The common factor is MQTT. Check your broker is still running and accessible. See if you can listen to messages on the broker ( configuration > Integrations > MQTT > Configure > Listen to a topic )

Any advices on a Power/Plug Adapter ?

  • UK
  • Zigbee (deCONZ / ZHA)
  • No real budget... just something that will last
  • Would like to monitor the power it's using (for phone charging)

@gritty zinc you're from england, right?

gritty zinc
#

Yes

little sentinel
#

Right perfect, so you like UK plugs

#

gonna look at those salus ones (and that list)

gritty zinc
#

I like UK plugs as much as the next guy.

little sentinel
#

i think you like them more than the average plug liking guy

gritty zinc
#

🤷‍♂️ A plug's a plug. But if you want something ZigBee-based without being too bulky, it's either those Salus or the Innr ones, and the Innr ones don't have power monitoring on the UK models.

Gonna try be bit more specfic when asking

I'm using DeCONZ right now but might try Zha, yeah i'll have to re-configure my ***one ***device

I thought I'd just do light switches. Now I've got sensors on all the doors and started putting smart plugs in.

#

OH i see what you mean about Innr.. it's a brand haha

#

thought you meant as in replace the actual socket!

gritty zinc
#

Nah. There's nothing commercially available in the UK yet for actual ZigBee power sockets. Gotta use smart plugs still.

little sentinel
#

Just need it to get more popular

gritty zinc
#

There's one brand I found that you can get through installers but the only price I saw for it was in the region of £70 per double socket.

#

I'd pay £20-30 and install it myself. £70 plus paying a contractor to come out and fit it? Jog on.

little sentinel
#

haha just that plug

#

i need somebody to come install cameras 😢

verbal magnet
#

@gritty zinc I currently have no sensors in my home automation build out, any recommendations? I know you have the right to just link me to blakadder, but I'd like a bit more input on which sensors you have used and where you have used them?

#

I've only been able to find lightwaveRF and energenie for smart UK sockets, both which I;d like to avoid the same way I want to avoid Corona Virus or the Plague, both use proprietary really badly made communications technologies that do not scale

#

I got an ikea TRÅDFRI sensor; got it working via zigbee2mqtt ; an occupancy sensor got created but I never get anything happening when using it in an automation. Using the mqtt topic listener works nicely however.

any particular idea why the related motion sensor isn't doing anything? I can see in the log of mqtt that the right payload is sent

Is it possible to delete a device (and all it’s entities) from UI? Only found posts on doing it by completly removing integrations and/or editing json files. I have ”zombie devices” I wan’t to get rid of.

gentle grove
#

does editing and disabling the entity do what you want?

fossil ingot
#

I tried deleting all entites for a device, but I still can’t delete the device itself from the UI.

gritty zinc
#

The device is created by the integration and must be removed by the integration.

#

Integrations handle adding/removing things in the various registries behind the scenes.

fossil ingot
#

Thanks! That explains it, so if the integration doesn’t allow removal per device I have to remove the integration and start over. In this case with rfxtrx devices was added automatically and removing them from configuration.yaml doesn’t work (after disabling auto add).

I've been working on a PR (https://github.com/home-assistant/core/pull/38255) for Lutron Caseta sensors, need some quick help with the investigation (because I don't have any Caseta sensor, I only have the switches and shades):

  1. I need to know what the unique_id has been used in entity registry for Caseta sensors.
  2. Go to the file at config/.storage/core.entity_registry .
  3. Find your Caseta sensor (you can search for its entity_id).
  4. Let me know what the value is for unique_id.

Thanks in advance!

Newbie question. I'm all installed on Virtual Box and can access the front end on browser and iPad app. It's time to invest in some IoT devices. With all the knowledge here, I'd love some advice of what your thoughts would be if you could start over from scratch now. Would you stay away from any one technology or go all in with one -- (e.g. zwave, zigbee, wifi, etc.). Or is mixing and matching not an issue. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

gloomy spoke
little sentinel
#

That i can make do anything...?

gritty zinc

Pretty much. HA will see an event, you can use that event as the trigger in an automation.

little sentinel
#

Oh that's cool then

#

So in theory i could have a 'light switch' right next to bed

#

to turn light on/off

gritty zinc
#

You could... but I wouldn't use a giant one like that next to my bed 😄

little sentinel
#

haha

#

I've seen xiaomi has some 1-button remotes

gritty zinc
little sentinel
#

so probably could use it as a toggle

#

oh exactly that haha

gritty zinc
#

Yeah. They do multiple types of events, so you could have multiple automations from one button.

#

Actions
For model “lumi.remote.b1acn01”
single, double, hold, release
For model “lumi.sensor_switch.aq2”
single, double, triple, quad

little sentinel

I think mine was the first one, even though I only ordered it recently. Not sure if you can tell which one you're ordering since they all look the same.

Still, it's for the missus so she can toggle the bedroom light. She doesn't care about being able to do tons with it.

haha yeah that's what im thinking

#

Just a light switch

#

is it possible to have an action which would start/disable automation?

i.e "Going out button" which would enable several automations such as turn tv off/on at x time, turn lights on etc..

gritty zinc

Well that's a question for #automations-archived but yes, there are many ways you could handle that scenario.

but £8 from china

oh £25 + £5 delivery !

earnest shadow
#

Slow, SD cards are unreliable, many power supplies suck
@gloomy spoke yeah i'm using an external SSD and the manufacturer supplied power supply, no issues

#

if you do that just make sure you migrate docker properly to the ssd, otherwise it'll use the internal SD card

#

but i'm running grafana/mosquitto/home assistant/unifi/emoncms/influxdb/traggo off my pi4 no worries for quite a while now, and a number of those are pretty write intensive

long bolt
#

I'm really struggling with Broadlink/Home Assistant integration. I think my base misunderstanding has to do with the remote vs. switch distinction. Based on the docs, is the "remote" configuration simply a tool to learn the hex codes? With those codes in hand do you then transfer over to switch usage to get buttons available in code? Or can I use the send_command functionality to make on/off buttons for IR devices?

#

Hey, is it possible to play music via bluetooth speaker ? samsung soundbar to be precise.

gentle eagle

@quartz meteor What install are you using? And how would you like to control this device? I believe it is possible, but need more information to help.

quartz meteor
#

I want to use my bt speaker like cast device

gentle eagle
#

I understand, what is your install?

quartz meteor
#

Hassio on rpi 3+

gentle eagle
#

Is your install close to the speaker you want to control? And is the speaker a new one (some have chromecast built in).

quartz meteor
#

Dunno i will check model number, but it have only bluetooth so i dont think it have chrome cast

gentle eagle
#

That's fine, I don't need the specific model. If it only has bluetooth that answers that question. Is your RPI 3 close to the speaker?

quartz meteor
#

Its samsung R550

#

Yes it is

#

2 meters max

gentle eagle
#

It does not seem like there is a solution to directly use Hassio to do this as it does not use the bluetooth libraries to connect (from what I have read). My recommendation would be to buy either a Chromecast or Chromecast Audio (have to get the audio from Ebay or something similar). The chromecast can connect to the extra HDMI in on the speaker and control it from there. Sorry I could not find a better solution...

quartz meteor
#

So it is kinda impossible, because it have only one hdmi input which i use for my pc

#

Well, thanks for your time anyway

gentle eagle
#

Does it have an AUX port? Cause the chromecast audio can connect to that.

quartz meteor
#

Yes it does

#

But i dont think it will change source automatically

#

I think i will buy new speaker :D

civic kraken
#

You can probably do some trickery with Universal music player integration

#

Also check if there's some add-on for that

quartz meteor
#

But still via bluetooth right?

civic kraken
#

Yes, you'll need something that actually works with the BT on your machine though. So if there's no add-on, then you'll probably need another bluetooth device you can control and then use the universal music player integration to control that device

Recommendation for a water/leak detector that works well/easily with HA?

#

Our washing machine drains into a utility sink. Occasionally something like a sock plugs up the drain in the sink causing it to overflow and make a huge mess.

I'm thinking if I had a smart water detector and a smart plug, I could setup an automation that kills the smart plug, killing the washer when water is detected.

So that's where all the socks go

Hi all!
I've installed the ha-wyzeapi integration through HACS
https://github.com/JoshuaMulliken/ha-wyzeapi

I have some Wyze bulbs on my network that show up in entities and also as lights on the lovelace dashboard.
I'd like to add them to some automations, but for some reason they don't show up under devices.
I've Googled a ton, trying to find how to add an entity to the device list, but I can't find anything that explains exactly how to do that.
I'm sure that it just because I don't understand the terminology well enough, or maybe I need to add the wyze integration to the yml config, but I'm not sure where to start.

I apologize for the likely very basic question, but if someone could point me in the right direction I don't mind reading docs and figuring it out myself.

@dim venture I think it has to do with it being on WiFi and not hard wired. I know that through the LG app the tv will be disconnected if it is turned off. So I don’t think the WIFI signal stays connected during standby or off mode. Try hardwired

#

But through WiFi, I experience the same results

#

Btw, my work around for this is to power the tv through the chromcast and then do whatever I might need to to the tv (change HDMI, etc)

gloomy spoke
#

@dim venture Hmm, works for me

#

My TV is connected via Ethernet, though

dim venture
#

I have it hardwiered as well as wirelessly, and using the wiered connection for host and broadcast, but I needed to turn on wifi for it to respond at all

so I don't know reallyt

#

You don’t add entities to devices. Some integrations won’t show up in the device list and you need to control them based on their entities

twilit oracle
#

Is it possible to control an entity via an automation? Entity doesn't seem to be one of the action types

gloomy spoke
#

Of course

#

All of my automations are based on entities

#

I don’t use the UI, though

#

You start with a service and pass the entity as data

#

It looks like it’s backward from the way device automations are done

#

What are you trying to do?

twilit oracle
#

Ahhh, I see it now.
You can select Call Service as an action type when setting up an automation in the UI, and then select light.turn_on as the service.
My problem was that I assumed it needed to be defined as a device in order to control it using an automation.

gloomy spoke
#

Yes, you got it

drifting ember
#

yeah from my understanding (which is limited) you don't control devices you control entities

gloomy spoke
#

Device automations are pretty new

twilit oracle
#

Thanks so much for that @gloomy spoke, I realize I'm doing things the pleb way by not editing the yaml itself 😅

gloomy spoke
#

The UI allows you to control devices. It’s new, and not intended for manual editing

drifting ember
#

@twilit oracle LOL everything seems to be moving away from yaml

#

@gloomy spoke is that why I have buttons and the sonoff showing in my lovelace?

#

instead of just the sonoff?

twilit oracle
#

The sad part is that I'm a software engineer. I just don't want to write any semblance of code on the weekend, haha

gloomy spoke
#

You can do most of what you need to do in the UI now

drifting ember
#

@gloomy spoke I wasn't sure if that was because of the firmware upgrade or the HA upgrade I did

#

kinda did both around the same time

gloomy spoke
#

I don’t see the connection between this discussion and your Sonoffs

drifting ember
#

I am probably only making a random connection in my head then

gloomy spoke
#

Kinda feels that way 🙂

drifting ember
#

entirely possible

#

I just took a peek

#

binary_sensor.frontlamp_button1 and switch.frontlamp

#

is what I meant but now I see it's a damn sensor

#

I didn't see both before I only saw switch.frontlamp previously

#

so clearly me making shit up in my head to ask about

glossy prism
#

@drifting ember YAML is only being phased out for certain types of integrations. YAML is here to stay for automations, scripts, etc.

drifting ember
#

@glossy prism when I first got on HA yaml was the only way LOL

#

but I'm not complaining

#

I like more things to be able to be done in the UI

#

more "end" user friendly

Is there an article that points to devices that are compatible/best with HA?

drifting ember
#

compatible I'm sure but best is always relative

gloomy spoke
#

which ones have built-in integrations is a good place to start

drifting ember
#

@gloomy spoke might even help if we knew what kind of devices @mint edge means, rather than an entire list

gloomy spoke
#

sure, a non-specific answer to a vague question

#

I guess let me restart. I am beginning this journey and have no idea how to tell what devices might be compatible. Do I just search the brand to see if there are integrations ? Or what is the best way to check?

Sort of a meta question - how does everyone power their DIY devices? I've got so many ESPHome devices running LEDs, hooked up to sensors, etc that I'm running out of discreet mains/USB outlets to power them. I don't want wires running visibly towards the underside of the kitchen cabinets, for example. This is definitely a first world problem, but it's one I'd like to do better!

cursive flax
#

I've done that in a few places with some low-powered devices. But it doesn't work well for LEDs that need a bit more oomph. I guess I may just have to have a wire running up from the splashback towards the underside of the cabinetry.

#

That's a good price for a 6-port 60w hub though

cursive flax
#

I'm also seriously considering cannibalizing the ceiling light in the pantry to power some shelving LEDs. I suspect that's very much against building code though. It's the only source of power in there.

drifting ember

is there a bulb in there?

#

you could get a bulb socket adapter

Is that a thing? I have never heard of that

Just googled it, wow - nice tip

is the general consensus that Aqara sensors (contact and motion) are the best value/price/reliability to integrate into HA? Or are there others worth looking at? I am currently wi-fi devices only because I haven't really explored zigbee or z-wave, but i have a big old house and am running in to range issues with the Wyze sensors I've been tinkering with, so starting to see value in building a mesh network. I'm starting with door and window sensors and wondering what makes the most sense to put into HA. Through searching I always see Aqara but always have a hard time making that initial decision.

Looking for advice about a device to buy? Remember to provide guidance on:

  • Which country you're in
  • What your budget is
  • What protocols you prefer (eg Zigbee, WiFi, Z-Wave)
  • Any features you want (such as power monitoring, dimming, etc)
fossil plover
#

yea I'm looking for more general advice, so apologies for not saying that. I live in USA and am working to build a security system in a house from 1895 with thick walls and old wires/pipes everywhere. I'm looking for help choosing zwave or zigbee, and then choosing which contact and motion sensors to buy. Cheap is ok but affordability+reliability is preferred. I have 3 doors needing contact sensors and then either 7 windows w sensors or 3 motion sensors to cover them instead. i'm savvy w tech and have been running HA for 4+ years but not really making the best use of it beyond a centralized controller for wifi devices and monitoring. just now starting to learn about zigbee and zwave, which is what brought me here.

#

because it's an old house and wifi devices are suffering from range issues, I'm learning that zigbee or zwave will make that easier since they're mesh, but am still looking for advice on choosing protocol and devices. I've been pointed to the HUSBZB-1 since it's both protocols, but obviously I'd prefer to choose one so it strengthens

gritty zinc
#

What's the construction of the interior walls like?

fossil plover
#

everything inside is plaster but the back door is part of an addition, so there's an exterior wall the signal needs to get through

#

there's an open doorway there but the Wyze sensors stopped working when trying to connect to my server, which is at the front of my house

#

im considering adding a raspi4 that's on the second floor and more central, but thinking i can skip that if i get a good mesh working

gritty zinc
#

Definitely sounds like you're on the right track looking at a mesh network then. However, you've only mentioned getting sensors... with ZigBee (and I assume it's similar for Z-Wave), there are 3 classes of device: co-ordinators (one per mesh, can be a hub or a USB stick), routers (powered devices capable of relaying messages) and end devices (battery-powered devices like sensors).

#

If you're covering a large-ish house and contending with solid walls, you'll definitely need to include routers as part of your mesh. This can be additional USB sticks with the right firmware or something like a smart socket.

fossil plover
#

yea the walls have space in between but they're 3/8" plaster on both sides, and there are a lot of them to get through

#

from back to front there's that exterior, a kitchen, and then 3 more walls til the server

gritty zinc
#

To give you an idea of what it looks like in practise, this is my mesh for a 3 bedroom house: http://prntscr.com/tty3v7. Red is the co-ordinator, blue are routers, yellow are sensors.

which is next to my router

#

gritty zinc

#

Gives you an excuse to start controlling things in all those rooms 😉

fossil plover
#

haha my wife thanks you 😂

#

everything right now are tplink switches but for this security system i definitely need to expand to zigbee

#

or zwave

#

do you have thoughts on how to choose between zigbee and zwave? and then how to choose a sensor brand? or just get the HUSBZB-1 stick and some aqara sensors and see how that goes...?

gritty zinc
#

A lot of it's going to come down to budget and availability. Aqara are popular because they're cheap and readily available, whilst still being decent products.

#

There are some great Z-Wave products but they'll easily cost you 2-3x more than the equivalent ZigBee products.

#

One advantage of Z-Wave is that they run on their own frequency. ZigBee shares the 2.4GHz band with WiFi... though I've had no issues yet.

#

There's a bunch of resources linked in the topics of most channels too.

fossil plover
#

cool thanks, i appreciate your help

@white mantle Don't ask to ask, just ask your question. Then people can answer when they're around.

When you do ask a question, try to provide as much background detail as possible. Ask yourself these questions first so that others don't have to:

  1. What version of the Home Assistant are you running? (remember, last isn't a version)
  2. What exactly are you trying to do that won't work?
  3. Is the problem uniform or erratic?
  4. What's the exact error message?
  5. When did it arise?
  6. What exactly don't you "get"?
  7. Can you share sample code, ideally with line errors where the error occurs?

It'll depend whether there's an integration that knows how to talk to it. WiFi is just the transport protocol, HA would still need to understand the communication protocol.

Hi all, new Home Assistant user here. I am a bit confused about how home assistant works. Any smart way to figure out if a door has been opened from one side? I want to turn on the lights when I get home but with a door sensor the lights would turn on even when I'm leaving. The only thing I could think of was to use the door sensor together with a motion sensor and if motion is detected inside just before the door sensor is triggered then don't turn on the lights. Any other ideas?

gritty zinc
#

Motion sensors aren't the only form of presence detection but the idea will be the same:

  • door opens while someone's home = leaving
  • door opens while no-one's home = returning
#

Motion sensors won't know who's leaving or returning, so device-based trackers may be more helpful here.

Yeah I realize localization works fine as well, but was wondering if someone had a simple solution that could work

I wonder if there's a sensor that fires when you touch metal - conductivity sensor?

#

Could install it on the inside handle

#

I'm probably not using the right words

gritty zinc
#

You could just hook your mains up to the handle. That'd probably trip a few fuses when you touch it.

#

If you're going to use motion sensors on both sides, it just means you have to consider situations where there's motion detected on both.

past canyon
#

Yeah can't install a motion sensor outside

One motion sensor inside will do

#

I hope this is the right forum.

gritty zinc
#

They're grey because their status is unknown. One of the downsides of MQTT is that if it's not used properly, it has no memory of old messages.

#

You'll need to see if your devices can send their states using the 'retain' flag so that HA can still find the messages after a restart. Otherwise it'll wait until it receives the next message (after you restart your Sonoff devices).

hello. Are there any slave devices that have several inputs and outputs? For example, I want to automate something, that needs controls and also has numerous sensors, like temperature.

#

and I prefer zigbee

I have a pair of Shelly 2.5 that randomly shut off the relay. They are MQTT controlled. Could HA have a role in this?

QQ -- are the smartthings sensors/motion supports by HA? I'm making the switch soon and want to know if I have to change any of them out.

gritty zinc
#

Whether it'll support them depends on how you want to integrate them. For devices that use a hub, you'll want to check the integrations list to see if your hub is supported. For ZigBee devices in general, most of the popular devices are supported without a hub if you use the appropriate USB stick (see #zigbee-archived's topic).

brittle cove
#

Do you have the smartthings hub?

gritty zinc
#

No, I don't.

Was really asking Shyatic 🙂

gritty zinc

I know 😉

@cunning nymph Unless you're trying to avoid the temporary dimmer issue with the OZW Beta, which should be resolved in HA 0.114, you can usually change the transition steps and ramp time with config parameters in the device. So rather than setting a transition to make them instantly come on, you can just tell the device that's what you want and let it do it for you

Not sure if this is the right room, but here goes. I've replaced my Xaomi MiBox 3 with a FireTV 4k. I was able to start an m3u8 on the Mibox using domain media_extractor, service play_media and then this payload {"entity_id":"media_player.mibox3","media_content_id":"https://supersecret.com/myplaylist.m3u8","media_content_type":"video"} . I tried changing just the entity_id to my firetv device name. I'm trying this in dev tools services. I do not get an error but the video does not start. I am able to control the firetv from HASS so I know the connection works. I can launch/stop apps at will but cannot get the video to stream. Anyone know what might be the cause or if I need to use a different method?

Is this the best place for this?

hello Everyone!
is there somebody here maybe who has experience with Homematic systems and how they can be integrated into home assistant?

cunning nymph
#

@gloomy spoke oh, I'm still on 0.113. That might be my issue 😀

gloomy spoke
#

there is a known issue with dimmers and OZW Beta with <0.114

#

so just upgrade and be happy

cunning nymph
#

excellent

ripe pond
#

what is 0.114 supposed to fix with ozw and dimmers?

#

@gloomy spoke is it supposed to fix the bug with the state reverting?

gloomy spoke
#

yes, but that's really that the transition is super-long

#

so it's in teh middle of transitioning for a long time and appears to flip the state back

#

it confused the hell out of me at first too

#

you tell it to turn on, which takes 5 mins, and the switch doesn't behave as expected during that time. And your light doesn't turn on as expected

ripe pond
#

@gloomy spoke Are you saying the state should eventually update? If I can get my state in the UI to match the actual state of the lights, then toggling the control in the UI will work to control the actual light, but the status will flip back. Even 10 minutes later it’s still wrong.

gloomy spoke
#

it did for me, but ymmv

#

it surprised me because I flipped the switch to turn on the light, gave up when it didn't seem to work, and then came back later to see that the light was on 🙂

ripe pond
#

My lights respond, but I just gave it 80 minutes and my status is still wrong. Ugh.

Can someone recommend me some dimmable RGB bulbs that are affordable and not terrible?

Is anyone here using an ONVIF PTZ compatible wi-fi indoor camera and want to suggest me a model to buy? I'm looking for a wi-fi indoor camera that I can see and control (in terms of PTZ) from Home Assistant using the onvif module.

Cheaper is better 🙂

anyone using Harmony Hubs?

I currently have two Shelly 2.5 that randomly shut off the relays. I like them a lot but will have to remove if I cant root cause the problem. And Shelly users that might have experience with these?

Yeah the forum or reddit is probably better than this channel

Is threre a way to ssh into rpi with home assistant using visual studio code on a pc? I'd like to do that so I can create my own html page to run next to home assistanty

gloomy spoke
#

there's a lot to unpack there, as they say

#

second, if you're using Home Assistant OS, you won't be able to build your own parallel website

Not sure which install you're using? If you have system_health enabled you can check Configuration -> Info, or see the following.

  • If you're using HassOS, flashed an image, or booted a VM with an image you're using #330990055533576204

  • If you installed Linux and then ran a script to install HA and have add-ons then you have #330944238910963714

  • If you're running docker commands or use a Docker manager and have no add-ons then you have #449717345808547842

  • Finally, if you use pip to install or upgrade you have #551864459891703809

Having difficulty chosing an install method? See this blog post for guidance.

I am trying to find a humidity sensor for my home, does anyone have any recomendations ?

drifting ember
#

do you have any sonoff devices?

#

you can add sensors to those easily

last briar
#

no i am quite new to all this

#

i will check it out thanks

drifting ember
#

DHT11 does temp and humidity

last briar
#

Yeah i was just looking at that one 🙂

drifting ember
#

@last briar what devices do you have?

last briar
#

at the moment i only have light bulbs

#

i am quite new to all this stuff but i am open to learning

drifting ember
#

well get a ~$5 sonoff basic, flash it with tasmota and get a DHT11

#

that's a cheap way to mess around

#

but it's mains voltage so .... danger Will Robinson

last briar
#

does flashing the sonoff require a soldering iron? i don't have one at the moment

drifting ember
#

ahhhhh it doesn't "require" one but having one is useful

#

if you have a USB FTDI and some jumpers you could do it, it's just annoying

little sentinel

and i was wondering if i put it in a corner of a room what would the the field of view?

I'm wondering if its more a left to right motion and not a left to right up and down motion

It has a 170 degree field of view,

little sentinel

left to right, right?
