#

@hushed basalt I worked at Box Hill Bunnings in Melbourne which is predominantly Han Chinese region, a lot of new Australian's with different cultural backgrounds. It was very common place for this clientele to buy cable that was 1mm smaller or speaker cable if it saved a few dollars, cable is generally over rated, 2.5mm can easily handle 27amps without heating. So if the oven was 30 amps they would buy 1mm speaker cable to save costs, the cable would get hot but it would not burn out. Ultimately I could only advise and give feedback if someone wanted to risk burning their house down that was at there digression. The issue in my context was a lot of people did the same practice back home without issue and saw Australia's Electrical code as overbearing so just ignored it and did whatever was cheap.

UniFi are just one that's relatively cheap, integrated, and point-n-click

Point and click

my house is three stories high and a simple access point does not cover everything. So I need something that gives me various access points. I now use a netgear mesh but it does not offer vlans.

clever mortar

There's a wide range of options there, if you want GUI managed Unifi is probably the cheapest

it's a NUC, it'll work

If it doesn't have an AMD64 compatible CPU, you can still run in a venv

Hello @everyone i have all the devices with sonoff/shelly wired in, installed hass.io on rpi and some more settings, also i have access to all my switches from hass web interface but i wish to make some more automations and to make all of that overall bit smarter. Is there anyone willing to spend some time to review my setup and help me complete missing parts. I also wish to have slightly better interface than a default one. I would reward the help.

clever mortar
#

@silk pagoda Thankfully that tag doesn't work, or you'd have sent a notification ping to a few thousand people

#

You really shouldn't ever use that ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

Given that there's a bit over 4K folks online right now... there's probably another 8K offline, so 12K people wondering why they got a notification ping...

silk pagoda
#

@clever mortar i knew it would not work, it was more to punctuate that i'm addressing everyone

clever mortar

I'd suggest posting that on the forum though, it won't vanish from view in 30 minutes there ๐Ÿ˜‰

silk pagoda
#

Though, thank you @clever mortar

clever mortar
#

In that case, you need to (not in the channel) explain what you've got already, what you're looking for, and what kind of reward you're considering. Then folks can eyeball it and work out if they're interested

silk pagoda
#

@clever mortar do you have any idea how much someone would expect for an hour or two of consulting me what and how to do?

clever mortar
#

Basically, you're looking to "hire" somebody to do work, so describing the "job" is good

#

~irc @silk pagoda

velvet horizonBOT
#

@silk pagoda Discord isn't like IRC, you don't have to tag people on every response. Keep in mind that every time you tag somebody, they get a notification ping. That can very quickly become annoying and people may block you.

clever mortar
#

The answer will depend on where in the world, what their skill level is, etc etc etc

#

Practically, look at what it'd cost to get a plumber out (say)

#

If I'm hiring an expert I'd expect to be paying up to a few hundred pounds an hour

#

For a hobbyist, ยฃ50 or so an hour, maybe, but ๐Ÿคท

silk pagoda
#

๐Ÿ‘€ well, definitely we live in different worlds : )

#

Good, i should spend some more time reading the docs, this would not work this way : )

#

haha

clever mortar
#

As I said, where in the world you live matters ๐Ÿ˜‰

silk pagoda
#

well, thank you anyway, it's definitely not an option to do...

#

I'm from Bosnia

clever mortar
#

It might be, but you need to know the budget (both in total and in terms of hourly) you can afford

#

If all you can afford is โ‚ฌ50, then being up-front about that will help folks know if they're interested

#

Maybe for somebody else that's a big deal ๐Ÿคท

silk pagoda
#

It's not about the money but this one is pretty much open for different interpretations of how much time is required...

#

50 GBP is ok but i don't respect the job that much since i could do much of it, just was looking for an experienced copilot that would ake some shortcuts for me

#

instead, i should probbabbly go back to the docs..

clever mortar
#

Experienced co-pilot ... experience costs money ๐Ÿ˜‰

silk pagoda
#

you know that some parts are extremely confusing

clever mortar

They can be, but anybody can submit updates

silk pagoda

@clever mortar I agree...

Really

#

Don't

silk pagoda

clever mortar

silk pagoda

#

I see no reason for that

clever mortar
#

I told you I wasn't going to help you in a DM and you DM me anyway?

#

I see plenty of reason to block you

silk pagoda
#

I didn't see that as asking for help. It was more like friendly oppinion. I'm definitely not an asshole but yeas i'm stupid to think that there is friendly people out there. There is much more assholes. I can agree on that one.

green inlet
#

Whoooooo

#

You are slowly working your way to no help at all

clever mortar

Well, that or a ban... ๐Ÿคท

#

Which amounts to the same thing

green inlet
#

I wanted to say something several times but figured I should keep my mouth shut ๐Ÿ˜Ž

#

Let you handle it

silk pagoda
#

All fine.

green inlet
#

There are plenty of people here who will help you. You have to realize they do this in their spare time. You have to be willing to help yourself though. Identify your problem, read the docs, and if you get stuck, find the proper channel and ask a specific question.

silk pagoda
#

@green inlet ย i did a lot, i didn't come here to ask "hey how to start and complete" everything. It's just that i never ever seen anyone experienced with homeassistant i i have no idea if i'm missing some good features. The best practices are not always shown in the docs.

I was looking for a help but before that i have a short list/description of what devices i have and what parts i'm missing, i my intention was to hear someones comment on that. If i should make some changes before i ask for further help, if something could make things easier etc. I was not comfortable of sharing all of it in public chat.

But this friendly guy lost his nerves, i believe he spends a lot of time in this chat and maybe he should take a break sometimes. I absolutelyย see no reason to say that someone is an "arsehole" as he told me in pm.

clever mortar
#

I said no I won't answer your DM

#

You DMd me

#

That's an arsehole move

#

You can share stuff in the channels, that's how it works

green inlet
#

And you are still pinging people

#

I dont know Tinkerer personally. I do know him from here. He is very well respected and from what I can see, very patient. He has told you what to do, I have told you what to do, but you want to do it your way?

silk pagoda
#

Blok me, completely ok, don't tell me i'm an asshole. No need for that!

clever mortar
#

There's a saying...
No means no

silk pagoda
#

There is an interesting fact that internet connects people with different backgrounds and very different cultural norms. Despit all the differences, insults ans calling someone asshole is definitely always very rude behaviour and especially in this particular "mistake" that i made, i see no reason for pulling that out and calling me like that.

Maybe you will think about that sometimes later.

Can anyone point me towards an idiots guide to Portainer? I wanted to try setting up a Minecraft server (I've already been told, this isn't a great idea on a RPi) but I don't know enough to translate the commands given here (https://hub.docker.com/r/itzg/minecraft-bedrock-server) to the GUI inputs in Portainer.

clear ferry
#

You should rather focus on learning the cli than a GUI, if you want real value from learning it

zealous rune
#

Of Docker?

clear ferry
#

Yes

clever mortar
#

If you understand what the docs there describe you should be able to translate it to any half decent UI

zealous rune
#

OK, then I'll work on learning more about Docker and from the CLI.

clever mortar
#

Mostly you'll likely need to set the port, and a volume for the data. Other things are mostly optional, though accepting the EULA will be good

#

Best way to learn IMO is a test box/VM that you can mess about in

clear ferry
#

And not running it on a pi will be a great step

clever mortar
#

That and referring to the Docker docs, they're pretty solid

#

My test Docker system is a Pi, it's fine, if ... not fast

clear ferry
#

But... For Minecraft?

clever mortar
#

For a single user it works

#

Not awesome, but it works

zealous rune
#

Is the issue with Minecraft the number of users or the world?

clever mortar
#

You do want to run one of the cut down builds

#

The issue is that the Pi ain't fast or powerful enough

zealous rune
#

A month or two down the line I was planning on moving over to a NUC. For learning, it shouldn't matter the platform. If it's slow then maybe my kids will get frustrated and go take out the trash once and a while. Hmm, maybe make an automation to slowly pull system resources the longer they play? ๐Ÿ˜‰

clever mortar
#

๐Ÿคฃ

#

As I said, it works, you'll want to look at the Spigot builds from memory though

#

They're deliberately cut down a bit to run on lower power systems
