@clear ferry why do people use RedHat

strange crag
wintry hazel
#

So I got given an old Clipsal C-Touch Colour screen that looks like it runs Windows XP Embedded... I wonder if I can change its OS and function to something useful to a modern smarthome

#

Or just see if its touchscreen ribbon connects to a pi :p

forest edge
#

ribbon connected to something proprietary most likely lol

wintry hazel
#

It's CBUS so literally anything goes

#

but honestly if I break it, I will be doing the world a favour. A network connected device running XP embedded is about as safe and secure as living in the caldera of a volcano\

forest edge

just need a usb port

wintry hazel

This little thang?

#

It would actually be cool. It’s got external monitor, serial/com port, ps/2 mouse or keyboard port, IR receiver, audio 3.5mm line in, the colour touchscreen, and about 3 RJ45s, although two are designated for cbus so who knows how they pin out

forest edge

uh if it has xp on it, it can run linux

manjaro will fit on anything lol

wintry hazel
#

I’m actually pretty confident that screen ribbon is not proprietary and/or this board is based on something existing

forest edge

dunno, tons of screen controller boards out there

I wouldn't waste my time with that tho, i'd slap something basic and just use it as a dashboard for HA or something

isn't dial up what other countries call "fiber"

clear ferry
#

No, starlink is what Americans call ftth

forest edge
#

I hear starlink is actually pretty good

umbral cliff
#

Australia we’ve had Cable internet since the late 90s

umbral cliff
#

So faster than dialup

forest edge
#

you might need to invest when norway caves in on itself and your all floating out to the alantic

clear ferry
#

We got cable modems in 97, it's long since dead, but I hear docsis 4 is now rolling out over the pond, now you can get 1600/4Mbit

forest edge
#

we don't actually need to torrent for anything worth having tho atx.. like tv shows, movies.. software

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

Oh shit

#

So 2004 tech

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

and?

umbral cliff
#

Docsis 3 could do quite fast. But in the real world no

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

Real world numbers of docsis are usually a lot lower

#

Just Bury 1200ft of cat5e

umbral cliff
#

Docsis 3.1 can do 10/1 (gigabit)

#

But in reality not gonna get that

forest edge
#

even if it's half it's still decent

#

was it like 10 down and 6 up or something

#

consumers don't need that much lol

umbral cliff
#

No it’s usually 50 megabit up max

#

And gigabit or two down

forest edge
#

we hit more than that now

umbral cliff
#

On HFC/ Cable?

#

What do you get

#

And what provider

forest edge
#

spectrum but they all offer it

#

trying to find what the upload speed is

#

ew 35

clear ferry
#

Exactly

forest edge
#

but then again that is plenty

umbral cliff
#

That’s my point. Upload is always terrible

clear ferry
#

Docsis is great for milking the consumers without upgrading the technology

forest edge
clear ferry
#

Just like 2.5G

#

🤢

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

Not really

umbral cliff
#

But no

clear ferry
#

It's a horrible technology

umbral cliff
#

Cable is a single copper core. It’s impressive we get the speeds we do on singular cable

forest edge
umbral cliff
#

People could get 2 gig symmetrical

clear ferry
#

Best effort real life for docsis 4 will probably be 2000/100

#

Which is ridiculous

forest edge
#

they are not going to rewire an entire infrastructure to fiber if they can milk coax for longer

clear ferry
#

There we go

#

Milking

umbral cliff
#

You have to admit that

#

People need download not upload

forest edge
#

truth is current speeds are fine for what we need

clear ferry
#

It has way to many pitfalls and variables to be decent enough

forest edge
#

if your doing buisness you get a buisness line which can do what you need

umbral cliff
#

In australia the HFC network was a good stop gap to save money at first. It was FTTN which was crap

#

Well is crap

#

Because the copper was never maintained so it’s shit from the node to you

dusky plank
#

it comes with a fairly high latency cost too, speed alone isn't all

clear ferry
dusky plank
#

0ms gang represent 🙌

umbral cliff
#

I’m from australia, sub 10ms to the rest of the world doesn’t exist 😂

clear ferry
#

Sub10

#

That is optimistic of you

umbral cliff
#

Lmao

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

if we're talking gaming latency I sit around 20's

clear ferry
#

Lol 20

umbral cliff
#

100-300 for me for us/ uk servers

forest edge
#

I can connect to china with 50

clear ferry
#

I remember having 100-150 to the US in 2002

#

Norwegian servers at the time was 5-10

forest edge
#

well local is way lower

#

but cross country is around 20's

#

only when i go outside of the states does it rise

clear ferry
#

Most servers were across the country

#

I have around 4ms to my father's house, 2500km away

#

Don't think I've ever had above 5 internally in Norway the last decade

forest edge
#

anything below 100 is barley noticable regardless

umbral cliff
#

Ping to Sydney is 8ms. Not bad when on wifi and streaming video (fibre from modem)

forest edge
#

those speeds

#

gross

umbral cliff
#

Don’t need any more

clear ferry
#

My 300/300 connection on wireless

umbral cliff
#

It would be a waste of money

clear ferry
umbral cliff
#

Then my ping to Perth

#

@forest edge no point in paying for more than you need. You said that before about how docsis is perfectly fine for people

forest edge
#

remind me to never play on au servers

clear ferry
#

Give me the IP to that Perth server @umbral cliff

umbral cliff
forest edge
umbral cliff
#

So I get more

forest edge
#

and that is.. how much

umbral cliff
#

Oh you mean price?

#

$99/ month. Because australia there lol

#

Split between 3 not too bad

forest edge
#

$99 au bucks or us?

glacial knot
#

Do you have to rent part of the intercontinental lines with that price? 😄

umbral cliff
orchid rose
clear ferry
#

Selected Perth in speed test

orchid rose
#

no wait milliseconds, not micro

umbral cliff
clear ferry
umbral cliff
orchid rose
#

someone check my maffs, is it 8ms for 2500km

forest edge
#

so you pay around $138(us) for 100/20 and I pay about $60 for 350/30(us) so... at some point a consumer should atleast pay fair price for the speeds they get even if those speeds are enough for thier needs lol

orchid rose
#

we'd have much better pings to US if we could get cables from lapland to canada instead of going all the way south

umbral cliff
#

So… twice the speed of sound?

orchid rose
#

needs to go the 2500km twice

#

since it needs to come back too

last cedar
umbral cliff

So 4 times then

#

It’s the research network

forest edge
#

closer? he lives on the alantic cable lol

clear ferry
#

Let me check aarnet

umbral cliff
#

You lot go straight to australia

#

He goes either via the USA (thus you’re closer to Perth) or he goes via Asia (which is slower)

clear ferry
#

13500km

forest edge
#

his distance to the node is much closer

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

no

umbral cliff
#

What did you mean

forest edge
#

I don't even see norway in the list

#

give something close atx

clear ferry
#

Oslo

umbral cliff
#

You just need to look up town names

#

@clear ferry what’s the best Oslo server

clear ferry
#

They are all great

#

It's Norway remember

forest edge
clear ferry
dusky plank
#

i got 30 ms to oslo

umbral cliff
#

Yeah but we’re talking milliseconds

#

290 here lol

dusky plank
#

203 to perth

umbral cliff
#

The only ping competition I’ll win is if it’s within australia

forest edge
#

the take away I see here with all the images is atx's connection outside of norway is not much better than coax lol

#

higher upload speed but not by a whole lot

clear ferry
#

Why would I ever connect outside of Norway, this is why we have CDNs

umbral cliff
#

To be honest though. Whatever internet hardware is used, as long as it does everything you want reliably then it doesn’t matter

#

My grandma could live on adsl and wait for buffering streams

orchid rose
#

This would be nice

forest edge
#

in gaming eye whatever allows you to play on other country servers without shit ping is end goal

clear ferry
#

Lol playing across continents

forest edge
#

people connect to US all the time

#

especially asia

clear ferry
#

Damn hackers

forest edge
#

thankfully they connect here, not the other way around

clear ferry
umbral cliff
#

A lot of the servers I play on are based in Europe (though I also game mostly with European friends) which makes things… fun

orchid rose
#

I used to play a game that had this one russian guy from Vladivostok playing on European servers. Apparently he got a better ping there than the Chinese servers

forest edge
#

plus au dosen't have much of shit lol

umbral cliff
orchid rose
#

Icelandic servers would be fine for both Americans and Europeans for most games if there was better cables. Right now the speed of light just screws us

forest edge
#

thankfully most everything is US based for us so we don't have to deal with any of that

orchid rose
#

Well it would be more fun to have Americans around

forest edge
#

east coast players do play on euro servers

#

alot

#

but pacific coast players do not lol

orchid rose
#

Sure but any competitive game and it sucks for both if you play across the pond

forest edge
#

dpends on the game, i play a game called rust on euro server from time to time and have no issues

orchid rose
#

UK gets sub 100ms, but I'm somewhere around 150ms already

forest edge
#

shit like call of duty would suck tho for me

clear ferry
#

Just play hearts

forest edge
#

too bad the original doom didn't have a huge online multiplayer thing.. atx might actually be bitching about his interwebs

clear ferry
#

Well

#

I played doom online

#

Over dialup

forest edge
#

lol

clear ferry
#

It was a thing

#

Albeit we started with LAN parties in 96

forest edge
#

yup, while everyone else went off to play more modren shit, you just stuck with the original doom all by your lonesome

clear ferry
#

And we had broadband from 97

#

So it really wasn't an issue

forest edge
#

sit at home bragging about your coax speeds with original doom lol

clear ferry
#

It's not our fault our network speeds in 97 is similar to your modern stuff

forest edge
clear ferry
forest edge
#

your download speed is pretty close to mine and your upload speed is pointless lol

clear ferry
#

So having 1000/1000 available since 2015 is similar to your 330/15 mbit is the same?

forest edge
#

i mean. google fibre is 1000/1000

#

just because I don't have it dosen't mean the speeds aren't available

#

I kind of wish I did just to see what my speed test would be to au and oslo etc lol

forest edge
clear ferry
#

So, my current 370/330 on a 300/300 is the same as your 330/15 then, is that what you are saying?

forest edge

#

#

usually that shit is for buisness class only

clear ferry
#

Think the Swedes have had 10g available for consumers since 2013 or something

forest edge
#

we probably wouldn't even have some of this shit avail if it weren't for those people in maine who created thier own fibre network just for thier small town lol

#

wtf you norwats were paying over 80 bucks for adsl?

#

I feel like the norway wiki is missing some vital information lol

#

that or you guys really did go from shoe string to fibre in just a few years

#

although if adsl was 80, the holy shit 1000/1000 fiber must have costs more than your house

clear ferry
#

We got 10/10 fiber in 2004 for $40 a month

#

The docsis stuff in 1997 was 768/96 or something

#

1000/1000 is currently $150 a month if I remember

forest edge

dosen't it make you feel all warm inside that the US is the reason the world has internet?

orchid rose

1999 ADSL would have cost 161-217€/mo, yikes

clear ferry

For Home Assistant, do u guys like Alexa or Google Home better? I have both to try out, will return one this week but we cant make a decision!

forest edge
#

rather than picking on based on how well it interacts with HA (which can always change) I would look up which one does what you would use it for the most (aside from HA control) because they both excel at diffrent things

errant path
#

hahahahahaaaa

#

thats hilarious

hallow willow
#

I prefer google home assistant because it has a switch to turn the microphone off, which actually cuts power to the microphone. With Alexa I believe the microphone is always powered

#

Also, Google speaks my language, while Alexa is just english

clear ferry
#

I prefer Google because Amazon isn't a thing here

errant path
#

which does integrate best with HA? I like things about both lol I need someone to be the decision maker.

Alexa has more 'conversations' with you, shes an ugly sphere though. She tries to 'learn you' and can pair with more devices. She hears even over the TV better and she does actually have a power off button (ontop). The notifications for every amazon thing gets a bit tiring though.

Google is more beautiful asthetically, it has better audio and pairs with the google search engine, but aside from looks and sound I think the brains behind it is kinda dumb, it also has a hard time hearing us over the tv.

fallow karma

There are rumors that some of Google speakers have spoken my language

forest edge
clear ferry

clear ferry

かわいい

errant path
#

yeah but we like being able to ask google/alexa to set a certain like scene, blue lights for example

forest edge
clear ferry
#

Why not set a scene based on a button or a specific time of day + button or if person X is home and person y is gone and time of day

errant path
#

really? how so?

#

I liked that alexa has like an AI built in, shes trying to understand I guess. or maybe it just gives off the appearance of such things?

BTW can Home Assistant somehow allow Google to notify you if your fire alarm goes off? I know Alexa has that built in, as well as baby crying

clear ferry
#

Sure, if you have smart fire alarms

errant path
#

the scene is more for like 'okay movie night!' or if we want to know how far something is we ask google, or if we want to know when something closes if we are running out of the house to do errands we have x y z

#

yeah im in an appartment, no smart fire alarms. was hoping there was something to say 'hey - I HEAR an alarm' and notify

#

alexa has that built in apparently

forest edge
#

way cheaper alternative lol

clear ferry
#

Lol wyze

forest edge
#

it works great i tested it. it will pick up the alarm from 2 floors away

clear ferry
#

Wyze isn't even supported by HA anymore, because they were dicks last i checked

#

Unofficial API

#

Very promising

hallow willow
#

we do have amazon and Alexa and stuff

hallow willow
forest edge
#

apparently alexa can do the sound thing for fire alarms too

errant path
#

wowww thats impressive! yeah wyze is madd cheap!!

forest edge
#

thats neat

errant path
#

yeah alexa and google both are F'ed up with their users

forest edge
#

alexa guard is what they call it

errant path
#

right now it annoys me to no end that my husband set it up, and now I dont have access to the home assistant stuff we add, so he has to manually add it.

#

how do u do the duplicate house?

hallow willow
#

You can just assign devices to a different house in your app

errant path
#

interesting...

hallow willow
#

You could also just keep 1 user but that means google can't learn your voice for example, so you can't have routines per user.

errant path
#

idk, husband likes google, I like alexa now. I wish I could put alexa in the google looking pill shaped device

#

exactly yeah thats annoying too

hallow willow
#

Why not use them both 😄

errant path
#

cuz i already have homepod so I can have it track our iphone locations lol

#

so Im like maxed out with these things

forest edge
#

wtf both google and alexa want a subscription fee for that sound detection stuff.. f that

errant path
#

yeah exactly, wyze is a much better solution for that

forest edge
#

yea it's free aside from the cost of the camera.. just buy a v2 if all you use it for is the sound detect

errant path
#

right yeah i have aqara cameras i love very much

hallow willow
#

What do you mean with the sound detection stuff

errant path
#

but have had the worst time trying to get them integrated into home assistant

#

right now its integrated via homekit on HA but its VERY CHOPPYY

#

sound detection = tell me when the fire alarm is going off and im not home

forest edge
clear ferry
forest edge
#

I mean, that can be said about any product

hallow willow
#

Couldn't you just buy a zigbee smoke sensor and have an automation in Home Assistant to trigger a sound file through the house?

clear ferry
#

Well, "unofficial API" isn't a great selling point

forest edge
#

don't need to even intergrate it into HA for that

errant path
#

smoke sensor isnt a bad idea

clear ferry
#

How often do you have fires? I have 12 smoke detectors in my house, last time one was triggered was probably 2010, because I burned something in the oven while cooking dinner

forest edge
#

you know they go bad right?

#

maybe you hadn't one trigger cause none of yours is still able to work lol

clear ferry
#

Sure, we replace them every 10 years, and batteries once a year

#

We test them at least twice a year

forest edge
#

so every 10 years your buying expensive "smart" alarms that don't ever go off

#

when you could just replace one device

#

that makes cheap alarms smart

clear ferry
#

No, i don't use smart alarms

forest edge
#

oh

clear ferry
#

I have one, on my 3d printer though

#

But the ones I have now are wirelessly connected

#

Was an offer through the insurance Company

forest edge
#

tidal bronze
forest edge
#

I have those, those are still dumb expensive compared to normal ones

#

I wanted them cause they speak and tell you which one was triggered

clear ferry

They cost $10 each with the deal

forest edge
#

mine are like 50 a pop

clear ferry
tidal bronze
#

Print at brim speed so no need for smoke alarms.

forest edge
#

did cali's just remove theirs all together? I would imagine with the state being on fire so much they would get annoying

errant path
#

late gate

I prefer alexa, but using google

tidal bronze

Had Alexa back in the day. GA now, and all day.

late gate
#

I prefer the wake word alexa is easier to say, and I feel alexa understand better non us speakers (even if I speak english at home I notice a difference)

#

speed I feel alexa is also a bit faster on local control

#

but that could be some nabu casa issue as I get a lot of nabu casa issues (cant reach nabu casa errors)

fallow karma
hallow willow

but you should just go with whatever fits your needs the most. I like the fact you can give Alexa multiple names like echo or dot. With google it's just "hey google"

@fallow karma I have not even turned on my mk3s in a year so I might sell the whole thing

errant path

thanks guys!

hallow willow

So guys I was just wondering, I want to intergrate google with home assistant. Should I go the manual route or go the Nabu Casa route?

clever mortar
#

Yes zany

#

#integrations-archived can guide you further, but it depends on whether you want to pay for the easy button, or get it free for a little work

late gate
#

I dont know, but maybe a speed difference with manual route as you can do a server very close, but I have not tried it. I use Nabu Casa for supporting HA

tidal bronze
# errant path yeah why?

For me GA much better at handling commands. Speed, both were equally fast. Mainly I like how GA integrates with android, don't have to unlock to issue a voice command. I rarely use it now but prefer GA. If you have to issue voice commands all day then you are not using HA as you are supposed to. 😀

forest edge
#

I want to see the injection mold for those 3M picture hanging velco strips. that's gotta be some black magic type shit right there

late gate
#

@tidal bronze I always have issues GA just think for 10-15 seconds after a command, then turn on the lights and say "could not talk to nabu casa for home assistant" or something

tidal bronze
#

I don't use NC. Direct integration, been like that from get go.
