I was running in VM before but esxi6.7 did not support the new zigbee stick so switched to physical device (no regrets tbh)
Is there any good guide on what can be removed from configuration.yaml now that more and more moves into the gui?
No
Okay, what from this could be removed and handled from within the gui now? https://imgur.com/a/OUW5SrB
Images of text are horrible
Please use a code share site to share code or logs, for example:
- http://pastie.org/ (select YAML for the language)
- https://dpaste.org/ (select YAML for the language)
- https://paste.debian.net/ (you guessed it, select YAML as the language)
Please don't use Pastebin, since it can randomly add spaces to the main view. Please also don't share text as images since it makes it harder for people to help you. Remember that others may have colour blindness, impaired vision, etc.
base_url died a year or two back though
Hi! I am running into some weird issues when trying to update my HomeAssistant to Version 9.0. I am running the system on an Asus Tinkerboard, and when I try to update the system never seems start backup. I've tried waiting several hours on the update with no luck. Any suggestions?
Updating Home Assistant OS ... HA isn't at version 0 😉
Ahh! I am sorry, the OS is trying to update to v.9.0 but fails continuously 🤨
I have been running Home Assistant on a RPI 4B 8GB. But I now I want the hardware to be multipurpose. I was thinking of ubunto server. But do I install docker on it? Or does it not work like that? Or is there a better alternative?
Guys, I'm thinking to move from my pi to a laptop I have which uses only 12 to 17 W idling.
My first obstable is the ssd it has. a 1.8 inch ssd
This means I cant connect it to a sata port on my computer to write the image.
Also, I'm not sure if it has bios or uefi. if it has bios, is this laptop usable?
I have an odroid with home assistant pre-installed. Now I want to install a zigbee module (conbee2), but there are different kinds of installation types. Which one should I use? Raspbian, Ubuntu or docker?
The way I have done it is by creating a VM server, and have HAOS installed as a VM, and have then other VM's running other tasks (like Pi-Hole, Zigbee2MQTT, etc)
Is there a package manager on HASS OS? I want to install less
Hi, i am not sure where to begin. I have over 50 zwave light switches installed around the house, however nothing is setup yet. I have a raspi4, m.2 ssd and a zwave controller that i want to setup but I have no clue where to start? I am very new to home automation and raspi and kind of a newbie. Any help would be appreciated!
You start with an install of Home Assistant on the Pi. Then you introduce HA to the zwave controller (USB?) and then you pair your devices with the controller and they appear in HA
Oh i see, thank you! I wasn't sure! How would i go about installing home assistant? And would i need to format the ssd first?
Nevermind, i think i found the page. Thank you again!
What is the difference between installing the HA OS vs docker container? Is there a benefit to having it run on a docker container? Also do i need to install the raspi OS/docker too?
Why is this?
HA OS is powered by docker and manages it for you. Add-ons are software outside of HA which are run in containers. HA is in a container. The supervisor manages this. A plain Docker install is where you manage it and all other containers yourself
Ubuntu is a good desktop, and not a great server software
Affirmative. Sorry for the @ ping, but feel free to use it on me if possible xoxo
You convinced me though, going for RPi OS 64.but
If I'm moving from my 6-year old 16 GB SD to an actual A2 SD with 128 GB to boast, do I do a full or partial backup?
Any idea why a Start job would be taking 1 hour 7 mins ? any good way to debug this? https://imgur.com/a/EeRFMdd
about 2 months ago i had to load my vm hard disk onto a linux install so i could browse it and i renamed a docker folder to fix an issue with a container breaking the boot in a similar fashion, with it saying it's doing an audit i'm wondering if it's trying to load that old one
Really dont want to have to just download the latest VM and start from scratch
I wanted to move HA from a 16 GB SD to a 128 GB SD, but the system crashes after starting to restore the backup. I don't know how long it usually takes, but does the Pi reboot after the restore?
Or do I have to yolo power surge it?
it should automagically come back..
moving to an ssd would be a lot cooler
Waited for 20 minutes and did a yolo power surge and its back with the backup lol
Can agree to this
it's not much more expensive to buy a decent ssd and usb3 to sata adapter
damnit HA Discord
under $40
laziness as in wanting to not have to fuck with it again when sd eventually fails?
Anyhow, is it possible to step out of the supervisor and use the HA to run containers and stuff?
Got an A2 SD card and hoping for the best
if you want control then dont run haos lol
Run the docker install
you can technically make your own addons (containers)
I ran the container and was like ugh no add-ons and backup restores fuckit
i've found pretty much any addons i want already exist
ya i prefer haos
Is there an addon for flashing smart switches n shit?
like tuya convert?
probably not
better to just not buy that kind of shit imo
or get another pi to do it
This is the issue tho lol
i did that once.. rather just buy better shit
you can just use a different microsd card
Backup you do yourself (far more power then) and add ons are just fancy containers anyway
flash then boot hass up again
I'd rather have a stable convert setup within my actual OS. Tried the tuya convert setup but it fails at apt-getting the prereq script
As in, it'd be cool if my actual HAOS setup could convert bulbs too lol
Most of us don’t buy tuya convert shit
We buy stuff already flashed with tasmota or esphome and OTA flash them from a pc or something
Or from esphome or tasmota addons in haos
What does ESPHome do specifically?
Or buy zigbee or zwave
That's what I do, ZigBee everything
Except for a few tuya ones that I wanted to purposely try flashing lol
But so many of these devices are very basic, I don't see the need to buy expensive ones.
You can buy preflashed bulbs and plugs and stuff for not much more than tuya without the hassle
Saving $5 or whatever isn’t worth it lol
How well does localtuya work?
Plus a lot of them are getting chips that can’t be flashed as easy or at all
That works without the flashing or hacking doesn't it?
I avoid tuya like the plague so no idea
Lots of people seem to have issues even with localtuya
Tbf I set up the tuya cloud thingy and it works like a damn charm
I dont disagree with that
I have a lot of Tuya stuff, mainly because it is widely available where I live, and it is affordable.
My wife is not a big supporter of the home automation thing.
So, I try to keep it affordable and justifiable as much as possible.
I do want to bring most of it local (while keeping it all affordable)
Simply for the fact that I want to still be able to control my lights when we lose internet.
I did try adding one light to localtuya, but it doesn't work (probably cause it is still integrated to HA with the regular Tuya integration).
hi, i have a t-228a qnap NAS with ARM 64 bits, i followed all the tutorial for install the docker from "container station" but any version starts, i have a 256 exit code error., Any tip? thanks
Until your internet goes down or the cloud stops working
ZigBee doesn't have to be expensive either. Temperature, etc sensors easy to get from AliExpress and cheap. Bulbs from IKEA are cheap, other places online too
+1 for localtuya, my integration has been solid and response times are impressive. Instantaneous for me.
Hi, I am trying to use https://grafana.com/docs/grafana-cloud/data-configuration/integrations/integration-reference/integration-homeassistant/ which requires installing grafana agent, but I seem to fail at this, first because the scripts does not support "LINUX" as an OS 😅
Second I think I am missing some libraries or something as running the executateble gives me "file not found" and that seems to be related to https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/378301/linux-executable-fails-with-file-not-found-even-though-the-file-is-there-and-i.
Does anyone have a good solution or pointer, or can tell me I am trying to do something the wrong way 🙂
updated HAOS to 2022.09 and lost ethernet driver
14 hours and 49 mins later and startup job is still running
Tried restarting it?
I hadn't at that point, as i was waiting on a response and had forgot about it and went to bed, though looks like it's doing the same thing after rebooting
Are you running HAOS or some other method?
HAOS in Virtualbox
I've got a HAOS fresh install stuck at "INFO (MainThread) [supervisor.resolution.fixup] System autofix complete" (proxmox VM using the qcow2 disk image). The supervisor log proceeds to this point then nothing else happens. Any ideas where to start?
Can HAOS be ran on a computer like a normal OS. Not using a Rasbery Pi.
Yea
Using the x86 install method for HAOS
That was what I was hoping for. The install page doesn't make that clear. Going to be using Frigate NVR and Trying the free way before using UnRaid.
Thanks @brittle sail and @manic bane
@copper nymph remember the same restrictions apply to it even if it's running on x86. You can't install stuff, you can't run other containers (except for add ons of course)
I’ve never been held back by haos
More so if they want to install other stuff on the hardware that HAOS is running on
Thanks. Sorry for any inconvenience Brand new to all this. One of those guys who watches an LTT vid and be like. "I can do that."
Trying to get started.
That's awesome! Good luck with it!
Find a better YouTuber lol
LTT is fun to watch. It's entertainment
XD yea. Piecing this together. Been 6 instances of edge and most of them full later.
Trying to run Frigate and then realizing that Windows aint the OS to use. Just cant buy UnRaid atm.
I accidentally turned IPV4 to disabled when attempting to set to static, is there a way to re-enable ?
Hey guys I've been trying the whole day to setup an OVA Image with Qemu behind a http proxy. It seems like there is no setting for that
You can run stuff on just a raw Linux install and use docker too
It shouldn't matter how it's installed, just in the configuration.yaml you add the necessary proxy config
How do I edit the configuration file ?
The install fails cause it has no internet connection
I tried editing the /etc/environment to set the HTTP_PROXY but the filesystem is read only
Pretty sure it's not possible
:/
Looks like it was briefly talked about but went nowhere
Is this a home network you're trying to use it on @ember tendon
No. I'm porting openthread to the atmel r21 and I want to add Homeassistent support
hi all. im having a problem with my hasos restarting every 10-15 minutes. nothing obvious in the logs that i can see. can someone help? here are the logs of the host: http://pastie.org/p/1yhIatQ5BOwVn1aMmb9pHQ
I'm behind a company network
Is there any way to edit the etc/environment file ? Docker should use the proxy if the HTTP_PROXY env variable.
Is set
Unless HA doesn't respect it as an OS
You're better off trying just a plain docker install
HAOS itself won't use it
You're going to have to use Docker or a pure Core install
Might be better to ask in #developers or something
I'm gonna try my luck there thanks
hi all. im having a problem with my hasos restarting every 10-15 minutes. nothing obvious in the logs that i can see. can someone help? here are the logs of the host: http://pastie.org/p/1yhIatQ5BOwVn1aMmb9pHQ
I dont think I can install HAOS. My computer doesn't have a UEFI. . . .....
can someone help? 🙂
How old is the PC?
Have any upgrades been added to the build since it was purchased?
Also, what is the wattage on the power supply?
It’s likely software, but I don’t want to just assume.
Rule out hardware first.
So glad the rescue shell was added in the last version, since no one seems technical enough to be able to have any inkling of my issues it lets me investigate, when before i'd have had to connect the hd image to another vm
does anyone know the docker login details for hassos?
Does anyone at least know how to disable auto start on an addon from the terminal?
Hey all, I’m working on upgrading my RPi4 HA to a new Linux docker setup and am trying desperately to figure out how to restore my backup and so far failing miserably
I have copied over the content of my unpacked config folder from the pi, but it looks like essentially nothing is working . Missing dashboards, automations, devices, integrations, everything
If anyone can point me to a resource for how to actual restore things, I’d be massively appreciative
is there anyway to bypass docker on boot? such as a kernel parameter?
Unpack the archive, copy the contents to the directory you're mounting for docker
f**k it once i can get into the damned vm and copy my config im creating a new vm from scratch, and once my server is up and running i'm moving to supervised
I did this and nothing is restored? There’s a few things that made it, like some scenes, but nothing else.
Why would you move to supervised. It's just more hell. Just run docker
according to the page on versions the docker version doesnt support addons
only os and supervised
Can you post a screenshot of the folder structure?
Yes but add-ons are just fancy containers
You can run anything alongside it
There's more flexibility with docker
i'll try that version first, it's less likely to make me want to go on a rampage with a flame thrower at least
Please don't use supervised. It's not good unless you're and expert and want to give yourself hell.
Docker is a much better system to have fine grained controls
Supervised & core have very specific use cases
i meant docker
Yea it’s basically not a full version of home assistant if you’re using docker
It seems to be all there?
Hello, I'm trying to disable the USB autosuspend feature on the HAOS running on generic x86-64 as it currently returning the value 2 after running
cat /sys/module/usbcore/parameters/autosuspend
According to the zigbee2mqtt FAQ the command to disable this would be:
sed -i 's/GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="/&usbcore.autosuspend=-1 /' /etc/default/grub
update-grub
systemctl reboot
but it currently returns:
sed: /etc/default/grub: No such file or directory
any idea where grub could be hiding?
its a RPi 4. it is only running hasos, and has been working fine for over 2 years now with no change (power supply or other).
I bricked my HA Blue by adding http: ssl_certificate: /ssl/fullchain.pem ssl_key: /ssl/privkey.pem ip_ban_enabled: true login_attempts_threshold: 5 to configuration.yaml. I can access HA via a keyboard & screen on the blue cli by typing login but I can't find the configuration.yaml file. The /home & /root directories show nothing using the "ls" command. Question: how do I edit the file to remove the offending code so I can restart HA? Note: It is bricked because I can't access HA via browser, PuTTy, TailScale, nor SambaShare. So https://www.home-assistant.io/getting-started/configuration/ nor other searches have helped.
I found the /mnt/config directory but using ls it shows nothing.
By default, the configuration.yaml file is in /root/config
Thanks for replying. /root shows nothing with the ls command. I found /config under the /mnt directory but again ls shows nothing.
Looking closer, it seems that /root/config is a symlink to /config, try there?
just so you know, I'm not fluent in linux so feel free to treat me like a 5 year old with your help.:)
Sure, try cd /config and ls there
under /root it returns the error: /bin/ash: can't find cd to /config: no such file or directory
Hmm, interesting. If you do cd / and then ls, what do you see?
Just to make sure we are on the same page: I am at the # prompt after typing login at the cli prompt.
I get the list of directories including root, mnt, home, dev, etc, and others
Oh, interesting. login seems to expose a different set of directories than SSH does. One sec, let me reorient to that
Alright, try cd /mnt/data/supervisor/homeassistant that should have a yaml file for you
Your the man! Thanks. One last question, nano doesn't work. What is the editor command?
found it. vi
I really appreciate it. The last is: what is the reboot command to restart HA
You're looking for vi. Remember to edit the document, you need to press i first (interactive mode) and then to save and quit, you need to hit ESC and then type :wq and hit ENTER
thanks so much.
You're looking for shutdown now -r
It's possible Home Assistant has a nicer one, but I'm a Linux person and that worked just fine.
esc doesn't do anything
In vi? All it does it change you from interactive mode to... uh... command mode? It lets you type in the command space instead of the document.
ESC literally means the escape key, not the letters e, s, and c
(Likewise ENTER is the enter key)
Yes, the escape key
Wait what does the -r do. That reboot? I normally just do reboot in Linux 😂
Correct, the -r flag is for reboot.
I'm stuck in the edited file. the 'esc' key won't pull me out.
I'm sorry I'm making this so complicated.
If you type a letter, it shows up in the document?
yes
Let me test some options and get back to you.
thanks, no hurry, I'll wait.
Alright, if ESC isn't working, apparently CTRL+[ does the same thing
also not working.
Ok,
I
I'm out. I'' do it again, hopefully correctly this time. The 'esc' seems to require I continue with the :q! or other command without sending me to some other prompt. So, I was looking for a # prompt after the 'esc' key press. Again. Thank you.
I'll do it again.
Ah, yeah, it drops you to vi command mode. Which basically is just the "bottom" line on the screen. If you notice when you first enter vi, is says something like - configuration.yaml 1/50 2% and when you hit ESC and start typing, it'll replace that information.
That is exactly what happened. This information is going into my cheat sheet.
Also, just noticed, please use :wq as that means "write" and "quit" whereas :q! means "quit" "forcibly!" meaning it'll just discard your changes.
👍
(Though the first time, you probably did want to discard, luckily CTRL+C will still shut down vi, like most programs)
Thanks for sticking with it until it was resolved.
So it rebooted correctly? 🙂
I just now logged in. Yes, I'm in. The reboot took a while
This is why I like to ask questions. I had thought it was a new install on a PC.
Whatever the original cause, having it reboot spontaneously is bound to cause file system damage. I would try to reinstall the system, and restore from a recent backup.
It is possible that the system is rebooting gracefully, but that much is unclear. I have not yet checked the logs you posted. It is currently 1:30 AM, and I need to go back to sleep.
Anyone any idea on how to disable the USB autosuspend on HAOS?
Planning on doing a vmware->Linux->HA container setup. Never done anything like this before. Should I go with Ubuntu or Debian?
@cedar pine Debian
Okay cool thank you
Feel like I’m about to climb a mountain. Grateful for YouTube 😁
anyone know the default username and passwd?
There isn't one
There isn't one
See, what he said
haha
For SSH, sure, that's what #add-ons-archived are for
If you're expecting HAOS to be a fully fledged Linux install though, you're going to be disappointed
I’m looking to install home assistant on my raspi
I want the add ons but if I understand correctly I’d have to use the home assistant OS for that yea ?
Yes
Is there any way I can have home assistant w add ons and raspian os installed
No
@hybrid patrol addons extend the functionality. They are services other than Home Assistant
Hello
I am new to home assistant and I want to install it on a raspberry pi 400
I followed step by step the instructions to create the sd card and inserted into the raspberry. After few minutes the screen is showing me the Hime assistant command line with ip address and URL. I am stuck here, how do I switch to the home assistant screen now? Your assistance is greatly appreciated (it might be something simple and my question may be silly but I need help with this)
Thank in advance
C
Hi Tinkerer, I appreciate your help but I am still not clear, do I use another PC/laptop and introduce the ip address generated by the home assistant installation in the command line on raspberries pi? Or I restart the raspberry pi and use the browser in which case I need to replace the home assistant microsd card with the original Raspberry pi sd card to boot the raspberry os, I am not very proficient with IT.
@ripe pecan there's no screen to switch to. It's a server. You open a browser from another device and enter the IP address and port
You are visiting your own server's page in a browser
Enter the URL you saw in your browser address bar
You are not going to be making much use of that 400's keyboard, because it isn't needed unless there's a bigger issue
Hey my tuya won't update my devices, how can I fix that
I get it now, thank you very much
does the raspberry pi need to stay on and connected to internet via cable? I managed to open the HA on my ipdad and it stopped as soon as I powered off the raspberry, I powered back on the raspberry and the HA on ipad started to work again
If that's the Tuya #integrations-archived see the #integrations-archived channel
Yes, it does. HA runs on the Raspberry. If you turn it off, HA doesn't run
It make perfect sense now
Thank you Tinkerer and cogneato. I am sure I will have more questions down the line.
C
after HOURS of constantly rebooting my VM i finally got in and was able to install the samba addon to get my backups and config off it
Goodbye forever HAOS only docker from here on
Hi again
Anyone can tell me how to set up home assistant on the the raspberry pi 400 to connect to wifi instructions of cable please?
Thanks
C
i had ha running via container on one server, i copied the config to a new server and spun it up and when navigating to the frontend its trying to take me through the onboarding process 🤔
all i did was scp my ha dir over to new server. i moved the compose file out of that dir to a different one and updated the volumes but other than that 🤷♂️
startup logs show i have hacs installed and an mqtt error for not being updated yet: https://paste.debian.net/hidden/7f9071ed/
Hey, anyone know how i can fix a Error 1033 Argo Tunnel error
so I setup a custom domain though cloudflair and after few days I can't connect to the domain and pressed with the error above. I can still access the Webpanel on local network through the default address but not thought the link.
Wouldn't recommend running it off wifi. HA is server software and should be connected via ethernet
It is doable though I just don't know how
does there exist a guide or video for installing debian just for docker home assistant?
The standard debian install guides will be fine. Just install docker & docker-compose on-top of it
Then follow the HA Gude
*guide
just wanted verification on the install config
i assume no desktop environment and do ssh
That is the easiest way to do a server yes
Or use the console directly on the device you're installing debian on
okay thanks sorry for the stupid questions this is my first time doing this
The OS it's installed on is just whatever you want. As long as it has docker & docker-compose you're fine
I understand and make sense but I would still want to know how to set up and run it off the WiFi in case I need it. Could you tell me please how to do the set up, if possible? Thanks
all i did was scp my ha dir over to new
on Ip_bans, which I am seeing more and more lately, when opening my Safari browser window on desktop: why the ipv6 address when I explicitly disabled that in HA network settings?
Using the instructions here https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/alternative/#qnap-nas and grabbing the "latest" Docker container from here https://hub.docker.com/r/homeassistant/home-assistant/tags I end up with an old version of HomeAssistant (2021.7.4). How do I get a newer version?
That sounds like an issue with the QNAP
Hmmm...I thought it was just that I had not found the latest docker container. I thought the point of the docker container was that it was sort of self contained and didn't depend on my server. How and why would the qnap prevent a higher version of HA in a container?
It could be that the version of Docker is too old
You get things like https://community.home-assistant.io/t/qnap-docker-last-ha-version/208730
I just tried to install an addon (Esphome) and now suddenly my whole Home Assistant instance is offline. I've noticed more seemlingly random crashes lately. Is there a way to figure out what is going wrong?
Installed HA OS as a VM in Proxmox. Currently Promox still thinks the VM is running but nothing is available.
(running on a mini pc with SSD, so no sdcard)
ok....trying it again it worked (although I grabbed the "stable" version rather than "latest"). However, none of my Tasmota devices are showing as available and in the container I see "Setup failed for tasmota: Integration not found."
The docs do show :stable and not :latest...
Error when trying to stop the VM in Proxmox:
trying to acquire lock...
TASK ERROR: can't lock file '/var/lock/qemu-server/lock-100.conf' - got timeout```
a little help anyone pls? I'm trying to install the IKEA symfonisk volume control on HA...so far I got the device connected via deConz....how do I config it to use on my SONOS speaker?
With an #automations-archived
?
And see the links from the #automations-archived channel topic, and that channel for help writing them
Automations are how HA does things, how it responds to inputs and takes actions
fast question, if i set up a homeassistant instance on hyper-v and do a backup of the config, how seamless it is to migrate it to a completely different platform? do the complete backup just work regardless of the hardware platform?
The backup is just the configuration, it works regardless of the platform
What partition style should my m.2 ssd be when installing home assitant for the first time. I assume GPT would be fine right?
Doesn't matter, it'll get wiped
Okay thank you
hi sorry possibly stupid question here, but does it matter what format my ssd is in before i flash home assitant on it?
No, it'll get wiped
@ionic gyro posted a code wall, it is moved here --> https://hastebin.com/pufuwagewo

Raspbian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye), home assistant supervised install
Well, there's your problem
Supervised is only "supported" on Debian itself, not derivates
Hi, my supervisor won't come online after reboot. https://hastebin.com/pufuwagewo
I'm running on a RPI4, Raspbian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye), docker 20.10.17
Given that it's on a Pi, why on earth didn't you use HAOS?
yeah i am aware. I have this installation running for >1.5 year now (upgraded to bullseye months ago), and now suddenly this is popping up
Flash HAOS, restore a backup, job done
a bit too late for that. I have a very intensive installation
@ionic gyro When using Discord's Reply feature it defaults to pinging the person you reply to, which can get frustrating for the target. Use Shift + click on the Reply option, or click @ ON to @ OFF to stop this - on the right side of the compose bar.
You have to change this every time (thank the Discord devs for that).
Well, if you've got an install that's compliant with the Supervised requirements, switching to HAOS with a backup is trivial
If you've installed other software or otherwise ignored the requirements, well...
i am running stand alone docker containers
that is the case indeed
@ionic gyro When using Discord's Reply feature it defaults to pinging the person you reply to, which can get very frustrating for the target. Use Shift + click on the Reply option, or click @ ON to @ OFF to stop this - on the right side of the compose bar - you have to do this on every reply.
Or don't, and just wait for the recipient to get annoyed enough to block you.
appologies
Well, that's beyond my ability to help with. You've deliberately ignored the requirements, and that's known to cause the Supervised install to fail
Hopefully somebody else can help you
yea indeed. My whole house is automated, an extensive setup that is running for a long time. Most of it is completely down now. So i am kinda in half-panic mode right now
any pointers how could debug this?
Flash HAOS, restore the last backup
You'll have to handle the other Docker containers another way
yeah, thanks, i'll keep this in mind as a very-last-resort option 🙂 it would mean days of work. And buying separate hardware to install linux + docker to get those containers back.
You need to do that at some point anyway, since you're install is going to break, without warning, even if you get it working now
yeah you're right about that. I will do that . But it's not going to help my out of the current emergency
doing a sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade now. maybe it helps....
If your config files are only in the container, copy them out with https://docs.docker.com/engine/reference/commandline/cp/ and migrate to ha os.
Best way forward (what I also did for one of the systems I manage). Remove the supervisor and switch to HA docker installation.
Only thing you lose are add-ons but most can just be installed as plain docker as well.
yeah, that is kinda what worries me 🙂 i've all my sensor data in a ltss container with attached storage. I first need to find out and understand how to backup those sensor data before spooling up those containers again. Would be a first for me
And change the image to ghcr.io/home-assistant/home-assistant:stable, the current one relies on the supervisor.
hmmmm...... i am reading your suggestions, and trying really hard to decipher what to do. But i'm a bit out of my league now. It's very hard to learn/study when you have an emergency at home
it is very much appreciated of course
i'm using a ltss database
the default database of home assistant is not important for me 🙂
Well by default the config (and sqlite database) is mapped to /usr/share/hassio/homeassistant on the host. So that can just be re-used.
And if you've got backups off the host they're just an archive, easy to extract
(if you don't have them off the host, they're not backups)
i'm using dekiesel/timescaledb-postgis:1.7.4-pg12 to store my data (using the ltss custom component). So i would first need to backup the volume of that one. I dont have the skills yet to do so (would need some reading upfront first to learn how). Secondly, i need to backup my grafana dashboards (which is easy to do via the gui). Those two would be the most vital to me. After securing those, i can migrate to HASOS and install a backup . But than i need to find another RPI to install the timescaledb again. And i don't have a spare rpi here. In other words: a lot of steps to take.
Therefore, i am first trying to get everything up and running again somehow, before planning this migration
these things are so much easier if your house is not on fire lol 😅
If you've not got backups, that's a really Bad Thing ™️
i do have backups
So i would first need to backup the volume of that one. I dont have the skills yet to do so

but the last full backup is from some months ago
but this might be a way out indeed
let me think:
home assistant install backup is very recent (yesterday), which is in the cloud. Good.
last full image backup is from a couple of months back. I can put that back via clonezilla. After that i can put my home assistant backup back
but those steps can only happen after securing the volumes belonging to dekiesel/timescaledb-postgis:1.7.4-pg12 and some other containers
otherwise, i would miss sensor data from the last months.
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade did not fix it
hmm, if i find the root cause of the issue with the supervisor, i could at least get my system up and running again. And then plan a migraton strategy
If you have the observer running you can usually delete the supervisor container and restart and let it recreate it (don’t do this it observer is broken)
If the update is corrupt of supervisor you can sometime exec into the supervisor container and replace /usr/src/supervisor with the GitHub repo
docker exec -it hassio_supervisor /bin/bash
the observer is running. Thanks, another escape route 😅 i'll try now
i've deleted the supervisor container & rebooted the host. Supervisor is not recreated. I guess i have to install the supervisor by hand again?
<https://github.com/home-assistant/supervised-installer > following the steps here
it's working again. I've followed this guide https://peyanski.com/how-to-install-home-assistant-supervised-official-way/#How_to_Install_Home_Assistant_Supervised
@humble mirage, @zinc gyro, @ashen charm, @flat hull, @crude inlet : thank you very much for your help! you are amazing
Now let's find myself another rpi4 somewhere in the internet dungeons, and plan a proper migration stragegy to HasOS. This never again 😅
ha, i was just about to say: now that you've set that up, tear it all down and switch to HA OS or HA container
Exactly Tediore!
And improve your backups 😉
yeah, something weird was going with that: clonezilla gave an error 2 weeks ago when trying to create a backup. I have not been able yet to fix that error. I'm afraid that my samsung T5 ssd is starting to give problems. Even more reason to figer this out asap
would be an extreme small probability, since the ssd is only 1.5 years old, and the ssd is cooled properly
but stuff can break of course...
but the clonezilla error suggested physical damage
I'm dumb, need help
which would explain the sudden appearance of my supervisor error. Since i did not change anyting. And my system is running -despite being supervised- very stable for 18 months
Not a Linux guy, running home assistant on Linux, in a container.
Trying to edit config file, but I am not the owner of the home assistant folder.
What do I do?
If you've got a failing SSD then data loss is likely to happen at any time
sudo is your friend here
sudo nano /path/to/configuration.yaml
yup, i'll apply some diagnostics on my ssd this weekend.... hoping for the best
dmesg is also your friend here
If the kernel is logging errors then you need to know about them
That wasn't for you 😉
Sure, with sudo chown... but maybe you should be running HAOS instead
Can't, it's on a mini BTC miner
If you're "not a Linux" person, then either you need to learn Linux, or switch to HAOS
https://docs.linuxserver.io/images/docker-code-server may even be useful for you here
Map a volume to the HA config folder and you can edit files in a UI
Thank you
I hope you've already got working, tested, backups that you know how to restore from
Added Bitcoin sensor language to config, but it's not showing up as an available integration.... Any idea what went wrong? Lol
Yes, been running for a few months
The other main issue I have is the new native Bluetooth is not passing through the container (I think)
DBus service not found
Running... but have you backed it up and tested those backups?
Have several backups, haven't tested restoring them
Plus, of course, you have to be using privileged mode for the container
Then you don't have backups, you have hope
Privileged mode is covered in the official HA install docs for Docker
If you followed some random YouTube guide you're probably missing things you should know
i am now trying to update to the beta, but the "system not healthy message" keeps appearing, even after reboot.
referring to https://www.home-assistant.io/more-info/unhealthy/docker. But all criteria are met, except for "Running unsupported software" , which is the whole point to get a supervised install. And which is my current situation since 2 years. If my memory servers me well, this docker message was first grouped under " unsupported installation" , but it is now moved to the "unhealthy" section
that would explain my current blocker for upgrading. Does anyone recognize this behaviour? Docker message being moved from unsupported to unhealthy ?
Feel like I might not be editing the right configuration file...
Under system info, says it's in /config, but I don't have that folder anywhere
it's because that's the path in the container
by looking at where you mapped the volume to in your docker run command or docker-compose.yaml file
Docker run -v? Give an error
are you using docker run or docker-compose?
Yes?
that wasn't an inclusive or 😆
regardless, docker inspect home-assistant (or whatever the container name is)
Lol
then look for a Mounts section
Don't see that section
Nvm
Source or destination?
Wish pics were allowed here...
source. that's where the config folder is at on the host.
Ok that's my home assistant folder on my desktop
So I was editing the right config I guess, but it didn't change anything in HA
There is no /config folder
you need to restart HA after making any configuration changes other than what can be reloaded at developer tools > YAML
if you don't have a YAML tab there, then it's at configuration > server controls
I was fooled...stable actually gave me an even OLDER version....from 2020!!
Always run the configuration check command when you make changes. Don't trust the UI check - it misses some problems.
- HAOS & Supervised use
ha core check - Container uses
dockercommands - Core requires you to activate the venv first
@cunning river ☝️
Duplicate sensors found
yeah, you can only have one sensor: in your config file (the exception being packages, but that's another story)
So just group them?
i resolved my "unhealthy" warning: it turned out that portainer-ce was causing this message. I removed that container, and it's healthy again. Weird though, since that was running for 1 year now. Maybe the " blacklist" has been updated recently
now updating to the new beta to help testing
Saw it load in bottom left toast notification, but didn't show ilunder integrations. Trying again
Thank you tremendously for your help @brisk willow and @humble mirage
No luck
.share the results of a config check
Please use a code share site to share code or logs, for example:
- http://pastie.org/ (select YAML for the language)
- https://dpaste.org/ (select YAML for the language)
- https://paste.debian.net/ (you guessed it, select YAML as the language)
Please don't use Pastebin, since it can randomly add spaces to the main view. Please also don't share text as images since it makes it harder for people to help you. Remember that others may have colour blindness, impaired vision, etc.
Same issue here. Did you manage to fix this?
No result to share. Runs testing, then nothing
where are you looking at when checking for the sensor?
you'll want to look at developer tools > states or settings > devices & services > entities
Hi!
I am trying to install Home Assistant OS onto an Intel x86-64 system. I have an internal m2 drive. The guide says to use a live operating system on a flash drive (Ubuntu Try befor buy) and then use BalenaEtcher to install img to the internal drive. How on earth am I supposed to run balenaetcher on a live operating system? The ubuntu live system has no AppImage support, installing via apt fails, too.
Any ideas?
@ivory schooner you should be able to download it but you don't need it, anyway. You can use Ubuntu's built in disks utility
And then "restore image" (the HA OS image file) to the drive you want
I doubt theres an easy way to get etcher running on Ubuntu 22 live os. But using built in utility sounds great!
Thanks! I will try!
choose the disk, then at the top there should be somewhere to select "restore disk image" (3 dots maybe? I forget) then choose the .xz file

Hello everyone
Thank you for creating this community.
At the top when you are zero like me in debian, linux and company
I installed HA on my freebox delta by following a tutorial
However after reboot, HA did not restart
I still have access to the VM with putty
I managed to relaunch by rerunning the last steps:
sudo -u homeassistant -H -s
cd /srv/homeassistant
python3 -m venv .
source bin/activate
hass
I am now looking to modify the Configuration.YAML file
I tried with Winscp but I got a "Permission Denied" error message.
Well, you picked the method that requires you to have Linux skills
lol
I'd recommend that instead you start fresh with a HAOS VM
It doesn't require you to have any Linux skills
You have min in front of you in PV?
If the VM install is hard for you, then you're in real trouble trying to use the Core install
Hi all, brand spanking new to Home Assistant, bought a box from ameriDroid, it's plugged in and on the network, and I'm able to go to my local instance. Now my really, really dumb question. When I try and access the Remote Desktop via the Cloud, it's asking for a username and password. Where in the world do I find that? 😊
That'll be whatever you set for your user account when you set up HA
I don't remember doing that?
Well, they don't come pre-configured... or if they did I'd be concerned
And edge has no saved username or password, which it normally would automatically save.
apparently I did. I'm looking at the guide that came with the box, and I can see that's one of the steps. Oy, it's been a day.
And I guessed what it was after that, so thank you for answering and putting some sense back into my head.
I just need to edit the config file stp.
I do hope you're planning on learning a lot about Linux
Oh, and that you're prepared to install Python 3.10 from source in ... checks calendar ... about 3 months time
What is this editor! lol
I added the lines I need but how do you save with ^O?
CTRL+O & CTRL+X
See my previous statement about switching to HAOS
The problem is that I have 0 knowledge in VM. I use the VM of the delta freebox (French internet box). I managed to install HA only with this tutorial which describes step by step how to do it.
You have less than zero knowledge about Linux
Also, you'll need to install Python 3.10 in December
Hope you're ready for that 😉
I'm not ready for much actually.
Hey. Seems that yesterday i messed up my HA Supervised installation. I wanted to mount the NFS share into the HA container directly - therefore recreated the container with that share in Portainer
Since then my hassos-supervisor container is starting fine but reporting
22-09-30 06:50:16 ERROR (MainThread) [supervisor.api.middleware.security] Invalid token for access /info
errors
and in HA i cannot open any supervisor pages, VSCode doesnt work, etc
Odds are that it's not happy that you messed around with the container config. The Supervisor is supposed to be the only thing managing the containers. Did you try removing the container and letting it recreate it?
Hey. I think i just managed to fix it by issuing "ha core rebuild" command in hassio-cli container
Yup, that rebuilds the container
yeah, it seems that there's some kind of protection (?) build into hassos which checks if it talks with the genuine homeassistant container
Thanks for your help. It worked, got it up and running now.
Hi all. I was reinstalling homeassistant os on my odroid n2+ and installed hacs but after restart i cannot access homeassistant ip from local lan. anyone knows how to get around this?
404: Not Found
What's the best way to find what high memory usage is caused by? I tried the memory profiler but heapy doesn't run on my machines for some reason (Ubuntu 22.04). Is there another way? My HAOS VM sits at about 97% RAM usage (of 16GB) and even with most of my add-ons stopped it's only dropped to 90%
Are you using homeassistant.local or the actual IP?
either of them works
Freshly booted HA OS is sitting at 11% RAM which is much more reasonable; I could do with something equivalent to docker stats or even top at least to see whats sucking up RAM till it's full
Example from my Debian system:
matt@debian:~$ free
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 23933 2497 588 79 20848 20982
Swap: 978 1 977
Only about 2% of my RAM is "free" but you can also see that 87% of the RAM that's used is for buffers/cache which can be given back to applications at any time if needed (available)
That being said, if available is very low, then it might be cause for concern
@brisk willow Thanks, but it's not a cached/buffered etc issue, the memory is being used until there's none left. Anyway, I figured it out by process of elimination but was wondering if there were any tools built in to the OS since free/top are basically useless from a terminal session because theyre namespaced into the addon container. I don't see a way to run it as a privileged container or to use the host pid namespace etc.
i downloaded and set up home assistant core on a raspberry pi and the home assitant linux user it created seems to have a password? i can switch to the user running sudo -u homeassistant -H -s and then run everything fine but i want to ssh into the pi as that user! anyone have any idea what the password would be or how to remove that? please let me know. thanks
Hallo kann mir jemand helfen?
For anyone else trying to install or upgrade to the latest HA using Container Station in QNAP: Follow the instructions here https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/alternative/#qnap-nas EXCEPT don't get latest or stable as these are mapped to old versions. Instead, scroll through the list and find a recent one (I chose 2022.9.7). That worked for me!
Hallo kann mir jemand helfen
i didn’t set one but it prompts me with one when i try to ssh as homeassistant user
Have you tried just hitting ENTER without typing a password?
You would have to have set up that user and password
Is there a way to install yarn and node on HA OS? I would like to have some typescript language server features in Vim
Ah it's Alpine
Ah nice. That was easy
It’s not, that’s inside the SSH container
i didn’t set one but it prompts me with
Hi,
I run Homeassistant as docker container with "--network=host". However a new vlan interface of the host machine should be exposed to HA. How to do that?
Whats the different between core and supervised?
Hello. Could someone tell me how to stop HAOS? I want to start with a fresh mariadb and don't want the old sensor states to be transfered
there is a database file which you have to find and delete
I am searching for this quite a while now
I used phpmyadmin and dropped the databaase
If you want to clear the maraia db: yes just drop it (like it's hot) OR specify another database name, which will then be a new & fresh one
No matter what i try there is always some old historical data for the sensors and i can't get rid of it
Whats the different between core and
The Great Question About Life, the Universe, What's the Difference Between the Installation Methods and Everything
Also; in general - you don't want Supervised. Really.
hey guys, I have a problem
I have been running a home assitant suoervised for 3 years never had a problem
last weeks i have been migrating it to HAOS and all was working ok, but last 2 days its just keeps freazing all the time and reboots constantly
i donwgraded to a backup that i did 3 days ago that i know was working smotth and i still have the same problem
will a backup of HAOS restore everything, meaning operating system, HA and everything else?
Im not sure what to think, if its a software problem or maybe my hardware is failing
im running on a rpi 4 - 4gb with a external usb ssd
Hi, I'm brand new to Home Assistant. I'm moving over from Smartthings. I have Zigbee up and running and so far just have a smart plug (which is working great) and a Osram Lightitfy smart switch set up. The smart switch has been found by Home Assistant and I can see stuff like battery level and can make the identification lights blink, but when I build a simple automation (if on is pressed, turn on that smart plug) nothing happens
if i push a button on the switch, I don't see anything happen in the Logbook. I'm so new I'm not sure if I should be seeing anything but it seems like I should be
oh this may have been better posted in #general-archived. I thought I was in there, whoops
Hi all, not sure if this is the best channel for this, but I am struggling with going from HA OS 8.6 to 9.0.
I've not seen much chatter about it being as flaky is 8.0 to 8.5, so I guess there is something specific to my case.
Running the typical update form UI resulting in the process starting and mostly nothing happened for 3-4 hours beyond a brief installing being shown in the UI followed by the same window with the option to start an update again.
How much free space do you have?
I was unable to update recently and it was because I was out.
I have my HA running in a VM so I restarted the VM and went on to install it again which seemingly worked better because about 30-40 min later it showed as if the HA OS 9.0 was running but there were some corruptions of my VM, so I reverted to a snapshot from before the update and am back here to ask for assistance.
Flexible VM partition with about 400 GB of space on the partition where the VM lives...
ha ok yeah, a teensy bit more than I had then. 😄
I am getting the following error now when I try to update followed the recovery of the snapshot.
It seems as if the update is running, I guess??
It looks like supervisor is not really taking it well.
I've tried restartin it from CLI but it wouldn't, so I am repairing it now.
Should I move it to #general-archived or is this the correct channels for it?
when installing home assistant docker compose, should i change /PATH TO YOUR CONFIG to docker/homeassistant ?
you should change it to whatever directory you want for your config directory
slightly unrelated but does anyone know how i can view directories and what not on debian? i dont have the graphical desktop environment
You might want to switch to HA OS
whys that?
other installation methods assume that you have some familiarity with the Linux command line
i see a million people suggesting not to use supervisor, is that not the case?
22-10-02 00:23:39 ERROR (MainThread) [supervisor.os.manager] Home Assistant Operating System update failed with: signature verification failed: error:2E09A09E:CMS routines:CMS_SignerInfo_verify_content:verification failure
Following the Supervisor repair, its running now, and I was able to proceed with the update but get this error within a few seconds
@brisk willow okay i was enjoying learning how to do all this. just cant figure out how to view my directories which probably sounds really dumb
ls
thats what i found in my googling but it doesnt do anything. could it be because im accessing via ssh
It doesn't sound dumb. Everyone starts somewhere, but you'll want to get the basics of Linux down first: https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch01.en.html
What do you mean it doesn't do anything?
ls -a
nothing pops up. when i do ls -a it says . .. .bash_history .bash_logout .bashrc .profile
That's ... not nothing, that's something
thank you for the link. ive been googling and figuring out as much as i can. ive been keeping notes on everything i can for reference
ls showed nothing because there are only hidden files in the directory you're in which is your user's home directory
sorry, when i do ls nothing pops up. when i do ls - a is when i get that response
That's because the files/folders start with .
man ls and you'll see why
If I wanted to move my docker root folder for partitioning space reasons. Would it be better to do that with fstab or with dockers root folder config. I'm not sure if supervisor install is expecting it in a certain location.
If you're running Supervised don't modify any container
Also, don't run Supervised
Lol just saw that above before posting. Wish I read that a few weeks ago.
Take a backup, download it, flash HAOS, restore the backup
Is HAOS suitable for my linux box? I thought I couldn't do it because I'm running own my own tower, not a yellow/blue/pi...
ok thank you ill do some more reading
Has anyone encountered this?
@humble mirage I'll have to ponder that. Just went through the hassle of starting from scratch on debian so I could do this. I'm familiar with Linux....Is HA supervised not maintained?
It's a trap
In the unlikely case you can maintain it 100% in compliance with the requirements, assuming you even read them, then ... go for it
I'd say that most posters here who have problems with Supervised turn out to have ignored the requirements, or simply not kept current with changes in them, and are here because they've got a broken install they can't fix
If you're running Supervised so you can run other software, then you've set yourself up for failure
If Debian is already a hassle from scratch then I'll 3rd starting with HA OS.
Debian is fine, it's the Supervised install on top that's the pain
question for ya fellas, can i take the ssd with hassos on it out of my current nuc and just pop it into a different nuc? Would there any additional configuration needed or is it plug and play?
Or at least give it a shot if you can spare the box.
Debian + Docker is great
hassle maybe the wrong word. Just a time commitment to do the install. linux doesn't scare me, I have extensive experience managing boxes via ssh. I read the requirements and nothing really stood out as unexpected. Most of the pain was probably just porting my setup to addons and their configuration.
The more I read about addons the more I like them though and the less concern I have about the entire box being only HA. So I maybe I have no reason to avoid HAOS. Can I still configure my RAID with it?
Home assistant without addons and supervisor feels like a non-complete installation to me. Running haos in a vm on your hypervisor of choice is a pretty good solution
No, HAOS has no RAID support
If you need that, a VM would be the way to do it
Ah thats why i ruled it out. Mmm I don't really want to do a VM. So far I've been really happy with Supervised compared to managing all the containers myself.
I just want to move /var/lib/docker to into /home since it's a bigger partition.
I am having major issues with remote access for some reason. My internal IP is working over http, and the port is 100% open (google integration still works which accesses HASS through my external IP). But randomly it will just stop working for a few hours at a time and then come back. It just started happening this month and it is pretty annoying. Anything I can try to narrow down what is causing it?
And for whatever reason right now I am not able to access it from my desktop through the external IP, but my phone (which also accesses through the external IP) is able to access it. Doesn't make sense..
OK, so here is my hell-loop:
- Try to update HA OS 8.5 -> 9.0 update on a VM HA deployment
- Getting error - ERROR (MainThread) [supervisor.os.manager] Home Assistant Operating System update failed with: signature verification failed: error:2E09A09E:CMS routines:CMS_SignerInfo_verify_content:verification failure
- Found it in google it happened to people on HA OS 7.0 -> 7.1 updates and a restart would clear it.
- Restaring gets me back to point 1)
- If I proceed to restart the VM I get https://i.imgur.com/i96xm7h.png and when I restart the HA, since the supervisor is not running correctly it seems - I come back to 2).
HASSIO noob needs help!
Hi all!
I’m just getting into HASSIO as I’m using an older laptop for it. I’ve setup HASSIO in a VM with VirtualBox but it keeps crashing every hour or so….
I have a core i5 3337u, and 8Gb of ram. I gave my VM 2 cores and 2Gb of ram, as well as a bridged network connection.
Once I install HA. It works fine, great actually! I only install a few integrations (chromecast, tp link KASA, wyze, Ewelink, HomeKit, MyQ, and my router and printer that HA discovered on its own). I didn’t change much in the dashboard at all and only created one automation to try it out (turn on lights after sunset, wait 4hrs and then turn it off… nothing crazy)
At some point, within an hour or so, it just stops working… my VM is still running and there’s no error message, simple the IP address of the machine (same as when it works) but I can’t get the dashboard to load, or to use the devices added to HomeKit… I am also running a jellyfish server from the laptop but that’s all…
I did managed to find a log at some point (can’t remember where I found it) and there was something about the VM not having a heartbeat? Sorry if that sounds stupid, I’m just starting out but HA sounds amazing!! If only I could get it to work!
Do you guys have any clues? Any help would be much appreciated!
Do you put your laptop in standby / does it hibernate after said time span?
Ok so will I be able to run home assistant on an old desktop that I have? It's got a Core 2 duo from 2007 with 3 gigs of ram
Have a rpi4 with Homebridge Ui installed (non-docker) and scrypted (docker). Is it possible to install HA supervisor (as I want to run custom plugins) on the same system?
I just installed HAOS in a VM on my Mac using haos_ova-9.0.vdi (from a few weeks go), and though the 4357 page tells me the supervisor is connected, supported, and healthy, the 8123 page returns a Unable to connect error.
Anyone experienced this?
i'm struggling with upgrading core-2021.11.5 to core-2022.9.7.. i start the upgrade process, but nothing happens
@humble mirage said it was a very big jump, so is it possible to do some intermediate jumps?
@keen shale posted a code wall, it is moved here --> https://hastebin.com/guberowuze
Failing on Installation cuz im stuck at „preparing home assistant“
Pls read, happy for any help
No I made sure to turn this off.. looks like the Vm loses network connection… my VM running home bridge is setup the same way and works no problem…
Are you running core in docker or just core itself? Would be easy to do with docker not sure about plain core
Chrome says:
scripts.js:64 GET http://homeassistant:8123/manifest.json 404 (Not Found)
Found the same problem @ https://community.home-assistant.io/t/system-not-ready-with-startup-state-setup/345084
But im using a Fritzbox7590 and dont know a solution
Hi! I have setup with duckdns. How i can move my HA to another router for local testings in another location without internet connection?
i believe here is the problem, but how to make it properly to have ability to test it with another router?
You have configured an HTTPS certificate in Home Assistant. This means that your internal URL needs to be set to a domain covered by the certficate.
what?
Disable SSL
Its something more that disabling duckdns plugin correct? 😁 Appreciate if can give more directions, thanks
Thanks!
Remove/comment out the lines you have in configuration.yaml for ssl_
Then restart, and bingo... no SSL any more
Do remember to disable any port forwarding in the router though
😉
Do you have maybe some solution for me too?
Im still stuck on installation :/
What if you try with the LAN IP?
http://192.168.0.42:8123/ - using the actual LAN IP
(as explained in the HA install docs)
doenst change anything, works aswell as homeassistant:8123
Thank you!!!! Can i send you beer somehow? Worked as i wanted too
Sure! im very green but im very seriuos into 😉 So will be around def.
I think my problem is that HA cant reach Github to download the Docker Image
Everybody starts knowing nothing, and nobody knows everything
It doesn't download it from GitHub
However, check the logs, see what's really going on
Doesnt it? it says ghcr.io/home-assistant/raspberrypi3-64-homeassistant
@keen shale When using Discord's Reply feature it defaults to pinging the person you reply to, which can get frustrating for the target. Use Shift + click on the Reply option, or click @ ON to @ OFF to stop this - on the right side of the compose bar.
You have to change this every time (thank the Discord devs for that).
Which log? Supervisor Log just tells me the same error like this
That's not GitHub, that's Google's container registry, rather than Docker Hub
Soo it crashed and i did boot the pi.
Now im stuck again at "failed to start wait untile kernel time synchronized"
This is going on for ever and before i just could get rid of it with wiping the sd card and begin new
this sounds like your host has no network/internet connection
yes, but the PI has a uplink, shows up in the router, pingable. Its just the way „out“ and i dont know how to solve this
is it dns?
yes. My first thought was a problem with dns, tried changing it on the PI but didnt work.
Had the same problem yesterday, solved itself overnight but after the finished installation HA kept losing connection every 10s.
I have no more ideas
Does anyone have any ideas for me on this? It's really not usable in it's current state. Its constantly unavailable remote, but will eventually start working again randomly. I am on the latest release.
@random snow posted a code wall, it is moved here --> https://hastebin.com/ucolusenib
This worked for me! I was trying to figure out how to get to the system shell from the ha shell.

# date -s "YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm:ss"
# exit
ha > host reload
ha > supervisor logs
ha > host reboot
where
logincommand drops into anashshell- the date string is in UTC
date -ufrom another computer's terminal shows the parts, even if it's not the needed format. - exit the os shell
- reload the HA instance to pick up the new time
- verify fix by inspecting logs
- reboot to get supervisor and/or the server running
Hi Everyone. My HasOS seems to be restarting itself every 10-15 minutes, however I cannot find anything specific in the logs. could somebody help me try and diagnose this?
Always worth trying a different, more powerful, power supply / different USB cable. But it's one of those frustrating ones that makes it quite hard to figure out if that was it or not.
it seems like my installation is not able to resolve hostnames..
how can i debug that?
i'm running ha core
or.. whatever it's called.. HA-OS 8.5
So... HAOS not core lol
HAOS != Core
well, this is highly confusing 🙂
I mean, close... in astronomical units
hehe
but i still have the same problem - i'm not able to resolve hostnames
There's a ha command to set the DNS servers
It should be documented, or at least listed in the help of ha
it seems like the dns server is set correctly: locals: - dns://192.168.94.1
that is correct
connection timed out
but if i do: host google.com 192.168.94.1, then it works
"Container hassio_dns is not running"
Tried rebooting the whole system?
yes, several times
Not a restart of HA
yup, restarted the whole system.. even power cycled it
@junior vortex does ha su repair run?
testing now
ha dns status.. 404 client error.. no such container: hassio_dns
Excuse me: The docker installation is complete, the system has no add-ons, is the system version wrong?
How to add to the existing basis.
What?
If you mean integrations then those are part of the core of HA and available in every method
If you mean add-ons, those are "just" special Docker images for HAOS, almost all of them have a Docker image you can use instead
And the more control is nicer anyway
I have that exact same problem with the same root cause but I really don't want to remove portainer since I use it to manage the rest of my system. Anyone have an idea why portainer is now on the "unhealthy image list"?
Any container run outside of the add-ons ecosystem can cause that
I'd expect portainer was explicitly blacklisted because people use it to break their system
It should NOT be used to manage the system if you have the Supervisor, since that's what the supervisor is for. Decide if Portainer is preferred over Supervisor and run an installation which reflects that choice.
Thanks. my Pi4 is actually powered by a POE Hat, has been working fine for 2 years with no change. could that still be an issue?
Hi. Is there a way for me to have my Mi Smart LED Bulb Essential (White and Color) reacting to music or connecting to razer synapse. I saw that it is possible to make it work with Yeelight app and saw some links on forum of a moded apk for yeelight, but those links are dead. Pls help ❤️
Are you using Home Assistant already?
Im using Mi Home, im sry im new to this, i bought myself my first lightbulb yesterday and im so crazy about it, I wanna learn stuff
Would it be problem for you to show me some material, where to start and so on
Well, Mi Home isn't Home Assistant
Start by looking at the link in the channel topic
I'm so stupid, i realised just know
@zealous spoke When using Discord's Reply feature it defaults to pinging the person you reply to, which can get frustrating for the target. Use Shift + click on the Reply option, or click @ ON to @ OFF to stop this - on the right side of the compose bar.
You have to change this every time (thank the Discord devs for that).
Tnx alot 😄 let the fun begin
FYI, it does tie back to this change, which is why this just started happening: https://github.com/home-assistant/supervisor/pull/3889.
hi all. i really need some help 😦 my HasOS running on a Rpi4 with a POE Hat keeps rebooting and I dont know why. i dont think its a power issue as its runnning fine for almost 2 years. is there any way for me to find the issue from the logs?
Sounds like if you want to use portainer then you should use the docker install method and manually do add ons
trying to install bluetooth adapter rtl8761a on hassos done it ok on ubuntu 20.04 supervisor install but running up against rtl: download FW command failed (-100) - any ideas
Hi,
I run Homeassistant as docker container with "--network=host". However a new vlan interface of the host machine should be exposed to HA. How to do that?
Hi,
im still stuck on installation on a Raspi 3b+ with 64GB SD Card. Im stuck at "Preparing Home Assistant" because its trying to download docker image but fails all the time.
Chrome console says:
Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 (Not Found) and
GET http://homeassistant:8123/manifest.json 404 (Not Found)
Seems like the Pi cant connect to internet but after that it just shuts down and ends the installation
log says: https://hastebin.com/goqovojodi.yaml and https://hastebin.com/motilifaro.yaml
when running in docker is there a way to pass "--log-file" to hass so you can change the logging dir?
So i have HA running on a laptop running Debian 11.
Found out i have no supervisor (want to use adguardhome but nut no Systemd-Resolved running
I have manually started it but there are more issues seeing on my supervisor page.
Can i just reinstall HA supervised on this machine or do i need to reinstall everything??
i would recommend not running HA Supervised and either running...
- HA OS if you want the Supervisor features or
- HA Container if you don't care about the Supervisor features
Can i install HAOS on a X86 laptop?
Supervised is a trap, and a ticking time bomb
Why?
Thanks, unfortunately my old laptop doesn't support UEFI boot mode

Because following that 100% correctly is hard
Keeping it 100% up to date with that is also hard
Failing to do that, deliberately or accidentally, means that at some point without warning your host will stop working
ugh cant find a solution to change the damned log file location in docker, want to redirect it to /var/log/homeassistant
I periodically get "unhealthy" but restarting the machine (not just HA) fixes it
And if you're running unsupported containers whilst running a supervised install (HAOS or supervised) then you risk breaking your system
Especially something like portainer
Hey all i m having trouble with my home assistant install … i m using the latest vmdk (9) on esxi ( i m used to install HA on it ) ans it s boot looping ( no config imported yet vanilla install)
Ide controller efi bios 1000e networkcard 2 vcpu 2gb ram …
Hi Tyto, did you get an answer to this?
Hi all!
I'm having trouble updating my HA OS and core to the latest version. when on operating system update, i get this message:
'OSManager.update' blocked from execution, no supervisor internet connectio
does anyone have a fix? the message is similar trying to update core too.
Hey @tranquil mortar . Yes, got it sorted in the end by doing a fresh install and then restoring back up. I can't remember what the actual issue wish - not sure I actually found out although if you search my name, there may be some info from then, but main focus on was getting it working again. I had tried to reinstall but hadn't got it working, but will be bit of help, second time round it worked and no issues since with everything running fine.
Think I just followed this guide to reinstall https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/odroid
Its a while a go, but will try and support you if I can. Its pretty straightforward though and sure there's loads of folk on here that understand it better than me.
Good luck
Clean install HAOS on RPi4. Trying to upload backup (several) i get Upload failed 400 bad request. Checked logs - no new issues. Need help to resolve this.
If you have many to move you might try using smb/samba addon instead
Simply tring to install 1 single to recover system
is the backup < 1GB?
files are about 14,xxx KB
samba is still the way to go if you have issues
ok i will try that
that will at least rule out the browser file transfer "magic"
i installed samba and copied files to backup folder. Backup does now show these files.
ok the next step would be a successful restore, heh
i created backup from system that one shows as expected
how do i do a successful restore when i cannot see the file to restore
i can see the backup i transferred in samba
did you reload the backup page? three dots in the upper right corner
if they don't appear after a reload, check the supervisor logs to see if there's an error showing in regard to the existing backups
you need advanced mode enabled for your user to show the su logs option on the logs page
tried ... still not showing, nothing in log. Trying reboot. Updated user to advanced. tried ... again still cannot see file uploaded in samba
only files i create from new backup show
checked logs i get:
failed to call / store -
/store error code 500
you switched to supervisor logs in the upper right corner?
with advanced mode there's a dropdown
with a lot of choices
says invalid header
says found backup files in supervisor
cant read backup tar file ... invalid header
are you able to open the .tar file and browse it?
the problem one
locally on your pc, that is
file opens as expected with 7zip
And this is 14 mb in size?
ok i found problem. copied backup tar files to memory stick was corrupt. tried coping to new memory stick and transferred file. Works now. Really appreciate your help with this
i learned alot for future troubleshooting. thanks
installing ha on rpi3 following the instructions from the website but it wont boot.
if i flash raspbian to the card the green light flashes and pi boots but with ha no boot and no green light
tried 3 diff sd-cards
Did you flash the Pi3 image, or the (default) Pi4 image?
any of the incorrect images for the incorrect pi model would result in a blank screen if you've got a monitor attached
oops 😇
was conviced pi image would run no matter if 3 or 4
Anyone can Help ?
AttributeError: module 'lib' has no attribute 'X509_V_FLAG_CB_ISSUER_CHECK' on a raspberry pi with Debian 11 bullseye and python 3.9, after i upgraded to 2022.10.0. any ideas? https://privatebin.net/?40ff3630fc9d82d3#J4nDJt7yqMaTkdikKLXy5uKFGa83gQbQY4eXdzJKZ3qH
i think pyOpenSSL needs to be upgraded to >22: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1428181/module-lib-has-no-attribute-x509-v-flag-cb-issuer-check
Hi installation ppl!
Here having (again) problems with the RTC time attached to my hardware (blue edition, such a forgotten edition...) my problem is that for some reason the time is not kept (cell battery is brand new) so my questions are: could I rely completly on ntp? how to set it up? BIG THANKS in advance!!
(I'm so frustrated and so unhappy with the blue edition brick...)
If you're using HAOS on that Blue, then it already has NTP
then my HAOS is not sync with NTP... or at least the datetime is from 2 days ago...
when I type date I get "Mon Oct 3 13:14:36 UTC 2022"
ntp in a normal OS should keep in sync just fine with no local battery on the rtc clock. I'm assuming haos should do the same
Though there's no ntp process
i cherry-picked https://github.com/home-assistant/core/pull/79066 and now home-assistant starts.
Ah true :0
Can't get out of the ha interface thingy on the console
will see if there's a time-status command. sec
is there a firewall or block that would prevent your haos from reaching internet time? Seems it's timesyncd btw, not ntpd
Hi, didnt manage to setup HA directly on my Pi 3b+ so i tried with Docker and Portainer.
It starts and keeps crashing a few seconds after:
Log: https://hastebin.com/oweyedarex.less
Error: SyntaxError: (unicode error) 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xe6 in position 1: invalid continuation byte
Pls help!
exactly, no ntp process, service and anything... so, i'm new here... not sure how HA deals with this...
I cannot install packages even being in a console environment (bash like) with same linux like folder tree... so ntp cannot be installed manually... and probably it shoudn't... but then, if date and time are wrong, how can I set them up? how is this set up manually to use ntp and sync again the date and time?
if I type host info I see some suspicious output lines such as:
-boot_timestamp: null
-dt_utc: null
-startup_time: null
-timezone: null
-use_ntp: null
What docker compose or docker command did you use
is this the right subtopic to ask a question on network settings and errors ?
I can't access homeassistant at it's ip
I can ping it which is fine, but can't access it
What type of install do you have? And presume you're doing IP:8123?
HAOS, yes I am using 192.168.1.213:8123
I can ping it without any issue
What does HAOS say when connected to a display?
but on webpage it says connection refused
Also presume you haven't changed anything in the config then?
Not tried to do SSL or change ports?
running it on RPI4, will try to connect to display
no
only installed EQMX 3 days ago
Installed it as an add on I presume?
But shouldn't be the issue. Connecting to a display will help
Also you don't need to reply to every single message with a ping reply too
Unable to set static IP using GUI or command line.
Yes I Followed mostlychris video for EQMX
I will connect with a display in few mins /hours
Make sure https://IP:8123
Any reason you're not setting a DHCP reservation instead?
Because I need the IP to be outside the range of the DHCP issued IP addresses. Hope that makes sense
You can set a DHCP reservation outside of the DHCP pool
In fact, you should do that anyway
I tried but it didn’t work. When it rebooted, the home assistant still grabbed the old DHCP issued IP. Why should I do that anyway instead of static ip ? Please help me understand
It is already saved in browser
It's likely because the lease hasn't expired. You can either wait for it to expire and be renewed (with the new IP address) or, depending on the host OS (not sure if it's possible with HA OS if that's what you're using), manually release and renew.
As far as the static IP address question, centralized management for one. Potential IP address conflicts can result too, although that's probably less of an issue if the static IP address is outside of the DHCP pool
|| why not ||
connected display but it is blank
Restarted PI, booting
A start job is running for Wait Until kernal Time Synchronized failed
That to me looks like a storage medium failure. microSD card failure I presume?
@latent thistle yup
tried changing the USB to SATA adapter didn't work. reinstalled HAOS on SSD
I did set manually the time with the date -s command, but every time I have a power down at home the time does not resync, so ntp isn't working...
if somebody could tell me how to set npt up manually... or how to check the initial log messages, to make sure the ntp service is up and running or what kind of error it throws
tried to restore backup from 3/10/2022 connection refused eventhough some add-ons are working
never mind a wait for few mins longer saved the day
Did someone see this before?
Just restored from first backup and the default username password is not working. Any ideas?
unless something has changed recently, there is no default username/password for HA
if you've forgotten your username/password, then: https://www.home-assistant.io/docs/locked_out/
Hi! I am reinstalling on a raspi after running for years migrating from hardware to hardware with backups.
The whole onboarding was a new experience 😄 my existing system was really old.
However, I'm very confused now. I cannot access my instance via SSL. But in a test-install yesterday it worked and I didn't have to do anything in particular. What can prevent HA to listen on port 443? It's just not responding there. But I can reach it ok on HTTP 8123
So I was able to guess the password, but now I am on version 2021 and can't update/turning on advanced mode doesn't provide me the option to turn on terminal and ssh so I can't use the CLI. Any suggestions?
Do you have that #add-ons-archived installed?
Doesn't show up. I turn on advanced mode and I am back to 2021 version so I click on supervisor and it just spins.
when you restore, you don't need to restore the old HA version. That can be deselected
I restored from the original backup which happen to be a v2021 backup. I was having tons of issues and am attmempting to not move my Blue as it is cable managed into a rack so yeah
This seems to be a problem all over the forums. When you restore from backup, Supervisor doesn't get restored to an old version and so it doesn't work with the old HassOS version.
This also means I can't update the OS. I think I am going to have to pull the Blue and flash the OS which honestly is a PIA.
The OS is separate from your HA configuration
Did you clear out your config directory and restart HA to start fresh?
and then restore?
And why such an old backup?
I have tried to clear the config and reboot to start fresh but it always pulls the broken config.
you cleared all hidden directories?
I wanted to start fresh since so much had changed and my entire networking structure changed in the new house so I was just trying to restart fresh, but that doesn't seem to be an option
I did am rm -rf config
if you really started fresh you would have went through onboarding again
you clear the contents of the directory
Onboarding is a pain in the ass with the blue since you can't just pull the memory. You have to pull the whole thing.
no, onboarding as in "create a user", choose your location, etc
there's no physical access needed for that
How would I do that without flashing the OS?
clear the config directory
I did that and it didn't bring up the onboarding.
then you didn't do it
nope
This isn't my first day on linux man.
whatever you did failed
Not according to the terminal window I had.\
what was the path
rm -rf ~/config
That is where all the config files, all the backup files (Which I also deleted) were stored
mnt/data/supervisor/homeassistant if you were directly connected
that's config
/mnt/data/supervisor/backup is where the backups are
Either way I don't have access to terminal or SSH anymore and supervisor is broken and doesn't load.
Supervisor just spins. It is all over the forums with other having the same issue and no responses. This goes back for at least a year
If I do get an error it says "Error fetching add-on info: cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'method')
if you can't connect directly because of the "don't move or touch it" rule, then things are going to be stuck, yeah
It is in another room with the server rack not my office. I can move it, but it is going to be about a 30 minute process to move it
That should be built into the OS. An option to wipe the config and start over.
you had so much focus on the OS, when I think you just needed to properly clear the config directory. I can open the shared directory over samba right now and empty it, then reboot from the UI and I would be back at the beginning and asked to create a user
A button to 'factory reset' HA would be fraught with peril
There's one on the yellow
Just a tiny bit
But it wipes and then downloads the OS i believe
Why? Put it in the server controls and make it password required.
It's okay with physical access, I think
All support @ to you 🙂
Sure. Put it in the OS. lol
The support would be, you pressed the option, read the warnings, and typed in your password. Start over.
We'd have people in here weekly, if not more often, who'd not really understood and lost all their "backups"
You wouldn't have to clear the backups.
You're welcome to file a What the Heck? for that
how do you wipe the OS without clearing backups
You don't have to clear the entire OS. It just dumps fresh config files and starts on-boarding again. Then you backups will be read and have a note that says "Fresh installation to XX version" with your previous backups below that.
The backup part could be interesting, but dumping fresh config files and emptying the config directory and restarting is the same thing
Hey guys, im trying to install HASS OS on my Pi4 8GB, but the installation is constantly failing. I get: [supervisor.homeassistant.core] Error on Home Assistant installation. Retry in 30sec
and:
[supervisor.docker.interface] Can't install ghcr.io/home-assistant/raspberrypi4-64-homeassistant:2022.10.0: 500 Server Error for http+docker://localhost/v1.41/images/create?tag=2022.10.0&fromImage=ghcr.io%2Fhome-assistant%2Fraspberrypi4-64-homeassistant&platform=linux%2Farm64: Internal Server Error ("Get "https://ghcr.io/v2/": net/http: request canceled while waiting for connection (Client.Timeout exceeded while awaiting headers)")
Would love some help. Note that im installing the 64bit version, haven't tried with the 32bit
and also:
'ResolutionFixup.run_autofix' blocked from execution, system is not healthy
Sounds like Network or DNS issue
What should i look for/change to?
I've had a quick glance att the network settings but i cant really find anything wrong. Im a HASS beginner. Only tried it for a couple of weeks running in a VM on my W11 pc
Im trying to install HA on a NUC over an existing ubuntu install. And it now states "waiting for home assistant CLI to be ready" WARN HA CLI not starting, jump into emergency console.
What's going on here?
are u able to open this website on your pi in browser?
maybe you run out of DHCP leases. Seen that already on some networks.
Otherwise to debug, try plugging in a sdcard with Raspberry Pi OS and try an apt-get update
The error you sent with is describing the issue rather fine imo request canceled while waiting for connection
hmm, ill try changing the DNS at first and see if that works
Hey so I am trying to restore ha from the Cli because the web interface isn’t working I wrote the command ha backups restore ‘slug’ then after a few minutes it says command completed successfully but i am still on the new version and nothing seems to have changed why is that?
Hey! I installed home assistant natively in an old macbook. Is there a way to turn off the display? Even if I close it, the computer will remain on (which is perfect), but the display will never turn off. Even the optical audio output is always on (a red light coming out of the headphone jack)
I just updated to HA OS 9.1, which I run in a KVM running on Debian 11, and the network failed to come up. From the console, it looks like the ethernet device changed, for some reason, from enp0s3 to ens3, and there was no longer an active network interface. I added another interface using nmcli con edit, assigned the same static IP and gateway that I had before, and it's back up and running. Now my connections look like this:
I rebooted and it came up fine, but I wonder what might have happened there. I've gone through other HA OS updates and rebooted the host machine many times without incident
The only changes since 9.0 that look interesting are these:
https://github.com/home-assistant/operating-system/pull/2138
https://github.com/home-assistant/operating-system/pull/2171
the device naming is based on this, apparently: https://askubuntu.com/a/704121
hello, I would like to know if using a raspberry pi 4b, 4gb with just an sd card and ventilation is enough to run home assistant? in particular i'd like to know if the sd card is good enough as the hdd because it seems to me that often people use an external ssd on their raspberry for home assistant but i don't have a spare ssd
it'll run fine on a rpi4. as your setup gets bigger with time you will notice when it gets too slow for you soon enough.
your sd card will die, as will any other medium with time. it's just way more likely for a sd card to die than a ssd. so either buy a external ssd or be prepared for when your sd card dies (make backups either way)
ok thanks for your answer
Important to note make external backups. Don't hope for data recovery
yes i store them on my cloud already, thanks for pointing it out
Hello - I am trying to migrate an installation and restore a backup.
All instructions I can find for this tell me to upload the backup on the Onboarding Screen of the new system, clicking on a 'Alternatively, restore from a backup' link, rather than creating a new setup.
However, on my new install (Docker), no such link exists. Has this been removed? If so, what is the method for restoring backups?
Thanks!
Restoring backups is only possible on HAOS
If you've gone for a native Docker install you can restore the Home Assistant configuration manually, by extracting that archive from the backup (which ISTR is a zip file)
Ahha ok. Thanks.
Tried overwriting the config with the contents of the zip file both in the folder specified in the docker config, and in the /config directory in the container. Nether worked unfortunately and it just kept asking me to reconfigure. Ended up giving up, and starting from scratch, but I was able to move the zha config over using the migration internal to that, which is the main thing.
It's not a huge thing, but I think the 'backup' section should be marked with a 'here be dragons' label in the config. I'd expect to be able to use a backup file generated there to restore fairly easily, in any install - especially as they can be created in any install.
I have just received my ha yellow but it does not power on
There is no lights on at all, please can someone help
#yellow-archived may be able to
What subnet does haos use for docker?
A quick Google suggests maybe 172.30.32.0/23
Hi All, i'm using RPi 3B and am transitioning from SD to SSD. I've enable USB boot with program_usb_boot_mode=1 in the config.txt (changed on the SDcard, booted it once, then swapped to SSD). On SSD i have BalenaEtched the latest 64bit version for PI3 as instructed on https://www.home-assistant.io/installation/raspberrypi/. After power-on with SSD i got Ping-replies (wired network) for around 10minutes, after that it is silent now for about another 10 minutes. What should i expect in first boot ? Green LED has not turned on since poweron. [Update] I've rebooted with both SD and SSD(USB) plugged. Now it seems to be booting from SSD. (so appearantly it chooses USB/SSD over SDcard).
hi.. can any1 tell me where to find the ui-lovelace.yaml? I have tried everything i can think of to find it... i can find it referenced in other yaml files.. but not as an actual file i can edit via Studio Code Server...
