See if you can try some other router. Also, try to "reconfigure" the device from the device screen. It may take a few attempts. If this process fails initially when you join the device to your network, the device won't report attribute changes (e.g. the current temperature).

Hi, I am looking for some advice for a new user. At the spur of the moment I bought an IKEA Vindstyrka yesterday, which apparently is a Zigbee device. Right now, I am running Home Assistant as a VM image, but I wanted to installed it on my Synology NAS, but no luck there. So I am looking for a device that can both

  1. Allow Vindstyrka to connect to HA
  2. Run a Home Assistant server 24/7.

Buy something CC2652 based. This list is a good one, both Tube and Electrolama have been proven to have excellent customer service. The current generation of EZSP sticks (see here for some) are also a good choice for ZHA.

Anything CC2530 or CC2531 based should be avoided - they're old, slow, and only suitable for a dozen or so devices. The Sonoff ZBbridge isn't advised since it uses WiFi (built in interference causing stability/reliability issues), and the HUSBZB-1 uses an older chipset so should be avoided.

Finally, the ConBee range are fine with deCONZ, but experience with ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT appears to be mixed.

sour shadow
#

Tube sells network connected Zigbee coordinators

#

Then where you run HA doesn't matter

hidden canopy
#

So a CC2652/CC1352 USB device would solve 1 above (connecting the device to HA), but it does not allow running HA server, or does it?

sour shadow
#

No, it's purely about Zigbee

#

There's no one device (other than the Yellow, but just don't) that is a PC and has a Zigbee radio

hidden canopy
#

haha, i take it i should not ask about the yellow

sour shadow
#

Using a network connected coordinator allows you to run HA anywhere you want - VM, NAS, toaster

#

The Yellow is a Pi4 (and almost impossible to buy), there's better hardware for the same price

hidden canopy
#

in their infinite wisdom synology dropped support for docker on my NAS, so I want to find another host

sour shadow
#

VM?

hidden canopy
#

i run a vm on my windows machine right now, works well, but not anything i will have running 24/7

sour shadow
hidden canopy
#

i have a raspberry pi 2b which i understand is too weak

#

ok, so i will get a zigbee device from the list you shared

#

and solve the hosting of the ha server separately

#

many thanks!

median raft
#

I'm also just getting set up and would like to run this on a Pi or something, but they don't seem to be all that available at the moment so I'd like to run it on an M1 Mac Mini instead (probably running in a docker container) - I looked around various of these pages to see if these sticks are compatible with apple silicon but didn't see anything one way or the other... anyone got any war/success stories?

#

I have HA happily running in Docker on that machine already, I guess I'm just wondering if the USB sticks are compatible with the apple silicon hardware

sour shadow
#

The sticks don't care about the CPU in your computer

#

I would hope/expect so, but it's not always the case

the serial connection is over tcp

river scarab
median raft
# molten linden the serial connection is over tcp

ok I'm a little new to this but that sounds like it means that instead of taking my Mac Mini and plugging a zigbee coordinator USB stick into it, I could take a network connected coordinator, plug it into a switch, then tell my HA install to use it? It sounds like this device is taking the zigbee network events and forwarding them over TCP to some client(s), so I assume there's some latency in this (though if it's push/socket vs polling then it's probably negligible). Am I on the right track?

molten linden
#

yes. there is no noticeable latency. as the serial connection is very low bandwidth, and is constantly connected. In a way its like using socat on a remote host to forward a serial port. in the case of my products they use an ethernet connected esp32 to run the serial over tcp.

median raft
#

gotcha, cool

#

so I guess you just need one of these per zigbee network, but you could also flash them as routers if you had a PoE switch and a place with no AC power but wanted to extend the zigbee network? I have a PoE switch in my attic and ethernet cable is much lighter and safer than running romex so this would actually be quite useful if it can indeed do that

#

I plan to have around 100 zigbee bulbs, 50 zigbee switches, ~50 door sensors, ~100 misc other zigbee devices on this network: my Hue systems are not scaling well as I add more devices - how does this thing perform with a few hundred nodes?

molten linden
#

One coordinator per network. Yes you can flash any of the coordinators as routers but the ethernet connection would not be used other than for power in the case of the PoE version

median raft
#

yea makes sense

molten linden
#

there are people who used them without problem with 100+ devices. I used one and hover around 140-150 connected devices.

median raft
#

cool, thanks for the answers. So now I understand what Tinkerer meant by using one of those - the fact that my CPU arch is apple silicon is irrelevant if I also use a network connected coordinator, as all the Mac now needs to be able to do is speak is TCP ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป

molten linden
#

I have a test set up of HA running in UTM on a M1 mac mini, and it runs the natively on the M1, and flies. (off topic)

median raft
#

I see pros and cons - it's nice that you can hot-swap the HA instance if the Mac dies (just boot up the docker container elsewhere and feed it the config), but it's also another thing that can break (hopefully also fairly hot-swappable) ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ seems like there are cases where the NCC is the preferred option (the PoE cases for example), but in my case it probably doesn't matter much as the USB stick should be compatible with my M1

#

I think the key for me is probably the performance as I want to support hundreds of devices with significantly sub-second latencies - I guess the USB sticks must have something similar to the esp32 doing the same job translating zigbee events (except just translating to USB instead of TCP), so that could be a bottleneck for those devices

#

one other thing that comes to mind is that I would have more freedom to locate a network connected coordinator centrally in the house - I'm probably overthinking this but a centrally located coordinator plus ethernet to a HA server might outperform a USB stick directly connected to the HA server if that server is located at the edge of the network. Maybe that makes a difference if there are hundreds of nodes in the zigbee network ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

that's too sad :/ The workaround i have found online is to connect to the lamp via bluetooth from the smartphone-app, create a few gradient-scenes, and then there is some command i beliebe with that you can enable those scenes via HA... But custom settings via HA i haven't found yet sadly x_x

I have 30m cat5e that im using at the moment.. and my ZigBee drops out maybe once a day something like that.. I have to replug the device and reload zha

#

so I am going to try replacing that cable with cat 7

because it's triple shielded and has thicker conductors etc.. less loss in theory

if that turns out to be a waste I'll use it for something else like a 10gb nic

USB over twisted pair presumably has different performance / loss characteristics when compared with ethernet I don't know

Hello! I have bought a frient Motion Sensor Pro and I've managed to add it to ZHA (using SkyConnect dongle) and I can manually read values from it under Manage Zigbee Device, but it does not provide any entities, is there anything I can do to create entities manually and bind the to the correct value on the sensor?

Is there a way to enable Automatic Re-send in some way? I have some devices that are far away and it's kind of a 50/50 if they will hear the command, so I find myself adding 5x commands with 1 sec wait between being sent in my automations for them, and that seems to work fine. But it would be pretty nice if there was an option to have Home Assistant just continuously re-send previous orders if they're not received, but I can't seem to find an option for this. Does anyone know if there is, or if there's maybe some plugin or something that does this?

weird thing is that I have about 20 similar devices but only a handful of them exhibit this behavior

#

it's poluting the zigbee network with useless messages. is there a way to fix this ?

The solution to that is to add some router devices between the "far away" devices and your coordinator

I already have put a pretty big one on it. Everything works perfectly if I just add 5x do-wait actions in my automations, just a shame there's no easier built-in way of doing this software wise, seems like it would be useful. In my mind it makes sense for HA to have a set of like "wished states", and for it then to continuously send out signals on repeat until the real states match that.

Anyways, thanks for the help

Hello, I am trying to set up a smart temperature automation.

#

Devices:
zigbee switch [Connected to a Infared heating panel]
multiple zigbee thermometers
Ikea styrbar

What I would like to do is being able to use the Ikea styrbar for temperature control [set: Set temperature to *C [in 1C increments, min/max 18-25C], meaning the room will heat to said temperature]

So if I press Bright-UP. set temperature goes up with 1.
if I press bright-down set temperature goes down with 1

Combined with a automation, I want to be able to heat the room to *C. with the Ikea switch acting like a override. for the set temperature in the automation.

I want to control the temperature in such a way that I can always override it trough a smart button

#

Crap, ok, so I probably DO have interference. Now the question is, which is easier, changing the wifi channel or the zigbee channel. I think I'll try the former as that shouldn't mess with my zigbee network, and the wifi devices should be smart enough to figure it out.

Changing WiFi is easier

And unless you use a high-temp coin cell, the battery iteself will generally only be rated to withstand 70c

I'm looking for a cheap zigbee LED light strip controller, is Gledopto good? I don't need addressable segments

#

If so, is it worth getting the 2ID/"mix" model? It's not clear to me whether or not HA (ZHA with Sonoff dongle) supports this RGB with white mode

#

And when buying a power supply, do I just have to look at the voltage of the strip and get one that matches?

Thank you. What is the reason not to go with EFR32MG21 chips? They seem to be cheaper and newer from what I have seen on amazon

im redoing my whole setup from an haos install with a nortek and going to a new haos with a sonoff zigbee and a 800 zwave

my issue was that i was on channel 15 on the old ha and had issues with my wifi, it slowed it down potentially and had major reliability issues with zigbee devices going dead often

Hey guys. I'm having trouble with my zigbee network and wanted to flash another Sonoff model ZBDongle-P as a router. I'm using the Smart RF Flasher. I've followed every instruction that I could find, but no matter what, the flash fails immediately and has an error. I've held down the boot button for 10 seconds, as I plugged it into the computer. I'm trying to follow the instructions from the links, but I don't know enough about cmd line to navigate to the correct folder. If I'm understanding correctly, I'm suppose to copy the dongle hex file to the srecord bin folder, then in cmd line navigate to the srecord bin folder and run this command ```

.\srec_cat.exe "CC1352P2_CC2652P_launchpad_router_20221102.hex" -intel -o CC1352P2_CC2652P_launchpad_router_20221102.bin -binary```

Do I have the correct understanding and what do I type in the cmd line, to get from C:\ to the srecord bin folder?

Enable debug logging in ZHA and look for packet. @uncut sorrel is using Wireshark with a sniffer, which will log every packet, including retries, ACKs, polling, and so on. The ZigBee stick on its own only will expose a fraction of this to Z2M or ZHA.

The sensor works fine with the Abode alarm, but in HA itโ€™s always in the โ€œdetectedโ€ state. If I manually set the state in HA to โ€œoffโ€, the it shows as clear, and next time it detects movement, it stays in detected again.

My HA (latest version) is running on an Oracle VM on a windows desktop

Hi,
I migrated my ZHA network from sonoff dongle-e to skyconnect and it worked as expected.
Then I flashed a router firmware to the sonoff and plugged it in and connected it to the network.

Then I checked the visualization. The sonoff router is displayed as a rectangle and it has the device type coordinator. I cannot see the skyconnect in the visualization.
Why is the router seen as coordinator? Have I done anything wrong?
I was planning to improve my network, but now it seems that I have some kind of remote coordinator ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Hello everyone, I have an issue were some zigbee devices get stuck on a state at random times, like my aqara water leak sensor for some reason stuck on "leaking", my sonoff motion sensor stuck on "occupied", my aqara door sensor stuck on "closed" or sometimes "open" and they stay stuck untill I repair them back again.

All of these devices are in less than 2 meter distance from a router and have an average of 120 linkquality, what could be the issue?

Please ping me when answering, Thanks in advance

just download one from the current coordinator config page, the backups are in the zigbee.db

alternatively, flash the sonoff back to coord, use zigpy-cli to form a network, back it up edit, and restore all from cli

okay. I started with zigpy radio ezsp /dev/ttyACM0 info to try it out, but get an error. The path should be correct. Is ezsp correct?

Hi, i have a few Develco schuco power socket that all keep throwing some errors in the log. I believe the device "profile" is missing some details but not sure. Where would be the correct place to report this?

I can post the signature as well, but it was too long for a single message.

Hello, I have a major issue, my zigbee network have been unstable for the past few days, I'm using z2m and sometimes a lot of the devices get stuck on a state and loses connection and I have to re pair them back, like for example my aqara door sensor gets stuck to "closed" or "open" until I remove it and pair it back again, my sonoff motion sensor gets stuck on "clear" or "occupied", same with my aqara water leak sensor, even though I literally have a router next to each one of them and all have an average linkquality of 120.

And now all of a sudden all of my zigbee devices stopped working, I can't control them at all! lights, ACs, switches, plugs, nothing! errors filled z2m, I tired to restart HA from developer tools and it didn't work, restarted the whole VM and still, for some reason updating to the latest update of HAOS somewhat fixed it, but I still get errors, very high delay. what logs should I look for to know what's wrong? here are some errors in the z2m logs page

Hello Zigbee experts, I was directed here after sending an email to the Nabu Casa support account. I purchased a SkyConnect dongle and I am trying to find a way to generate a Zigbee code for connecting a Zigbee 3.0 smart electricity meter. My energy provider says that this pairing code is required in order to reach their meter. From the docs I cannot find any way to generate this code. Can you assist me?

carmine hamlet
#

As far as I know, neither ZHA nor Zigbee2MQTT support connecting to a power meter

#

it's a completely different protocol (profile)

lilac wharf
#

If I'm not mistaken, in general, the power meter is a coordinator itself as opposed to an end device

#

In the US at least. Not sure about elsewhere

carmine hamlet
#

Could be. All I know is that I have to unplug my Eagle Rainforest if I'm trying to pair an Inovelli Blue switch near the meter

lilac wharf
#

Interesting

carmine hamlet
#

there's some weirdo stuff going on there, described a bit on their forum

#

lots of finger pointing

#

but it's a reliable fix for me

lilac wharf
carmine hamlet
#

only happens if the switch is somewhat near the meter & Eagle box

white knot
carmine hamlet
#

my Inovelli Blue switches came with "install codes", but they have nothing to do with the energy profile

white knot
#

According to the very friendly but not very helpful SmartMeter support folks at PG&E (California based electric company) they've had other folks with Zigbee 3.0 radios connect to the meters just fine after providing them with these codes.

carmine hamlet
#

section 1.2 indicates that "ZSE" is different

#

but I have no experience with PG&E

white knot
#

Unfortunately that integration is poop with PG&E.

#

They can only give you data 2 to 3 days after the power usage has passed, and even then it is spotty.

#

Ok, well let's skip the power meter part of the question... Where does SkyConnect support the creation of "paring codes" for other Zigbee 3.0 devices?

carmine hamlet
#

it's not a Skyconnect question, but the integration that you're using to control it

#

ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT. And I don't know the answer to either

white knot
#

AFAIK, the only option when installing that dongle was ZHA, since I got it to specifically enable Matter, but got the Zigbee part as a bonus.

carmine hamlet
#

that thread is about a power meter

white knot
#

So I need to dump ZHA and switch to Zigbee2MQTT?

carmine hamlet
#

austere patio
#

Install codes are just a Zigbee 3.0 feature. They let you join new devices more securely and are usually shown as a QR code on the box. It won't help with connecting to a smart meter, which requires a $10,000+ certificate. Pre-made devices such as that Eagle box have a certificate and are designed to join an existing smart meter's network, have you type in a code (or communicate directly with the power company), and then shuttle data to you. There's no way to do this with a SkyConnect or any other coordinator, and won't be.

carmine hamlet
#

I'm not going to do any more Google searching ๐Ÿ™‚

white knot
#

OK, just so that I understand what I've gotten myself into here: I bought a piece of hardware from Nabu Casa and they sent me here for support. They don't support their own hardware?

austere patio
#

What are you specifically trying to do with a SkyConnect?

carmine hamlet
#

nothing that's occurred here indicates that

#

it just sounds like you don't like the answer ๐Ÿคท

white knot
#

I don't have an answer that appears to be an answer is my point.

carmine hamlet
white knot
#

๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ isn't an answer.

carmine hamlet
#

alright, I'm out. you got your answer above

austere patio
#

To connect to a smart meter, you need three things: an install code generated by your power company device, an expensive certificate that cannot easily be purchased, and software that can talk to your smart meter. Some power companies generate install codes so you can input them into a pre-made device (e.g. that Eagle box) but the latter two requirements aren't met.

white knot
#

So it seems that the PG&E folks just don't know what they are talking about.

#

Not surprising, but sad.

austere patio
#

They probably do

white knot
#

If they are asking me for an install code, then something is off.

austere patio
#

I don't remember the specifics but it's either the device that generates it or your smart meter itself

carmine hamlet
#

Mine is on a label of my Eagle

austere patio
#

In either case, it won't let you communicate with the smart meter because the meter requires your Zigbee device to have a smart energy certificate and I'm not aware of any single DIY device on the market that comes with one. Just those pre-made displays and bridges (e.g. Eagle)

white knot
#

That's what I would have thought, but the PG&E folks were so insistent that it's a code I needed to generate.

#

OK, it's off to the Matter forum for the other set of SkyConnect questions, then. Thanks.

austere patio

Good luck!

Do end devices only make one connection to a router??

mellow geode

To one router or the coordinator. They should switch if the chosen router becomes unavailable/offline

#

Although some devices like (older) Xiaomi/Aqara gear do not switch in that case and youโ€™ll have to re-pair it

ivory pendant

So to get the individual end devices to connect to a closer router... I would need to use the "add devices from this device" in zha... correct? it seems my end devices just pick a router at random and in some ways make bad choices....

Older Aqara devices pick the first router they see, so itโ€™s basically random what they pick.
Other devices should scan before picking one

alright. well thanks for taking a look. i was super happy to get off of smartthings hub finally, but the zigbee stuff has been driving me crazy. at least my zwave stuff seems to be working fine.

grim igloo
#

i use z2m instead of zha and use a tube PoE coordinator instead of a usb one

#

but zha and z2m are both stable - i have absolutely seen some people having issues with skyconnect but it always ends up being interference related (shit mesh, bad channel choice, etc)

#

this is also why i am very choosy with which devices i put on both my zigbee and zwave meshes

#

do you happen to have inovelli blue light switches too?

cosmic juniper
#

i don't. ge switches.

grim igloo
#

y u c k

cosmic juniper
#

lol

grim igloo
#

i have almost all hue bulbs for zigbee repeaters and almost all zooz light switches for zwave

cosmic juniper
#

i have sengled bulbs and they have been great up until now. as much as i hated smartthings because their service just constantly had problems, the hub itself never had connectivity issues with my devices. but as soon as i migrated to the skyconnect, now my bulbs keep dropping off.

grim igloo
#

shit

#

sengled bulbs arent repeaters and just generally arent great devices

#

colors arent great, transitions flicker

#

sengled bulbs break the zigbee spec for mains devices being repeaters so they dont help strengthen a mesh lol

cosmic juniper
#

6 years using them no problem. then skyconnect.

grim igloo
#

i suppose your ST hub might've just had a better antenna design / radiation pattern that allowed your lack of a great mesh to still work

#

i'm not arguing with you just pointing things out

#

zigbee and zwave are mesh protocols depending on repeaters to get signals across the house man

#

what repeaters do you have?

cosmic juniper
#

i have aotec plugs. 2 zwave. 2 zigbee. one of each upstairs, and one of each downstairs.

grim igloo
#

damn

#

my zigbee mesh has around 45 repeaters :/

#

every blue device is a repeater

cosmic juniper
#

i also cut power to the bulbs because i want switches to work like switches. but i guess that doesn't matter if you are saying they aren't repeaters anyway.

grim igloo
#

in general that's a bad thing but yes because they arent repeaters, they are okay to cut power to technically

#

that's the logic sengled used when choosing to violate the zigbee spec

#

is your skyconnect centrally located in the house?

#

i was using a sonoff P dongle

#

PoE coordinators are nice because a lot of times someone's server/pi/whatever with the usb dongles hanging off it isnt really centrally located like a basement or corner of the house

cosmic juniper
#

yeah, pretty central. but i've noticed it doesn't matter what the distance is from the dongle. devices near or far both randomly go unavailable.

grim igloo
#

i see

#

ya then could be something else. puddly is the zha maintainer and works at nabu casa and helps diagnose skyconnect related issues so he's your man but seems like he's not around right now

#

hopefully he jumps in later/tomorrow and tags you

#

not sure what else to suggest but ultimately you dont have a strong mesh.. regardless of "how things worked with smartthings"

#

so my suggestion is to get some more repeaters :/

#

it certainly wont hurt

cosmic juniper
#

now that i'll have a skyconnect and a sonoff, can i use one as the coordinator and the other as a repeater / booster / router whatever you call it?

grim igloo
#

you can flash router firmware on one yes

#

you'll have to look up how i've never needed to

#

it's suggested to just buy devices that repeat not dedicated repeaters with no added functionality

cosmic juniper
#

alright. you might be right with the weak network. again, it just was never an issue with the ST hub. but it seems very plausible. thanks again.

grim igloo
#

i'd buy a 4 pack of hue bulbs and replace some sengled bulbs and see if they magically work

#

but killing power to them is just gonna make your mesh suck even worse

#

cuz then known working routes will be dead

#

some people just buy like smart plugs and sprinkle them around but again.. kind of silly to buy shit you dont really need to use

#

light bulbs / light switches that you actually need / want is ideal

#

are you in the us?

cosmic juniper
#

do people rewire their smart switches to not actually cut power to bulbs when they are toggled? what happens in the event of a power outage / restoration. i don't want the lights just coming on in my kids rooms in the middle of the night.

#

yeah, in the us

grim igloo
#

no

#

people buy smart switches with smart bulb mode

#

and then the switch doesnt kill power to the bulbs (the relay)

cosmic juniper
#

oh wtf i didn't know that existed

grim igloo
#

yep

#

i use all zwave light switches in smart bulb mode with all zigbee light bulbs

#

and home assistant sees the light switch taps/double taps/triple/hold/etc

#

and then automates off those

#

downside to that is, if hass is down, or zigbee, or zwave, then my light switches dont work.

#

workaround is using zigbee light switches + light bulbs and binding them so they work even if hass is down

#

or zwave equivalent

#

multiple options

lilac wharf
#

Or if you have Tasmota switches and bulbs, you can set them up to talk via MQTT or with something called device groups which communicates over UDP. These are WiFi devices though

grim igloo
#

so smart switches are always supplying power after outage but lights never come on cuz hue bulbs remember previous state

grim igloo
#

or is there a noticable delay?

lilac wharf
#

It's insanely fast

grim igloo
#

cool

#

i'm already over leveraged on wifi personally but good to know

lilac wharf
#

In my experience, it's so fast it makes it look like it's just a regular switch

grim igloo
#

i've realized i have way too many wled devices and had to add another AP cuz my phone kept getting bounced from AP to AP with airtime fairness issues i think

lilac wharf
#

There's the occasional hiccup where some lights turn on slightly after the others, but that's just the nature of UDP

grim igloo
#

ya but zigbee groups using broadcast basically operates on the same logic

#

yet my 11 bulbs in my kitchen are always in sync when i call the zigbee group

lilac wharf
#

Well, with Tasmota device groups, all devices in the group know the specific other devices in the group

#

Not the case with zigbee groups sadly which are a broadcast that ends up being repeated three times by all routers on the network

grim igloo
#

ya the zigbee broadcast across the entire mesh when you only target one zigbee group is crazy

three times?

(and i havent updated anything.)

#

im going to sell this house so im probably just going to abandon all the switches here lol

grim igloo
#

All inovelli blues? Damn

fair mountain
#

yep. except garage which is 2 inovelli

#

er, leviton

#

leviton zigbee

grim igloo
#

Thatโ€™s like 5% of their entire stock

fair mountain
#

lol oh and that's the other problem ..

#

they have no stock.

#

it took me 2 months to get replacement switches for ones that were DOA

#

oh back to skyconnect ...

#

so, EMG (skyconnect) doesnt play nicely with Hue battery powered sensors. I didnt have any problems with Inovelli switches, though. However, z2m is very much "will eat your children" with EMG now, so you're basically stuck with ZHA.

grim igloo
#

if you lived in dfw i'd come take all the switches and install home depot cheapos ๐Ÿ˜›

fair mountain
#

i still have the box of decora

#

just what a pain in the butt, would have to redo all the careful wire management and remove the neutrals ..

grim igloo
#

so you never tried z2m to see if your issues magically went away?

fair mountain
#

im on z2m now

fair mountain
#

i switched away from ZHA because I broke my network up

grim igloo
#

with efr32?

fair mountain
#

no i am back on a cc stick, because I wasnrt willing not to be able to use $400 worth of hue sensors lol

grim igloo
#

ya

#

i like my hue motion sensors

fair mountain
#

they are probably the favourite part of my zigbee network

grim igloo
#

i'm happy with all my hue bulbs too tho

fair mountain
#

me too

grim igloo
#

so you split your zigbee into two networks?

#

i was wondering if that would help

fair mountain
#

i removed 10 year old hue stuff from my main network

#

and stuck it on my second network, along with some Sengled plugs that really broadcast spam

#

also removed a Linktap controller from my house physically (unplugged it)

grim igloo
#

ya i've heard first gen hue is bad for routing

fair mountain
#

okay so my most STABLE network (it lasted a month without any issues) has been TWO z2m 1.32.1, Z-Stack 20221226 on SMLIGHT SLZB-06 PoE.

#

Z-StaCk firmwares after 20221226 are garbage, there's a massive issue about it on Github (and I warned them before they released it that its broken .. but eh whatever)

#

ive got 166 devices on my first network and 12 on my second

#

anyway, im so fed up with zigbee. it should "just work" most of the time and it doesnt.

grim igloo
#

i'm on the latest stable now and think i've run into a couple issues but didnt bug me enough to chase down

#

but my mesh is only like 55 devices

fair mountain
#

im looking at moving to a larger house and im seriously debating what to do, i really like being able to control everything centrally and use adaptive lighting

#

10 hue hubs? ๐Ÿ˜„ lol

grim igloo
#

idk part of me says try splitting into sub 100 max devices per mesh and see if that magically fixes things

#

i'm not really a fan of the hue hubs myself

fair mountain
#

neither

#

idk what the new house is going to be anyway, its possibly i will have to rewire the whole thing with neutrals

grim igloo
#

the zigbee group control for 10+ bulbs in one room works better with z2m than it did on hue

fair mountain
#

might not even have cat6 drops lol

grim igloo
#

ye

nocturne river
#

then what usb i should buy?

all i want is to controlle my ac and i spent 7h searching and getting nothing

nocturne river
grim igloo
#

I would personally use a cc2652p based coordinator and z2m to control it

#

Lots of good info pinned in this channel

#

One cheap option is a sonoff p dongle for around $20-30 off amazon or less on alie

#

You can also buy PoE coordinators which is what Iโ€™m using now. Letโ€™s you place it centrally located

nocturne river
#

coordinators are the "routers"?

grim igloo
#

No

#

Coordinators are the usb stick or PoE or whatever that controls the network

nocturne river
#

oh i thought that called router

grim igloo
#

Routers are mains devices that extend the mesh and repeat signal like light bulbs, light switches, smart plugs

#

There are a few mains devices that donโ€™t repeat like sengled bulbs. Donโ€™t buy those

nocturne river
#

thanks

grim igloo
#

And have mostly hue zigbee bulbs which are all routers

#

Then motion sensors and stuff that use the mesh as well but donโ€™t repeat. Those are called end devices

#

Like battery devices

nocturne river
#

thats helped a lot, i thought all devises are the part of the mesh

#

if i can ask one last thing, do u know of an ir bluster that uses zigbee?

#

expet what i sent

grim igloo
grim igloo
#

There is also open mqtt gateway but maybe more diy than youโ€™re comfortable with

grim igloo
#

Google it dude

nocturne river
#

thanks for the info

#

Does anyone know why in MQTT I can see the value, but in home Assistant it doesn't appear?

#

I am ruling our Z2M as I can see everything perfectly, and it is being passed correctly to MQTT....it just doesnt appear in HQ. (Everything else for the device is working and showing correctly)

Someone has same issue with aqara humidity / temp sensor? Device became unavailable.

#

In HA

#

Thanks

#

Ill look into that

#

To be honest , i think its broken. It felt when attaching to wall , or either it got to moist. I wanted to use it in the shower to prevent light going out while showering

Hi friends. I got a ZigBee presence sensor and I've been trying to get the quirk to work and I have no idea what I'm doing anymore

#

Ahh I can't post photos

tranquil mica
#

anyone able to successfully Firmware flash a Sonoff Zigbee Dongle Plus?

#

I am getting
error timeout waiting for ack/nack after synch

#

it is pushing the dongle into Boot Loader mode, I can see the little light Turn Green

#

but it just wont actually do anything

hybrid cloud
#

i've got a particular devicie that keeps going offline, or sometimes "losign connection" without saying it's offline. the only way to reconnect it seems to be to go to add a zigbee device again and it'll reestablish connection and show the device. tapping the pair button on it etc doesnt do anything otherwise
how can i go about troubleshooting this to figure out whats going on?

sour shadow
#
  1. What device?
  2. What router is it connected to?
  3. Did you check for WiFi interference?
hybrid cloud
#
  1. Aqara vibration sensor lumi.vibration.aq1
  2. An ikea light, TRADFRIbulbE26WSglobeopal1100lm
  3. Current LQI 255, RSSI -65, there's a new network on wifi channel 4, that wasnt there before, which my phone picks up at between -60 to -80 dBm on the path between the sensor and the router. other than that one network, there's nothing on wifi that should be causing interference
#

i thought it might have been the battery at first, but i still experienced the issue when i swapped batteries

#

the battery measurement itself appears to be unreliable. it always sticks between 70-73% except for when i first repair the device where the battery hangs around 9-20% before eventually jumping back to that 70-73 range

violet dagger
#

is power to the router bulb cut sometimes?

hybrid cloud
#

nah, it's always plugged in and powered

#

i was looking at my logs and it looks like the device was checking in fine, then my zigbee server restarted for some reason, and when it came back online, the device wasnt responding. So i had this from the multiprotocol addon

Restarting
[05:18:54:108619] Info : Endpoint socket #12: Client disconnected. 1 connections
[05:18:54:108907] Info : Client disconnected
[05:18:55:117675] Info : New client connection using library v4.3.1.0
[05:18:55:124479] Info : Endpoint socket #12: Client connected. 2 connections
Reusing socket from previous instance.```

And this line in my zha logs ````2023-08-25 05:19:01.362 DEBUG (MainThread) [homeassistant.components.zha.core.gateway] [0x4ADF](LUMI lumi.vibration.aq1) restored as 'available', last seen: 0:05:27 ago, consider_unavailable_time: 21600 seconds``
#

but it never actually responded after that restart

#

maybe i'll have to check in thefuture, see if this happens every time

hybrid cloud
#

ok either this was a different issue al ltogether or it's related that the vibration sensor losing connection is being caused by a different device

#

so i'll justhave to keep an eye out

hybrid cloud
#

all i can say for sure is that whenever this happens, short tap on the pairing button makes it blink twice, which supposedly means the sensor is linked to thenetwork, but clearly its not sending its messages successfully

#

if anyone has any ideas what to look for next time it happens, would be helpful

tranquil mica
#

if it is an Aquara device, they are known to not follow proper Zigbee protocols. you need to find a compatable router, i know theres a list somewhere

eternal mason
#

If I have a smart relay module, can I wire it up so that it can communicate with HA (over ZB) while not actually controlling anything (the lights that it'd normally control are smart, so I need them always powered)

#

Specifically, I have a sonoff zbmini2. Im considering some zbmini (not 2) if necessary, because I suspect the 2s not requiring a neutral wire means they're dependent on the bulbs to complete the circuit

#

Although perhaps when wiring the bulbs to always be hot, I could include the relays line out there as well

#

I'll have an electrician doing it for me, but he's not familiar with relays so I want to work out how the wiring should go

sour shadow
#

Well, why? Why have a relay that doesn't control the load?

#

If that's so you can use the switch as an input for HA then the module has to support decoupled/smart bulb mode

violet dagger
#

Which that one doesnt

eternal mason
#

Would the zbmini 1, which does use a neutral wire, support that?

#

Or alternatively, are there any recommended zigbee relays that do support that? I don't want to replace the whole switch because it's in a gang box with another smart relay + switch going to dumb bulbs

violet dagger
#

if the device has a "decouple" or "smart bulb" mode it supports that

eternal mason
#

Okay. I really like ZB but I haven't been able to find a ZB relay that has those modes, at least not mentioned in any product pages. I found an article mentioning Shelly (wifi) relays have that mode though, so I'll probably pick some of those up

violet dagger
#

Some do but they are Tuya

astral seal
#

Aqara also makes some that do.

#

And then yeah if you want to go WiFi you could get a Shelly 1 or flash a Sonoff Mini with esphome.

eternal mason
#

If the tuya relays still go through zigbee, does it matter? They don't need to phone home or anything, right?

#

But yeah I just realized the Shelly relays are also wifi repeaters. That actually sounds awesome, so I think I'll do that

astral seal
#

Tuya is known for devices that don't follow spec, and their quality can be hit or miss.

grim igloo
#

if so, they dont do active connections

astral seal
#

It looks like the new gen of Shelly stuff just provides WiFi range extension for other Shelly devices, so that's not really going to do anything for you unless you're planning on getting more Shelly devices and you have problems with WiFi coverage.

grim igloo
#

weird

#

yay for added interference on 2.4ghz tho!

eternal mason
#

Just going off the product page it doesn't seem to only be a repeater for other Shelly devices

nocturne river
#

are all Aqara zigbee based devices can be add to zigbee2mqtt without any active connection nor app? as far as i know Aqara wifi based devices do need an app

grim igloo
#

active connection?

#

they need a zigbee mesh or to be close to the coordinator

#

no added app

nocturne river
#

sorry, by saying "active connection" i meant by phoning home, etc for the init setup

sour shadow
#

Zigbee devices cannot "phone home"

#

They are by definition 100% local

grim igloo
#

we wouldnt be buying chyna devices if they required phoning home

#

well some people would cuz they dont care about privacy and might not be the smartest, but a lot of us wouldnt lol
