yeaahhh.... they are cheap though

I have never heard of them so I googled

where are you hosting?

All over. OVH, reliablesite, vultr, aws, hostvenom

I know hetzner is the big German one but I can't remember if I have ever used them

@scenic radish you shouldn't make fun of stroke victims.. thats rude!

Yeah, hard to judge server reviews. A lot of it is because they expect support

last dirge
#

I'm bored

#

might ESP my fireplace

#

it uses a contact closure that's wired up to a regular toggle switch

wet pilot
#

that's been on my list for a while. thing has a thermocouple and operates on milivoltage though

last dirge
#

route those wires to the ESP, have the switch control the ESP

#

ESP controls a relay

#

boom

#

well, not boom

wet pilot
#

hopefully not boom

last dirge
#

but Bob's your auntie

wet pilot
#

also should probably use a temp sensor in the room for a safety

last dirge
#

"the room" is my entire downstairs

#

will probably just do an automation

wet pilot
#

also if you have controlled fans you'll want them to kick on to circulate

last dirge
#

there's a fan module for the insert that the builder didn't install

#

it's controlled by the little controller for the fireplace

wet pilot
#

was talking in the room itself

last dirge
#

I've been thinking about getting that and installing it

#

we never run the fan in the winter but that's not a bad idea at all

#

it's already got a smart switch, just need to flip the reverser

wet pilot
#

yup

last dirge
#

I'd just have to figure out how to have it deal with the physical switch

#

if it was turned on from hass, I'd still want to be able to turn it off via the switch

#

and vice versa

wet pilot
#

tie the physical switch into the relay

last dirge
#

I guess I could make it toggle

wet pilot
#

or into the esp at least

last dirge
#

I'd need a different type o' relay then

wet pilot
#

just have it feed 5v and read for 5v

last dirge
#

right but if the switch on the wall is off

#

and I want to turn it on with the ESP

#

I have to ignore the switch

wet pilot
#

yep

last dirge
#

so I have to code all that in

wet pilot
#

so you need the milivoltage in from the fireplace and switch it back to the fireplace. need 5v out to the switch and a pin back from the switch to see if its enabled

last dirge
#

yeah

#

but it'll have to have the knowledge that the physical switch needs to flip from opposite logic to matching logic

#

back to opposite

#

for it to change the state of the relay

#

meaning if the switch on the wall is off but the fireplace is on it'll have to go to on, then to off

#

and vice versa

wet pilot
#

no, just have switch -> off always win

#

if the switch turns of always turn off the fireplace

last dirge
#

then I can't turn it on from the ESP/hass if the wall switch is off

#

totally defeating the point of automating it

wet pilot
#

if the switch turns on, turn on the fireplace if it isn't already on. otherwise, do nothing

#

only eval the state of the switch when the switch changes state

#

add a attribute to ha for switch_position

last dirge
#

then the logic of how the thing works is split between the thing actually controlling it and hass

wet pilot
#

you can do it fully on devcie

last dirge
#

I will

wet pilot
#

but might as well expose everything out as well

#

physical switch just acts as an override

last dirge
#

have to go spend a few hundred bucks on a new office chair today though

wet pilot
#

to on: turn on fireplace if it isn't already on.
to off: turn off fireplace if it isn't already off.

last dirge
#

but it'll have to see the state change from low/high/low

#

or vice versa

wet pilot
#

no, you only need to handle low/high and high/low

It's like BMI. Someone can be healthy with a high BMI because it's an oversimplified calculation based on height and weight.

A rugby prop could be muscly as hell and really short... their BMI would seem high but they're still healthier than me.

There's all kinds of calculations used in fitness/medicine that should only ever be used as a guide.

clever mortar

Have setup my HA on a Pi 4 and and currently setting up a linux platform router and AP for the whole system. Along with automatics gates it. The system will fully control the solar and water systems. The goal is to reach 100% self sufficient home

Hello everyone. I got a question on something I havenโ€™t been able to wrap my head around. I see people with various speakers on their HA and they play from a source to those. How does that work? Like how does the โ€œroutingโ€ on the audio happen?

last plaza
#

It uses something called network.

forest edge
#

if the source can accept external commands such as over a network as skalavala pointed out then HA can play middle man

#

@last plaza requesting a bot command .poo that in turn outputs poos on atx

last plaza
shrewd oasis
#

Ok so itโ€™s source (controlled by HA?) -> HA middleman -> speaker endpoint.

forest edge
#

think of HA more like the tv remote in your hand

shrewd oasis
#

How can I create sources? Like what can be a source. I see people use radio stations but I have unraid with lots of music on it. Can that be a source?

#

Maybe plex?

forest edge
#

i dunno, someone who actually uses that stuff would know. sure there are guides on it online

shrewd oasis
#

I have looked but havenโ€™t found many simpler guides. I will keep looking.

forest edge
#

try looking through the HA integrations. like i think there is a spotify one so it may give you a clue

shrewd oasis
#

Ok thanks

We haven't even been to the cinemas since Avengers endgame came out

#

And it's nothing to do with covid

#

Also I remember how His Dark Materials was released in UK a week before the US

#

And all the americans were like "Why do we have to wait a whole week while the UK gets it sooner"

#

That must be rough

shell pecan
#

i think every HA enthusiast should learn how to use an Arduino

#

imo the easiest way to get started is an emulator

#

(Arduino + breadboard simulator)

#

if you know electronics you can literally make smart devices for under $1

forest edge
#

maybe those who can use aliexpress

shell pecan
#

yea

forest edge
#

but even then under a buck? come on

shell pecan
#

wifi chip is like 30 cents

#

i mean it depends on what you're making

#

but really all you need to do is interrupt a circuit in most cases

forest edge
#

aliexpress and free shipping.. must be nice

shell pecan
#

i mean mee n even if it costs 5 bucks

#

these stores are selling things for way more than that

forest edge
#

for me it's cheaper to buy something like a shelly 1 than to buy the parts and shipping to make something like it

shell pecan
#

shelly is cool

#

but like

#

knowing how to use boards and stuff

#

i got a garage door opener wifi module for $3

For those in the west: do you guys get hit with import duties on Ali shipments? Is there like a minimum amount above which that happens? Just curious.

A few years ago I was in the โ€œI will only buy certified HomeKit compatible gearโ€ mindset. Now I laugh at the prices of stuff sold in some stores and regularly stand there going โ€œI can build that for pennies on the dollarโ€

Ah. Not sure what Ali is doing with shipping now but I think they must be flying packages over in bulk or something because they all have Australia post labels on them. Shipping is normally free or a few dollars.

forest edge
thorny crescent
#

Those shipping times happen here sometimes too. Generally around a month then all these wonderful surprises turn up.

low harness

Waiting for my new PC parts. First new build in 15 years. You bet the first thing I get running will be Morrowind!

molten osprey
#

Ali shipping times are pretty bad for me too. Used to be that things arrived no later than a month from order, but since the pandemic about half the orders take 2 months to arrive.

deft pewter
#

I ordered a few things around the New Year. They came in under 14 days.

#

I know atx orders a lot and has said the same. Very quick lately.

molten osprey
#

There is a regional player here in Southeast Asia (Lazada) which is owned by Alibaba. A lot of the stuff sold on there comes from the same vendors as those on Ali, but arrives within a few weeks. The prices are a bit higher and often come from warehouses in Singapore or Thailand.

molten osprey
deft pewter
#

Maybe it depends if your stuff still ships by... ship. That's always been slow and ports are slower than usual.

#

I think mine were all airmail (small packages) so were very quick.

#

Anything that goes in a shipping container has to make about 20 stops around the world before reaching Europe.

molten osprey
#

Yeah that would make a difference for sure. And Iโ€™m sure pc parts will be more expensive than my average order too ๐Ÿ™‚

#

So far though, never got hit with import duties. Iโ€™m not sure if thatโ€™s because we have a trade agreement with China (I donโ€™t know if we do), because most items are below the tax threshold or because Thai customs are lazy.

#

What Iโ€™ve learned is to never have anything shipped by FedEx, UPS or DHL. Because 100% of those deliveries get hit with horrendous fees and duties.

hushed basalt
#

So it's just standard "postal mail"

thorny crescent
hushed basalt
#

It's definitely a rip for us

thorny crescent
#

Totally. Iโ€™m just glad domestic mail in Victoria has returned to normal since the lock down. It took me 2 weeks to get a package from 1 hours drive away

hushed basalt
#

It makes no sense that a business in china can send something to someone in Aus* considerably cheaper than someone in Australia

#

Using the same postal service

#

Like how could a local business compete with that for low cost goods

thorny crescent
#

Yeah theyโ€™ve got no chance. A podcast did a story about a New York business getting shafted by the costs

hushed basalt
#

Then places like Amazon exploited and then lobbied tax laws in the beginning

#

So say if state tax is 9%, amazon classify themselves as out of state since they're online or whatever's

#

So they can charge 8% less than the competitor, and still make 1% more gross revenue

deft pewter
#

Gross indeed.

Nah. Well used, with old solder all over the place.

That's disgusting.

Curry ketchup

we had 35ยฐC in summer two years ago... it was hell...

deft pewter

Yeah, I don't like it over 30.

scenic radish

Ha, by me it regularly gets above 30C during the summer and well below 0C in the winter

tame sand

then we went to spain and had 49ยฐC in the same summer so our holidays were basically inside of the hotel

clever mortar
#

Hot and low humidity is fine, but that never happens in the UK

tame sand
#

We normally have around -12 to 0ยฐC in winter but this year its really warm... but we still have snow ....

scenic radish
#

Yeah summers are hot and humid, spring warm and humid, fall cool and dry, winter cold and dry

deft pewter
#

UK seasons are easy to remember. Spring is wet and miserable. Summers are wet and miserable. Autumn is wet and miserable. Winter is wet and miserable.

#

The 3 warm, dry days we get each year are the exception.

scenic radish
#

Is it seriously always humid lol

#

If so that sucks, if the dew point is 60F or higher I probably find it too humid

I wouldn't say it's always humid. It's just always wet.
