they have them single color too though

#

asb, if you are looking into adding temp/humidity to all of your rooms

#

the new hip thing to do is these screen/sensor things

so you need an esp32 or something that can forward BLE for all of your rooms

last cedar
#

@clear ferry are there zigbee versions of those temp/ humidity sensors?

clear ferry

Not with display afaik

#

But I use the regular Xiaomi ones around the house

last cedar
#

Doesn't need a display, I will look

#

Thanks

clear ferry
#

I got 4 for 250NOK at some point, use 8 around my house

molten osprey
#

I'm going to give up on my $2 433MHz flood detectors

#

Doesnt Xiaomi have some cheap ones?

last cedar
#

I am thinking 1 in each room. Flood detection would be very useful, might go the door entry/alarm system route for that though

molten osprey
#

I've actually had a water pipe burst TWICE in my previous apartment. So I consider it a genuine danger 🙂

#

The cheap detectors I have now seem unreliable.

glossy inlet
#

I have the aqara (xiaomi) water leak detectors. I haven't tested them with water, but I did use a pair of scissors to short them and they worked as expected (using deconz + conbee ii)

molten osprey
#

Nice.

glossy inlet
#

i have one under my water heater tank. am going to put other ones at different corners of the house where water might leak in from outside.

molten osprey

For me it's under every sink.

glossy inlet
#

ooh... good call... might have to order a few more from ali

molten osprey
#

Got a link from where you ordered yours on ali?

molten osprey
#

$15 a pop ...

#

I guess if they actually work ...

clear ferry
#

A lot of people use those

#

In the shower etc for shower detection

molten osprey
#

Oh that sounds like something I need

#

What does one do with shower detection?

clear ferry
#

Turn on bathroom fans etc

#

For those who need that

molten osprey
#

Oh I use rhum for that

clear ferry
#

I would just use a temperature sensor on the outlet pipe tbh

#

If I needed it

molten osprey
#

relative humidity seems the most appropriate thing to measure

#

that is why you need the fan, after all ... to reduce the humidity

clear ferry
#

Makes sense in some countries

#

We don't have bathroom fans in Norway

#

Or, I've seen it... Twice in my life

molten osprey
#

in NL we do, here in TH too

last cedar
#

We don't even have bathrooms in Sweden

molten osprey
#

haha

#

I started watching a Norwegian show on Netflix last night

#

first time, I think

clear ferry
#

Which one?

molten osprey
#

it's about russians 'peacefully invading' your country or something? hang on.

#

"Occupied" is the title on Netflix

vast dove
molten osprey
#

"Okkupert" IMDb 7.7

clear ferry
#

Really, I've only seen it in two houses, and I usually take a shit in every house I visit KEKW

last cedar
#

"kom fram ubåts jävel"

clear ferry
molten osprey
#

7.7 is not too bad

clear ferry
last cedar
#

3.6 is not great, not terrible though

molten osprey
#

what is 3.6?

last cedar
#

Chernobyl

molten osprey
#

I think there are two about CHernobyl

last cedar
#

The meter that maxed at 3.6 (roentgens per hour????) measured 3.6

molten osprey
#

one on Netflix and one on HBO

#

OH!

#

haha

#

sorry ... missed that reference 😉

last cedar
#

It is 200IQ

clear ferry
last cedar
#

If you make the meter only go to like 25 volts, everything is max 25 volts

molten osprey
#

yeah yeah

clear ferry
#

Who needs high voltage, my entire house is 25v!

molten osprey
#

hehe

last cedar
#

Apparently it was closer to 15000, not 3.6 at the actual core, so meter was a bit off

clear ferry
#

Reminds me.... I need to get my esp+pir sensors running

molten osprey
#

433 ftw

clear ferry
#

🤢

molten osprey
#

hehe

molten osprey
#

i'm in the process of sorting out my wifi ... until that is proper done, 433 is the one technology where i dont need to worry "if the signal will make it to the base" ... it will 🙂

#

waiting for someone from europe to come visit thailand, and carry a unifi wifi 6 access point over

last cedar
#

I mean, everything has it use. Even 433. Even if that is only polluting the air with waves 😂

molten osprey
#

Oh we've got a lot of pollution of the air here anyway!

#

AQI 192 this morning

#

dont think i can send photos on here, can i?

last cedar
#

There are lots of standards, and so many different things using different standards. Not knocking 433 but a lot of old tech needs to die

#

Yes, share pics (sfw!)

last cedar
#

Thicc

molten osprey
#

and the worst thing is .... this is the time of year where temperatures are actually nice in this country

#

but i cant enjoy it because ... i'm not going out in that!

last cedar
#

Yeah, reaöly nasty tbh

#

Is it better than usual with corona?

molten osprey
#

it is ... and entirely preventible

last cedar
#

We hear all the time here how air is better because of corona, but yours looked terrible

molten osprey
#

this is not a year-round thing

#

this is the result of farmers burning their fields all over the mehkong delta

#

(the cheapest way to get it ready for the next seeding round)

last cedar
#

Oh, very environmentally friendly

molten osprey
#

yeah

#

you'd think the government would do something about this. but then, they need the donations from the big agricultural companies. and those guys dont want to pay farmers enough so they can do this annual turnaround 'properly'.

#

money. as usual.

clear ferry
clever mortar
#

If you're in the EU then Slaesh is worth a look at, but be aware that many people complain about his customer service (or lack of)

#

He often goes radio silent for extended periods

#

I experienced this myself, and thankfully I already had a ZZH so didn't mind waiting a couple of months for a stick to appear in the post

molten osprey
#

searching ali for CC2652 doesnt yield much

clever mortar
#

They're complaining on the Z2M Discord about him doing this again

clear ferry
#

The cc1352 took 3 days from Houston to Norway

#

Gr8

molten osprey
#

nothing that resembles that picture anyway

#

Looks like something I'll have to add to my EU shopping list.

#

So far, I have one Zigbee device. A light sensor. It's ok, I guess.

clever mortar
#

The Xiaomi Mijia one rocks 😉

molten osprey
#

wait what

clever mortar
molten osprey
#

Oh

#

yeah thats the one I have

clever mortar
#

It's almost as good as my much more expensive Z-Wave ones, but at a fraction of the price

#

The only way to get better is to get a Aeotec Multi-sensor 6, and run it on USB power

molten osprey
#

I expected the low light measurements to be more granular to be honest

#

but i guess "less than 1 lux is zero lux"

clever mortar
#

Low light measurement sucks for all sensors

last cedar
#

Dark or light? :P

clever mortar
#

However, there's also an illuminance (non-lux) value

#

Have a look at that

molten osprey
#

yeah true

#

When you mentioned the Xiaomi Mijia one, I thought Xiaomi had a CC2652-based controller you recommend

#

because that i could probably get locally

last cedar
#

I would like an outside light sensor, triggering outside lighting with time switches is painful

molten osprey
#

damnit .... i have someone coming from London to Bangkok carrying a bunch of stuff. if only we had this conversation a few days ago!

last cedar
#

Lux value would be a nice start, then use blue iris and aitool to determine if a person is there, and increase brightness of lights (thinking standard e27 lights that are dimmable)

molten osprey
#

nice

#

i was going to put mine out on the balcony

#

and turn lights on inside based on light values

#

but ... signal wont reach 🙂

last cedar
#

Also thinking of number plate recognition for my car/ cars to trigger a welcome home automation

molten osprey
#

(which is probably because of the shitty controller stick!? )

last cedar
#

Perhaps yes

molten osprey
#

plate recognition! NICE!

last cedar
#

Zigbee might work better there because it can/does mesh

molten osprey
#

my light sensor IS zigbee

#

but ... just one device 🙂

last cedar
#

May also do a disarm from alarm system to trigger welcome home

hushed basalt
#

Just use mobile presence detection

last cedar
#

Yeah, mesh isn't so useful with 1 device 😂

clear ferry
#

-19 and sun

last cedar
#

I could also do that badtelcotech

#

Many ways to sort it

#

Looks beautiful Atx

molten osprey
#

i once had a conversation with an ISP sales person who said I would get a free "mesh router" with my plan. and tried to sell me this as a great thing. I asked to explain how a single mesh router would make ANY difference. they said "it just would".

hushed basalt
#

I use person state triggers then attach trackers to persons

hushed basalt
#

So you can use ble, wifi, app geolocation together

molten osprey
clear ferry
#

Now you know it more

molten osprey
#

a mesh of one is like a party of one!

last cedar
#

My alarm will be seperate though, keypad on door and garage.keypad between garage/house (4 total)

molten osprey
#

its not a party!

#

@last cedar keypads is a little 1980s ?

hushed basalt
#

I just have a virtual alarm in HA

clear ferry
#

But usually mesh routers are more powerful and have more transmission power

#

Like the Google WiFi one

last cedar
#

@molten osprey I was born 87, yes :)

You should see some of the audio stuff I do then@clever mortar

But all the bad ones are early ones. The ones I've bothered to replace work great

Oh, I've got a colleague who spends silly money on audio kit... where I'm happy with my basic Sonos Play:1 speakders 🤣

@low harness I've had that happen after a firmware upgrade, but then power cycled and it's fine, so... Once or twice

has anyone tried to use custom components after the latest update to address security issues?

I still need to use my Wyze sensors, and afraid of them not working after the update

If the update made any custom_component stop working, that's a sign you shouldn't have used it anyway.

night zodiac

I am pretty sure these bulbs are about 15 years old, other than the recessed shaped shit

clever mortar
#

CFLs like those are pretty old tech

#

Which is scary given that it wasn't that long ago they weren't

low harness
#

Scary because it sounds like someone we know?

deft pewter
low harness
#

But really, the difference in time-of-relevance for CFL vs tungsten filament is crazy.

#

Remember when bulbs used to take like two minutes to reach full brightness, and that made it feel modern?

clever mortar
#

Hell, I grew up with bakelite light fittings

deft pewter
#

Liar. You told me that if you couldn't get a fire going, you had to sleep in the dark.

clever mortar
#

Well, yes, but they created bakelite before I turned 200

#

The transition from incandescent to crappy CFL to good CFL to crappy LED to good LED has been interesting

deft pewter
#

Yeah. I'm just old enough to have experienced all of those things. The big push to CFL was when I was young.

clever mortar
#

I remember the early ones, that'd blink before turning on and fading to full brightness

#

😬

deft pewter
#

It's amazing how it's a technology that saves us so much money (via reduced electricity usage) and waste (via fewer burned out bulbs) but mostly goes unnoticed.

clever mortar
#

It's the heat difference I (still) notice

deft pewter
#

I used to begrudge paying so much for LED bulbs but they save money in their lifetime.

#

You mean being able to pull out an LED bulb that's been on for hours without cursing? 🤣

clever mortar
#

We had some 50w downlighters when we moved in, and I replaced most with LEDs. The ones that I haven't you really noticed, because you get hotter under them 😄

Meet the grandfather of the compact fluorescent light. This device from GE is really interesting and ahead of its time, but far too weird to gain widespread acceptance. GE manufactured these adapters to shoehorn the standard circline tube into more everyday applications, and the result is kinda weird. This video's a quick exploration of this ...

▶ Play video
deft pewter
#

Ah. I can't say I noticed the heat being radiated from them. Replacing incandescent bulbs was always fun if they'd been on recently.

clever mortar
#

Yes - I replaced one in an uplighter recently, and when I picked up the uplighter, I immediately put it back down 😄

#

Only trouble is finding high CRI GU10 bulbs with a wide angle and dimmable

night zodiac

night zodiac

I haven't script with it but it might be neat. they tell you how to do it in docs, 😛

static basalt
#

Neat. I honestly just like the simple syntax and pretty colors

night zodiac
#

I use it for the sessions

static basalt
#

Most of the time I'm on a server where I can't install stuff so I've gotten pretty fluent in wget and curl

night zodiac
#

I have been automating some things for servers with something called fabric if you haven't read into 'er

#

it is just a python library that lets you automate ssh command. you can write processing for it that runs on your pc but the needed ssh calls run on the server

#

and file transfers if needed

#

It saves me a ton of time for my specific use but not for everyone

static basalt
#

Nice, I've been using ansible for the same thing for a while

#

Unless I'm misunderstanding what this is

night zodiac
#

this doesn't do anything to the other machine while ansible loads some modules to get going

static basalt
#

Ansible only requires ssh on the remote hosts. It does like to use python on the remote host, which I've sometimes had to update on older OSes, but usually it's fine

#

I mean, I'm not saying there needs to be only one tool for the job or anything, I've just used ansible a lot in the past

night zodiac
#

yeah, I haven't made my own ansibles but fabric was ideal for me

#

I have used ansibles though

static basalt
#

I have no experience with python syntax either so I wouldn't have gravitated towards fabric

night zodiac
#

It isn't too different from anything else. 'just lots of googling for me since I don't normally python either. I just let up a linter and make it yell at me any time I get wild.

frigid horizon
#

I mean, is there even anything no-auth-wise that allows you to identify which custom components are loaded...

clever mortar
#

If the behaviour is at all predictable, then you can just brute force test for the problem

#

That's how it typically works 😄

frigid horizon
#

unless you just brute force it on every hass install you find

#

that said - I'm slightly annoyed they didn't release which custom components were the offending parties.

clever mortar
#

Well, that'd be "not smart"

#

Then the bad actor know what to target, and can identify exactly how to target it

inner lava
clever mortar
#

I'd expect possibly so

frigid horizon
#

And someone just reading the new filtering rules doesn't provide enough info to work backwards and create an exploitable request? 😄

clever mortar
# clever mortar I'd expect _possibly_ so

Unless you do something sensible, like limit what can be done remotely 😉 Like, limit access to only, say, webhooks, in which case it's more likely that you've stopped it

#

But, we don't know exactly what the problem is

#

And won't until the blog post is updated

scenic radish
#

I just solve the problem by not using custom integrations lol

:/ Custom integrations are far too useful to not be used.

inner lava
#

Hm, sounds like a very deep rooted thing then. Interesting.
Yep, definitely interested for that security blog post a time from now 👌

frigid horizon
#

But anyway, as I said - I'm fairly certain that the filtering rules in the code provide enough info to work backwords to create a request that could be used to exploit whichever integrations are offending

clever mortar
#

Well, we don't know the scope/scale

#

It may be widespread and deep, or it may be a thing with a very limited exposure, but earth shattering possibilities in those 4 cases

inner lava
#

Better to take the instance off the web and only make it available via VPN? 😅

Greetings all,

I'm wondering if you can send me in the right direction here. I want to create an automation that will play a MP3 through the media player on all of my chromecast.

I am not really sure where I should start with this. Thanks in advance for any direction you can point me in.

Cheers,

Joe

There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that, and #330990055533576204 if it's a question about the HA Blue. If you can't work out which is relevant, start in #general-archived

There's info in the topic about that

#

Or rather, where you should be asking... (hint: not here)

I forgot my password for some reason - or I got locked out from new sessions (?) but I am still logged into on of my browses? I have tried to reset my password but it didn't work, and I have tried to create another administrator to log in with that, but it does not seems to actully be an administrator even though the frontend says so. Where should I ask to get help?

I'm just member number 42 😄

When will it be over...?!

Though, not strictly true. It'll end when people learn to think first, act later

I love/hate creating new AWS services. Got the blog going yesterday after some faffing around with Cloudfront to get HTTPS working with a static S3 website. Added a post today, didn't show up on the homepage 😮

#

Frigging Cloudfront cache needs invalidating on each deploy to force through changes...

#

At least that's one more thing I can just add to my GitHub Actions.

using Hugo or anything like that?

green inlet
#

Where did he go? ||where did Hugo||

night zodiac
#

Well if you are using Hugo, it has magic to invalidate cloudfront while doing the s3 magics

nice!

deft pewter
#

You have a blog, Bu?

#

'Jus' Illinois Thangs'

night zodiac
#

haha, no blog for me since about 2003-2005 when I was doing big things with image maps

deft pewter
#

How come all the Hugo knowledge then?

night zodiac
#

I study all types of things in case it is the right too for the future. I just dig into it a bit, I'm not really an expert on much

#

I haven't really used it yet

deft pewter
#

Well... your words, not mine 😉

#

I went all-in on it when someone said it was easy... they lied.

night zodiac
#

I have used Jekyll in the past and plan on using Hugo instead for future

deft pewter
#

I guess it's like any blogging platform... writing a post is easy. Getting the damned themes and templates right is a pain.

night zodiac
#

yeah, I don't do much UI these days, haha. I stress too much about stuff that doesn't function

deft pewter
#

Learning all the internal organisation stuff is quite a lot for a newbie, even though I'm comfortable with code. Like which files take priority when you have a theme version and a project version.

#

Ah, I gave up on some of the UI stuff already... my pictures are responsive but I can't remember how to make embedded YouTube stuff responsive 😄

#

Doesn't look great on mobile...

night zodiac
#

like force it 16:9?

#

my squirrel cam has a pretty barebone example of that

#

css hax

deft pewter
#

Nah, aspect ratio is fine. I mean being responsive to different screen sizes.

night zodiac
#

yeah, I mean you need magic to keep it the same res for when the width can be any size depending on the shit. youtube might handle that for you though

deft pewter
#

Looks even worse on my actual mobile, that's just Chrome dev tools.

night zodiac
#

are you using just raw CSS without a framework?

#

or tailwind or anything

deft pewter
#

SCSS, no framework.

night zodiac
#

okay, you will want to set up some media queries probably

deft pewter
#

If I knew what the responsive CSS was from a framework, I'd copy it 😄

#

Eww. Media queries are nasty. I don't wanna have different rules for different breakpoints.

night zodiac
#

lol

deft pewter
#

I need to build an alternate header that's more compact - that's a job for media queries.

#

Media should just scale.

night zodiac
#

well to an extent. I size media differently a lot depending on the size

#

text and everything else is the same

deft pewter
#

But you shouldn't need to do anything fancy with media queries for text/images/video that's directly inserted on the page. It's the unknown size of YouTube embeds that messes this up.

night zodiac
#

yeah, I threw a % on my squirrel cam and left it. 😛

deft pewter
#

Ah... one good thing I've already been playing with in Hugo is shortcodes.

night zodiac
#

I use bulma for most things these days unless it is something super simple

deft pewter
#

I want to write everything in markdown without having to inject raw HTML... but markdown doesn't allow target="_blank". Custom shortcode, job done.

#

I hadn't heard of bulma either until I was already halfway through building this in Hugo.

#

Might give it a try but I quite like what I've got so far.

#

Took a theme and customised it to get started quickly.

night zodiac
#

If you like doing things yourself, look into tailwind

deft pewter
#

I wouldn't say I like it.

#

Did a couple of years of front-end work before and would never do it again.

night zodiac
#

I said that poorly tailwind does a bunch of stuff for you which is why it exists, but not as opinionated as others

#

why do I feel like I am thinking of the wrong name

#

tailwind doesn't sound right but does

night zodiac
#

It is tailwind. Rather than having one class do a bunch of things for you, it is a bunch of utility classes that you can use however you want

#

I was squinting at your picture not realizing that wasn't an image
