and looks likes its free too. I got a mini pc that im running HA on via a VM using virtural box. the mini pc came with win10 but i put ubuntu desktop 18.04 on it
AnyDesk is also easy and less of a script kiddy target.
i see. im downloading anydesk now. just wish ii was home so i could put it on the other pc.
If you want to use vnc or rdp locally, krdc is good
Remmina is a lot like krdc if you want something gtk based and supports more protcols
I use vnc mostly with Linux desktop systems, but the only real use for a desktop is for workstations or CAD so I rarely use it except for setup of said workstations once in a blue moon, otherwise I can do almost anything from SSH 🤷
Or xming is good fun too
Still no snow @clear ferry ...
It continues to be true that Flat-Earthers have supporters all around the globe. - Neil deGrasse Tyson.
How...wait..what...🤔
well that didn't take long... i set up remote access with duckdns, let's encrypt, etc. last week. just saw a notification "login attempt or invalid auth from $MyRouterIP"
i have two-factor auth and a secure password set up tho so i'm not worried
i can move this to #330944238910963714 if needed, i just figured this is more networking-rel8'd
That's more of a "who cares"
😦
- Add router IP to IP ban list
- ???
- Home Assistant secured
- Profit
that's good to know though
google wifi router. bought it years ago before i was involved in smart home stuff at all
You can get yourself a good router without wifi and still use your current google router as an AP
i like that idea
i thought about getting that unifi security gateway
but i was told that it's garbage
apparently my choice of networking equipment is always garbage
I really like my unifi edge router
they're like 50 bucks
You're not a multi-billion dollar company that's maintaining a network for thousands of clients, you don't need the absolute best. When people tell you something is "garbage" take it with a grain of salt
ah nice, this one? https://store.ui.com/products/edgerouter-x
Yup
dope, thanks
There is a bit of a learning curve to getting it setup, but I'll help you
if you end up getting it
i would appreciate that, thank you!
amazon has them, and i have amazon credit
convenient
4x nvme drives as cache in an unraid setup overkill?
I think you know the answer to that question
that I need 4 more? :p
and been a crappy day smart errors on one of the 10gb nas drives. luckily on warranty
if have the ER-Lite and i'm happy with it
Edge-OS is that UI only, or does it have a cli?
got cli from what I know
does the edgerouter x pass your approval test ludeeus? 😉
whew
I would suggest if you want to start with the ER to just get the ER-4
can't take another bashing about my router 😉
Even if I use the USG right now of simplicity reasons
WAF kicked me in the ass of too much tinkering with ER
it's 4x the price, and I have no W to A anything 😛
little out of my price range, but thanks
i think i'm gonna go with the edgerouter x
isnt it like 500 price different (nok)
worth the price if you get or have altibox and can use spf directly
imho
@light trout

@late gate not sure if that's directed at me, but i'm gonna use the edgerouter x with my google wifi as an AP
Did a quick lookup, ER4 was about 2000 and X was 600
Zzzzz
Google Wifi? not going to use mesh?
soon enough i'm gonna have a damn networking rack lmao
Pfsense or gtfo 😛
1100 sq ft, no need for mesh
I got a USG, ER4, 5 GW and a pfsense in my closet
lol
none in use
I just loose interest too soon
I do like the unify setup on the usg though. easy to setup vlans etc
just wish for a usg with spf thats not the usg pro (noise like a jet plane)
Using a Debian box with nftables for my routing need. I have got a Unifi setup, but the in your face pushing of the USG in the Controller actually turned me off even looking at it.
Easy vlans aren't fun vlans anyway 😛
More value in the market for someone who knows how to control vlans on 7 different networking products 😛
thats just how you can overcharge consultant services, @clear ferry :p
@unreal orbit why the Edge Router? What is it doing in comparsion to the security gateway?
Security gateway is a Unifi device. Edge routers are standalone routers
And they're more expensive
🤷
@light trout @unreal orbit actually, i just tested logging in to home assistant remotely with bad authentication, and the notification says the remote IP instead of my router's IP. any idea why that one notification showed my router's IP? again, if i need to move it to #330944238910963714 that's fine
Well my plan was a vdsl2 modem (I forgot the name), the security gateway, for now my managed Netgear Switch and 2 NanoHD AP
Because the security gateway is a router 🤷
Did I say it wasn't a router?
Have I said I just don't understand the difference? 😛
The difference between what?
A router called Edge Router and a Router called security gateway 😄
I just told you, security gateway requires a unifi controller. And they're more expensive because they have "security features"
(Marketing wankery)
Ah that was what you mean
Well since this is HA Discord which requires a local server to run HA I just assume everyone is able to host the controller just beside that in another Docker Container
it's containers all the way down
And even if not you can just use the software on a windows PC, do the initial config and then just shut it down (while missing everything regarding monitoring)
@scenic radish HA gives bad authentication notifications for random reasons. Especially if you have cameras. I wouldn't read too much into it
Turn HA IP banning off, it's a bad idea
Because of exactly what's happening
It's Google wifi...
I occasionally get bad auth errors when a camera stream fails to load. HA authentication is overly cautious and has several reasons for false positives
Better than security holes I guess
Oooh Mr moneybag, have cameras
Okay, should I get a black bean? Just so I can say "Hey booboo, switch over to the horror channel"?
Speaking of security holes - I have a...friend...who plays fast and loose with his home security and has never set up SSL or certs or reverse VPN or anything like that, and relies on simple user/pass and non-standard exposed ports. If he were to want to remedy this, would Traefik be a good place to start? Maybe nginx? Maybe something else?
I use and like nginx, but people will tell you that VPN is the only real "good" solution
Goodness...talk about security by obscurity lol
VPN is the best solution, in that it's one thing to secure, and relatively easy to secure well
PiVPN makes it almost idiot proof
challange accepted
That's why I said almost 😛
You can set it up without keys, and a blank password, if you try hard enough
Easier to open 22 on my FW
Ah, the good old enable root login with no password

The systems I've seen, that host massive country infrastructure
That have default password
And haven't been patched for 7 years
Sometimes I wonder how things actually stay up and running
Yup
Hope and pixie dust.
Oh yes, our primary production system ... the login password is the account name. Same for the admin account for the application.
I've heard that more than I care to count
I don't talk about my SQL 2005 server running Windows Server 2003, for fear it might realize it should be dead.
But at least I have strong passwords on it. I think.
🔥
It's ok, what's the odds of you being hit by malware...
@mystic dagger that's modern, I still see NT4 servers
sa/sa is a fairly popular SQL psw
Anyone have a how-to-set-up-VPN link that they swear by, before I ask Sergey?
Run pfsense, use openvpn road warrior setup and if needed site to site VPN
It even has Wizards!
And export tools!
So basically I'll just be opening a single port to the "outside", for me to "VPN on".
Sure, if you want to look at it like that
Networking is my arch nemesis. I can never forgive the OSI model for the death of my boy.
sounds like a layer 8 issue
Windows Server seems like an oxymoron
Is it any good or is anyone who uses it a RIGHT("oxymoron",5)?
Did I have to mangle the line too much for anyone to recognize it as a Kirk paraphrase?
I'm not planning on moving over to SQL on Linux anytime soon...Windows Server works well for what it does.
Is anyone here familiar with git apps / extensions / build scripts to check for the use of certain OSS licenses?
There is license apps/bots that will check, I think there also is some actions in the markedplace
But I have not looked at any of them, just remeber seeing it while browsing
Well today, actually for the last week i've ben having soo many issues..
with what
well mainly with running HA on virtural box. also my wleds decided to stop working too.
Running stuff that isn't temporary testing in virtualbox 🤢
🍿
#330944238910963714 would probably be the place to ask if you have questions
or #330990055533576204 maybe if you're running HassOS in virtualbox (that's possible, rite?)
I know, just kinda venting a little. well migrated over to using this - https://www.amazon.com/Fanless-x5-Z8350-Desktop-Computer-Graphics/dp/B07VN6DF6Q/ref=pd_rhf_ee_p_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=FT6N96ED1BX5TZ7JMZEW from a rpi, and i put ubuntu desktop 18.04 on it set up virtural box, everything seems ok but i cant get it to recognize my xwave/zigbee stick
ah gotcha
i believe passthrough issues like that are common with that kind of setup
Thats what i cant seem to figure out..
@light trout I only found license checkers that require contributors to sign a license before being able to PR. Maybe I'm searching for the wrong terms here.
@clear mirage Install Proxmox, or VMWare, on that box and do it right 😉
@clever mortar yea might just end up doing that.
Or run a venv or docker
Anything is better than what you are doing now
Even if you decide to keep Ubuntu desktop🤢 🤢 🤢
lol
At least it wasn't a venv on Windows 😉
A venv on a Windows VM running under virtualbox
Seems legit
Without guest extensions
Should be able to fit Docker, and maybe Xen in there
Yo dawg...?
Another Insteon hub bites the dust. I'm so glad my company decided to go proprietary with their IOT solution 😑
All his shorter work is good - I'm not so sure his movies worked
I hate mister bean, unless it is Christmas
I liked the sketches, but could never watch more then one episode at a time
More dated, but the Goodies was funny in the day
The Two Ronnies is also dated, but much of it is still funny
Never seen
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNTM9iM1eVw is classic Ronnies
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAmx_XdQky8 is classic Goodies
I have the Johnny English series on deck to show my kids (11 & 7)
Have you introduced them to Mr Bean first to properly confuse them?
No. Hmm. Maybe I should. I'd start with Rat Race but they're a little young for that 🙂
Rewatched some Mr Bean recently, and it really is good harmless fun from a more innocent time!
Would never get approved by a production company today, not edgy enough!
something funky changed after updating suse tumbleweed with my docker stuff, I can't reach any port mapped stuff from outside the bridge network 🤔
all host mode stuff works fine

In this hilarious clip Rowan bumps into something seemingly innocuous while sweeping the stage. This world famous clip sees him play an invisible drum kit. W...
@clever mortar they have split opensuse into tumbleweed and leap recently
Also known as no users here and wonder where we'll land?
hah, who knows, as far as I can tell leap is more stable, tumbleweed is more bleeding edge
I'm daring
Well, you run suse... daring, or crazy... comes with the territory
You're special alright 😉
well, figured it out, the updated disabled ipv4 forwarding and enabled ipv6 on all interfaces,
so a dual error
i have to nat64 ipv6 for my docker servers..
yay /128
the horrible things I have to do
@scenic radish watch it, your Christmas present is hanging thin 😛
Not the good kind of naughty
Lmao
Hello All! Is anyone available for some advice?
Always and never
Has anyone had success running HA inside of a Proxmox VM AND getting a certificate for it (HTTPS access)?
or am i in the wrong area of this channel for that
Tinkerer is away for 40m 53s with a message :point_right: Must remember, don't feed them after midnight!
anyone have knowledge on a esp cw/ww or RGBW bulb thats a little smaller than a standard bulb
would like to put some smart bulbs in the ceiling fans
they are e26/e27 but kinda short
@mystic wraith adapters
This is what I had to do
Get a gu10 bulb and put it in a e27 adapter
I'd go for tradfri over esp where I can though
Hi all. I am new to Hass.io and have a question about cameras. Do you use the platform to manage and run your cameras?
I have read the docs and it does seem to have camera support, but it seems limited.
Should post that in #cameras-archived
Okay, will do.
why tradfi?
is the zigbee more better?
that might be short
tradfri uses zigbee
yeah, is that more preferred to wifi?
depends
IF that bulb i linked is a good size, it fits the bill
just too bad about in in store only
There are tuya gu10 bulbs as well
But may be harder to find one that's not locked out of tuyaconvert by now
Or you can go no smart bulbs
And use a smart inline switch or dimmer
If your local laws allow
Then you can use a high quality good normal LED
smart bulbs are only smart until someone turns off the switch 😄
That's why I have switches next to my switches
So I can switch instead of switching
Switchception
switches all the way down
westinghouse?
not sure who patented the first electrical switch
i don't think it was edison this time
nope, Henry Holmes of Britton
i was right for not edison though 😄
Americans probably just put them in upside down
@strange vapor 😂
that layout somehow reminds me of MCR lol
🤢
hello guys
i have just install HA 101 on virtual machine
and i have Sonoff POW R2 and i want to integrate with it ,any help
We should just give bad advice when people ask for HA help here :D
@split wolf start by reading channel topics and #rules and then find out where the question belongs 😉
@clear ferry ok
as a hint, sonoff itself is not supported nativly, so it will end up being a #diy-archived or #general-archived question if you want to reflash it with #551843800209686539 or #551843558676758569 or if you want to use the firmware as is that is a #609399695466430465 question

@light trout i know but i don't get it until now ,i'll read it again ,thanks
Running in VirtualBox, what a madlad
Better than python venv on windows
🤢
☝ 🤢

I'm still waiting for someone to come in saying they are having trouble with their Proxmox VM running Windows 7, running virtualbox with a gentoo install inside it trying to get hassio to run

So you have upgraded from Longhorn then
Wait no I am still on Foghorn Leghorn
I say, I say, I saaaay
Ah. Longhorn. Those were the days. So much promise.
Yes
So many bluescreens
so little time
but atleast it was more stable than nashville
now that is interesting ,the winds from the US to europe must be strong

I should buy some and ship to people for christmas 🤣
hey could someone help me with a (I think simple) firewall/security thing?
I recently added a firewall to my phone and saw a lot of traffic (different ip's) coming from the hass app, even though the only connection to take place should be [myip]:443
Which Hass app? #ios_and_mac-archived is the only official one
It's unofficial then. I'd uninstall it
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.axzae.homeassistant Oh it got 2 stars, back then I first installed it it had a way higher amount
Ohhhh most 1 star ratings are people not getting how to log in or how the app works
It hasn't been updated in almost 2 years, so that's not surprising
😂
I mean the thing is opensource, so I trusted it
There is a good one that a lot of people use for Android even if it isn't official
let me see, there is another one
You don't need to install something from the play store. Just use the PWA
Ariela is the app, but the PWA is good enough for most stuff
Open chrome and go to your HA address
it should give you an option to add to home screen
if not you'll find it in the site options menu
(it stands for progressive web app)
Wait, pwa as in google?
As in the progressive web app for homeassistant
Ohhhh
right
yeah except that I like to not have to open a browser tab to switch on and off my lights
That's not how it works
You should use automations for that anyway 😛
I'm driving home from work, so I'm not very avaliable for such a discussion 😂
I don't think we understand what we mean
There's not much of a discussion, just some things that are unclear
It's not just a shortcut. Follow the instructions in the gif posted above ^
Genuine question, what is the difference between this and me doing the same but for wikipedia?
Wouldn't both be shortcuts to webpages, what is the difference here
Just try it
please
you will see the difference
Please don't make me post a sarcastic lmgtfy
That's not a very nice answer to a serious and good question.
Not as far as I can see.
But the question was what aspects of PWA does Home Assistant use, and how does it enhance the user experience.
I don't see that question anywhere.
As an iphone user, I can't answer that very well, but I'd guess you get faster boot times, access to html5 notifications and perhaps better cacheing.
it creates a full screen version of your frontend that looks similar to an actual app
you don't see an address bar anywhere
it opens like a regular app
Okay so that's the difference, it opens like a normal url/shortcut, but without the browser ui
thank you
So I am currently playing with both Homey and Hassio and I am getting to the stage where I need to think about returning the homey if I am going to stick with Hassio. I quite enjoy using Nodered and while Homey flows are good I just find being able to see everything across the automation in nodered better. I think the homey is okay and I know some users have issues with Zigbee and Z-Wave over there which I have not experienced myself but I am left a little uneasy that certain feature are missing an "promised" (backup and restore, better Zigbee). Its just soooo hard to decide which route to go down. Homey is expensive so I don't want to flush £329 down the pan lol For those long time HA users how do you find the stability of HA. Is it a system where you have to keep fixing things?
you get an app icon in your app tray that you can move to your home screen
I see
Currently I do not have chrome installed and do not plan to, thank you for the suggestion and teaching me what a PWA is, but I'm still looking for something as convenient as I had before.
So why do i keep getting this error: Component error: packages - Integration 'packages' not found
@willow coral I've been playing around with this.
@willow coral ariela app is worth checking out then, not official but apparently good
@clear mirage you were in the right spot in #330944238910963714. don't cross post
ok
damn boi

They look really well made indeed, just hope I'll be able to connect them
Do you recommend the conbee ii or another stick?

hey guys, do you think it's possible to have a chromecast play a specific youtube playlist via home assistant without a workaround like doing TTS on google home? Like on Spotify you can specify a playlist URI to play; could you do this with YouTube on Chromecast?
dang there are so many channels, don't know in which one to ask since question kind of falls in multiple categories
What's the question?
about configuring some mqtt buttons in the Ui, or well, issues im having with setting them up
Probably #330944238910963714 or maybe #general-archived
thanks tedi 👌
You got it homie 👍
lol I finally solved an issue I yet had a few times by suddenly thinking of the correct cause and with an effort of a minute
🎉 ❓

most boring thing to do.. moving hosts and while there tiding up your config, nothing new - not much gained
try:
do_stuff()
except Exception:
print("Shit happens bro..")
except Exception as e:
import webbrowser
webbrowser.open(f"https://stackoverflow.com/search?q={e}")```
that's actually really cool
I think "vulnerability" is a bit of a stretch here. I guess it's technically correct, but in the real world that's a bit of an absurd proposition
yeah... requires line of sight and knowledge of where the device is at in the first place, among other things
and if you enable the ability to open your garage/lock with a voice command I think you have bigger problems
yeah...
Sound travels through glass, no laser required
plus i'm pretty sure that requires a spoken PIN anyway

hi guys, what about EspHome channel?
what about it?
is it gone? I can't find it
lol

Hmmm, that was easier than expected. The mpd component wasn't reporting back how far into a track it is, so no progress bar. Turned out to fairly easy to fix. Some tests, and will push up 🙂
Congrats @strange vapor how you using mpd? Had about 2 years ago my spin with it. But it was really hard to get it on my speakers
@hearty depot Mopidy on a server with Snapcast Server component, and then a few Pi Zero W with DAC and Snapcast Client around the house.
Haven't quite got the presence detection going yet, but can quickly choose which speakers are active from HA.
Presence detection is next
Snapcast is really damn nice, perfect sync around the house if all speakers are going.
Maybe I have time this weekend 🙈 could you share your config by any chance?
Not exactly a lot to share, but not a problem! The snapcast config is trivial in that there's basically no config other than telling the clients where the server is and giving them handy unique ids, and the mopidy config is pretty simple ini format.
The part you have to put in for snapcast is well documented.
I actually gave Sonos a try before going down this route. Sonos is REALLY nice hardware, and the software is fairly decent. However, if you have a large local library, Sonos doesn't give a shit about you!!
I'm a aweful person - would love to skip the documentation part.
Smb1 is the main reason against an sonos
Yup. Point blank refuse to voluntarily deploy SMBv1 😄
why not get a good avr with zones?
A lot of cabling to do right. Have a decent wireless network which works well with snapcast. Mopidy also does a decent job of fronting Spotify and other services as well if required.
In my case Because there is already decent hardware around
well yes and no ....yamaha has musiccast with wireless
Like @hearty depot I also have lots of decent audio hardware lying about. The speakers in one room are a set of Tannoy Reveal studio monitors which I hadn't got rid of yet, which is probably slight overkill 😄
Underknowledge is away for 1m 24s with a message :point_right: zzzzZ
i would ssay ...but i got kliscph in bedroom and living room
I just wanna say everyone here helping is awesome
What is everyone using on their Pi for antivirus/malware? I finally figured out my firewall and now I am chasing about 10 new his a day inbound and 50-100 new hits a day outbound. Either my outbound firewall rule isn’t working or I have caught something.
Rainbows and sparkles 🌈 ✨
I personally would just backup what you need then nuke the sd card from orbit
Rpi OSs should be pretty dispoable. Considering how quickly consumer SD cards can fail
How to backup your data wirelessly. https://youtu.be/c1qip1-1W9A
Let me show you the method I used to safely, wirelessly, and remotely backup my hard drive.
And add more RAM to the Pi so even if you had 20 viruses they could stay in the RAM: https://downloadmoreram.com
DownloadMoreRAM.com - CloudRAM 2.0
And also check your firewall here: https://isthefirewallbroken.info
and if its not the firewall, its dns
Tried to automate the backup process, but quickly found out that it can lead to data corruption when the system backs up down the stairs
You can easily automate, actually, everything. You just need to know what switches to trigger...
@obtuse topaz I use gitlab and gitlab-ci to deliver new configuration, so, I have permanent back up of my current configuration 🙂
If you're not automating your backups, you don't care enough about your data
I've been managing automated backups for about as long as Python has been around as a language. Never really had a problem with data corruption unless the data being backed up was already corrupt 😉
In Duplicati I also do on-the-fly Backups of HA, which would actually fail in the DEFAULT config. You just need to check some options and it will work. While DB restores of HA will probably be useless then due to data corruption I still have another reoccuring backup (every night) beside my standard versioning in GIT
So double-backup (kinda)
I also have another backup strategy for MariaDB's in Docker which are scripted
Yeah, backing up databases is a little more effort, much like imaging live file systems is a little more effort
There's no shortage of tools for doing those though
I also think about a "glitch in the matrix" setup and host my own personal Nextcloud in a unlimited storage cloud
I wonder if they saw that coming 😛

Hi all, I don't know the best channel to ask, so I will start here 🙂 I am starting with home-assistant and I would like to add some kind of alarm system to my home that can talk to HA. Motion sensors, siren and maybe some other sensors would be great. I am looking at Minut, but maybe some of you have better ideas?
See the channel topics for what's on topic where 😉
For that, #330944238910963714 would be where to begin
@clever mortar Thanks 🙂 i thought that would be rather the software itself, rather than the components it can talk to
Well, this is the one channel where the HA ecosystem is off topic 😛
https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/vis/a010000/a013200/a013285/TESS_south_hires_azeq_no_labels_16K.jpg (205MB 16kx16k JPG of southern hemisphere from TESS, might take a while to open up)
205MB
@wet pilot , I use Pihole so in theory all my dns servers should be known correct?

@clear ferry Slack says 215, and in some cases crashes if you say to load it 😄
@strange vapor send it to all Americans you know, they all seem to have metered connections
Good plan!!
There's this API doc I have to open sometimes
And it's like 50 MB of pure text
Single page of course

Just Google translate it to your preferred language
Sounds like something a HA-developer might do
Ffs... A few years ago they made that info "public" you just have to send in a email to get a API key..
For that exact reason too, they had a campaign where they wanted students to come up with app ideas (with content from the registers)
That's Norwegian companies for you
I had a friend get in trouble for that Tele2 case
Must be 10 years ago now
@clear ferry Deepl doesn't understand Norwayish
Well I have successfully got ha set up on running in ubuntu server in docker.
Atleast it was Ubuntu server 😛
Ah, but is it Ubuntu Server in Docker, or Docker on Ubuntu Server, or Ubuntu running Docker running Ubuntu...
Yea I followed JuanMTechs instructions and really went pretty easy. Now I just have to set everything up again. I would reload from a snapshot but I have a lot of devices that I no longer use and figure it just easier to start from scratch.
whats everyone using as doorbells here ?
Xiaomi button
how does it do on cold weather ?
survived the northern finnish winter just fine
with temps under -30. So it'll probably survive anywhere 😛
Did it get pissed on and beaten up and left for dead in the snow?
Then it would be genuine Finnish winter
rude
awesome, i guess its time to jump on the xiaomi wave
I use a generic 433mhz button
but we don't have weather where I am so I cannot attest to the cold-proofing
Xiaomi 4 lyfe
My way is cheaper and doesn't have to be paired
whats the best place to buy xiaomi products from the US ? ebay? alixpress ? @clear ferry
im assuming i will need a hub and the buttons/sensors
any preferred vendor on there ? ( sorry im just getting started )
#zigbee-archived is the best place to ask for purchasing tips though
👍
Is it in a quantum superposition?
#609399695466430465 would know
Because, you know, nobody ever reads the channel names, or topics, these days

wtf
Sorry for spamming the other channels with this link. My bad. I've been directed to post this link inside of the lounge area.
I'm running a tablet/dashboard survey to compile more information on what folks have set up in their home and how well it works. If you're running a wall tablet or dashboard in your house, can you take a few minutes to fill out the survey? Thanks! And again, sorry for any spam.
That's fine, you can flood it with crappy data 😛
people are going to have different experiences with how good of a tablet in the wall setup you have
like one with ir to tell if you are in-front of it and turns on etc is better than a fire tablet
lol
If a survey have > 4 questions I can tick or mark, I don't even read the questions
43 people have filled it out so far. It's been an interesting ride.
make that 29
*49
I can see somebody has never used Google Forms before
heh
for this kind of survey, you are better off doing a free smart home setup as a testing period
A who what now?
I'm not selling anything
but then again, HA is still not mass ready
or intending to
Mostly I started to compile all this stuff to figure out what others are doing/using so that when I go to buy a fire tablet on black friday/cyber monday I don't buy something that wont be able to run what I'd like
That is totally the wrong way of doing that...
I found a bunch of dashboarding options out there
Step one, identify the requirements for those software
Then you can make sane decisions
identify what you would want in one
do you want the screen to auto turn on when you walk in front of it?
auto turn off when you walk away?
act like a dashboard?
aka use eink instead?
This feels like I don't know what I want, so I must know everything
plus how much power are you willing to waste on this tablet
how much time are you willing to spend setting it up etc
lay out all of the requirements, order by priority, then do some research
treat it like a project manager
and you will be very happy with the end result
Also, pulling a wall of data points doesn't help you at all
Assuming anybody takes it seriously that is
A wall of data points?
that is what your survey is
11 pages of questions, I'm guessing 4 or 5 tablets?
Many of the questions are pointless, or overlapping, or ... well, as I said, you've clearly never done a survey before
Clearly
I tend to like....... windows pro tablets for ease of use
linux if you know what you are doing
never trust android
Or, root it 😉
The survey has 11 sections, but skips to the end if you only have a single tablet
Its designed so that you don't have to fill it out multiple times
so far no one has beyond 2 tablets
at that point, it may as well be a pi with a nice 7 inch display in the wall
more reliable
Or a Google Home Hub type display using Google's interface
That's currently the bulk of our "wall tablet" use
Which is fine, as long as they don't kill voice 😛
99% automation
0.99% voice
0.01% UI
heh
I mean, if the Google Home link fails, it could be days/weeks before we noticed 🤷
I'm more of a fan of local control, less of a fan of relying on google to not kill off another one of their products
raspberry pi with a screen or a windows tablet are probably your best choices
I use cloud where I can
If I didn't have the Home Hubs, I'd have gone Pi + touchscreen
there are also "enterprise grade" stuff but they are stupid expensive
@brisk glen - best choices based upon what criteria?
maintaining them
if you want a nice all in one package and are willing to pay some more, a decent windows 10 tablet with pro to manage the updates is a easy slap on the wall
gross
this way the updates kick off at midnight
only if you have a domain and wsus
@wet pilot not allways
otherwise M$ might just brick your install with a random update
And tablets can't auto-update?
I despise android for something stable
have no beef with rpi though
.... good thing I am rolling in edu keys
apparently if you ever click the "check updates" button, you're on the fast lane
lol rip
Correct, that is even if you have WSUS in your network.
We needed a GPO to revert that click, because users....
I usually delay updates by a week or 2
looks like pi is king then
OSX isn't much better
ya... 10.15 and ios 13 have been... fun
10.15 has been nothing but problems
@pallid basin not soo much on 10.15 with normal macos apps
with uikit apps..... fuckk me
android itself has been decently stable lately. Linux of your preferred flavor is as stable as your choices 😉
^ this
@wet pilot no more ops, we made the UI leak memory in this 6month version
will not fix till the next version?
I've had zero Android stability issues since... well, ever, even on tablets
was that android or some skin thing?
Yeah, rPI with a touchscreen is a decent option. But they only make a 7" kit?
Then again, I'm using Windows as a benchmark...
@clever mortar you missed out on 4.x days
@wet pilot android ui itself would leak
yahn it was 4.x days
I was turned off big time from android
i think that's back when i would root and install cyanogen
My fist android experience was 4.x after a few years with iOS, I had that device for 2months, and did not use android again untill this year
no patches from google on even their phones
things are much different these days
@light trout and is it decent now?
I like it, way better then what iOS would give me
only major OS issue was my fault because of my choices 😉 running beta of 10 and had to wipe my phone to fix it once
@scenic radish 4.x all the way past 4.4
but, beta
things are better now, maybe you're talking about back in the day
ah yeah way back in the day
yah
yeah things have changed quite a bit since the KitKat days
i think the UI is shipped via the play store these days
they've been de-coupling a lot of things lately
thats.. interesting
and thats kinda sad that they have to do that.. in order to provide updates
@wet pilot what?
vendors are shit
some system stuff can be updated through the play store, yeah
yep, they've been pushing as much there as possible
because Sammy and carriers suck and software and should feel bad
not sure what you mean by the UI though. unless you're specifically talking about the pixel launcher
my experience since 2011 has also only been stock android with a brief visit to OxygenOS, so i'm not sure what might vary among other manufacturers
ah interesting
but long time ago as far as software is concerned
that's more manufacturers themselves than it is google
yah
already made a bad choice for looking at hardware at wallmart
in my case, im stuck with apple
people make a huge deal about muh fragmentation with android, but also seem to forget it's primarily the manufacturers' faults
there is no saving me
but "muh fragmentation" is why google has been pulling a lot of shit out of the os and moving it to the play store
i put a 7 year new lease with them with this mini
@wet pilot right. and project treble
treble or fuchsia? 😛
we'll see
i think they're very interested in killing java
that whole mess costed them a ton of money
they should have killed it years ago
that circles back to the fragmentation problem
in 4.x we were hoping they would kill it
keep it there as a legacy in 5x and 6.x
even 7.x
8x should have been java free
heh that's probably gone forever
they didn't translate well
yup
ubuntu phone was a sad death
translate?
you should not translate names
people outside the US might not be familiar with them
i think that's what they said
Watch more TV then
lol
lmao
so fossil just released the collider which might finally replace my pebble
only downside is no microphone for voice reply... but i haven't really used that much anyway
I've never used the mic on my Pebbles, or my TicWatch
pebble has mic?
yeah
the new old ones do
"new old"
new old? recursion error exception
I was soo sad when fitbit bought them
was the only other watch besides an apple watch that I considered
the color eink was amazing
the pebble time series was the first with a mic
pebble time == new old
prebble == old
pebble time round == fancy new old?
I miss the pebble
except my four-year-old PTR is down to one day of battery life
My Pebble still works, but the app I used for the watch face got pulled so I can't use that any more
I hope google revives them now that they own fitbit
And I haven't found anything else I like :/
they won't
I'll be happy with a decent WearOS watch
the pebble was such a good smart watch 😦
@clever mortar neither have i. like i said above though, the fossil collider is actually a contender
The TicWatch is ok, but battery life sucks
I get a day and a half with my apple watch
and $195 isn't bad
maybe I should dust off my pebble 😛
Xiaomi released their new watch
boo
But for now I stay away from watches with less than a week capacity
I love my amazfit bip, 33 days battery life is so nice
No need, I control it via headset 🤷
I wish google would make their own watch cpu and go here
revive the dead wearos market with something decent
I'm now watching the YouTube review of the Hybrid
half of the issue is hardware
@clever mortar link pls
thank
mmmm 60fps
I like the look of it
same
i'm tempted to buy it now but i'd be so annoyed if there were a black friday sale lol
I'd love the bezel of the first, with the hands of the second 😂
First world problems 😄
I would love if they made it almost all eink
added touch like the new kindles
man, that would be one sexy watch
I would pay $400 for a color eink almost edge to edge version with touch
then again, I wish for a pebble time replacement
second one is my choice
dammit i want it now
but i'm gonna wait until black friday
lol
i'm ok with the choice of e-ink instead of transflective LCD (yes, not e-paper) that the Pebble Time used
longer battery life
Yes please
You just need to grab a replicator from the NCC-1701
Ah perf, thx
Yeah but dominos is terrible
Best around me, but will not give me API access :(
But my fiancee likes it so I guess I'm doomed to a life of bad pizza 😦
That's a bummer, why not?
They probably not trust their own capability to have it secure enough 🤷
Ah maybe not
@low harness your city was bigger than expected
not sure what i think about it
@scenic radish mostly what I drink the last year
why?
Sours or berline weisse
important to stay hydrated
@light trout because I have had time for six beers the last year 😛
I want the beer christmas calendar from meny this year
/r/hydrohomies
I like drinking a sour when I want to drink the same beer for an hour...
I usually spend an hour on a beer when I drink weissbier
But that is because they come in 0.7-1l bottles
that's about 3lbs and 4ft?
A quarter of a Mississippi pound
It was actually the third largest city in Sweden once. After Stockholm and Riga.
Riga is in sweeden?
It was back then.
When Thomas was young
Back when Trondheim was in Sweden.
And we all spoke Swedish
I speak pretty well Swedish they say
I fooled a colleague for over a month that I was a swede
From norrbotten
Well. That's easy. Just don't say anything at all, then.
Also you speak more normalized here than I thought
I would have guessed closer to Malmø
@light trout Am I missing something? Apparently I should see Themes via HACS according to this Repo: https://github.com/home-assistant-community-themes/midnight#hacs Can't find it though... Any ideas?
1: Did you read the docs?
2: #609399695466430465 for #609399695466430465
Where is #ludeeus just for pinging you in public
Nowhere and everywhere
Hehe
most days I wonder why I even bother to write docs
Because @clever mortar reads them
Somebody has to
I think he is the only one
Also, they're more interesting than the stuff I read at work
but he it don't need it
I don't read much at work either
That's 'cos I read them already - well, after I wanted to do something 😄
I usually write the docs there 😛
Although mostly informal ones
Because the formal ones are useless
With their American gibberish
First set of docs I wrote for were of a ... relaxed and chatty style. My aim being to write docs people would actually read. My test user loved it, my management hated it and I had to re-write it all 🤷
yeah...
i do some docs writing. we have a guy that takes what we write and makes the customer docs
Once you're beyond a few pages, writing good docs is an art
I should have RTFM, sorry, didn't know you had such a great FAQ and website.
You're not the only one
You are the second person saying that this week
(Who is worried)
I guess with the docs but forgot afterwards?

I'm fat and drinking alone right now
Now I'm just depressed because ludeeus hates me
YOU TOLD ME WE WHERE GOING TO HAVE SNOW
Biobaren?
Smokehouse
That little black box by the train station?
Sounds right
This is truly an amazing home automation platform.
you're damn right
@ebon meteor here, have your own song, on me https://open.spotify.com/track/6ttsH99vfvkAPF3s1tIPqB?si=dfsXbiuQR2S-JHFyGDDw7Q
Now, if I could just get my Vera online, and my MyQ fixed, I’d be at 100%
on you? how generous
I don't often give out personal songs:
