It's not meant to be impressive, it's meant to be the nutrient slurry from the first Matrix movie ๐
whatever that is
"You know what it reminds me of? Tasty Wheat. Did you ever have Tasty Wheat?"
โค๏ธ that movie, lol
this is impressive
Oh, I can and have cooked that
You're short a sourdough dinner roll with a heap of irish butter, though
Gotta have something for all the gravy left on the plate when you're done ๐
croquettes
Did chicken tikka masala for dinner last night, and tonight it's gonna be homemade clam chowder :3
If nothing else, the pandemic has definitely given me an opportunity to practice cooking
I need to take another crack at homemade fish and chips, hmm...
Future home for digi quad and ws2812B 5v led Rgb strip
@subtle pasture practice? Hopefully the test subject is only you.
@dull chasm you gotta come up with something other than pale beans, watered down gravy and canned meat. The mushrooms looks like it needs 2 shots of B12 to wake up.
How can you eat that more than twice/year
that is good ole food ....not canned meat ...straight from cow ...butcher to stove
@forest edge you went all out huh ?
@tidal bronze if I was 30 years younger, that would be me lol
GEtting myself a rpi 4
Gonna redo my HASS setup this week ๐
First thing -- i'm gonna see if i can get HASS to boot from a usb hdd cuz i am done with microsd failures lol
Not sure if this is great to ask here. Anyone know an alternative to wyze lock? One that goes over the lock and doesn't replace?
Last decoration before the cancer. Not done lights after that https://youtu.be/BvMUclHvVow
Started to snow so thought it was nice with a more "christmasy" video of my handmade pixel light show.
nothing wrong with going all out
You done with your lights?
@rapid tendon I made the move to a SATA SSD (USB adapter) on a Pi3. It was a massive upgrade, even with the 3 being limited to USB 2.0
are we sharing our lights? lol

@forest edge when do you sleep ? ๐คฃ
@tidal bronze when Vasiley's cows come home
Lol. Online 24/7. Thank you for keeping the glow plugs alive for HA discord server.
not even sure what to say to that lol
Gotta find candles for Halloween
overload the circuit breaker with speakers that you can't run lights as well? lol
Green Halloween
my sensors are on the way
"Departed: Among enemies of the facility in the machining center"
amongst... enemies...
don't worry, whatever they are suppose to sense you can be damn sure getting that info to you is the devices least priority
๐ง
Back to the depths of Hell which you came demon! @clear ferry
Just finished watching all The Boys episodes and saw that part
It finally makes sense you say
Good morning! Anyone here experienced with 3d printing and/or modelling? I'm working on transforming my bed into a giant scale for presence detection, but I'm a bit stuck designing holders for the load cells under my bed. I'd like to bounce a few ideas off of someone.
A lot of us dabble with 3d printing, a lot of other people have made load sensors for their beds
I've indeed seen that. Lots of projects on the forums. I have copied some designs, edited them to my needs and printed them. But they don't really fit my bed. My bed doesn't have legs, but rests on two boards at the head and foot of the bed. So mounting the load cells is a bit difficult.
So I'm trying to come up with a smart way of fixing the load cells that will fix them in a specific position to prevent drift of the measured values.
This is what I have so far: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4614359
But they shift.
no idea for you, I have no need to measure load on bed as I can measure if someone is in bed by 3 other factors
How about PIR aimed at the bed?
that sounds.... not useful at all ๐คฃ
Each time there's movement, put smooth love making music on ;)
That could work. But I have already soldered a NodeMCU a breakout board with all the connections and such.
:)
Hey, I'm trying to improve the WAF, not obliterate it! ๐
can you not make a center post that wouldn't be load bearing but would detect if someone was in the bed
if it's only being supported at the ends I can assure you the middle moves some lol
This is my bed by the way.
for me it would be easy to see, a) is tv on ? we are in bed and awake, b) are the bedside lights on ? we are in bed and awake, c) is both our phones charging and lights are off ? we are asleep d) is my CPAP drawing power? I'm asleep, e) is my wifes phone charging, house lights are off and bedside lamps are off, she is sleeping
logics without measuring the damn bed
crap drawing power? how is that not always tick True?
I'm already at this stage, so I'd like to go through with this method.
Wires are all soldered. I thought I had everything finished, but then noticed that the load cell holders didn't really work as intended.
I think Sonoma's suggestion is valid
On the way to the office.. the public transport is anything then fast today. 1 hour into the ride and not yet even halfway through. The ride takes on regular days about 50 mins. And to top things of the battery on my new laptop is flat dead. I don't like this day so far.
@hearty depot public transport ๐คข
Yea.. just like public postal service :P
damn vienna post service
Vienna is different
I'm not even allowed in the office one day a month
@hearty depot could be worse.. https://youtu.be/tfvwUlCQvkE
?? Is this a French movie. I got more questions after watching.
I've been in the office three times since march
You guys still have offices?
About two weeks ago, we had a company-wide briefing talking about how they plan to open up our offices gradually. First office was going to be the one in Poland, then their cases spiked. UK wasn't going to be far behind, now the government is saying to stay home if you can ๐คฃ
I honestly don't think I'll see my office until at least March next year. 12 months of remote working... and they still won't embrace it because they think people need to be face-to-face to get shit done.
Eh, We have offices, but I have asked to be classified as a edge worker for years, might happen this year
and I'll get yearly stipends to fill my home office with shit
What's an edge worker? Flexible working conditions?
Home office, no designated desk in the office
Edge worker
A person that mainly works with Microsoft Edge
I'd love for my management to allow permanent home working (software engineering can be done from anywhere, after all)... but there's one person in particular that wants us in the office and he has more say than I do ๐ฆ
Before Covid I was in the office... once a month
but that was only to show face while I was in 50% paternity leave
It's funny. The longer this goes on, the better we're proving that offices aren't needed for our work... but they're so friggin stubborn.
me too, which is why I enjoy sleeping in datacenters
I'll talk to them to get shit done but mostly I just want to concentrate.
I get nothing done while in the office
before covid I had 1-2 flights per week for a few months
that was pretty nice actually
but 2 flights per month would be a max for me for most of the year tbh
you can get 3 tp link smart plugs on amazon for 20 bucks, 4 for 26 bucks. granted they don't do power monitoring and lately some people have had issues with them in HA but that's still a decent deal lol
is 2 16ft strips of ws2811 for 31 bucks a good deal?
sanwo, can't even tell what controller it uses
app based \ cloud based hardware ๐คข
๐คข
sounds like you bought an apple users wet dream
zigbee master race
I use Tradfri for most of my bulbs because I only need CT, and they are great at that
the RGB tradfri is... eeeeh
even then it is mostly for 13 year old hormone infused boys who jack off to their AMD cpu
these are zigbee i think https://www.amazon.com/Sengled-Daylight-Equivalent-Assistant-SmartThings/dp/B078HHWQWG/
Never tried sengled
something about the color or brightness?
I'm very happy with tradfri for most, and I use hue in the bedroom because they are actually 10% dimmer than the tradfris roughly, and I use gledopto for strips
I remember some hjack off youtuber comparing a bunch of bulbs and sengled was one of them
I feel ceiling arrays are too much light tbh
only houses I see them in here are the mid to late 90 houses, that have been painted white with countour walls
#basicbitch style
#pumpkinspicelatte @forest edge
For me now, unless the light can do both CT and brightness, I'm really not interested
the Circandian lighting stuff really works
No idea, don't do smart switches nor lutron
Makes sense with light arrays
but again, don't have those
Oh, I thought you meant this
personally I think something like shelly or sonoff is better than a smart light switch
you get to pick your style of switch and can still use it if you decide to remove the shelly etc lol
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
what hub?
someone mentioned something about a docker container with a software for "dropping" data in like fast sharing isos etc
what the heck was the name of that container
oh if your going all "no effort" your better off sticking with the garbage these companies stick you with lol
a pi
stable ?
๐คข
shitty storage subsystem, and very sensitive power subsystem
but I'm from enterprise hardware, I have some standards
@clear ferry so you think this is shit? https://www.amazon.com/Chasing-Waterproof-Flexible-Lighting-Changing-Adhesive/dp/B07MGRHXN1
app controled dosen't mean shit as long as it's wifi and not bt
๐คข
Stable is trivial with a few thousand entities
SD cards fail
That's not if, that's when
Industrial cards will last a long time, dashcam/DVR cards will last years
That doesn't help
That just means you'll probably get 1+ years
How many what?
๐คท
pi + usb ssd/hdd
SD cards, other than industrial/high wear will last between 1 month and 2 years, give or take a year or so
NUC, old laptop, any "proper" computer running off an SSD/spinning rust will be way better than a Pi
|| even though a rpi3 is faster than the bus sized relic in atx's garage ||
I run mine on an old laptop - silent, low power, lots of grunt, and a built in UPS ๐
an rpi is fine
High power systems using lots of power is a myth
Americans and their energy usage, if only computers could run on gas
well they kinda can..
That's peanuts
They can but usually for very short bursts, and as a result will often average out at a lower overall power usage
My house idles at 5000w
My Xeon server idles under 40W - you just need to move with the times ๐
My laptop draws well under 40W, given it's got a 40W PSU
That ain't bad, a 12 year old dual Xeon with disks will idle at 120w last k checked
A Pi with HA just controlling some lamps, possibly a few motion sensors, should be entirely stable, eh?
recommending a nuc to this statement is absolutely insane imo
I cheat @clear ferry - it's a low power Xeon ๐ Peaks at 25W ๐
To be fair though, a Pi4 with an SSD won't be a bad choice
the ideal depends on what your planning
Also, you can migrate ๐
I started on a Pi3, I'm now on an old laptop, migration was trivial
an rpi3 will handle your few lights and motion sensors without breaking a sweat
Mine handled a few hundred automations and a thousand or so entities without breaking sweat ๐
Just the storage was ... s l o w
I'd still not go back from my laptop though ๐
Cameras without motion/object detection is fine
Even then, you can do the motion/object detection outside of HA
(I do)
well when you get into cameras then you may wanna consider moving away from pi
Still want not Pi for that
rpi4 can handle motion detection etc just fine on a few cameras
but again, if you plan to expand past like 5 cameras.. an rpi is not for you
or if you plan to do doods or whatever
personally i think rpi's are awesome especially for starting out. they are cheaper than other options, they themselves can be used for other things if you ever need to upgrade beyond it etc
an rpi2 is probably faster than any pc atx owns
no idea wtf your asking lol
No, if you want multiple things then #330990055533576204 isn't a good choice
Unless those things are handled by #add-ons-archived
No, for most folks that's #449717345808547842
(aka Docker)
Unless you're actually really at home on Linux, compiling packages from source, troubleshooting build issues...
os it is then lol
Then stay away from #330944238910963714 or #551864459891703809 - use either #330990055533576204 (probably your best choice) or #449717345808547842 (in a pinch)
Same as HA not in docker ๐
It's HA, however you run it
๐คท
There's no magic load calculator since every install is different
๐คท
"not much, maybe"
It comes down to:
- How often the sensors report in
- What automations you have
- What other integrations you're using
You could easily max out a Pi3, or run it on a Pi0 without noticing, depending on your setup
Probably not much load
pretty sure any hub could handle that (if they could run HA)
You start out with just one step really
yes
That's why we've got documented #integrations-archived ๐
Install HA, hook up a device tracker, or a weather integration, and maybe a notification, and start playing
You can do a lot without buying anything
My Pi3 floated between 25% and 50%, but I did abuse it ๐
mine idles around 40+% but then I got a lot of crap lol
My i5 floats around 10%, but spikes to 40% or above regularly ๐
you also do image processing and not just motion
Smart doesn't save energy...
you overthink too much lol
if all you want is the lights to turn on before you get home m-f you can do that without HA etc, many simple things can be handled by the devices themselves. people who want to do more complex things while having one thing to control multiple brands locally is what HA does best for them
a smart switch can do that without ha
i am sure there is atleast one out there
Imagine if you followed the server rules ๐ค

start simple, get a smart switch, or a smart plug or a smart light and play with it, see what uses you could have for it and if you have use for more.. go from there. one step at a time. don't even worry about brand but you can always look at https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/ if you want to see what will work with something like HA down the road
I started with no devices. HA, a device tracker, weather integrations, and a notifier
You probably want either #zigbee-archived or #zwave-archived
nah, I still expect you to ask here for now

Wait , you can't just plug in any cable in any port?
Is that why it set on fire?
If you can't just plg in any cable, why do they all have the same socket....
/s btw
You should try the DEC 10 pin serial cable
Many have tried plugging that into an ethernet port

hi everyone, new here, joined to seek advice from wise people ๐
please help me, in which channel should I post some quiestion regarding a simple wake_on_lan instance?
sounds like #integrations-archived ๐
Hello to all, just joined and wanted to say hi. Looking forward to learn ๐
If you haven't found the official docs already, you'll get a lot of knowledge from there ๐
people read docs ?
only when in trouble
Pretty sure most don't even then ๐
To be honest, I tend to trust more forums than documentation in most of the cases xD
Given the pace of change in HA, that'd be very dangerous ๐
Forum posts from a month ago may lead you astray... never mind those from a year, or two, or more, ago
yes, in the last few weeks it has been crazy... Incredible speed
I've been running HA for more than one year, but 115 and 116 felt unusual fast for me...
I guess it means I am getting older xD
Back in my day we had to wait for the quartley issue of the PC magazine to come out with a new CD-ROM on the cover to get updates
Ah, I remember that new fangled tech
Good thing I didn't put all my money into Zip Drives
Not that I had any money then
I had one of those, no click of death thankfully, worked well enough
Not as good a backup destination as my DAT3 stacker setup though ๐
๐คข
Zip was a big upgrade over floppy disks ๐
Backup is one of those things I'm happy to pay someone for the service
Give me an API and an endpoint,
Tape libraries, managing spanned tapes, storage, cataloging, upgrading old archives ๐คข
Cloud backup is fine, but in addition to local ๐
Why not cut out the middle man and put everything in the cloud
I run home assistant on drop box
As long as I keep it under 2GB it's all fine
Can't believe Dropbox still only have 2GB free tier,

what you guys think about this
The SmartiPi Touch 2ย is a Pi 4 compatible case that is perfect for use with the official 7" Touchscreen Display.ย It offersย various front-pieces for adding LEGO brick compatibility, and even a fan and mount! The 7" Display is secured into the case with four screws, and your Ra...
a touch screen case to load home assistant on.
kind of overkill and stupid, but could be nice?
Well, if you run #330990055533576204 it's utterly pointless
Now, if you used that on another Pi, maybe not
nods but im sure we could put a screensaver on it for added cool points.
Not on #330990055533576204
xD
aw ๐ฆ
i just want a wall mounted one that looks industrial. to make it look like its a part of the burglary panel.
You can do that, on another Pi, that doesn't run HA
sure you could through building an addon
I wonder if that'd have access to the hosts's video output though
Personally, I just use Google Home Hubs for when I want a display... which is almost never
doubt it, if you can access usb etc then everything should be accessible
meh i think it'd be cool to have stats on an LCD with it
but if its not possible, im not gonna worry about it
be alot of work for something i doubt you would look at much at all lol
cool factor and show off factor mainly ๐
the case i posted a pic of, doesnt look like its for the pi 4
-_-
i want a magic mirror
The answer looks to be with X, which likely again makes it hard
not sure why its so god damn hard to find one.
makes more sense to me
flirc, if you want to mount it on wall use double sided tape.. done
Using a Pi4 for a wall mounted display is wasteful
You'd probably be fine with a Zero
yeah because double sided tape doesnt look cheap or tacky at all ๐
you don't see it?
^
I actually have push pins holding my rpi4 to the wall atm lol
I wonder if that'd have access to the hosts's video output though
@clever mortar The add-on developer can request that access
oooh
i think i found one
Online Shopping at Banggood.com๏ผ
just sucks its only available from china
What's up. New to HASS here. Currently running hassos on my rpi4.
you get a case for that rpi4?
Nope, just got it a few days ago. I need to get one and a fan
ooooo
stupid expensive...
but battery backup
๐ค ๐ค ๐ค
Lol that's overkill ๐ ๐
what is this? a shopping cart?
.....
what is "overkill"? i do not know what this word means? is this some sort of peasant talk?
lololz jk jk
$95+ is pretty steep
but damn it looks so sexy
i mean right now my homeassistant is running on a hyper-V VM with intel xeon 6 cores 12 threads, i dont have it doing jack because i was seeing if the OS would just kill itself or not. havent really dived too deep with it. but i dont like the idea of HA being on Hyper-V
i just foresee hyper V having epic fail because microsoft reasons.
hyper v ๐คข ๐คฎ
^exactly
I never liked hyper v. I use vbox when I need to.
i was toying with it. surprisingly enough hyper-v hasnt killed it for no reason.
unlike other hyper-v sessions ive made.
๐คทโโ๏ธ
but i still dont trust hyper-v with HA
I don't trust hyper-v.
i would rather go with the Pi route
and having a battery backup on it would be an interesting route to go.
overkill, yes. but oh so cool
For battery backup, wouldn't a portable battery pack for phones that Supports passive charging work?
LOTS of great ideas lately in this channel
And Microsoft should just put hyper v out of its misery once and for all
@clear ferry I see you all hired Michael Bay to install your outdoor cameras. https://youtu.be/c4kpeZHcke8
now I get all norway recommended on youtube, thanks @forest edge
@civic tangle passive charging you mean it can power things and charge at the same time?
Yes. And it's passthrough charging. My bad.
Aha, fair enough!
Do you have other emotes?
Not since the facist rule decided against it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQ3oJlt4GrI
badtelco has new devices for christmas
i think i found my winner.
silverstone PI02
wall mountable, black, metal,
can put a wifi antenna on it if i want to. not sure if i will though.
doesn't matter, you run hyperv
That's pretty smart
I'm thinking about this one https://www.amazon.com/Argon-Raspberry-Aluminum-Heatsink-Supports/dp/B07WP8WC3V/
And maybe this for battery backup https://www.ravpower.com/products/rp-pb19-16750mah-power-bank?variant=31149726728267
just rename this channel to shopping cart now please
Or we can make a channel dedicated to this purpose. I thought lounge meant we can post what we want lol
not if you want to run HA on it
@clear ferry I'm probably going to have to move to Hyper-V on my HP Gen8 servers, since ESXi support stopped at 6.5
The latest version of Hyper-V will run on a potato with drivers from 2006 if you need it to, so it's a great way to keep old hardware alive.
ESXi 6.5 is still getting security updates for a while, so I haven't made the jump yet... but it's coming...
Aside from the hardware support, my backup solution (Veeam) works with both ESXi and Hyper-V, so I won't have to swap backup solutions or lose access to my old backup chains
Veeam is pretty good at least
@subtle pasture well yes, if you require support, but if you require support on almost 9 year old servers, we have bigger problems tbh
guess they won't turn it off soon, afaik wsl runs on it. then again, wsl is nothing different from any other vm
@clear ferry thats where the disconnect can be
burglar alarms have support for panels into the decades.
computer stuff usually cycles out in 4 years.
HA is kinda in the middle of those 2 technologies
God i love arbys.
i could die a happy man having 1 meal of arbys a day
If you are using ha as your primary alarm, you have bigger problems
why would you use HA as an alarm system?
https://media.tenor.com/images/9595703c188987821d0b2e7bbb4bf233/tenor.gif
@clear ferry right back at ya.
trying to shoehorn burglar alarm functionality into a system that is not focused on intrusion, just seems like a stretch.
@clear ferry Talking about my homelab, so the servers being on the older side is kinda expected...
Then just upgrade
Gonna pay for that?
It'll run 6.7 fine
Nope
Same license
Tried it
I've run 6.7 and 7 on g7s and Gen8s
Hardware monitoring goes tits-up if I upgrade from 6.5 to 6.7 on this hardware
Can't get correct readings on RAID controller status, fans, drive bays, etc.
but does it still run?
Which causes vCenter to throw a hissy fit because it sees the host as degraded, and HA/DRS starts migrating VMs off
it runs, but only if you then disable all HA and DRS...
Yeah, no... no hardware monitoring is not "fine"
I absolutely want to know when I have a bad drive or a bad fan, or an overheat condition
If I upgrade to 6.7, I lose all that
nods definitely a priority
And 6.5 is still getting security updates, so it's still viable for the moment
Not seen any of those issues anywhere else tbh
I've seen it on every HP Gen8 server I've tried to run 6.7 on
6.5 and 6.7 both die in a year though
These are HP DL380 Gen8's, for reference
The only thing that works right is the HP Customized 6.5 ISO + hotfixes
Have you tried running the vanilla image without the ams ?
Yeah, the vanilla 6.7 image will boot, but with no hardware monitoring
Interesting, I'll need to bring my g7 back from death to try
and installing the HP add-ins on top of vanilla 6.7 results in a purple screen of death
Hah, a G7? It's hard enough to get those to boot into 6.5
You have to remove some VIBs from the 6.5 ISO to get it to work without boot-looping
That must have been fun. I had a hell of a time getting the G7 servers at work to boot 6.5
No problems ever
Wound up using VMWare's ESXi ISO builder to create a totally custom ISO
Because the HP customized 6.5 ISO = bootloop, and the vanilla ISO = no hardware monitoring
Irรธ ran the hpe image
And it's a well known issue with 6.5 on Gen7 servers...
Like, there are multiple guides on how to work around it
So I really dunno how you didn't run into it
There was bootloop issues at some point because of the Intel monitoring driver I believe, which was rectified
I probably know of.... 150+ g7 servers running 6.5
But yeah, 6.5 and 6.7 support both die in a year. At that point I'll just use Veeam to chuck everything over to Hyper-V
Make the sick face all you want, it actually supports the hardware and will remain current for a long time to come ๐
And it's not Proxmox, so it has that going for it
Anyway, off to drop off my ballot and get some lunch. Back in a few
@subtle pasture yes in 22 ๐
Heh, I actually went with "no" on that one...
Yes sounded like it gave uber drivers the shit end of the stick, by not making them employees, allowing uber to continue to withhold benefits

have you try the distro build for the pinephone @dusky plank ? they might have better builing block for touchscreen based device
@civic tangle , just curious. Can you plug the pi usb power cable into that phone charger and run two pi with basically a battery backup if power goes out? Basically just plug the phone charger in to power so it is charging all the time?
i hope the charge circuit is build for passthrough, or it might be a ballon before to long ๐
I don't think you can use 2 pis at the same time because it might use too much power. I haven't tried that particular one, but it's supposed to support passthrough charging so yes, you can leave it plugged in and it will act like a backup battery. The important thing to look for if you use a battery pack is passthrough charging support.
Back to the future did 4k restoration the right way by adding atmos ๐
that is impressive ... and worrysome.
extracting eatch sound from the stereo track and putting them in 3D space is a very tedious work.
when done right its awesome
isn't is the first atmos that old ?
but its better than keeping the original track which exists
i will have to try
naw lots have converted already
you dont always see the 3d audio treatment usually its just video
oh, in my mind atmos is an audio tech ... so i what thinking about audio only
dolby atmos is for audio
but i was saying usually when you see a 4k restoration sometimes they do the audio too and sometimes not
most of the good ones do both but not always
like Pitch Black....wouldve been pretty cool in atmos IMO
oh i get it :)
i'm still hook to my 1080P tv ... active 3D, a dead breed
i really don't want to loose 3D, especialy now that nvidia make my 3dvison2 kit paperweight ... i have most of my movies in 3d that would be a shame :(
i've watch all the recent disney in 3D, they are breathtaking.
i've see some of them in 4h HDR, way better colors but i really miss the depth in the landscape
i am hopping it might come back ... someday
well, i've done it. Created a fake, MQTT AC thermostat that forwards commands from a single device in Alexa to the specific AC unit the room you're currently in ๐
all that just so i can say "turn the AC on" instead of "turn the thermostat on"
now you use normal word !
Alexa/google home/homekit are missing a lot of flexibility ...

i still have planed to enable that hue emulation integration to controle stuff from a spot i have and my harmony remote ... But it feel like a pain to setup ...
its painless @fiery sorrel
all you do is enable the integration
go to harmony
tell it to add a hue hub
when it says press the button
you sit and wait patiently for it to do its thing
it can take a few minutes on that screen
then once it connects youll get a list of devices that are added
but if you need more help #integrations-archived ๐
didn't i read about needing a round first gen hue bridge in order to avoid cloud based com ?
I think i will get more issue because my nework is ... complicated. Making wlan comunicate with Lan is very hard.
Anyway, it's bedtime. :)
I just finished setting up popos now, will try pinephone sometime later, maybe never ๐
emulatedhue is easy, can confirm
@fiery sorrel Nah, you don't need a hue bridge to use emulated hue
You do need an older Amazon Echo, though
The 3rd gen and newer Echos won't find devices presented by Emulated Hue
ah didnt know you needed an older echo to use with alexa intereting
i only use it with harmony for the remote buttons and touchscreen control
Yeah, I believe it's because it emulates a Gen1 Hue Hub, and Amazon dropped support for the Gen1 Hue Hub in later versions of the Echo product line
@subtle pasture if I miss out on uber eats I know who to blame.
Yikes :/
lol i doubt itll come to that....lots of those people want benefits actually
@shy comet That was my thinking. I have several friends who've driven for Uber and Lyft, so I've heard plenty about how much it sucks to be considered a contractor rather than an employee
yea thers 2 crowds to consider....primary job and secondary job
I doubt uber/lyft will go for this, risk of entire market wanting it.
I droped ifttt after their bullshit
each accessory maker pays them to have them on their box
now they want money from the users
@shy comet have you ordered UE or uber lately?
instacart and postmates usually @tidal bronze
I guess 50% less drivers. 2 to 3 min up to 15 to 17 minutes.
yea but does that take scheduling into account?
I mean just on uber. UE is worse unless you go priority
Never waited 15 minutes for a ride in LA ๐
haha
I guess it was more due to unemployment
i dont get the uber/whoever deal .....a employee is scheduled to work for so many hours a day ...isnt a uber driver allow to work on his schedule
plenty of contractors hire contract workers for a work provided type thing
Ok hear me out: a contact sensor in the mailbox
So you know when the mail is in and/or a ups or Amazon package. Or if itโs opened at an unusual time
with a sentry gun aimed at mailbox for those unusual times
lol i got a contact sensor in the mailbox ๐
sentry gun too?
dang ....boring
Lol
I was thinking of a SmartThings multi sensor. Then I can put it in the back and not have it in your face, or in the way
It can sense vibrations
McGrauth ...says take a bite out of crime .... i bet if sentry guns where deployed ....burglary's rape ....would drop to zero
You... have a lot of that going on near your mailbox, do you?
yard signs have become such an issue around here there are daily posts. won't be long now till people start booby trapping them so that should get interesting
@subtle pasture not at all ....but alot of people do ..... the point is the dumbass thinking of doing something would think twice
@forest edge Already happened. Someone had their yard signs stolen, and mysteriously returned a few days later... with razor blades taped to them...
City maintenance worker sliced their hand open trying to remove them (they were too close to a roadway)
yea i saw that
find guy that did that and castrate
Says the person talking about booby trapping mailboxes with sentry guns ๐
yep .... nevery had no dumbass walk on my property and try something ... i dont think they would tbh
you would probably landmine your yard if it were legal lol
plus booby traping implies for the unexpected .....if he steals ....not unexpected
no just attack geese ...best watchdogs ever
You can't legally booby trap a mailbox, there's actually a lot of law about this...
Like, you can't even attach it to the ground too securely
don't most go in concrete?
i know the law very well ...part of my occupation ...but ....
A literal sentry gun that blows someone's face off if they open the door is gonna get you arrested, not the mail thief
Like, you can't even attach it to the ground too securely
@subtle pasture maybe in cali.. i could see a ridiculous law like that there lol
Nope, mail is federal law
@forest edge It prevents mailboxes from killing drivers if they happen to run into one...
half the ones here are incased in concrete
no federal law requires that they break away ....for example a wooden post can be concrete as long as the post can break ...a iron pipe concreted cant so ..illeagal
yeah, it was typical in Georgia to have mailboxes in little brick houses ๐
i guess it could break if i semi hit one, but a car certianly would have a bad day lol
but @subtle pasture we have extremme laws for protection of land property and saftey ....
we used to call them "crypts"
a 4x4 post is not hard to break
Don't piss off the postal police, they have nothing better to do ๐
legal if speed are below 25 i think but not on a rural road of 35 or better
farm mailbox I eventually took down but I had that thing nested inside one of those old steel milk jugs attached to a 6x6 in the ground because mailbox smashing use to be such a problem
yea same here ....depends on local department of transpation ....they are usually the ones to enforce
urks me half my town is the mailboxes attached next to the front door and the other half is at the street. and I got the street one.. I mean I want to be more lazy than that damnit
lol ....post lady would be pissed ...would take here 5 minutes to drive from street to house
nah they won't deliever to door if the area is sanctioned for street mailboxes lol
then get something stuck midway.. no thanks lol
That's why items in those tubes travel in canisters...
yea I could see a mail person taking that time like one does at a bank
Just saying, they generally don't have issues with things getting stuck
Round canister through a round pipe with a decent amount of air pressure behind it
@forest edge why are you against mail that comes with a sound?
@tidal bronze what?
shwoop
like vegans.. that's a cali thing
At least some excitement is better than nothing around the barn.
excitement is in the eye on the beholder. we see cold beer and attractive women as you see speakers and vinyl records
I like all 4 of the things listed >_>
Not supposed to? O.o
nope
Darn, I already have the beer, girlfriend, stack of records, and hifi system...
gotta lose one
Not happening, lol
all of them cost too much ....hope you get paid well ....and eat cheap ๐คฃ
We both work tech jobs and have no kids, we're doing just fine ๐ค
And actually saving a ton of money since COVID forced everyone to start working from home... You don't realize how much you spend on gas, lunches, tires, etc.
Oh, and tailoring. Meeting office dress code sucks...
tech and dress code in the same sentence?
i have a goverment vehicle ....have not paid gas for years
@static schooner They demand "business casual"... and I'm convinced they don't know what that term means, because they require a button-up blouse and slacks at minimum
You can get away wtih a polo shirt on casual fridays...
i know i hate that
Try being a 6' 1" woman, lol. It's next to impossible to find blouses and slacks that fit without tailoring
cubical work ๐คข
@forest edge see no blue shirt and blue jeans.
@forest edge Oh, no, I have my own office
Which I haven't been to in over 6 months, lol
@tidal bronze not my fault the rest of the country dosen't know what comfort is
there's an expectation for folks who are customer/vendor focused, but even then there some folks are just known for the t-shirt/jeans treatment at all times
If I had my way, I'd show up to work every day in band t-shirts and blue jeans, maybe throw on an open flannel over top (because the office is always freezing for no reason)
the most "dressed" up i ever got for a job was wearing a polo shirt with jeans lol
I've worn a suit when I had to speak at a conference and was overdressed. won't make that mistake again
@static schooner Yeaaah, I'm not customer facing... not usually, anyway
jeans, button-down shirt, maybe a jacket if I'm on travel
@forest edge so stone washed ripped jeans and pink distressed polo?
couldn't be ripped jeans lol
Distressed jeans are in right now... I have a pair that are double-walled so that they can be "ripped" intentionally
lol
@forest edge overalls aint so bad
The rips won't get any larger because they're stitched down to the second layer of fabric, lol
@dull chasm tell me about it, I never actually wore jean overalls before lol
@dull chasm almost bed time for you and you start posting MA rated stuff ๐ค
I don't think I've worn overalls since I was, like, 4...
@tidal bronze thats a genuie picture advertisment for overalls
i havent had an office to work in for years lol...company closed down the LA office and let us work remote....although sometimes i work EST hours ๐ฌ
Still too mature content for you @dull chasm
LOL i hear ya ...it is bedtime about to fall asleep
I wear coveralls sometimes in the winter when I shovel or have to trek out into a fields or something. closet thing to overalls I ever get lol
bedtime ? shit about to start dinner lol
dinner here too lol
MSFT just announced that most folks don't need to come back, and can relocate if they want
were so spoiled wit these delivery services lol
Yup, just about to start dinner here as well. Clam Chowder tonight
yea were all over teh place tonight...fish and veggies for adults and mac n cheese for my son
@dull chasm if quad ever visited you and had to eat real food he would return home like 100lbs overweight lol
You mean that gravy stuff ?
yep .....and his local rabbits would get to eat for once
I can cut down on workouts for sure.
I think it's going to be pork with crab meat bao tonight.
@shy comet fish ? ๐
is Californian, not vegan
My girlfriend can't do gluten though, so I guess I have proximity to at least one stereotype
Learning how to make gluten free bread has been an adventure, to be sure
Takes like twice as long to rise as normal dough
@tidal bronze salmon...had poke on saturday otherwise it woudlve been that lol
poke ๐
I can't do any fish other then shell fish.
Oh boy.
preps the beer batter
here we are complaining about 50 minutes when in march we were lucky to get same day ๐
man that was horrible...having to wake up early to put a food order in
fish chat
these late night talk shows without audience laughter seems so pitiful
Lol
Might be better with a laugh track, and I hate laugh tracks
im surprised we havent seen a rise in animation yet
takes a long time for things to catch up
A man's terrifying encounter with a cougar on a hiking trail in Utah has gone viral after he managed to record a six-minute video of the incident.
Full story: https://abc7.com/pets-animals/viral-video-shows-cougar-stalking-utah-hiker/6975946/
damn west coasters.. gotta wait till 2am to see the prime day deals all because their veggie ass time zone lol
Got my hdd imaged in prep for the new pi ๐
@forest edge I think the only host who's adapted to the new format well is Trevor Noah
John Oliver and Colbert just feel weird now
don't think i seen more then a few seconds of his, I can't really watch any of them because that joke > awkward silence is just creepy
surprised they didn't get more creative with the audience situation since they could have done something using zoom or something lol
filmed in front of a live studio audience
wtf amazon sells motor oil? as in amazon basics lol
omg they got a ton of automotive crap under their brand
so far the deals have been kind of trash but haven't made it too far in. These are a great price tho. I been using the non zwave versions since they came out with them 15+ years? never had a single issue they work great https://www.amazon.com/First-Alert-Detector-Carbon-Monoxide/dp/B00KMHXFAI/ good deal for anyone wanting the zwave, the non is same price too
these old thermostats being "on sale" and still costing like 80 bucks is confusing me. these things are like 20 years old and you can buy them from lowes for like 30 bucks if that
@clear ferry want me to get ya something so you can brag to your fellow Norwegians you have something manufactured from this actual decade?
@clear ferry you sure, could get you an upgrade gpu https://www.amazon.com/PNY-NVIDIA-GeForce-Profile-PCI-Express/dp/B01M8HZFNE lmao
@clear ferry it was a DDOS, other eastern europe banks were also affected
So filling too
nice, I ordered a 350w 5v psu... 15 days ago
and it arrived today
go go china
70A should suffice for some of my outdoor lights ๐คฃ
What are those, lights for ants ๐
reminds me of the 20,000w lamp by photonicinduction
also interesting for mildly exaggerated outdoor lights
http://www.brettpeabody.com/
Check out http://brettpeabody.com! Searchlight truck project using AN TVS 3 and AN VSS1 xenon searchlights
looks like something @dull chasm uses to find cows
waiting for cisco cun... cundelabras to fix vlans as usual
so far.... 7 hours logged waiting for network people
gr8๏ธโฃ fun, n๐ง billing
hmmm, would appear I cannot have both mqtt and websockets listening on the same mosquitto host
so I probably need to create a second mosquitto host, and run that with websockets, and bridge the two
to get internet devices proxied into my network
or will disabling mqtt on one of them stop me from bridging them perhaps
just ordered two lumary rbcww strips, hope they still got the 8266 in them lol
suckers were 14 bucks a pop, couldn't pass it up
๐ฎ B-Day updates... I am behind ๐ฎ . Must update now!
70 amps? Is this for when the sun goes offline?
@last cedar just means inefficient with the light output close to that as a tea candle
foooking cisco people
configuring a static lacp portchannel
without informing me
what kind of morons configure static lacp anyway
now this is interesting https://www.amazon.com/LEKE-Motion-Equivalent-Security-Hallway/dp/B07H89YB6C not seen these before
IKEA sells similar ones
that can be charged
so we have two that are charged in case of power outages
seen battery operated pir lights before, but never a pir baked into a standard screw in bulb
I seen the pir adpaters that plug in to the socket then you plug the bulb into that etc
thats interesting, but if it's pitch black how do you find that little button? lol
carefully
just keep the bulb outside the fixture after charging it
then easy to reach place, then you can bring it with you
you know they make these things called flashlights right?
I have a few of those that you plug in and automatically come on when power goes out. that way if power takes a crap in the middle of the night we can see enough without killing ourselves lol
my last outage is 2 years back at least
psssh
last long outage we had was... 7 years ago, power was out for over a day in the winter
other than that we have probably had... 4-5 hours total of outages in 13 years
had a couple a few months ago, exactly one week apart. squirrel thought life was too cold then I guess it's mate couldn't go on living without him
amateurs
power goes off here for 8+ hours every couple of weeks
sometimes every day for 3-4+ hours
SD cards ๐คข
Guess you don't own a camera @clear ferry
well I do, but I haven't bothered touching my dslr in.... 7 years probably
yeah, 99% of the planet doesn't need anything more than a smart phone these days ๐
Ok professor
Most of my casual photos are done with my phone these days
I've got a good point-n-shoot that's barely been touched in a decade
The DSLR comes out any time I want a quality photo though
pssh, the huawei I had was light years ahead of my dslr in low light, even with a f1.8 lens it was nowhere near
I do miss the camera of the huawei though, the samsung has been a downgrade camera wise
Then again if you know your glass and light why would you need ai ๐คฃ
I have an SD card in each drone, one in my phone, one in my camera, one in each of my Pi
and a few spares
that should be enough vomit to kill atx
LOL
๐คข
I don't trust the fuckers, so I have none in my phone, I have one pi that I despise and the DSLR that appears to be used twice every 10 years ๐คฃ
@clever mortar that's a good one.
drones are great fun, but nothing useful for me
They started paying 9 years ago for me plus much fun.

@tidal bronze deals where?
Here! ๐

wow good deal for dog people lol https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FXC7JWQ
Anyone finding any actual good deals on smart devices for prime day?
i just bought a water valve by eve, nothing more needed on my part
i feel those nanoleaf lights are pretty outdated by now
@dusky plank one of the shutoff valves?
debating if i want a new amazon tablet or not ๐ค
im like usb-c awesome! but then again its a wall mounted tablet ๐
If you have usb c walls, go for it
lol
if you were thinking for kiosk for HA there is a youtube video that highlights the amazon tablet cons for using it for HA in that way lol
i wouldnt use kiosk....id use teh HA app directly
I don't remember what all the issues was, just know the video was about the amazon tablet and the dude was using it in kiosk mode
@forest edge well i do help out with the android side so if i notice anything wrong in the app ill attempt to fix it since i can ๐
@shy comet it's something with the amazon tablet screen or something. it was minor and the dude didn't mind it, just thought i'd mention it lol
the screen? hmm yea we dont do anything special with the screen....wall mounted tablets benefit mainly from sensors
i ahvent figured what is needed to get firebase working on those tablets...may just not be possible
how common are those cameras in your area? I feel like when I install sth like that the neighbors think I'm the FBI
well the other day someone in this channel is the fbi so ๐คทโโ๏ธ
cameras like that are not common around me lol
but at 120 bucks, it's not a bad deal
digi did a review on that camera or one like it
the zoom was insane lol
how the hell can an ssd be nas rated lol
Probably because it is a mixed use type
You have three types of ssds
Mixed, read intensive and write intensive
In enterprise we see write and read intensive a lot, not so much mixed use
TIL
I learn atleast 10 new products a year and I try to learn a new word in another language every day, up your game@dusky plank
Most domestic usage for SSDs is going to be read "intensive" anyway ๐
Probably
I doubt most home users are creating lots of data, maybe downloading it ๐
๐ฆฅ @clear ferry
I'm quite the sloth yes
nein
ssd are weird. not only do you have the three types (which I don't remember the names off the top of my head) bnut the oldest, original was the more robust one for longevity but even with that they all suffer performance loss and dependability the more you fill them up
was dumb too, like 50%+ or something and the thing starts to die at an accelerated rate lol
I should have looked up the max impedance of my audio interface before buying headphones, oh well. lol
You mean mlc, clc etc @forest edge ?
yea i can't remember the names, the last two are some variation of the first to cut down on cost
Let me tell you that there is atleast 6 new technologies since then
I don't even remember anymore what the latest one is
The one that comes to memory is 3d nand
@tidal bronze my audio interface barely has enough power for my new headphones ๐
What is this audio for ants ๐คฃ
haha, max volume is pretty decent levels
@dull chasm is that how you survived the hurricane winds? place your speakers towards the oncoming wind and turn up the polka?
Nah used AC/DC thunderstruck
@dusky plank cameras are very rare in Sweden. We have stupid privacy laws
I can film any public road
we can film everything thats on your own property but no public spaces
But not my neighbors driveway
pssshh whats that? properties for ants?
I can film
I have quite a small plot of land, only 800m2
all of the things
๐ค
googles that in acres

New home pod ;O
I was already about to sell it but the community prohibited it because the buyer, a hotel, would be in a monopol position then
uhh sexy homepod mini
๐ ๐คข
$99 is a bit much.
homekit will be the only way I can control my eve valve in HA so
well, better than 299 :/
๐คข
@dusky plank why did you pick that one? there was tons of them on the prime sale lol
because the other one was wifi and I saw even fewer chance to use it in HA
there were lots of computers, but not smart ones (garden valves I have to add)
ones i saw were more for like washer shutoff etc
but they could be used for anything
they were inline
outdoor?
no
so put a cover over it..
you don't want to see what I currently have in use
well outdoor or not, if it's in direct sunlight it's going to turn to shit
Same with all my houseplants ๐ข
5nm ๐
woohoo, the new pi can now boot from usb ๐
tho seems hass doesn't quiiiite like it, it keeps giving mmc0 sdhci timeouts
hm, maybe if i chuck in a blank microsd it'll be happy
Well, it'll be headless enough so I shouldn't need to worry about that at least. And web interface lives!
awesome
For those curious how to do this, it's pretty easy. Flash an external usb disc (ssd or spinning rust, pick your poison) using the rpi flasher same as you would an SD card, update the rpi4 firmware using rpiOS and enable usb boot, once it's flashed the bootloader shutdown out of rpiOS, remove microsd card, plug in usb drive, and boot up ๐
https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/boot-raspberry-pi-4-usb Used this guide, worked a treat.
@bitter pawn It does the job, and it's probably the most fully-featured free hypervisor available right now...
Hmmm. Looks like it lost connectino after starting the restore from backup... probably because of the different IP the OG pi had
I use it every day at work, most of our clients have moved from ESXi to Hyper-V because it's significantly cheaper ๐คทโโ๏ธ
i can see docker related messages on hdmi out and the disc activity light is flickering, so i'm assuming it'll come back on its own.
if not, ah well, won't take long to reinstall lol
show me proper pci passthrough on hyperv and we can talk
or even numa node addressing

?
You're muttering about install problems ๐
No problems yet.
@dusky plank Both of those work fine?
i can see from the hdmi output that we're installing addons that the old install had currently after initiating the restore from backup
it's PITA
@dusky plank Hyper-V refers to PCI Passthrough as DDA (Discrete Device Assignment)
And Windows has been Numa aware for eons
nah I'll stay with kvm
I'll stick with ESXi until I'm forced off it ๐
That said, containers are a TON easier to work with on Hyper-V than they are on ESXi, so I might finally start using them...
Getting the infrastructure and licensing in place to spin up vSphere Integrated Containers is just... not fun...
you should try fedora... it's amazing with containers and vmachines
All of my Linux VMs are CentOS8 ๐
Fedora's support lifecycle is too short for my taste
my main vm is arch ๐
