AWD generally don't have the ground clearance found on 4WD either.

Nah. Just recommend at the 10 year mark to change. No need to change unless tread is low or tyres are cracked

Just manufacture date

static schooner
#

I didn't know they had expiration dates

forest edge
#

i did find a hole in the wall shop that didn't care about expiration but 3 of the shops i went first all mentioned it and said they couldn't help me

static schooner
#

Seems like mainly an issue with spares

umbral cliff
#

If the tyre is over 10 years then I could see them not touching it in sue hell america

forest edge
#

I think it's a greed thing personally

#

they do that to sell more tires

#

the experation date is within the tires code

static schooner

Nobody cares about or for spare tires until it's too late

That’s definitely not true

look i'm just spewin what i was told lol

umbral cliff

Which is crap

forest edge
#

i think the whole concept is crap and greed. i stated that above lol

umbral cliff
#

My car passed a roadworthy when we purchased it in 2014, had 14 year old tyres and they’re fine

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

but if all shops go that route...

static schooner
#

You can find your tire’s age in its DOT Identification Number, which you’ll find stamped on the tire’s sidewall. The last four digits of this number indicate the week and year the tire was built.

forest edge
#

the hole in the wall place i found didn't care but 3 out of 4 places is no small thing

umbral cliff
#

Hell even Bridgestone themselves say 10 years is when you should replace it

forest edge
#

why 10

#

that didn't use to be a thing either

umbral cliff
#

Rubber in constant heat cycles & usage does start to perish

static schooner
#

I've been far more likely to get a nail or screw in the wrong place than for them to age out

forest edge
#

tires last way longer than 10 years

umbral cliff
#

You can push it longer

#

But they start to crack

#

Or they just wear out before 10 years

forest edge
#

not nessearly

#

crack has to do with condition in which they are stored

#

my trailer tires are almost as old as i am just as an example

umbral cliff
#

They can crack over normal usage too

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

like i said, anything past 6 they wouldnt

#

but there is nothing wrong with them

umbral cliff
#

Okay so it comes from a recommendation to look at replacing them over 6 years

#

Your stores just said fuck it let’s rip you off

#

Trailer tyres probably can be pushed far since they’re not used that often. But car tyres 10 years is a good age to at least start looking at replacing them. Since rubber does age. Nothing has changed that.

In fact from this source (https://m.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=138), it seems that tyres are now lasting a lot longer than before

forest edge
#

yea I wouldn't replace my tires like an oil change

forest edge
#

that emoji only option for twitch chat is interesting. you imagine discord having a setting like that lol

clear ferry
#

Our rule of thumb is usually 5 years here for tires, but usually they last 7 years fine

forest edge
#

they must assume everyone power brakes at stop lights

last cedar
#

Rubber gets old

#

Most people store tires wrong, too

#

@clear ferry still happy with your xc?

forest edge

yea if they are not made out to be a swing during off season you are storing them wrong

I was thinking more dark dry and cool tbh

Complicated. I flagged for HR that the situation at work is too stressful, I am one of a few technicans that can do everything and there isn't enough hours in the day. Often other people can go and do work I can, but then I need to go back and check or correct their work, just making more work. No structure for helping people who can't do as much, no time to show people stuff, and customers that come with too short deadlines. It is a mess

clear ferry
#

I just agreed with my manager that I will work 100% from home from august to december, and be avaliable at best 1 day per week

#

because wife is starting 100% work

glacial knot
#

what's available in that context? To be on-site at a customer?

clear ferry
#

if needed, mostly avaliable on phone or chat

#

to guide collegues or customers

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

I have a right to 2-3 days a week paternity leave

#

this is just 1-2 days extra on top

umbral cliff
#

Which is the entire working week

clear ferry
#

that I have shifted around in my leave

umbral cliff
#

I guess it works

#

Just seems pointless to be like “oh I might work 1 day”

#

Just take it all off

clear ferry
#

Imagine having rights and managers that adapt to your life situation 😄

umbral cliff
#

I don’t have to imagine

clear ferry
#

I'll be back at work 100% in december, then back to 80% in january for 2 more years

umbral cliff
#

I just wouldn’t even bother with the 1 day

clear ferry
#

If they know I'm avaliable one day a week

#

they can queue their requests

#

and I can go through all of them

forest edge
#

@last cedarthere is a solo racoon right now in my backyard.. shall I order the coyote strike?

#

@clear ferry after I migrated my zpool properly and recreated containers, everything works as expected when overcomplicating things bite you in the buttocks

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

Migrating data between data pools online is overcomplicated?

forest edge
#

granted eventually you would think people would go broke then settle in.. but it's having it's impact that's affecting us all right now

umbral cliff
#

But working in an office is no different than working from home

#

You open your laptop, and you work

forest edge
#

the cats out of the bag

forest edge
#

there were lots, like business's that would normally have an open store laid off employee's while retaining some to the petty office type work from home while other delievered etc

#

the world didn't come to stop just because of covid.. it just hit a major speed bump but there are tons and tons of jobs that still needed to be done one way or the other

umbral cliff
#

Customer facing jobs never expected to be wfh though?

forest edge
#

the water plant, normally the techs would be on site but during covid there would only be like 1-2 on site while others monitored systems remotely wtc

umbral cliff
#

The petty office style stuff can be wfh. If you don’t need to be in an office then. You can do with

#

*wfh

forest edge
#

not an ideal situation

umbral cliff
#

Maybe increase the number on site

forest edge
#

it's not safely

#

thats the point

umbral cliff
#

But if they can see what’s happening remotely?

#

Then what’s the issue

forest edge
#

like monitoring a computer remotely then having a power issue.. well your boned

umbral cliff
#

That’s why you still have some on site. As you said

#

And in that case have it so people can be forced on site in emergencies

forest edge
#

1-2 wouldn't be able to handle a big crisis lol

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

it's the point of the wfh aspect and people getting a taste.. teenagers who had prior worked a fast food, retail etc etc now do online streaming etc

#

I know we had this discussion before

umbral cliff
#

Wfh is far better than working in an office. It should definitely be offered as an option for people

#

There are an obvious section of jobs where it can’t be

#

Those ones are usually people who don’t want to wfh as they can be hands on

forest edge
clear ferry
#

Well, that was my fault for oversight

forest edge
#

too much on the plate

#

as i stated

clear ferry
#

That should be the norm

forest edge
umbral cliff
#

It’s what my job does. Makes it easy

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

i don't buy that, that's like those people who want to storm the capital thinking violence is the only way

#

alot of jobs were already heading to working from home prior to covid anyways

umbral cliff
#

Given the number of companies trying to force people back to the offices for no reason… definitely feels the way

forest edge
#

and if it had remained at that pace the world could have absorbed it

#

but being pushed through the door and hearing good luck sucks ass

umbral cliff
#

Except it works fine

#

We haven’t had a collapse of society over the last 2 years

#

Businesses haven’t collapsed because people are wfh

forest edge
#

you realize they are still saying we are heading for a recession right?

clear ferry
#

You guys are yes

forest edge
#

i don't think it's just us

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

eu faces the same issues

forest edge
umbral cliff
#

This sounds like you are jealous people can wfh and you just wanna say if I couldn’t do it then you can’t

forest edge
#

in what world could that ever make sense?

#

you think i "work"?

#

how the hell could i be on here as much as i am with a job that's not an office job since you think i am jealous of such lol

umbral cliff
#

Like most boomers probably make money from rentals lol

forest edge
#

i do make money sitting on my ass

#

I don't even need to punch in

umbral cliff
#

Lol punch in

forest edge
#

I had several jobs with old style mechanial time clocks and time cards

#

even saw the transition to digital time clocks lol

umbral cliff
#

My job is just do 7.5 hours over the course of the day. No logged hours and a very rough 7.5, so work 7 and it’s fine

#

Businesses are flexible now

forest edge
#

they call that salary.. those exists regardless

umbral cliff
#

Office jobs are more traditionally salary

clear ferry
#

Salary that sounds like nonsense that doesn't have flexible time or overtime

#

At least that is what my American friends tell me

forest edge
#

it has it's downsides for sure

#

but it's better these days than it had been in the past

clear ferry
#

I've only ever seen time clocks at hospitals, and they were based on RFID 15 years ago

forest edge
#

can't work someone for 80+ hours a week without compensation or getting in trouble like they use to do

clear ferry
#

Well, you say that

#

But I know people who do that today

forest edge
#

there will always be some jobs that still run on the old ways lol

clear ferry
#

And don't even get comp time

#

In us federal sector

forest edge
#

some people prefer it

#

workaholic is a real thing

clear ferry
#

He doesn't, but he has no choice

#

Since health care is tied to his employment and he doesn't know if he can find a new job fast

forest edge
#

he probably gets some kind of perk that makes it worth it.. noone would stay at a job if they made them miserable without something making it worthwhile

clear ferry
#

He gets nothing

forest edge
#

well in that case he's just scared

clear ferry
#

He is desperate

forest edge
#

i dunno right now is the perfect time to find a new job

#

soooooo many people are hiring it's unreal

clear ferry
#

Yes

#

I've gotten as many offers this year so far as the last two combined

forest edge
#

odd.. i don't recall you recently gloating about shoving that in your bosses face for a raise...

clear ferry
#

I did

#

And got a raise

umbral cliff
#

Overtime through time off in lieu which works for me

clear ferry
#

I do the same

umbral cliff
#

Public service here is better if you’re a new start, easy to earn a decent amount. Plus impossible to be fired from the job due to strong unions lol

clear ferry
#

I have fixed salary, full overtime rights, comp time as needed

umbral cliff
#

They also get more super (retirement money that gets invested for you) than normal employees (15% of your income rather than 10%)

#

For reference, that’s 10-15% on top of however much you get in $ for the pay period

clear ferry
#

Yeah, my employer does 7% on top

#

Which is great

#

And our retirement funds aren't tied to any stocks or hedge funds (max5% if you opt in)

umbral cliff
#

Ours are just invested by a super company you chose. Can do your employers fund or chose whatever fund you want. You can’t access it until you retire so as to force people to save

forest edge
#

lol force to save.,that's an incentive to not quit

clear ferry
#

No, our pension isn't tied to the employer

#

So if we quit / move our pension just follows us

#

It goes into an account system that government keeps track of

#

So I can see my pension across all employers I've ever had in one government website

#

We get one part of pension from government and employers can add up to 15% on top of that if they want

forest edge
#

sounds like the 401k

clear ferry
#

Without fear of losing money

finite atlas
#

norway has a pretty great pension system

forest edge
#

part of your version of our social security

#

altho to be frank after reading the fine details of your "pension(s)" holy crap for anyone who dosen't invest 40 years of thier life lol

#

curious what the average pay out is for the average working person

#

well working to secure those restrictions lol

#

wtf your widowers only get (up to) 55%? what a rip lol

umbral cliff
umbral cliff
umbral cliff
forest edge
#

i seriously doubt it's over 300k a year

#

for the average

umbral cliff
#

It’s not 300k a year, it’s one payout invested for us

#

Plus the 900/fortnight

#

Apparently your 401k is absolute crap from what I’ve heard

forest edge
#

yea that's like our standard pensions

umbral cliff
#

And the superannuation system here is a lot better

forest edge
#

but only if you work x amount

forest edge
#

just another means the company pays into for your benefit

#

but it's not the pension or social security etc

#

according to what I read norway has like 4-5 different types of pensions all relying on the person working x amount of years with steep drop offs for every year short of that goal. it's basically thier version of our social security

#

but the restrictions and the min sounded kind of aids

#

and that widower cut off is nuts

umbral cliff
#

Yeah our super is our money, so if we die it gets paid out to our next of kin/ whoever is in the will

forest edge
#

I feel spoiled

#

lol

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

because we get more secured means of retirement

umbral cliff
#

Because you get a pension and a payout? Aka same as us?

#

Except the 401k is crap

forest edge
#

if mr dies after x amount of years and mrs was a stay at home mom most her life, she still is covered and secured

clear ferry
#

If I work like now, and retire when in 65 I would get $80k a year roughly

forest edge
#

and it's not a lump sum

#

it's money for the rest of your life

forest edge
clear ferry
#

I earn a lot too

umbral cliff
#

Pension for us is paid out no matter how you worked unless you either have an income over a limit or have assets over a certain high limit

clear ferry
#

And I've worked since I was 17 with pension benefits

forest edge
#

but then people these days get paid alot more than my day

forest edge
#

plus i don't like your lump sum lol

umbral cliff
#

Lump sum is all your earnings over working. If you get paid more you’ll have more paid out

#

It lets you spend it as you want

#

No annual income

forest edge
#

but that's what the other crap is for.. like the 401k and your pension etc

#

social security is there to prevent you from being able to go broke lol

umbral cliff
#

The super is equivalent to your 401k

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

granted social security for the solo person who dosen't work very much or worked thier whole life making min wage won't be anything to brag about but still

umbral cliff
#

Here it’s about 500-600/fortnight for job seekers or students (non pension obviously) and then 900-1200/fortnight for age pension

forest edge
#

course with min wage being bumped up now.. i guess that min wage statement no longer holds true.. dunno

#

now 1200 a month for the rest of your life is alreaght

#

it's still kind of low

#

but here a person can live off that somewhat

umbral cliff
#

Welfare needs to be bumped up generally here tbh

#

It’s not good enough for living anymore

forest edge
#

which is complete bs imo

umbral cliff
#

1200/month is fucking nothing nowadays

forest edge
#

probably, honestly kind of out of touch with the whole cost of living currently aside from what i shell out

#

but 1200 not that long ago here would have been livable

#

you wouldn't be going on too many trips but atleast your lights would stay on

glacial knot
#

do you have to pay rent from those 1200/m?

forest edge
#

yea

#

low income housing

#

you actually qualify for a lot of shit being old and poor lol

umbral cliff
#

The AU$1200/mo is what welfare gets here, including normal rent. There’s fuck all if you’re younger and poor

forest edge
#

in today's world i am not sure if 1200 would be enough but not too long ago you could even get non low incoming apartment for like 300/m

#

atleast here where i live, cost of living is all over the board around the country

umbral cliff
#

Where I am in Canberra housing is fucked

forest edge
#

au is fucked.. just admit it

umbral cliff
#

For housing? Yes

forest edge
#

i watch a lot of service type job youtube videos

#

shit is unreal there atleast in those places

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

cost of having your pipes cleaned etc.. how plumbing is ran to begin with essentially promoting clogs

umbral cliff
#

I’ve never had to have pipes cleaned…

forest edge
#

the eletric service ones are funny

#

well these places could also be night and day from where you live

#

they don't exactly say where they are

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

i like watching them cause it's neat seeing how homes etc are in diffrent parts of the world

forest edge
# umbral cliff What do you mean by that?

like one was a service call to inspect why a hot water tank wasn't working to find out the line burned up due to improper installation, shit was stringed all about

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

the homeowner had no clue the entire wall behind the hot water tank which was shoved in a cabinet was completly singed and black lol

umbral cliff
#

Like all circuits in homes here must have RCDs, whilst america only needs GFCI in bathrooms. Better to just have them on everything

forest edge
#

most of the residences in these videos are older

#

brick and mortal type homes etc

umbral cliff
#

Even older, if you touch a circuit then you must have the circuit upgraded

#

All rentals must be updated

#

But yeah older homes not surprised. Especially if the haven’t been touched in decades

forest edge
#

the most interesting part of the plumbing ones was how the pipes would run into boxes which had groiund lvl access

#

but they would always get clogged

#

and not talking about city junctions, these are boxes just outside the back door etc

glacial knot
#

the terms for grandfathered electric installation ran out here. So a bunch of stuff had to be touched quite recently

forest edge
#

was weird, and the pipes were all like hand made which was neat.. but again proned to fail

umbral cliff
#

Sounds like a very old home then

forest edge
#

no idea

glacial knot
#

Like, older than 70s shit with only 2 lines, and ground was connected to null in the socket

forest edge
#

i was guessing 80's but then no clue when those styles home were built in au

umbral cliff
#

Brick homes can be 40s to 50s here too

#

50s are a big boom of them

forest edge
umbral cliff
#

Very much not surprised about shitty piping then

glacial knot
#

if there's not a century to say up front it isn't old...

forest edge
#

it was kind of ingenious concept but real world it was shit cause age took away the ground lol

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

especially for electricity
I don't think it's that much different for plumbing here.

#

But 40s and 50s here were mostly scrambled together stuff after the war anyways. We got 70s+ and then a bunch of stuff that's centuries old

umbral cliff
#

40-50s were a big boom for aus. Due to post war migration. Houses being built and not as great as they should be

#

Better than nowadays bulk built houses and apartments

umbral cliff
#

And even then not that long

glacial knot
#

So 30 years past us. And then we had some cuts in between

forest edge
#

i wish roo's didn't get so big,.. be an awesome pet

umbral cliff
dawn prawn
#

your employer isn't contracted to the govt in canberra? jesus thats rare

umbral cliff
#

Not really… quite a few consulting firms spread out

#

Majority is defence of course

#

But there’s plenty other

dawn prawn
#

consulting to whom?

umbral cliff
#

What do you mean?

dawn prawn
#

do you work for a consulting firm?

umbral cliff
#

Yes

dawn prawn
#

and the gig does not flow back to a govt contract somehow?

umbral cliff
#

The project I'm on does. But seen plenty that are completely unrelated to gov contract (eg banks, or state govs)

dawn prawn
#

haha that is why you are doing 7.5 hrs. banks etc you would be pulling a lot more than that

#

my role is the same. 7.5 hrs, thats it

umbral cliff
#

Nope. we're required to do 7.5 as per my employer. Anything more is required overtime

glacial knot
#

why would it matter who pays your employer for how long you work?

umbral cliff
#

^

#

The client wants us to do work, employer is who sets how long we work and how much they pay me

dawn prawn
#

Yeah that is what mine is too, but the ASDEFCON or whatever Govt contract that they have you pegged against would say that too. It all flows down in the contracts

#

client would be paying your company for 36 hours a week

#

for a person

umbral cliff
#

If they make us work 8-10 hours a day then we get paid overtime. However unless you're a manager or senior manager we're not expected to work over 7.5hrs a day

dawn prawn
#

yeah same as where I am

#

it all flows from the clients contract, and the CoA ones are all 36 hr week / 7.5 hr day (really 8 with a 30 min lunch break)

umbral cliff
#

Yeah we do an hour lunch with 7.5hr work

#

Friend on a bank contract does 7.5 hr plus an hour lunch

#

They're the same

dawn prawn
#

stuff that, get in get out, work through lunch and leave early

umbral cliff
#

Eh flexible hours mean I can do stuff during the work day if I want. May as well keep busy

clear ferry
#

Anything before 8 or after 16 is considered overtime for me

dawn prawn
#

friend of mine was working for delloite on bank contracts, was always super long hours, calls at 6am with NYC, calls at 8pm with London etc. I guess depends on what level you're at

clear ferry
#

I seldom work more than 3-4 active hours any given day anyway

umbral cliff
#

Same with KPMG

dawn prawn
umbral cliff
#

Friend works at KPMG, shes expected to pull 10 hour work days with no overtime

#

Its fucked

Lulz

I'd leave

clear ferry

We turned off analogue air waves in 2009

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

Yes, but that requires additional hardware, most people who use it have it on their cabins here

forest edge
#

what?

umbral cliff
#

It’s literally an antenna and a digital tv

forest edge
#

all over the air broadcasts are digital now

umbral cliff
#

In fact Norway uses the same system as australia as far as I can see

#

USA has their own different one but that’s not abnormal

clear ferry
#

It requires an antenna and decoder subscription here, with a card reader

umbral cliff
#

That’s so shit

forest edge
#

yea we run the new and improved ones

umbral cliff
#

Here it’s literally an antenna, which the old analogue ones work fine for, and just pass a digital signal to the tv through a normal PAL tv jack. Parents one is from at least the 90s and still works perfectly fine for digital free to air

forest edge
#

yea yea we know.. the rest of the world hates us so much they had to go and change everything we already had to thier own /s

clear ferry
#

Since national TV is free over IP, very few bother using the dtv option for that

umbral cliff
#

It’s the same here

forest edge
#

all 3 channels of it

umbral cliff
#

Just that if I’ve got the jack I can chuck it in and it works even without internet. It’s convenience more than anything

clear ferry
#

Without internet , what nønsense, we even have internet 4km out at sea

umbral cliff
#

Oh I’ve had it once, where I was setting it up and had it unplugged

#

Whilst that was happening still had 4/5G working though

#

But really it’s convenient to just chuck the tv onto free to air, watch the news, flick back to the chromecast

forest edge
#

the new atsc 3 is pretty sick tho.. it even supports two way communication which not sure how that works

clear ferry
#

Wonder if Sodoma wants to come get our copper landline cables now that they are being ripped up

forest edge

copper sells for alot now, sure

clear ferry
#

That is probably why they are actually recycling it

umbral cliff
#

Norway needs the money after all

forest edge
#

wtf just read atsc 3 can even supply internet

#

that has to be some kind of antenna lol

umbral cliff
#

Probably no need, since 4/5G is decent enough and I doubt it would be any better than satellite

forest edge
#

4 g has it's limitation and 5g you practically have to shove the transceiver up your ass to get good signal. they won't be better lol

umbral cliff
#

You do realise 5G can get good speeds whilst using the older frequencies (and thus range) right?

#

We talked about this the other day

#

It exists

#

It works

#

It’s still 400+mbps

forest edge
#

again, it's limited and pale in comparision to the range ota gets

umbral cliff
#

Thus satellite. Doubt ota is going to be any better

forest edge
#

no idea

#

i mean it could be

umbral cliff
#

Look if it is better then it could be a ultra rural way of internet

forest edge
#

it won't be anything to brag about but having the ability to be in the middle of nowhere with a solar panel and antenna and get tv and internet is sick lol

#

it's targets specifically at people who currently can't get access

#

satellite is retarded expensive so they don't even chaulk that up as an option

#

which is what the starlink thing was suppose to counter

#

but even that has limitations you can't get starlink everywhere

clear ferry
#

Lol starlink

#

Great in Ukraine

#

But it is a ridiculous substitute in a non war torn country

umbral cliff
clear ferry

Better infrastructure for mobile networks tbh

forest edge
#

that's not as easy as it sounds

umbral cliff
#

Ultra rural is quite hard to do for that. Even though I do agree

#

The regional/ semi rural should have mobile (there’s plenty of black spots)

#

But I’m talking 200-400km from the nearest town

clear ferry
#

It would be easy if corporations weren't allowed to abuse consumers

#

And it was government controlled

forest edge
#

you gonna have towers powered off panels in the middle of nowhere? expect employee's to 4x4 to clean those panels every so often?

#

the ota thing makes sense.. you can push ranges upwards of 150ish miles

#

where as shit like 4g is only 10

umbral cliff
#

I would love mobile covering 100% of australia for example, but there are so many areas where it’s just so bloody rural and so far away (200 or more) from any existing infrastructure

#

random question for anyone that's worked with Cat6A - is it still a good idea to use a punchdown wall plate with it or would a female-to-female keystone coupler be better because the requirements around the length of the untwisted pairs are so strict?

#

... or am I just overthinking this?

forest edge
#

so out of touch with current wire i had to look up what the A was even for lol

hardy fjord
#

lol, yea, that's where I was ~3 days ago

#

it's a confusing space because the standards folks seem to have rolled out 10G ethernet, then sat around for a while, then noticed no one was upgrading because it was too expensive, then rolled out more standards for 2.5G and 5G ethernet that let you keep the same cables and RJ45 connectors if you just add shielding

#

it's a bit of a mess, but AFAICT cat6a is the way to go if you're putting something in a wall right now

forest edge
#

according to what i am reading there is no benefit to 6A over 6 at less than 200ft

hardy fjord
#

hrmmm

forest edge
#

sorry 165ft

hardy fjord
#

fair, yea

#

it also seems like 6A isn't significantly harder, though?

forest edge
#

the only difference i see is what you stated above about the tighter twisted pair and being more strict with terminating at panels etc but then I never used it so I don't know just how realistically strict all that is

#

dunno if our resident nerd @clear ferry works with it or even knows

clear ferry
#

Copper.... I haven't worked much with it for 20 years, we did Cat6 around 2004

#

Cat6a is what should be used for longevity if cat7 is too pricey from what I've seen in the field

forest edge
#

even with short runs? whats the diffrence?

clear ferry
#

And one should always follow code if you are intending 10G, but, 10Gbase-T is an abomination

#

Well, cat6 isn't certified for higher than 1g, so for any future proofing regardless of length, cat6a should be used

forest edge
#

lol they said that about cat5 and 5e lol

#

but here i am...

clear ferry
#

It supports 10g

#

But isn't certified

#

Afaik

forest edge
#

my setup proves everyday there are more tolerances than specifications state lol

clear ferry
#

Cat6e isn't an officially recognised standard either

#

Which is confusing

hardy fjord
#

yea, I'm aiming for 2.5G now since that's not crazy expensive in a house, might go for 10G eventually but I'm under the vague impression that fiber >> copper for basically all 10G applications?

clear ferry
#

Ew multigig standards

#

Abominations

hardy fjord
#

... but then you have to equip consumer hardware for it, and it seems like the consumer space will be running on RJ45 until the end of time or something

is it the wifi5 one? why would you need to upgrade it?

umbral cliff
#

Not upgrade the velop, upgrade the router aspect to something else being the firewall

forest edge
#

ah

umbral cliff
#

Velop can stay for wifi until the whole house networking gets done

#

Then it’ll be wifi Ap’s on the roof/ wall

forest edge
#

i dunno why people push for that. really don't see the point

#

many of them now are designed to be compact and either sit on a bookshelf or just plug into an outlet

umbral cliff
#

They’re wanting Ethernet to go in & move where server gear can sit. So may as well get fixed wired in APs

forest edge
#

i would not want to try and add ethernet to a finished house lol

#

I added mine to this one when everything was tore back to the studs

umbral cliff
#

It’s not too bad, just have to work around where things can be run down the walls

#

Roof space isn’t hard though

forest edge
#

depends on the house i guess.. some may not be bad. mine would be an freaking nightmare

#

split level there is no simple up to down lol

umbral cliff
#

Parents have decent gaps in the roof spaces (two story place) so shouldn’t be hard. The hardest will be running down the walls, but since there’s telephone jacks and tv cables already then we can just work in those areas

#

Might have to cut a hole in one part of the plaster, but they want a full repaint inside so not too bad

forest edge
#

better pray there isn't any fire blocks

#

not sure what year(s) those came to be standard

umbral cliff
#

The house was built in the 50-70s. Definitely not going to have them

forest edge
#

oh yea your good

umbral cliff
#

Even modern houses may not have them here

#

Not sure on that

forest edge
#

yea guess it would most certainly be different per country. atx will likely chime in and say norway has had them since the 1800's

And windows is the luxury suv next to the car? Fancy but overkill

forest edge
#

I love that my bank has took it upon themselves to start checking my credit for any changes and to send me an email every month to say nothing has changed

umbral cliff
#

Lol imagine caring about a credit score

forest edge
#

I get that it's wise to keep an eye on it especially this day and age but at the same time, i don't feel like that is something people should be having on their minds on as they live their life. With the exception of those who had ruined theirs and trying to get back on their feet or someone new waiting for the day they can finally get a decent loan or something.

umbral cliff
#

I check up on my report about every 12 months to make sure someone isn’t using it, the score itself doesn’t matter to me

forest edge
#

well the score is an indicator if something is wrong or if something is going right

umbral cliff
#

Not so much here

#

Means fuck all except if you’re in debt

forest edge
#

well it's tied to history and usage so it has to be used even in au for approval on some things

umbral cliff
#

Not really

#

They care more on income

#

Credit score is “does this person have bad history” and that’s about it

forest edge
#

well that's part of the score lol

umbral cliff
#

Yeah they can look at the history for that

forest edge
#

your score is a quick glance

umbral cliff
#

Everyone here starts with excellent credit score

#

Not how in the USA you have to build it

forest edge
#

so at 16 you can go in to dealer and buy an exotic expensive car on credit with no issues?

umbral cliff
#

Well at 16 you can’t get credit at all, under law

#

But if you walked in at 18 and had an income that covered it then yes

forest edge
#

then 18 or whatever you min age is lol

umbral cliff
#

They care about your income more than anything

forest edge
#

so you can get a job that pays well and on the same day buy something expensive on credit

#

i don't buy that at all

#

lol

umbral cliff
#

I got a credit card after 1 paycheque from work. 6 grand limit (because we wanted guaranteed acceptance) but could probably get 10-15k

#

So after one paycheque yes

forest edge
#

why do you spell it that way.. you make me rage

umbral cliff
#

Because cheque is spelt that way?

forest edge
#

another piece of proof that the british english sucks

umbral cliff
#

Not really. Sounds better to write

forest edge
#

it looks like someone having a stroke would write

umbral cliff
#

Nah that’s Americans spelling things with Z not S

#

Like recognise

forest edge
#

one day you all will come out of that cave and drop those wooden clubs

Do you know where the name America comes from

hushed basalt
#

They don't even have their own Continent

#

And have to share the name with two continents

#

Imagine sharing your name with 34 other countries

forest edge
#

what's your point?

#

we are the most diversified country in the world and we set the standards for many things partially due to that fact. Our population size is directly linked to people escaping their own in search of better pastures and with all of this diversity it is still majority agreed that our initial native language needed to evolve and it did. so again, british english sucks lol

clever mortar
forest edge
#

that study seems to base a lot of the score off the languages spoken

#

which skews things imo

#

they even pointed it out with brazil

umbral cliff
forest edge
clear ferry
#

nice, migrating my boot pool to zfs online

forest edge
#

and with english being the most used language on the planet i mean kind of have us at a disadvantage lol

umbral cliff
#

But also, it’s not a key component of it?

#

All it is is saying that similar languages share common values

forest edge
#

read what tinkerer posted

umbral cliff
#

Not that languages are everything

forest edge
#

they talk specifically about how language spoke effects score

umbral cliff
#

Still nowhere near america being the most diverse though unlike what you said

#

Nothing seems to collaborate that

forest edge
#

nothing shows otherwise either

clear ferry
#

I'm more diverse than america, I'm mixed heritage and I speak 6 languages

forest edge
umbral cliff
#

So if america is so diverse, and people are moving there, then why has there been so much hate and anger about people coming there

forest edge
#

I feel like we're bursting at the seams

umbral cliff
#

(Ignoring the fact that US nationality laws are some of the easiest in the world, be born there and you’re a citizen)

forest edge
#

the hate stems from people not wanting the country to turn into a toilet. when you get to my age and see miles and miles of green beautiful land turn into parking lots and apartment complex's it kind leaves a bad taste in your mouth lol

clear ferry
#

Good thing the US has millions of miles of unused land

#

and abandoned towns

forest edge
#

it really dosen't feel that way

#

sweden and norway would be even worse then us

#

you guys would have a shit fit if people just flooded in and all your green poofed

umbral cliff
#

And denser living in cities so you don’t need apartment blocks out whoop whoop

forest edge
#

not really the point of what i was trying to convey lol

umbral cliff
#

Except you can increase population without the urban sprawl

forest edge
#

you cannot increase pop without losing something

#

just not possible

#

and ontop of losing stuff you also gain extra bad stuff

#

more trash, more pollution etc etc

umbral cliff
#

Extra bad stuff being diversity and more people to work/ pay tax/ etc?

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

at some point it's not about who can have the biggest workforce lol

umbral cliff
#

I dunno. Seems to be the USA military motto lol

clear ferry
#

50% of sweden is just unused

#

they can increase the pop nicely

forest edge
#

many many american's are small town type people.. they want to to remain that way
