@forest edge lighting in the dead of winter is a strange thing, I was out playing on a snow mound when I was a kid and lightning struck somewhere and I was fucking snowblind for 5 minutes
lol

thundersnow is cool though. experienced it in Rochester, NY one winter
@clear ferry sure it just wasn't the very first light bulb in your country being lit up for the first time? lol jk

I would like to see some of the fucked up US weather up close though, like supercells etx
We don't get that stuff here
oh yeah, it can be nuts
we had a microburst take out our huge hay barn one year. I didn't get to actually see it in action but saw it right after. crazy stuff
everything around the barn was perfectly fine, as if a nice sunny day but the barn itself was demolished as if someone blew it up lol
as far as the temps going all over the damn place. it's annoying, not fun
if i was alivve in 1921 I would be calling you whippersnapper

It really seems like our news stations are super desperate for ratings or something with how they skew the context of just about everything involving covid lol
Better protect that second amendment from that covid, it's only invented to take it away

uh
lol
pretty messed up that one of the most googled things during all of this is, "can I get a legal divorce on zoom" lol
Hmmmmmmmmm
@forest edge thatβs sad π
Morning
I think I broke the Norwegian
Probably that day I drove to Arendal, then Lillehammer and then back, so 12hours just driving @hushed basalt
bring coffee to the boss?
The job in Arendal was just a power supply and some firmware, Lillehammer was replacing a system board I think
expensive PSU
@fading zodiac not when you already pay for 24/7/365 with 4 hours response time
Doesn't change the cost of the PSU
@hushed basalt he can only drive as far as the first turn then it's all over https://i.imgur.com/5Zegtyc.gif
4 hour response time and the nearest support is 6 hours away :D
Lot of that in Norway @hushed basalt my furthest away customer is 14 hours by plane if I'm bad at timing
Thats from topgear
I've had amazon prime orders faster than that
@fading zodiac well, since it was a Unix system it was probably $500 to begin with, then throw my hours and some more on top
@clear ferry just talking about the hours here
Your the most costly part of it (mostly)
Yeah, it's probably a good thing that I don't do break fix these days, $110 per hour for overtime me
No wait, that is just the money I get... Customer pays $280ish
The system boards for the Unix systems are up to $8000 though
As a customer experienced after letting his contract elapse and a server going down
π
Was probably close to $15k in parts, and $4k in hours
this is Norwegian bucks so that about a buck fifty US
Sounds like a server pet
Trollars hm
Servers should be cattle not pets
Should provide them with water?
you probably do, remind me of those Canadians who ripped me off for my pizza all acting as if the exchange rate was equal or something lol
They should be disposable
Indistinguishable, interchangeable
When you have "this super important server" that leads to a whole range of problems
Another reason to move to the cloud ;)
I haven't had to deal with Azure fortunately/unfortunately?
Cloud π€’
Also, Unix servers are far to important mostly to be hosted by someone else
I'd agree, but my org doesn't π
On the other hand, at least I can have a new host up and running in minutes...
Now is probably not the time...
Or however long it takes folks to buy stuff
I love it when customers move to cloud or a new vendor, then 5 months later they call like hey you got any more of those servers
Yeah.... I've seen quite a few folks go "cloud native" then realise that it's ain't "all that" and end up with some cloud and some metal
Yeah, I have a few customers a year that do that
They usually last 1-2 years in cloud
Then come back
Best is the guys that outsource local it , so turn around time for reinstalling a laptop is 6 weeks
Outsourcing local IT is ok, if they're still local
Usually they aren't in my experience
Yeah if you're big enough you really should keep that in house
And run it well
My wifes org has in house IT afaik but they're very typical corporate IT departments
"can't do that. Policy says no"
"can't do that. Not part of the ticket"
"can't do that. Don't want to"
Is it typical for corporate IT to disable bluetooth
Also they force laptop closed = sleep and lock
Never seen that either
So everyone has to go from office to meeting rooms cradling their open laptops
π€’
Also my wife used to do half of her consulting out of the office
And they could only access their network drives in the office
So she only had local disk storage 50% of the time
Yeah - used to work for Samsung. Security was silly tight - Bluetooth was disabled and you needed approval to enable it
Along with other things
We have used Microsoft Directaccess since windows 7, it actually works great for most stuff
Samsung kind of makes sense
Intellectual property theft/espionage would be crazy in that market
It does - very protective of their IP
I mean this is medical records
But no one is targetting that. Not her industry
Also she couldn't use any wifi either
She had to use the company provided mobile hotspot
I'm so ingrained in the product roadmap I would probably be on paid furlough for 6 months before I could start at a competitor
I think they whitelist the vpn bssid to it or something
So, 6 month holiday then @clear ferry π
ROADMAP: Sell high buy low
Yeah, basically
The laptops had modems in them too which was infuriating
If you've banked enough leave, you could get a year off...
Slacker π
Just have more kids
Then I'll just have more days off
That's the point!
Still have 80 days of paternity leave to use
Shhh Americans will be crying in 401ks and can't retire until they are 99
My M570 arrived on Friday, time to pick it up today
Magic trackball of doom
MSI MS70. NOW WITH MORE RGB LEDS
good morning beautifull friends π

Ah m570

I swear I'm half dyslexic
@clear ferry war-mode on?
I have the MX ergo

the ergo?
Yeah
Perfect for you
Mine is more tilted than Thor
https://media.tenor.com/images/12a03e597ee3a907f5c88c223a8e025f/tenor.gif
Not that much though
BIG BOI
That's the weirdest mash up I've seen @clear ferry - more so than the body mouse π
Yes
Put a trackball in the middle of that badboy and I'd consider it
SafeType Keyboard
In general, there's not a lot of room for innovation in the keyboard market. Sure, you'll get a few companies still making Dvorak layouts, and maybe some with extra function keys and weird stuff for video editors, but most typing devices look pretty much the same. And then there's the SafeType, which is basically what would happen if you invented a medieval torture device you could also compose a resume on. Instead of bending your wrists to type, you hold your arms in front of you with palms facing each other to type on the keys on the outside of the two elevated platforms. Sure, you can't see the keys you're pressing, but you'll figure it out eventually.
I'm tempered.....
90 degrees is just as bad as 0 degree devices

I don't think I've got more than half a dozen spare PS/2 to USB adapters left @clear ferry
Linus
could get tricky...
I would say 30ish degree tilt is best for me
@clever mortar aw fam, got you covered, I have atleast two dozen
π
I think I've even got the PS/2 mouse adapters still in a drawer too...
And, somewhere, there's should still be a serial -> PS/2 adapter
Well, that has to be one of the less common things folks do
That and seeing mihalski post about how his system has run without issues for more than 24 hours...
bluetooth and windows 10 is broken
i only get handsfree with my current bluetooth headset
and its actually garbage
Handsfree you say
Then Bose of choice
Qc35 II is good for me
Haven't tried the new 700
like i get these 2 options
and the bottom one can utilize both mic and headphones
whereas i cant use mic in stereo settings
something with bandwidth problems of bluetooth according to google
I've got the Bose QC25 and it's a good all-rounder at a relatively reasonable price
PEBKAC YO MOM

multiple people have this problem
imma throw my mug to your head lol

you gotta be that kid that annoys everybody in class back in the day π
Just back in the day?
Shhh Americans will be crying in 401ks and can't retire until they are 99
@clear ferry 63 fool
With worthless 401k's ?
you forget about social security?
and 401's aren't worthless
if the company you work for is worth a shit
Do Americans link their retirement capital to their companies?
many companies pay into employee retirement funds like the 401
some even have thier own ontop
someone could easily get like 3-4 diffrent checks each month in retirement
@midnight adder Right click>Disabled devices
Eek
No way I'd trust my employer with my retirement
Why don't they just have industry superfunds
Why is employment in the US so different?
In my country, they can't fire you without any reason or some sort of case.
@hushed basalt they don't have access to withdraw, only deposit lol
@fading zodiac its like that here
But who manages the fund @forest edge
What happened now
Who controls where it's funds are invested
We need to find someone to get in our group of modcallers
Here the state, and all your employers will deposit into the same account, that is only a few percent invested, so the rest is just capital
@fading zodiac thats what i found online, didnt work
as far as investing, your thinking of a traditional bank fund. these are diffrent
I find the retirement stuff odd.
I don't mind putting it at a place for you to save.
But the thing is: they still control what happens to it later.
@fading zodiac why would you be a part of that then?
@forest edge No choice?
Even if I don't put anything into my retirement fund I will probably have $70k per month if I retired at 63
As i said, i like to put in stuff for later
@clear ferry why do i highly doubt that
@forest edge because muuuuurica?
@clear ferry 70K per month is way too high
Not with my salary and state funding
you make half a mil/mo atx?
lol
thats more like it atx lol
Good thing I don't deal in trollars
most Americans pull in anywhere between 2k - 9k a mo after retirment
9k is really high side
but if you combine husband/wife that's easily doable
Yeah, 7k is it I don't put anything extra in from my own funds
If I did some each month I could probably do 10 per month
But meh, I might die tomorrow
would depend how norway structured the retirment payout
it changes based on earnings, pay in etc
I have one life insurance through work and one private, so my wife gets 200k USD if I die, and my daughter gets dead dad pension until she is 18 anyway

you also gotta remember that 2-9k/mo is just social security.. that isn't including things like the 401k and any additional seperate retirment funds companies put together for employees
this is why you see many retired americans travel a whole lot
cause if you had a good job, worked at it for many years.. you make bank after retirmement lol
many times that's just 1 person in the houshold
collecting retirment
when both work it can be a whole lot
lol stay at home mom.. this is 2020.. try stay at home dads
trying to watch a YT spoken in German while using the auto translate to English is horrifying
@forest edge in germany all the movies have german voice overs
so the lips are never in sync

They should just subtitle it
stubborn π
I don't watch any of my foreign stuff dubbed except for anime (if it's good )
Anime has some notoriously shit english voice actors though. That's what decades of gatekeeping an industry does.
i never watch anime
not my type of coffee
generally dont watch anything besides movies
and some documentaries haha
When I'm in Germany, the only thing that isn't German on TV or computers or games is CNN
@midnight adder I only watch a very small amount
I don't like most of them
I think I've only watched three or four series in the past 10+ years
@strange vapor won't work on my wifes corporate laptop
Hi Guys, for those of you having trouble to justify your Homelab energy cost to your wife/husband, check out my new post! This might give you room for negociation...
https://mysticmarvin.eu/homelab-energy-monitor/
Hello, I cannot update to 0.108 I am running 0.107.7 but 0.108 is not showing up at supervisor, also with the cli it says there are no updates... do you know the issue? or is 0.108 not out yet?
#330944238910963714 logically @outer lake
Hi guys. I have a situation and I need to start a fresh instance, the current setup I have is homeassistant 103.6, and I want to know what is the smoothest option to relocate all my things to 108.6 fresh install.
Is it enough to move the config folder itself, as is, and restart the service?
Largely, yes, depending on how you installed
Not sure which install you're using? If you have add-ons, or see references to either Hass.io or Supervisor, then you're using #supervised. If you're running natively in Docker or in a venv then you have the #alternative install method
Then #672217570283094017
Its not the common flow of installation?
Depends on your skills
I know many uses hassio due it internally leverages docker, but its a bsd host, so I run it in a jail.
Thing is, my existing jail got into some messy phase where I cant pull new updates and my python installation there got somewhat corrupted, not sure what it is
Well, we can help in #672217570283094017 - easy enough
Thanks!
And if that's FreeNAS there's an awesome plugin π
Head over to #672217570283094017 π
π
That's because there's no #chaos channel
Yes
Now you are just #330944238910963714.
We could make a #diy-archived Chaos channel in #general-archived .
I'm pretty sure @clever mortar is lawfully chaotic
@clear ferry I agree. It's even in the #devs_documentation-archived hosted in the #cloud-archived
π
Is this Instagram?
I have somewhat Chaotic Good tendencies, with the intrusion of some Lawful Evil plans
Better tag @mΓΈdz
π π
I did
You can say what you want
but i was the only one (with @ocean mirage ) who did that fuckuop
And is still around.
If you only knew the stupid stuff I've done
What do you mean 256 disks is two too much?
@clear ferry What stuff diid you do to earn that blue name?
@clear ferry 2 CD DRIVES

I've once had a family friend saying his PC didn't work and went slow.
Went over there, first thing i did was reboot it.
Thing was fast and fine. Guy was amazed. I asked him, didn't you turn it off and on before?
I do that everything he said. So i asked him how he turned it of.
And he just turned the screen off. PC had been running for a full year or so.
Had that happen to me multiple times over the years
Worked with end users almost 20 years ago
π€’
Iβm so popular lately
Yep

I know at one point the micro-switches in the M570 were being sourced from a low quality sources
#frontend-archived @formal temple
They'd fail after about 12 to 18 months, giving you strange missed clicks, multi-clicks...
I've been using those styple of trackball for ages, have an Ergo next to me right now.
And yes, the M570 was notorious for having the switch go dodgy π¦
Haven't had the Ergo long enough to see if it sufferes from the same.
I've had mine since 2017... still going strong, just a little dirty π
I have an emergency M570 in the office, since they're so cheap
Funnily enough I still have the origin M570 I got years ago in daily use. Had two or three fail with dodgy switches since that one..
20c here now
About twice as warm as us then π
Wind chill means you're almost three times as warm π
But hey, we're due to get 20C in about June or so...
Wind chill, you mean British weather
Scottish
Down South they get it warm, humid, and air you can chew with all the crap in it
Considering the distancing thing, maybe I'll do the British road vacation this year instead of London
Do the North 500
To the places where you'll see no signs of civilisation for hours... you should be used to that π
You mean like anything north of Stockholm in Sweden
Pretty much π
I moved South and drove through Sweden, after passing the first border town up north my GPS said in 700km turn right
We have that sort of stuff in my state too
2% of Australia is populated though

An open-source keyboard for serious developers, gamers, and people who care deeply about their craft.

My wife would never approve a $500 keyboard
She doesn't need to know
Atleast a mechanical keyboard won't bother your wife
Mine would kill me
@last plaza I use a powered reel
That's our maximum today too
Daughter is just starting to enjoy daycare now
No more crying on drop off
Just in time for me to get a job
In a zoom meeting. Anyone want to crash in? π
link?
Anyone know of a platform to sniff Bluetooth / WiFi? I want to sniff both around my house and hopefully build a database of know devices. Then some how get an alert when an unknown pops up. I know it might not be very reliable but something to play with during shelter in place
lol. Not going to actually do it. We only use zoom with external vendors. We are Skype mostly.
Itβs just crazy how open zoom is.
@last plaza during his zoom meeting. https://blog.zoom.us/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/video-virtual.gif
π€£
clever girl
teams crashes all the time for me
Teams hasn't been great when I've used it.
I was on a zoom "talk" last week with 300+ attendees and swapping between 3 remote speakers, and it just worked without issue.
I haven't had a single problem, I've been in close to 150 teams meetings already, and I've hosted three with video / presentations
Most of the ones I'm in are 70+ attendees
Was a teams call with Azure folk last week, and it worked, but passing control between participants seemed a lot more clunky than Zoom. This was with MS employees controlling the thing.
Oh, and the web interface doesn't support FF, which is damn annoying when Zoom does.
No issues with that here, passing control often to L2 /L3 engineering
Ts3? I ran TS and ts2 servers ;)
Kids these days
I ran ventrilo and Roger wilco at some point too
And mumble for the last 6 years, though I don't think anybody uses it anymore
lol roger wilco
π
TS has been around for a very long time they didn't miss nothing. They just didn't evolve
finally got a chance to play with WLED.....this thing is pretty bad ass, very impressed
weeds are setup for 4/20? π
@dull chasm have you messed with any audio visualization yet for WLED?
@dull chasm is this you ? https://i.redd.it/0njp56qtayt41.jpg
No fixing to try Hyperion thou
Hyperion does both audio and video? i thought it was only video lol
wait, wled has audio visualization? With some mic connected to the board or what?
i believe it works based on integration with another app
so far I saw people talk about LEDfx
the other app controls WLED
yea i think thats what Hyperion does too
it's just used as a gateway to the controllable LED pixels
ah ok yea i just wanted to mess with more stuff the default effects in WLED are cool now I just want to see what else it can do lol
@shy comet xlights is big
This guy shares all his sequences
Here it is β My 2017 Halloween Light Show featuring the music of The Nightmare Before Christmas!
Want this sequence? Get it today at https://magicallightshows.com
To use this video in a commercial player or in broadcasts, please email licensing@storyful.com
Please like, sha...
wow
Yea it accepts e131 protocol so and that can a middle man to capture and send to controller ie falcon player or Hyperion
if i show this to my wife it will become the next project lol
yea thats what i wanted to try and setup to learn how that works
It's a lot of hours of work
I have 700 strings of ws2811 for Halloween and Christmas
yea after showing my wife a basic setup she was all about it lol
wow
i just started with 50!
the psu is only 12a so i probably need a larger one if im gonna do 700 lol
Building some stuff for indoor windows installation with regular ws2812 at some point
yea were jsut now thinking about how many we want and where to place them lol
i think the first one will go on the patio as teh WS2811 strip i have now is outdoor rated so just need to extend it
wonder how many LEDs i can power from a 5v12a PSU
just changed remote access for home assistant and my other services to ipv6. E Z P Z. should have done it a while ago
what do you mean limit it?
You can tell wled how big your psu is
And the LEDs will never Go above a brightness
So the power draw is lower
oh as opposed to specifying how many LEDs you have?
@shy comet 60ma per led
haha ok
Become stationary @dull chasm
is that a threat?
Lol I got this driveway locked down
claymores or you're not even trying
Lol unit is in the way
absolute unit
Yep
@shy comet you up and running? π
is this the right place for a question about pcb board pin headers and tasmoto flashing?
@tidal bronze got any recs for weatherproof connectors that have some way to deal when something's NOT plugged in?
@tidal bronze yup i checked out all of the effects that come with it and the HA integration now im wanting to branch out with audio visualization lol
any recommendations for making the lights react to music?
just need 2-pin
Checked out molex?
I didn't see any good solutions for covers/plugs when the socket's not in use
They have screw on caps. But 2 pin..... let me see
I'm going to attempt to make my garden watering thing modular so I can just have 12V drops and water quick connects along a manifold
if I put a station near a plant I'd just plug in the 12V and use the quick connect for the water
module would be a wemos with a buck shield and a relay shield
relay would control a solenoid, moisture sensing in via i2C
You can checkout power poles with dust caps.
like anderson powerpole?
yes
@last dirge I use these for my greenhouse project
#Aliexpress NOK 9.20 11%OFF | Waterproof connector SP1610 IP68 cable connector plug & socket Male and Female SP16 2Pin 3Pin 4Pin 5Pin 6Pin 7Pin 9Pin
https://a.aliexpress.com/_dXJrfDW
Smarter Shopping, Better Living! Aliexpress.com
@shy comet https://github.com/ahodges9/LedFx
@clear ferry and now my aliexpress is stuck on the netherlands version
what hell hath you wrought?

what size cable are you using?
@shy comet I am thinking of doing 2 sets of led strips for each TV. 1 for hyperion UDP and 1 for ledfx E1.31 protocol. UDP takeover and idle release is not that great.
Different ones 22awg for power and 30 awg for sensors @last dirge
there's no pictures of what's under the cable end
@tidal bronze so you prefer ledfx over the audio reactive one?
is it just a buna n rubber sleeve and a little compression dealie like are on most PoE cameras?
yes
GETTIN SPENDY
@tidal bronze does ledfx need a microphone or does it work based on certain players like spotify?
their docs only tell you how to install it and not configure it lol
External audio source
I am working on this too https://github.com/aschober/vinyl-cast
Plan is to stream everything to chromecast audio >> ledfx
damn was hoping it would connect spotify and not need a microphone lol
So anything that get's streamed to VIZ chromecast speaker group gets led output π
Like I told you yesterday, it's a rabbit hole. Better get used to doing things that you didn't want to π
@tidal bronze you were just going to use regular AC solenoid valves, weren't you?
That's what I have. I am using regular sprinkler valves
there's stupid cheap DC solenoid valves available, but they're not weatherproof
and the price jumps 3X when you get ones that are
@shy comet planning to run on this.
@tidal bronze what's that?
intel compute stick
what's it run?
windows
regular windows?
yep
that's what I use for IP cam displays. HA >> Eventhost and VLC
that'd pretty much be a "must have" for someone who travels a lot for work
stick it in the back of the hotel TV
yep π
hmm if ledfx requires a microphone then its gonna need to be on a per room/speaker basis
looks like hyperion is easier to get setup lol
Reason for me to pick from CC speaker group
these aliexpress folks are just like ebay
"ooh, lower price"
"damnit, shipping makes this one more than the other one"
@tidal bronze yea but you need to use the same device to stream from right?
source >> CC audio >> ledfx
yea the issue is getting my wife to sue the same device instead of her phone which doesnt have mic or sound card hooked up
hyperion is easier since its just based off the tv
too bad i cant do audio visualization the same way hyperion does it ol
so i found out that i basically need to rip out my entire valve box for my irrigation system. anyone have any tips? and also recs for a controller?
i thnk rainmachine is local control
i have rachio
depending on where you live you may be able to get the controller for free
check rebates in your area
i'm not a huge stickler for local control
if the online features are compelling enough at least
i got my rachio for free
i have no complaints about rachio
i set it up, added my schedule and it does everything else on its own
opensprinklerpi is all local
you can expose it on the internet if you want
I don't think there's a cloud solution for that
@wet pilot "valve box" being your controller?
or you have to replace your manifold and all of its valves too?
all my valves are toast π¦
Did nobody warn you that toast is really bad for that?
for rainmachine
@wet pilot what valves?
and if it's the solenoid that's bad, some allow you to replace just the solenoid
the full system was left dry for a few years so i think everything wore out. Had a tech come through to check it out and everything was really slow to respond
they're all about 20 years old now so might be worth replacing anyway
just make sure you install everything so you can replace stuff without cutting
or you have it installed in such a way
yeah i definitely have to cut everything out this time. hopefully it won't be that stupid
where do you live?
NC, USA
which part?
Charlotte area
i'm not sure what that is
it allows you to put compressed air into the system to blow out the water
oh, then i think so
so it doesn't freeze and bust everything to hell when it freezes
might wanna add that
unless everything is buried well below your frost line and all of your pop-ups are deep you have potential for problems
on the source side there's a big thing with 2 ball valves that have nubs that look like they accept a compressor
that's probably what that is
wow hyperion is really simple to install, using hypercon on windows
What z-wave & zigbee hub is the favorite among this community? I am planning an HA install in a VM on a NUC.
We hate hubs
i thought vera was decent
@clear ferry what hardware do you use to communicate with zigbee & z-wave?
anyway, the HUSBZB-1 is a popular zigbee/z-wave combo stick. US only though
@shy comet hyperion-ng is better π MS sound mapper input
@clear ferry that would be best/easiest for HA on a raspi right? @scenic radish I saw that when looking online. If I put HA in a VM, I'd have to passthrough the USB to the VM which is iffy.
See the #zigbee-archived and #zwave-archived docs @tepid arrow π
They explain what sticks are supported
#zwave-archived is easy, #zigbee-archived is more complicated, but those channels can explain
@clever mortar thanks, will check those out. I was thinking of a smartthings hub, that way it wouldn't need to plug into the HA device. But before I go wasting money, I'd like to learn from y'all's experience. π
Don't
my zwave stick was no problem when I migrated to docker
Also, each integration tells you if it's local, or cloud
Most hubs are cloud π
SmartThings is cloud, and their cloud service is ... often dead
Wink... well, yeah, enough said
I currently use Wink, and while it's super easy, it's super slow and unreliable. Which is why I wanna drop it like a sack of potatoes
It's also a question of when they'll go bankrupt/be sold to yet another player
i've heard vera is decent and (i believe) home assistant controls it locally
It is, and it is
Fibaro is also local - but it's local push
Vera is undocumented as to whether it's push or poll
@tidal bronze what does taht offer over hypercon?
i got it setup on a fire stick very cool! now to install the lights on the back of the tv
webui runs on vm
going to give lidarr a whirl
i see what you did there
kinda odd that they're named backward from the part of the spectrum they relate to
lidarr vs sonarr
Works nice
I need like a 3 inch wifi rgbcw strip
But storages are apparently full so it's expensive to store it
i'm concerned gas stations might have to close down
heh
But it's pretty crazy to think about
yeah, really nuts
it's almost like doing stuff solely for the pursuit of money isn't the best way to do things
I dunno most of those people are getting bailed out by taxpayers so in the end
they aren't losing out
infact many making bank
so greed does pay off?
Should do like Denmark
Any company that gives it dividends, does stock buyback or pays bonuses to management will not get bailouts
hey team I can stop tinkering - this Home Assistant has become an obsession, is this normal? Going on 6 months now.
No, it is not normal. You may want to seek doctor immediately. Call Addiction helpline ASAP.
lol
if you hang out in here it's just going to be worse
exactly. This channel is especially notorious!
Whatever you do, don't comment on what you're doing/have done, or the spare parts you've got kicking about
yup
Or order from AliExpress, as then in 2 to 3 months you get a surprise in the post...
WLED is becoming my next rabbit hole lol
Looks like WD40 got leaked from that tanker.
For ... something
Or order from AliExpress, as then in 2 to 3 months you get a surprise in the post...
@clever mortar this is one ive had a problem with for years.
I've only found them relatively recently, and had a few oh, yeah, I ordered that didn't I moments
ive got a stack of Wemos Mini's en route
who the hell wants to wait 3 months for an order to come in?
Those who want to have more money for other things π
I usually get stuff from AliExpress after 2ish weeks
you save like 3 bucks for waiting for 3 months lol
I only order when I can't get my hands on it immediately.
usually I end up paying more because I have less patience, and hate waiting π
in 3 months i would havve forgotten wtf the part was even for lol
I only order xiaomi stuff as I can't find them elsewhere
@forest edge something to think about https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmCQkosIa2k
@last plaza I wish my lawn was flat to be able to do something like that but too many hills and trees lol
lol
@tepid arrow if you tag two more people in the same post, that will qualify you for an automated ban
that would be considered spam - in the eyes of bot
Oh, sorry, thanks for the heads up.
I emailed shelly asking if they had another outlet in the US selling their products aside from the their own online store and amazon cause they want almost as much in shipping cost as the product costs and they replied back with, "just buy more products and the shipping cost will remain the same"
like wtf lol
somehow buying more of one product when you only need one product to somehow justify the shipping costing as much as one product dosen't add up lol
and what's real weird, the shelly 1pm is free shipping yet NOTHING else has free shipping lol
we need those radioshack stores back, where you could walk in and buy
I thought about emailing my microcenter and asking them to carry certain products so i could escape the shipping costs lol
most folks buy in bulk from china and do domestic shipping for profits... those that are in demand
if you can get a an actual store to carry something you can often get it cheaper through them then ordering it online cause they will price match or price beat
microcenter ios pretty good with that
where i always buy the new rpi because even tho the damn thing just came out they will lower the price just to sell the damn thing lol
@tidal bronze kinda wondering why you are chosing cc for streams ..... it maxs at 96KHz/24-bit which is not bad but not the best
@forest edge I worked at microcenter for my first retail job
They listen.
Best of all; they respond.
3 days without wheat or dairy
I don't actually miss them
I just miss some of the foods that have them in there :D
@dull chasm I agree but for whole house that's more than enough.
Makes eating out near impossible
Welcome to the world of having kids with allergies
@tidal bronze its never enough ....need mqa on all speakers
Amazon shipping delays makes life miserable
i need Klipsch Heritage Series Klipschorn for main audio room ...... did i tell you i β£οΈ ya @tidal bronze
Never thought I would go down to this level. π€£
four channel plug and two wires LOL
I so want to run ledfx in a esxi VM. One way or the other going to do it. Testing mic input. π
Lol I have no idea. You would know best π
me and you are prolly the only ones that even know what the hell them speakers are
Those are great units. I am done with audio for foreseeable future.
no you not just for now and i know better ... i gotta get up early NN
Never thought I would go down to this level. π€£
@tidal bronze you seem to have wired the wrong US male plug onto your electrical cord.
Isn't that a 4 conductor jack?
@tough igloo she's tolerating baked eggs which is good
@wet pilot it's certainly a TRRS. Ground, left, right and mic
I assume he's running audio out of another sound card or monitor
@tidal bronze think you could make one of these? https://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/switchbot-link-multicolor.gif
@hushed basalt yep π
@tidal bronze no trrs breakouts on hand?
And I assume Amazon had like a 4 week lead time
I'm still waiting for my boom mic to ship from Amazon US. After 2-3 weeks
I do have breakouts can't find and want to figure something out before zzz π
@forest edge looks great π
I asked if you thought you could make it lol
thats a switchbot hub, but I want it as a notification light lol
i don't need the rainbow effect part, just need it to be able to change colors through mqtt or whatevver
easy with wled
if you can make two i'll pay you for them
cause the shell needs to be 3d printed etc
You can get those housings from ikea
what housing?
oh those look huge
kind gives idea of size
if you can get the wemo/node or whatever inside the housing along with the leds where just a power wire comes out that be awesome
Everything looks huge next to children :D
I remember how big year 7 kids looked when I was in year 1
that cloud is bigger than that girls head lol
Then when you're in highschool you look back and they all look like pipsqueaks
I live across from a school and kept hearing what I thought at first was critters fighting or something, turned out to be some kid playing with his RC car in the dark on the playground
Lol nice
that used to happen with one of my neighbor's drones
then he got a really big drone and it's impossible to mistake it for anything else
now it sounds like the military is hovering above your neighborhood?
Primary schools aren't too bad but high schools can be very dero sometimes
Mob fights, idiots revving their cars and all sorts of crap
@forest edge if you find the base can do it.
the base?
frame/base and diffuser material.
You will have to cut to shape.
i need it 3d printed
that cloud has a flat side
the back of it is completely flat where the power plugs in
cloud base not a problem.
I guess I don't follow unless you mean if I find the cad of the cloud for the 3d printer?
I love how when i google 3d printer cloud lamp it shows me a 3d printed Nuclear cloud lamp lol https://i.pinimg.com/originals/c5/46/ee/c546eeeb857ec47d9fc322bfd8efd7af.jpg
@forest edge this ? π
How does an interactive LED cloud lamp with speakers cost $3,360? It must be really hard to make right? Letβs find out! Thanks Squarespace for sponsoring us, go to https://www.squarespace.com/evanandkatelyn for 10% off your first purchase. Check out the tools / materials we us...
yea i'm fine with basic shape. although i gotta be honest the shadows in that pic make it look like a dust pan lol @tidal bronze
oh yea
You wanted dust pan you got a dust pan π
now are you able to give the front depth so it isn't flat? like rounded like the switch bot thing?
yep simple.
@tidal bronze fusion?
Yep
yea i'm all for simple. i tried for a long time to find something like this premade and i found some boxes but the woman didn't like them plus they were kind of big but the basic cloud was approved lol
small business pro I got ages ago. @last dirge
I don't like the recent changes to force "free" to create a team to have multiple projects
so today my manager tells our QA resource that she's gotta learn a tool called Protractor for automation testing
@forest edge send me overall dimensions you want . with wemos inside
that requires knowledge of Typescript, Python, NodeJS, and the ability to edit the application's views
none of which she has
Sounds like a lot
so I ask him what the hell he's thinking
and he essentially says that he's trying to "add value"
and this is the first business day after they've told everybody they're getting pay cuts
@tidal bronze I wouldn't begin to know quad. I'd like the cloud to be just big enough to house whats needed so only the power cord came out of it but i don't have any experience with a wemos or hooking leds up to one lol
the size i'm talking might not evven need a strip, might just be fine with like 3 rgb leds hooked directly to the board or something for all i know lol
i almost seems like the length is shorter than that lady's hand who stuck it on the wall in that one gif i posted
the problem is gonna be positioning all of that stuff out of the way of the LEDs so they don't have a stupid diffuse pattern
or create shadows
and obviously the power adapter if you're not building your own circuit
oh right the wemo's dosen't come with a microusb port for power unlike the node
actually i thought someone posted they couldn't even find the d1's anymore in the diy channel so not even sure that's an option anymore
they do
Smarter Shopping, Better Living! Aliexpress.com
plenty of fish across the sea
even with the smallest USB charger I could find, the enclosure I built for my ESP21 is still over an inch thick

thick is fine
@tidal bronze thats the back flat part right?
the problem is gonna be that thing being chunky and in the way
That's with 2812 I think with diffuser you should be goot.
Can lay the wemos step below to make the visible base flat. Not an issue π
how are you dealing with the power adapter?
it would have to be thick enough to stand upright or whatever
What power adapter slot to micro usb plugin
What is this for Brian?
can a wemo power 6 leds?
I thought he said he wanted it to plug straight in
no
you'd have to pull 5V from the adapter and use 5V LEDs
wemos is only driving.
would a nodemcu be better choice?
If you want plugin it can be like this
you don't need the extra IO
you sure brian? I thought someone posted a node powering tea lights in the diy channel
and the 5V/3.3VTTL won't be an issue at all with it being that close to the first LED
you're not running pixels off of the node
the USB power input will be enough to do it but you'll have to run that outside of the board
You can plug straight to adapter. Pretty simple
they need to sit on entertainment center shelf quad.
Then run usb cable.
yea that shouldn't be an issue
What you want is something so simple. Don't over think and over complicate. π
you can even get right angle adapters
or since you'll need to tap the 5V, you can just solder to the wemos
downside is I havve like a ton of microusb adapters and cords lol
Literally have a box dedicated to micro USB cables at this point
usually red, white, green, black
@forest edge let me know the size you want. model saved and will work on it once you send dimensions. Gotta get back to looking for my PSU for the bed.
"for the bed"?
ok will do man, thanks @tidal bronze
never seen those qurter coin shaking beds brian?
@last dirge motion control.
Why on did I ask the cleaners to clean under the bed ? FML
that switchbot cloud is 5x3x1.5"
In mm?
120x78x35mm
Got it. π
was about to hack a salt lamp to make one of those chandelier rgb wifi bulbs fit in it but I only have one of those salt lamps and was afraid i would break it lol
so if you could make me two of those things, that be well worth the money lmao
my mom bought me a salt lamp
I've considered smashing it up and using it as fancy salt
@tidal bronze what printer do you have?
Mk3s
oldie but goodie
have you done any tinkering?
I've seen a lot of people replace the linear rails with the extruded rail/delrin wheel setup
Nothing, just works. I have 2 at home 4 at work π
I haven't seen some of these upgrades they've added to this thing
they're getting more complex/smart but cheaper at the same time
looks like that ships with the badass hotend already
I don't have time for mods etc. I would rather be printing than tinkering with the tinkering machine π
the only reason i don't have a 3d printer is cause the thing would collect 4 inches of dust between prints lol
Has anyone ever used skills they've learnt from homeassistant in their professional lives
like using yaml at work?
docker, mqtt, event driven architecture, webhooks, configuration management,
or other things
@hushed basalt yaml at work, docker at work, some of the rest knowledge I have is from HA and I often discuss smart home with customers
Use a mix of yaml and json at work
I'm trying to write a CV
Lots of docker and python
And a lot of skills have actually been indirectly learnt from homeassistant and similar
None of it I actually would put on my CV though
Python and docker are obvious. But continuous delivery , version control, json, rest, mqtt, traefik,
Have all been learnt to support my home cluster
This is the most American headline I've read so far this year
TIL a waitress was tipped a lottery ticket and won $10,000,000. She was then sued by her colleagues for their share. Then she was sued by the man who tipped her the ticket. Then she was kidnapped by her ex husband, and shot him in the chest. Then she went to court against the IRS. - https://www.al.com/news/mobile/2018/10/winning-lottery-ticket-for-alabama-waffle-house-waitress-led-to-lawsuit-kidnapping.html
Tomorrow kindergarten opens
Mine is finally enjoying daycare
No more crying on drop offs
Urgghhhhh I hate writing CVs
Especially when I don't have any in job experience for the role
Yeah, but you have experience that's relevant for the role, or you wouldn't be applying π
It's just a matter of highlighting that
What do you mean, doesn't everybody have 35 years experience in chip design? Intel seems to think so
Thankfully we rewrite our CVs every year, so I get good experience in doing it in different formats and styles
Yeah, I have a batch of "flavours" of my CV depending on which set of skills/knowledge/experience should be highlighted, or whether it's more of a JOAT call
I have a project abbreviated SOTS at work, and every time I see it in my calendar I feel like dropping everything and replay Castlevania Symphony of the Night...
What is a SOTS
Do you think I need to leave Adobe update manager enabled for my Adobe Acrobat XI. Considering it was released in 2012 and security updates ended in 2017.
:D
Can't say, but it looks a lot like SOTN
Ah I see your project has the abbreviation SOTS
I thought it was some sort of strengths and weaknesses performance review corporate mumbo jumbo
On a scale of 1 to 10, how much of your soul are you willing to devote to the shareholders.
What would you consider your weaknesses, and how can we best exploit them.
well... we have something called a SOT-round, where we look at fire extinguish... extingc... fire hoses and stuff...
Do you get to test them, or is it more boring?
"so what is your greatest weakness?"
"honesty"
"I don't think that's a weakness"
"I don't give a fuck what you think"
Hey! I was right on the first try! Thanks google.
Not that playing with fire hoses and extinguishers is fun... really π
More boring. Just state that they are where they should be.
if i hear or see a question like that, i pass
What would you consider your greatest weakness
Yes
Hi everyone I am new to Discord π and I am a big fan of HA. ML engineer by profession and love to help you guys.
Also recently I have written an article in LinkedIn:
π https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/automating-indian-homes-dibyadip-das/?trackingId=F2QLAD7rR7WyjOOKsy%2F0%2BQ%3D%3D
Although, I have written this article keeping in mind about the Indian environment, it should hold true for most of the countries in Asia and Europe. Need suggestions from you guys where I can write more such articles.
@warm hemlock Nice and comprehensive explanation and HA promo π
thanks @worldly fractal
