@sour shadow when I press scan on zigbee2mqtt after 5 seconds it turns off and write finished touchlink scan, is it normal?

Why are you trying to do Touchlink?

@plucky garden Discord isn't like IRC, you don't have to tag people on every response. Keep in mind that every time you tag somebody, they get a notification ping. That can very quickly become annoying and people may block you.

When using Discord's new Reply feature it defaults to pinging the person you reply to, click @ ON to @ OFF to stop this - on the right side of the compose bar.

Well, start by making sure it's near the coordinator or a router (mains powered device connected to the mesh)

@jolly narwhal yea sorry, seems to be fairly niche

it's fairly similar to a much more popular one by nordtronic

I've opened an issue on zigbee2mqtt, because it fails to interview (It's my understanding that should still work even if it's not in devices.js)

This morning zigbee2mqtt stopped working, I am trying to diagnose why but it seems the serial interface is been passed through: unlink("/dev/ttyZ2M"): Read-only file system Is the error I'm getting

Even trying the socat command directly in the docker I get: socat[2731] E unlink("/dev/ttyZ2M"): Read-only file system

nothing working so far

that ttyZ2M is a symlink right?

is it pointing correctly?

or a docker mapping

graceful canopy

Its a socat docker mapping over serial but it can't seem to create the file in /dev as it reports as a read only filesystem

I see this in top {socat.sh} /bin/bash /app/socat.sh /data/options.json fork

It seems it can no longer create /dev/ttyZ2M

I wonder if this is an issue with the addon?

(Deconz/Zigbee) Anyone that uses aqara sensors? I have the temp/humid/pressure ones. the one in the freezer went offline.. so i thought it was broken but as soon as i pressed the button it was online again. Now the frige one went offline. Same thing, i pressed it and bam.. online again. Is this a known issue? Do they go offline if they can't reach the server a while or some other reason?

dry fossil
#

The Aqara stuff isn't good at finding a new router if it has a bad connection. You should make a stronger network.

balmy ginkgo
#

Yeah i was wondering that, i did move the pi to my desk temporarily, A little closer actually but maybe for the signals a little harder to reach

mighty river
#

I've got a number of Aqara sensors and they seem to work fine. Don't run them in my freezers though. What I do have problems with is the Ikea lights/outlets (acting as routers) that sometimes goes offline (I'm guessing due the known low-level zigbee firmware bug that leaks memory). Which can cause the sensors that routes via them to have problems. A physical power off/on wakes them up again though. It almost never happened when I had few devices, but when I got over 30 or so it started happening more often. Eagerly awaiting firmware updates... ๐Ÿ™‚

analog ember
#

@balmy ginkgo Try pairing them at the location you are planning to place them, should help them in choosing the correct router from the start

balmy ginkgo
#

Oh they can be updated huh, nice.

analog ember
#

Don't believe the aqara sensors can be updated

balmy ginkgo
#

i only have 1 router though, but it is in the pi not extention cabled. So that would be my 1st step if it occurs again

analog ember
#

All the ikea tradfri stuff can

#

Always a good idea to use an usb extention cable, can to great things for your range & stability

#

If that still didn't add enough range for the sensors, try adding a router. Something like an ikea smart plug/signal repeater should work great

#

how can i measure the link quality of my cc2538 in my house? it's small, but there are doors and walls

sour shadow
#

Your choice of Zigbee integration should be telling you

thorny phoenix
#

that will be mqtt

sour shadow
#

Zigbee2MQTT creates sensors that include the LQI

thorny phoenix
#

so...i will walk with a sensor in the house

sour shadow
#

Well, that'd be the only way to map it, but the sensor probably won't change routes, so it won't give you the best results

dry fossil
#

Remember Zigbee is a mesh network. The more nodes you have, the stronger the mesh gets.

thorny phoenix
#

i can put cc2531 as a repeater?

dry fossil
#

It's not about point-to-point signal strength like WiFi.

#

Yes, the CC2531 can be a router if you flash it with the correct firmware.

thorny phoenix
#

oh...flash....headaches ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

dry fossil
#

But... you should probably use other devices as routers. Devices that do something else in addition to routing.

#

Smart outlets, smart switches, some smart bulbs.

#

When you have enough Zigbee devices, you'll end up with at least one router in each room and signal won't be an issue.

thorny phoenix
#

oh...i can move an ikea bulb from living to kitchen....

#

nice idea

golden vessel
#

in ZHA, is there any difference between doing Group Binding trough the Device interface, or adding a device to a group trough the Groups UI?

amber gull
#

Yes ๐Ÿ˜€

golden vessel
#

tell me more @amber gull ๐Ÿค”

amber gull
#

๏ฟผ๏ฟผ at the protocol level that's a fundamental difference between binding and group membership๏ฟผ

#

Binding instructs the device to send cluster commands to the bound device or group

#

Group membership for devices will vary by implemention

#

So perhaps a remote may default to sending commands to its own group, but I don't believe that's defined as a protocol default or recommendation๏ฟผ

amber gull
#

No. Out to in, typically. One way

golden vessel
#

for example, I binded the LightLink cluster of a Lightbulb to the group 0x0 (which is the one IKEA remotes send commands to), and it made the remove control the light

#

so the light is receiving commands from the bound group

amber gull
#

๐Ÿง

#

That is not the way ๐Ÿ˜

#

But yes, that would work

#

Depending on stack implemention. You are using it in reverse of the designed intent imho

golden vessel
#

but, if it should only be for for device -> group, who's on the receiving end?

#

devices that are member of the group?

amber gull
#

Yes.

#

it's really designed for a direct virtual connection between a device and another device or group. typically when a single device needs to send information directly to a number of other devices

#

So in your case it would probably be more efficient to just place the bulb in the group. splitting hairs though. but that is how the protocol is designed in my opinion.

#

In your use case you are storing the information in the binding table of the bulb

#

And that will be harder to manage ( much more so with ZHA ) Then the group membership

#

there might be edge cases though where it could buy you something

#

Binding lets you essentially filter by endpoint and cluster

golden vessel
#

I was just testing it out and wanting to understand the difference between group binding and group membership. I don't really need it atm

amber gull
#

Group membership equals broadcast frame is received am I a member of this group?๏ฟผ

golden vessel
#

sรณ, the ideia is: receivers would be members of the group, and senders would be bound to the group?

amber gull
#

Yes

golden vessel
#

makes sense!

#

what about direct device-device bindings?

amber gull
#

They work the same way, just dst device is nwk of the single device. Dstadrrmode may be unicast

#

in our home automation use cases, the main benefit here is the coordinator and automation engine don't need to be online

#

Binding and even group membership you are also at mercy of the implementation

#

Aqara wired switches for example, don't include out clusters to allow direct binding other lights ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

golden vessel
#

I was also now trying to bind an Ikea remote to a bulb, but it doesn't seem to work

#

I haven't checked the logs though

amber gull
#

With debug you should see binding success

#

No UI feedback or mgmt currently

golden vessel
#

maybe they can only bind to a single thing? And since it is already bound to group 0x0, they won't bind to bulb?

amber gull
#

That is true for some. I'd have to go look on IKEA. definitely true on the Phillips hue remotes

#

IKEA is also a bit screwy as they are all ZLL groups under the hood

golden vessel
#

yeah. but since I was testing it with an ikea bulb, it should be fine

dire night
#

Hi guys, first time here for me. Something weird occured yesterday. Two of my motion sensors (Xiaomi Aqara) just stopped working in the same hour (at least, last message received was half an hour apart). They still said to have resp. 91 and 97 percent battery and 55 and 105 linkquality. I didn't buy or install them at the same time. Also wasn't working on HA at that moment.. I have other Zigbee devices, working just fine (they are not motion sensors, but door sensors..) I'm using Zigbee2MQTT. Someone that has any clue what might have happend, or where I could search next? It really puzzles me

#

One of the motion sensors was already in use for about 2 years, the other one for about 1.5 yrs.

dry fossil
#

Common issue with Aqara.

dire night
#

Ah thanks, maybe it's just a glitch with Aqara then. Still, two at the same time losing connection, one is really close to my antenna, the other is a about 5 meters away.

dry fossil
#

It doesn't matter. If they were both using that router and that router disappeared for a while, the Aqara ones might not recover.

#

Other things are better at re-routing.

dire night
#

Is there a way to easily reconnect them? Or should I go through the pairing process again?

dry fossil
#

Just tap the button once and they'll try to reconnect. If that doesn't work, re-pair them.

golden vessel
#

@amber gull just tried binding with the IKEA remote to IKEA light while sniffing traffic.
It replies with "GREAT SUCCESS!" to the bind command, binding clusters On/Off and LevelCtrl. But then it still only sends the broadcast messages as usual. No direct messages to the bulb. Also, when I unbind the bulb, the remote replies with NoEntry. So I guess they don't support it

amber gull
#

Did you try shaking it?

#

I know I have a few of the two buttons directly bound without issue -- which model are you using?

golden vessel
#

shaking? Lol pressing yes

#

its the two button one

#

are you sure they are binding directly to bulb? or to group?

amber gull
#

To a group, I believe

golden vessel
#

ah

#

that works

golden vessel
#

"and cannot be bound to a device" ok...

mighty river
#

Sorry asking again but maybe now there is someone who knows how to re-add a device with zigbee2mqtt. The devices were force deleted by me. If I want to pair nothing happens. Removing the battery doesn't help. I force deleted three devices and all have the same problem.

sour shadow
#

Check the Z2M log file to see what's going on

#

Note that a force remove will only remove the device from the database. Until this device is factory reset, it will still hold the network encryption key and thus is still able to communicate over the network!

#

So, factory reset it ๐Ÿ˜‰

mighty river
#

How can I factory reset? Its an OSRAM smart plug, Aqara Window sensor and an Aqara movement sensor?

simple sentinel
#

I would google each device. Sometimes the pairing instructions on the zigbee2mqtt supported devices page will be enough

mighty river
#

okay thanks

I think z2m docs have instructions for all those devices you mention @mighty river

hey guys. After an auto supervisor upgrade (2021.02.5) , zha is not working properly anymore. I am trying to understand why the zigbee2mqtt addon is failing to create a socat device under /dev/ in the container. I would love some guidance, as I have been working on this for two days. Essentially the file system appears to be read only yet the socat device used to be created without issue.

This is the error 2021/02/10 20:56:16 socat[503644] E unlink("/dev/ttyZ2M"): Read-only file system

if you have kernel panics from usb passthrough, probably you have usb issues in your machine...

and that is probably related to your new issues using socat

graceful canopy

I don't think it is related, I tried socat on a raspberry pi as well, the issue seems to be in the addon. I believe the addon has been reconfigured to make /dev read-only preventing the instantiation of the serial device.

Good morning! I am seeing conflicting reports on using ZHA_Map custom integration, with some mentions of it being implemented directly in HASS in version 1.0? I am on the latest version (2021.2.2) and don't see it mentioned anywhere?

Nevermind, I'm just dumb, it's in the configuration area for the integration.

rotund wave
graceful canopy
#

@golden vessel Thanks that works, currently the default configuration uses /dev. I have amended the github issue, as it should be pointing to a writable location by default. (It seems /dev was made read-only in an update and this was overlooked or for some reason a configuration change occurred). Thanks for the advice, everything is working as expected now ๐Ÿ˜

Is ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT the preferred method for zigbee devices? My concern with ZHA is that if I shut down HASS or the server it's running on, stuff will stop working (though that is the case with my motion sensors already, I'm concerned about moving my Hue lights).

Really depends on the day and how much tinkering I'm doing on either HA or the server hardware it's running on, though I would say it's probably up 90-95% of the time.

I'll have to look into the remote idea. The hue remotes can't talk to groups of lights?

golden vessel
#

don't you have any kind of physical control over the lights? What if Hue server is unavailable or your internet goes down?

#

I don't know about hue remotes. I've only tested ikea ones, and with those you need to:

  • create a zigbee group and add the light(s) to it
  • bind the remote to the group

They cannot bind directly to a single device.

opaque thicket
#

No, I just use the analog light switches (apartment life or I'd update them), and relied on the bridge and/or home assistant for the motion sensors. The hue app and homekit connect directly to the bridge so the remote server or internet being down has never been a problem.

# opaque thicket Youโ€™re correct, nothing would work anyways. Maybe Iโ€™ll just move the motion sens...

Loss of power for longer periods of time can make some devices lose its connection completly so you might have to repair if zha route (aqara)... I used hue essentials with deconz before and was able to do many of the basic automations through the rest api so that if ha was down then the basic function would still work as it was not using HA.... that's why hue works well for people, you set it and forget it where HA you are going to mess around as you learn

brittle current
#

Question, I dont know much about zigbee, but I do know you have to register a device to a hub when it is installed (SmartThings, etc). I finally got Raspbee and deconz working, but it doesnt ever see anything. To get all my lights and switches into HA without going through SmartThings, will I have to remove the light from SmartThings (via the remove tool) before it can be added or seen with deconz? I currently have Philips Hue and SmartThings hubs along with the newly installed Home Assistant. I also use Alexa a lot to control the SmartThings lights. Is it best in the long run to try and move everything possible over to HA and ditch the other hubs?

No

I have deconz installed and running, it does (after messing with boot config) see the raspbee. I see the "Controller" on the deconz webpage. I guess I need to dig a little more into it to see where I go from there. I was just expecting to see other devices seen.

@gritty frigate Don't ask to ask, just ask your question. Then people can answer when they're around.

When you do ask a question, try to provide as much background detail as possible. Ask yourself these questions first so that others don't have to:

  1. What version of the Home Assistant are you running? (remember, last isn't a version)
  2. What exactly are you trying to do that won't work?
  3. Is the problem uniform or erratic?
  4. What's the exact error message?
  5. When did it arise?
  6. What exactly don't you "get"?
  7. Can you share sample code, ideally with line errors where the error occurs?

I would like to keep my pi available for runnning other stuff as well.

I've got this Philips Hue motion sensor that drops off ZHA (ZZH stick) every 3-5 days or so. The symptom is hard to explain: the device goes into "unknown" state, then comes back with a reading, and gets stuck in that. For example: continuous motion is reported in the past 3 hours.

rebooting the device (battery out > in) doesn't help. Removing & adding it back onto ZHA will provide one single reading and get back to that state again for some reason

resetting the device completely and re-adding solves it, but weird that one would have to do that every X days

austere patio
gritty frigate
#

yes, that's what's happening

austere patio
#

On its own though

gritty frigate
#

it leaves, gets back on, reports one single sensor data, and leaves again - and from this point on, it looks like that ZHA is not registering the device as left properly, but it gets stuck in the interface

#

e.g. constantly detecting motion

#

for as long as I dont remove, reset the device and add it back up again

#

I thought the device was wrong or something, but it doesn't do that when connected to a Philips Hue HUb

#

so that can't be it really

austere patio
#

Well the device itself seems to be indicating to the network that it is leaving

#

It's not just dropping off the network

that makes sense, yeah

austere patio
#

No idea why it would do that though

gritty frigate

became unavailable: 5:01:31 PM - 1 hour ago
detected occupancy: 5:01:27 PM - 1 hour ago

#

and ever since 5:02 PM it's reporting constant occupancy

well, by HA at least - while we know that the device left the network (whatever the reason is for that, but it did)

Network graphs like that have to re-evaluate the connections over many, many iterations to come up with a stable representation. If they did it all before rendering anything, it would introduce quite a delay before you saw anything.

Also nothing is shown in my logs. So the on/off trigger isn't show there. Automations are still working fine on motions, but also not setting states in HA

I have a Sonoff Bridge flashed with Tasmota and ZHA integration installed. I have a Sonoff button which I can see on listen to events 'zha_event'. I also have a Sonoff door sensor which I can see on the Tasmota console on the Sonoff Bridge but it it does not produce any events in the zha_event monitor.

#

Does HA treat the door sensor differently ie it doesn't use zha_event even though it send messages through the same bridge as the button?

I have a Mi Magic Cube (new) linked to my Conbee II. I seem not to get the rotate left and right working. The rest of the actions seems to work fine. I have checked the device to connect to the MI app and it works fine. I am on Conbee version 2.9.3. If I look at the deconz_event I don't see any events.

@edgy flume for me it shows up as binary sensor with IAS zone

#

Im not sure how to get started with ZHA's quirks and writing one for my devices. in particular i have tons of Tuya TS0505A and only on/off is working, zigbee2mqtt seems to fully support it. Would be someone interested in writing a quirk based off this - i'll sponsor it and would pay.

#

Want to move it forward of course to also give back to the community.

Good Morning!
I assume updating my conbee2 to the newest firmware manually is a bad idea? ๐Ÿ˜„
HA doesnt find zigbee devices anymore.

I'm migrating away from using a Hue hub over to Zigbee2MQTT. I've noticed that the literal hue on the color where in HA where I click is offset slightly. Like when I click where I click for red I get more of a magenta from my Hue bulbs. Has anyone else hit something similar?

I have some Gledopto RGB+CCT LEDs that previously I had paired with my Hue hub, just moved them off over to Zigbee2MQTT. Most of these are recessed down lights but also a couple of LED strips. When I try to create a scene in the UI providing a value for color_temp through the slider the LED turns on the correct warm/cool LEDs and as far as I can tell switches off the RGB LED. However after I save the scene through the UI, the light switches off the warm/cool LEDs and then fires up the RGB LED to show what feels like the closest value on the color wheel.

#

This is also the case for when I turn on the scene, it'll only turn on the RGB LED.

#

If I edit the scene manually and remove hs_color, rgb_color, and xy_color, the scene turns on the correct CCT LED and not the RGB LED, however whenever the lights turn on they flicker before hitting the correct temp/brightness.

winter mist
#

Ah ok, I should leave xy_color alone.

If I remove and reinstall zha will I have to re-pair all my devices and set everything up again?

fallow warren
#

I got some zigbee buttons that has to be paired close to the coordinator, so in my case the texas instruments CC2531. However this is in my shed, woould it be the same to pair it with a zigbee node with router functionality?

#

Or cna I go to my shed, pair it then go back where i want it?

simple sentinel
#

I've had devices where the instructions said to pair next to the coordinator but where I preferred to try next to where it was going to be used instead, for reasons.
It worked.

#

If your mesh can handle it, you might as well give it a try

#

or rather you will find out if your mesh can handle it

fallow warren
#

Thanks, I thought so. Yea I have tried a lot but i think its more a problem with my device, its a stupid ikea button that when i click the pair button it also clicks the button

simple sentinel
#

The other route is pair close to your coordinator, then press the range test button when you get back to where you want to use it

fallow warren
#

aha

simple sentinel
#

Ahh, I think that's basically the same as the button that ships with their window blinds

fallow warren
#

yea i think so

simple sentinel
#

I think I was able to pair it on location, but I am not sure

sour shadow
#

Pairing in place is always the best thing to do, since the device then knows how to connect to the mesh. Some devices, like Xiaomi, won't reconnect if you move them out of range of the device they connected via

fallow warren
#

yea i guess il find out once i figure out this piece of shit button

Hey guys, my friend is planning to build a smart home using Home Assistant to my recommendation. We are planning on using Zigbee devices, which we obsivously need a hub for. I ve got the cheap CC2531 usb stick, which works quite well, but I wanna ask if there is something more simple to use which doesnt require flashing any firmware and would look nicer in the room than this ugly green antenna.

#

Any recommendations? Are there any other universal zigbee hub devices?

sour shadow
#

Well, depends on your choice of Zigbee integration...

wise sentinel
#

What do you mean? We are planning on controlling devices from different manufacturers.

obsidian sandalBOT

There are three Zigbee options with Home Assistant (regardless of how you install it). These are:

deCONZ is relatively stable and mature with its own UI (and Discord server). It can run in an add-on, in a Docker container, or natively. Only the ConBee range of sticks and RaspBee GPIO boards are support. Known working devices are documented, and how to request support for a new device is documented too (you can't add unsupported devices yourself).

zha is actively developed as part of Home Assistant Core, using the zigpy stack, the UI also being part of Home Assistant. The EmberZNet based sticks are recommended, but there are other options. There is no list of supported devices, as any standards compliant device should work. Devices that require extra support are listed, and adding unsupported devices is documented (you can't add unsupported devices yourself).

Zigbee2MQTT is very actively developed and can run in an add-on, in a Docker container, and natively. As of 1.15 has a native UI, and it also uses MQTT for control and configuration. It supports mostly TI based sticks, with the Zig-Ah-Zig-Ah! and Slaesh's sticks being recommended. The known working devices are well documented (which usually includes how to pair them so you don't have to find the manual), and adding unsupported devices is also documented.

โ˜๏ธ your choice of Zigbee integration ๐Ÿ˜‰

If you're using zha you get one set of options, Zigbee2MQTT another, and deCONZ another again
