Night
Man
Do you know how much time and energy I've lost in my life
Because of docker desktop and WSLs iffy mounting
As in mounting windows folders into containers or WSL with global read permissions
Do you know how much time and energy I've lost in my life
the exact same amount ff you were drinking beer and watching tv I would image. lol
How much time and energy I've lost to customer PEBKAC
But very well paid time and energy

I feel like I should have just watched tv
Spun my wheels so much on this project
I'm learning things as I go
But I feel like that Malcom in the middle skit

@ruby mauve well in my country, the backplate of a PC is the small plate many coolers need on the backside of the CPU. And that is the only part called like that. You maybe talk about the mainboard tray? Or the backside of the case itself? However, excuse that misunderstanding. ๐
Are any of you using certificate authorities for ssh at work
Didn't tink say he did yesterday?
@mรฅds pls help
Altough wasn't here someone lately who talked about using multiple user with the Gdrive for sharing and uploading?
I warned you about wsl and file systems
Where do I go to verify my config in the new version?
oh, just found it, had to enable advanced mode in my user profile
Not to #the-water-cooler at least
Wsl ๐คข
What is wsl?
Here , try this:
http://letmegooglethat.com/?q=wsl
Biggest problem with wsl is windows volume mounting
Makes everything globally readable
So whats the problem with World Surf League?
They are not in norway!
And so many linux things won't use files that are globally readable
777 is totally save
I always use that in multiuser environments with strangers
Don't forget to upload your holiday pictures
Also put private keys in slack channels
It's important that everyone has quick easy access to your .pem
How else would you do fileshare with them
24V RGBW+WW ๐
where did you find that?
Taobao, but I'm sure you can find it on ebay aswell
what is it called?
there's just so many of them that are split so that the white chip is separate and yours looks like they are all together which makes it much more useful for a lot of things
If you search for 5in1 you should get the one I have
thanks, found it
You want your white to be different
Two whites really
A better mix would be better, but RGB is poo
@boreal pewter Nope, was indeed talking about the backplate. The metal piece that helps to reduce stress on the motherboard, and.. you know.. giving you something to screw the cooler into :p
Am a massive hardware nerd, so if you are, you can talk nerdy to me ;)
Whenever I put the backplate on, and screwed in the cooler, the system refused to boot. No LEDs in the front panel, and either constant on, or boot loop.
Not been able to find much on it, but one or two posts did suggest that the backplate that comes with the motherboard has the centre hole cutout being too small, and that it might crush some smd components - so even if electrically isolated it still does.. something with that.
Tried with one from my other Ryzen system (leftover cause water cooling), the cutout is indeed way larger, and clears all the components behind the CPU, one coming with it does not - but I think the damage might have been done. It's going back to the store ^^
(Another suggested that the backplate might somehow interfere with the RAM traces, which too is plausible, but that'd probably be bending the pcb, one of the ideas behind that backplate is to avoid that :D)
... I did mention I was a hardware nerd, right?
I really need to stop with these walls of text, my apologies.
I read that there was a fairly common issue with some older Intel cpus that dual channel RAM stopped working if the CPU cooler was screwed in too tightly
@ruby mauve ok but wasn't the backplate -often- cooler related? I think to remember my Noctua had one shipped with which I used. That is just why I mentioned that. So either the cooler could fit by size but the backplate may doesn't, I remember there was a very specific test about coolers for the Deskmini, or the whole case got messed by shipping and the backplate still touches the pins on the board
I did try just putting the backplate on, and cooler on top - not screwed in at all, was the same result.
Which I found kind of curious, as there's the plastic piece around it in order to prevent shorts. It was just as soon as that backplate even approached the motherboard ^^
It is cooler related, the backplate - stress from the big cooler being offset a bit by that backplate - coolers kept growing.
But, even the bigger cutout one I have didn't change anything, same issues. So I'm a bit at a loss, really. Unless the damage was done early on, of course. In the very start I did have it boot once with the backplate just gently put in (not screwed), got into the BIOS - Took a chance with screwing it in (X-style), the second the 4th screw got in it got verticle lines going down the screen and locked up. Got it booting after that just fine though (after the backplate came off again) - Proxmox installed after that point.
Suppose it could be the CPU not liking the pressure?
Before testing things out which would costs just too much time regarding I cost more per hour than a Deskmini, I would just replace the whole thing first. Since you said it came already slightly damaged
I still remember running systems without heatsinks
286-486, no problem, pentium so-so, pentium 3 I could play quake for an hour without a heatsink
I remember the good old days where I was unlocking my Duron with the pencil mod ๐ 800 MHz power
I did boot it without a heatsink at one point - didn't change anything :p They're smart enough to shut down before damage these days anyhow ^^
I only ever attempted that pencil mod once, but didn't succeed (didn't die either :p) Some Athlon 1000MHz I think it was, probably still got it somewhere!
But yah, it's going back to the store tomorrow ^^ I just like the conundrum, trying to figure out 'why' :D
That's a long time to finish kindergarden

Those who fly together, die together ๐
we've had those in trains for as long as I remember. With a lot more foot space though

yeah, I was going to say...on a plane the knees will probably be closer together and alternating ๐
Anyone know of anything selfhostable that's kind of like nextcloud but without all the bloat?
I'd like to access a subset of my local files from anywhere. Other computers, my phone, web interface...
I don't want a database-based store, but I want my files to be present in the servers filesystem like normal.
When assuming the brace position, please avoid the person opposite
@low harness do you use NAS?
Owncloud is now Enterprise only...!?
Don't think so
I've got a half finished install
Yeah, they push the enterprise version, but do a free one
Been using syno for ages but owncloud sounds interesting. Never got the chance to try it out.
@low harness linuxserver.io has a good cloud9 docker container
I'm using it to edit my FORBIDDEN TOPIC files remotely
Of course, requires port forwarding and/or reverse proxy
I was more thinking for stuff like photos and pdfs and such.
I use Plex for the photos, but that's only an option if you've got PlexPass
NAS based apps would do that all day.
Owncloud seems to support the external storage I want, but not as the user root except for enterprise.
NEITHER AM I JAY. I CAN'T ASSUME YOUR ASSUMPTIONS. HENCE I PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION WHEN NEEDED. IT'S CALLED A "DISCUSSION".
Cloud9 looks really cool, though.
I know a few people using Sparkleshare, but they've spotted mobile sync dev work at the moment which is a bit of a pain :/
Yeah it provides a really nice interface for text editing. Global find/replace too
Anyone using fast roaming + minimum rssi in Unifi?
If you want to follow my path to madness, I'm running Minio to provide an S3 store which is accessible over Wireguard. It's acting as a gateway to NFS where my media is kept. On the desktop/server side it works a dream as S3 is supported by a lot of synctools these days. On android the best I've found is FolderSync
for foldersync
Been really digging nginx lately. Also PiVPN, though I should give wireguard a try if I want a third way to remotely access things
Wireguard is now in the kernel, so within a few decades, it should be in the kernel available on android phones.
That'll be nice as the biggest hassle using wireguard on Android at the moment is that it's blamed for all battery woes when the fault lies with the apps opening up an connection. Interesting watching what urls are hit from the far side!
Not surprisingly, Google is at the top of the list, including occasionally reporting back GPS coordinates over HTTP! After that the various chat apps are by far the chattiest..
Having a play with http://skydive.network/ Pretty pretty graphs and ability to report interesting fun on traffic.
openVPN is easy enough
Wireguard is pretty easy these days, more so with the server UIs out there
@rain swift Used to use OpenVPN but have gone fully over to Wireguard. Setup is a lot easier, and it's generally faster.
Have point to point links between servers, and endpoints for phone and laptop to hit.
setup is faster, or traffic is faster?
Both!!
i'd have to see proof of the traffic part lol
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2019/12/how-to-set-up-your-own-nebula-mesh-vpn-step-by-step/ is also worth a look at
I've seen the performance difference myself for WireGuard vs OpenVPN
Running the server on the same Pi, the client on the same phone
Tested before changing over using iperf and just rsyncing files, and Wireguard was faster while using less CPU.
a pi is a terrible vpn server so there's that
Not using a Pi for VPN duties ๐ Atom based box here at home doing gateway duties.
Pi works just fine for mobile use ๐
No shortage of Pis here, I just prefer to use them for less critical tasks. If my gateway box goes down, I can't work from home so was worth putting in a better box.
@clever mortar I'm assuming yours is one of the shared configurations on GitHub?

Hi folks!
Anyone have any experience with putting portable air conditioning units on smart switches (regardless of protocol)?
I moved to a new place without central air and am trying to determine if the model I buy matters -- since they all appear to be digital these days instead of having physical dials. Obviously February isn't the most needed time for an AC (in the US anyway), but I'm trying to buy it before prices jump.
we should smash the restrictions in the lounge and talk about anything we waaaaaaant.
Lmao, to be fair, wasnt obvious when I got here. @chilly nymph maybe #hardware-archived?
Hmm. @rough remnant are you saying my message is against the rules? I intentionally avoided talking about any specific protocol
Fair enough
And wasn't looking for assistance on any specific smart device....which is why I thought here was the best place.
What would be special about the smart switch? The only thing I would keep in mind is not to switch it often, the pump isnt meant to be stop start
As long as the switch is rated for use with your load
The issue is how it's turned on/off. It's effectively the same as plugging/unplugging. Some devices don't handle that well.
Correct, hence dont turn it on and off often
The other issue/concern is I have no idea how these things work, having not owned one. I'm having a hard time figuring out if they generally (i realize every one may be a bit different) turns on by default, or goes into a state where you have to hit the power button.
Omg dont get me started
I work in IoT, consumer IoT gear sucks. There is no standard
Luck of the draw
I owned a home with central air until recently.
I get that. But this is not an IoT question ๐
To get to the core of the issue though -- am I in the wrong place? I am happy to move if so.
Correct, but IoT device makers put no tought into anything like usability and security. And wdym? Unless anyone here objects this ig would be the right place
For instance, my smart plug, has a bright ass blue LED on it. No one thought about what happens when you want it to be used in a bedroom. I mean, what portable AC do you have?
like when I asked a node-red question but got redirected to #automations-archived or asked a zigbee/zwave question in zigbee and apparently should have asked in #zwave-archived. The fact that I get redirected in almost most instances is the biggest reason I'm not very active in this server. Just seem to rub people the wrong way (oops).
@rough remnant I don't own one. I'm looking to make sure I buy the right one.
Effectively, I want to make sure I can program one of my outlets to only be on during certain times of the day -- but want to make sure the A/C would actually turn on and not just go into a standby mode. If none of them would default to on, I probably need to add something like a harmony hub to the mix to turn it on after the switch turns on.
I haven't introduced any ancillary devices. I'm just saying if it defaults to a standby state upon power on, I may need an IR device to switch the state from standby to on
But having never needed to purchase a window or portable AC, I have no idea how they generally work when first plugged in and nobody I know uses one of them anymore either
I mean, how technical of a person are you? Do you want a turnkey solution, or are you the type of person who wouldl love nothing more than to tuck an ESP inside the AC?
Easiest way to answer that is I'm an audio and electrical engineer with some FOSS contribution experience -- and works 60 hours per week. So I wouldn't have a problem with it from a technical perspective, but time commitment ability is low -- if that makes any sense?
So it doesn't need to be turnkey, but can't be overly involved from a time perspective. I'm also not looking to void any warranties either.
FINE, (U have any industry leads job wise by any way shape or form of chance?) I would honestly just shove an ESP into the front panel
Low voltage, connect to the buttons u need to turn on and off or out of standby
Than you dont even need a smart outlet
I hear that. I'd need to solder the leads though, which would void my warranty. But my understanding is also that they have a pretty heavy phantom power draw.
And what do you mean job leads? I'm in New England and I'm familiar with several companies that are always hiring.
Depends on if you are looking for programming, engineering (ME or EE, etc), etc.
Good point about the warentee. Maybe a harmanoy hub or a ESP with a IR LED would be cheaper.. Im in new england, I worked my first time as a full time developer (Dare I call myself an engineer? No degree) and recently left the job. I have a poor experience record but if anyone is looking for skill... I designed PCBs for low cost low power sensors, wrote firmware, wireless protocols, and distributed backend applications.
And power the ESP with wall power, than you can tell if the power went out and the smart switch state reset
Any interest in doing QA work?
Possibly, I'm open to a lot.
It's a good point of entry job where you can show off your ability to branch into EE work or development
Look at Analog Devices or Alarm.com for QA engineer positions
Okay, thanks for the tip
I know people at both places, so if you see something you like let me know and I can forward your resume if you want.
Valid path for electrical, not as much for software dev
I spend most of my time as a software dev, and consider myself a software person, but I do a surprising amount of hardware.
@wet pilot depending on the company. I know both of those companies develop their own internal QA software tests
but generally, yes, I would agree.
True, depends everywhere. Some of software qa doesn't always translate well to software dev
I was viewing it largely as a "foot in the door" thing.
Different tools and skills involved
The more I think of the ESP32 and IR led the more I like that solution, that should be a 10-20min project using Arduino.
That's generally true.
@rough remnant I have a harmony hub lying around, so would potentially use that anyway
Oh there you go, nevermind
It used to control a TV in the living room, but it got replaced with a samsung smart tv, which has an undocumented API and CEC
Oh, thats cool, Im finding that every smart device has a secret protocol. Or backdoor
It often feels like it. Which is both good and bad.
It's why network security is of utmost importance.
Turns out everything based off a certain IC used in IoT if you send a TCP port to a certain port it would open a telnet service with hard coded creds
Though those backdoors have been getting closed up lately
Thusands of IoT devices, none of which actually have the IC, the backdoor was copied along with the IP
@wet pilot see: Harmony Hub
Yup
Whoops, going on a tangent. The api sounds really nice
I'm actually looking at buying a Tesla and that type of thing is what concerns me
since a large selling point of the tesla is the software
Oh yeah, one thing thats slightly reassuring is they covered the basic stuff like blokcing pings. Clearly there isnt a complete noob doing security but with all rapid software development there is always unforseen issues
So, super quick one: I know Hass isn't recommended on a rpi 2B, but how slow is it really? I'm only planning on using it to control a few smart plugs using input from NUT
Just don't
@jagged sparrow there is a no HA talk rule here FYI, and ^
Im running a Pi 3 and its struggling
Real hard
@wet pilot are you talking to me about the tesla?
No, sha
Ah. Ok
Oh yeah, don't use hass on an rpi2. But bring it to #330944238910963714 (hass.io was renamed to home assistant)
Figured since it was under installation that one was more for troubleshooting (And this channel was more active)
got the answer anyways so
Tesla is intriguing but I'm still taking the wait and see approach
I think we need the next step in batteries before they market will blow up
What are you waiting and seeing about?
If they could compete with your average combustion vehicle like a Civic, it'd be viable
I think soon owning a car wont be a thing, Tesla is not a car company, they sell cars to get started on their real goal
If they can fix their build consistency
Ah. I think it depends on your use case. I have a regular SUV for road trips and a sedan for the daily commute. The tesla would replace the daily commute vehicle.
Tesla are apparently still pretty bad at quality control
I drive 70 miles per day round trip, so the lower cost model 3 would actually save me money over the long haul
Yes, the whole paint thing was terrible, and I see a lot about body work being non-semetrical or weird inconsistansies. But boy it would be nice to have
And Im sure it saves a lot of money on gas
What does it cost to charge at a turbo charger?
Less than a tank of gas, more than it would cost to charge at home
I did an overnight test drive last night, and they actually gave me one that was almost empty. I didn't have to pay to charge it, but the meter told me the "full tank" was $9.54
Which brought the range to 320 miles or so
But the town I live in also has chargepoint chargers, within walking distance of my house. No cost to charge and no cost to park overnight.
Thats cool, I live in Maine, its weird to see super charger cropping up everywhere
We're starting to see teslas now
So many where I moved recently
During the summer
superchargers can only charge Tesla, and is the fastest way to charge. But the teslas also come with an adapter to use the other most common connection. It just takes a bit longer to charge. So for a long road trip, less fun. But if it's charging when you aren't in the car anyway, it's actually a time saver over the gas stations.
A lot of companies (like grocery stores) are adding chargers to their parking lot to use while you charge. That's actually what we did last night. Parked at a supercharger and walked into Marshalls.
Yes, hannaford just got like ten of them near me
for the one tesla that lives in maine
The tourist are who bring them
Nice. The supercharger network I think always (or at least usually) charges you directly.
I love maine. I'm one of those tourists. Portland is my spot.
I wondered how that works. Isnt the tesla charging standard open? I feel like a Open and independant charging standard would be nice. Have it like USB-C the car picks from a small range of voltages and current ratings. I live in portland now, Ive always lived in Maine but hi from your spot
You're one of them gosh dang tourists
Maybe kind of. One of my best friends lives up there too though
I mostly go up for the breweries. And bowling.
For the beer, fair enough, for the bowling idk about that man. I dont think I would travel from another state for bayside
@rough remnant the bowling is a secondary reason. Because there is a bowling ally up there that has some pretty great food.
U talking about bayside? The one with a bar on the roof
Hah. I'm not exactly a bowling connoisseur. I just like good food.
You dont have to be, bayside is loud music, wings, and annoying drunks
Im not one for partying and crowds
boots and cats and boots and cats
I feel if I put my cats in boots I would loose a face
or they'll end up liking it. cats are weird
Yeah, thats tru. Shes my little netcat, she sits on the router. Conviently my router's WPS button is on the top and it just causes all sorts of issues with Wi-Fi
lol
have a lot of flat heat generators here, a cat would probably end up in all sorts of bad places
Yeah, lmao. I want to make her a heated mat and a LoRa collar and use it as an excuse to play with LoRa ToF
Hopefully giving her another place will solve my wifi woes
Which, why you would code it so holding a WPS button down just kicks ppl off idk, terrible design

Maybe. Never found one.
Google tells me I'd need to remove the motherboard, but it's worth checking out.
What sort of box is it
Reeeeeeeeee
I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, that they're removing a dead battery
But ahh, shorting out a battery, that's awesome

@hushed basalt It's K190G4U-S02

If there's not a cmos battery slot
There might be a header for it
Or it could be on the bottom side of the board
Check the manual
There should be a battery slot behind the USB ports.
Have one of them which I need to fix up again. The ssd I put in it was a cheap ass piece of crap that died ๐ฆ
Yeah, as I said I found a photo of it on google.

hi all
@boreal pewter
Random update - Got a replacement (even if they wanted to RMA the other one first, instead of just replacing it, sigh). This one has a different backplate, looks slightly different, powered on instantly, detected RAM and everything.
Might've been an older revision I got first time, one with a backplate with a cutout too small - crushing the components behind the CPU ^^
Also, am thrilled by the lack of RAM issues with this Ryzen 2000-series vs. all the RAM issues I had with my 1800X xD

@low harness they need it for the real time clock
Right! Now I remember! I thought of the battery, but assumed it was ok because the system clock was only minutes off.
But we got the power back minutes before midnight ๐คฆ
Still. Clock, sure. But bios settings. Flash is basically free nowadays.
At least if you just need a couple of bytes.
Yeah legacy has a lot of intertia though
I'm guessing most desktop boards use flash nowadays
But random chinese SBC boards, maybe not as common

Years ago I sorted out a fax gateway at my previous job just for dealing with the IEDR (the people responsible for the .ie domain). Meant we were able to deal with them via our automation fun.
A few years later, I started in my current job, and one of my new teammates was ex IEDR.
As it turns out he had build a fax -> CRM gateway in IEDR around the same time as I was doing the opposite :/

The Padawan role (purple) is given to our community members who have shown that they are willing to learn, have shown progress toward becoming a bigger part of our community (a.k.a. a Jedi), and try to lend a helping hand to others when they can. Question for the crowd: are there any numbers on how many people have Home Assistant installed today? 10k? 100k? more?
Two years ago it was about 100K AFAIK
https://pypistats.org/packages/homeassistant and it's equiv on dockerhub might be a good indicator
PyPI Download Stats
HACS alone has some 18K downloads of 0.20.9
Neither pypi or docker hub is a very reliable metric, though.
Would it be safe to say the number is > 100k? 200k?
@clever mortar 100k installs but 60k of the broken in some five layer virtualization hell ?
100K downloads anyway
How many ended up with function installs is anybody's guess ๐
Yeah, that'll be unreliable with some users who reinstall weekly because of... Some reason
how many installs are still functional if they tried to upgrade would be a much smaller number ๐
@ruby mauve glad it works out. I only sticked to the basics too, Ryzen 5 3400g and 16GB 3200Mhz CL16
Hey, where can i ask about SSL Certificates?
@trim solar Depends on how you're installing. I'd look at the two channels under installation first.
Okay, I'll try it thanks ๐
2200G, 16GB 3200MHz CL22 (urgh! But tightened it a bit to CL20 - not messed too much with it yet - SoC at 1.050), 500GB m.2. I didn't want anything too overkill - it is just replacing a Pi3B+.
The RMA for it was completed 30min after I left the place (got a mail), so eh - guess it was obvious at least, so that's something. Even if I had to cash out for a second one, and now to wait for getting my money back.
This one, put it all in, hit power on - Proxmox already installed from the previous one. Up and running in less than 5min <3
Well I guess the 2200g is a re-use from before? Since a 3400g is a very small increase of costs and much stronger. And the ram MAY be the bottleneck then, usually 3200mhz CL16 is really the bare minimum
What voltage is that ram at? CL22 is incredibly bad
1 ๐
2200=3200, 2400=3400. Pretty much exact same tech - Just a small MHz boost.
3400G is about twice the price of the 2200G currently, least here.
2400-3400G got a bit more graphical powers, and has SMT - which the 2200G does not (4c vs 4c/8t).
And yeah, I know the CL22 is pretty horrid. I accepted it due to not gaming or anything like such at all.
The jump from 2k to 3k was pretty big. Dont underestimate that. Just check benchmarks, I guess 2200g vs 3400g could be 40%?
Just guessing
For my PC I do 3200CL14, with tightened timings. Am sure I can get these down further - https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct2k8g4sfs832a
In my defense, they were cheap - and not going for A++ performance atm.
Jump from Ryzen 2000 to Ryzen 3000 was pretty big. However, the -G series both builds on older Ryzen tech.
It's cool, I just pointed the bottleneck out and wondered about the outdated CPU ๐
Normies ๐คข
Oh, I know it's outdated. Again, if I was going for graphical powers, or loads of CPU powers, then I'd probably just gotten a 3950X for my PC, and used my 1800X for a server CPU.
Come back when you have 320 core systems ๐
Anyway, 2x00G is built on 14nm = Ryzen 1st gen. 3x00G is built on 12nm = Ryzen 1.5 gen... though there's a 12nm Ryzen 1st gen CPU now.. Urh.
Well you don't need graphics at all, SSH runs no matter what. For high-end usage you would probably use some G for initial setup and then exchange for a 3600 ๐
Since the Deskmini only does 65w tdp
Aye, I did look into entirely headless, with some non-G CPU. Sadly the A300 doesn't support 1st gen Ryzen (my 1800X :p)
And yeah.. that 1800X is definitely not 65W xD
Anyway. Platform has room for upgrades if I ever need it. I did consider the 200GE, or 3000G - Both dualcores. But, I liked the idea of quad more than dual.
Allright, so using the 100k users of Home Assistant as a working number, I've come up with this: https://community.home-assistant.io/t/breaking-changes-and-their-impact-25-million-minutes-a-year/170700
This topic has come up several times in the past and it quickly devolves into arguments over the necessity of one or more specific changes being implemented in the current revision of Home Assistant. Iโm posting this to open a broader discussion on the impact of breaking changes...
And @clear ferry - When electricity here stops being ~$0.37kWh, then maybe you'll see me with 360 cores ;)
Fixing the breaking changes with each release of Home Assistant is enough work to employ > 250 people full time
Move to a civilized country @ruby mauve ๐
@sullen basalt who says all of us upgrade to the latest version all the time?
Denmark is plenty civilized for me. Just, we got a lot of fees on top of actual electricity prices that is used to invest in green energy ;)
@brisk glen have you seen #330944238910963714 ?
so you can let the debt pile up, but those breaking changes don't go away
I think I now pay 75โฌ per month, 2800kWh a year... thats still almost 0,31โฌ
That is at least in part the point of moving to UI config - to avoid the need for breaking changes
hassio issues lol
I pay โฌ350 ish per month
hail core
I pay somewhere around โฌ0.28-0.33 +/-
I'm north of $500/mo in the summer
Is why I was considering the NUCs (lower ones), simply because of the sub-15W draw.
I'm summer I'm closer to โฌ200isg
โฌ350 per month?! I hope your servers gives you some back ;D
Yup, and it's not a huge burden on you individually. Maybe an hour or two over a weekend after several release cycles
On the other hand, I'm also guessing your heating is near 0.
@ruby mauve the servers is barely any of that
atxblyat the difference in economy is that you don't earn 4000โฌ a month without taxes as an professional about the age of 50, which still would be nice over here. Nothing in regards of many many other jobs here which leave you with 2000 a month
@ruby mauve that's my server farm, and what it gives back is continuing education. it's like a student loan payment that will never go away
I run ha on a vmware photon vm on a mac mini with a power draw of about 5w when I am not on the computer
I have a whole house to power
I need to use some of my cores
Currently I do ~โฌ260ish every 3-4ish months.
I just got access to 33000 physical servers anytime with any os, so my home stuff is mostly just the necessities
HP cloud just went free for internal users?
Internal @sullen basalt
seems like a good idea, not like anyone else is paying for that time ๐
And @sullen basalt, as long as one can afford it ^^
If I did get so many cores / big servers, then I would probably try renting out some Minecraft servers or whatever in order to offset some of the cost.
But yeah, income vs. expenses, the usual :p Mine is definitely not for 360 cores currently ^^ Atm it's just playing around with it a bit, and getting into the whole thing. However, I still do prefer just messing about with the hardware aspects of it.
What do you mean @brisk glen is my Itanium Montecito not good enough?
just because its rated at 45w does not mean it will use 45w

.... @clear ferry you are special

Guys after some advice!
Im using HACS to install custom cards so on - But HOW on earth do i use them!

nice bot that! ๐
Awe. It's cute to see 3B+ CPU usage vs. a real CPU whenever you do stuff on pihole. 3B+ goes all red numbers and things, this Ryzen barely leaves 0.01.
lol
then when you look at the power consumption side the ryzen is all red numbers and things and the pi barely registers.
and windows!
There is that @forest edge! :P
And eh, Ryzens typically uses a lot less power than Intel these days ;) You're so 2012!
+/- those Celerons and Atoms. But eh, there's Epyc 3xx1s for that.
Anyway! I should be able to get this thing down on 6W idle, that's not too far off... a 3B+... maxed out. It's my first time with something else than a 3B+! ^^
@ruby mauve im 5w idle with a monitor asleep
and god know what else I have plugged into this UPS
err 7W using my mac mini 2018

aka Timer Coalescing
https://www.youtube.com/post/UgxhRY3vWp3KoLzlpPJ4AaABCQ < this sucker will be a good zigbee dongle alternative to the cronbee cause you don't have to use usb.
A Ryzen, any Ryzen, should be a fair bit (huge amount) more powerful than that though.
But yeah, I know. I was looking into Intel NUCs and such as well (small Celerons, sub-i3) - cause power usage was one of my biggest factors in picking a device (and storage expandability second, just in case).
But in the end, price of platforms vs. expandability, vs. form factor vs. power usage.. This Ryzen just kind of won (even if I could've gone for a dual-core version.. so.. a touch of overkill).
5w idle is great. However, if I'm able to get this Ryzen down on those 6W idle, then that'd be kind of amazing (am hoping for 10-15W though, to be realistic :p). Seen reports of 6.
@forest edge can you run 2 of them with vhsrp?
@brisk glen run what?
no idea that thing isn't out. I can't even find anything on it than what digi posted. if we were closer to april and if there wasn't a picture of the actual board I'd question if it was real but pretty sure it is

oof
@boreal pewter In fairness to the French, the "Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey" thing is BS. Outside of WWII and Vietnam, they historically have a damn good record!
Yeah it's probably just about germans usually do jokes about france, at least in a community board I'm around to seek very critical content
There lately was a nice useless-knowledge post like: Didyou know a vagina of a bluewhale can fit 5-6 grown up men laying in there. It makes it the second biggest pussy right after france in the WW2
is there a channel for appdaemon?
@boreal pewter Saw yesterday that a French company was selected to supply major parts of the computer systems for the UK's new Type 31 Destroyers.
In Norway we say, avoid cars that start with F, Fiat, Ford and French
๐คข
@fallow galleon you have never been to any mountainous or terrained EU countries then
only spain and the now non-EU country
@strange vapor sounds like UK was looking for anyone who would still lift a helping hand after they left EU. Now who else than France would that be...
Spain can be mountainous, atleast inland
I had a Hyundai i10 in England, that was almost unbearable going uphill
Next time I got a golf, that was bearable with the 1.4tsi
I only traveled thru Spain by train so I only saw the roads in city
Sure for city you might prefer a small car, but driving in the city is useless , most European cities have very good public transportation
Unlike many parts of the USA
When I was in Georgia now public transport would take me 1.5 hours to get to Atlanta, taxi was 25minutes ๐คท
Whenever I see small cars here, I imagine a horrid crash on the highway.
For Oslo it can take me 60 minutes by car or 35 minutes by train to get home
In London the public transportation is so good I would never use a car, but for the countryside it is a must
And a rental car will cost me less for a weekend than two train tickets
@clear ferry you can thank the NIMBYs for that
I envy the train network in Europe
So does northern Norway
We use to say should have let the Germans occupy us for another year, then we would have had train tracks all the way up
Northern Norway has no public transport other than bus or boats
Think the northern most train station of the Norwegian rail is Fauske
Just googled Norway. what's up with having all the coast?
We enjoy fishing, and oil, and whales and seals
Both to watch and eat

which nuc? the pre-alpha? lol
Nuc ๐คข
nuc FTW

Overpriced compared to what? And I guess those are not really meant for people who use triple monitors

they are much smaller than sff though?
Yeah, but so is any other mini computer in a lower price range
I have no need for i7 or even i5 in that form factor
