#

Good morning! Anyone here experienced with 3d printing and/or modelling? I'm working on transforming my bed into a giant scale for presence detection, but I'm a bit stuck designing holders for the load cells under my bed. I'd like to bounce a few ideas off of someone.

clear ferry
#

A lot of us dabble with 3d printing, a lot of other people have made load sensors for their beds

crisp mortar
#

I've indeed seen that. Lots of projects on the forums. I have copied some designs, edited them to my needs and printed them. But they don't really fit my bed. My bed doesn't have legs, but rests on two boards at the head and foot of the bed. So mounting the load cells is a bit difficult.

#

So I'm trying to come up with a smart way of fixing the load cells that will fix them in a specific position to prevent drift of the measured values.

#

This is what I have so far: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4614359

#

But they shift.

clear ferry
#

no idea for you, I have no need to measure load on bed as I can measure if someone is in bed by 3 other factors

turbid stirrup
#

How about PIR aimed at the bed?

clear ferry
#

that sounds.... not useful at all ๐Ÿคฃ

crisp mortar
#

Hey, I'm trying to improve the WAF, not obliterate it! ๐Ÿ˜›

forest edge
#

can you not make a center post that wouldn't be load bearing but would detect if someone was in the bed

#

if it's only being supported at the ends I can assure you the middle moves some lol

crisp mortar
clear ferry
#

for me it would be easy to see, a) is tv on ? we are in bed and awake, b) are the bedside lights on ? we are in bed and awake, c) is both our phones charging and lights are off ? we are asleep d) is my CPAP drawing power? I'm asleep, e) is my wifes phone charging, house lights are off and bedside lamps are off, she is sleeping

#

logics without measuring the damn bed

crap drawing power? how is that not always tick True?

#

You guys still have offices?

#

About two weeks ago, we had a company-wide briefing talking about how they plan to open up our offices gradually. First office was going to be the one in Poland, then their cases spiked. UK wasn't going to be far behind, now the government is saying to stay home if you can ๐Ÿคฃ

#

I honestly don't think I'll see my office until at least March next year. 12 months of remote working... and they still won't embrace it because they think people need to be face-to-face to get shit done.

clear ferry

Eh, We have offices, but I have asked to be classified as a edge worker for years, might happen this year

#

will control a lot more than that

clever mortar
#

Stable is trivial with a few thousand entities

#

SD cards fail

#

That's not if, that's when

#

Industrial cards will last a long time, dashcam/DVR cards will last years

#

That doesn't help

#

That just means you'll probably get 1+ years

#

How many what?

#

๐Ÿคท

forest edge
#

pi + usb ssd/hdd

clever mortar
#

SD cards, other than industrial/high wear will last between 1 month and 2 years, give or take a year or so

clear ferry
#

Or a proper machine

#

And not a kids toy

#

๐Ÿง™

clever mortar
#

NUC, old laptop, any "proper" computer running off an SSD/spinning rust will be way better than a Pi

forest edge
#

|| even though a rpi3 is faster than the bus sized relic in atx's garage ||

clever mortar
#

I run mine on an old laptop - silent, low power, lots of grunt, and a built in UPS ๐Ÿ˜‰

forest edge
#

an rpi is fine

clever mortar
#

High power systems using lots of power is a myth

clear ferry
#

Americans and their energy usage, if only computers could run on gas

forest edge
#

well they kinda can..

clear ferry
#

That's peanuts

clever mortar
#

They can but usually for very short bursts, and as a result will often average out at a lower overall power usage

clear ferry
#

My house idles at 5000w

clever mortar
#

My Xeon server idles under 40W - you just need to move with the times ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

My laptop draws well under 40W, given it's got a 40W PSU

clear ferry
#

That ain't bad, a 12 year old dual Xeon with disks will idle at 120w last k checked

forest edge
#

A Pi with HA just controlling some lamps, possibly a few motion sensors, should be entirely stable, eh?
recommending a nuc to this statement is absolutely insane imo

clever mortar
#

I cheat @clear ferry - it's a low power Xeon ๐Ÿ˜‰ Peaks at 25W ๐Ÿ˜›

clear ferry
#

Ooooof

#

That's like calling a porsche with a Subaru engine a Porsche

clever mortar
#

To be fair though, a Pi4 with an SSD won't be a bad choice

forest edge
#

the ideal depends on what your planning

clever mortar
#

Also, you can migrate ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

I started on a Pi3, I'm now on an old laptop, migration was trivial

forest edge
#

an rpi3 will handle your few lights and motion sensors without breaking a sweat

clever mortar
#

Mine handled a few hundred automations and a thousand or so entities without breaking sweat ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

Just the storage was ... s l o w

forest edge
#

there you go lol

#

well the rpi3 didn't have usb3 either lol

clever mortar
#

I'd still not go back from my laptop though ๐Ÿ˜„

#

Cameras without motion/object detection is fine

#

Even then, you can do the motion/object detection outside of HA

#

(I do)

forest edge
#

well when you get into cameras then you may wanna consider moving away from pi

clever mortar
#

Still want not Pi for that

forest edge
#

rpi4 can handle motion detection etc just fine on a few cameras

#

but again, if you plan to expand past like 5 cameras.. an rpi is not for you

#

or if you plan to do doods or whatever

#

personally i think rpi's are awesome especially for starting out. they are cheaper than other options, they themselves can be used for other things if you ever need to upgrade beyond it etc

#

an rpi2 is probably faster than any pc atx owns

#

no idea wtf your asking lol

clever mortar
#

(aka Docker)

#

Unless you're actually really at home on Linux, compiling packages from source, troubleshooting build issues...

forest edge
#

os it is then lol

clever mortar
#

Same as HA not in docker ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

It's HA, however you run it

#

๐Ÿคท

#

There's no magic load calculator since every install is different

#

๐Ÿคท

#

"not much, maybe"

#

It comes down to:

  • How often the sensors report in
  • What automations you have
  • What other integrations you're using
#

You could easily max out a Pi3, or run it on a Pi0 without noticing, depending on your setup

#

Probably not much load

forest edge
#

pretty sure any hub could handle that (if they could run HA)

#

You start out with just one step really

#

yes

clever mortar
#

Install HA, hook up a device tracker, or a weather integration, and maybe a notification, and start playing

#

You can do a lot without buying anything

#

My Pi3 floated between 25% and 50%, but I did abuse it ๐Ÿ˜„

forest edge
#

mine idles around 40+% but then I got a lot of crap lol

clever mortar
#

My i5 floats around 10%, but spikes to 40% or above regularly ๐Ÿ˜„

forest edge
#

you also do image processing and not just motion

clever mortar
#

Smart doesn't save energy...

forest edge
#

you overthink too much lol

#

if all you want is the lights to turn on before you get home m-f you can do that without HA etc, many simple things can be handled by the devices themselves. people who want to do more complex things while having one thing to control multiple brands locally is what HA does best for them

#

a smart switch can do that without ha

#

i am sure there is atleast one out there

civic tangle
#

Or we can make a channel dedicated to this purpose. I thought lounge meant we can post what we want lol

dusky plank
#

not if you want to run HA on it

subtle pasture
#

@clear ferry I'm probably going to have to move to Hyper-V on my HP Gen8 servers, since ESXi support stopped at 6.5

#

The latest version of Hyper-V will run on a potato with drivers from 2006 if you need it to, so it's a great way to keep old hardware alive.

#

ESXi 6.5 is still getting security updates for a while, so I haven't made the jump yet... but it's coming...

#

Aside from the hardware support, my backup solution (Veeam) works with both ESXi and Hyper-V, so I won't have to swap backup solutions or lose access to my old backup chains

steel crag
#

Veeam is pretty good at least

clear ferry
#

@subtle pasture well yes, if you require support, but if you require support on almost 9 year old servers, we have bigger problems tbh

dusky plank
#

guess they won't turn it off soon, afaik wsl runs on it. then again, wsl is nothing different from any other vm

bitter pawn
#

@clear ferry thats where the disconnect can be

#

burglar alarms have support for panels into the decades.

#

computer stuff usually cycles out in 4 years.

#

HA is kinda in the middle of those 2 technologies

#

God i love arbys.

#

i could die a happy man having 1 meal of arbys a day

clear ferry
#

If you are using ha as your primary alarm, you have bigger problems

bitter pawn
#

why would you use HA as an alarm system?

bitter pawn
#

trying to shoehorn burglar alarm functionality into a system that is not focused on intrusion, just seems like a stretch.

subtle pasture
#

@clear ferry Talking about my homelab, so the servers being on the older side is kinda expected...

clear ferry
#

Then just upgrade

subtle pasture
#

Gonna pay for that?

bitter pawn
#

^thats one option

#

xD

clear ferry
#

It'll run 6.7 fine

subtle pasture
#

Nope

clear ferry
#

Same license

subtle pasture
#

Tried it

clear ferry
#

I've run 6.7 and 7 on g7s and Gen8s

subtle pasture
#

Hardware monitoring goes tits-up if I upgrade from 6.5 to 6.7 on this hardware

#

Can't get correct readings on RAID controller status, fans, drive bays, etc.

bitter pawn
#

but does it still run?

subtle pasture
#

Which causes vCenter to throw a hissy fit because it sees the host as degraded, and HA/DRS starts migrating VMs off

#

it runs, but only if you then disable all HA and DRS...

clear ferry
#

It will run fine

#

Just disable proactive ha

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, no... no hardware monitoring is not "fine"

#

I absolutely want to know when I have a bad drive or a bad fan, or an overheat condition

#

If I upgrade to 6.7, I lose all that

bitter pawn
#

nods definitely a priority

subtle pasture
#

And 6.5 is still getting security updates, so it's still viable for the moment

clear ferry
#

Not seen any of those issues anywhere else tbh

subtle pasture
#

I've seen it on every HP Gen8 server I've tried to run 6.7 on

clear ferry
#

6.5 and 6.7 both die in a year though

subtle pasture
#

These are HP DL380 Gen8's, for reference

#

The only thing that works right is the HP Customized 6.5 ISO + hotfixes

clear ferry
#

Have you tried running the vanilla image without the ams ?

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, the vanilla 6.7 image will boot, but with no hardware monitoring

clear ferry
#

Interesting, I'll need to bring my g7 back from death to try

subtle pasture
#

and installing the HP add-ins on top of vanilla 6.7 results in a purple screen of death

#

Hah, a G7? It's hard enough to get those to boot into 6.5

#

You have to remove some VIBs from the 6.5 ISO to get it to work without boot-looping

clear ferry
#

I've run G7 with 6.7 for over 1.5 years

#

And 6.5 for over a year before that

subtle pasture
#

That must have been fun. I had a hell of a time getting the G7 servers at work to boot 6.5

clear ferry
#

No problems ever

subtle pasture
#

Wound up using VMWare's ESXi ISO builder to create a totally custom ISO

#

Because the HP customized 6.5 ISO = bootloop, and the vanilla ISO = no hardware monitoring

clear ferry
#

Irรธ ran the hpe image

subtle pasture
#

And it's a well known issue with 6.5 on Gen7 servers...

#

Like, there are multiple guides on how to work around it

#

So I really dunno how you didn't run into it

clear ferry
#

There was bootloop issues at some point because of the Intel monitoring driver I believe, which was rectified

#

I probably know of.... 150+ g7 servers running 6.5

subtle pasture
#

But yeah, 6.5 and 6.7 support both die in a year. At that point I'll just use Veeam to chuck everything over to Hyper-V

clear ferry
#

๐Ÿคข

#

Thankfully I only have to touch hyperv once or twice a year

subtle pasture
#

Make the sick face all you want, it actually supports the hardware and will remain current for a long time to come ๐Ÿ˜›

#

And it's not Proxmox, so it has that going for it

#

Anyway, off to drop off my ballot and get some lunch. Back in a few

have you try the distro build for the pinephone @dusky plank ? they might have better builing block for touchscreen based device

green inlet
#

@civic tangle , just curious. Can you plug the pi usb power cable into that phone charger and run two pi with basically a battery backup if power goes out? Basically just plug the phone charger in to power so it is charging all the time?

fiery sorrel
#

i hope the charge circuit is build for passthrough, or it might be a ballon before to long ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

civic tangle
#

I don't think you can use 2 pis at the same time because it might use too much power. I haven't tried that particular one, but it's supposed to support passthrough charging so yes, you can leave it plugged in and it will act like a backup battery. The important thing to look for if you use a battery pack is passthrough charging support.

shy comet
#

Back to the future did 4k restoration the right way by adding atmos ๐ŸŽ‰

fiery sorrel
#

that is impressive ... and worrysome.
extracting eatch sound from the stereo track and putting them in 3D space is a very tedious work.

shy comet
#

when done right its awesome

fiery sorrel
#

isn't is the first atmos that old ?

shy comet
#

but its better than keeping the original track which exists

fiery sorrel
#

i will have to try

shy comet
#

naw lots have converted already

#

you dont always see the 3d audio treatment usually its just video

fiery sorrel
#

oh, in my mind atmos is an audio tech ... so i what thinking about audio only

shy comet
#

dolby atmos is for audio

#

but i was saying usually when you see a 4k restoration sometimes they do the audio too and sometimes not

#

most of the good ones do both but not always

#

like Pitch Black....wouldve been pretty cool in atmos IMO

fiery sorrel
#

oh i get it :)
i'm still hook to my 1080P tv ... active 3D, a dead breed

i've see some of them in 4h HDR, way better colors but i really miss the depth in the landscape

#

i am hopping it might come back ... someday

supple moss
#

well, i've done it. Created a fake, MQTT AC thermostat that forwards commands from a single device in Alexa to the specific AC unit the room you're currently in ๐Ÿ˜„

all that just so i can say "turn the AC on" instead of "turn the thermostat on"

fiery sorrel
#

i still have planed to enable that hue emulation integration to controle stuff from a spot i have and my harmony remote ... But it feel like a pain to setup ...

shy comet
#

its painless @fiery sorrel

#

all you do is enable the integration

#

go to harmony

#

tell it to add a hue hub

#

when it says press the button

#

you sit and wait patiently for it to do its thing

#

it can take a few minutes on that screen

#

then once it connects youll get a list of devices that are added

fiery sorrel
#

didn't i read about needing a round first gen hue bridge in order to avoid cloud based com ?
I think i will get more issue because my nework is ... complicated. Making wlan comunicate with Lan is very hard.
Anyway, it's bedtime. :)

dusky plank
#

I just finished setting up popos now, will try pinephone sometime later, maybe never ๐Ÿ˜›

#

emulatedhue is easy, can confirm

supple moss
#

is there an integration for maker/webhooks?

#

trying to migrate an IFTTT applet..

subtle pasture
#

@fiery sorrel Nah, you don't need a hue bridge to use emulated hue

#

You do need an older Amazon Echo, though

#

The 3rd gen and newer Echos won't find devices presented by Emulated Hue

shy comet
#

ah didnt know you needed an older echo to use with alexa intereting

#

i only use it with harmony for the remote buttons and touchscreen control

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, I believe it's because it emulates a Gen1 Hue Hub, and Amazon dropped support for the Gen1 Hue Hub in later versions of the Echo product line

tidal bronze

@subtle pasture if I miss out on uber eats I know who to blame.

subtle pasture

Yikes :/

shy comet
#

lol i doubt itll come to that....lots of those people want benefits actually

subtle pasture
#

@shy comet That was my thinking. I have several friends who've driven for Uber and Lyft, so I've heard plenty about how much it sucks to be considered a contractor rather than an employee

shy comet
#

yea thers 2 crowds to consider....primary job and secondary job

tidal bronze

I doubt uber/lyft will go for this, risk of entire market wanting it.

tidal bronze

I guess 50% less drivers. 2 to 3 min up to 15 to 17 minutes.

shy comet

yea but does that take scheduling into account?

tidal bronze
#

I mean just on uber. UE is worse unless you go priority

shy comet

tidal bronze

yard signs have become such an issue around here there are daily posts. won't be long now till people start booby trapping them so that should get interesting

dull chasm
#

@subtle pasture not at all ....but alot of people do ..... the point is the dumbass thinking of doing something would think twice

subtle pasture
#

@forest edge Already happened. Someone had their yard signs stolen, and mysteriously returned a few days later... with razor blades taped to them...

dull chasm
#

yep .... nevery had no dumbass walk on my property and try something ... i dont think they would tbh

forest edge
#

you would probably landmine your yard if it were legal lol

dull chasm
#

plus booby traping implies for the unexpected .....if he steals ....not unexpected

#

no just attack geese ...best watchdogs ever

subtle pasture
#

You can't legally booby trap a mailbox, there's actually a lot of law about this...

#

Like, you can't even attach it to the ground too securely

static schooner
#

don't most go in concrete?

dull chasm
#

i know the law very well ...part of my occupation ...but ....

subtle pasture
#

A literal sentry gun that blows someone's face off if they open the door is gonna get you arrested, not the mail thief

forest edge
#

Like, you can't even attach it to the ground too securely
@subtle pasture maybe in cali.. i could see a ridiculous law like that there lol

wet pilot
#

Nope, mail is federal law

subtle pasture
#

@forest edge It prevents mailboxes from killing drivers if they happen to run into one...

forest edge
#

half the ones here are incased in concrete

dull chasm
#

no federal law requires that they break away ....for example a wooden post can be concrete as long as the post can break ...a iron pipe concreted cant so ..illeagal

static schooner
#

yeah, it was typical in Georgia to have mailboxes in little brick houses ๐Ÿ™‚

forest edge
#

i guess it could break if i semi hit one, but a car certianly would have a bad day lol

dull chasm
#

but @subtle pasture we have extremme laws for protection of land property and saftey ....

static schooner
#

we used to call them "crypts"

dull chasm

farm mailbox I eventually took down but I had that thing nested inside one of those old steel milk jugs attached to a 6x6 in the ground because mailbox smashing use to be such a problem

dull chasm
#

yea same here ....depends on local department of transpation ....they are usually the ones to enforce

forest edge
#

urks me half my town is the mailboxes attached next to the front door and the other half is at the street. and I got the street one.. I mean I want to be more lazy than that damnit

subtle pasture

Install a mail slot in the door

dull chasm
#

lol ....post lady would be pissed ...would take here 5 minutes to drive from street to house

forest edge

nah they won't deliever to door if the area is sanctioned for street mailboxes lol

subtle pasture
#

Or install an pneumatic tube from the street to your door ๐Ÿ˜›

#

shwoop

forest edge
#

then get something stuck midway.. no thanks lol

subtle pasture
#

That's why items in those tubes travel in canisters...

forest edge

yea I could see a mail person taking that time like one does at a bank

subtle pasture
#

Just saying, they generally don't have issues with things getting stuck

dull chasm

i have a goverment vehicle ....have not paid gas for years

subtle pasture

@static schooner They demand "business casual"... and I'm convinced they don't know what that term means, because they require a button-up blouse and slacks at minimum

You can get away wtih a polo shirt on casual fridays...

dull chasm

forest edge
#

@tidal bronze not my fault the rest of the country dosen't know what comfort is

static schooner
#

there's an expectation for folks who are customer/vendor focused, but even then there some folks are just known for the t-shirt/jeans treatment at all times

subtle pasture
#

If I had my way, I'd show up to work every day in band t-shirts and blue jeans, maybe throw on an open flannel over top (because the office is always freezing for no reason)

forest edge

the most "dressed" up i ever got for a job was wearing a polo shirt with jeans lol

static schooner

I've worn a suit when I had to speak at a conference and was overdressed. won't make that mistake again

subtle pasture

@static schooner Yeaaah, I'm not customer facing... not usually, anyway

static schooner

@forest edge so stone washed ripped jeans and pink distressed polo?

@rustic patio Not sure which install you're using? If you have system_health enabled you can check Configuration -> Info, or see the following.

  • If you're using HassOS, flashed an image, or booted a VM with an image you're using #330990055533576204

  • If you installed Linux and then ran a script to install HA and have add-ons then you have #330944238910963714

  • If you're running docker commands or use a Docker manager and have no add-ons then you have #449717345808547842

  • Finally, if you use pip to install or upgrade you have #551864459891703809

For those curious how to do this, it's pretty easy. Flash an external usb disc (ssd or spinning rust, pick your poison) using the rpi flasher same as you would an SD card, update the rpi4 firmware using rpiOS and enable usb boot, once it's flashed the bootloader shutdown out of rpiOS, remove microsd card, plug in usb drive, and boot up ๐Ÿ™‚
