I can hear tone through the wall in that spot!
So legit the electrician didn't finish the job, it got drywalled in, and he got offended when I called him out on it.
Booshee, got my broadlink today
I did too pdobrian. I talked about my adventures above about assuming way too much and wasting my time :p
You send signals straight from HA and I assumed I had to config stuff with phone and then call based off of that
It aint EZ-PZ
I had success jjust converting codes online rather than recording
What is the name of the box I need to buy and install?
I am going to see if maybbe I can switch my tv to commercial mode and see if I get separate on/off commands
Aw crap there's no outlet in here for a switch either lol
poe
I figured like 2021 right. Like just add the code in the manual....29482....and we rock’s
That's not a bad idea
pdo, there are a few scripts for the common jazz
I had success converting things from random-ass codes too
Yea, I have seen them. Haven’t gotten that far. Are you using the smartir custom integration or the HAss integration ?
sec, looking through all of the chrome history from my adventures earliuer
took me awhile to find all of thsi shit so I didn't have to install people's stuff, lol
all browser tools
I got it added and then 🍺🍻🍹🧉
what
Pretty sure smartIr is mostly for thermostats
The HAss integration will prob do for me
http://www.irdb.tk/convert/
http://tomeko.net/online_tools/hex_to_base64.php?lang=en
https://www.jdoodle.com/embed/v0/eBD
On-line javascript hexadecimal to base 64 converter.
oh, no idea what that is
Lmao....ok,@let me figure it out and get back,to you
I was using something called discrete codes so the normal stuff is probably easier
I was going to try and figure out how I did it earlier and tell ya, haha
what TV ya got
or are you just focused on thermostat
Do you do windows?
Dr. Zzz has a pretty good video on the first version that clues you in on how to find codes
well I'll tell you how I do it if you want, not a ton of stuffs.
SourceForge
Download Broadlink Manager for free. Broadlink Manager is a very simple way to work with broadlink rm. Broadlink Manager is a very simple way to work with broadlink rm products. when i just started working with Broadlink via Home Assistant i found out that teching the system a new code was not that simple and user friendly.
oh, I saw that way. I didn't want to teach
That’s what I am going to do
And then I am going to go fuck all the young chics with my rm4 pro
okay, well what I do is have been finding the codes on there. I paste it into the first convert tool. I remove all of the spaces from that, paste it into the jdoodle. get the output of that and then do the hex to bse64 and it works, lol
64:code
then yelling to my girlfriend across the house to see if it works
Ok 🙏🏻, U&ME_Rm4_Pro 4 Lyfe
ignore me messing up
I could just write a script to do this so much easier than all of the BS in there but oh well, won't use it much maybe
meh, might do it for fun tomorrow
Lol jerk
just wait until you flash tasmota on an IR blaster and realize it's always waiting to receive commands and you can use those to automate other things
I have the components to make some IR jazz and have made some for work but I wanted something not too ugly for the bedroom
what are some tasmota flashable ones, I'll have to look
didn't even realize tasmota did IR
yeah, sounds weird. the web panel didn't seem very oriented towards that but very good for buttons and relays
The stitch ones were tuya-convertable, the moesgo was manual flash
Well, you can use it in HA is what I mean
I can't remember the exact uses
I thought I configured the pulse in there for a few second press
maybe I did that with a mqtt call actually
that sounds more correct
PulseTime or something
googles
yes, PulseTime,
I didn't actually ending up using that sonoff relay
is there any database admin integration where i can clean up some bad data?
or do i have to go in manually with sqlite command line and do it?
@scenic radish I have a tuya one I got off ali and flashed a couple years ago. What "extra" are you automating with yours?
disco lights
When it detects certain button presses from my TV remote when the TV is off it triggers the "lights off when TV on" automation
Similarly when it detects the power button pressed when the TV is on it triggers the opposite automation
Smart tv, or based on voltage/amperage?
Vizio integration is local polling, so there's up to a 10 second delay between detecting state changes and it's 2021 so I don't deal with that
Yeah, smart TV
And it controls the sound bar and living room fan, both of which are IR only
Yeah makes sense. My big screen is not smart, so I have to do it with my gocontrol plug to see if it's on or not
I got mine literally to turn off my tv and that is it
Power metering
I can automate turning it on with chromecast but not off without assistant relay trash
I didn't look to see if HA can do the fancier IR stuff for remotes with displays
DOIT
I will buy shit I don't even need solely because I want to flash tasmota on something else
I can stop whenever I want
I think I would only really use tasmota for buttons and relays or stuffs like that. I like esphome a lot
Lol
Yeah depending on what you're doing ESPHome definitely would make more sense
For something like a smart plug, switch, etc. Tasmota is king IMO
yeah, I like to take complexity out of things if I can and tasmota keeps it basic
it has just enough for what we needed
But esphome has a lot more options, not limited to mqtt, etc
Matt is the homie
Not that I don't love mqtt (or matt)
Tediore is basic
With my new house though, I have a LOT more space and needs than I did in my condo, so I'm probably going to be learning a lot of new things
Gratz
Cameras are my new obsession
Still in a condo, hope to move to a house in the next few years
Until then I'll enjoy effectively just paying people to do all the exterior maintenance
I like renting
BUT
So I'm still living at my old place for now, for my kids school for the rest of the year. Go down to the new place on the weekends and to check on it during the week...
sounds like a perfect grow operation spot
I did not like renting, but it was a good stepping stone
I have a doorbell camera and the last 2 days someone else has been coming to my house and landscaping
Like legit
I have no idea why
oh dear. I need to pay my yard services. I keep forgetting
I hid the bill from myself
stealing your leaves
I had to pay someone a lot of money to do that and then go out there myself and finish the job, lol
But two days in a row, they are coming over, raking, trimming my hedges, putting it all in bags and putting the waste in their car
Do they think someone else owns it still? lol
The last person to own it, for a full year, was a contractor who was just flipping the property. Prior to that, it was a woman who passed away a year before the contractor bought it
So... Doubtful?
maybe someone thinks the woman that passes is still around but doesn't bother them but feels like cleaning up for them? lol
Idk
🍻
I'm not complaining
I do feel a little bad because the hedges they are trimming are hedges my wife wants me to remove this spring
oh no
I'm pretty sure they are dead 🙄
Did you see them in the summer?
google maps?
Creep
too see his own hedges, lol
Google maps photo is from like 3 years ago
I wonder how many times a HA integration can update zigbee2mqtt per second(if), lol
haha, you got all of the packs?
I wish borderlands 1 multiplayer on pc wasn't so bad 😦
makes me so fucking sad
unless they improved it
Oh borderlands 1 is one of my favorite games
Tediore and I were just chatting about our borderlands 1 adventures the other day
If destiny didn't have such smooth gameplay, it would probably be my #1
What do you mean?
I mean, like 5 lights making them sync with music and such
I wonder if it can keep up
or just stay consistent, that is. not about delay
I can offset
MQTT is very lightweight
As far as commands/second, the coordinator will play a big part in that
I usually have problems with the lights themselves getting overloaded
I'll have to write some sample code in a bit when I am more sober
If I flood them too much they just decide to stop responding
Kbye BL1 tyme
Could be because they are lightify and tradfri though
I hope you get the best loots, Tediore
It will punish you if you don't
Zigbee might be the slower part of that. It's not really designed for high traffic (you might have seen how slowly OTA updates go). MQTT is fine, I've been running Luciferin on my D1 mini for the last few days and it's kept up a steady 30fps all day.
I have no issue pushing a ton of updates in and out of zigbee2mqtt at once though
Reckon you'd get responsive lights if you tried 30fps+?
I'm not saying it can't handle a burst of traffic if you want to control multiple devices... I'm just not sure how well it'd handle sustained traffic.
Yeah, ZigBee probably ain't good for RGB control backlit
But I tested it a bit with webhooks for plex
And play pause play pause play pause was as responsive as expected
Did you try pause play pause play pause
Agreed. This is something I fought with a few years ago. At least with the couple zigbee light brands I tried, they would all effectively become ddosed if too many comments went through in a short period of time. Even if it was manual adjustments
Did you try the Konami code?
🤣
That is something I did not try. The brands I had tried were cree, lightify, and tradfri, but never tried hue. I don't think those are compatible with the konami code, but perhaps there is an integration that could resolve that 🙄
-16 tomorrow
That's the relative temperature between yesterday and tomorrow too
Yes
:thermometer:
Celsius To Fahrenheit
42 degrees celsius = 107.6 degrees fahrenheit!
I wonder what the wet bulb temperature was
We're rapidly approaching pockets of climate that will unsustainable for human life,
Time to buy up land in Norway
The problem is the Norwegians

Gul bøj

If I had a job lined up, and they spoke English/ Swedish, I would consider moving
Norwegian companies don't care if you speak English or Swedish tbh
A lot of people I work with speak only English still after many years in Norway
No, but I won't understand shit haha
Pssh, Norwegian is easier than Swedish to understand for English speakers
According to my sources

Yeah, Hue is just magic I guess
Is that the guy that was the nerdy IT support in Nikita?
Nope 😐
Yeah, I realised afterwards. They look similar to me.
I haven't seen Breaking Bad but I remember him in Westworld.
BoJack is probably one of the best shows I've seen in the last 5 years
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thBN3yP6kbw this is the type of shit I love to watch. Ty Mr Nick
is there a discord shortcut to type a link and prevent it from getting the embed from the start?
Yes, embed it in <>

I am watching this video and realizing the remote to my bidet is probably not IR, lol
I had dreams of IR blasting for warm seats but this looks like work
lol, I am not opening up my bidet/remote
🤢
Just an idea for the developers and Nabu.casa maybe for the extra money that subscribers pay for the cloud service maybe there could be a dedicated discord channel or help website. There's nothing worse than coming onto discord to ask for some help and getting condescending and asinine responses. We are not all code know it alls. If you don't have something nice to say....
Suggestions go over on the forums 😉
I don't know where you think the paid support will come from, to be quite honest. The 'experts' are all on this server and most of them are volunteers.
A paid support server would be very... quiet.
" the extra money that subscribers pay for the cloud service" ? o.O
Didn't you know you can spend the same dollar twice?
That is an excellent way to put it.
Maybe a little condescending and asinine though.
Thanks for proving my point. So being an " expert volunteer" means that is the proper way to act. Gotcha. My apologies for not being a know it all code writing nerd. Just wanted to ask a few questions but from seeing how you "expert volunteers" act I guess that wouldn't be the appropriate thing to do.
If you have a problem with individuals, feel free to take it up with the mods.
Coming in here ranting isn't going to end up being a positive experience for anyone involved.
@minor mesa you can always try a different time.
You can get in touch with any of the folk in green if you have problems with people 🙂
Well , paying for #cloud-archived has nothing to do with support
It is so_you_ don't have to spend 20 minutes to set up Google assistant yourself
or just lazy 😉
Exactly
i actually used the cloud at my parents to make things easier and you know what it actually made it easier
@minor mesa on another note, I hope you remember today very well, a good lesson to be humble when you become a pro. Since all here started where you started, sadly roots are easily forgotten. Best of luck on your search for help.
know it all code writing nerd
My favourite part so far... they're annoyed that they've encountered someone they consider rude but don't realise how this could be considered rude. 🤔
Code monkeys, I demand support now
i just watched that episode the other day lol
Wow you are lagging behind@shy comet
@shy comet you sticking to 120 miles ?

@clear ferry i actually started a full rewatch and im half way lol
Isn't that season 16ish
@tidal bronze the RV trip is sounding beter and better but yea not going anywhere for a bit
RV....nice. where were you planning to go ?
no idea its just the perfect way to be away from people wehn your trying to avoid them and keep distance
Lmao.
Will be good with a RV when the zombie apocalypse comes to the States
@clear ferry did you try to go on without thinking about the states at least for a day? Is that place for freaking boring ? Norway ?
It's hard to ignore a huge scab
@shy comet RV places are open?
he just parks in his yard
@clear ferry it's not on your face right, just move along worry about shit in your country.
we hit up Neptunes Net every now and then to help support them since they turned it into a massive drivethru
Oh.
Did PCH to up north few days back. Nothing like the coast. And low 60s a charm as well
Hey, so I'm new to HA. I've got it all installed and running, imported all my services etc and got it working on my phone, happy days. I'm looking to start building some automations but I seem to have run dry on good YouTube videos to guide/teach me. Had anyone got some recommendations for a newbie on where I can pick up tips and just general knowledge?
Generally videos are outdated and useless within a few months, read the docs and discuss in the channels further down here
The community forums also have a lot of people sharing their setup
When reading the docs, I'd suggest reading both what seems relevant to you and what doesn't. Look at ALL of the examples, even if it seems irrelevant, as they will be very useful if you learn by seeing what others are doing. There was a recent HA online conference which should be up to date for ideas. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKsVm4cWHDQDGRXnybFUOLlcDWPsroGGB
If you really want vids then DrZzs ones are worth looking at, just remember they're at risk of being outdated, and you won't know 😄
just assume everything is outdated if the video didn't come out that week and cross reference it with the docs
Yeah I am noticing the development send really fast
Even something a few months old can be out of date already
Which is great but also tricky for newbies try to pick it all up I guess
Take it slow - as the saying goes the only way to eat the elephant is one bite at a time
Lol
Banned
lol
🦝
hey, where would I ask for esphome support? : )
On the ESPHome Discord?
The topic of this channel is:
There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that, and #330990055533576204 if it's a question about the HA Blue. If you can't work out which is relevant, start in #general-archived
No politics, religion, or any other obviously contentious topics! Please ensure you've read the Code of Conduct (https://www.home-assistant.io/code_of_conduct/), and #rules.

ESPHome is a system to control your ESP8266/ESP32, with a native integration for Home Assistant.
You can find their documentation here, and get help with ESPHome itself here in the #diy-archived channel (#integrations-archived for the integration). They also have their own Discord server too.

thanks
People build some amazing stuff in Minecraft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIXm-Q-Xa4s
hello, dumb question, can someone outside of the US access https://www.gamestop.com/ ?
No
and the geoblocking is an horible default apache screen
ok, thank's
i'll look somewhere else
Gamestop sucks anyway 😄
They have probably been hit by a cryptvirus since they aren't replying to emails either
pff, i just need US nintendo eshop card ! can't get them anywhere.
Bestbuy and amazon told me to get out ...
will i end up on ebay 😨
No because nintendo, but also no because i need to send it to someone so that we can play together
else i won't bother with US card ;(
you never did this ? you want to play, he don't have the game, you give him so that you can play together ?
I remember I leant my credit card to a wow friend back in 2006, that was probably the first and last time
Other than that, people buy their own stuff 🤷♂️
Never heard of gifts, atx?
Woot full steam ahead

yeah, why don't you RTFM atx

In other news, I mounted these floating shelves today
Looks much nicer than having a bare wall
i'mma knock u out
that window looks like it welcomes people to talk to me while I am cooking
either commit or don't
😂
Those shelves aren't level.
ur not level
no u
I like your place. you cute

For a second, I was wondering how you didn't catch yourself in the reflection.
Then I realised you live in an old ass house with a pass to the kitchen.
built in the late 90s bro lol
😮
previous owners added that
i like the passthrough, it makes this place feel more open
That's an odd design choice for a newer building. Passes are so old-fashioned.
let me know when you take down your xmas decorations so I know when to take mine down
He took them down already. Just had them up extra early for this year.
previous owners added that passthrough @deft pewter
y'all sit on some poor santas lap?
my wife is a literal elf, so the decorations stay up until Feb 1 i've been told
I hope she likes hockey as much as you do
i give her a few slapshots each night

Hockey on ice.. so it's like a Aladdin on ice?
We're lucky if water is in liquid form
lmao
does australia have a olympic hockey team?
based on the temps you've been posting, not surprising
an
does aus have running water?
most of them stay near the ocean in fear of drying out
getting me hot again
100% accurate
my uncle is australian but I haven't seen him in like 15 years. He made these calamari sandwiches one time though that I think about occasionally. They were good.
the cunt put beets on a burger one time else though so that balanced out very quickly
Australians don't really have an easily identifiable cuisine
But our coffee is one of the best in the world
my coffee in my house is all I can drink now
I've been to HK, UK, France, Netherlands, Indonesia and Italy,
and which ones call "gum" "chewy"?
And coffee there ranged from 🤢 to 😐
yeah, coffee everywhere I go is super weak
Paris was probably the worse
mcdonalds has some of the strongest coffee surprisingly, lol
Followed by Amsterdam
Rome was obviously the best. But we do white coffees better than them
Italy seems beautiful. I want to visit rome as well as some of the smaller cities with less tourism jazz
even thought that is what I'd be
It's very poor
yeah, I watch a youtuber that travels and likes to get away from people so you see the less traveled places
nice airbnb for a cheap price, lol
I found Rome very expensive
yeah, outside of Rome, that is
It's more the drivers
I see what you mean
It's like, if a road does a s bend
They'll just drive in a straight line crossing into incoming traffic
https://www.youtube.com/c/HaraldBaldr/search?query=italy Italy is his favorite place so lots of videos there

Just got a beer on buymeacoffee.... thinking about quiting my job 🤔
lol
i mean i could maybe not afford eating a gold-plated steak every day but every second one is enough i guess 🤔
Asking for coffee and getting beer instead could be risky.
Especially when it's only 8am and you're rolling into the office.
As long as it's not Gift (i.e. the German word).
i mean in germany that could be acceptable depending on the beer
We Call it Frühschoppen
I don't think I want brown cheese.
Meine früshtuck bitte
The Google image results for Frühschoppen look good. Beer, sausage and pretzels. Yes, please.
Yeah nah... normally its just beer .. .sadly
thats how it looks :
but like -20years for each person
or - 30
yes... Bavarians to be more specific
yeah thats me lol
Hello everyone. Is there a way to monitor inside nothing detection but that knows the difference between a person a pet?
So far I have only thought of a camera but wouldn’t that invade privacy inside a home?
A camera and image processing would do it but it there another way?
is the pet chipped?
No
no fun
PIR sensors. You'll just need twice as many,.
Buy a set of the ones that claim they don't get tripped by pets... and a set that does get tripped by pets.
You'll know if it's a person or a pet depending on how many trigger 😄
Interesting approach
The only other way I can think of would be to have buttons in each room, maybe 15cm off the floor.
Then you just need to train your pet to press the button when they enter a room.
I think that’s the best solution. I will work on that one
What if he was chipped
How would that help?
My network switch is flashing and is no longer working, bad start to morning :/
I guess that's the risk when buying network kit 2-3 years old
Any of you who are using Atom?
I'm experiencing some problems when editing files on a Git-project, so I have to change focus to another window before the edited file appears in "Unstaged changes"-tab.
I don't think there are a whole lot of people using Atom these days
I forgot about Atom

what's my best bet these days for a home built nas / docker host for running HA, plex and a few other things?
I see some people using FreeNAS and I’m considering doing that to consolidate a few things
truenas now I think
Time to add more intelligence to dumb nest
Any time someone tells me to replace the nest I'mma just point to you and pretend my setup is just as good
are those those sensors drzszszszs had a video on?
it's like the only video of his I have seen
I want to ali express a bunch to future self
mind sending me which listing you used?
I get is shipped from taobao from my shop over there. Are you asking about aliexpress?
ahh, yeah. I assumed
oh well
I snagged a dozen. I meant to order them when I saw the video a long while ago. They would have been here by now maybe
I don't think I trust the Hue temperature sensors so want to redundancy and they don't do humidity
I'm going to automate some stuff for humidity in a bit
I couldn't figure out of it is possible to expose an esphome bang-bang as a humidifier entity integration thingy
Don't use esphome it's all tasmota here
esphome would just have been convenient because I could expose one of my bme280s and then connect it directly to HA with the service calls and then automagic humidity bang-bang
oh well
nvm, just going to use the generic_hygrostat thing that has been chillin' as a PR for a while
Home assistant has a knack for knowing when I'm tired lol
I have kept trying to work on HA for the last few days and my girl keeps wanting to get me drunk
we never even drink, Idk what is going on
all I know is scatman is my doorbell now
lol
Mine decided it wants to be able to be pinged but no other form of connection, so we are fighting right now
I'm about to hook it up to a monitor lol
It'd be nice if the humidifier graph stuff showed you the current humidity as well as the target
nneat though
I haven't used a humidifier with HA
just more motivation to set up grafana stuffs
now I won't have to change the water so often
yay
Oh, just hook up a float valve
lol
Then you'll never have to change the water
yeah, it'd just be OOGLEH
Or do you have an HVAC system?
it is just a tiny humidifier in my bedroom
rental
ah
I am using the humidity sensor built into my boradlink, lol
LMAO my zwave stick was crashing HA. Jerk.
Every time I reboot the system, my dishwasher beeps. Pure coincidence, but I find it funny
wait, humidity sensor in the broadlink chip?
they have a cable that has temp/humidity on it for some reason
I accidentally bought it
interesting
I have some bme's I can use too, Imma test out these broadlinks
Lol go back to my comment... 20 minutes? Thats if your a code writing nerd. I'm not. This world that you live in is faaaar beyond anything I know. And anyone that I know in the real world. ( or i would have asked THEM) just because setting this stuff up is 2nd nature to you doesnt mean its second nature to everyone. In the end I (I might be wrong) just assumed that the discord server was for everyone. People to ask questions etc. Just because the Walmart greeter knows where everything is in the store doesn't mean everyone does... But hey...
Are you trying to make a point against yourself? He said you paid $5 in exchange for not having to spend 20 minutes doing something. If you had to spend more time on it, you're getting better value as an inexperienced user. Yet none of this has to do with wanting support for HA when you buy #cloud-archived. They will gladly help you with #cloud-archived but not HA.
They as in Nabu
Yep he said 20 minutes. Thats if I'm you, a code writing know it all nerd. I'm not. Like I said above. Feel free to read....
Took me 2 days to install it. And I'm being generous to myself. I can barely type. Heaven forbid I ask a question right?
Everyone answers questions all day long, I'm not sure what you mean
Anyways thanks for being so helpful
I'm very confused about what's going on
🐦
@minor mesa what took you two days to install? Nabu Casa?
I will say people on this server can be insanely helpful. Heck @tidal bronze spent hours trying to help me figure out where wires were buried in my walls
@clear ferry I'm lost. What did I miss? Even going back to read the messages, I'm missing something
Someone thinks $5 nabucasa subscription entities them to handholding support through their entire setup 🤷♂️
atx, hold my hand papi
But what setup? Nabu Casa basically holds your hand through it, and if you don't want it, you can do it all anyway, you just have to self host
Through all of the rest of it @chilly nymph
nah, HA support for buying Nabu
But nabu Casa is a different project
You aren't paying the developers of HA. You are paying the maintainers of nabu.
The fact that some of them are the same people is irrelevant. If I work at a hotel and at walmart, I can't rent you a room while I'm at walmart
@night zodiac I'm a code writing nerd? Lol
atx hasn't had coffee yet
papi

I should go to sleep. I figured out all my issues. Between the zwave integration deciding to halt my system and the batteries in my device making it take too long to respond...
Maybe I'm just grumpy.
ZIGBEE
I prefer zwave for switches and for locks
you should just use home alone automations
I mean... If someone wants to break into my house, there's easier ways to do it than tinkering with my locks
Lol

I will say though my top preference for switches is clearconnect
That sounds like an ISP in the 90s
Lutron protocol is called clearconnect
Propitary 🤢
I hear you
Insanely reliable and quick though
And those pico remotes...
Anyway have a good one y'all
the lutron spec

Gotta love checking the balance on your bitcoin wallet after not using it for 4 years...
I think I left like $20 in there, it's now $800
Bitcoin surged up to $40,000 per-coin over the last couple weeks
I still haven't heard a good argument for how cryptocurrency is a good thing

Any new method to add roborock to hassio?
Since hassio isn't a thing, no, but to home assistant? Yes
#integrations-archived will know more
run supervised, you will still most certainly see it is still a thing in the url 😋
One decade ... one decade the HA naming convention will be both consistent and not confusing
In 2340 you say
@forest edge Hass.io was the old name for the appliance like install option, that uses Docker. It is now simply called Home Assistant OS (see #330990055533576204).
Command '.hassio' was invoked by: atxbyea
hassbot is outdated and therefore cannot be used a reliable source
Fake news you say?
typical snow dwarf
Finally some proper winter
And today our thaw started - most of the snow is gone here
-17? Ouch
It got to -7 here overnight recently and that was cold enough. Unusually cold for England.
I thought "proper winter" meant buried under 30ft of snow?
Hoping for -30 @deft pewter
if that is proper winter for your area then global warming really is gonna kill us all lol
Proper winter is when the roads are filled with wrecks and services like the postal service can't operate at all.
Which in England is after about 3 flakes of snow.
or some higher being just wants you to-be-gone
just now catching up on all this drama.gov stuff. crazy world
Yeah, was out in -8 a couple of days back, that was not warm. Suspect it hit -10 overnight...
But you're north of the wall, it's always winter.
I will say this pandemic has ironically cut down the amount of accidents around here due to road conditions being less that ideal
Really? Despite traffic being down, there's just as many accidents here.
I think people see clear roads and think it gives them a free pass to drive like twats.
Yeah, and potentially less "snow plowing" because of fewer moving vehicles
This was even in spring/summer when the roads were dry.
Yeah, the number of total deaths in traffic was down last year actually here
Oh :/
yea by accidents i meant collisions. still was the fair share amount of people who went off the road even noone else was around them lol
We just have the standard winter problem :)
Someone drove into our bridge
😂
Worlds worst transformer
Yeah, one-vehicle accidents haven't dropped. You're almost definitely right about multiple-vehicle accidents.
I don't think deaths will be down by much though. I'm always seeing posts by our local police force announcing the deaths of pedestrians struck by cars... 😦
well this is kind of neat https://www.athom.tech/

I'm glad we only get professional users on this server.
waiting to come across tediores "store" lol
i remember when linus did a review on their ceiling mesh devices before he started linus tech tips
shit was overpriced even back then but still cheaper then they are now
Do you all get sunburnt much
The idea of being out in the sun during the day in summer is just alien to me
@clear ferry what would you suggest is better than unifi APs
at the price
holy crap image seeing this thing looking at you through your bedroom window

I've been very happy with my Linksys mesh stuff in bridge mode, delivers 400Mbps over a 252m2 house and was only $180 for three @hushed basalt
That was the smallest version too, the 1200 or whatever it is
Haven't done a single tweak, plugged one in, bridged it and placed the two others
too poor to afford this fancy mesh stuff you people speak of
just got 3 wired routers with 3 ssids lol
i did that initially a long time ago but our phones at the time wouldn't switch reliably between them as you moved around the house so I did it this way and never switched back
@hushed basalt I have too much fur
That is pretty lame, I've done that for 15+ years before I had mesh, and the failover is less than a ms usually, just adjust your radios to not overlap @forest edge
I see a "Waschbär" I think of michelle
🦝
racoon apparently
I've got a couple of Asus Zen-WiFi units in non-mesh mode (because the mesh mode was a shit show), they work really well
so we only have x amount of channels in the US (there are a few more these days) but back then the only way you couldn't overlap was to have a max of 3
and they don't overlap
but back then devices didn't reliably switch to the strongest signal like they do now
I do WiFi tuning of thousand of aps, it's not magic ,it's just some work
you could on ddwrt, but not all of m,y routers were flashed
The Asus units all support quite a lot of tweaking
always had linksys
When they're in mesh mode you can even get them to punt clients
hell even my "newer" one dosen't allow you to tweak the tx
when you get older you kind of just don't care enough lol
as long as it works
Old like atx? Or just regular old?
atx is young, he jkust looks old cause of his countries poor economy
you know they glued that onto it's hands right?
Any access point I've owned since.... 2004 could adjust tx and rx
I have multiple countries?
Bone apple teeth
they weren't cisco atleast not residential
i have yet to see one that allows you to mess with that
Consumer 🤢
here thats a whole lot of $$$ differences lol
This is why we grab used or get someone else to pay you see
lol used/free. not all of us can swipe shit from work lol
Finally five minutes to install that 10g card in my esx lab
Question: I'm brand new to HA am I better trying to use node red for automations rather than the built in HA method?
Some people like graphical stuff, some people don't
I like things that works.
I like things that work predictably - I prefer things that work reliably though 😄
@clever mortar I love asus units. I was looking at switching to an aimesh system. Reviews have been pretty decent so I'm surprised to hear you say it was no bueno.
Tinkerer is away for 13m 3s with a message :point_right: ☝️ ☝️ 👇 👇 👈 👉 👈 👉 🇧 🇦
Have I bricked my HA? When I try to log in I get this. I've just done an update not sure if this is the reason?
Did the update finish?
One must have finished in order to have done the second though.
Just clicked and left it figuring it would do it in the background
Would it queue them or try and do both and fry itself?
Are you using HassOS? If so let's head there #330990055533576204
they're not even trying at this point
i get them since my mail address was included in a hack a few weeks ago (ledger)
I went to check mine 😂
It's usually "Amazon" saying they put a hold on my account lol
But found an interesting one
The most productive address I have, beyond a really old legacy one, is the one which was included in the Plex hack some years ago. Whoever bought/sold that data really spread it around.
The docusign hack was quite problematic as the data was shortly after the incident used in widespread phishing attacks specifically impersonating docusign.
I don't think mine was leaked unfortunately to get these nice emails
Did get a few in my work email though
"esphome vs node red" is a post title I didn't think I'd ever see
how are those comparable even?
That's my point
It was someone looking for help
I still haven't used node red. I installed it a while ago but haven't spent time on it yet. I need to since everyone says it's so much easier/faster
Ooooh I thought it was whole article by someone
I don't think I'll ever get into it
No, just someone that was confused about which one to use for their hue lights
The answer was basically neither, of course. Unless using node red to automate
Anyone have any recommendations for bulbs for apple HomeKit/HAss?
#hardware-archived will 😉
This is an interesting cover of Country Roads 🤣

If HA isn't quite your cup of tea, what alternatives are there? It can be commercial. Something with support for zwave, zigbee and mqtt would be nice. Does that at all exist? Perhaps this is a non-topic in these channels?
Well I would expect most people hanging in the lounge would be committed HAers
Agreed. Plus commercial could mean quite a few things. The nice thing about HA is it is often interoperable with many of the "commercial" systems.
But when you say commercial, I generally think of things like crestron or control4, rather than smartthings, wink, or hubitat.
Athom Homey Pro costs lots of money, so you would hope it was somewhat useful
I appreciate greatly the number of integrations of HA, but it also comes with a number of "annoyances" (which can range from bugs, unfinishedness and to design decisions). I don't have too much time to invest into tinkering so I'm trying to gauge the pain points and when it's gets to be too much (sunken cost fallacy). I don't believe that the other (commercial) solutions is without faults of it own.
The difference, I suppose, is that having payed for a commercial service, you can unleash the wrath of the displeased consumer if something goes wrong.
But mixing and matching eco-systems will inherently involve tinkering
In my humble opinion
@cinder heart If you think you may have time to tinker later, it's not the worst thing to use something like smartthings or another hub that has HA integrations. Because then in the future, you can transition slowly while still having devices work. A big down side of most bug name solutions is that it is cloud based, so you may lose access to all devices if their servers go down. Like with ST and wink, both of which are notorious for it. But have also been two of the biggest names
That said, wink recently decided to start charging everyone to use their service, with very little notice. So you had the choice of paying or losing access. Which is why a ton of people switched away.
You risk that with any cloud based solution
Eh, I have had... Two major issues in two years
But I never upgrade ha to a .0 release
And I read release notes
I didn't have any major issues with the IKEA hub. It was just woefully inadequate feature-wise vs. where I wanted to go. I would recommend it to friends as a starting point though.
Eep!
I keep forgetting they have a hub
Their devices aren't too bad. I like the remotes.
I love the bulbs
Not a single has failed so far for me
And I have 12 of them outdoors
Their bulbs are ok. I like the lightify ones better, but I HAVE had failed lightify bulbs
The rgbw br30 ones
So one of the doors in my new place was wobbly. I had to take it off the hinges yesterday to move a couch in, and...the door was held in with 1/4" screws. Several of which were stripped.
Who uses screws that short on a door?
Yeah, laser712, that HA is local-focused instead of cloud is an extremely important policy and feature of HA.
Someone who doesn't need to use said door and is looking to get shit done fast & cheap?
How much time and money do you really save in doing so @tepid roost? The price of the screws for a 50 pack was sub $1 for 2.5" screws at home depot yesterday
2.5"? That's overkill 😄
Most hinge fixtures here have 3 screw holes. I'd be happy with 1" screws if there are 6 of them holding the door up.
@deft pewter I agree that it's overkill, but I bought them for a different purpose
And rather than make yet another trip, just use what I have
@cinder heart been in this for a long time. You will have to decide if your goal is extending/remote control or automating. Extending most platforms would work and is good. Automating HA would be a great solution. Is anything perfect? Far from it.
Everyone knows longer is better. Unless you don't have longer.
Problem I ran into is that I wanted to use the wired backhaul, which caused a routing loop... oops 😄
Finally got round to using all those velcro cable tidies I ordered
Thanks for putting them in the wrong order, Discord. Makes it look like the 'after' is worse 🤣
Looks a lot better now. I tend to over do them.
The cable clips I got didn't hold very well, else I could've secure more things out of sight.
Then when I need to add another, spend like 20 minutes redoing it again
But at least now there's nothing trailing on the floor.
My work is getting me one of those sit stand desks so I'm going to need to do it all over again soon
@clever mortar wait why was it creating a routing loop?
The secret is all the double sided 3M pads I ordered:
Attached a power extension, network switch and my NUC to the underside of the desk 👌
Because despite it supposedly handling wired backhaul, it connected to the wired network and then established wifi backhaul (bridge) too
@deft pewter let me tell you about our lord and saviour IKEA, they have a cable bridge which is quite nice
Hey, that's not a bad idea
So, any packet on the network would get duplicated by the Asus
It's gonna take some effort to pull these back off... but that's a problem for future me.
Thankfully I have switches that are smart enough to stop that by cutting off the offender
@deft pewter they make the velcro type too. That's what I assumed you used
I think they just call it hook and loop
Velcro to loop the cables, sticky pads to attach stuff.
@chilly nymph velcro is hook and loop
No I mean they make velcro style command pads
@tidal bronze yes I know, I mean I don't think they license the velcro name
I was hoping to use these to run cables along the underside: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08BC99P9H
But they pop open quite easily...
I'm still surprised how many people don't realize that putting the fuzzy side in when using velcro makes it so much better
Fuzzy side in 👍
@clever mortar I still don't understand why the asus didn't just automatically switch to the wired backhaul and cut off the wifi backhaul
It should have - I'd bet there's a bug in the firmware
Is the model you got compatible with merlin?
No idea, and to be honest I don't really care 😄
They do fast WiFi, I don't need alternative firmware on them
I'd recommend you look into it. Merlin is just the asus firmware with extras, plus fixed security
Noice, a new covid in japan
It's legit based on whatever the latest firmware is at any given time
Yeah, not supported
🍣
Darn
CT-8 ❌
I love the merlin variant. I buy my asus routers based on support
Though TBH when I have time I'm probably going to build a new pfsense box
Found your house on Reddit @clever mortar
Corgarff Castle, Scotland - https://i.redd.it/46jg7vat1ia61.jpg
Hell yeah
a lonely fire and a skirt?
As long as you can get internet, I'd love that place. I don't even need heat.
I'd even take 100 mbps if I had to
damn so you will give up alot uh
heat is a must
When I say heat I do mean a central heat type thing. I'd deal with fire places
Make a man a fire and he'll be warm for a night. Set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life
My wife wanted me to get these face plates for outlets that are also a night light. Because she wanted me to put it on a switch. Apparently I didn't do enough reading because it's not compatible with switches
This really puts a damper on my plans because I had planned on automating this switch as well
dat tilt shift doe
@chilly nymph those plates suck
and they don't work with all outlets
they rely on the side terminals on the outlets to grab their power
I knew how they worked, just assumed the contacts were adjustable. They are not.
So need to find a solution for the bottom of the stairs to the master
good evening!
I am not sure, where to put this question, so i am going to ask you in the lounge a question and where i should ask it😉
I want to automate a servo motor wired to a ESP32 nodeMCU with home assistant.
I had it running already, but i changed my HA from 32 bits to 64 on friday, and since then i always get this "unknown tag !<!lambda> " as a warning in my nodeMCU ESP32 *.yaml file...
Can you guys tell me, in which channel i should ask for help on this topic?
@whole nacelle if you don't know where to ask, best to start in #general-archived
@whole nacelle are you having problems getting the ESP working or getting HomeAssistant to talk to it?
Do you know how to read channel topics? I know it's not straight forward on mobile.
ok! Thanks!!! #general-archived is the way to go! cool! Thank you fro the hint!
@whole nacelle not necssarily 🙂
@last dirge ESPHome seems to be unhappy with that code line, since i changed the HA build
#general-archived is better than #the-water-cooler but probably won't be your ultimate destination
meaning you upgraded and it broke?
if so, you'll want to go to #integrations-archived
Ah, no 😉
@last dirge I wasn't saying it was the right place. Just the best place to not get mauled for asking if you don't know where to go
#integrations-archived would be for the ESPhome integration, not ESPHome itself
ESPHome add-on would be #add-ons-archived
nope, i flashed the 64 bit instead of the 32 bit HA build (running on a raspberry 3 B)
ESPHome code otherwise would be #diy-archived - or their Discord
@clever mortar to be fair, it can be very confusing for someone new to HA and discord, as on mobile, a lot of people don't know topics exist
@clever mortar see!😁 confusing , for a complete noob like me haha
okay, sounds like you've installed the OS
Though if he's using esphome he may not be a newbie I suppose
I'd have said it's not that hidden, but
so you'll want to go to #add-ons-archived like Tinkerer said
i really do not want to disturb you, guys, shall i change the channel for further begging for help? :)
In some of my servers people don't even know there is a user list you can swipe to
@last dirge copy that! thanks!
Best bet if you're having problems with the add-on is the #add-ons-archived channel, but any time you're lost just ask in #general-archived and you'll receive directions (probably)
Thank you guys for your advices! Have a nice Sunday evening! :)
Don't worry @whole nacelle, I'm one of the people who has done exactly what you just did
Though you handled it much better than I did
It is always hard to dive into a new thing and if forums or chat-rooms or similar, where many rules and people are involved, i try to start somewhere in the least pushing way i can.
(and i always keep this nice german idiom from Berlin in mind: 'Wer nich' fracht, kriecht keene Antwort' which more or less translates to 'the one who does not ask a question, will not get an answer')
Thank you again :)
We have a saying like there where I live:
Shy bairns get nowt
Which even to other English speakers probably sounds like nonsense 🤣
I once joked with somebody else that I should write a Scottish to English dictionary
Nae
E's a wee bonnie lass
Dinna muddle the Sassenachs
I remember that stupid poem they used to teach at school. Ends with 'gang aft agley'.
That's not even English at that point.
Ah. Burns. Of course it is.
Trying to just track presence detection if a device's ip connects to my router. Back in the day you could acquire a "known devices" file. What's best method nowadays?
The method is: read the topic, no support questions in #the-water-cooler
Yeah, they broke again
I love when online journalists try to make bold statements:
Part of Phase Four of the MCU, surely the point at which it starts to run out of steam
The MCU is never going to run out of steam.
yay, I woke up and esphome had an update for the problem I was messing with last night, lol
I thought they only removed /r/donaldtrump. Didn't know you were a subscriber.
go to bed with problem, wake up with update, update, try problem, fix, yay
Don Aldrt Ump ?
never knew 'er
Yeah, reddit's screwed: https://downdetector.co.uk/status/reddit/
I bet the rednecks are DDoSing it.
i spent an hour writing a selenium program to get the letsencrypt certificates straight from my router only to find out it has a captcha that shows up sometimes 😐
cloudflare?
Hey, don't bring @forest edge into this
mono, I might make one to link to my video game's state. that'd probably be fun
Don't some already exist for that? I know you can tell for Steam.
I have actually done it bbefore without the HA involved but having a service would be fun
the game I play has a whole state API built in for it for tournaments
Ah, nice. Which game? Tetris?
you give it an endpoint and it spams http calls

@scenic radish
