@leaden cipher posted a code wall, it is moved here --> https://hastebin.com/ireremuneq
that didn't work as intended o.0
My Subaru AWD has high / low range selection.
yea the lines are blurry but I don't think awd is the same as in terms of torq etc
AWD generally don't have the ground clearance found on 4WD either.
also pretty sure awd only comes in limited slip while 4wd is posi
Nah. Just recommend at the 10 year mark to change. No need to change unless tread is low or tyres are cracked
Also obligatory fuck suvs
here if a tire is past said expiration date shops won't touch it. not even sure they would plug a hole
found that out trying to get a trailer tire fixed
I didn't know they had expiration dates
i did find a hole in the wall shop that didn't care about expiration but 3 of the shops i went first all mentioned it and said they couldn't help me
Seems like mainly an issue with spares
If the tyre is over 10 years then I could see them not touching it in sue hell america
I think it's a greed thing personally
they do that to sell more tires
the experation date is within the tires code
Nobody cares about or for spare tires until it's too late
What tyres code. Tyres don’t have any unique code or anything. They just have the manufacture date stamped on
I replace my spare tyre with the other 4 main ones. Alongside rotating the 5 tyres during the annual service
Common with older European cars
that stamp is what i am referin to
Before they moved to run flat or repair kits
That’s a manufacture date. If they’re saying that’s an expiry date then your tyre is dead as soon as it walks out the plant
no they have like 6 years or something
That’s definitely not true
look i'm just spewin what i was told lol
Which is crap
i think the whole concept is crap and greed. i stated that above lol
My car passed a roadworthy when we purchased it in 2014, had 14 year old tyres and they’re fine
Again, it’s not a forced date set by anyone except the shops you went to
but if all shops go that route...
You can find your tire’s age in its DOT Identification Number, which you’ll find stamped on the tire’s sidewall. The last four digits of this number indicate the week and year the tire was built.
the hole in the wall place i found didn't care but 3 out of 4 places is no small thing
Hell even Bridgestone themselves say 10 years is when you should replace it
Rubber in constant heat cycles & usage does start to perish
I've been far more likely to get a nail or screw in the wrong place than for them to age out
tires last way longer than 10 years
You can push it longer
But they start to crack
Or they just wear out before 10 years
not nessearly
crack has to do with condition in which they are stored
my trailer tires are almost as old as i am just as an example
They can crack over normal usage too
If they’re 50 years old then no surprise they don’t want to touch it
Okay so it comes from a recommendation to look at replacing them over 6 years
Your stores just said fuck it let’s rip you off
Trailer tyres probably can be pushed far since they’re not used that often. But car tyres 10 years is a good age to at least start looking at replacing them. Since rubber does age. Nothing has changed that.
In fact from this source (https://m.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=138), it seems that tyres are now lasting a lot longer than before
yea I wouldn't replace my tires like an oil change
that emoji only option for twitch chat is interesting. you imagine discord having a setting like that lol
Our rule of thumb is usually 5 years here for tires, but usually they last 7 years fine
they must assume everyone power brakes at stop lights
Rubber gets old
Most people store tires wrong, too
@clear ferry still happy with your xc?
yea if they are not made out to be a swing during off season you are storing them wrong
Yaaas queen @last cedar
So good I had to make a video
I wonder what dead animal they are using to create that lol
Your coyote, I presume
actually now that I watched it again I saw one of the finger close and open lol
doh, just bought a laptop for a server.. no ethernet port
should i try a usb adapter?
sweet, thank you
which exact laptop did you bought?
2x USB 3.2
huh, thought it had 3.0
Well, that tells you nothing about the connector type
worst case, 5gbp/s throughput per port
wont be a problem for me, i'm not doing any crazy data transfer
oh?
how do you mean?
you could just use a usb hub with at least the same spec for more usb ports
5gbps is plenty for normal at home use
right, i will need a hub, as I already have 3 devices to plug in
good grief, the driver list is painful on the install
also wifi is still just fine for your usecase, the laptop will probably be pretty close to the router anyway, right?
yeah it will
which drivers do you need?
most stuff works just fine out of the box on linux, they have improved a lot there
apparently intel wi-fi 6 ax200 160Mhz
though the actual device is AX1650i
going off old forum info, though
just wait till it arrives
and yes, i am going to try wifi first, see how it goes
i don't follow
i have the default net installer, so i'm just scrollin the list right now
Keep scrollin‘ scrollin‘ scrollin‘
they conducted that research at home and that's how they came to that conclusion
This is the first I ever heard or seen this. Don't even get how it's possible lol https://youtu.be/lQF_wL-qzDM?t=18

I get guilt tripped when working from home, and called in when studying from home. Have a HR meeting about it this week, not happy
You against wfh?
to have HR tell your boss to not annoy you, or because someone complained about you?
Complicated. I flagged for HR that the situation at work is too stressful, I am one of a few technicans that can do everything and there isn't enough hours in the day. Often other people can go and do work I can, but then I need to go back and check or correct their work, just making more work. No structure for helping people who can't do as much, no time to show people stuff, and customers that come with too short deadlines. It is a mess
SOUNDS LIKE YOU WORK FOR MURICANS

I just agreed with my manager that I will work 100% from home from august to december, and be avaliable at best 1 day per week
because wife is starting 100% work
what's available in that context? To be on-site at a customer?
Why do they keep you hired if they’re lucky to only have you working 1 day a week if that
I have a right to 2-3 days a week paternity leave
this is just 1-2 days extra on top
Which is the entire working week
that I have shifted around in my leave
I guess it works
Just seems pointless to be like “oh I might work 1 day”
Just take it all off
Imagine having rights and managers that adapt to your life situation 😄
I don’t have to imagine
I'll be back at work 100% in december, then back to 80% in january for 2 more years
I just wouldn’t even bother with the 1 day
If they know I'm avaliable one day a week
they can queue their requests
and I can go through all of them
think we had this discussion once before. not totally against it but at the same time it does cause some complications
@last cedarthere is a solo racoon right now in my backyard.. shall I order the coyote strike?
@clear ferry after I migrated my zpool properly and recreated containers, everything works as expected when overcomplicating things bite you in the buttocks
There really aren’t any complications for getting work done for office jobs. There are few exceptions (eg governmental secret documents) or mental health reasons like being able to talk to colleagues. But there’s no downside
Migrating data between data pools online is overcomplicated?
the mass demand for a work from home job is so high now regular jobs can't find people to hire
granted eventually you would think people would go broke then settle in.. but it's having it's impact that's affecting us all right now
Office jobs. They should all offer work from home options. Other jobs are very different and variable
But working in an office is no different than working from home
You open your laptop, and you work
only if people would see it as such.. covid made some jobs that couldn't really be wfh still be wfh because people had no choice and now that people have had that taste
the cats out of the bag
Such as what jobs?
there were lots, like business's that would normally have an open store laid off employee's while retaining some to the petty office type work from home while other delievered etc
the world didn't come to stop just because of covid.. it just hit a major speed bump but there are tons and tons of jobs that still needed to be done one way or the other
Customer facing jobs never expected to be wfh though?
the water plant, normally the techs would be on site but during covid there would only be like 1-2 on site while others monitored systems remotely wtc
The petty office style stuff can be wfh. If you don’t need to be in an office then. You can do with
*wfh
not an ideal situation
If you can monitor them safely then what’s the issue
Maybe increase the number on site
like monitoring a computer remotely then having a power issue.. well your boned
That’s why you still have some on site. As you said
And in that case have it so people can be forced on site in emergencies
1-2 wouldn't be able to handle a big crisis lol
That’s why I said this
Or this
it's the point of the wfh aspect and people getting a taste.. teenagers who had prior worked a fast food, retail etc etc now do online streaming etc
I know we had this discussion before
Wfh is far better than working in an office. It should definitely be offered as an option for people
There are an obvious section of jobs where it can’t be
Those ones are usually people who don’t want to wfh as they can be hands on
made you spend hours editing a file that had no purpose didn't it? lol
Wife's new job is hybrid with self designated how many days in each
That should be the norm
i get it and i agree.. if an office job is designed and can be done from home 100% error free then by all means.. but the way we entered this era was not good
Or just set free days for whatever. You chose whether you work from home or the office. As long as it doesn’t affect the job then it shouldn’t matter what you do
It’s what my job does. Makes it easy
It was probably the only way we could enter this era. Companies hate employees working from home. It’s an ancient thinking
i don't buy that, that's like those people who want to storm the capital thinking violence is the only way
alot of jobs were already heading to working from home prior to covid anyways
Given the number of companies trying to force people back to the offices for no reason… definitely feels the way
and if it had remained at that pace the world could have absorbed it
but being pushed through the door and hearing good luck sucks ass
Except it works fine
We haven’t had a collapse of society over the last 2 years
Businesses haven’t collapsed because people are wfh
you realize they are still saying we are heading for a recession right?
i don't think it's just us
The recession isn’t caused by wfh lol
eu faces the same issues
no but it's all a packaged deal with how economy is being handled
This sounds like you are jealous people can wfh and you just wanna say if I couldn’t do it then you can’t
in what world could that ever make sense?
you think i "work"?
how the hell could i be on here as much as i am with a job that's not an office job since you think i am jealous of such lol
Like most boomers probably make money from rentals lol
Lol punch in
I had several jobs with old style mechanial time clocks and time cards
even saw the transition to digital time clocks lol
My job is just do 7.5 hours over the course of the day. No logged hours and a very rough 7.5, so work 7 and it’s fine
Businesses are flexible now
they call that salary.. those exists regardless
Office jobs are more traditionally salary
Salary that sounds like nonsense that doesn't have flexible time or overtime
At least that is what my American friends tell me
it has it's downsides for sure
but it's better these days than it had been in the past
I've only ever seen time clocks at hospitals, and they were based on RFID 15 years ago
can't work someone for 80+ hours a week without compensation or getting in trouble like they use to do
there will always be some jobs that still run on the old ways lol
He doesn't, but he has no choice
Since health care is tied to his employment and he doesn't know if he can find a new job fast
he probably gets some kind of perk that makes it worth it.. noone would stay at a job if they made them miserable without something making it worthwhile
He gets nothing
well in that case he's just scared
He is desperate
i dunno right now is the perfect time to find a new job
soooooo many people are hiring it's unreal
odd.. i don't recall you recently gloating about shoving that in your bosses face for a raise...
I get flexible time and overtime… it exists in salary world
Overtime through time off in lieu which works for me
I do the same
Public service here is better if you’re a new start, easy to earn a decent amount. Plus impossible to be fired from the job due to strong unions lol
I have fixed salary, full overtime rights, comp time as needed
They also get more super (retirement money that gets invested for you) than normal employees (15% of your income rather than 10%)
For reference, that’s 10-15% on top of however much you get in $ for the pay period
Yeah, my employer does 7% on top
Which is great
And our retirement funds aren't tied to any stocks or hedge funds (max5% if you opt in)
Ours are just invested by a super company you chose. Can do your employers fund or chose whatever fund you want. You can’t access it until you retire so as to force people to save
lol force to save.,that's an incentive to not quit
No, our pension isn't tied to the employer
So if we quit / move our pension just follows us
It goes into an account system that government keeps track of
So I can see my pension across all employers I've ever had in one government website
We get one part of pension from government and employers can add up to 15% on top of that if they want
sounds like the 401k
Without fear of losing money
norway has a pretty great pension system
part of your version of our social security
altho to be frank after reading the fine details of your "pension(s)" holy crap for anyone who dosen't invest 40 years of thier life lol
curious what the average pay out is for the average working person
well working to secure those restrictions lol
wtf your widowers only get (up to) 55%? what a rip lol
Like Norway ours is also run by the government but we chose whatever private company we want to use. The money goes into those funds regardless of employer
Average here is $337,000 for a 60-64 year old
Yeah government pension is $900 or so/fortnight. Super is a lot nicer to have
talking about thier pensions
i seriously doubt it's over 300k a year
for the average
It’s not 300k a year, it’s one payout invested for us
Plus the 900/fortnight
Apparently your 401k is absolute crap from what I’ve heard
yea that's like our standard pensions
And the superannuation system here is a lot better
but only if you work x amount
it's a bonus so meh
just another means the company pays into for your benefit
but it's not the pension or social security etc
according to what I read norway has like 4-5 different types of pensions all relying on the person working x amount of years with steep drop offs for every year short of that goal. it's basically thier version of our social security
but the restrictions and the min sounded kind of aids
and that widower cut off is nuts
Yeah our super is our money, so if we die it gets paid out to our next of kin/ whoever is in the will
Why
because we get more secured means of retirement
if mr dies after x amount of years and mrs was a stay at home mom most her life, she still is covered and secured
If I work like now, and retire when in 65 I would get $80k a year roughly
that sounds kind of high
I earn a lot too
Pension for us is paid out no matter how you worked unless you either have an income over a limit or have assets over a certain high limit
And I've worked since I was 17 with pension benefits
but then people these days get paid alot more than my day
see those restrictions are aids
plus i don't like your lump sum lol
Lump sum is all your earnings over working. If you get paid more you’ll have more paid out
It lets you spend it as you want
No annual income
but that's what the other crap is for.. like the 401k and your pension etc
social security is there to prevent you from being able to go broke lol
The super is equivalent to your 401k
That’s what our pension is for. Most older people are still on it as they don’t have a solid income that counts
granted social security for the solo person who dosen't work very much or worked thier whole life making min wage won't be anything to brag about but still
Here it’s about 500-600/fortnight for job seekers or students (non pension obviously) and then 900-1200/fortnight for age pension
course with min wage being bumped up now.. i guess that min wage statement no longer holds true.. dunno
now 1200 a month for the rest of your life is alreaght
it's still kind of low
but here a person can live off that somewhat
Welfare needs to be bumped up generally here tbh
It’s not good enough for living anymore
according to what read is if you die your family only see's 55% of that
which is complete bs imo
1200/month is fucking nothing nowadays
probably, honestly kind of out of touch with the whole cost of living currently aside from what i shell out
but 1200 not that long ago here would have been livable
you wouldn't be going on too many trips but atleast your lights would stay on
do you have to pay rent from those 1200/m?
yea
low income housing
you actually qualify for a lot of shit being old and poor lol
The AU$1200/mo is what welfare gets here, including normal rent. There’s fuck all if you’re younger and poor
in today's world i am not sure if 1200 would be enough but not too long ago you could even get non low incoming apartment for like 300/m
atleast here where i live, cost of living is all over the board around the country
Where I am in Canberra housing is fucked
au is fucked.. just admit it
For housing? Yes
i watch a lot of service type job youtube videos
shit is unreal there atleast in those places
How so
cost of having your pipes cleaned etc.. how plumbing is ran to begin with essentially promoting clogs
I’ve never had to have pipes cleaned…
the eletric service ones are funny
well these places could also be night and day from where you live
they don't exactly say where they are
What do you mean by that?
i like watching them cause it's neat seeing how homes etc are in diffrent parts of the world
like one was a service call to inspect why a hot water tank wasn't working to find out the line burned up due to improper installation, shit was stringed all about
Electrical stuff is normally alright here. Sounds like a shitty electrician
the homeowner had no clue the entire wall behind the hot water tank which was shoved in a cabinet was completly singed and black lol
Like all circuits in homes here must have RCDs, whilst america only needs GFCI in bathrooms. Better to just have them on everything
Even older, if you touch a circuit then you must have the circuit upgraded
All rentals must be updated
But yeah older homes not surprised. Especially if the haven’t been touched in decades
the most interesting part of the plumbing ones was how the pipes would run into boxes which had groiund lvl access
but they would always get clogged
and not talking about city junctions, these are boxes just outside the back door etc
the terms for grandfathered electric installation ran out here. So a bunch of stuff had to be touched quite recently
was weird, and the pipes were all like hand made which was neat.. but again proned to fail
Sounds like a very old home then
no idea
Like, older than 70s shit with only 2 lines, and ground was connected to null in the socket
i was guessing 80's but then no clue when those styles home were built in au
70's wiring here was two lines, the sheathe was made out of metal weave which acted as the ground grounding the metal socket box to the ground in the panel
Very much not surprised about shitty piping then
if there's not a century to say up front it isn't old...
it was kind of ingenious concept but real world it was shit cause age took away the ground lol
It is old for australia. Also 40-50s is still old for building standards compared to now
especially for electricity
I don't think it's that much different for plumbing here.
But 40s and 50s here were mostly scrambled together stuff after the war anyways. We got 70s+ and then a bunch of stuff that's centuries old
40-50s were a big boom for aus. Due to post war migration. Houses being built and not as great as they should be
Better than nowadays bulk built houses and apartments
Remember we only became a country in 1901, before then it was a mix of colonies
And even then not that long
So 30 years past us. And then we had some cuts in between
roo's circling a bon fire
i wish roo's didn't get so big,.. be an awesome pet
sounds like govt contract...
Nope. Same applies for private
your employer isn't contracted to the govt in canberra? jesus thats rare
Not really… quite a few consulting firms spread out
Majority is defence of course
But there’s plenty other
consulting to whom?
What do you mean?
do you work for a consulting firm?
Yes
and the gig does not flow back to a govt contract somehow?
The project I'm on does. But seen plenty that are completely unrelated to gov contract (eg banks, or state govs)
haha that is why you are doing 7.5 hrs. banks etc you would be pulling a lot more than that
my role is the same. 7.5 hrs, thats it
Nope. we're required to do 7.5 as per my employer. Anything more is required overtime
why would it matter who pays your employer for how long you work?
^
The client wants us to do work, employer is who sets how long we work and how much they pay me
Yeah that is what mine is too, but the ASDEFCON or whatever Govt contract that they have you pegged against would say that too. It all flows down in the contracts
client would be paying your company for 36 hours a week
for a person
If they make us work 8-10 hours a day then we get paid overtime. However unless you're a manager or senior manager we're not expected to work over 7.5hrs a day
yeah same as where I am
it all flows from the clients contract, and the CoA ones are all 36 hr week / 7.5 hr day (really 8 with a 30 min lunch break)
Yeah we do an hour lunch with 7.5hr work
Friend on a bank contract does 7.5 hr plus an hour lunch
They're the same
stuff that, get in get out, work through lunch and leave early
Eh flexible hours mean I can do stuff during the work day if I want. May as well keep busy
Anything before 8 or after 16 is considered overtime for me
friend of mine was working for delloite on bank contracts, was always super long hours, calls at 6am with NYC, calls at 8pm with London etc. I guess depends on what level you're at
I seldom work more than 3-4 active hours any given day anyway
Yeah delloite is a bad one for that
Same with KPMG
i used to be able to say that
Friend works at KPMG, shes expected to pull 10 hour work days with no overtime
Its fucked
thats the real world lol
pfft we arent mutts
Aus is little Murica
Its what they force for grads
Disgusting
Because they know you really have no other option
Later on you actually get control
Eh got me a job thats in an industry I like and I am enjoying so far
grads, whats that? 😛
if they'd fuck up and make such an expection obvious it'd be a nice severance package here
Yeah its not obvious except a strong undertone. They still get paid enough even with working excess
i still giggle at all the clowns i went to school with who stressed about studying and uni degrees etc. i don't know many, if any, that would make what I am.
I think I only know one friend who actually works with what he studied 5 years for
And most of them didn't start working 7-10 years after I did
yeah, joined army in a decent job (not a knuckle dragger) that was transferrable to every industry, 12 years doing that getting paid from day 1.
then into a real job
I wanted to go into uni, nice to walk out with a degree after studying two things I really enjoyed (IT and Criminology)
you also got plain lucky
You have to be a special type of person to do army though
Eww army
They started trying to enlist me when I was 17
Tried for 6 years
Then gave up
Wanted me in intelligence for some reason
he, they didn't try with me. But I'd be out for health reasons either way /shrug
was good, travelled, saw interesting shit, lots of experience, took a low level job when i got out, thought 'wtf are these idiots doing, make me the manager' boom done.
Got a letter in my mailbox with _unless you become a priest or a veterinarian you are hereby excused from the military _
don't they have compulsory service there?
hmmm lots of europoor countries do still
service of some form, whether military, hospital etc
Lmao why those two
Everyone gets drafted, but only those who want to go in to the military go in
Oh yeah atx definitely did some service to someone 😉
They lack them I guess
under desk servicing
wore his knee pads out for the XC90
Fun fact, house interest rates are so low my car costs more per month then the house

Only 0.2% though
not anymore since the year that I'd been old enough
To be honest, compulsory military service is pretty shit for the military itself. Usually the conscripts have low motivation which causes all kinds of issues. Good for giving some experience, maybe for some self discipline, but a professional military outperforms them any day of the week.
I think one of my 20 or so close childhood friends was in the military
Hard flashbacks from your old avarar

yes
Hate how the new integration in #announcements is necessary. Hate the whole war going on
i mean, who actually is happy about it, that is not misinformed by propaganda or trolling?
it doesn't make a lot of sense. having a hard time picturing too many people concerning themselves with HA in that country atm
I did. And it was sad and beautiful
❤️
@last cedarso you should find this amusing i am sure. I got on the roof today to clean the gutters and found poop on my roof. squirrels do not do that and there is only two other animals in this area that get on roofs.. cats and you!
Could be used by those in safety to get updates on loved ones. At least one person found it useful enough to make an integration and a PR, and that’s enough.
Raccoon on the roof
If I had a trash can
Ya ba diba diba diba diba diba diba dum
hasn't there been some kind of phone app that does all that already and has been place since almost the start? I wonder if this integration pulls from that
I love the fact that there is an API for anything
Having it where it could send notifications or do anything else could be useful though if the app doesn’t do that
Now, I should get one in place that can trigger whenever someone posts the word supervisor in #the-water-cooler
Surprised you haven’t given your work an api to see whether you’re working or not
I have that already @umbral cliff
Nah you go talk to your supervisor
Too bad there isn’t a watching tv teams status
Well, that could be easily integrated
By seeing the media player status
And update away message
Except when it’s on the tv 😂
People watch tv?
It’s called a chromecast (or other box tv)
But sometimes I chuck free to air on for the news
You do realise digital tv exists?
Yes, but that requires additional hardware, most people who use it have it on their cabins here
what?
It’s literally an antenna and a digital tv
all over the air broadcasts are digital now
In fact Norway uses the same system as australia as far as I can see
USA has their own different one but that’s not abnormal
It requires an antenna and decoder subscription here, with a card reader
That’s so shit
yea we run the new and improved ones
Nah they’re the same it’s just yours is because you already had a different system. Because of the different frequency electrical grid
Here it’s literally an antenna, which the old analogue ones work fine for, and just pass a digital signal to the tv through a normal PAL tv jack. Parents one is from at least the 90s and still works perfectly fine for digital free to air
yea yea we know.. the rest of the world hates us so much they had to go and change everything we already had to thier own /s
Since national TV is free over IP, very few bother using the dtv option for that
It’s the same here
all 3 channels of it
Just that if I’ve got the jack I can chuck it in and it works even without internet. It’s convenience more than anything
Oh I’ve had it once, where I was setting it up and had it unplugged
Whilst that was happening still had 4/5G working though
But really it’s convenient to just chuck the tv onto free to air, watch the news, flick back to the chromecast
the new atsc 3 is pretty sick tho.. it even supports two way communication which not sure how that works
Wonder if Sodoma wants to come get our copper landline cables now that they are being ripped up
copper sells for alot now, sure
That is probably why they are actually recycling it
Norway needs the money after all
wtf just read atsc 3 can even supply internet
that has to be some kind of antenna lol
Probably no need, since 4/5G is decent enough and I doubt it would be any better than satellite
4 g has it's limitation and 5g you practically have to shove the transceiver up your ass to get good signal. they won't be better lol
You do realise 5G can get good speeds whilst using the older frequencies (and thus range) right?
We talked about this the other day
It exists
It works
It’s still 400+mbps
again, it's limited and pale in comparision to the range ota gets
Thus satellite. Doubt ota is going to be any better
Look if it is better then it could be a ultra rural way of internet
it won't be anything to brag about but having the ability to be in the middle of nowhere with a solar panel and antenna and get tv and internet is sick lol
it's targets specifically at people who currently can't get access
satellite is retarded expensive so they don't even chaulk that up as an option
which is what the starlink thing was suppose to counter
but even that has limitations you can't get starlink everywhere
Lol starlink
Great in Ukraine
But it is a ridiculous substitute in a non war torn country
I never liked the idea of having 40 billion space trash floating above me
What would your solution for ultra rural properties be (granted I don’t agree with starlink at all anyway)
Better infrastructure for mobile networks tbh
that's not as easy as it sounds
Ultra rural is quite hard to do for that. Even though I do agree
The regional/ semi rural should have mobile (there’s plenty of black spots)
But I’m talking 200-400km from the nearest town
It would be easy if corporations weren't allowed to abuse consumers
And it was government controlled
you gonna have towers powered off panels in the middle of nowhere? expect employee's to 4x4 to clean those panels every so often?
the ota thing makes sense.. you can push ranges upwards of 150ish miles
where as shit like 4g is only 10
I would love mobile covering 100% of australia for example, but there are so many areas where it’s just so bloody rural and so far away (200 or more) from any existing infrastructure
Still manage to have like 98% of the population covered though lol
move to norway where all 15 people in the pop live on the same street

i wish the roku's casting ability wasn't complete trash
I told you there would be repercussions
Now that I got my 8x SSD zfs pool up and running I've freed up my old 2 and 6TB drives
I should order a set of 4x10TB SAS drives from ebay
and see if they are any good, for that price it can't be wrong
Yes, order them for me
Also... Todays job
Noooooooodle soup
Raccoon thumbs help a lot
This is one of maybe 6 of those panels, we are swapping the alarm system and doing away with the panels
Pretty much
This pleases me so much.. I've been banging my head against influxdb docs attempting to create this grafana panel all night.

A progressive Farmer from Shorkot Pakistan did a great job by installing mobile solar setup. i love how lazy i can be with new hardware migration. forgot zwavejs will function on a separate device, so i can just ignore it for a while. docker is awesome
going alright
still working through the migration

captain's log, end of third day on the Norwegian territory. Sandnes and Stavanger weather have been ok if you forgot the very strong wind, i've heard the raincloud have been struck over Bergen for the last decade.
There have already been 1 major drawback in putting a settlement here ... i can find diary butter anywhere ... how can those people live with "you won't believe it's not butter" crap is over me... Anyhow, tomorrow is my last day in this part of the territory, then i'll move where the rain is ...
Hi, how/where can I follow matter/chip implementation and try to help with it?
For HA? AFAIK there's nothing underway
I'd expect it's more likely that somebody will do something like Matter2MQTT
I saw that a member of nabu casa was doing it in a release stream. And home assistant GitHub have a repository for it:
https://github.com/home-assistant/addons-development/tree/master
I would like to follow and try to help with it. Love the initiative
Well, you can follow that add-on development on GitHub
You can also talk to the devs in #devs_add-ons-archived if you're planning on helping
What about a mosquitto tracker that integrates with mqtt mosquitto2mqtt
I don't know a lot but I want to try. I read the home assistant core docs and matter and tried their example with esp32, but I would like to learn more and try to help
For when you don't have enough hops in your IoT network...
Nothing surprises me with users
can temperture sensors in home assistant be logged in one log file
There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that. If you can't work out which is relevant, start in #general-archived.
If it's a question about the HA Yellow see #yellow-archived, and #330990055533576204 for the Blue. Install related problems go to your Installation Method channel.

ho lord, I've been able to clean up my setup and office enough that I can actually considering tinkering with HA again
I even washed my goddamned keyboard and did CABLE MANAGEMENT
my brain hurts
where's my HA integration with Fiverr to hire someone to come do this nonsense for me
holy crap took them 13 years to release a sequel to Avatar lol
there's going to be like four of them too iirc
I was surprised people were so into the world. I just saw it as a cool tech demo at the time
it still is rather nice cgi but seemed pretty advanced back in 2009 lol
Interesting the people who were into avatar
they were so hard into it it was fucking fetish level
I've not even seen the first one
to a fetish level? Have you seen weebs?
The blue avatar or the good avatar?
Nvm. The pocahontas i space one.
It was a neat tech demo, I guess.
Wife wants a Label maker, just orderd this for her
"MakeID L1 Label Maker review - a lot of labeling in a little package - The Gadgeteer"

I hope that I can connect it to the PC and then can do awesome stuff
<@&330946878646517761> could you please
Thanks for the report
Im trying to install Ubuntu on one of my computers, but for some reason, the installer skips the "install alongside windows/reformat/something else" menu and goes straight to this where there's no listed partitions. I've tried different usb drives and different versions of the installer with no luck. Is there anyone here that can help me out?
oh poor you
People really shouldn't throw away half-full beer cans. Think of the raccoons!
you should get one as a pet
I think raccoons come in through the cat door and get you as a family
They are illegal here
what do the raccoons who live there think of that?
But if one magically found its way to my house...
Afaik it has happened maybe 20 times? Sightings
The idea is that they should be shot
I thought that's a hedgehog with some salad at first
Sorry downloading something from it
is it receiving at 60Gbit/s?
I feel like that graph isn't made for those speeds 😂
The network connector cannot even do that speeds
It scales perfectly, as the card is 1G
1G eww
i'm just scanning it for raccoon pics
why should the gov know about it?
keep it a little secret between you two raccoons
crap shoot heck no
I love people sharing pictures of their network issues
and hiding internal IPs and hostnames

"is it running on the same subnet? we can't tell because you are a paranoid donkey who shouldn't secure their own network"
let me and my paranoid shizophrenia alone
Know about what.....?
you having an illegal raccoon
winnukes
strange, i forgot it aswell
I'm gonna get you on those IPv6. Those clearly aren't internal
or link local or something . . .

Is home assistant cloud worth it? How does it work after you buy it?
WTF is that
I fixed it. ^^
The Nabu Casa service ... up to you whether it's worth it
It gives you easy remote access, and easy integration with Google Home and Amazon Alexa
@forest edge will be alright 👍
#cloud-archived can tell you all about it
Eww cloud
Hi! Has anyone managed to include a timestamp with measurements in MQTT payloads for Shelly devices?
wrong channel but you should look into last triggered for events which will give you what you want
Sorry, what channel will be appropriate for this? It is not HA related
your not asking for an automation or anything? then maybe #diy-archived
Nope, just if anyone has managed to include timestamp (generated by the device itself) together with the measurement
random question for anyone that's worked with Cat6A - is it still a good idea to use a punchdown wall plate with it or would a female-to-female keystone coupler be better because the requirements around the length of the untwisted pairs are so strict?
... or am I just overthinking this?
so out of touch with current wire i had to look up what the A was even for lol
lol, yea, that's where I was ~3 days ago
it's a confusing space because the standards folks seem to have rolled out 10G ethernet, then sat around for a while, then noticed no one was upgrading because it was too expensive, then rolled out more standards for 2.5G and 5G ethernet that let you keep the same cables and RJ45 connectors if you just add shielding
it's a bit of a mess, but AFAICT cat6a is the way to go if you're putting something in a wall right now
according to what i am reading there is no benefit to 6A over 6 at less than 200ft
hrmmm
sorry 165ft
the only difference i see is what you stated above about the tighter twisted pair and being more strict with terminating at panels etc but then I never used it so I don't know just how realistically strict all that is
dunno if our resident nerd @clear ferry works with it or even knows
Copper.... I haven't worked much with it for 20 years, we did Cat6 around 2004
Cat6a is what should be used for longevity if cat7 is too pricey from what I've seen in the field
even with short runs? whats the diffrence?
And one should always follow code if you are intending 10G, but, 10Gbase-T is an abomination
Well, cat6 isn't certified for higher than 1g, so for any future proofing regardless of length, cat6a should be used
my setup proves everyday there are more tolerances than specifications state lol
yea, I'm aiming for 2.5G now since that's not crazy expensive in a house, might go for 10G eventually but I'm under the vague impression that fiber >> copper for basically all 10G applications?
... but then you have to equip consumer hardware for it, and it seems like the consumer space will be running on RJ45 until the end of time or something
lol
We did 2.5g in 2008 as a stepping stone for customers, it should have stayed back there
why if everything you have is fiber? 2.5G for consumer here is only because of the exsisting infrastructure of coax
well not only.. greed is probably the main factor lol
99.9% of consumers don't need >1G, the ones that do know how fiber optics work
lol
2.5G makes sense for internal network for sure.. in a world with al these iot devices and cameras etc
i saw that even faucets are wifi now
soon our clothes will have built in wifi
I expect all that to be wireless by default
just what i need is my shirt telling me my pits smell..
i can smell it over here too, ew
here let me help you by blowing some air through the hairs
I think it's amusing that one of the uses of IoT forever was a toilet that could analyze your...output...and now that's being done at scale to monitor Covid
monitoring at city level is actually pretty clever
Very
I wonder if old folks home will implement that stuff when it becomes more advanced
They've been doing testing with smart home for elders here for a decade
It's quite popular
Before we gave up with Covid waste water testing was the best way to tell if there’s an outbreak (and when we were controlling an outbreak, where it might’ve spread to)
It’s pretty cool
And what variants are dominant
I forgot that was a thing too
Man if you have a roku and you have cameras piped through HA in any way I cannot recommend IP Viewer enough
the dude even put in commands for automations which is pretty slick
End of an era there
it was zune that made it into guardians of the galaxy tho
had two ticks on each ankle (was weird) so was nice knowing you guys.. lyme disease here i come!
Hm... In Teams *text* is bold, not italics. All my emphasis comes out all wrong.
What's *text* here? text ahh, itallic. _text_ is as well though
If i make a bit copy using dd of my ssd and gzip it to get rid of null bits, then my ssd breaks and i buy a new one with the same capacity, is it possible to extract it and write back to the new SSD? What are the odds the old and new SSD have different number of BITS even though both are let's say 256GB
they will have different capacity even if the sticker is the same
if there's a couple months to years in between, even if it's the same SKU from the same vendor
as to whether you can just throw on the old image: yes-ish
probably works, but might break in not so nice ways
be prepared to do some recovery work on the image (resize file system, then resize partitions, then resize file, then repair GPT/MBR)
What do you suggest i do to preserve my Linux configuration as well as home assistant, just preserve the whole boot drive
proper backup strategy 🙂
Faith in hardware
rsnapshot, rclone, restic, kopia, duplicati, urbackup, ...
I backup data and configs. I don't have anything for my system configuration. And outside my laptop it also just matters less and less since I just throw things into containers and then backup their configuration
I boot my pi from sata m.2 with 5 ear warranty but you know how it is. If it breaks they replace your 50$ drive and give 0 shits about the data
I do want to setup kopia at some point though. Backup plan: the plan to setup a backup
I'll take a look thanks
uff, you mentioned the bad word
Raspberry pi 4B 8GB is OP
<1% CPU usage with cameras and like 6 switches
When i view both the HD streams usage is 5%
1080p@24fps
And USB3 & eithernet do not bottleneck one another anymore
Does HA utilize more cores for different integrations? Or is it all single-threaded?
There's a big difference if i can only utilize it to 25% or use all 4 cores to 100%
HA is multi-threaded
jealous?
damnit I got a resident racoon, thought they were passing through but I see the same one every night for the past week. if this bastard poops on my roof again gonna blow it's head off.
In discord if you put : raccoon : tags around words it all turns into trash
Two * is bold **bold** and two _ is underline __underline__
text with single is also italic though. strikethrough doesn't have a singles variant though

Jesus I hate the contractor UPS has for parcels here. They fail at their one job of delivering
Apparently they can just not acknowledge a redelivery request and that’s fine
Nah ups got it here super fast, they’re not the bad ones for once
Any idea why my router keeps dropping 2,4GHz radio? It just stops working and only 5GHz works. Log is going crazy.
Crappy router?
It's a 100$ Asus router
It works for a month, then this starts happening. Perhaps neighbor got illegal boosting antenna messing up my reception?
Lol consumer
I’ve lived in dense environments and never once had that issue. Your router should be able to change channel and not cause issues
Says the one who uses linksys velop. A consumer router
Not as a router mind you
Duh what else should i be? Enterprise?
I'm a fucking student with not much cash to spare
100$ is already a decent router
didn't know there was a curriculum for that
I had it set to auto, since every time i change my channel my neighbor does too -_-
I rebooted and didn't fix it so i changed it to channel 11 but that's again just a temporary fix
Quite annoying.
My old router didn't do that 🤔 changed from RT-N18U to RT-AC59U V2. Less powerful than the old one but had AC and fixed my issues with steam link tearing
Day off work, relaxing with some NSX-T refreshing
Nice toys you have for yourself theee
*there
Yes, I get easily distracted in my little kitchen

The Ikea lifestyle
Wait that’s an ikea one?
ugh I hate when you update/upgrade something and all hell breaks and it takes you an hour to figure out that the process wiped one small entry in a config file that you completely forgot you added years ago in the first place
slap dd-wrt or open-wrt on it
velop has been surprisingly solid for me. I wanted to try a mesh and I got dirt cheap but almost didn't buy cause atx said he had
Yeah I was only teasing him because of his ew consumer. I like them too
I do not like that it pushed for access outside of network and the pw restriction was a pain to get around. don't feel the need to have a 20 char password for internal only accessed devices
portainer just switched to required 12 char.. ughhhhhh
Wait pw restriction? My local internal password is 10 characters and they didn’t care
But yeah the remote access (although useful for me right now) is not great
yea it was like you needed atleast 8 chars and one had to be upper and another had to be a symbol or some crap
I got around having to do that but initially it was pushing for that
I don't use mine as a router just ap so I didn't want to deal with specialized pwd
Yeah right now it’s a router for my parents place until I can upgrade it. So remote access is useful too for that
is it the wifi5 one? why would you need to upgrade it?
Not upgrade the velop, upgrade the router aspect to something else being the firewall
ah
Velop can stay for wifi until the whole house networking gets done
Then it’ll be wifi Ap’s on the roof/ wall
i dunno why people push for that. really don't see the point
many of them now are designed to be compact and either sit on a bookshelf or just plug into an outlet
They’re wanting Ethernet to go in & move where server gear can sit. So may as well get fixed wired in APs
i would not want to try and add ethernet to a finished house lol
I added mine to this one when everything was tore back to the studs
It’s not too bad, just have to work around where things can be run down the walls
Roof space isn’t hard though
depends on the house i guess.. some may not be bad. mine would be an freaking nightmare
split level there is no simple up to down lol
Parents have decent gaps in the roof spaces (two story place) so shouldn’t be hard. The hardest will be running down the walls, but since there’s telephone jacks and tv cables already then we can just work in those areas
Might have to cut a hole in one part of the plaster, but they want a full repaint inside so not too bad
better pray there isn't any fire blocks
not sure what year(s) those came to be standard
The house was built in the 50-70s. Definitely not going to have them
oh yea your good
yea guess it would most certainly be different per country. atx will likely chime in and say norway has had them since the 1800's
And windows is the luxury suv next to the car? Fancy but overkill
I love that my bank has took it upon themselves to start checking my credit for any changes and to send me an email every month to say nothing has changed
Lol imagine caring about a credit score
I get that it's wise to keep an eye on it especially this day and age but at the same time, i don't feel like that is something people should be having on their minds on as they live their life. With the exception of those who had ruined theirs and trying to get back on their feet or someone new waiting for the day they can finally get a decent loan or something.
I check up on my report about every 12 months to make sure someone isn’t using it, the score itself doesn’t matter to me
well the score is an indicator if something is wrong or if something is going right
well it's tied to history and usage so it has to be used even in au for approval on some things
Not really
They care more on income
Credit score is “does this person have bad history” and that’s about it
well that's part of the score lol
Yeah they can look at the history for that
your score is a quick glance
Everyone here starts with excellent credit score
Not how in the USA you have to build it
so at 16 you can go in to dealer and buy an exotic expensive car on credit with no issues?
Well at 16 you can’t get credit at all, under law
But if you walked in at 18 and had an income that covered it then yes
then 18 or whatever you min age is lol
They care about your income more than anything
so you can get a job that pays well and on the same day buy something expensive on credit
i don't buy that at all
lol
I got a credit card after 1 paycheque from work. 6 grand limit (because we wanted guaranteed acceptance) but could probably get 10-15k
So after one paycheque yes
why do you spell it that way.. you make me rage
Because cheque is spelt that way?
another piece of proof that the british english sucks
Not really. Sounds better to write
it looks like someone having a stroke would write
Yes
'British' English
Do you know where the name America comes from
They don't even have their own Continent
And have to share the name with two continents
Imagine sharing your name with 34 other countries
what's your point?
we are the most diversified country in the world and we set the standards for many things partially due to that fact. Our population size is directly linked to people escaping their own in search of better pastures and with all of this diversity it is still majority agreed that our initial native language needed to evolve and it did. so again, british english sucks lol
https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/most-diverse-countries
USA isn't even in the top 50 (but then neither is the UK) most diverse countries
that study seems to base a lot of the score off the languages spoken
which skews things imo
they even pointed it out with brazil
Try this one, uses a lot more than language https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2013/07/18/the-most-and-least-culturally-diverse-countries-in-the-world/
that is the same exact thing tinkerer posted
nice, migrating my boot pool to zfs online
and with english being the most used language on the planet i mean kind of have us at a disadvantage lol
Whoops
But also, it’s not a key component of it?
All it is is saying that similar languages share common values
read what tinkerer posted
Not that languages are everything
they talk specifically about how language spoke effects score
Still nowhere near america being the most diverse though unlike what you said
Nothing seems to collaborate that
nothing shows otherwise either
whale squeak dosen't count
So if america is so diverse, and people are moving there, then why has there been so much hate and anger about people coming there
i know right
I feel like we're bursting at the seams
(Ignoring the fact that US nationality laws are some of the easiest in the world, be born there and you’re a citizen)
the hate stems from people not wanting the country to turn into a toilet. when you get to my age and see miles and miles of green beautiful land turn into parking lots and apartment complex's it kind leaves a bad taste in your mouth lol
it really dosen't feel that way
sweden and norway would be even worse then us
you guys would have a shit fit if people just flooded in and all your green poofed
How about you guys invest in public transport so you don’t need huge parking lots
And denser living in cities so you don’t need apartment blocks out whoop whoop
not really the point of what i was trying to convey lol
Except you can increase population without the urban sprawl
you cannot increase pop without losing something
just not possible
and ontop of losing stuff you also gain extra bad stuff
more trash, more pollution etc etc
Extra bad stuff being diversity and more people to work/ pay tax/ etc?
You can avoid the sprawl and losing space
at some point it's not about who can have the biggest workforce lol
I dunno. Seems to be the USA military motto lol
many many american's are small town type people.. they want to to remain that way
