plus our government ignored this fact and politicians did not care for the last months because of elections.
thus leading to austria being the number 1 in daily infections, more than 15.000 per day. the lockdown is the politicians way of saying 'yes we f*ed up' without actually saying it.

I don't rate wsl

#

Turns your computer into a potato full time

#

Just go bare metal Linux and be done with it

low harness
#

Well. Good news!

subtle pasture
#

Hmm, haven't had any issues with WSL. And WSL v2 just straight-up runs Linux directly on a Type-1 hypervisor, so performance shouldn't be any worse than running Linux on KVM.

low harness
#

My only complaints with wsl2 is really the performance on cross system file operations (/mnt/c is ridiculously slow) and the complete lack of any form of usb passthrough.

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, WSL v1 is faster there, because it's running directly on the host filesystem, rather than accessing the host filesystem through a Hyper-V API

#

You might be able to make USB passthrough work if you fire up the Hyper-V console and fiddle with the WSL VM

low harness
#

I looked into that at some point. Then I pulled a raspberry from the pi-le and did whatever it was I needed on that instead.

subtle pasture
#

That also works. lol

low harness
#

Likely saved me two days of work when I just needed to flash an esp.

subtle pasture
#

I always have VMWare Workstation installed, so firing up a full blown Linux VM isn't exactly hard 🤷‍♀️

low harness
#

I heard that didn't work with wsl2 installed, but I never tried...

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, it requires that Windows not be running inside of Hyper-V

#

If you enable Hyper-V, even the original host OS becomes a VM

low harness
#

Which is pretty cool in concept.

subtle pasture
#

I mean, that's how it has to work to be a Type-1 hypervisor

low harness
#

Yeah. And that would be neat if it wasn't for Windows so obviously being more equal than others.

#

But then again... the main point is to run windows

subtle pasture
#

Eh, Hyper-V runs Linux just fine. Microsoft has contributed a lot of code to Linux specifically to improve compatibility with Hyper-V

#

And a large chunk of Windows Azure is Linux VMs running on Hyper-V

#

It'll now run nested inside Hyper-V, with a few limitations

#

Probably a good idea, since Windows 11 runs on top of Hyper-V by default

#

And Windows 10 runs on top of Hyper-V if you enable Virtualization Based Security (VBS).

#

I strongly suspect this is part of the reason Microsoft limited Windows 11 support to 7th/8th gen, or newer, processors. Older CPUs take a noticeable performance hit with VBS enabled.

#

VMWare even notes the performance impact of VBS in their documentation for ESXi. They recommend Skylake (or higher) to avoid a performance hit with VBS enabled.

They ran a combination of Cisco and Skype for Business, with an Asterisk server as the glue in between.

#

The idea was to eventually get rid of the Cisco system, but I dunno if that ever happened. lol

#

70% of the phones had been replace by Polycom desk phones with Lync/SFB integration by the time I changed jobs

clear ferry
#

Voip was a big deal in the mid to late 00s, but I don't think I've seen a new deployment since 2009

#

Remember rolling it out in municipal center in 2006

subtle pasture
#

Eh, it still happens, but it's usually using a cloud PBX

clear ferry
#

Yeah, I hardly see desk phones anymore outside of dark sites

subtle pasture
#

You set up a few DNS records and DHCP options in your internal DNS, and all the desk phones reach out to the cloud hosted PBX automatically

clever mortar
#

We had VOIP at work until about 2 years ago, when they basically ripped almost all of them out since everybody had a mobile...

subtle pasture
#

Might want to check your local laws on that. Making sure your building is compliant for 911 service comes up a lot.

clear ferry
#

Yeah, most of my customers got rid of VoIP close to a decade ago, we are pretty weird for using internet dialing on teams

clever mortar
subtle pasture
#

Is it that weird? We have landline service through Teams

#

It's just one extra service in the M365 Admin Center

clear ferry
#

We do too, but we are also the only ones I know that do of any customers i know

#

But we are murica company

#

So it is normal to lag 10 years behind

subtle pasture
#

And, really, it's just a Microsoft Lync server in the cloud, on the backend...

fleet quiver
subtle pasture
#

They need to stop rebranding that product already...

fleet quiver
#

no kidding

subtle pasture
#

Its been Microsoft Office Communications Server, Lync Server, Skype for Business Server, and now Teams Server.

#

Though I don't think they even offer an on-prem version anymore

clear ferry
#

We are still in island mode, so teams is basically useless for us

fleet quiver
clear ferry
#

So I just use slack

fleet quiver
#

I mean its better to have Teams than Flowdock, that's for sure

subtle pasture
#

Nope, they still have an on-prem version: Skype For Business Server 2019

#

So you can run an entirely on-prem Teams infrastructure with PBX / PoTS support, if you like

dusky plank
#

indian call centers would like to know your expertise

subtle pasture
#

heh, I bet. It's pretty simple to set up a PowerShell script to have your Skype for Business server automatically rotate through different blocks of outbound VOIP numbers

clear ferry
#

I don't think I've seen a private landline since 2003 come think of it, most people got migrated to VoIP for landline but even my parents got rid of that in 2008ish

subtle pasture
#

Just throw a few SIP providers at it and you can coldcall till the end of time

#

@clear ferry It's not uncommon to migrate to VOIP, and still have a few copper landlines (or a PRI) as a fallback

#

It was even more common when VOIP couldn't handle data/fax lines properly

#

"Oh, you want to set up a card swipe machine to accept credit/debit? Sorry, you'll need to keep your PRI around"

clear ferry
#

Don't know if you saw my post a few weeks ago @subtle pasture Norway is discontinuing copper landline this month, they stopped servicing them in 2017, and stopped selling them in 2009, they will start ripping them down off poles and out of the ground in February next year

subtle pasture
#

We implemented MFA at our office, and to avoid paying a phone stipend for the use of the authenticator app, they made YubiKeys an option ($40 expense per-employee who wants one)

#

Because an alternative that doesn't use a personal device is available, apparently that loopholes them out of paying a stipend

fleet quiver
#

at ours they didn't do either 🙂

subtle pasture
#

No MFA?

fleet quiver
#

yes MFA, no stipend or YubiKey

subtle pasture
#

That'd be illegal in California, heh

clear ferry
#

What is this, I haven't paid for a mobile phone service or phone in 15 years, and I just put two yubikeys on the company card 💩

fleet quiver
#

oh I'm sure that they have some way around it, they're a fortune 500 co

subtle pasture
#

They'd either have to pay you small stiped for requiring the use of a company app on a personal device, or provide a company-owned device.

clear ferry
#

The dystopian dream still lives 🥳

fleet quiver

I mean they also provide voice or call auth, does that exempt them?

subtle pasture
fleet quiver

Tempted to remove my voice number from the MFA stuff

subtle pasture
#

If my job requires me to have a piece of dedicated hardware to perform job functions, you bet they should pay for that hardware

fleet quiver
#

good point

subtle pasture
#

Personally, I took the YubiKey option. They paid for it, and now I basically don't need the company MFA app on my phone.

#

I also don't have company email signed in on my phone, because their Exchange server policies would allow remote-wipe. "Nope, not happening. You want me to have email on my phone, you give me a company phone"

fleet quiver
#

I think its funny that I can use the work MFA app on my rooted phone, but Teams is a no go

fleet quiver
#

App called Shelter sets up a Work profile with no need for all the admin bs

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, I actually do have Nine on my phone (a paid Exchange mailbox client for Android) which can do fun things like ignore Exchange server requirements, while telling the server everything is good to go

#

Rooted? No PIN code set? No problem, it'll tell the Exchange server all policies are good. lol

#

Remote wipe? Ignored 😄

clear ferry
#

Yes, I use nine too

#

Great product

subtle pasture
#

Expensive, but worth every penny

#

I think it was like $15

#

But it's the best Exchange client for Android, bar none.

#

I plunked down for it when I got tired of Android's built-in Exchange support fucking up, not syncing, missing calendar events, being inflexible, etc.

#

Also works for any hotmail/live/outlook.com inbox, and is better than the Google or Microsoft clients for either.

#

The poor Exchange support baked into Android almost feels intentional, at this point...

umbral cliff

New place I’m moving into from my parents has fibre to the home. But too expensive and unneeded to get anything more than 100/40

hoary canyon
#

I think we pay like $70/mo for gig fiber. 940 upload and download

umbral cliff

hoary canyon
#

Nice

umbral cliff
hoary canyon
#

I was paying like $50/mo a couple of years ago for 25/5

umbral cliff
#

Yeah none of our internet speed tiers offer symmetrical speed, which I guess for the average user anything more than 20-40 up isn’t needed

hoary canyon
#

This is kind of tempting.. the TVs are a couple of years old but we’re priced insanely high making me think they are still a good deal

umbral cliff

Just I have plex that I wanna run 😂

umbral cliff
#

Wifi at parents home (ISP gave us 6 months free of 250/20 which is fun to try out)

hoary canyon
#

There’s 5 types of internet here in the US

#

DSL, Fiber, DOCSIS (cable), Satellite, & Cellular

#

Usually fiber being the fastest followed by docsis, cellular, dsl and satellite

umbral cliff
#

Like if it wasn’t so expensive then the low speed tiers would be sensible. To enable people to buy what they wanted

umbral cliff
# hoary canyon DSL, Fiber, DOCSIS (cable), Satellite, & Cellular

Here we have like 6 types all under the mess that is the NBN.
Fibre to the node (copper running 200-300 max from node - usually can’t get 100mbps down and most can’t get above 50)
Fibre to the curb (same as fttn except shorter runs - still capped at 100)
Fibre to the home (fibre straight into your home)
Hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) (docsis that runs into fibre earlier than it normally would - usually can get either 250 or 1000 plans)
Fixed wireless (microwave link - capped at 50mbps)
Satellite (stupid expensive and very low caps - like <200gb)
ADSL (not through NBN I don’t think but it’s old and slow but some people still need it in rural areas - rest of the country it’s been switched off)

#

And excluding satellite and fixed wireless (because it’s not economical to run a 2km fibre cable to one house) the original plan of fibre instead of the mixed technology network is now looking cheaper than all of those

hoary canyon
#

Interesting, DOCSIS runs off of fiber but a cable line is buried to the home no fiber.

#

DSL uses the phone lines here

umbral cliff
#

Fibre to the node/ curb/ adsl all use the copper phone lines

hoary canyon
#

I think Canada uses that hybrid stuff

umbral cliff
#

They just have capped runs at different lengths of course

hoary canyon
#

The most common type of internet here if I were to guess is DOCSIS

umbral cliff
#

We don’t actually know how much the NBN has costed us, just that it’s a lot of money 🙃

hoary canyon
#

lol

#

You can get up to 1400mbps download and 50 up on Comcast which uses DOCSIS

#

DOCSIS 3.1 in specific

umbral cliff
#

Stuff the liberal government for just wanting to be different (which in australia is right wing and also has a blue colour because we’re opposite to the USA lol)

#

Since labor’s plan was fibre to home. Then they just wanted to come out with something different

#

The classic political move

hoary canyon
#

Yeah.. sucks

umbral cliff
#

Which for infrastructure is frustrating

#

Since it’s more than a 3 year term at that point….

#

Anyway let’s avoid politics but yeah I don’t get why they do that stuff 😂

umbral cliff
#

So doesn’t get the same issue as the phone cables which were underground in pits that flood

hoary canyon
umbral cliff
#

hoary canyon
#

I find UK broadband odd too

#

Which makes no sense to me

IIRC we specifically said NOT to ping mod for spam before.

clear ferry

I feel like there is a lot of spam here right now

#

should I ping mods

Technically that's still true to the name

glacial knot

I almost made the mistake to copy it over to laugh at it. And copy the (at)Mod with it 😂

cyan yoke
#

hi it says in the rules to post here if I get spam of any kind, should I ping the mods

clever mortar
#

Yeah, I get the feeling the skim-read ... I don't think they'll make that mistake again

||at least not until later today||

OK late to the party, what's burning

Hmm @clever mortar I'm just confirming my account

this free tier oracle vm is really great

using it to transfer files to and from customers via sftp

I just noticed recently that they downgraded to 2 cores from 4 for me 😄

Guys what’s best having all bulb RGBW (ceiling light I mean also) or RGB just near the TV?

glacial knot
#

I'd get more of highlights/indirect colour but never use the ceiling lights outside warm/cold white settings

clear ferry
#

Loving pdsh pdsh -w serverfarm4-[2-12] /tmp/XL450/firmware-ilo5-2.55-1.1.x86_64/setup -s

#

Because I’m going to buy new E27 bulb for light my rooms and I’m thinking to get just dimmable white bulb or RGBW for using it with HUE app

clever mortar
#

I'd personally do CCT (cold to warm white) in the main fittings and RGB in the other locations

#

If you're doing all in one you want RGB-CCT

clear ferry
#

CT only master race 🤌

So like, is there a way to make ha app stay in backround open? Like i have the habbit of slide closing all my appz, but then ha sensors dont update, way around that?

jade tartan

Oh hush u

clever mortar
#

Pretty much every time you post in this channel you're told it's not for support

jade tartan
#

Direct me to the chan

#

Lol

clever mortar
#

There are channels for the HA app

jade tartan
#

Not like i know which goes where for something obscure

clever mortar
#

🤨

#

If only that were the case... you default to posting here just about every damn time

#

I'm also not sure I'd call the apps - which have their own section - "obscure"

jade tartan
#

My response: meh

clever mortar
#

Yeah, you gain nothing by trying to manage memory better than the OS

subtle pasture
#

Never really had any issues with the Android app updating in the background, tbh

#

And that's surprising, because the HA app doesn't spawn a silent notification to keep itself running.

#

I kinda expected it to live in the Silent Notifications area forever, like Tasker and LastPass do 🤷‍♀️

That moment when you score an item worth 500 euro for 50 LOL.

#

Never been this lucky.

#

I would've returned it if they'd asked me the same week. But not after 2 months.

fathom sparrow
#

They probably had to send that out to make the insurance company happy, and anyone that falls for it is a schmuck

crisp sapphire
#

Thats not all. The company's also known for they're scammy prices

#

But damn... fat deal.

#

Very happy

fathom sparrow
#

Son of a bitch, thats a nice catch

#

Although, the markup on that must be huge

#

so, probably no loss to them anyways

crisp sapphire

Was gonna order a few and price gouge on ebay, but didnt have the cash to order more so just ended listing the one i had on ebay. Figured id either immediately order a new one off amazon once the ebay listing sold, or just cancel the ebay order if the amazon deal went kaputt.

#

they removed the amazon listing before the ebay one sold so i bailed.

crisp sapphire
#

so id say maybe 10 - 20% margin?

fathom sparrow
#

Yah but the original manufacturer has markup, and I bet it's around 300 euro

#

no way those sensors & engineering time cost that much on that device

#

unless they are buying the best sensors on the market

crisp sapphire
#

Yea no they dont cost that much. The gammascout's one of the most (if not the most) shitty and overpriced pile of trash geiger counter out there.

The only reason i bought it is bcuz it sorta has a special place in my heart due to it being my first ever counter back in 2013 (that one broke ages ago).

#

was gonna buy one sometime. But when i saw that deal...
