i need to wait a good minute until my projector and its android tv started

hoary canyon
#

Wifi upgrade incoming 👀

finite atlas
#

for a second i thought, that its a dishy

jade tartan
#

@hoary canyon how far do those reach? i have an older ap lite

hoary canyon
#

Excited to get the new WiFi 6 Pros in

jade tartan
#

word

hoary canyon
#

The AC Pros just weren't enough to handle my gig speed

#

🤣

jade tartan
#

i miss gig/gig

#

was good times

hoary canyon
#

Did you cancel, or did ya move?

jade tartan
#

move

hoary canyon
#

ah that sucks

jade tartan
#

were on ftth but it's only 100/100

hoary canyon
#

Local company i'm assuming?

jade tartan
#

yep

hoary canyon
#

They seem to be picky sometimes

#

other times they can be great

jade tartan
#

right?

#

oh well

hoary canyon
#

I think we pay like $70/mo for ATT Fiber 1000

jade tartan
#

yeah was 79 here

hoary canyon
#

Hopefully it performs better than this through a couple of walls 👀

jade tartan
#

my profession is running eth basicly

#

so i hardwire everything

#

if it has a port

hoary canyon
#

Yeah most stuff in my network is hardwired

#

but I still want fast wifi lol

scenic radish
#

Yeah, I don't see a real need for max download speed over WiFi personally

hoary canyon
#

I don't really have a need for it, but I just like to see gigabit over wifi 🤣

scenic radish
hoary canyon
#

and I needed to extend range to the outside of my house so I figured why not upgrade them and use the AC Pros for outside

jade tartan
#

i know it's pointless and dumb

#

but i want a whole ubiquiti system

#

cameras

#

door access

#

all of it

#

i just am seeing they have door access which is neat

hoary canyon
#

Cameras are overpriced IMO

#

The door access is cool though

#

I would personally use Reolink/Amcrest with Frigate NVR

static schooner
#

I had an AC pro outside for a while and eventually it failed and brought down my whole network until I removed it. I had it in a fake rock

jade tartan
#

blue iris, amcrest

#

cause it worked well for me

#

deff needed to re set server to have a raid of ssd's to initally record all the 1080p30 streams, and then if motion move file to HDD

#

cause i had it direct to the hdd's and they didnt like that too much

#

constant writing to random old DVR drives i ripped outa old units

#

BREH

hoary canyon
jade tartan
#

wtf

hoary canyon
#

I have conduit running outside for the ISP so I'll just run it through there

jade tartan
#

they have solar stuff

#

@hoary canyon lololol

#

naaaaaaa

#

they arnt overpriced at all

hoary canyon
#

when I can get an Amcrest color night vision for like $150 lmao

jade tartan
#

amcrest had a ptz for like less then 400

#

with 12x optical

#

lol

hoary canyon
#

lol

#

I wonder if my 802.3af injector will temporarily power the APs

#

I think they are 802.3At though

scenic radish
#

I like my amcrest cams

#

Four of them deployed recording 24/7 with frigate

#

I want to get at least 2 more

hoary canyon
#

@jade tartan you seen this? more to add to your list 🤣

jade tartan
#

i'd love one of those to use for HA

#

obviously i assume were both talking about the display

#

not the mount

#

lol

jade tartan
#

HMMMMM

#

i want to wire up this esp8266 to this small LCD so i can have it display status messages

dusky plank
#

and I want to get connection logs out of my wireguard

glacial knot
#

Get a log when a peer connects first? Or what kind of logs?

dusky plank
#

yes

#

or some kind of failed connection message

glacial knot
#

I think wireguard doesn't do those

dusky plank
#

yup

glacial knot
#

you'll have to either whip something up with ebpf (I'll do it for 50/h€ in probably 2 to 3 hours) or try to correlate iptables/conntrack logs with changes in the peer table of the tunnel

dusky plank
#

before I do any of that I will fork the source and put the logs in place myself 😄

Interesting, the new power payment plan for Norway is based on your level of payment is based on the time of day you use the most power, so then it would make sense to do an automation that turns off all my heat pumps when we cook dinner

Hey there!
So it is going to happend, I am going to buy a flat! 🙂
A flat that needs to be renovated, so I can go full smart home from the ground up.
I would Like to use HA as the brain I think it is awsome, the key values are great, so the future is promising.
So far I wanted to use a ton of shelly 4pm pro-s. But I just came across KNX protocoll.
My guestion is that is there somebody that used any knx device with HA? Can I get some inputs. Are they better than shelly? Does the worth the price differences? 🙂 Can someone recommend me a knx manufaturer and produts?
Thank guys!

why not just use an app to keep your shopping list on? heck they can sync with multiple people and it's always there to add/remove/change

because most apps with tailored features cost money? duh 🤷‍♂️ 😅

tailored it's a list lol

The web panel for iCloud isn’t too bad

glacial knot
#

I have my outlook (work) icloud and personal cloud stuff all separate as 3 different accounts on the phone

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

oh, I had a very specific bug. I was just annoyed that they can't be arsed to fix their CSP headers. and they told me that it's not on the roadmap =.= So the Notes in iCloud break in weird ways

umbral cliff
#

How do they break?

#

But also not surprised if its a weird error only <1% of their users experience

glacial knot
#

some of the embeds don't load because they violate CSP

#

if you use the "scan document" option, that embeds the cropped/corrected page into the notes
Those have a different file type, which isn't in the CSP whitelist for the domain they fetch them from

umbral cliff
#

What file type do they use

#

But weird

#

That actually sounds like something that should be fixed

glacial knot
#

I don't remember what it was

forest edge
#

apple 🤢

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

that they don't o.0

#

Apple is good when you want to follow their intended flows
But for the "Think different" slogan their products are surprisingly bad at allowing anything but that one intended good path

forest edge
#

apple is a price gouging, feature locking, proprietary peripheral company that literally designs on the quote, "people are idiots".

umbral cliff
#

I dunno you can still get a lot of use outside of what their lock in is. Want to use Gmail app as the default mail app? Sure go ahead. Covers most of the bases for what I want to do on a phone

forest edge
#

and that wasn't always the case

umbral cliff
#

Wireless charging is open standard. iPads use usb C, its all open

forest edge
#

it's also not a 100% guarantee

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

now, as in this very minute but tomorrow

#

might be a diffrent story

umbral cliff
#

Just like anything

#

Things may change

forest edge
#

no my android phone will always connect to gmail lol

umbral cliff
#

Nor do I think they would ever remove setting default apps

forest edge
#

apple dosen't make decisions on what users use or think

#

they never have

#

never will

#

to them you are an idiot

umbral cliff
#

But androids aren’t all glory as you make it out to be, like how new Samsung’s remove the ability to use the camera if you root the device

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

samsung is not android

umbral cliff
#

They run android

#

They are an example of one of the most popular android brands

forest edge
#

that dosen't make them android or google

#

anyone can take someone else's software and change it

#

look at linux

umbral cliff
#

So basically you’re saying you can only go with pixels if you want android. otherwise you’re not running android

#

and you can only judge pixels?

forest edge
#

no

#

just saying you can't fault android for what samsung does

umbral cliff
#

No but its an example for how android isn’t all glory though. When someone thinks of an android phone they think either a) samsung, b) one of the major chinese brands, c) pixel

#

A lot of the others aren’t immediately thought of

#

Thus making samsung a good example of how things change

forest edge
#

that's not true

#

in the least

#

samsung is just a company amongst many that use android

#

would be like faulting android for what Huawei done with it before they were cut off lol

umbral cliff
#

*one of the largest

#

I would judge windows laptops/ prebuilts based on the largest manufacturers and microsoft themselves

forest edge
#

but with android you have choices, options. you are not forced down a narrow path with whatever one companies decided to throw you a bone lol

umbral cliff
#

Curious what option is so important that only exists on android?

forest edge
#

and if you don't like samsung's choices, root the phone and presto.. you can do whatever you want lol

umbral cliff
#

So not do whatever you want

forest edge
#

I don't believe that

#

there are always ways

forest edge
#

but regardless, so don't pick samsung if that's an issue for you

umbral cliff
# forest edge I don't believe that

For whatever reason, Samsung is constantly trying to discourage people from rooting its phones. Unlocking the bootloader on a Samsung device voids its warranty, breaks the Knox security system, and disables important features like Samsung Pay. But the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s anti-rooting measures go a bit too far—its cameras stop working if you unlock...

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

So?

#

why would you evaluate your choices on a majority?

umbral cliff
#

Because if the large guys don’t make change then it won’t really happen at all

#

Look at how they all follow each other

#

So i judge them because they are the ones who need to improve in what they do

glacial knot
#

Not really?

forest edge
#

he's so use to apple ecosystem he can't imagine a world where software and hardware can be done through diffrent companies

glacial knot
#

There's always been feature sand gimicks on both phones and laptops that the large vendors don't do

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

well noone defends them that don't

umbral cliff
#

But yes. It’s pretty obvious companies like HP/ Dell copy each other too

glacial knot
#

with how much you demonstrate that you don't know other ecosystems /shrug

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

HP 😂

umbral cliff
#

Like how they don’t swap to usb c

forest edge
#

they are the epicenter of shitty decisions

umbral cliff
#

So…

#

Remember most people have no clue what they’re buying

forest edge
#

cause they are in part right, people are idiots lol

umbral cliff
#

I judge all companies which put shitty things out

#

Refused to get a mac because of the terrible keyboard. Still don’t have one

#

That was a terrible idea

#

And still unsure with M1 to be able to run other OSes easily

forest edge
#

if apple actually listened and cared about thier users the single ecosystem would sound appealing, however because they just do what they want and don't care about you at all, thier system is trash as you said, they don't implement things people ask for etc

#

they are the only company still fighting with all thier might the right to repair lol

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

Asahi Linux is making great progress

umbral cliff
#

Fighting it through allowing it

#

(For once they actually are doing things good with right to repair)

forest edge
#

they are doing the bare minimal to shut some people up lol

static schooner
glacial knot
glacial knot
#

No

#

it's not a program for any single person

umbral cliff
#

I still support the OS flagging screen/ battery replacements that aren’t done with apple check because buying a used phone you want to know a repair was done. Seen plenty of friends who got an OLED replaced with LCD because they saved money

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

you should really give the other side a try, i think your eyes would pop out of your head

umbral cliff
#

available to individual consumers

#

I’m sure it’s only for companies and they would say that right

umbral cliff
umbral cliff
#

Gotta love the <12 months of support that android makers used to do

#

(Granted that is improving at least)

forest edge
#

your the only person in the world who bricked a phone updating lol

umbral cliff
#

Doubt that

forest edge
#

you gots apple fingers

umbral cliff
#

Pretty easy to brick the shitty androids that are sold

#

Like the ones that are sold by carriers for sub $200-300

forest edge
#

then don't buy the shitty ones lol

umbral cliff
#

Yay I spend as much as an iPhone then

#

And I don’t get long term updates

#

And resale value drops

forest edge
#

what do you mean by long term

#

will the phone last for 20 years? no phone does lol

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

in all honsety hardware tends to break down before support ends lol

umbral cliff
#

Only batteries really. Easily replaced (either $50 at a cheap store or $80 through apple, or however much the batteries will be and do them yourself)

#

Great for passing phones down to parents or grandparents or kids to keep them used

forest edge
#

when you buy an android phone from like samsung you are buying samsungs version of android, not googles android. you get the support that they offer, not what google offers. my pixel 3 is still going strong and i get the latest android near instantly when it releases and it runs flawlessly but on a samung phone you don't have that option cause samsung has to release thier own update

umbral cliff
#

So you’re locked into only buying google pixels then

forest edge
#

if your phone bricked, it's the comnpany you bought the phone from fault

#

not androids

glacial knot
#

The unified kernel hopefully also fixes some of that whole support split

#

ehh. Update capability should really be part of the OS
Unless they pushed a faulty update, that's on android

umbral cliff
#

Specially that model of cpu

glacial knot
#

which says nothing

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

not to mention companies like samsung don't want thier phones to be updated by google.. they want full control

umbral cliff
#

Which is bad. When android xyz appears I want to be able to update to it natively

#

No rooting or whatever to do it

forest edge
#

thus why I bought a pixel lol

glacial knot
umbral cliff
#

It’s a good advantage of iOS. Instant updates too

forest edge
#

they all mess with every aspect of the OS

umbral cliff
#

Doubt they mess with updates though. There’s no need

forest edge
#

unless something has changed the android on samsung phones do not check with googl;es update servers at all.. all that comes from a server samsung controls

umbral cliff
#

Yeah they issue the updates. Doesn’t mean the mess with how updates are installed or given

#

Would be changing the address

forest edge
#

point is, if your having an issue with android and it's not from Google then it's like bitching about Linux on a Dell PC etc

glacial knot
#

update server is a wildly different change from messing with the actual update process

forest edge
#

or Windows on a asus

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

The responsibility of providing drivers is a constant fight though

forest edge
#

the windows was a bad example to use.. the linux example is better fitting

umbral cliff
#

Even Linux I would complain to the distro if the drivers didn’t work

#

Since that’s their stuff to sort out

forest edge
#

you know apple is linux right?

umbral cliff
#

BSD but yes

#

It’s the big advantage of MacOS over windows

#

Easier for code, etc with the program support of windows

#

(Since wine just isn’t as good as people make out)

forest edge
#

proprietary garbage

umbral cliff
#

Depending on your workflow sometimes you have to suck up and accept that proprietary programs exist too

forest edge
#

there really isn't any

#

this day in age there isn't a single piece of software that you cannot find some sort of open source software that does mostly the same thing

umbral cliff
#

For me it was mainly around academic stuff. Endnote & word is the top tier combination for essays and referencing

#

Or some programs I’ve had to use in my computer science degree too

forest edge
#

if you find yourself having to pay for software to do stuff you want to do then you need to learn how to google better lol

umbral cliff
#

Most things have academic discounts or are completely free

glacial knot
#

what software did you need during your degree? o.0

umbral cliff
#

Probably a few proprietary programs that I just didn’t look into

glacial knot
#

I'd have to look up what we used for FPGAs, but I do know that it was free

umbral cliff
#

Yeah vivado is free

#

Just proprietary

glacial knot
#

that's not free then

umbral cliff
#

If you don’t have to pay anything then that makes it free

#

open source vs proprietary does not mean free vs paid

glacial knot
#

free vs. non-free

#

there's a clear definition of free software

umbral cliff
#

Free means no need to spend money. That’s what most people use

forest edge
#

no

#

open source free is not the same as software given to you without exchange of money

umbral cliff
#

Then there’s been plenty of them that I’ve used

#

Because either a) required, b) easier to use, or c) just works in my workflow

#

I don’t get making your life painful just to avoid anything ‘non-free’

glacial knot
#

sounds like you went to a sucky school ¯_(ツ)_/¯

forest edge
#

you don't make your life painful by avoiding paid software. it's just the fact that there are option of free that are mostly just as good as paid.. heck in some cases even surpases the paid variant

#

Gimp for example has come a very long way lol

umbral cliff
#

Where’s paid coming into it. Plenty of free of charge but proprietary software though

glacial knot
#

Really? Last I used Gimp was a great example of why we need more UX designers in free software

forest edge
#

LibreOffice office is even more prefered over MS's by alot of people

umbral cliff
#

Ugh I hate libreoffice. It just can’t do what it should easily

#

It butchers conversions from word

#

And no extensions to allow referencing easily

forest edge
glacial knot
#

yes, microsoft doesn't follow their own published document standards

umbral cliff
#

Also the fact that academic work requires times new Roman. Which requires some hacky way to add it to Linux too

#

But still extensions in word make it easy

forest edge
#

you can install libreoffice on windows..

#

openoffice as well for that matter

umbral cliff
#

And still misses the extensions part

#

When they’re both the same price ($0) it’s easier to go with the more supported one

forest edge
#

If you dug yourself into a hole using a proprietary software obviously open source is going to have some issues, which is why you don't start out using proprietary just like buying apple products.. just say no at the begining and life becomes golden

glacial knot
turbid stirrup
#

Is M$ office also $0 nowadays?
Time to finally uninstall the sucky libre office. It just can't cope with big Excel sheets it seems.

glacial knot

i think ms office ONLINE is free

umbral cliff
umbral cliff
glacial knot
turbid stirrup
umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

sucks to be you I guess

forest edge
#

it's only free cause they want you to become dependant on it

umbral cliff
#

Given most businesses also use word, etc I don’t care

turbid stirrup
#

With proprietary software... If it's free, you're the product.

#

And I am, no doubts about that.

umbral cliff
turbid stirrup
#

True
In this example of students getting to use office for free it's more of a gateway drug :)

Only reason MS offers products to student is to get them used to them before they start working

umbral cliff
turbid stirrup
#

Yup

umbral cliff
#

There are huge expenses to running FOSS in businesses. Given the support just isn’t to the level of MSFT

glacial knot
#

the amount of word used in business contexts is less than a simple markup editor can do ¯_(ツ)_/¯

turbid stirrup
#

True
Excel and PowerPoint however....

umbral cliff
#

You can be the one to teach people how to transition though. And to provide the <24hr support that’s also provided with msft

turbid stirrup
#

(Access used to be up there, it needs to die in a nuclear accident)

turbid stirrup
glacial knot
#

dunno for powerpoint. All the presentation training I have points towards not using animations or other stuff. So it's actually a slideshow. Which again, removes pretty much every feature that you can't pick up in minutes

#

And PP is awefully slow. I've switched back to beamer for the last one I did 😄

umbral cliff
#

(Was in academia doing my undergrad degree - including some research - until this semester. Just graduated woot)

Take your latex back to fetlife, I won't kinkshame ;)

umbral cliff
#

There’s a reason why my desktop is now running Linux only too

glacial knot
#

proper figure tracking and automatic updates of indices/ToC and similar stuff is why I dislike word for any serious work

#

it's an ok tool for something that needs structure and should be edited by multiple people
But for anything serious it starts being slow and clunky. And for simple stuff, it shared scratchpad or simple markup will be worth more

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

TeX always had better referencing than word o.0

umbral cliff
#

Word benefits from endnote being a one click reference

#

And academic journals have one click add to endnote

#

I spend 0 time doing the referencing with that

glacial knot
#

all relevant ones have snippets for bibtex

turbid stirrup
#

I dislike word as I dislike writing documentation other than comments in code. I've written my own bash usage function to automatically include a -h help text grepped from the script itself. Shrugs

glacial knot
#

the amount of time to insert the reference information is about the same as clicking through it in word. And it's nicer to use in the document

umbral cliff
#

Its also commonly accepted in academic work so makes endnote sharing easy

glacial knot
#

what? it's literally a copy paste of a snippet on the journal pages.

umbral cliff
#

So you copy and paste instead of 2 clicks

glacial knot
#

I know. It's almost up to bibtex 😄

umbral cliff
#

That’s time I don’t often have

glacial knot
#

with 20 references? you got a lot of time left 😂

umbral cliff
#

In <5 minutes?

#

Including submitting online

glacial knot
#

you are writing your papers in 5 minutes?

umbral cliff
#

(Also bibtex just doesn’t have a graphical or auto fill for references. You have to know the author name and number)

umbral cliff
#

Never said I was an organised student 😅

glacial knot
#

what? You go through your entire text to enter the proper citations at the end? Do you like to suffer?

glacial knot
umbral cliff
#

Since it’s just text editor

glacial knot
#

vim? Weird question
And that has extensions to do auto-complete

glacial knot
# umbral cliff Yes

Sounds dumb. I just added my references when I had them open. Since it’s 0 pain to do so

umbral cliff
#

But like just worked for me

#

So just left it

glacial knot
#

Do you not put the reference in text? Or direct quote? I’m so confused
Did you literally just add a list at the end as further reading?
I’d never go through the code and try to figure out which reference was for what part afterwards

umbral cliff
#

Reference in text. Just in the essay put [cite] and then afterwards control-F and find anything saying cite and add them

#

I do my essays weirdly but it works

#

Finished two degrees and have good grades

#

(And a grad job starting in a month)

#

Plus in uni I just want to get it done and do well. I don’t want to lose marks on formatting or referencing or anything like that too

glacial knot
#

just never claim your workflows are better than (bib)TeX if that's your actual workflow 😂 ¯_(ツ)_/¯

umbral cliff
#

Again my point about I’ll use whatever software works with my workflow regardless of if it’s FOSS or paid or closed source

#

I will give foss software a go, not going to be bound by only using it

So, containers on a macvlan network can't communicate with a server running natively on the host, huh? Well, a separate container running socat says otherwise.

glacial knot
#

That's my experience as well

#

though apparently driver/hardware dependent whether the macvlan devices will be able to directly communicate with each other/the host

low harness
#

It's pretty clear from the documentation that it shouldn't work. But this is a nice workaround: yaml apcupsd: image: alpine/socat restart: unless-stopped command: "TCP4-LISTEN:3551,fork,reuseaddr TCP4:172.17.0.1:3551"

#

Then the container on the macvlan (which is also on the default network) can just connect to apcupsd:3551 instead of host:3551 and things work transparently.

glacial knot
#

hm? Socat as proxy in the container/on the macvlan virtual bridge to provide the host port?

low harness
#

On the compose network. I'm running hass in a docker-compose without host networking (not recommended), but that means it can't communicate with the apcups daemon which I want running natively on the host.
Earlier I "fixed" this by having apcupsd running as agent on another machine on the network and connect to that instead.

#

And besides adding potential points of failure, that made the status "ONLINE SLAVE" rather than "ONLINE".
Overall this feels more stable.

left wharf
#

Will cutting the power to a compressor style dehumidifier damage the machine? I am considering controlling the on-off circle using a smart plug and an external environment sensor instead of the built-in control.

low harness
#

Could be. I'd assume it has some kind of "defrost" cycle or such that may need to be run occasionally and I'd guess some choose to normally do so before going into standby.

left wharf
#

Thanks thomas. You are probably right. My basement is at 15-17C at the moment. Might get colder deeper into the winter. Still I'm more worried about the induction motor in there. Only if my dumb dehumidifier has more control options...

#

On second thought, the machine does going to standby after reaching a threshold. And my plug has power metering. I can probably cook up some automation to cut the power at standby with these condition.

umbral cliff
#

Or if it has a remote, ir/ rf sender

left wharf
#

It doesn't have a remote. Only a on/off switch and some buttons to set a basic threshold. Come to think of it. Pressing the off button cut the power abruptly. Waiting for it to go into standby then cutting the power might be the more sane way to go.

low harness
#

Though if the built-in method is to cut the power, you can probably assume the machine is fine with it.

left wharf
#

I'm not sure if I should trust the manufacturer on this. Anyway, the power metering is available. Might just do it keep it last longer.

#

The real issue, I suppose for all dehumidifiers, is that the humidity sensor is only taking local measurement. If there is little circulation in the room, the humidifier is sort of working in its own atmosphere. Drying air nearby and affected by the evaporation from the tank.

Miss out on the public holiday

clear ferry
#

We get paid for any holiday always, without working for regular full time workers

umbral cliff
#

You work Monday- Friday. Public holiday Saturday. You don’t get it

#

So this means you get the holiday on the next Monday

forest edge
#

you get xmas eve and xmas off

umbral cliff
#

Means you can have a long weekend too which is nice

forest edge
#

if xmas fell on like a sunday, you would get the following monday off

umbral cliff
#

Except we get Christmas & Boxing Day off

forest edge
#

your "boxing day" is weird

umbral cliff
#

Why?

forest edge
#

it's just weird to get an additional 2 days off after a holiday

umbral cliff
#

If Christmas & Boxing Day fell on Monday & Tuesday you don’t get the additional 2 days. It’s just those two

forest edge
#

we couldn't do that regardless cause as I said, we get more than enough holiday days off through the year as it is

umbral cliff
#

It’s because most people don’t work weekends, so they can have a holiday too

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

sure it hurts

#

thats less people working, the gears aren't turning lol

umbral cliff
#

If you’re salaried you still get paid. If you’re paid per hour then you either get time off or you get bonus pay (200 or 250% I think)

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

I enjoy my 25ish hour weeks

forest edge
#

if you live in a country that wouldn't even make a blip if you had disappeared that's easy to say

clear ferry
#

Still getting paid for 40 though

forest edge
#

we get roughly 10 or so holidays off in a year, some of those have additional days tied to them

#

that's plenty

umbral cliff
#

13-15 here or so. Depending on state and what day things fall on

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

medical do still work

umbral cliff
#

Yeah so they deserve extra pay on public holidays. Same with retail, hospitality, etc

#

Everything doesn’t shut down on a public holiday. It just gives people time off or gives them more money

forest edge
#

as i said we get plenty, there is no reason to give additional time off for silly reasons

umbral cliff
#

Silly reasons like giving people a holiday?

forest edge
#

you already had your holiday

clear ferry
#

We'll probably do 4 day work week for all at some point

forest edge
#

this isn't hobbitsville.. there isn't second breakfast

#

lol just a standard 4 days instead of 5 throughout the year?

umbral cliff
umbral cliff
forest edge
#

that sounds like a country going into debt lol

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

We have no debt to the US, the US however has quite a bit of debt to Norway

umbral cliff
#

Just like you can provide free medical care without making the country bankrupt

forest edge
#

every country has debt, which is why working less seems stupid

umbral cliff
#

Because you can also be putting money into the economy by going out and spending (like going out for dinner)

#

4 day work weeks also isn’t guaranteed to change your income

#

So tax man gets the same anyway

forest edge
#

that money they pay you on those days off has to be earned from somewhere

umbral cliff
#

Yeah the work you do for 4 days

forest edge
#

it's just common sense that if you work less, you make less.. everyone makes less

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

I work a lot less now than I did 5 years ago, I earn roughly double

forest edge
#

i'm talking about the general term of "working"

#

not what one individuial gets paid

umbral cliff
#

Casual workers may be paid less, but there’s no guarantee they even worked 5 day weeks anyway

forest edge
#

small countries can get away with doing some things differently but all them make compromises in some form or another

#

atx likes to brag about his financial situation but it costs him more to go out to eat then it does for me to shop for enough food to last a month

#

lol 150

#

like i said compermises

#

the wheel balances out one way or another

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

it's irrelevant

umbral cliff
#

Because you can eat on $60 a month or $500 a month

#

So it’s not irrelevant

forest edge
#

sure it is

#

we're not comparing Ethiopian conditions to paris here

umbral cliff
#

If you’re feeding a family of 5, 3 large meals a day then you’ll need to spend more food than 1 person eating 1.5 meals a day

#

$100 a month could cover plenty of veggies too for food

#

But if you want meat it’ll be more

forest edge
#

we barley break a 100 and that is ONLY if we spend it on junk food. if we were to just shop for home cooking it would be half that for far more

#

but again it's irrlevant.. his cost of living is way higher

#

to balance things out

umbral cliff
#

Does the $50 include meat then?

umbral cliff
forest edge

would include anything you want, aside from junk food

In its unadulterated form, the U.S. at-will rule leaves employees vulnerable to arbitrary and sudden dismissal, a limited or on-call work schedule depending on the employer’s needs, and unannounced cuts in pay and benefits.

#

Yeah that sounds great

forest edge
#

just like atx being lazy, people are lazy here too

umbral cliff
#

Though the other big issue is healthcare. You should be able to call an ambulance, go to hospital, have surgery, and pay next to nothing without insurance

#

That should be legislated too

forest edge
#

"The term at-will employment is a legal term meaning that an employer can terminate an employee for any reason without warning. However, an employer cannot fire an employee if the reason for doing so is illegal or discriminatory, such as firing someone because of their gender, race, or religion." as i said, context

#

Yet you don’t get any benefits

forest edge
#

curious how you became such an expert on the USA

#

it's almost getting to the point Tinkerer will need to step in lol

umbral cliff
#

Also if you don’t have income you’re not paying taxes and so healthcare is free

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

but it's inaccurate

#

all of it

#

nothing you have said yet is true

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

anything can be made out bad or good soley dependent on context. without knowing the bigger picture you can't possibly judge something fairly. Hell I hate our healthcare system but i'm not so naive to be blinded by the facts

#

just because we have some trade off's in areas that differ from your own dosen't make one worse than the other.. our healthcare system is actually pretty advanced considering.. thus why we pay more

#

you say we don't get the benefits but we do

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

we have one healthcare

#

we don't have cheap lol

umbral cliff
#

Anyway imma head out. We’re going around in circles

umbral cliff
#

Or go private if you wanna spend money

jade tartan
#

im trying to get that OT

umbral cliff
jade tartan
#

today was 1st day

#

from what i gather we do the access control, cameras, and other random IOT things

#

#

forest edge
#

wtf is cheap insurance in au? a witchdoctor?

jade tartan
#

umbral cliff

#

#

#

the zf8 is a very good automatic

#

the other option is to fix my current old bmw but i kinda want something new

I didn't know the population of au was only 25 mil

umbral cliff
#

We’re tiny

jade tartan
#

is your want of a new vehicle controversal?

umbral cliff
#

One of the lowest population densities in the world

jade tartan
#

lol

scenic radish
#

I'd kind of like a different car, but it's almost a game at this point to get my money's worth out of my current one that I've had for 6+ years

forest edge
#

and thus why you can do certian changes

jade tartan
#

lolololol

#

i mean

#

now is the time

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

but you actually pay a whole lot more for cost of living then we do on average

scenic radish
#

Also, I used to like cars more but now I kind of just see it as an appliance

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

car as an appliance?

forest edge
umbral cliff
#

Given we grow a lot of stuff locally

forest edge
#

certian things may scale but if you include the whole picture it does not scale

umbral cliff
#

She’s my daily driver

jade tartan

umbral cliff
#

Pretty efficient though, did a 700km road trip the other day, 3/4 a tank or so each way. 7.7L/100km for a 21 year old car isn’t bad

jade tartan
#

no not bad

#

my new commute is 34 miles 1 way

scenic radish
#

How many eagles per inch is that

jade tartan
#

half being highway

umbral cliff
#

Including city traffic each end

scenic radish
#

Pretty good, yeah

jade tartan
#

if i have to go more frugal with car, ive been looking at a like 2013 ish ford escape titanium

forest edge
#

eletric cars do those ranges now

umbral cliff
