anyone know of any wifi/zigbee PIR sensors that allow me to disable that annoying red LED that flashes during detection?
@spark mango can you show us a screenshot of the baud/etc settings?
discord doesnt allow me to send files

Running HA on a pi4. Anyone know of any compatible USB dongles that will allow me to send text messages from HA ideally using Node Red
(In UK)
I am now here. I have supported the HA amber funding. But it ships out NOV, 2022. Which other alternative hardware can I start learning Automation with?
Any computer from the last 20 years can run ha (roughly)
Any computer from the last 10 years can run it in a vm
Ish
Exclude atoms from that
hey, is anyone aware of a cheap wifi/zigbee switch with power monitoring (like sonoff pow or bw-shp6) but in a smaller form factor (like sonoff mini or aqara t1)?
Lots of options at Shelly @sleek path
I want to try Rasperi Pi, but how can i get it support zigbee?
A rpi3b+ or newer will run ha fine for most people
But you still need a ZigBee coordinator
It can be both
There a loads of hubs and sticks
See the pinned topics at #zigbee-archived
Any TI stick in the 26xx series is a good choice, with zigbee2mqtt
ok
hey guys. I am very new to home assistant. I wanted to get a smart lock and speed of lock/unlock is a priority. I was looking at the August smart lock pro 3 as it has zwave integration (heard zwave makes lock/unlock much quicker) and I don't have to replace my existing deadbolt (don't want to have to replace keys for family). Was wondering if anyone had experience with this lock and if the speed was fast with the zwave integration. I currently have the august gen 3 non pro lock and its pretty slow with HA cloud integration at 3-6 seconds.
send em back and replace with the aqara ones from ali express, thats what i did 😛
I bought a conbee right now :)
I have the conbee 2 tbh, limited experiance with others, but I have a door sensor connected from my shed to it and its far away
Holy URL of Antioch
Sorry :D
no no it was a joke thats why I said I use the conbee 2 too 😛
Ok. Good that I ask again lol
@dry fern I'm in the US, but I use a Huawei E3531 GSM modem with sms2mqtt, so if that modem works in the UK then you could use that. Requires a SIM card of course
I set mine up last week. Did you use the ZNP protocol option? Is the Sonoff stick hooked up directly to your device, or are you using a USB extension cord?
It's directly plugged into an Intel nuc without extension. And yes the znp protocol
Strange. Idk anything about Nuc's, but it was as simple as that for my RPi 3B+. There are no buttons on the actual USB stick (the reset button is on the chip itself).
I will say that all of my Aqara switches show themselves as connected but don't work for more than a day using this hub. Sigh.
I'm considering switching from ZHA to z2m...
It's just so bizarre, because my Aqara temp/hum and contact sensors are reporting just fine. The leak detectors seem to say they're unavailable (I upped the ZHA unavailable time to 24 hours), and the switches show up in my ZHA mesh visualization, but don't do a damned thing when I click them (even though all my automations are set up just fine).
I would give it a shot with a USB extension cable.
Ok. Need to buy one :/. Thx
If I buy an Aqara zigbee hub, is there an integration for it in HA? I don't want to have to use Homekit automations for my switches... too limited.
Good to know, thanks. Any recs on signal repeaters? My Tradfri ones don't seem to be working very well. Considering the Peanut plugs or the Tradfri outlet mains.
I don't use apple products nor buttons so I can't comment on homekit
Tradfri bulbs and outlets are great
I have tons
I legit think my main issue is interference. I have 25+ wifi bulbs (Wiz) and 10+ wifi (Kasa) smart plugs so that's a lottttt.
Oh nice. I'll try their outlets next. Getting sick of the Kasa API bs.
I easily have 100 WiFi devices in my home at any given time
Plus my 120+ ZigBee devices
My inspo ❤️
Did you manually set your Zigbee channel, or just let it do its thing? (I think mine defaulted on channel 15)
I'm at 56 wifi devices atm. And 22 Zigbee devices.
I've read that changing the channel for ZHA requires resetting the device completely, and setting up all of the Zigbee devices again. I'm not super interested in that. Although I just did a network scan and it looks like none of my neighbors are using channel 15.
Changing frequency requires repair for all coordinators
And software or hubs
Took me 45 minutes to repair 60 ZigBee devices last I did it
Not for the Philips Hue hub
I'm assuming that's what it does in the background though
I wish I could afford Hue. Rock solid devices.
tbh, with my mesh setup (netgear) I think its something with the ikea repeaters, they dont really work well, I have one right near my back garden door, but my shed door/temp sensor which is 10 meters from that repeater joined directly coordinator which is in a cupboard 25 meters away from it lol
Lmao. That's like my front door sensor. It reaches all the way across my place to the coordinator, versus the 3 signal repeaters on the way there.
zigbee can be strange at times, but it is quite funny how far you can go, just adding a bulb after a bulb after a bulb, I mean there are a few cities out that whole lighting is zigbee (streetlights etc)
that front door sensor isn't a aqara is it 😛
my best repeater is probably my in wall switch lol (that controls power to my wall mounted tablet) its got 7 things connected to it.
Yupppp. All my Zigbee devices are Aqara, for better or worse.
my shed one is too, upper windows and doors, and just lower door sensors and window sensors except one are
So I should send you my old hub so you can break it ?
there is always a use for hue hubs (gaming lights on pc monitor for one)
🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢
(i dont mean just to RGB bud, I mean immersion)
🤢
or even immersion for watch videos on a pc monitor or music videos
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYagtv4LVRM ignore the music, something I done for intel last year that now sits under my desk.
my only plus out of covid tbh as the shows got canceled so I got to keep it
But I like you

Loool
Will conbee2 range cover a 3000 sqft house?
if its one giant room it might
Any recommendation on routers?
my only input is that there are devices that are useful beyond just being a router such as also being a smart plug
Is there any zigbee keypads that you can buy ?
there are a bunch of different shells that they put around this https://centralite.com/products/security-keypad
Hey guys, I was wondering, I have one of those bed shakers (https://www.sonicalert.com/SS12VB-Shakers)
Any idea if it'd be possible to connect it to an Ardunio board (for example) and control it using HA?
I also own the alarm clock which it connects to, but I couldn't find any electronic interfaces I'd be able to control on it
looking for a recommendation for a weatherproof outdoor motion sensor that works with zigbee2mqtt. Can anyone recommend me something? I want to put it in my driveway to switch light on when I park
preferably one that is more directional rather than wide angle
mine all have a few-second delay
So it’s not like 1 second or immediate
a few-second delay
not immediate
plus, it's a mechanical thing, not like turning on a light
Ahh I see cause I was using the august lock gen 3 via Wi-Fi on home assistant and it took a good 3-6 seconds for the lock to start turning
Was hoping Zwave would be an improvement
I've never felt like speedy locks were a priority, but they do take some time to start moving and then to stop moving
Oh I don’t mind the actual movement. It’s more so the speed it takes to start the movement. I’m trying to build a system that unlocks a door with an nfc tag so I don’t want the person waiting a bit for the door to unlock
Does anybody here use Kasa smart plugs in HA?
Anyone use a gen4 august lock and if so how is the speed with home assistant
should I see [zwave_js_notification] as an option under active listeners in developer tools --> events ?
(i have the zwave-js add-on installed)
I have a Kasa outdoor plug, several indoor plugs, and a few switches.
anyone know why after a fresh install, HA cant see my WeMo switch?
Nice. I have a bunch of indoor plugs, and was wondering if you knew of a way to disable the bright status light on the devices?
anyone in australia have a recommendation for a portable aircon I can interface with? non-cloud preferred
I can probably just do IR integration, but bleh
Hi guys, I don't know if this is the right place to ask, if not, please redirect me to where I need to be, as I cannot really find a suitable answer.
For our new house, which still has to be built, I want to use Home Assistant as the brains of the house. I want almost everything to be automated, think of blinds/lights/HVAC/audio/video/presence/alarm.
I've been using Home Assistant for years and I'm a big fan, especially lately, as it keeps on growing.
However, what I'm missing, is how to integrate this into your house using wired hardware. Most users seem to use pluggables and wireless hardware, which I don't want to use.
What is the way to go? Which hardware could you suggest? Where can I find more information?
It is important to me that the house is still sellable, as I don't want to rip everything out whenever we need or want to sell it.
Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks guys
Netherlands
What do you mean by what type?
I would like to have a central space where everything will be connected. So I was thinking of either a bus system or a more conventual system, but wired in a STAR, so every switch wired to the central location and every lamp (socket) to this location. But to what can this be connected?
rs485 is great as it is single pair and a bus
with which hardware can this be combined? So switches etc.
Unfortunately I do not. Most of my plugs are behind furniture so it's never bothered me. You could always go low tech and put a piece of tape over the status light.
Anyone control an APC Rack PDU via Home Assistant?
If it has SNMP it should not be magic
any list of cloud free devices for smart home integration out there ; like a guide or user database of some sort
or is the general answer 1. RTSP 2. Zigbee 3. Z-Wave
RTSP or ONVIF for cameras
For everything else Zigbee and Z-Wave are the only sure bet
Very new to home automation but why is Zwave considered better than Wi-Fi for home products
Because WiFi often means works with some random cloud service where Zigbee and Z-Wave are 100% local
Also WiFi devices are usually battery hungry, and adding a few hundred of them will cause you to run out of IP space on a typical home network 😄
aeotec vs zooz vs sonoff ? for something completely cloud free ?
I'm looking into sensors
Gotcha ty. I was gonna buy an august gen 4 lock but got gen 3 pro instead for zwave
@steep basin When using Discord's Reply feature it defaults to pinging the person you reply to, which can get frustrating for the target. Use Shift + click on the Reply option, or click @ ON to @ OFF to stop this - on the right side of the compose bar.
You have to change this every time (thank the Discord devs for that).
Aeon 6 in 1 looks promising
Basically, pick Z-Wave or Zigbee, and then go from there
#zigbee-archived is cheaper, but more of a wild west. #zwave-archived is more expensive, but more likely to "just work" well
I wanted Schlage but not fond of having to change my keys. Dt I can rekey Schlage to kwisset
ok dumb question actually before I get sensors... I have Home_assistant on a synology NAS in docker... so I need to get a dongle that have z wave, zigbee, and RF correct ? and that essentially is the substitute for this Hubitat thing correct?
Well, three "dongles" - one for each
roger ; I see this website has one that has both zigbee and z wave in 1 dongle ; should i avoid that
Buy something CC2652 based. This list is a good one, both Tube and Electrolama have been proven to have excellent customer service. The current generation of EZSP sticks (see here for some) are also a good choice for ZHA.
Anything CC2530 or CC2531 based should be avoided - they're old, slow, and only suitable for a dozen or so devices. The Sonoff ZBbridge isn't advised since it uses WiFi (built in interference), and the HUSBZB-1 uses an older chipset so should be avoided.
people might have had finnicky issues with them?
ok ; question ... how did you get this HassBot thing to link me to this cool list ; how can I browse this HassBots repo of recommendations?
ty man
"SMARTLIGHT CC2652P Zigbee USB dongle" seems to be the only thing I can find available ; 👍 to go ahead purchase and check off 1 thing
?
Sure, just ensure you know how to flash it
Evening all, quick query I'm hoping someone can help, I'd like to build a network of sensors at work for measuring water temperatures. We have full site WiFi, so happy to use that, but they need to run on on batteries, and ideally last 6-12 months. I want to attach them to the pipework, so although the case needs to be semi-waterproof, they will not be submerged. Mqtt would be preferable, Any suggestions.
which pi 4 would you recommend? 2, 4 or 8GB Ram? at the moment I have only about 15 Wled and Tuya instances connected to HA
Tinkerer ; any list like that available for z-wave .
See the #zwave-archived channel - you want an Aeotec 700 series stick ideally
ty
zigbee I would choose the conbee 2 out of the 4 I tried it had the better range
and how exactly did you test the range 😄
personally i'd recommend an CC2652-based adapter with an external antenna
OK . purchased : Aeotec ZWA010-A ZStick 7 ZWave Plus Gen7
so now that I have this Zigbee stick on order, and this Aeotec Z-Wave stick...
I have a raspberry pi 3b+ ;
now I can get into sensors etc right ?
I don't need this RF adapter or anything
How does Lutron Caseta integrate offline if it isn't zwave or zigbee?
WiFi or wired things can offer local control too
It's just up to the manufacturer to actually implement something like that
The zigbee street light at alleyway behind garden would not connect to others but did to conbee
What other adapters did you try?
The usual suspects I can provide list and specs when I am at pc as that has details, but I was just testing how they came plugged into a extension cable and all placed in same spot.
2 of them did have a aerial, but did not try via a extended aerial though as I wanted the test to be fair and test exactly how they came
Has anyone here got the lock/unlock feature working for a Schalge deadbolt? i can add my device fine (securely - i think) but does nothing when I hit lock/unlock ... struggling through various search results to find something helpful ...
Isn't using an always plunged in android tablet for home dashboard basically a fire hazard provided that it has a battery inside?
Not really. If the battery did become a spicy pillow you'd likely know since the body would probably start to separate from the display
what do you think about TP-Link Kasa wifi device ?
It's alright, but there are better options
especially looking for local wifi and dimmer
ZigBee > wifi
I have tplink kasa and I am trying to switch to local control stuff so zigbee and zwave is what I'm looking at
so perhap i should not even invest in wifi
every extra wifi device you have decreases network performance so yeah unless you don't care about your 2.4 GHz network
my thought was since we are doing a major home remodel it mean I will change them all. Was thinking to then slowly change them to zwave/zigbee later
cuz zigbee then do be 2-3 time more expensive
but... i might reconsider this then
everone didnt like the wifi options
Tradfri and Xiaomi
ty
Both far below 20$
wow good
let me check this out then
amazon does not have a lot of Tradfri and xiaomi
yeah both of those are hard to come by in the US
And Xiaomi are at AliExpress
ikeas show no stock of any zigbee stuff anywhere near me
Lol wtf
bay area
Our shelves are full
my guess is a semiconductor shortage based issue but not sure (or maybe there is just insatiable demand here)
hahaha
or maybe the ikea website is lying but as those would be the only reason to go so I'm not going to check
and the fact that people are selling the stuff on amazon for more than list price doesn't give me confidence I'll find anything there
Lol wtf
is this a good room for asking about light bulbs?
I have several Leviton Z-Wave switches that come up as "Scene Capable..." when added to HA. Does anyone know how to create scenes with them?
I have 3 Sylvania Zigbee bulbs outside and 2 of them are awesome. But my front porch one is flakey even though I have a repeater near by it and according to the map it has several good green lines going to it. But I have to at least once a day reset the bulb in order to get it back online and functioning. So I think that I'm going to have to get 3 new bulbs to go outside. Why 3? All 3 must have the same colors and look uniform I can't just put some random brand out there. I have some of the cheap zigbee bulbs but their colors aren't really what the Sylvanias are. The Sylvanias are pretty vibrant and when I tell it for example right now for Haloween to be Orange they are orange. So I think that as much as I usually fight off WiFi devices I'm considering that as I'm not sure if its the Sylvania antenna just sucks or if its due to the construction of my house just causing issues with the bulb getting out there
so I"m curious what devices you guys/gals recommend that have good color
@glossy prism how in the fuck did you pry the pcb out of the bulb housing
are you magic?
lose a finger?
yes
😱
RIP in peace
but im looking at it like, your jig probably made it so much easier
yeah, quite handy
and im lamenting trying to solder to these tiny ass pins
i do enjoy soldering, but sometimes i just want to use the jig and be done with it
ah
not a needle
yeah, that'll make it tough
fuck
you in the US?
i'm almost positive i have a spare jig i can mail you
so what do the jigs look like even?
i found my spare one. DM me your addy if you want it and trust a random internet person 😄
@glossy prism i wouldnt care, but honestly i need an excuse to finally order pogo pins
also to use my printer which has sat for like 4 months doing nothing
well, there ya go 😄
part of me does wish i could do it tonight but oh well
@glossy prism what size pogo's should i be looking at?
how are they sized? i got these jigs from a friend
i can measure the diameter with my calipers
yep, that matches mine
I'm looking for a submersible temperature probe
Could be zigbee, or connected to an esp8266/32
I want to be able to read the temperature of the water in my K40 laser cutter reservoir, and prevent it from being powered on if the water temp is outside of the accepted range
any recommendations?
yeah
Like at the supermarket?
or in a serial killers basement
Walk in fridge rooms used to be popular here in the 80s
But haven't seen a freezer one before
Not yet, but it was the consensus when I ordered six of them
And they can be connected in a bus, so only need one data pin
Which is nice
Because they are addressable
nice
ok done, grabbed a couple
i'm very keen for this K40 to not burn my house down
Hi guys, does anyone know an EU low profile USB charger? My dad and I are going to make an extra wall to hide some wiring. As that wall sits in front of a wall socket I'm searching for a charger that doesn't take a lot of space. Do you have any suggestions?
@smoky moth something like this https://www.tem-si.com/produkt-usb-polnilnik-em66-em67/ maybe?
Hey Guys the Aeotec 700 series z wave controller is out of stock or can't find it anywhere ; what would be the next closest recommended substitute ?
See #zwave-archived and tell people where in the world you are

Hiho, are there overview pages for which machines people use to run Home Assistant on?
I'm currently running it in a Docker container on Raspberry Pi 2. It freezes / restarts / disconnects too often and sometimes is pretty slow. For this reason I'm now considering to buy a better machine. However, I'm uncertain what I need.
I'm also uncertain if I might want to run other stuff on this machine (e.g. a media server?)
I have a FireTV stick which I only use to view Netflix / YouTube on my old TV. However, it sometimes is super slow. Could I connect the mini pc with the TV and get a better user experience? What other stuff do you have on the device that runs home assistant?
I have a Conbee II Stick (Zigbee) which I would continue to use.
Is wake on LAN (WoL) a feature that could come in handy, e.g. if one is remote and it froze? (I've never used WoL)
Which CPU requirements does Home Assistant have? I've seen Intel Pentium / Atom / Celeron / i3 / i5 - and a couple of different ones within the mini PCs.
Any intel machine from the last 15 years will be an upgrade over that
Except atom cpus
But there are a ton of minicomputers on AliExpress that are fanless and great, but if you want room to grow any hpe/dell server from g7/X10 and upwards is a good bet
Does there exist a smart wall outlet with a line level switch input? ZigBee or Z Wave preferred but not strictly necessary.
I ran my HA in a VM on my Xeon workhorse for years. Total overkill. I’ve ended up shifting to a Pi 4 to save power.
Plus I have it powered from a POE injector so I can reboot it remotely if it freezes - which it hasn’t lately
Haha it’s only a 6RU rack thank you very much
No, mine is 42u 🏓
🦥
I still have my Xeon box, but it’s just a file bucket these days
Maybe
But if one Pi fails I don’t lose everything
My raid controller died suddenly a few years back, I lost 24TB of stuff
I lose nothing if any system fails there, most of it is test and lab equipment, and everything I care about is on two different systems plus two different cloud providers
USA?
A failed raid controller is not lost data, raid metadata is stored on disks, just replace the raid controller
And no, Norway
Aus here. And semi-rural Aus at that. Our internet blows. My upstream bandwidth is like 10mbit
This one was attempting an array rebuild when it failed.
We've had symmetrical ftth since 2004
That’s the dream
There’s a fibre node 100m from my house, but I’m not connected to it.
For some reason they ran copper to a node 800m away
They stopped selling copper lines here in 2009, stopped repairing them in 2018
Just tell you to order fiber
Cost me the same to install fiber in 2004 and 2015, usd300, just I had to dig the ditch myself from road to house in 2004
Google “Australian NBN disaster”
Oh yeah we can’t do that here
Massive nanny state.
I've heard the rumours
$40,000 fine if I so much as change a plug on an extension lead
You are almost as bad as the muricans
We are the literal worst
We aren't allowed to do electrical ourselves
But most people do it
Isn't an issue unless there is a fire
No-one will bother checking
I assume if there’s a serious fire then the evidence is destroyed anyway 🤷♂️
Anyway, I digress. Pi’s have been fine, speed wise. I don’t do anything particularly CPU intensive.
Mmm Pie
🍕 is pie
Technically
Especially if it has pineapple on it. That's just messed up but there it is.
Can anyone tell if these support zigbee? Someone in the reviews says yes but the product page isn't very clear about it.
Aren't Ikea plugs cheaper? They are zigbee
cool good call. ty
The sengled ones seem cheaper actually
4pack for 36, tradfi are 11 each
I did ask 🙂
haha true, i just can't tell if the sengled ones are zigbee or not
they just say bluetooth and I'm assuming bluetooth+HA is a no go
The Ikea ones are definitely UL listed.
UL listed? sorry how do you mean
and definitely ZigBee
I guess I'll just do those then
Are you in North America?
yes
UL Listed means certified. It can matter for fire insurance claims.
ah i see. thank you
do you know where I should ask about light bulbs? the zigbee sengled ones are too expensive and I'm having trouble finding good info on good rgb bulbs
Ikea
really? does a lot of the community use them?
The ones that say "9 color" are RGB from what I recently read. I have an older model that is definitely RGB but it was described as such back then.
It seems that the Ikea controller is limited to 9 colors.
If not, they have a good return policy.
I can't speak for the community but I like mine.
yeah it looks like they have a limited selection of colors, I like the kind you can tune, but thanks! I will keep them in mind for my non-color bulbs
As I said, the 9 colour one should be RGB
Crap there is at least one, I was looking at it yesterday.
Sorry I can't find it.
It looks like the E26 9 colour bulbs are gone. They only seem to have GU10 and E12.
At least in the great white north.
Does anyone have their HA running on a virtual machine on windows 10?
I agree with the opinion in the reddit post that the colours are washed out
oh 😦
dang back to trying to find rgb ones lol
i appreciate the assistance though, will def be picking up some ikea white ones tho
If they have one in the bulb connector you need, try it. It sounds like their newer bulbs are better. Look to the bottom of the reddit post. I bought mine something like 3 years ago.
Which thermostats are currently recommended? My home is heated with a forced air furnace. ZigBee or Z Wave are preferred.
are there any real alternatives to the aeotec 6in1 multisensor ; looking for something that can be plugged into a wall
What's the current "best bang for your buck" as far as WiFi outlets? I'm also fine with Z-wave but I'm looking only for ones that plug into an existing outlet, I'm done installing outlets if I can avoid it. Was looking at the TP-Link Kasa stuff but I guess they screwed with the API and HA doesn't like them anymore
See the pinned message.
Crap, sorry. Budget: not a factor. I'll pay what's needed if it's worth the cost. If I have to give a number, 60 per is my max. Location USA, and I need it to do on and off. Wifi or Zwave
I am located in Canada, prefer zwave or zigbee ; anything cloud free
anyone know if those monoprice Zooz 4-in-1 sensors are any good?
Im looking for smart plugs (UK) with power metering that will work over zigbee. I have TP Kasa plugs but they give me more grief than usefulness
some of the aliexpress ones work fine
oki
Hi. I need silent server for HA. I will have one or two cameras and some Simple automations. Do you have any suggestion about silent servers? Do you know how many RAM need I for two cameras?
@heavy prism, do you have cameras already? do you want to record video to the server?
Is the sonoff SNZB-02 compatible with a home assistant and zigbee dongle or is sonoff bridge required
?
it's compatible
how would you go about adding it?
look at the three choices of zigbee software in the topic in #zigbee-archived, choose a compatible stick, and set up the zigbee software
ty
@sleek path I do not have anything. Im on start my adventure. Yes, I want to save last few days on server- I think HDD will be better than SSD for that
Does anyone have experience with the Sengled door sensors? I've seen some reviews that say they are not that great. However, I have 8 or so of their smart bulbs and they've been really reliable except one that is kind of far from the router. Not sure if I can blame it. Does anyone own these and have any feedback? https://www.amazon.com/Sengled-Required-Compatible-Assistant-SmartThings/dp/B07QHDXQXJ/
they are simple zigbee sensors, what kind of hub do you use
Those are pretty expensive...these are less expensive and I've had a good experience with them: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07YDF7967
I've got this one https://www.amazon.com/GoControl-CECOMINOD016164-HUSBZB-1-USB-Hub/dp/B01GJ826F8 I'm not worried about compatibility with this, just their overall reliability. I'm seeing that they drop pretty often but some people say they are great. I guess the usual with online reviews lol.
Awesome, thanks for the suggestions. I'll probably go with the Linkind ones
so no manufacturer-specific hub, that definitely makes it easier
Device compatibility has to do with the zigbee software, not the adapter btw
Guys RPI 4 8gb will be enough for 2 cameras And some integrations? Of course SSD and HDD for camera records
I can't even open the cases so i'm probably not skilled enough to remove an SMD
Yea I reckon
I want to controll with Hass.io an 16 Channel Relay, i found only Tutorials where People use ESP Home or other Microcontroller between Raspberry and Relay. But i didn't fount tutorial without an Microcontroller. I want to controll the Relay with GPIO i connected all GPIO cables to the Relay. But i don't know how i can controll this, and did i really need ESP Home ore something like this?
Sorry for my English, im German 😉
Kein problem
You need some kind of smart controller
To be able to control ports
That can be an esp (easy), a complete controller board with relays and microcontroller (easy), or a raspberry pi (easy)
There are probably more options
Is it worth buying an conbee 2stick if you already got an cc2532 zigbee2mqtt?
My HA lives happily on 100MB for the foreseeable future
There is not right answer for cramming an infinite number of add-ons and their respective logs and files into a single monstrosity
I'm looking for a good door/window open/close sensor - any recommendations?
What protocol
Fingerprint Smart Locks in Australia
I searched this before posting but was wondering if there is any new recommended smart locks that I can get in Australia that works with Google and Alexa and Home Assistant (as I need it to work with HomeKit).
If I really want fingerprint - Eufy is a straight up winner except it doesn’t yet work with HA nor HomeKit but a solid competition.
If I want all three assistants but no fingerprint - Yale Assure seems to be popular with some Zigbee stick (which I need some help finding).
Any other option worth considering? Can’t I have one that fits all my needs?
PS - I do understand the risks with fingerprint and wifi smart locks and this is mostly for internal use and outsiders won’t really have access anyway.
whats the best or most well respected zwave door lock that plays nice with HA?
Can I get a recommendation for a scene controller that fits in a standard decora switch plate?
I had been using an Eaton scene controller, but it seems to be having problems with JS Zwave
The zooz Zen32 is nice. Inovelli has a similar one
Any thermostat recommendations ? located in Canada . prefer zwave / zigbee
I don't know about Zwave, but I have been happily using ecobee, which seems to integrate alright with HA.
does it matter which one ? lite vs voice
I have the older ecobee 3, so I can't really answer that.
Personally, I am not really comfortable with the voice based assistants.
Ordered the Zen32. Hopefully it works alright as a pure scene controller, as I don't actually have any lights wired to that panel.
It needs power, but see parameter 19&20: https://www.support.getzooz.com/kb/article/608-zen32-scene-controller-advanced-settings/
Any thermostats recommendations for Australia?
I’ve got a 24VAC adapter to use with my Sonoff 4CH Pro irrigation controller. I don’t have a multimeter. How do I tell which of the two wires coming out of it is live and which is neutral?
Other than grabbing one and then the other ⚡️
They're both live.
Oh so it doesn’t matter which I connect to what
Nope. Either way will work.
Sweet
When my RPI Power Status says "Problem" does that mean my system is corrupted? I've tried different USB cables to see if that was the issue, but it just remains on the same status of "Problem."
Does Australia need special thermostats?
Yeah, they have to be designed to work upside down
I was thinking of that, but didn't want to be a smart ass. Took every ounce of will power.
42% of posters here are smart asses
Does anyone know if this works with flux_led integration? The integration says it support magic home devices, the AliExpress discussion says this require an app called “magic home - smart home”. Apparently an separate app exists on the store called “magic home” (which I guess the original). I am a beginner and wanted to try with a pair of cheap wifi bulbs first. Thank you 😊
https://a.aliexpress.com/_mMFEHjU
I know I'm fat, but 42% 😢
If z-wave then yes. We use a different frequency.
Wondering if anyone has experience with the Edifier D12 or their other similarly-priced bookshelf speakers (which I'm assuming have similar electronics)? It looks like a decent choice to pair with a Pi/Squeezebox, but I want to know if it automatically powers on/off or switches sources based on (in)activity? Hoping to avoid this so that HA can accurately presume the state.
Or recommendations for a similar speaker that does 😛
It pained me to give up on the Eaton scene controller, but the Zen32 controller working correctly is really nice.
How accurate are the DHT22’s?
Like, do they need calibrating
I’ve got one reading 5 degrees hotter than an Aqara temp sensor
not accurate at all
Are you using those on the esp board itself or seperate? One of espboard adequate quite a lot. I suggest using a ble based ones, the cheapest one is https://esphome.io/components/sensor/xiaomi_ble.html#lywsd03mmc and use esp32 ble functionality. This gives you mobility on the sensor and not tied down to esp
I have bought two batches of DHT22s now, both lots test within a degree of my reference temp and within 5% of a salt reference for humidity. Which is more than I can say for any of the BME or SHT sensors I've purchased.
no idea why mine were off that much but I made better experiences with BME or ds18b20
Its connected to an esp32 devkit board if that’s what you’re asking
Yeah not that
But anyway, the 2 seperate one I had had deviations. But this xiaomi ble one has been rock solid and I can place it anywhere within 10m distance ( as it runs on coin cell) of esp32
Anyone willing to talk to me in DMs about my ZigBee mesh being unstable
Just ask in #zigbee-archived
How did I not realize that was a channel lmao thank you
I think I just have to stop buying SHTs and BMEs from dodgy sellers on Aliexpress. It's like they get access to factory seconds that don't pass the required specifications and flog them off for a profit. The Dallas 18b20s I've tried have all been good though.
Hey guys, this may be more of a raspberry pi issue than an HASS one, but I woke up this morning to the pi's fan (it's one that comes with cana kit) spinning much louder than normal. Normally I can't hear it at all, but its a really loud spin, it's never done that before. I havent changed anything in HASS lately, nor have i even touched the Pi or changed the hardware. I powered it down and manually cleaned it with an electronics duster as it did have some dust, but when I powered it back up (i waited a couple hours, too) it's still a very loud sound. Anyone experience this? Might something in hass be inadvertently triggering higher fan speeds?
Though it seems the moment I power it up, before most of HASS has a chance to power up, unless its something at the OS level
the fan usually adjusts to cpu temp / load
so you have something failing, making the cpu work hard
poor little overworked childs toy 😦
will hass's web UI help figure out what's going wrong?
Actually, lovelace isnt even starting up apparently. I just turned it back on, I guess i'll give it a moment to reinit
most likely, logs are your friend
I don't see anything in the supervisor logs or the hass logs in config that suggest an error. Just a few deprecations in the packages. And CPU usage is < 5%
Perhaps its a physical error where the fan itself is failing
well if the usage is that low and the fan spins full speed there is something wrong with the fan then yes
Well, something wrong with whatever is controlling the fan I'd suspect
Could also be a failing bearing
Man, this pi is maybe 4 months old
Is there a way to see what the temperature thresholds are via bash?
this fan is controlled with gpio?
are there any cloud-free speakers for home-assist. ?
yes, its on the gpio @gentle fossil
perhaps i can take it out of the case and check the underside to see if there's dust buildup. I cleared the top with an electronics duster, there was a layer of dust settled on the board.
I am running a small greenhouse setup with temp and RH sensor + 4 switches all sonoff devices with tasmota 9.05
a.t.m. I am using the tasmota webgui and have come to the point where I need an MQTT and a broker as I would like graphs of temp and RH and a unified central
the rquirements says PI4 with 4GB and 32GB sd card but ... '(Raspberry Pi 3 is ok too, if you have one laying around)'
would a Raspberry Pi3B 1GB be sufficient for my needs? have a very cheap offer but am unsure if it is sufficient HW wise
Pi3 is probably going to be ok... but a Pi4 will be better
PI4 better is clear, but what is 'probably ok' / 'wouldn't be great' ?
I would never run on a pi, final, but I have standards
as said is 4 switches some rules for nigt and day time and I would like to monitor the last 24hrs temp and RH and grphs
But a lot of people do
and maybe set rules for the siwtches depending on the RH and tempvalues hence MQTT hass os on pi as minimal easy going setup
but if I than would like to ad a display maybe or the prozcessor and ram are at the max with a model 3 than I won't take the deal and go for 4B
read a bit through the net, will go for a Pi4 4GB
Goodevening!
Currently using a Raspberry Pi 3b+ for my HA, but new demand for a file server is coming up. I think efficiency dictates to combine them both (also saves me buying new micro sd cards every 6-12 months 😁).
Is there a lot of difference between using HA on the Raspberry and on e.g. a Synology NAS? All logic regarding installation and such the same?
3b+ works fine btw, never had any problems regarding power or connectivity
A Synology Nas is ... Fine for most, but they usually are limited in some way (number of bays, firmware upgrades stop at some point, proprietary raid, limited memory and CPU, overpriced) so if you step into Synology or qnap, be warned that they don't scale well
What would be a better option?
I would recommend a custom built box or an old enterprise server and truenas scale, very expandable and flexible, and older hardware can be had for cheap
I would like to have at least 2 bays so I could theoretically go up to 20TB or something. Files would mainly be 4K movies and such, so 30-60gb each. Would prefer the device to be able to decode the media so lower-power devices can still watch it
I use a Dell r510 for my setup, it has 12 3.5" bays and 2 2.5" bays
And currently holds 2x12 core CPUs and 128GB RAM
That sounds like overkill for me, performance and price wise :p
I paid $150 for the system shipped from the US to Norway
It came with 1 6core CPU and 32gb ram
A Synology will probably be 3-4x that
For 4+ bays
The Dutch tech website has made a Best Buy Guide aimed at my wishes:
Oh no images here hehe
Would be about 400€, new, based on a Celeron G5900
Exactly
I would think that your system uses quite a lot of power?
It pulls 235w, which is... 5% of my average house draw roughly
But it hosts.. 20+ containers, all my storage, my cloud synchronization of backups, 3 vms
And doesn't even sweat
Should be roughly 70TB of storage there now, need to add some more soon
Yeah your demand is a lot higher than mine lol
That is just my one server though... 🐶
My HA is very basic, mainly a hub for hosting 50+ Zigbee devices
Anything is better than a pi, blue, amber anyway, except intel atoms
As long as I didn’t need the file server I don’t think any other solution could beat the pi regarding cost and power consumption right?
Modern Intel CPUs are quite power friendly
And have a lot of more headroom and IO possibilities
Yeah but headroom for what :p
For anything at all
Running a single service on a system is quite 00s you'd want to pack multiple services into every system and still have room to grow
Yah I understand that, but for that I need to require multiple services to run together 😬
I finally had the chance to disassemble the Pi. There was no buildup of dust on the underside. The top side did have a slight layer of dust that I noticed this morning, which has since been cleared. So I have don't think it's a "legitimate" cause for the fan to go on full power. I checked the connection of the fan, it's on the gpio header correctly, per Canakit's instructions, but the leads from the fan seem to wiggle a little. I seem to remember they were a little tighter when I first installed them.
But this is frustrating as I ordered this back in June or July, so it hasn't even been that long, and I'm not doing anything crazy in hass.
how do you measure the load?
I don't know how to do that tbh. I've just been looking at what hass reports to me in the CPU. But I don't know what I can do to measure the current detected temperature and load
@gentle fossil Canakit is sending me a new fan, so we'll see in the next week or so if that is the problem
Good customer service, to their credit.
The fact that it might be the fan itself rather than something on the Pi?
I've never seen a fan fail when handled with care...
Yeah, I have a feeling its not the fan. It's been at the same spot on my desk since June.
you run hassos?
yes, it's installed
easy to connect to a hdmi screen and keyboard?
mmm, not so much i dont have a mini HDMI
oh wait thats a regular HDMI
I might be able to get it hooked up to a monitor, i will have to find a keyboard in a closet somewhere,
you can see the real usage in the root shell using top
i have terminal installed inside of lovelace, will that give me access to root?
not sure if it's possible anymore... might have to ask in #330990055533576204
I don't run that install method unfortunately
aye i'll check it out in a bit. I'm in a meeting right now, but i'll give it a shot
@gentle fossil top doesnt show any runaways https://i.imgur.com/FVTw3Ff.png
understood. i'll try a direct hookup when im done with my meeting
Forgive me if this is the wrong channel. I'm just got up and running with HA. LOVE IT. I have SmartThings hub and have that integration but I am looking to use a direct method. I looked at the Aeotec Gen7 USB but it is out of stock for over 16 weeks.
Question: Should I wait for it or should I go ahead and get the older Gen5 USB?
folks in #zwave-archived might have some info on that
I definitely can do that. Thank you @gentle fossil
yes tedi, i need some sleep 😄
does anyone have any expierence with hue go products, I like the idea of slow fading in light coming on, I would imagine there is a nice blueprint so i could do the same thing with zigbee bulb, but just wonder if getting the 'legit' product is better/easier
I have a hue go, iris, bloom and others - haven't seen other manufacturers with the same transitions yet and I doubt you can get the same result only with HA... so 👍 from me
Hi. Can someone help me with my questions and offer me possible solutions. I have only been a Home Assistant user for 2 months and at the moment I am not thinking about switch automation or anything like that, because this is a completely unknown topic to me and I will mention it a second time. I also have been using Discord for only a month even though I am registered I don't know how long and also github.
I would like to ask you, considering that I have a whole bunch of tablets and additional speakers at home, can I use the tablet instead of Amazon Echo / Google Home because I don't have the money to try things and discard them later or sell them, I have to handle the money wisely.
The next question is whether (if the thing works on tablets) can I play, listen, watch on tablets: pictures, movies, music, locally on another computer (windows PC. Home Assistant running from Oracle VM on the same computer)?
Can I customize the display on tablets to an individual user? Which program is used on the phone tablets to connect to the Home Assistant.
Thank you for any advice and greetings from Slovenia.
p.s. is there a user who lives in Slovenia and uses Home Assistant a little more professionally (for automation ...)
Would this computer be suitable for running Proxmox running two VMs, one Windows and the other Home Assistant?https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B096V28NM7/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A19DTZHT4S76Z5&psc=1
thats a lot, others will chime in if some of my information is incorrect, tablets I would use fully kiosk browser with as you can have that boot on startup of tablet and its probably the simplest route to take, you can even have advance features in paid version of screen wake up on motion detection from camera on tablet. on the speaker front, if these are not smart there is the route of direct to tablet through headphone jack or Bluetooth (with the fully kiosk app on tablet and the integration installed via hacs the tablet will show up with a media player entity and work fine through the speakers connected to it) there are other ways but this is probably the easiest and cheapest. other people would be best to advise on other things as I just play music from Spotify now day's on all my tech. As for asking about if a PC would run windows and Home assistant via VM well most PC's will, but the issue you have here is what will you be using the PC for with windows, because I can slow down a 18 core machine with 96gb of memory, a 28 core xeon with some tasks I do on a computer so really it depends on what your doing with it.
Does anyone here use Netatmo Weather Station ? 😉
Anyone have good recommendations for motion sensors that integrate well with home Assistant? I dont wanna waste money on ones that arent fully supported and dont work well.
Anyone here able to help me figure out why my RAM and CPU have been pegged at 100 for days now? On the newest beta. Rpi4 + ssd. uninstalled/deleted every service, integration, entity, card, view and otherwise that i could find that was not needed. Something is still off
using systemmonitor integration to track this - wondering if this is just not reading properly?
i use the v1 wyze sensors and the wyze bridge (wyzesense) integration -- i have to say in my experience it works better than my sylvania zigbee sensors.
If it's a beta issue post in #beta
Probably the DST bug @cloud latch ? Have you tried restarting HA ? If not ask in #beta since you are running beta
Snap
thanks will do - not a reboot issue for sure
Thanks for the recommendation it looks like in order for those to work though you have to pay for their monitoring service or at least get the starter kit. Would prefer something stand alone or just needing a bridge for them to connect too
nope you dont need a monitoring plan. the sensors work with the bridge, plug the bridge into your home assistant rpi or whatever hardware youre using and it just works
I am acutally running HA on unraid. Thought about getting a pi to set it up on but have been to lazy and cheap since it works on unraid fine
Do you happen to have links to the bridge all I am seeing on their site is the v2 sensors which say "Requires Wyze Home Monitoring Core Starter Kit. This device will NOT function as an individual or standalone product." which is i click on the link to the starter kit takes me to this page https://wyze.com/home-security-monitoring
Thanks for the reply. I use Windows as [home server [file sharing, backup, VPN server], media server, video view/recorder server, torrent client).
lately ive been buying off ebay or other places around online. The v2 sensors have been confirmed to work with the same bridge (i may have extra bridges lying around but no sensors i can offer)
Since I am from Slovenia a lot of music, movies from the surrounding regions (ex Yugoslavia) do not exist on the Internet, in addition, these are paid services, most of the things I need / listen to / watch I have stored locally (intranet).
but also while wyze says its not standalone, it will still work to buy direct. https://www.reddit.com/r/homeassistant/comments/nmhtfc/home_assistant_wyze_sense_v2_added_support_for/
Found a listing on ebay for what i am guessing is the old starter kit for about 25 bucks. Will see if i can win this auction. If not i guess i will look in to something else. Renting at the moment so dont want to do it yet but i would like to do switches with motion sensors eventually
I installed a fully kiosk browser on the tablet, but I haven't been able to check how it works yet.
my house is all set up with these in almost every room, it takes about 1s from the time i walk in the room for HA to process the trigger, talk to node red, and run service to turn lights on at x level based on time of day
Yeah thats what i wanna set up
Although i will need some more smart bulbs to make it work. But finding reasonable prices on those isnt easy
Probably based on position and sensitivity. If it catches the door moving and is enough to trigger it.
hi everyone.
is there anyone that would be able to help me with a e-paper display?
mine are above the doors on the molding and i dont think many of them have great downward detection. im fine with 1s.
You probably want #diy-archived
ok thanks 🙂
if its with zigbee I have had no problems with the aqara ones that also double up as lum sensor
they are expensive though except aliexpress were I got 4 for £28 and considering there £27 each here they were a bargain

I’m having an issue where my HA running in a vm is not picking up my deconz usb stick despite it definitely being passed through and it working before. Nothing is listed on the hardware tab. I did have to change the device path a while back in the .storage folder but I can’t see where to do that now? Any other help appreciated
With what hypervisor?
Unraid
So kvm then?
Yes I think so? Sorry I may get the terminology confused
I've never had a need to do hw passthrough with kvm, but it should be visible and sharable via virsh and export of the xml
Also, unraid supports docker which is a much better option
I can see it on unraid and I click on the pass through option on the vm set up to pass the conbee through but HA can’t see it at all.
Docker is better than a vm? I went for the vm as I get supervisor as well
Supervisor is just an overlay that obfuscates, add-ons are just docker containers you have no control of
But that is my opinion
That said, that is probably a unraid issue, but hard to say, but the right channel to troubleshoot would probably be #330990055533576204 or a discord that supports unraid
Okay great thanks
Hello. I bought aqara double switch with neutral, and just found out that i have some switches in the house that have no neutral. Are they installable if i skip the neutral wire?
No, there is a no neutral version for a reason
And can i install a double switch in place of a single switch and skip L2?
Probably a dumb question, but will the aqara m2 hub work as a zigbee hub for any zigbee device, or just aqara ones?
just aqara ones
Would the aqara sensors work with one of those generic usb zigbee hubs?
yes if they're supported by the chosen integration
What do I need to look for to see if their supported? Or better yet, any recommendations on a good intro to zigbee stuff?
pinned messages in #zigbee-archived
well thats what I get for not scrolling down. thanks!
So does the new Tuya integration pull through power usage for smart plugs now?
Ooh it does 😃
So, I'm curious. I tried doing a search for doorbell cams online and on here...nobody seems to have a clear recommendation and most people on here that ask don't seem to get a response. Is there just nothing good that can integrate with HA?
that was also my experience a few years ago. I gave up and made my own, a zwave switch wired to the original doorbell switch and analogue cam as peephole replacement made it for me. stealth level 💯
@wanton marsh amcrest doorbells have local control/video stream
I just saw the video for the ad410.... Looking at that
anyone gotten creative and built/created an Anderson door lock sensor?
Hello. Is there such thing as a touch wall switch that has no relay in it? The idea is that the switch doesn’t need to have a relay since the bulb is controlled by HA. The switch is only there as an input for HA.
You don't have to use the relay. Most (if not all) can run in "detached mode".
That is my plan B but a version without relays would be cheaper.
.
What to buy as a universal HUB? (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001315140969.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.5cf9190ffd536w&algo_pvid=9c5aaf3f-de55-4851-acd2-5ba3b51d2216&aem_p4p_detail=2021110323085912350515000731160016199759&algo_exp_id=9c5aaf3f-de55-4851-acd2-5ba3b51d2216-7&pdp_ext_f={"sku_id"%3A"12000017908518134"})
If you're after Zigbee, see that bot message and the #zigbee-archived channel
Just get an conbee 2 stick. Problem solved 😁
Something CC2652-based would be a better choice IMO
Unless you really want to use closed-source Deconz...
Hello guys, does anyone know any 2 gang wall switches that don't require neutral wire and work with ewelink?
@jovial pasture Looking for advice about a device to buy? Remember to provide guidance on:
- Which country you're in
- What your budget is
- What protocols you prefer (eg Zigbee, WiFi, Z-Wave)
- Any features you want (such as power monitoring, dimming, etc)
I hope this is the right place to ask - I bought some Homematic smart thermostats, and am trying to figure out how to hand them over to HASSOS. A lot of the articles talk about a "CCU", but I have no idea what that is, and Google isn't helpful. I have a setup of two thermostats and a small controll box, is that a CCU ?
The packaging calls it a "WLAN access point"
That'd be https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/homematic/ and the #integrations-archived channel
The CCU will be a hardware device
Thanks, I'll ask there
So I am looking for some compatible motion sensors with HA. Tuya, xiaomi or another integration doesnt really matter. Is there one that stands out? I am living in the netherlands. Prefered protocol WiFi or Zigbee
For Zigbee have a look at the Xiaomi Aqara ones
Thanks 👍 Will check it out. 11.11 and black friday is on its way 🤑
Hi, I currently run my octoprint on my raspberry zero 2 w, would it be possible to run the HA portable on the zer 2 w along with octoprint?
I know the minimum requirements are something like a pi 4 with 4gb but a few years ago when the pi 4 was'nt even here people used HA aswell right?
I see
My home assistant blue is stuck in a boot loop. I made encrypted backups until it happened and I can get them to start to restore but then they error out at some point and fail. I used samba backup addon to make the backups. I hope to get the boot loop thing fixed to get in there and exteact config files but I can’t seem to do that. Where should I start?
Does anyone have experience with hp thin clients
I can buy a t520 with 16gb ss and 4gb ram for 30
Why is it horrible?
Performance and proprietary, haven't seen one since 2015
The 620 is quite popular I think
The guy already installed HA on the 52p and its only 30
I dont do a lot of things with my home assistant so might be good?
I dont need an insane mini computer or something
Ah okay yea that is not good
also uses a bunch more power
that's more than double if that's the delta
Can anyone recommend some UK WI-FI smart plugs with local API support with home assistant?
Currently have TP-Link kasa but since their local integration is gone I need something else
You'll have many more choices if you can use Zigbee, or Z-Wave
I know but if possible would like to stick with wifi
Hi all can I ask? I have boot my pi with HA on ssd. Was a breeze thanks to everyone. Am using argon 1 case but the fan don't seem to be moving. How do I activate the fan?
Thank you
Was a breeze thanks to everyone. Am using argon 1 case but the fan don't seem to be moving.
ha!
What is a piece of hardware I can use to measure the total power consumption in my home and have it hook into HA's energy dashboard?
iotawatt
If I have two electrical panels in my house, what should I do?
I could probably run a low-voltage wire between them if I really needed to, but obviously that isn't preferred
Simple hardware question. I needed some E27 bulb sockets for the Ikea lights coming soon™, so I ordered some. How do I attach the power? I am used to the sockets that have grub screws to hold the wires. I'm guessing the wired poke down one of the holes. I have no idea which one. https://photos.app.goo.gl/x3SutWDg4Uq16bHR9
sorry to be annoying
PI4 4GB atm is hard to get
worldwide chip problem seems to hit here too
either very expensive, or not available atm and delivery scheduled unknown
... would a PI4 2GB do the job or is the ram for HASS OS crucial and 4GB a minimum?
Probably fine. Other options are stuff like used laptops, used/new mini-pcs etc
I give my haos VM 4gb and it’s using about 1/2 gb
half a gig seems to be about right for me as well
sounds like a OI4 2GB than should be fine, as these are really cheap to have even new compared to 2nd hand 4GB
Yeah unless you’re using like NodeRED, a ton of integrations and things like that 2gb should be fine
I was running on a Pi 3 which I think is 1gb after my HA Blue died and it was fine other than the CPU being a bit slow
and to be honest I wouldn't use it as for the HASS OS in my greenhouse with the few switches and 2 sensors
and all I would kike is to unify the 4 brwoser guis into one, have graphs for temp and RH and an MQTT so I can set rules for switches depending n RH and temp values
most important to me is the last 2
with the web gui only w/o mqtt I cannot set rules on RH temp values and I definately want to se a 24hrs graph of RH and temp to monitor thee better and adjust the rules
a.t.m. I am adjusting all manually in the tasmota web guis and have a list of rules and actions that I execute in the cosole manhually more or less, and that is a pest on the long run
why not get an older laptop or small computer
I started a few trials with an old macmini 2009 model but no chnace with osx and I am not so firm with installing linux and hass mqtt etc via docker vm or whatever
so I thought cheapest way would be the PI way with Hass OS
if I could get the macmini to run hass os that would be of cause great and cheapest way
would really appreciate if that would work
bu as mentioned didn't get it to run and gave up after a week
if anbody has ecperiense on setting up hass on the mini and would be willing to help and guide me I would be deeply thankful and really appreciate that
🍎 🤮
installing ubuntu on it should be easy enough? what have you tried?
I tried it as descibed in the docs on the max OSX and that didn workout to fast enough, the whole mini osx was too slow
that I tried debian natively as I found an imae for it that was bootable but was too complicated in the end
😶🌫️
if ya have more info and help how to get ubuntu (never used linux in my life am since more than 25 years on macs only) onto the mac, appreciate
but than that is not the end, so I would need a VM or docker right?
and there for sure I will be unskilled enough to mess it up
you don't even need the whole swap and partition thing if you just follow the ubuntu installer
get into the installer, format the hdd, install with default config
as soon as you have ubuntu running its a matter of
cheers but .... !
qote form your link:
For this article, I’m using the same 2014 Mac mini that took the starring role in the Plex Media Server article. One thing that’s important for this experiment is to have a Mac that supports EFI — Extensible Firmware Interface.
and my mini is brand new in the box, but a 2007 or 2009 model have to check again
curl -fsSL https://get.docker.com -o get-docker.sh
sh get-docker.sh
usermod -aG docker ${USER}
sudo apt-get install docker-compose
``` and then hit us up again to get the container working
every mac supports efi
they do not support bios
It is the foundation of the Intel macs at least
ok fine so i< will try to follow your link macmini as server and come back for sure, cheers folks and big thx to @gentle fossil fore the moment
let me search a better guide
this one is way out of proportion
heck, you can even just follow a youtube video
(this might be the only occasion I will recommend a video, videos regarding HA are usually out of date)
very nice thank you
oh sorry another question before I start ... just watched the video
I have key mouse and screen for setting up the mini o/c
but than it should run healess and best would be to be able to steer it from the iMac
... possible?
sure
fine
than et me dig it out, cable a display to it and start my chance with ubuntu
you can't mess up... if you do just start from the beginning
if you are really desperate you can point a webcam at the screen and wee will guide you through the install in hangout
hero ... awesome, thx a lot
downoading Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS and creating a bootable usb HD with balena etcher, done this before
let's see how it runs, as my mini has only 2 gig ram I think
install running
you can switch to #449717345808547842 as this is not suited for this channel
kk will do
Hi I need some help to.setup 12c to get the fan working on argon one
Is there any recommendation for a zigbee, z-wave, thread/matter (or would have support for these later) controller that I could plug into LAN and integrate with home-assistant? I don't really want to do USB if possible as I run HA on a VM on a server rather than a Pi.
I am testing a celeron 4100 over my pi 4 and WOW. It is like a screamer, but I don't have anything loaded yet so that probably makes some difference
any suggestions on what not to restore from my Pi, that might be Pi specific?
WOW. that is the easiest hardware switch I think I have ever done. The celeron is way snappier than the RPI 4.
Welcome to the right side of running HA
@wanton marsh AFAIK there are no network-connected Zwave adapters, but there are a few Zigbee ones
Not sure about thread/matter/the-other-zigbee
Hi am new to hass ive just got my rasbee for my rasberry pi 4 and im heaving some problems installing it my problem is ive not got a good way to acces the config.txt any help would be great
ive got a monitor and mouse connected to the rasberry but i dont know how to get to the root console
Hi, how can I enabled my odroid n2+ fan?
what installation method are you running on that n2?
Not sure if this is the right place for this question, but any recommendations for light bulbs? I got a Kasa Smart Bulb a few days ago and it seems nice so far. I also heard LIFX was really nice and I'm looking for at least 1 high end/expensive bulb for my office. The rest I'd like to keep < $20 and no hub requirement
At least 1 high end/expensive bulb? Philips Hue?
Sorry, haven't seen that you did write me. I am using HAOS (Home Assistant Operating System).
you're probably out of luck, the n2+ is sold as HA device with support for HAOS but only in the configuration without the fan
so the fan is not really controllable with the image unfortunately
on the other hand, they seem to have built in support for it... not sure about the current state
https://community.home-assistant.io/t/home-assistant-blue-fan-control/325450
Is something like a Dell Poweredge R710 worth it or are they too old by now? I see some for a reasonable price with raid controller cards as well but not sure for the performance of their CPUs given they are rather older models. For example compared to something like an Optiplex instead with an i7
They're not bad - I have some of those and the next few generations at work and they're all pretty fine
Obviously depends on what CPU is in them
e.g. 2x E5645 with 32GB RAM, 4x2TB & H700 RAID controller for 330
cpubenchmark has those at 5K mark
compared to some other xeons I've been looking at theese ones seem a lot better
Westermere... you may have issues with Docker images
It's missing a bunch of newer CPU commands, like movbe, that are expected
oh no god knows we need docker
I know that pain as I have some of that age that I had to build special images for
Hmm doing that sounds a lot more above my knowledge
would that be a problem for most images or more exclusive?
Probably most TBH
Sadly the only way to find out is to grab them
I found that anything newer than 2018 base for Debian/Ubuntu was likely to fail - but it wasn't 100%
that doesn't sound so promising now
wondering if it would then be worth it to get it and then upgrade the CPUs but would also assume there's a limit how newer I could go with
I'm looking for a device to smartify my existing wall switches. So like a shelly but no need for the relays. Powered by mains and small enough to fit behind the switch. WiFi or ZigBee. Any recommendations?
shelly i3
Ok kind of disappointed I didn't think of the i3. Cheers!
Evening All, I've been running HA in docker on unraid for the last few years, but i'd like to try it on a decent old pc i have laying about (just so that things don't go offline if i need to make changes to unraid basically) I've just run etcher and got the os onto the HDD using the generic x86/64 image. Can I migrate my config from the appdata folder on unraid onto the drive i'll be using in the new setup?
that is anything but hardware related
but yes make sure eveything from one /config ends in new /config
Any recommendations for a physical keypad to use for arming/disarming an HA manual alarm?
I feel dumb asking this but for the life of me I can't figure it out. I picked up an athom bulb preflashed with tasmota. I hopped on the AP and gave it the credentials for wifi but I can't find it. I also can't figure out how to reset it to make it fire up that temporary AP again so maybe I can look for a mac address or something.
Can you sort by uptime?
I have last seen but no uptime. I don't have that many devices seen in the last two hours and I hit the IP on all of them with no results.
Tasmota power cycle detection for resetting. Power the device off, then power on and off six times, then power it on again
It should reset to AP mode
Going to go try it thanks!
That got it back in pairing. It kind of looks like the temp AP it sets up may have part of the mac address in it.
Any idea what the checkmark next to AP1 password is for?
Displaying the password in the clear IIRC
I'm going to setup a 2nd ssid with no space and see if it makes any difference. Then I should see one client connected as well.
The bulb goes full white which I would have expected means it's on wifi but it does not show up in AP clients or DHCP leases
I guess I'll shut that SSID down and setup one on my phone and see if it connects.
I'll hop over to the tasmota discord as this isn't really homeassistant related.
Okay, I got it working. I connected it to a temporary AP, updated firmware, and it seems to be working now.
oh wait, there was one other variables. I turned off 802.11r
Let me flip that back on and see if it goes down again
Anything new USB/hardware-wise change with 2021.11.1? I just upgrade from 2021.8.8 and now HA cannot discover my zwave stick and zwave JS won't start. Supervisor/System/Hardware doesn't show the device any longer. 😕
Been using /dev/serial/by-id/usb-0658_0200-if00 forever
It could be due to a zwave_js addon update mentioned in #zwave-archived
Hello everyone. Are sengled wifi bulbs tuya?
Nope
What are good cheap tuya bulbs that have wifi?
I would like to to change my bulbs to smart bulbs and for what I have seen the best solution is tuya wifi. Is this correct?
Or is there a better platform?
I would say that's a poor choice unless they can be flashed with Tasmota/ESPHome
Zigbee for lighting is a good bet since it's local by nature. Are you looking for white only?
I would need some white and some rgb. If the price differnce is less than a dollar then I would buy all rgb
Unlikely to be only a difference of a dollar. Where are you located?
I live in Panama but I bring these kinds of products from the USA
Ikea has some zigbee lights around that price point
How much should I be budgeting then per bulb?
Take a look for yourself 😄 https://www.ikea.com/us/en/cat/wireless-led-bulbs-36813/
I think the best bet is just to cry in the corner
😒
The reason I was looking at the tuya ones is because of the new integration by tuya for home assistant.
Si at the end you recommend zigbee with conbee 2?
Is it stable?
I recommend zigbee with not conbee 2 😄
Something CC2652 based would be a better choice IMO
I've been running a zigbee network for 3+ years with no major issues. Currently I'm up to about 70 devices
This is getting more complicated by the second haha
tuya replaced with esphome 🤯
If possible, yes
i cracked open a tuya plug only to find the esp8266 is in an almost impossible to reach position
At least it was an esp8266
I've bought... 15 or so tuya plugs over the years, they were all flashable via OTA thankfully
Had to crack one open to fix a bad flash though
i basically destroyed the plastic shell on this one taking it apart too
they clearly weren't designed to come apart once they're assembled
any suggestions what to use as 433Mhz bridge integration, apart from Sonoff RF bridge?
well, I have shitload window/door and IR sensors layin' around 🙂
Condolences
30 or so lol
oh, any suggestions for that? no need to be 433 😄
ZigBee, zwave, DIY wifi
I'm looking to upgrade my HA hardware to something a little future proofed. I've seen Intel NUCs suggested online as upgrade picks, but don't fully understand the differences between the ones I see on Amazon. Is the cheapest one available still good enough for HA? Are there certain properties I should be looking for? I live in the US and my home network includes a USB Zigbee network.
Any laptop or desktop from the last 15 years will be good enough for most
Except atoms
I don't have an available old laptop or desktop, and I'm hesitant to shop second hand to get an unknown lifetime out of it
The answer about which NUC to buy is also in that answer
Anything is an upgrade from a rpi, blue, amber
Gotcha, thank you
Even with the new integration that’s being built by tuya itself?
Yeah, I'm never gonna buy a pure tuya product, so no idea
If it doesn't have an ESP inside that I can flash, it goes in the trash(tm)
🎤
that should be 📌
so my intel nuc seems to maybe be dying....... but new nucs are crazy expensive. if i cant wait for amber, would my best bet be getting a blue?
Or any other system
well i prefer to keep it behind my tv, which means i need something small form factor like a nuc
Lots of used NUCs, also just fix whatever is wrong with the one you have
A blue or an amber would be a downgrade compared to a NUC
im not sure what the hell is wrong with it, my HA keeps losing its radar images that are still image cameras that load from various weather websites. then i check my HA log and there are all sorts of timeout for cloud based stuff. then i check dmesg and there are all sorts of pci bus messages. its weird though, when the problem happens i can shel into the HA docker container and grab those weather radar's no problem, but HA wont load them until I restart it. it started as once every couple of weeks, then every few days and now multiple times a day
worked fine for years
yeah its wired
someone suggested i change DNS to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 and i did and it didnt help
im not really having any other network issues
i was going crazy trying to find a network problem until i saw the pci bus stuff in dmesg, although i wasnt able to link the pci bus id's to the ethernet adapter pci id
Considered an Optiplex micro? I have a 7040 micro that was < $200 USD. Had a quad core i5, 8GB DDR4, and a 128GB SSD.
nice, i will check it out, thanks
The PCI stuff is a red herring according to Google @frank mica
With a sonoff ifan controller. Can you have multiple controllers in the same area without affecting each other?
Looking for advice about a device to buy? Remember to provide guidance on:
- Which country you're in
- What your budget is
- What protocols you prefer (eg Zigbee, WiFi, Z-Wave)
- Any features you want (such as power monitoring, dimming, etc)
Hey I've got a blind motor and it says it's open when it's closed and closed when it;s open
That sounds like an #integrations-archived related question... it'd help if you'd mention which one too
it's on ZHA and it happens to be using the tuya quirk
Looking for some suggestions for security flood lights. My bog standard one has packed in.
I've got a few ideas:
- Shelly 1 + pir + flood light (only issue is finding a compatible pir)
- Shelly1 + flood light + cctv camera + frigate person detection to trigger
- Shelly1 + flood light + hue outdoor motion sensor.
However I've very open to other suggestions and if anyone knows of any UK pir sensors that work with the Shelly 1 please let me know.
Location - UK
Budget - n/a
Protocols - Any Protocol
Features - Power monitoring
no
i can hear tradfris, hue not so much
Can't hear my Tradfri's
I have tried several Hue and TRADFRI products, and they all emit a high-pitched noise
Hello all !
I’m living in France and looking for GU10 ZigBee spot.
I’d like to know if some of you have experience with IKEA TRADFRI & LIDL Livarno products.
Doesn't this both products work « out of box » with ZigBee Home Automation (ZHA) ?
Do I need to buy a gateway for one of this brand to make it accessible on HA ?
you might be extremely sensitive to those frequencies
the Hue ones are very faint, the TRADFRI lights are more noisy
ikea is a better option if you're choosing and widely supported
I have a mixture of Tradfri and Hue (30+ bulbs) and haven't noticed any high pitched noise. I am sensitive to high pitched noises as well. Is it all bulbs in multiple locations / different lighting circuits?
Yes, they all emit noise to some degree, I have also tested them at a different place across the city, and I've never had any problem with coil whine with other devices.
it's a very faint superhigh pitched kind of white noise I can hear
I can only have a hue in my bedroom, tradfri wont let me sleep well
Weird, I've never seen (heard) this with LED bulbs before. I've seen it with bog standard LED bulbs setup incorrectly with dimmers but not with zigbee bulbs. Hopefully it's something that can be fixed. Best of luck.
I have recorded a 30W TRADFRI wireless controller at close range when the light strip is slightly dimmed, this is how it sounds: https://www.dropbox.com/s/eaktaya3i8bd8cx/noise.mp4?dl=0
The TRADFRI smart plug also has a constant buzz.
Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus v4 with Bluetooth has similar issues, the controller and the power supply have coil whine, more noticeable when the light is cold/blue, or when it is dimmed.
yep, thats what I hear from the tradfris
how the f did you get that recording that clear?
I've opened up the Lightstrip controller, but I don't know very much about electronics, there is a capacitor that emits an even louder voise if you touch it with a plastic. 😆
@gentle fossil I've held the phone close.
You said you'd tried the devices in other properties as well, do you hear the same buzz?
that must be a whole bunch louder than mine though, my phone FOR SURE cannot record that
@quaint cypress Yes, I figured maybe it's an issue at my place, but I've carried over a couple of devices to a friend, and we can hear it at his place too.
Are you US or Europe or somewhere else?
You don't necessarily hear it if there's ambient noise, an open window etc.
EU
But it is very annoying when the devices are close to your head, like in a bedroom, or at a desk, and you sit in silence.
you'll lose hearing with age so it'll fix itself eventually 😁
thats what I count on... since 20 years 😄
I wish the sweet release of hearing loss could come sooner. 😋
Grindcore at 100db+ you'll be deaf soon enough
No idea what to suggest, I am still sensitive to these kind of noises and I've not seen anything like this with smart plugs or led bulbs. I'm sat in a small room right now surrounded by bulbs and plugs and can't hear any whine.
Do you hear anyhing if you put your ear next to a bulb and slightly dim it?
i have one led strip that was driving me mad but smart bulbs are fine
This is how the controllers look like when opened up: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/mzoyhgzp6dwzste/AACjpYgZaNfFEFgxJObr8WTsa?dl=0
The Hue controller I think it whines from or around that capacitor, the TRADFRI controller is a mess, it makes a noise from at least 6 places.
No, I've just gone around the house and can't hear any whine. I have a light which has 6 hue bulbs very close to each other and couldn't hear any whine while lowering and increasing the brightness
Thanks for checking!
If I plug a microphone into my PC my motherboard emits a very slight coil whine. Not enough that my partner can hear but it drove me insane so I bought a USB mic to get around it.
I've read that sometimes it can be solved with some hot glue, but in my case touching/pressing on components with some plastic does not make a difference, the vibration is still there.
I'm planning to send back everything. 😦
It's interesting to me that it's multiple devices from different manufacturers, initially I thought you might have an issue with your electrical circuit but since it's happening at a friends house as well that makes it unlikely. I'm really not sure
the hot glue is mostly just to cover the coil
I'll have to continue reaching for the button of the desk lamp, like an animal.
could make a difference
but I doubt it, as said this is way more clear and louder than what I experience
Hello, im looking to buy some Tuya smart switch modules on AliExpress. they dont have a brand. is there any way i can confirm if they allow for tasmota firmware?
no way
Hi for a demo for university Im in need for a home assistant server, we wanted to get the amber at first but sadly can not wait for the release date as our deadline is in december, is there a board for around the same price that you guys would recommend, preferably something that does not run from an sd card
same board Blue uses
Why not use a raspberry pi and run SSD from USB?
that would work aswell guess but we want it to have some headroom for future development
any x86 computer can be a HA server as well
the odroid is faster than the amber right?
i don't have an amber to compare
i have found memory being a bigger issue than CPU in my setup. a $50 pi has 4 cores @ 1.5ghz, a $200 celeron PC has 4 cores @ 1.8ghz bot will do most stuff
i use a PC because i want to run Coral and needed a PCI slot for it otherwise i would have used a Pi. right now im running 25 containers with most options turned on and using ~40% CPU
BTW amber uses a pi4 module
exactly
okay thanks let me ask around if theres any nuc left on campus
we have budget though
use the budget on devices 🙂 that is where the cost is
im guessing you know better than most on tuya devices, any feedback on issues with the cheap switches?
do they just dont work or the quality is really bad compared to others
i see these everywhere lol
almost half the price of others as well so im wondering if they are really that bad
issue with the cheap switches?
i have a switch that has become unavailable do i repair it with tuya - how can i revitalize
there's way too many switches to know what you're referring to
they look like the athom switches just no name, not sure if im allowed to link to ali on this group
that's just a universal shell, insides can vary wildly
if you really want Tuya switches the Eardatek models are high build quality
I went to Eardatek and dont see one, im looking for the smart switch boxes tat go behind the switch
was looking at 10 or 20 pack at the prices they are going for i would use some inline with lamps as well
a treatlife dimmer switch
sooo, not wall switches but switch modules
yes sorry
just buy sonoff or shelly
was looking at the sonoff but they are double the price
i know thats why im asking about them, they show ce certification
