features during the install. That's nothing bad, just different and the near future of HACS
okay yeah i definitely clicked that lol
is there a different way to get to the integrations menu?
There is no integrations menu anymore. You can find everything in this list/searchbar
Another benefit are the dedicated update entities for HACS integrations, cards and so on. So you get the same notification as for other HA updates.
And you get access to the templates
okay cool i found out how to add the custom repositories i was after lol thanks
Welcome to the future π
Hi, my Home Assistant core 2024.1.6 wonβt update to 2024.2.1
Tried it many times already.
Any suggestions?
Move to Python3.12?
Same problem for several days now
Looks like itβs a known issue : https://github.com/home-assistant/core/issues/110172
trying to install supervised and got this error:
ping: checkonline.home-assistant.io: Temporary failure in name resolution

any ideas about what's going on? used this installer https://github.com/home-assistant/supervised-installer/releases/tag/1.7.0
URL not opening on other devices (https://checkonline.home-assistant.io)
What does nslookup checkonline.home-assistant.io say?

This is why my HASS restarted automatically.
What install method are you using?
Haos or are you using supervised on another OS?
i installed on Intel NUC with Method 2: Installing HAOS directly from a boot medium.
Before is good.

unauthorized access from some account?
are you exposing it out wan?
How to solve this problem
yes
I imagine I am doing something stupid, or missing something obvious, or both. I'm trying to install home assistant OS on aΒ proxmox VM and I can't find the correct ISO file for the generic x86 installation. Does it exist?
if it isnt a hardware issue like overheating then i would restore from a known good backup
https://tteck.github.io/Proxmox/ this is the easiest way
alternative shows proxmox if you want to do it manually
So I should SSH into the proxmox server and just run that shell script? Does it create the VM for me? Obvious newbie here β¦
yep
tteck scripts are trusted by the community and basically walk you through a vm or lxc setup
Just did it. It worked! Donated to him. Thank you!
nice
yeah man play around with his scripts he has ones to do some good stuff for proxmox like run updates, unlock everything for free repo, etc
he is also somewhat active here @ tteckster (i wont ping him for no reason)
he also has lxcs for different stuff like pihole/adguard if you want to spin something up real fast and just play with it
Hi, i don't know why but my HA won't update. It's been stuck on HA 2022 version for a while and whenever i update it just spins forever. Also whenever i try to make a backup it says it can't because HA is starting up, it says this after it has been running for hours and is fully started
Hey, im new to home assistant. I have the following problem:
when i run ha network info (in advanced shell with protetion mode off) my wlan0 interface is missing, only eth0 is shown.
when running nmcli dev status i see wlan0 is not managed by NetworkManager. So i run nmcli dev set wlan0 managed yes, and it is now managed by NetworkManager. I can then scan for networks with nmcli dev wifi list.
However, wlan0 is still not available in ha network info, and is once again unmanaged after a reboot (I run home assistant on a RPi 4).
Anyone knows any help? TIA
Hey, I'm stuck at waiting for cli and waiting for supervisor to startup
Hello, I have a Synology ds216j and I would like to install home assistant on it. Unfortunately, I dont think it supports Docker. Is there any solutions ?
Does it support VMs?
From what i've seen I don't think so...
You could run an outdated package like this: https://synocommunity.com/package/homeassistant
Or attempt to run core on your own with the outdated python package. Both are poor options in my opinion.
I'd recommend buying a (U)SFF or Mini PC to run your services and let the NAS be a NAS.
Hello my friends!
I am at my end wits: I want to install Home Assistant on my Raspberry Pi 3 with Raspberri Imager. I flashed the image with the Imager without any problems. I plugged my Raspberry Pi to my router and USB Power Source. When opening http://homeassistant.local:8123/ "Preparing Home Assistant" opens. But the preparation seems to be stuck. In the Details, no error message can be found but this one:
"[supervisor.host.sound] Can't update PulseAudio data: Failed to connect to pulseaudio server"
And the Preparation is stuck at this:
"[supervisor.docker.interface] Downloading docker image ghcr.io/home-assistant/aarch64-hassio-supervisor with tag 2024.01.1."
The starenge thing is, that I installed Home Assistant on this Raspberry Pi with the same SD Card 2 years ago without any problems. But today it does not work.
Has anybody an idea for solving this problem?
How long has this been running for?
About 30 minutes
That's what I was thinking, i'll just buy a raspberry and install HA on it, thanks for your advice
a raspberry
[:(](#general-archived message)
Is it not good enough ?
They're the worst option
If you already have one, then sure, but use an SSD (on a powered USB hub)
Need to buy something... then a second hand SFF PC wins hands down
#hardware-archived has a long history of recommendations and they can help steer you
Alright i'll make sure to check it out, thanks
Has nobody any clue whats the cause of my problems?
Nobody who's online right now, no
I really dont like to use philips hue, but if I cannot solve this I do not have an alternative.
Somebody will be along who can help
Is anyone having issues updating to 2024.2.2? I've had it applying the update for the last 20 min and it's still not finished.
Nothing of concern in the logs
Which logs did you check?
Both general CORE and Supervisor
Installed in the VM (QEMU)
24-02-16 20:54:39 INFO (MainThread) [supervisor.homeassistant.core] Updating Home Assistant to version 2024.2.2
24-02-16 21:03:09 INFO (MainThread) [supervisor.homeassistant.api] Updated Home Assistant API token
It's 21:17:00...
Leave it be, reboot HA, reboot VM?
I think it just got uncloged, since it went dark. Let's see if it reboots...
Rebooting the VM likely can't hurt but I'm not convinded it will fix the issue.
I'd try running ha host logs --identifier hassio_supervisor --follow and then triggering an update again.
If there's still nothing i'd check the host logs too.
Will take note of it for another time - it's booting up.
Should have been more patient, but 30+ min minor version update is pretty strange.
Would you agree?
When I do core updates in my test (I mention this because my database and entity list is tiny) HAOS VM it takes 1-3 minutes or so. I didn't time it but it's certainly not 30 minutes.
My experience as well, which is why after 20+ min I got spooked...
I have a massive (4GB database) but it's still only 1-3 min updates usually...
hi everybody
is there anyone with same issue?
Assap I install core 2024.2.1 my RPI4 turns into unstable wifi connection
I have attempted the install a number of times and it eventually just crashes out and restarts, failing to install
Finally got it installed. I think there was an issue with an integration.
Hi all. I have HA running in a docker container (running on qnap) and am passing through /dev/ttyUSB0 to give it a usb zigbee radio. Can I pass a zwave radio through in the same fashion, or do I need to be running a second container specifically for zwave?
no you can pass through multiple devices to a single container
however you shouldnt use the port alias but the serial identifier of the device
When I try to setup the zwave integration, it's asking for a url (ws://localhost:3000) ; the container isn't running anything on this port atm
both
zwave needs a zwave container for the integration to point to
the integration does nothing until you have a zwave container setup (such as zwave-js-ui)
also do what he said and change to the serial/by-id not ttyUSB0 or w/e
gotcha. I'm running a second container for mosquitto mqtt, maybe I can combine it with that one
no this will be yet another container
yeah qnap makes it tricky.. the usb devices don't show up in /dev/usb-serial or w/e the path
https://github.com/zwave-js/zwave-js-ui this is the recommended container for #zwave-archived and please move there for specific questions related to it, including the container. there is also the discord server https://discord.gg/4bNtf5bBXJ
thats surprisingly few members
it's new-ish
it's ran by al calzone (zwave js maintainer and nabu casa employee) and roberts lando (the zwave-js-ui maintainer)
the point is ttyuSB0/1/2 that last number can change and break your setup (usually after power loss). i'm sure there's a way with qnap to point directly to it somehow
can someone help i get an shared HA api error 6 in my app i use iOS
say the mobile_app was not able to load add them to HA but when i want to add it to HA its says i have to open the app xD
yeah I get that, the ttyUSB0 wasn't gonna be permanent. thanks gents
/dev/serial/by-id/usb-ITead_Sonoff_Zigbee_3.0_USB_Dongle_Plus_4691813b0b86ec11a556571719c2d21c-if00-port0 something like this
[~] # ls /dev/se*
/dev/sequencer /dev/sequencer2 π€
it costs you $0 not to say that
annoying little things like that I've run into on qnap, oh well
lol
strange
join the cool kids on team mini pc and get your smart home off your nas hardware :p
all we want is nas hardware that can do stuff :C
yeah mini pc to host it is the future state I'll get to one day.. recommend any hardware? have looked at pi's now and again, saw the HA green too or w/e it's called
currently n100 based systems are π₯
but realistically anything that isnt a raspberry pi or similar will do aswell
yeah n100 based mini pcs like the beelink line are the current best buy but a lot of people also go for the older (sometimes dirt cheap) intel 7th/8th gen mini pcs like the lenovo m910q
basically if you have $50-100 you probably buy the older one, and if you have more you buy the newer one for futureproofing and some good improvements like igpu and power usage reduction
update: I left it for hours and now it works!
Hi All! Anyone online that wouldn't mind helping me properly complete installation of the HA green? please!!!
Inital setup threw an error. googled it and did a couple things:
- changed my router DNS to google
- flashed an SD card with the green installer image and went through the official resetting instructions.
No dice
plugged in an HDMI and this is what I'm getting:
Hi, as my old NAS is always on and sits idle, can i install via ssh HA on it and would it go on any NAS? Or is any type/brand advised?
Hi all. Today i discovered that my homeasstant running stable for a year became suddenly unavailable. Its still connected to the network, i can ping it and zigbee devices with conbee still work. Yet im not abla to load lovelace ui from the network. It constantly returns a connection refused error. I have backups stored remote but samba is not running yet. Any ideas?
I'm planning on switching from HAOS to home assistant container, and also planning on using debian as the OS for my server. I'm hoping to run a few other services on the server too, does anyone have any wisdom regarding whether I'll be fine just using the ssh server debian installation or if I should go with a proper desktop instead?
If you are fine with command line. Doesnβt matter.
I tried the container with Debian ssh before. But now I switched to haos since the container does not have HACS
That is not correct. HACS is available for all installation methods.
All right. I might get it confused with something else
With addons, probably
For sure back then there was a limitation for container.
Yeah maybe. I do think there too many terms when it comes to HA π
Tbh I donβt even know the difference between add ons and integrations.
#integrations-archived integrate Home Assistant with devices or services, or provide functionality within Home Assistant.
#add-ons-archived provide additional software or services, which an integration could possibility integrate with. Add-ons are for Home Assistant OS and Supervised only, other install methods can install software other ways.
There's a handy glossary: https://www.home-assistant.io/docs/glossary/
So an add-on is an 3rd party integration?
Bring additional to what?
For example a reverse proxy additional to HA
Or a MQTT broker
To connect such software with HA, an integration is used
So addons are more like gadgets? Not directly related to integrating devices to HA?
Helping and/or supporting independent software
Now you've introduced yet another term
I see. Might be a good idea if itβs named as extensions or plugins. Like for a browser. Then i think I can understand better
Because when you say add on people have to think itβs added to what
i think of them as 'services', since rather than extending home assistant configuration they actually run as a separate services
and i agree add-ons isn't a very helpful name
also: dumb question and probably not very home assistant related: if i install ssh server debian, will i still be able to access the shell prompt through keyboard + mouse + monitor on the server? mainly just worried in case i somehow lose ability to connect via ssh for whatever reason
If you are using a usual Debian the CLI via keyboard and monitor is still available, even with SSH configured. That's independent.
hey can anyone help me with this one ? https://community.home-assistant.io/t/network-installation-problem/691387
I'm finding it very difficult to determine how to boot the HAOS installer from a USB stick such that it installs onto the internal drive of the machine. When I flash the HAOS image to a USB stick and boot it, I end up with HAOS running off of the USB and with the HAOS shell being substantially limited in functionality, I do not know how to run fdisk and dd to replicate the USB contents to the main internal drive.
There is no installer. Flashing is installing it. Limited how? If you mean the ha prompt you can enter login to get to a shell but HAOS is not a general purpose OS.
The installation instructions explain how to flash HAOS onto the target device.
When flashing the target disk requires booting via USB to a separate OS first, there aren't any instructions for that. For example, Debian has an installer that boots via USB stick and then lets you flash the internal drive. It would be nice if there was a simple set of instructions to perform the same thing for HAOS. What I am having to do is to boot via Debian Live and manually flash the main disk myself and then I need to make sure I have the MBR set correctly and stuff -- just inherently risky considering I'm also wiping out the OS currently installed on the internal disk
I've tried virtualization and it was problematic for me
How?
You're saying install something like Ubuntu and then install Docker and run HA like that?
I've installed and run HA about 4-5x using that method and it always seems to get out of sync and become problematic for me
I don't remember specifically why -- I just know the raw HAOS is better
No. If you want to virtualize you can install proxmox VE and create a HAOS VM.
That sounds like too much work π
and then I would discover that there are issues accessing the GPU or something
Then follow the official docs which I linked.
I'm doing that now. thank you
i think you are talking about supervised on debian which isnt recommended here (and he isnt suggesting that)
https://www.derekseaman.com/2023/10/home-assistant-proxmox-ve-8-0-quick-start-guide-2.html he is suggesting something like this- very easy to setup
but bare metal haos is fine if you know what you want
Trying to add the camera KC420WS tp link, to home assistant and haveing some issues.
Hey does a HA restore just do HA stuff, or add ons too like NGINX manger that I installed via HA? (RaspPi install)
If you restore a complete backup, it's everything
Excellent, thanks
It will show you when you try to restore it
oh? all i saw was option for quick or complete restore? does the trick tho
As I recall, it shows you what's in it and lets you restore what you want. I don't run HAOS anymore, though
That's where a HAOS VM comes in handy.
why are addons only available with supervised?
(And HAOS) Because they are Containers with additional information for the Supervisor how to run and how interact with HA (eg ingress)
but why cant the docker socket be exposed into the core container?
that would allow core to boot up additional containers
Because the Supervisor manages all necessary containers in HAOS and messing with containers might break the system. If you want additonal containers, run the container install and manage them yourself. In that case the add-ons' software have to be setup by hand as well.
is there any guide on how to integrate these additonal containers by hand?
because i would very much do that by hand instead of using supervised
The documentation of each software
I have what I am sure is dumb question... π I have an existing homekit setup with some accessories installed, alexa, google, appletv and half a dozen or so matter light bulbs already in homekit.
hoas found a few things and I previously had played around a bit and broke it by adding a bunch of addons and integrations...so I nuked it and started over and I am going to take a more systematic approach to add things...
my question is I have 6 or so mater light bulbs that are already working in homekit, and I couldn't figure out how to get them into homekit even after adding the matter plugin? So is their a secret or what. I don't really feel like resetting all the lightbulbs and such...
jump to #matter-archived for matter questions. most of us just dont buy anything matter/thread at this time
Hello! Can anyone guide me towards a very explicit guide on how to install Z2M under Proxmox? I managed to install Proxmox and HA under it but I canβt get for the life of me to install Z2M (added Mosquito as add-on in HA)
https://tteck.github.io/Proxmox/ is one way
Personally... Debian VM and then Docker for everything
Tried to follow it. Installs it but fails to start every single time
Can't help with that since I've never used the scripts
You could use the Discussion boards there to get help with them
Tks, Iβll go that route
in respect to HA OS, do i need to disable a firewall rule or possibly modify the binding listening port for the web interface? I can ping the ip of the instance of HA OS but i have no SSH or Web interface access. This is running on a windows 11 machine behind wmware workstation pro 17, i followed the tutorial on the HA webstite.
Hi! I'm running into a really strange issue, I just finished my installation like 10 hours ago, I configured most of it but now it seems that my password or my username aren't accessible anymore, like they got changed, is it possible? thx
SSH isn't available by default, so no
Do you know anyway to find the username / password?
Google home assistant locked out
You are using wired networking and selected bridged for the VM?
the interface in the HOST machine is using a wireless interface, if that is what you are asking. The HAOS vm is bridged and is getting a ip from the same subnet as that of the pc i am trying to access the web UI. ie....HAOS 172.31.255.80 ....PC 172.31.255.81. I have varified from the console that the HAOS vm instance can indeed ping out to the internet.
me? I only use two tp link tapo plugs
finally it is just a poor configuration from I
Hello! I don't think this is the right channel, but I just go into the idea of turning my home into a smart home. Is there some type of way I can let my google home assistant turn on my pc and screens with a voice command? For example with plugging something into the power outlet?
Sure but there's multiple ways. I'd recommend looking into WoL (Wake on Lan).
Thank you :D
can i have some help with installing over proxmox? I set up a vm with 10 gbs ram, 30 gbs storage, and have a backup on hand from a old install. I am trying to run hass os but after install i get hit with a blank page error.
nevermind, now hassOS is refusing the connection
Use the VNC console and check ha supervisor logs.
Home Assistant has crashed
Can't start Home Assistant
last thing before the error is "wait until home assistant is ready"
if you need i can enter a vc and share screen
as of right now i am pulling the ghcr.io docker and trying to reinstall hass

Hello. First time user here. I have a Rpi 3 and downloaded and installed the image. I can reach the HA web page, but I get a bunch of errors that seem to indicate I cant download from github. Restarting the system just brings that page back up. Can I restart the process or do I need to reflash the card?
24-02-19 18:56:47 ERROR (MainThread) [supervisor.docker.interface] Can't install ghcr.io/home-assistant/aarch64-hassio-supervisor:2024.01.1: 404 Client Error for http+docker://localhost/v1.43/images/ghcr.io/home-assistant/aarch64-hassio-supervisor:2024.01.1/json: Not Found ("No such image: ghcr.io/home-assistant/aarch64-hassio-supervisor:2024.01.1")
as an example
You could try rebooting it or running ha supervisor repair via keyboard and monitor. Sometimes it also fixes itself after some time.
This error is often caused by DNS issues. You can check by running ha supervisor logs and ha host logs.
Hello, certainly a stupid question, but since I've a RPI5 now, can I just take my RPI4 SD card and put it in the 5 or do I need a fresh installation and then backup/restore my RPI4 config ?
The RPi5 needs another HAOS image. So the backup and restore would be needed
You need a fresh install any time you change the hardware
OK, thank you very much guys π
Lost my homeassistant and don't know how. It was working yesterday morning. yesterday night it was not. I run it on a raspberry pi with 64GB SD card. Not a complicated setup. Its been working well in this fashion for at least a year (i added a deconz stick about six months ago, last zigbee device I added was at least a month ago.) Anyway, When i have the SD card with HA on it, it does nothing. Doesn't seem to boot, doesn't show on the network, the red light is on, the network lights are on. I put a different card in with Rasperry OS on it and it works fine. Its on the network, I can ssh to it and it displays a desktop via HDMI. I flashed a new card with HA on it and it does nothing. I've plugged an HDMI cable into it and there is nothing on the "screen." I have the CanaKit (https://www.canakit.com/raspberry-pi-4-starter-max-kit.html) . Any suggestions would be great. Thank You
You plug the monitor in before you apply power?
I did
Then it's either a problem with power (HAOS seems to be power hungry) or the SD card is dead, or the flash isn't working
Try unplugging all USB devices
done, everything is unplugged...just network cable
5.1v 3.5A from canakit?
yup
make sure it's still outputting that amount
there's not much it can be at this point, power supply or sd card
I updated 2-3 days ago to the latest, since then every morning HA tells me it cant connect and retrying. this has happened every morning since the update./ but did not happen prior.. any things to check?
I run HA in a UTM VM on a macmini
i updated the VM & the MAC & rebooted
the issue goes away for about a day if I reboot the vm, but hadnt had to do this prior
Sounds like a network issue brought by HAOS to me
The HAOS very cleverly wait for network connection while booting. Meaning if thereβs a miaconfigutation for the network it will not boot π
my only rebut is that I've done a fresh install. Should be the default config.
he brings up a validpoint, does your router see HA when you use a fresh card?
yeah but that will probably give it a different hostname and mac address
not sure how that all works tbh
Could you restart your router and try again?
seems the mac address is the same. router shows it as homeassistant
i'll try that now...though the wife will be pissed interrupting her netflix π
don't think I have any
I am seeing "did not receive auth message" errors in my log
and the 1st error wwas "the system could not validate that Sqllite3 database xx.... .was shutdown cleanly"
hmmm seems my VM isnt pulling an IP now...time to figure out what this MAC update did & why it wont connect the network after working for months
ugh , I reboot the MAc & all is well
no joy
I am having issues with my port forwarding on my router to my home assistant install, which is a UTM vm on a m2 mac mini. My network setup is a little weird, so I have to forward ports on my modem and my router basically, but everything should be set up to forward 8123 and 443 on both routers. canyouseeme.org is saying that the two ports are both not open and giving a connection refused error. I run a minecraft server also, and the port forwards are identical but that one works, so I am just confused and probably did something wrong
I can send screenshots of my network settings also
What's the first two sets of numbers for your modem's WAN IP, as shown in the modem's pages
what, like 192.168?
or like public ip
for my network setup, we have a modem/router combo from centurylink, and we have deco routers acting as access points for the network, so technically the router is still on, its just got wifi disabled
I found the WAN mac address but I dont see an ip
I know the router access ip is 192.168.0.1
and the deco routers is 192.168.68.1
The WAN IP matters as your ISP may be doing CGNAT or other silly things
That's why you can't just Google it and tell us what Google/some other site says
yeah no centurylink is not doing cgnat
and other port forwards work with other services, just not the ones for HA
Then it's time to check what's different about the HA port forward
sorry this centurylink router is ass
hard to find anything
the port forwards are literally identical with the 25565 one and the 8123 one on both routers, and theyre to the same computer so it makes even less sense
would I have to do something on the computer side? I didn't think I had the mac firewall settings on or anything
Connect to the "outer" router and check to see if you can connect to HA using the WAN IP (and port 8123) of the "inner" router
its just saying that it can not access the server or that it is an invalid ip address depending on if I do http or https
Then your problem is (at least in part) with that "inner" port forward
the video I am following for like duckdns and stuff mentioned forwarding 443 to 8123 or something, but that just isnt an option for the "inner" router
could that be something to do with it?
also if I do the "outer" routers internal ip created by the "inner" one, it sits there and loads for a while and gives a "not responding" error, which is the same thing that homeassistant.local and my duckdns does, so that seems like a good sign
When connected to the outer router none of the IPs or hostnames for the "inner" network will work
ah ok
That's why I wrote exactly what I did:
Connect to the "outer" router and check to see if you can connect to HA using the WAN IP (and port 8123) of the "inner" router
Hopefully there's a really good reason why you've got this painful setup
the centurylink router is awful lol
and its a goofy 2 dsl line or something so we cant get rid of it, so we had to get past it
its a massive pain for stuff like this though
is there a way I can disable the dns stuff from the HA vm terminal so I can access it again?
like a command or smthn
"dns stuff"?
I meant duckdns and the ssl config I did before restarting it
that one doesn't work still, it says its not responding. I had these issues in the past trying to set up HA and I know I fixed em somehow but I forget how
Well, if both http:// and https:// to the LAN IP aren't working then HA isn't running
Hey guys. I'm trying to update Home Assistant Core, but it seems to just be stuck on the loading icon for hours. Is it stuck? Going from 2023.1.4 to 2024.2.2
What's your install method - HAOS?
Yup! Sorry for the late response
https://imgur.com/a/VQywGn1 Been stuck this way for hours
Check the supervisor logs: https://my.home-assistant.io/redirect/logs/?
I'm trying to change my installation to a new computer with a larger drive.
I am running HAOS
I'm following the guide under on boarding.
When it asks if I want to restore, I point it to the backup file on my other computer, but the "Restore a Backup" window comes up but nothing happens. It has been over an hour now. I dont know if it is not downloading the file or what. How can I procede?
When you say on my other computer ... what do you mean?
A computer on my network. It finds it fine but it doesn't seem to be downloading the file
Didn't know they added the ability to do that
The docs say you have to upload the backup
Thats what Im trying to do. I click on upload the backup, the file explorer comes up, I choose the file, and then the Restore a Backup windows comes up with the "working" line crossing. Been like that for over an our. It also says to refresh periodically but all that does is take me back to the start.
How big is the backup?
15 megs
15,671,650
If I were to complete the initial setup and then do a restore, will it work properly with the new hardware?
I see no new errors since I attempted to start the update. I'm scared to do anything in the realm of restarting the instance as I don't want to break it if it is doing something. How long does an update like this normally take?
That's the recommended way if you're having issues uploading, so yes
I'll try it
Is anyone running home assistant behind an apache proxy in a docker container? I am having issues logging into home assistant. I keep getting a 400 bad request in the logs. I suspect after reading that it is a websocket issue with the login process.
I followed the steps someone layed out in this issue: https://github.com/home-assistant/core/issues/24750 but to no success. Has anyone successful set up HA with a similar setup?
Have you configured HA to accept requests from a reverse proxy?
In the configuration.yaml file. Is there another place?
Correct. The http section. You need to enable x_forwarded_for and add the IP/range of the trusted proxy/proxies
http:
use_x_forwarded_for: true
trusted_proxies:
- 10.0.0.200 # Add the IP address of the proxy server
- 172.30.33.0/24 # You may also provide the subnet mask
That is what I have, I needed that to get to the login screen of HA. But trying to login still doesn't work with that
Is the user trying to login allowed to do it from an external network and not limited to the local network?
My user is allowed to login from any network
Those aren't supervisor logs. Check on the top right and select supervisor.
Is the reverse proxy configured to support websocket?
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP:Upgrade} =websocket
RewriteRule /(.) ws://ha.ip.address:8123/$1 [P,L]
RewriteCond %{HTTP:Upgrade} !=websocket
RewriteRule /(.) http://ha.ip.address:8123/$1 [P,L]
Header add Connection "Upgrade"
RequestHeader set Connection "Upgrade"
That is what I have
That worked! Thank you for the help
Iβm just getting started with HAOS & an Intel Nuc. I made the mistake of using etcher to flash the image onto a USB thinking it would be an installer like Ubuntu Live. Is the βGeneric x86-64β release image trying to keep things βvery genericβ for a reason or is there an easier path to getting this installed on the drive in the Nuc?
It initially booted to the HAOS CLI running off the USB which at least shows it was working. Then I tried booting from an Ubuntu Live USB and βrestoringβ the drive in the Intel Nuc with the HAOS image. This βworksβ but seems to put me face to face with something called GRUB.
From what I gather GRUB is a secondary bootloader which obviously needs to be configured but it is pretty intimidating (maybe for good reason to keep free from poking fingers)
Can you share a picture?
Unfortunately I donβt seem to be able to share a picture on discord (icon greyed out). I just re-booted and UEFI boot drive order is now missing that disk (only UEFI:LAN shows).
Will try to get back on Ubuntu Live and see if I can reformat that drive
btw if you find it easier, you can take the ssd/nvme out and flash it with etcher in another pc or in a case connected via usb or something
I saw someone had done that. I need to get an enclosure or usb for the m.2 ssd drive seems very convenient for this exact scenario.
a lot of folks make a super fast thumb drive with an m.2 nvme and a heatsink usb enclosure
you can also install proxmox on the bare metal and virtualize HaOS. a lot of folks prefer doing this on their NUCs
https://www.derekseaman.com/2023/10/home-assistant-proxmox-ve-8-0-quick-start-guide-2.html here's a guide doing that
Ok thanks I will look at that again. I had started that path but it seemed there is a license required.
there is not
Ok thatβs good news. I think it mentioned a license needed for 3 or more βnodesβ but maybe that was someone using it in 3 of their homes (like a smart home landlord or something)
Hello, I successfully installed HAOS-11.5 on a KVM, however today I can't load HA on the browser at http://homeassistant.local:8123/ I checked the VMM-4.0.0 hypervisor and HAOS-11.5 is Shutoff. I Start HAOS-11.5 and receive error: Cannot access storage file '/home/linuxmint/Downloads/haos_ova-11.5.qcow2' (as uid:64055,gid:109): No such file or directory. Maybe I accidentally deleted a file in ~/Downloads? Is there a way to install HAOS-11.5 on the hypervisor so the file is not sitting in ~/Downloads but somewhere safer?
those nodes would all live at the same place (your home) and would failover but super overkill for home assistant or anything home use. people do that to learn at home for homelab stuff tho
Got it. Seems worthwhile if I get that far, and good to know Iβm not locking myself into needing a license just yet.
proxmox is free for people. it's enterprise licenses are for companies
you can donate to them if you want tho lol
there's non-free repos that you can still enable and they go over it in the link above
Wow, I just found the hosts /var/lib/libvirt/images is missing the haos-11.5.qcow2 file is not there. Somehow I guess it disappeared? Guess I'll reinstall haos.
Hi,
I just updated my HAOS installation. But I'm running to the problem that after reboot and login the browser jumps to homeassistant.local:8123/lovelace and the page says "Loading data" with a nice cricle spinning around. Is there any tipp that prevents me to restore my backup and go back to the version 2023.07.02?? π’
clear your browser cache
already did that... no change... π’
Then review the HA logs via SSH. It could just take time to update
I found something....
2024-02-20 02:22:25.344 ERROR (MainThread) [homeassistant.helpers.service] Failed to load integration: homematicip_local
homeassistant.loader.IntegrationNotFound: Integration 'homematicip_local' not found.
For your understanding: I have 2 HAOS servers running that are connected via the HACS integration Remote Home Assistant. On the client HAOS there is the integration homematicip_local running (and working fine). The main HAOS server (where I did the update) is getting this error.
I explain this due to the fact that on the main server I see all the updates including theses pending on the client server.
And according to Murphy's law, I did click on the update to be installed on the main server.
My question is: How can I remove this integration on the main server? I found nothing in the config files.
I am stuck on black screen and a blinking cursor after installing HAOS on my hp t510 ssd (both ubuntu and etcher methods).
please help
Does it support and is configured for UEFI booting?
yes. i can boot any os on the t510 but cant boot up HAOS
Most OSs don't absolutely require UEFI though.
Hello, i'm using home assistant installed on vmware workstation pro on windows10. my machine has 5gb of ram assigned, but i noticed that after a few days, the vm starts using a lot more ram than it should, and it evenually crash. the pc has 12gb of ram, and i dont have anything else in background except ha. how can i fix this issue?
What custom integrations are you using, and what add-ons?
Hello, I've discovered a curious install issue where haos_ova-11.5.qcow2 installs home assistant on my hypervisor VMM 4.0.0 in ~/Downloads, rather than the KVM default /var/lib/libvirt/images. How can I make HomeAssistant install to the default with my other KVMs?
Sounds like you need to copy it there, rather than running it from there
Thank you, I'll try that. Curious how I can install other KVMs direct from the ~/Downloads directory and the KVM installs in /var/lib/libvirt/images though? It takes me a few hours to install and add z2m as I'm a noob. I hope this solve it.
Would be good if I could just move the installed haos_ova-11.5.qcow2 from ~/Downloads to /var/lib/libvirt/manager.
...or maybe some type of Home Assistant or KVM backup, to restore in the correct path?
Well, HA knows nothing about that
You're 100% in the hands of your VM manager there
Ok, thank you.
To be very clear, HA(OS) has no say about what your VM manager does
No VM does
At best they know they're in a VM (with hardware detection) and, with the right drivers, can talk a bit with the VM manager
Hello, I have a question. I installed HA via Docker and everything worked great, but I can't install any addons... I think I have the core version. Can I also install a Full HA version in Docker?
HAOS or HA Supervised?
No, you can't
But add-ons are just software running in a container, there's nothing you can't do yourself
If you want add-ons then dedicate the host to HA with HAOS, or run HAOS in a VM
If you really hate yourself then try Supervised, but don't say we didn't warn you not to π
Ohh okey. I've trying to install HA with Nordvpn Meshnet, but I only managed it with Docker which works over Windows with Nordvpn. Any other idea how I can get it done?
ππokey
Get what done?
Can I install HAOS on a VM and install Nordvpn Meshnet on a Linux operating system, for example?
Sure, whether that'll do what you want though ... no idea
Okay, i give it a try. π Thanks for your answers. π€
If I want to install HA on a m2 Mac mini, will I have to do it though a VM or homebrew?
VM would be the sane way
sorry, just tuned into this channel for the first time, RPi 5 install eta?

Same question. Just bought one recently to upgrade from 4b and idiotically never looked to see if it was even suppprted.
hi everyone.. I'm coming here after full day of battling with starting up my 6yo instance of HA that suddenly stopped working :(((
could you please try and help?
i am currently cloning my existing VM into a new one to see if it will pick up
this is the error I get:
Error returned from Supervisor: System is not ready with state: setup
this has all started after swtiching my adguard raspi off for like 5 mins...
turn the adguard pi back on
restart your router
then restart HA
if you have your router pointing at the adguard pi to handle dns, then its going to give you issues when you turn that off
you'll see those issues all across your network too
not just HA
this is assuming you followed a guide to setup adguard
@empty bloom so this was running fine for months/years. router was setup to adguard DNS. HA was set up to router IP. I understand how one break another. what I don't understand is - how could this break my whole setup.
I am battling whole day today - literally - to get this fixed.
because, if HA doesn't have a dns server it does odd things
HA starts forever. most services don't work. once startup (happened once since) - it keeps popping up with disconnected message.
poorly configured dns can take down everything that HA tries to talk to
especially if you don't use static ips and you use hostnames for everything or things are going through mdns. It also depends on how you set up adguard as the dns server for your router
and it depends on your router
i understand this - but as said - DNS downtime was like 5mins - then back online - this was around noon - now its like 8 hours later and still massive breakdown :/
restart if the server is back up
reboot?
yep even powercycle proxmox machine and unifi router
supervisor and the internal dns server for HA need to restart, so reboot is what I meant
in CLI: supervisor restart - done this, dns restart - done this too
I understand the reasoning for system not working right with bad DNS - but this is something else :/
no, the system HA runs on needs to restart, unless you know how to restart all the small containers that HAOS is running that are 'hidden'
and if this is something else, then you'll need to provide logs
otherwise it's a guessing game
but whenever adguard is involved, adguard needs to be running before HA can start.
to rule DNS game out- I have changed DNS server on unifi router to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 - I really hoped this would fix it but it did not.
after you make that change you need to reboot HA
ive got 10% left of cloning - ill try running clone
if anything - I've got backup but want to avoid this as much as i can
I have done it - yes
@empty bloom could you please have a look if this is correct?:
ha > dns info
fallback: false
host: 172.30.32.3
11mmr: true
locals:
-dns://192.168.1.1
mdns: true
servers:
dns://192.168.1.1
dns://192.168.1.1
update_available: false
version: 2023.06.2
_version_latest: 2023.06.2
ive added two servers just a moment ago as one was reading local ip, second was 1.1.1.1
i am restarting HA from dev tools right now - still takes forever to load up and still disconnects when in lovelace
@empty bloom - could you please point me at which logs to get? supervisor, core or others?
Supervisor logs
on it
@empty bloom here is supervisor: https://pastebin.com/k0qSdLVU
on the CORE log - there is a lot of warnings for HA companion app widgets - still sifting throught this
Looks like you have some cloud flare issues
this has never cought my eye - and to be fair - cloudflare works like a charm
im sorry- I am unable to keep upright anymore and will have to come back to this tomorrow :/
thank you @petro for your support!

How do you check how much it uses? How much does it use? How did you configure the memory limit?
Looks like hass is having adguard problems.
I also had to remove adguard on Hass yesterday

I removed adguard but still got error message with adguard ip
I have restarted all devices
and this is the reason my hass is frequently restarted when this error occurs
v2024.1.0 is no problem
Hi - having trouble accessing homeassistant.local:8123 after installing HA to SD card
I dont have ethernet connected - maybe why?
Try the ip instead. Check your router for DHCP leases. Otherwise connect a keyboard and mouse and check what it displays.
Oh. I believe the pi imager allows you to configure WiFi pre-install but it's not recommended. The docs mention a network cable: https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/raspberrypi/#start-up-your-raspberry-pi
Thanks. Is that achieved with ha dns info?
I'm not sure what specifically you refer to but no.
That was it. I had to connect ethernet cable. Thanks. β€οΈ
I have limited it to 4gb of ram in VMware config, but after a few days in windows activity monitor I see all the ram is occupied by VMware and a windows service which manages virtual machines
Can you share a picture of both of this?
I can try, I configured remote access to the machine but obviously with all the ram occupied idk if I will be able to log
Corrupted HAOS installs
Little strange thing. I have raspberry pi 3b with home assistant os 11.5. I received another modem from my internet provider and now also a different external IP. All equipment works normally, port forwarding is also no problem. After the new modem has been switched on, the home assistant no longer has a connection outside. There is no way I can ping or traceroute to cloudflare.com. If I do it via my phone or PC, no problem. But home assistant has no internet.
I have changed it to dhcp. That was not helping. Then i changed it back to static ip. Nothing is working.
ipv6 is disabled.
Can you ping 8.8.8.8?
no only inside ip address
traceroute getting de gateway 192.168.1.1 and then only * * * *
nmcli g status i am getting connected (site only) limited connectivity
Then you've a problem with the default gateway and/or subnet mask
IPv4
IP Address: 192.168.1.250/24
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Method: auto
Name Servers: 192.168.1.1
Router ip 192.168.1.1 and subnet 255.255.255.0
Default adapter
Adapter: eth0 (Default)
192.168.1.250/24, fe80::ee3b:3fe9:a971:8266/64
Then ... the problem lies with your router at 192.168.1.1
That is strang because every device is working from my synology nas and laptop. Phone
I am going to syslog my router to find any blocking.
can it be a route in home assistant os/ network?
haos has been acting strangely for me too the past few days
could anyone have a look at my thread ?
Thanks !

hi folks. In the recent days I had HA randomly restart on me, without any apparent reason. HA is running in a HAOS setup on a VM, so I can exclude power or SD card issues
I think this started happening when I upgraded to 2024.2 and HAOS 11.5. I already rolled back HAOS to 11.4 yesterday, and that didn't seem to fix anything
well, there it goes again, that can't have been up for more than 10 minutes this time
Is it the whole VM, or just the HA Core container?
I think it's just the core container
but good point, let me check
so opening the terminal uptime gives me ~ 22 h of uptime, which about works out to when I rebooted everything last night in attempt to see if that would fix things
but HA via the "uptime" integration reports an uptime of four minutes only
oh, and there it goes again
Ok, so the container is restarting, which helps narrow it down
What custom integrations do you have?
a bunch, I can get you a list once the UI is back
Start by starting HA in safe mode
If it stops crashing the problem is in one of those
at some point yesterday it did stop crashing, and I guess I had ~ 20 h of uptime before things started happening again right now
but first I need to get the kid back to bed
I wouldn't want to go to bed at 11AM either
Unfortunately for her it's a tad later here
Ok, so there are three integrations not running in safe mode. Hacs, ui-lovelace-minimalist, and an integration tracking our energy consumption using an api with the national energy office. I trust the latter the least
HACS should be fine, it's probably in most HA installs
Yeah, I'm also pretty convinced that if that was broken a heck of a lot more people would be complaining
Ok, let's see if things stay stable just with hacs
hm, I guess the circadian lighting integration is also custom, and doesn't show up on the integration page
The built-in integration is called Flux. It is quite limited in function.
Circadian Lighting or Adaptive Lighting on HACS are more powerful
yeah, I'm using the circadian lighting integration from HACS, I'm pretty happy with it
provided I don't let it futz with the brightness π
40 minutes without crash, looking good so far. I'll reenable the minimalist UI thing and see how that goes
hi, I'm running home assistant OS in an old laptop, but for some reason its running on the external usb drive where I ran balena etcher. Is there a way to make the installation on the main drive on a partition?
I had the idea the boot drive would run a installation program to install itself on the laptop, but it wasnt the case
Yes, write the image to that "main drive"
Hello, I have followed the tutorial online but when I booted everything up I was left stuck at the command line, is everything just not yet done or did I do something wrong. I have the ability to type in the command line so thatβs where the worry of I did something wrong is coming from.
I am using a raspberry pi4
you need to visit the website at http://http://homeassitant.local:8123 or via the IP address. Ignore the console
you aren't stuck in a terminal window
you need to use a browser
from another machine
from the docs:
In the browser of your desktop system, within a few minutes you will be able to reach your new Home Assistant at homeassistant.local:8123.
ohhhhh major mixup on my part, i was thinking i had to get to that browser from my pi, wil try this, thank you
Hm, back to safe mode. Really "fun" to debug this. I guess I'll try running a given set of integrations for a day now before adding another one back
Ooooh, now it also crashed in safe mode. So it's not one of the custom integrations.
oh well, let's see if rolling back to the previous version fixes things
Hi! I get an error trying to update Supervisor.. Running on a HA Green. Hi. I've installed home assistant os on an old laptop (bare metal). Is there a way to have the server keep running when the lid is closed? Also if the screen can be turned off?
well the lid closed might be a bios setting but you could also just unplug the ribbon cable for the monitor
I'll check the bios but I thought it was handled by the OS? If I can't do it I'll have to unplug the ribbon cable. Was hoping to find a solution before opening it up. Thanks!
This seems to suggest this should be the default behavior of HAOS?
https://github.com/home-assistant/operating-system/pull/1100
Maybe open an issue in the OS repo if its going into suspend.
@kindred vapor
Hmm okay. Mine seems to suspend when I close the lid. I'll look into opening an issue. Thanks!
2024.2.3 just hangs there waiting to be reviewed. π€¦ββοΈ

Hi guys, I'm new to homeassistant and I'm experiencing issues accessing my server at the normal address http://homeassistant.local:8123/ , it's giving me ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED
My setup: HA running as a VM on an unraid server
I CAN access the VNC console for the VM and it ostensibly seems to be running fine
I've tried restarting the VM, and also trying to access HA at <server IP>:8123 and <server name>:8123 and even tried rebooting the entire server, no dice!
I've been in this situation for a few days now but before that it seemeed to be working ok.
Please let me know if there is any other info I can provide, I'd like to get this running without starting fresh since I already configured zigbee2mqtt!
Note: it appears that @glossy solar and I are having the very same issue with the GUI on our unraid servers https://discordapp.com/channels/330944238910963714/332167321311510530/1210228343891304458
hi, sry but i canΒ΄t read the full discussion. is it possible to make an Backup from my 32-bit HAOS and use it bto a 64-bit HAOS?
@carmine rampart backups donβt contain system info. Should be fine
ok thanks
Hi folks, im hoping someone may have some advice, ive followed insatriction on bad nov batch issue and im still having trouble with Proxmox + HAOS + skyconnect not being recognized in HA devices integrations. Im hopinh there is a part 2 that explains what im doing wrong.. i even unplugged and replugged the usb in 10 times.. lol. i do see the device in the terminal but HA doesnt seem to give a crap.
i should not be having this problem...
I see the new "Core" 2024.2.3 is released, however the update is not pushed through HAOS yet. Anybody know why ?
It likely still builds the image
Hasn't been released yet, still needs to be reviewed
My guess is that it has been forgotten.
I have Home Assistant OS running in a VM (KVM). I want to move this over to its own physical machine. Is my best course of action to figure out some way to get the VM's disk image onto a physical disk or is there some kind of backup and restore method that is known to work well? The major consideration is that I have a big Zigbee mesh that I do not want to have to rebuild from scratch.
I am trying to set up my roomba and I am getting this log
@golden condor I converted your message into a file since it's above 15 lines :+1:
definitely a backup and restore method. works pretty well.
thanks to those attempted to help me. My issue ended up being initally a bad card, and then the flash software must have been bad. I booted the RPi with no card and ran the installer from RPi. Same new card I was using and it was fine. I'm back now.
Was 2024.2.3 pulled? I don't see the release yet this morning.
Hasn't been approved for release yet
Looks like a bug was found post-build so they've paused things while that's addressed
Hello i have a problem with installation on raspberry pi 5. When i try to configure on website then there is an error that says 'Updater.fetch_data' blocked from execution, no supervisor internet connection and I don't know what that means
Are you using Home Assistant OS?
Do you have a network cable plugged in?
1.Yes
2.Yes
What version of HAOS are you using?
11.5
I thought pi5's weren't supported yet?
I downloaded it on raspberry pi imager
Right, but HA hasn't released anything for a pi5 yet
Did you use the image for RPi4 from the imager?
There are Pi5 images, but they're not stable yet
Oh
oh, okay thank for help
Is the only way to update/upgrade HA (core/supervisor/os) to a specific version is via the terminal/command line? ex: ha core update --version xyz
I'm also curious how you can update an add-on to a specific version--if I don't want to go to the latest just yet?
Yes and you cannot
Bummer. Hopefully there's already a feature request in to be able to both of these things--and from the webui.
If you have a feature request for the frontend you can open one here, for Home Assistant itself please post on the forum. All other feature requests should be made to the developer of that custom card/component.
so i've got a bit of an issue: a while back my Pi3 went kaput, and was recently able to replace it with a pi4. is there some way i can recover my install without having to get another pi3?
Step 0 is to avoid having this problem again: make sure you set up a backup that gets the files off the device.
Step 2 is to try and read the files from the SD card on the Pi 3, if you can. If the card is corrupt this will likely be difficult or perhaps impossible.
https://community.home-assistant.io/t/retrieve-backup-from-sd-card/365598
My Rasperry 3b+ just went south and I am planning to replace with a 4b. I assume HA will not run on the 4 by just swapping the SD from the 3, so is there anyway I can retrieve the config and/or most recent backup from the old SD card? I do have an external backup available so not completely on scratch, however I must admit it might be a couple ...
is it the .tar files in supervisor/backup im looking for?
@autumn vapor yes

In safe mode and normal mode Home Assistant crashes for me. Someone has posted a fault log showing a python segmentation fault. I don't see anything in my normal home assistant logs. I had to revert during the week but I'll try and see if my fault log has the same segmentation fault over the weekend.
Maybe caused by the python bump?

Yeah. Upgrading from 2024.1 to 2024.2 and my HA keeps restarting. Before I rolled back it was under every 8 mins at least 7 restarts.
I've had to restore a 2024.1.x back up
Right, so that means your assumption about the python version is not correct
er wait, did you edit your versions?
No
Interesting good point...I went straight to 2024.2.2 from 2024.1.x. I'll see if I can go to 2024.2.1
@empty bloom theres a scammer here
Not anymore
I'm happy to wait for a proper fix for these crashes, I'm not in a hurry to upgrade. π€·
You were right. My mistake. 2024.2.0 is stable. 2024.2.1 crashes so at least that narrows it down.
hi guys, I just booted my rbpi with home assistant and I'm stuck in the console that says this: "[WARN] Home Assistant CLI is not running! Jump into emergency consoleβ¦". What should I do?
Did you freshly install it or is this a existing installation?
fresh
In that case I'd recommend re-flashing it rather than wasting time with CLI commands. Perhaps with another SD Card if you use one. It's possible it fixes itself if you reboot it so I'd try that first. If you still want to check I'd start with systemctl status docker.service.

ok
I am new with home assistant Green. β¦. I setup my account but unfortunately I forget it β¦ is that anyway to reset and start from the beginning
You can change the password with physical access
https://www.home-assistant.io/docs/locked_out/
Or reset the Green
https://green.home-assistant.io/guides/reset/
I donβt have any user data β¦ so I could go to reset it β¦ do I need the SD card or if I donβt have any user data to be backup I donβt need the SDcard ?
I am asking that because I am on my vacation home and I donβt an SD tonight π
Many many thanks
The reset requires a MicroSD
What capacity it should be ?
You do not remember the username you chose?
The username should be my email address or itβs just a name
It doesn't have to be big. It is just performing the reset program
If you enter your name during the onboarding, it suggests the first name in lower letters as username
I think I remember the username β¦
Currently I'm running Home Assistant as a docker container with python-matter-server as another container for matter support. I'd like to migrate my setup to a HAOS install. If the machine running the HAOS install has a different IP than before, are there any special things I need to do when I export/import my setup?
Hey all. Having a bit of a nightmare getting haos on a system of mine. I've followed the instructions to the letter. I used the Ubuntu method initially I tried using the etcher tool, which kept crashing. It now refuses to boot into ha. I get these following screens.
Ok, I can't send images here. But I get the onboard efi bios command line come up
Hey! I was wondering. If I install home assistant into a VM, is it possible to install the add-ons? Since now that would mean layered virtualization. Does that work? Or do I need to use a container instead of a fully isolated VM? (Thinking of proxmox)
And then when I go into the bios to mess about with it. I get a choice of android-ia or uefi:built-in efi shell.

Yes that's possible and docker is not virtualization. Addons are docker containers. HA inside HAOS is running in a docker container as well. See here: #general-archived message
What you meant is usually called nested virtualization, btw.
I'd try number 3 there.
Yeah number 3 is the usb stick running virtual Ubuntu
You might have to follow the note here: https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/generic-x86-64/#start-up-your-generic-x86-64
I have tried that but I'll try it again before I drift completely off to sleep π
While ubuntu is booted (via UEFI) please run lsblk -o+LABEL,FSTYPE,MODEL in a terminal so we can see if it was flashed properly at all.
Yup.
Ok just booting now
These are just some options so it also shows the partition label (hassos-data), file system type (ext4) and the disk model. Just useful to know and helps with identification.
Hey, I'm happy to see if I've done anything wrong mate, I'm greatful for the pointers
I entered it
Command not found
You might have to enter sudo -i to switch to root first. I can tell you more if I see the CLI.
That's the same picture from here: #installation-archived message
You should maximize the window with the π³
Sadly you still get the same amount of data (I tried
Just found zoom out
Hold on....I'll try again
It's more about the word wrapping. I have real hard time with it. That looks okay though. At least the partitions are all there.
You can try the command from the note I mentioned earlier. Replace /dev/<drivename> with /dev/mmcblk0.
Alright thank you
So in your case it would be something like
efibootmgr --create --disk /dev/mmcblk0 --part 1 --label "HAOS" --loader '\EFI\BOOT\bootx64.efi'
You can also run efibootmgr on its own to list entries but this will probably not be all that helpful.
I've just put that in
Otherwise I'm not going to sleep ππ
Want to see the results?
In theory it should now show up when you run efibootmgr and in the UEFI as boot option.
Or shall I just reset the pc now and go another round?
