Fish tank integration lol
You should 3d print an enclosure
Big time. Coming soon.
My old simple metal recently stopped working. Gonna have to replace it
Yeah, Dht22 for the area. Ds18bidk in the water.
nice. dht are trash though
Old arduino leftovers. Honestly have no need for it lol. Just no other temp sensors in living room so figured why not
Any recommendations ? I’ve recently switched motion from 501s to am312s
fo sho. I used mine similarly and then bought lots of bme280s
Niiiice thank you. Seen and read about them
yup. esphome makes it all quick too
I2c
Ok cool go to know. Lol
I gotta get going with the oled displays
Got a few and tried with arduino. While it worked i didn’t have much left for anything else.
I bought some more that I have never used yet
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0761LV1SD/ I have these in a box somewhere next to me
small as fuck
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072Q2X2LL/ this is normally what I get. top pixels are yellow, bot are blue
they have them single color too though
asb, if you are looking into adding temp/humidity to all of your rooms
the new hip thing to do is these screen/sensor things
so you need an esp32 or something that can forward BLE for all of your rooms
if only they were zigbee.
cheap as hell for a screen though
cold country dollars or real dollars?
Murica dollars
dollariedoos
I love how phnx pops in to say a funny word
its that time of night
every time I try to focus on HA lately, my girl brings in a cooler of drinks and I get drunk and chat on discord
sorry y'all
One of the few mods that haven't blocked me you say
lol
I am pretty tame though

i don't think i've really blocked anyone
people leave me alone for some reason
knocks on wood
I have a hard time actually getting upset from people
zigbee is the same freq as ble so why not?
eh, i don't tend to get upset. usually a "you're obnoxious" response
I have 12 on the way for $49.57
ahh, the "blocked message" thing annoys me more than people
I've blocked a single person in two years
Usually all of the discord I am in, people recognize me and harass me so I have escaped here successfully mostly.
i think i'm at like 2 in 5
not that I am famous or anything, I just get around
ohhh, those screens
I was talking about the BLE temp/hum sensors
Oh
man, I want to spend $100 on aliexpress with arduino parts and be loaded in parts
You mean like my garage?
anyway, time for me to pass out. gnight from America/New_York
Good night from America/Chicago
New-America/York
-6, repRESENT
lol
The screens ? No I got two
is your name a pronounceable word or just a bunch of asdfazxddffdf
only 2 and not flashed 'em all?
okay, so not a word
The first four years online my nick was haCker or something
https://share.busheezy.dev/7TTEdW.png I sent them to my old address. I have to snag them if they actually leave them
one of my early nicknames was sweettooth
also, Terminal
terrible google uniqueness
atxbyea is a banger for google hits
I haven't googled it, but I assume
I'm going to attach a few ws2812bs directly to a 8266 and make it like a notification light or something.
discord blinky blink
I guess I will use my bar light strip instead of the ceiling for a night light now
atx, did you see my bar
Scroll up
I've seen worse
You can't see it unless you are on the floor so works for me. It isn't permanent either. Nice asb
You should try a setup with each side as a segment
Idk if you can do that with config only or not
I’ve been considering ripping each wall into segments actually!!! And sorry I keep getting distracted
I grabbed this FEIT cheap WiFi bulb at Menards today
Turns out super easy to add to HA with tuya app
@clear ferry are there zigbee versions of those temp/ humidity sensors?
I'm going to give up on my $2 433MHz flood detectors
Doesnt Xiaomi have some cheap ones?
I am thinking 1 in each room. Flood detection would be very useful, might go the door entry/alarm system route for that though
I've actually had a water pipe burst TWICE in my previous apartment. So I consider it a genuine danger 🙂
The cheap detectors I have now seem unreliable.
I have the aqara (xiaomi) water leak detectors. I haven't tested them with water, but I did use a pair of scissors to short them and they worked as expected (using deconz + conbee ii)
Nice.
i have one under my water heater tank. am going to put other ones at different corners of the house where water might leak in from outside.
For me it's under every sink.
ooh... good call... might have to order a few more from ali
Got a link from where you ordered yours on ali?
Smarter Shopping, Better Living! Aliexpress.com
Oh I use rhum for that
relative humidity seems the most appropriate thing to measure
that is why you need the fan, after all ... to reduce the humidity
Makes sense in some countries
We don't have bathroom fans in Norway
Or, I've seen it... Twice in my life
in NL we do, here in TH too
We don't even have bathrooms in Sweden
haha
I started watching a Norwegian show on Netflix last night
first time, I think
Which one?
it's about russians 'peacefully invading' your country or something? hang on.
"Occupied" is the title on Netflix
There is quite a lot of them.
"Okkupert" IMDb 7.7
Really, I've only seen it in two houses, and I usually take a shit in every house I visit
"kom fram ubåts jävel"
I see it, but I've never seen it
7.7 is not too bad
Don't bring Peter Madsen into this
3.6 is not great, not terrible though
what is 3.6?
Chernobyl
I think there are two about CHernobyl
The meter that maxed at 3.6 (roentgens per hour????) measured 3.6
It is 200IQ

If you make the meter only go to like 25 volts, everything is max 25 volts
yeah yeah
Who needs high voltage, my entire house is 25v!
hehe
Apparently it was closer to 15000, not 3.6 at the actual core, so meter was a bit off
Reminds me.... I need to get my esp+pir sensors running
433 ftw
🤢
hehe
i'm in the process of sorting out my wifi ... until that is proper done, 433 is the one technology where i dont need to worry "if the signal will make it to the base" ... it will 🙂
waiting for someone from europe to come visit thailand, and carry a unifi wifi 6 access point over
I mean, everything has it use. Even 433. Even if that is only polluting the air with waves 😂
Oh we've got a lot of pollution of the air here anyway!
AQI 192 this morning
dont think i can send photos on here, can i?
There are lots of standards, and so many different things using different standards. Not knocking 433 but a lot of old tech needs to die
Yes, share pics (sfw!)
Thicc
and the worst thing is .... this is the time of year where temperatures are actually nice in this country
but i cant enjoy it because ... i'm not going out in that!
it is ... and entirely preventible
We hear all the time here how air is better because of corona, but yours looked terrible
this is not a year-round thing
this is the result of farmers burning their fields all over the mehkong delta
(the cheapest way to get it ready for the next seeding round)
Oh, very environmentally friendly
yeah
you'd think the government would do something about this. but then, they need the donations from the big agricultural companies. and those guys dont want to pay farmers enough so they can do this annual turnaround 'properly'.
money. as usual.
ZigBee 4 lyfe
What do you use as a receiver?
Or ... "controller" is what I think the official term is.
Found it for $12 on a local site (owned by Ali). I know. I'm a cheap bastard.
I have the $5 Sonoff stick
it is
ZZH 4lyfe 😛

whats a ZZH?
haha
iot stuff and other cool hacks
If you're in the EU then Slaesh is worth a look at, but be aware that many people complain about his customer service (or lack of)
He often goes radio silent for extended periods
I experienced this myself, and thankfully I already had a ZZH so didn't mind waiting a couple of months for a stick to appear in the post
searching ali for CC2652 doesnt yield much
They're complaining on the Z2M Discord about him doing this again
nothing that resembles that picture anyway
Looks like something I'll have to add to my EU shopping list.
So far, I have one Zigbee device. A light sensor. It's ok, I guess.
The Xiaomi Mijia one rocks 😉
wait what
It's almost as good as my much more expensive Z-Wave ones, but at a fraction of the price
The only way to get better is to get a Aeotec Multi-sensor 6, and run it on USB power
I expected the low light measurements to be more granular to be honest
but i guess "less than 1 lux is zero lux"
Low light measurement sucks for all sensors
Dark or light? :P
yeah true
When you mentioned the Xiaomi Mijia one, I thought Xiaomi had a CC2652-based controller you recommend
because that i could probably get locally
I would like an outside light sensor, triggering outside lighting with time switches is painful
damnit .... i have someone coming from London to Bangkok carrying a bunch of stuff. if only we had this conversation a few days ago!
Lux value would be a nice start, then use blue iris and aitool to determine if a person is there, and increase brightness of lights (thinking standard e27 lights that are dimmable)
nice
i was going to put mine out on the balcony
and turn lights on inside based on light values
but ... signal wont reach 🙂
Also thinking of number plate recognition for my car/ cars to trigger a welcome home automation
(which is probably because of the shitty controller stick!? )
Perhaps yes
plate recognition! NICE!
Zigbee might work better there because it can/does mesh
May also do a disarm from alarm system to trigger welcome home
Just use mobile presence detection
Yeah, mesh isn't so useful with 1 device 😂
i once had a conversation with an ISP sales person who said I would get a free "mesh router" with my plan. and tried to sell me this as a great thing. I asked to explain how a single mesh router would make ANY difference. they said "it just would".
I use person state triggers then attach trackers to persons
It won't
So you can use ble, wifi, app geolocation together
I know it wont!
a mesh of one is like a party of one!
My alarm will be seperate though, keypad on door and garage.keypad between garage/house (4 total)
I just have a virtual alarm in HA
But usually mesh routers are more powerful and have more transmission power
Like the Google WiFi one
@molten osprey I was born 87, yes :)
The router covers more then the satellites
@clear ferry I'm getting a UniFi access point for the wifi
Those
🤢 🤢 🤢 🤢
@last cedar That explains that then 🙂
The top is a coloured lcd, they look nice
I always forget which of the Scandinavian languages is half-understandable for me. It's not Norwegian. I concluded last night.
Might be Swedish.
Going to Amsterdam was such a culture shock for me
Oh, which is understandable for you
haha, how is that
Paris was okay,
Most people I meet say my Norwegian accent is easier to understand then most other Scandinavian ones
Those northerners just have a completely different language structure
@clear ferry you mean you speaking english with a norwegian accent?
@hushed basalt whats your reference? 🙂
No, my specific norwegian dialect
Australian
I have a weird accent, some say I have a slight Gotlands accent. Despite living my first 22 years in England 🦝
right
We have... A couple of hundred dialects
Really
I just felt like the linguistics was completely different
And we don't do like the Belgians who speak dialect at home and general at work
I think English and Dutch have more in common than English and French
In theory yes, but that wasn't my experience
We don't like Belgians. Full stop.
They've just diverged so much. Like atxbyea and his healthy screen time new years resolution
haha

I should balance this out by saying my stick arrived reasonably quickly, considering I ordered during the public holiday season, and it came with a small packet of gummi bears and a smiley in pen on the receipt.

Bought the Argon One case for my Pi. Previously had a 3d printed one with a fan and heatsinks on and it ran about 40c with the fan always on
Now it's running at 25c with no fan 😂
Pi 🤢
What's wrong with a Pi
Small, cheap and powerful enough to run HA quickly with io expansion
They are great kids toys, but too fickle for most things
🤨
Poor options for storage, fickle power subsystem, and no scalability over time
Sounds like wrong hardware for the job tbh
I wouldn't run a media server from them, but for 3d printing, running HA etc they're perfect
I run a pi, but I don't trust the bastard, only running zigbee2mqtt so easy to move though
I work on systems that stay up for 10 years with full load, so I have different standards
Haha well yeah, I wouldn't trust them for that. Like I said, wrong tool for the job
Why don't you have Z2M on a dedicated HPE node? 🤔
Because I'm looking for a EL1000 to run it
Maybe I'll find one soon
An EL300 might suffice too
Vehicle ignition switch integrated in the power supply. This enables automotive development engineers to implement server compute without parasitic loads. Power down timing is customizable in iSM.
Supports a 2x CAN Bus Daughter Card and meets CAN Bus A/B/FD standards. It is ideal for automotive environments.
Noice
You going to make your 30 year old car smart?
I'm sure it was a nice car in its day... but why get something old that isn't even a classic?
That is a classic
There are a few jags I might want, but not over an Audi
It's so ugly 🤢
If i go older the Sport Quattro is interesting
XJ220 would be sweet.
Or the Audi 90
The Mazda Cosmo is quite interesting too, with CRT touch screen
Or the BMW 650csi
you work with HP products, you should be use to fickle equipment
Thank goodness I haven't had to see a Norwegian since 2019
Does that mean 2020 was the best year?

Started watching American Gods s3,
Just watched the first episode, didn't absolutely hate it, so that's a plus over last season.
But my goodness Ms. World's actress can not act
lol, random qoutes

hello
Cheers Nicholas_,
Are you getting on okay?
If anyone's interested, this week's free game on Epic is Star Wars Battlefront 2 (with DLC included).
Next week's gonna be Galactic Civilisations 3, if any of you are into 4X games.

What have I started lol

Regretting it yet? 😄
I can stop if you want, @scenic radish
Nah
Ok
Lol, I in bed. Pinging with phone is a hassle. @deft pewter @clear ferry @scenic radish
I'm having a good morning. Thanks.
My random devices on the wall are so cool and pretty
I just found 5 first gen Hue bulbs. yay, closet bulbs
I love how they call him a cyclist when really they mean child.
I'm gonna be the asshole here and say I'm glad he got hurt. Should teach him not to be a twat on public roads 🤷♂️
Only good part of the video is the car not getting totalled.
This shows how bad I am with CSS. I'm trying to make <figure>s look good and not be full width... only realised today that width: fit-content; is a thing.
heh
I did a couple of years of front-end dev before I got into a back-end role. I'd never go back... and I never want to be a 'full stack' developer.
1. Import Bootstrap
2. Use Bootstrap
3. ???
4. PROFIT
This is even worse... I'm trying out Hugo after seeing someone say it's really easy to get started with.
What they didn't say was that it's really easy to get started with if there's a theme that does exactly what you want already.
I'm already digging around in the templating files to change them... and having to learn their engine in the process.
@night zodiac what are those wires all over the walls?
I'm gonna guess humidity sensors and stuff.
He's a peasant and didn't get enclosures for them.
Is it possible to lock volume levels on certain speakers in Google speaker group ?
CO2 and a 7 segment
The 7 segment is to count occupancy, right? I thought you'd need a double panel for that.
:), I set it up to mqtt so I can send whatever I want but obviously showing co2 atm
Hi, hassio newb here, where is the best place to ask basic questions?
where would be best place to view peoples layouts/lovelace etc?
in my experience its always best to pick a topic in relation to the help/support you need
Good advice, Jonopoly
Now take your own advice
You can find the community forum here
perfect thanks bot
You're welcome
is bot alive!
sometimes
So close
I’m sure when I actually work from office, the bot will start going down.
...and everything
@clear ferry you had trådfri lights outside right?
Have they ever not worked because of the cold?
Nope
Never skips a beat
I don't do any automation with them though, I use them for coverage extension since I needed to replace all of them anyway
I was thinking of sending an illuminate at x% command and maybe go full brightness during motion, nothing more
Thanks :)
Yeah, I did some lol automation for Halloween come think of it
Pulsing the lights up and down when the doorbell rang
Sounds cool tbh!
My outside lights are all a single random color every night. I have my porch light on a motion sensor that makes it white and bright as fuck and then returns.
wled segments are neat
I think I can make a drinking game with them and automations
not much fun when there will only be 2 players
My Trådfri GU10 outside stop working randomly, but that's probably more because they are Trådfri GU10 than because of the cold.
I saw https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/kymklp/til_an_objective_test_found_that_there_was_no/ and was reminded of yesterday's chat 😄
You should see some of the audio stuff I do then@clever mortar
that looks like it is on a dimmer, lol
But all the bad ones are early ones. The ones I've bothered to replace work great
Oh, I've got a colleague who spends silly money on audio kit... where I'm happy with my basic Sonos Play:1 speakders 🤣
come to think of it
@low harness I've had that happen after a firmware upgrade, but then power cycled and it's fine, so... Once or twice
my outside ones are Hue colors
has anyone tried to use custom components after the latest update to address security issues?
I still need to use my Wyze sensors, and afraid of them not working after the update
If the update made any custom_component stop working, that's a sign you shouldn't have used it anyway.
See also #integrations-archived 😉
If you have questions about the security bulletin the only place to find the answers is in the blog post. If the information isn't there we can't tell you, because we don't know either.
PS: We also don't know when it'll be updated.
Soon, hopefully
We found the offender, and took them out the back for a stern talking to. Their replacement has promised to do better.
Mynd you, moose bites kan be pretti nasti
my update finished, it looks like the wyze sense custom component still works
so all is well, (I think it's working?)
that's all i cared about
haha
i bet its a real conversation starter
I can get the large collection and variety of shapes. I'm more interested in the sanitary processes involved after use.
I am pretty sure these bulbs are about 15 years old, other than the recessed shaped shit
CFLs like those are pretty old tech
Which is scary given that it wasn't that long ago they weren't
Scary because it sounds like someone we know?
It's all relative, I guess. Us under-60's often struggle to see your perspective 😄
But really, the difference in time-of-relevance for CFL vs tungsten filament is crazy.
Remember when bulbs used to take like two minutes to reach full brightness, and that made it feel modern?
Hell, I grew up with bakelite light fittings
Liar. You told me that if you couldn't get a fire going, you had to sleep in the dark.
Well, yes, but they created bakelite before I turned 200
The transition from incandescent to crappy CFL to good CFL to crappy LED to good LED has been interesting
Yeah. I'm just old enough to have experienced all of those things. The big push to CFL was when I was young.
I remember the early ones, that'd blink before turning on and fading to full brightness
😬
It's amazing how it's a technology that saves us so much money (via reduced electricity usage) and waste (via fewer burned out bulbs) but mostly goes unnoticed.
It's the heat difference I (still) notice
I used to begrudge paying so much for LED bulbs but they save money in their lifetime.
You mean being able to pull out an LED bulb that's been on for hours without cursing? 🤣
We had some 50w downlighters when we moved in, and I replaced most with LEDs. The ones that I haven't you really noticed, because you get hotter under them 😄
Oh man yeah, anyone remember these monstrosities? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFJO3emhOyY
Meet the grandfather of the compact fluorescent light. This device from GE is really interesting and ahead of its time, but far too weird to gain widespread acceptance. GE manufactured these adapters to shoehorn the standard circline tube into more everyday applications, and the result is kinda weird. This video's a quick exploration of this ...
Ah. I can't say I noticed the heat being radiated from them. Replacing incandescent bulbs was always fun if they'd been on recently.
Yes - I replaced one in an uplighter recently, and when I picked up the uplighter, I immediately put it back down 😄
Only trouble is finding high CRI GU10 bulbs with a wide angle and dimmable
i didn't realize these aqara motion sensors had temp o.O
Same here
They probably "do" in the same way the magnet sensors "do"...
Mine says 30 degrees in a room that's 23.
May be the SoC die temperature or something.
RTCGQ11LM
I bought that one today.
It had "Occupancy" and 2x Illuminance
Speaking of temps on multisensors, I'm quote proud of my Saturday morning project! Room temp in my menubar on my work machine
Sauce
I'm using jq here but probably poorly lmao
Thanks @night zodiac, you're right, that was totally an extra step
I usually build one liners a pipe at a time and json_pp was giving me pretty json output, instead of curl's one line output
Yeah thanks, saved me an extra cycle every 120s on my work machine
np, stdout solutions are always neat
For sure. I've got work experience with bash but almost nothing with rest APIs so this was a fun put together
I have been using mostly httpie these days but adding a dep isn't always great
Hmm yeah, I use httpie a lot for troubleshooting but wouldn't like to script with it either
I haven't script with it but it might be neat. they tell you how to do it in docs, 😛
Neat. I honestly just like the simple syntax and pretty colors
I use it for the sessions
Most of the time I'm on a server where I can't install stuff so I've gotten pretty fluent in wget and curl
I have been automating some things for servers with something called fabric if you haven't read into 'er
it is just a python library that lets you automate ssh command. you can write processing for it that runs on your pc but the needed ssh calls run on the server
and file transfers if needed
It saves me a ton of time for my specific use but not for everyone
Nice, I've been using ansible for the same thing for a while
Unless I'm misunderstanding what this is
this doesn't do anything to the other machine while ansible loads some modules to get going
Ansible only requires ssh on the remote hosts. It does like to use python on the remote host, which I've sometimes had to update on older OSes, but usually it's fine
I mean, I'm not saying there needs to be only one tool for the job or anything, I've just used ansible a lot in the past
yeah, I haven't made my own ansibles but fabric was ideal for me
I have used ansibles though
I have no experience with python syntax either so I wouldn't have gravitated towards fabric
It isn't too different from anything else. 'just lots of googling for me since I don't normally python either. I just let up a linter and make it yell at me any time I get wild.
Just like yo girl
I just overwhelmed my girlfriend by saying I will make scenes for her. I exposed all of our kitchen lights and pulled up wled for her. I think she is about to give up.
You didn't wanna keep her anyway, right?
Exposed huh 🤔
Those are rookie numbers.
You should just replace your ceiling with a pixel grid
Where would I ask for help if my home assistant instance booted in Safe mode?
for some reason they decided to build this place with a bajillion lights and siwtches
and I am adding more 😛
just some strips under all of the cabbinets and I am done
Where does the topic say?
can you share the code?
@unborn grail did you ever do segments? I set some up and they are neat
Sadly no hadn’t had time. Wife’s got me working on new floors, a window etc etc. I did throw together a fish tank controller last night :p
yeah, haha. I saw it last night. I was playing with my wled setup today and did segments and it is neat
I imagine it'd be cool on your setup
Hello all, im just started installing HA 🙂 im complety new to it
Good luck! @viscid zinc

No more cleaning, building, uploading to S3 each time I make a change. The hamsters can do that for me instead.
at least our tv commercials are sane
If by sane you mean they all end with a 30 seconds disclaimer telling you to check with your doctor before taking whatever it's selling 😄
Those are the adverts? From the length and frequency of them I thought they were the main feature 😛
🤣
20 minute episodes can be a fun format. They just needed something to fill the other 40 minutes of the hour.
It's been so long since I've watched regular TV that I don't know if it's still a thing in the UK... but I used to hate when you watch a late night movie and they interrupt it for the frigging 9pm news.
Schedule movies around things, don't air things in the middle.
Sometimes on the "main" channels, but it's not common any more
I wonder how long it'll be before streaming services make TV completely redundant.
We haven't bothered with 'real' TV for... 10+ years.
Used to just enjoy boxsets of DVDs, now it's all about Plex/Netflix/Disney+
Eh, I like watching random science/history programs
@deft pewter that is one heck of a chonky trash panda
Don't be mean! It's on a calorie-controlled diet. It's trying its best.
ive no clue in what channel i should ask this>
Im thinking of going from a VM to a dedicated machine for HA
im thinking between the Hardkernal N2+ 4gb or just get a used intel Nuc,
any advice regarding this ?
There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that, and #330990055533576204 if it's a question about the HA Blue. If you can't work out which is relevant, start in #general-archived

Where does the topic here say you should ask if you're unsure? 🤔
As the #rules says, read the topics 😉
However, if you're thinking of #330990055533576204 you'd be best asking there
(NUC though, go NUC)
this works aswell it seems 😛

lemme post that in OS, for future readers ^^
Maybe a #reception channel would be an idea, if only to try to divert a few more wayward souls from interrupting the #the-water-cooler ambiance of racoon-gifs and Norwegian-bashing
Doesn't matter what you call it, nobody reads 😉

Believe it or not, this is something that gets discussed fairly often in the top secret channels the plebeians non-coloured names can't see. There's no ideal solution.

I think you're mistaking us with the British monarchy.
I think we have something like this here
I believe it was established on Doctor Who that the British Monarchy is in fact descended from Werewolves
Is there a way to add a spreadsheet on github that people can add information to? I am trying to help with issue 1119 and gather common ( and uncommon) hardware and software to see if I can point to the cause of the Pi4 freezing
Why not create a Google Sheets ?
Why not male models?
I know how to create Google Sheets, I don't know how to create it an use it in a github issue.
You'd link it in the issue
You share a link to the Google sheets
Is the sheet stored with the issue?
No
GitHub issues don't have embedded, interactive documents.
It doesn't need to be...
Ive used good sheets a few times for different issues; this was mainly for various people to collate information about various devices to help determine what is common and what is unique
then we just added a link to the sheet inside the issue
That is what I am trying to do. So is the sheet on my drive and shared to all?

Thanks. Now another thing to learn
Those links are 2 examples
Looks like what I want thanks.
Can you link the issue you are trying to support?
A lot of people are having system freezes after updating the OS after 5.2
See #330990055533576204 then 😉
Thank goodness a lot of us don't run os then
Tinkerer, I don't understand your comment
I was being sarcastic 😛
A lot of people run it on a Pi. I wonder if there's a link.
Freezes and Pis
How about OS updates and freezes
I have no idea. I'm sensible and moved off the OS 🤣
I'm just saying... a lot of people that start using HA tend to pick HA OS and run it on a Pi.
They're running server software (albeit fairly lightweight) on a kid's toy.
Why am I getting performance issues?
It is entirely possible the problem is elsewhere, but this is straying well into non-lounge territory 😉
Again, I have no performance issues unless I update the os
My lounge question is answered
Yeah... move it along to #330990055533576204
We should get @clear ferry to post their stats just to wind everybody up
no shit 48 cores 1tb ram and 1ptb of storage
I am having performance issues relaxing in the lounge...haha
It reminds me when my wife starts the vacuum during a movie...
im ok just need to get my zigbee shit sorted ....guess i gotta buy this radio for zig2mqtt ....was hoping on the husbux stick with zha ....but no bono
https://www.home-assistant.io/blog/2021/01/14/security-bulletin/
sorry for stupid question, but which addons/integrations are custom?
the ones not included in core @leaden saffron
the ones you cannot install without using Hacs or manually adding them as a file
As I said when you first asked, questions about integrations should be asked in the #integrations-archived channel, and add-ons in the #add-ons-archived channel
The hammer hasn't had much use lately, right?
Time to bust it out for people that can't follow simple instructions?
doesnt that take some bullshit soldering or something
You could sodder some bullshit to it if you want.
And supports external antenna if you want to solder, but the built in one covers my whole house and more
any problems having multi radios for sheds and barns
Mods. Tell the mod to take it to #zigbee-archived
nah a couple simple questions dont hurt
That GIF is ... quite disconcerting
i agree
Thanks, so the add ons listed in supervisor /add-on-store are all not custom. f.e. ESPHOme?
Some are, some aren't
AFAIK the security bulletin has nothing to do with them though
I'm quite interested in who made it, there apparently is some ZigBee fetish out there, and that guy gets off while thinking about meshing and lqi
Oh yeah, finish that interview you dirty little sensor
Report your status
I'm almost there, change routers
some are and some are not what? custom?
why does this, who are custom, have nothing to do with the security bulletin?
The security bulletin is about Custom Components
The #integrations-archived you add yourself, not the ones listed on the HA site
There's an #integrations-archived channel for all talk about #integrations-archived? Madness!
i have heard a cup of tea and biegnets can help with anger
Depends on whether the cup is big enough to drown the offender in...
gotta start somewhere
dont waste the tea .....drink your tea and have a gallon of water for the waterboarding ...duh
Only a gallon? That's a short session.
Haven't you heard of recycling?
Dude's a fuckin clown
I made sure to get a raccoon emote on the reactions to that announcement for @last cedar. I don't want our raccoon friends to go unrepresented 🤣
And of course that'll kick off another round of people asking questions in here that we don't have the answers to.
Still wonder what the reason for the security uproar is lately but I also know these things have to be handled delicately. So props to the HASS team and I hope to read up on more details in a few days or weeks once this is not a concern anymore 👍
Thank you for the most sensible post I've seen so far about it
I simply know that revealing further infos now would do more damage than good.
Finally someone who gets it
Here's all you need to know to exploit 42% of the HA servers you find with Shodan
(number picked randomly)
I mean, is there even anything no-auth-wise that allows you to identify which custom components are loaded...
If the behaviour is at all predictable, then you can just brute force test for the problem
That's how it typically works 😄
unless you just brute force it on every hass install you find
that said - I'm slightly annoyed they didn't release which custom components were the offending parties.
Well, that'd be "not smart"
Then the bad actor know what to target, and can identify exactly how to target it
Wonder, if the HASS instance isn’t directly made available to the internet via “dumb port fowarding” but through a proxy, is this still an issue?
I'd expect possibly so
And someone just reading the new filtering rules doesn't provide enough info to work backwards and create an exploitable request? 😄
Unless you do something sensible, like limit what can be done remotely 😉 Like, limit access to only, say, webhooks, in which case it's more likely that you've stopped it
But, we don't know exactly what the problem is
And won't until the blog post is updated
I just solve the problem by not using custom integrations lol
:/ Custom integrations are far too useful to not be used.
Hm, sounds like a very deep rooted thing then. Interesting.
Yep, definitely interested for that security blog post a time from now 👌
But anyway, as I said - I'm fairly certain that the filtering rules in the code provide enough info to work backwords to create a request that could be used to exploit whichever integrations are offending
Well, we don't know the scope/scale
It may be widespread and deep, or it may be a thing with a very limited exposure, but earth shattering possibilities in those 4 cases
Better to take the instance off the web and only make it available via VPN? 😅
Well, the question you should always ask is - do you need to access the UI in a browser when you're away from home
I limit access because I don't
App 🤷♂️
I have one re-write, and then rules that allow access to the webhooks and Telegram's webhook, that's it
my hass instance has loads of webhooks associated with it, but it says they're deleted 🤨
I should try to make a custom component for ipmitool
good luck making my hass part of a botnet because its a pi zero
Ain't nothing wrong with pis
Anyone have an old pi3 they don't use and want to send over to me in Canada to use for octoprint? Lol
The Canada tax on even older raspberry pi is real!
Doing great! Thanks for asking! I pop in all the time but don't have much time these days to chat
Home schooling a kindergarten boy is the real deal
We've only had my daughter home for two weeks so far since February 2020, thankfully 😂
@hollow pawn just say it Tink is scary and mean
That's what you get for having a strong economy and real wages! How dare you!
you mean needing dollars for the medical system
Eh, a r510 cost me 2.5x a raspberry pi shipped from the US to Norway
Kinda reading for these custom components thing for 2 days and still cannot figure it out. Are ALL components are unsafe bc of some issue with the custom components mechanism or it is just some malicious components lurking in the wild? I mean, is it safe to use a component which code I know inside out and I'm sure it is doing anything bad?
If you have questions about the security bulletin the only place to find the answers is in the blog post. If the information isn't there we can't tell you, because we don't know either.
PS: We also don't know when it'll be updated.
If you have any questions, they're best asked on the linked forum thread.
☝️
Probability shutting off my hass instance know lol
Pfft, if you're not remotely accessible odds of being at risk are likely zero
Yeah, maybe cut off the internet for that machine
Maybe go to the forum thread 🤷♂️

What about the 5g's!!
That's funny. First the devs say that the impact can be huge and don't share any details. When folks are worried and assume the worst, post foil hat gifs....
Well, the impact can be huge, but there's no word on the actual risk
If the probability is near zero, you don't need to panic
If the probability is near one, you do
From all that's been said, it's appears that if your HA isn't remotely accessible the risk is zero
If you have no custom components the risk is also zero
@deft pewter I platonically love your considerations regarding raccoons ❤️
Thanks! This is very helpful.
There's also this: #the-water-cooler message
MITRE and CVE both say not to share info with attackers. People are getting awfully angry that the core HA devs are following security best practices 🤯
Actual security matters more than people's feelings.
Yes, the whole concept of home assistant is a huge potential minefield for security, I am more than happy that the devs are taking it seriously
From the bot post: If the information isn't there we can't tell you, because we don't know either.
Also lack of ETA is worrisome at best.
If past performance is anything to go by, it will be very soon
The devs have been on fire recently with new releases, and I have no reason to doubt they will sort this any slower than their usual pace
I meant what is the context of the leak?
What info?
certain custom integrations
which?
the ones that give you a warning when you try to run them

Nobody here can answer the questions you have
Besides the devs
these are not the droids you are looking for
And they won't answer here either 😉
I get that you cannot tell people the exact nature for fear of people attacking stuff
but the info is not sufficient
Then say that on the forum thread
Where you may just find that others have said that, and that has been answered 😉
@dense glen You can look at the commits
It's most likely an issue with a specific component, probably SQLi related.
See also #the-water-cooler message
Yeah so if it is in the commits why even bother not talking about it lol?
I know one thing for sure
Because the bit in HA is to fix what HA can
So people don't go searching for vulnerable components?
If it's not a serious issue with the underlying program then it doesn't really matter as long as you update.
Custom components involving raccoons shouldn't be trusted, mischievous little hands 🦝
The people who are going to exploit issues are not going to be confused by searching through commits lol
Skiddies maybe
I'd be more concerned if they did this with an issue directly linked with HA, not just a custom component.
What? Move quickly to fix the problem? 😛
Of course, how many people do you know actively search for SQL injections?
Most people will just use sqlmap on a publicly known vulnerability.
Probably a biased answer given my job...
We will provide more details about impacted custom integrations in the future.
Right well unless you're a black hat for a job then there's probably not many actively exploiting HA custom integrations.
Which I'm assuming will be after developers have released fixed versions, and people have had time to upgrade
Definitely, and as HA doesn't have automatic updates it's probably going to take some time.

Greetings all! Can you install a media player on hass os? I’ve got a RPi 400 and I’d like to control playback with the integrated keyboard. Currently running the docker version on raspbian, but I’d fancy the easy access to addons
media player as in audio or also video?
You can manually install hassio onto a Pi 4
after installing raspbian or w/e
e.g. installing xbmc / kodi on it alongside
Both
udder
I would not attempt to do both on the same device.
But you can probably barely manage it on a Pi4
Is that the supervised install?
How to install Hassioon Raspberry 4 - Raspbian Buster (2020-01-18) After a few days of frustration here is how I installed Hassio on my Raspberry. 😓 Download raspbian_latest.zip Flash using BalenaEtcher Eject and insert SD card into the PC Create empty file ssh.txt in the root (in the only one partition accessible from Windows Cr...
The issue is mainly about performance
do y'all have topics or #general-archived
secondary is the larger security worries
Thank you, this should do it!
Please also read the channel topic in #330944238910963714
You should not blindly use that install method 😉
Finally, support is off topic in this channel 😉
that method will work but you really do need to know what you are doing
Thanks, I’ll ask further questions there!
man, I had just installed custom components but hadn't even configured it.
Greetings all,
I'm wondering if you can send me in the right direction here. I want to create an automation that will play a MP3 through the media player on all of my chromecast.
I am not really sure where I should start with this. Thanks in advance for any direction you can point me in.
Cheers,
Joe
If you're not sure where to start, start by reading topics
There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that, and #330990055533576204 if it's a question about the HA Blue. If you can't work out which is relevant, start in #general-archived
No politics, religion, or any other obviously contentious topics! Please ensure you've read the Code of Conduct (https://www.home-assistant.io/code_of_conduct/), and #rules.
Remember when reporting spam to include a screenshot of the spam and the user's handle (eg @spammer#123)

There's info in the topic about that
Or rather, where you should be asking... (hint: not here)
You'd want to be asking elsewhere... like #integrations-archived 😉
Double teaming. Hell yeah.
biscuits! Apologies, I originally clicked on the integrations channel but made it back here somehow. Sorry 😦
I forgot my password for some reason - or I got locked out from new sessions (?) but I am still logged into on of my browses? I have tried to reset my password but it didn't work, and I have tried to create another administrator to log in with that, but it does not seems to actully be an administrator even though the frontend says so. Where should I ask to get help?

☝️ what does the channel topic say 😉
I'm just member number 42 😄
When will it be over...?!
I love/hate creating new AWS services. Got the blog going yesterday after some faffing around with Cloudfront to get HTTPS working with a static S3 website. Added a post today, didn't show up on the homepage 😮
Frigging Cloudfront cache needs invalidating on each deploy to force through changes...
At least that's one more thing I can just add to my GitHub Actions.
using Hugo or anything like that?
Where did he go? ||where did Hugo||
Well if you are using Hugo, it has magic to invalidate cloudfront while doing the s3 magics
you mudda trucka
I didn't find anything like that in the container version. I'm happy with GitHub Actions though.
nice!
haha, no blog for me since about 2003-2005 when I was doing big things with image maps
How come all the Hugo knowledge then?
I study all types of things in case it is the right too for the future. I just dig into it a bit, I'm not really an expert on much
I haven't really used it yet
Well... your words, not mine 😉
I went all-in on it when someone said it was easy... they lied.
I have used Jekyll in the past and plan on using Hugo instead for future
I guess it's like any blogging platform... writing a post is easy. Getting the damned themes and templates right is a pain.
yeah, I don't do much UI these days, haha. I stress too much about stuff that doesn't function
Learning all the internal organisation stuff is quite a lot for a newbie, even though I'm comfortable with code. Like which files take priority when you have a theme version and a project version.
Ah, I gave up on some of the UI stuff already... my pictures are responsive but I can't remember how to make embedded YouTube stuff responsive 😄
Doesn't look great on mobile...
like force it 16:9?
my squirrel cam has a pretty barebone example of that
css hax
Nah, aspect ratio is fine. I mean being responsive to different screen sizes.
yeah, I mean you need magic to keep it the same res for when the width can be any size depending on the shit. youtube might handle that for you though
Desktop: http://prntscr.com/x2byyb
Mobile: http://prntscr.com/x2c2hr
Looks even worse on my actual mobile, that's just Chrome dev tools.
SCSS, no framework.
okay, you will want to set up some media queries probably
If I knew what the responsive CSS was from a framework, I'd copy it 😄
Eww. Media queries are nasty. I don't wanna have different rules for different breakpoints.
lol
I need to build an alternate header that's more compact - that's a job for media queries.
Media should just scale.
well to an extent. I size media differently a lot depending on the size
text and everything else is the same
Just found a good example, actually. This works on my browser: https://avexdesigns.com/blog/responsive-youtube-embed
But you shouldn't need to do anything fancy with media queries for text/images/video that's directly inserted on the page. It's the unknown size of YouTube embeds that messes this up.
yeah, I threw a % on my squirrel cam and left it. 😛
Ah... one good thing I've already been playing with in Hugo is shortcodes.
I use bulma for most things these days unless it is something super simple
I want to write everything in markdown without having to inject raw HTML... but markdown doesn't allow target="_blank". Custom shortcode, job done.
I hadn't heard of bulma either until I was already halfway through building this in Hugo.
Might give it a try but I quite like what I've got so far.
Took a theme and customised it to get started quickly.
If you like doing things yourself, look into tailwind
I wouldn't say I like it.
Did a couple of years of front-end work before and would never do it again.
I said that poorly tailwind does a bunch of stuff for you which is why it exists, but not as opinionated as others
why do I feel like I am thinking of the wrong name
tailwind doesn't sound right but does
lol
