c'mon
still tickled
bloodbath???
intensive petting between gts and raccoon?
older people dont hurt animals i heard through the grapevine
what did I just walk in on
I'm considering swapping out my homepod minis around the house for smart speakers that use my home assistant server rather than the cloud. Are there existing home assistant smart speaker projects already or is this more of a roll your own kind of thing?
#1284966353798697001 reccomendations tag
As with all things, there are solutions for people with one money and three time, and for people with three money and one time 😆
I wonder if this is an esphome kind of thing
hmm, so an ESP can do the thing....I wonder what kind of audio qualty I coudl get out of one. I doesnt need to be Dolby, but anythign about 90s-answering-machine woudl be preferable
yep great, #1284966353798697001
anyone know (sorry not sure where to ask, hopefully is just a simple question), if I HAVE to run the upgrade commandlet in the release notes for HAOS 17, to migrate the storage driver for docker? It says existing users can migrate, but it isn't clear if I HAVE to do it straight away?
thanks!
Does it matter if i update core first or OS first?
In most cases it should not make any difference, but if you want to discuss further then please start a thread in #1284966540617449515
If there is a dependency it will tell you.
Ah thats good to know, thank you!
Is the matter integration working for anyone?
All devices now greyed out after update…
well, it took me a week's worth of free time, but my homelab has been moved from docker containers on my desktop to a k8s cluster on dedicated hardware
1 n150 mini-pc, 1 external HDD, 1 Raspberry Pi 2, 1 Raspberry Pi 3, and 2 Raspberry Pi 4s.
my innovelli didn’t get delivered today
it said couldn’t be delivered b/c weather
the trash guys came and took out my trash tho
And some cool smart switches
Looks great! Say hi to chunky Carl
will do!
I have a similarly chunky Holly
Ill link it tomorrow probably once I have the repo going. Im probably going to polish the card up a bit more but it should be ready to go configuration forms and all!
My dashboard is a little more sparse:
That's much better than what I had setup 😛
I'll get an LR5 when they have a litter hopper and get cat #4 on the board
im honestly kinda surprised at the lack of contributed cards and such
not HASS fault just figured with how many users there are that there would be more people lusting after prettier dashboards
on this note im slightly upset that my litter robot can detect poop better than my bambu printer can detect spaghetti
it's gotten a lot more reliable with firmwre updates in the last 2-3 years.
Nice! I’ve been messing around with trying to get a Liquid Glass-esque style into my HA install recently.
everyone has different preferences
kind of protesting the LR5
don't like the direction the company is starting to go
Thats totally a fair critique. I was just more talking about the offerings of niche cards for various products
don't think many want to deal with the headaches of answering support questions when someone tries using one incorrectly lol
That’s fair. I hope to god that people could figure out this card since all you need to pick is your vacuum(litter-robot) and cat name lol but I’m sure someone would find a way to fk it up
was it fedex?
usps
Hi! everyone. New to community, would like to contribute to the project. Any tips for getting started?
I'm on of those people who doesn't have a single custom card on their dashboard, the way I kinda view it is it's less to worry about breaking with updates in case the card maintainer doesn't update for Ha before I run updates, or if it just loses the maintainer
Hey all. Is there channel just for HACS? Are there still supposed to be header option at the top? Just haveing issues and i want to post in the correct spot.
Home Assistant Community Store allows for easy installation and management of custom unsupported integrations. They even have a Discord server for issues with HACS itself.
And #find-a-channel is for finding a channel
I'm channeling
Hooray 3x unifi e7 arrived in the mail
And the guy installing the wired backhaul is coming today
But my new router isn’t here yet so I can’t set up VLANs
I haven't had a chance to break my network yet
exactly
Lol, I remember the day setting up Opnsense box and having a lot less hair by the end of that day 😂
Why I don't do that at home
🤣
Its 2026, who is calling?
A lot of local businesses around me don't even have a website
I use the app while standing in the building
Apps so you can see the pricing
Hi any fun home automation projects? I'm kinda stumped for ideas
If a Light turns on it uses a random RGB color
Great with motion sensors
I genuinely use that lol
I am all in on adaptive lighting, though I need to work on switches still with this problem and no neutrals.
Withhouse prices and interest rates how they are, that is actually looking like the option
I only have a 50amp service
I'm doing it on my "new" house.
but 50amp is wild, mine has 100 currently and that seems crazy low
I need to double check but that is what I recall from the inspection. House was built in 79
mine was built in 54-- and the electric is original....
it's about a 22k job
Probably worse when you factor in fixing the drywall
I actually don't think that will be significant. It's a 1 story ranch with full access from the attic and underneath in the crawlspace.
I can also do that myself (though I really don't want to lol)
With mine, its 2 stories but a raise ranch, at worst they would have to pull the drop ceiling in the basement for access. Something I kinda want to do anyway and then paint the rafters black to make it at least feel bigger
Run some networking and fiber at the same time
What if our neighborhood uses overhead lines for distribution?
is this considered a perfect pill split
couldn't get more perfect than this tbh
Finally i can call the assist give me all the lights or what ever. And then i have one light identity to control the color and brightness of all the lights
Time to automate it
One day you will ask just because I can should I?
Perhaps oneday i understand what you say
https://newsletter.openhomefoundation.org/dont-rent-what-you-need-to-own/
If I had the willpower, I would create a true federated and decentralized Discord alternative that is on the same level as something like Bluesky and use the EU Tech Sovereign Fund to make it a reality
Matrix, kinda
Matrix is actual garbage
- Your account is locked to homeservers,
- It's far more group-focused (the moderation tools should give it away) as opposed to running communities
- The protocol is a mess of issues, and they have so many problems with spam, where homeserver and space/room moderators just do not have the tools to combat it
- Their implementations are clearly different for the sake of being unique, which makes some of the ways they implement certain features completely atrocious
Making non-functional code changes: refactoring
Frenck violently making non-functional code changes: refactgoring
But why would you not want functional programming paradigms
I’ve spent the last few days setting up matter over thread. My key takeaway from this “adventure” is that MoT is nowhere near ready for prime time.
I’m tired boss
I'm kinda proud of my current dashboard! It's simple, but clean!
It's mind blowing that the house in my dashboard looks EXACTLY like my real house and it was the first try with Gemini. I only had to fix minor mistakes like the right facade which wasn't visible on the single input image, so it's kinda expected.
That's a cute house
Is the entrance opposite the garage doors?
I'm going to crash out if Home Assistant Map doesn't start working 🙃
/me is waiting for the February release to get control over the robot vacuum back
I hope it's in there...
it's right next to the garage door facing the top left
you can't see it in this image
Ohh, hidden behind the house for the most part
it's not perfect, the distance between the front facade and the wall where the garage door sits should be greater
to enter the house you turn right when standing in front of the garage
in this image there wouldn't be much room for a door, but I'm still happy with it
I wish my house was like that. A bunch in my neighborhood have then on the back. Bigger drive, less yard, more hidden
this was the input image I sent to Gemini, incredible result from just this imo (added an arrow which points at the door)
prompt was: Create a cute, isometric house based on this house. It should have a cozy vibe and look like an asset from a video game.
Yea, some places around here got that as well
I just barely have any front yard 🤷
this was the actual first result, for the subsequent tries I removed the IKEA bin from it, which is why it's gone in the previous photo 😄
Are you tiny or is the house on top of a hill?
even the stars and the trash cans were included
I live on a pretty busy road and because of that even when doing yard work I close the garage doors which can me annoying
Oh yea. I live in the middle of nowhere
So I don't care too much
That's the dream, working on it. I want a drive with a gate again
make sure it's one you can control with HA
I still have to fix that. Something about my old ass opener hates my zwave smart opener. It freaks out and will just open and close itself. Connect it to the same two wires of the button too
ass opener
🍑
Even worse. Is it rusty?
But it's more fun that way
Non rolling code
I'm not sure if I would want an old ass opener OR a new ass opener....
both are better than myq
I wouldn't want your q as an ass opener either, tbh
Jokes aside, I have a tilt sensor on my garage door, and the only automation for it is that it is part of my occupancy group. So my garage lights are always on when the garage door is open. I also have 2 motions and 2 mmwave detectors in the garage. Because it's deep enough that I could easily park 2 rows of cars side by side in it if I wanted to. It's more of a shop with a garage door than just a garage
I don't have "smart" locks or doors anywhere. I don't trust them.
I have a couple of rolling code clickers, and a wired number pad for my garage door. It has myq support, but it's old enough that it needs the gateway to actually be useful in that way.. and I won't add that.
I have the same idea. make a discord system that hooks up with wordpress nextcloud dokuwiki (linux desktops etc) to empower any group. and build a new world from bottom up
I mean I don't care to have it hooking into these things, but extensibility is definitely on my mind
just give someone member hass group access and the user has home assistant access
Oh, you mean like a Bluesky account
That you can just modify permissions of when they're in your group
there is a bluesky discord interface mesages from bluesky get in discord and you can reply to them
you can give any discord member of your guid. any access to any hookedup system with discord groups
wordpress editor. nextcloud file access quota doku wiki admin rights home assistant access etc
1424233156319645836
oh
Why can't I be rich and just buy everything?
just go into debt prentending
Okay new unifi APs here….now need to hook up opnsense router when it arrives next week and finally decide how I want the VLAN configured wrt to stuff.
I’m thinking IoT WiFi on separate VLAN with selective internet access to devices only when required (blacklist? Not sure if unifi can do a whitelist easily) but then not sure how I want to connect home assistant (ie if I should have home assistant in the VLAN and just have all devices always connected to it remotely or if I should have home assistant in the main VLAN and set up a firewall rule so it has free communication with the VLAN)
Decisions
I have two iot vlans, one without lan access, but with Internet access, and one with lan access and no Internet access
For the most part the stuff requiring the Internet is a cloud integration anyway, or my LAN can reach into that vlan for local, the stuff that can talk mqtt or other local only protocols get the lan access without Internet and work just fine
Your neighbors must love scrolling past all your SSIDs
Otherwise punching holes for mqtt alone would work
Lol I think I have 4 or 6 ssids
Normal, 2 iot, secondary, and maybe a camera ssid, though I think I decommissioned that
I have 2.4, 5g, cameras, IOT and Guest
When my network goes down my house lights up like a Christmas tree, since wled devices all create their own ssid in that case, and esp squeezelite does the same
I think esphome does too
So all those become like 30 ssids
my kitchen google home is doing that right now :/
I run the combined 2.4/5g settings, most stuff that supports 5g jumps to that
Its left over from before I made the IOT vlan where shitty IOT devices wouldn't handled that correctly
Looking at you broadlink
sounds exhausting
Lol I have my iot vlan as 2.4 only because of that too
When I have time, I will do a scream test to find all the stuff that needs to get moved
I have one ssid that's basically just for my printer because I cannot figure out how to change it's Wi-Fi settings
Lol
Also it's old enough that the driver is no longer supported, so it'll need to be replaced eventually either way
print server
My Amazon driver did that to my light bulbs except he threw it a lot farther
Speaking of I need to decide what to do for bulbs if I’m sticking with thread. The new hue bulbs work with thread iirc
I will not ever support them again given this announcement and I hope they shut their doors on their products because there is absolute no technical reason not to support older hardware. It’s like when Google stopped supporting the first and second GEN of their thermostat. Absolute no reason to do so other than forcing people to buy the newer hardware and creating E waste
I think wemo atleast has local integration with HA
but I agree
Do you have to flash it?
No
These are some of the older gens
The newer ones all have HomeKit or other protocols tho right?
I have one newer one that does. The rest are just WiFi and was cloud
The HA integration is local push
I’ve used it before with a first Gen wemo plug
stupid thing kept having WiFi issues so I eventually just replaced it with a Kasa
I’ve replaced most of it with z-wave but use these for exterior.
yea, zwave / Zigbee smart plugs for some reason are so expensive compared to WiFi, I’m fine with WiFi plugs as long as I can use them locally
prefer Zwave for built in stuff like dimmers tho
Zigbee for stuff like bulbs
TY!
Atleast wemo has a local API, that’s the only good thing I can give them
That I did not know. I have HomeKit integration into home assistant so it still gives me the remote capability
Not as bad as this 😛 - https://9to5mac.com/2022/10/03/rachio-smart-sprinkler-homekit-no-response/
TLDR they removed HomeKit because some people were having issues
all integration is now cloud
I do use that for my irrigation system and did not know that was the case, although I did not have it integrated into my HomeKit. Kind of using Home Assistant as the broker for everything and HomeKit is just allowing me to have Siri integration.
That would be one system, though I would be sorely disappointed if they forced everybody to purchase newer hardware
Wouldn’t shock me, atleast they offered refunds when they removed the functionality
so they somewhat made it right. Would be better for them to release API endpoints for LAN Usage tho
Hopefully that’s the case if they discontinue the hardware
hey hey, how’s everyone doing
thought there was a general channel but seems this was archived
anyway, nice to meet you all
This is that. Just no support here
had my first real smarthouse related failure. my zigbee network was/is dead..
my hue switches that are bound to my lights work. but i can't control from home assistant 🤔
That's how binding works
Directly connected switch to light
i've restarted my coordinator, restarted home assistant. turned off the bulbs that has cause interference in the past. recofigured my coordinator too 😰 still not working
logs are just telling me i am not getting ACK
This is support for #1284966617670881350
Can anyone give mi advice what Hardware to buy to have local zigbee & matter thread?
thanks! gonna attempt some more stuff, and if not i'll make a thread there
#1284966617670881350 with the "Recommendation", "Zigbee" and "Matter" tags.
This is a server for the Home Assistant open source software
say potato
if you're just looking to chat with random people, this isn't the place
perhaps Adult Friend Finder
yeey, everything is working again now
i have no idea why shit broke, or what actually fixed it
it was just in time to be able to turn off the lights in my daughters bedroom 😅
feels like a little wakeup call to get physical switches back in place
biggest problem is she has a wiz (wifi) lamp, one hue (zigbee) bulb and a namron (zigbee) dimmer plug... and then a hue light switch
wiz were the only ones selling a RGB lamp that isn't made of metal. i don't have earth in my wireing and she has a loft bed, so she can very easily touch the lamp
It's not?
Damn I stray into the wrong channel again
we're community members, you know. that means we aren't randoms 😉
cringe aside, i can finally order parts for my DIY jank3000 NAS
Stranger danger!
which consists of a tripple output meanwell powersupply, various C13 and C14 connectors and fuses
I'm really glad I un-janked my NAS when prices were somewhat reasonable
i still need to build my new system.. oops.. 😄
A $65 2TB crap brand ssd I bought less than 3 years ago goes for $260 now
Warms the heart
i bought all the hardware last year just
havent gotten around to finalizing my case setup because I elected to 3d print a bunch of stuff like an asshole. 🙃
About a year ago the 2x 24GB DIMMs that are in my NAS were $145 USD.
Exact same memory today is $415, just shy of 3× the price
ahh the day that openai dies... fuck sam altman
put his head on a pike
fuck that guy. 😐
I grabbed an optiplex off work, i9 and 64GB of ram. a old synology 1U NAS with dual nvme for cache and 4 16TB HDDs and dual 10Gbps PCIe nic
and then i'm pairing it with my old icybox 3.5" enclosure
the optiplex can't give out any power, so i'm solving that with a meanwell unit
so it's only halfway jank
building mine off a weird chinese mainboard + DC-ATX power supply + 24VDC UPS/LiFePo4 battery setup
(by weird I mean its basically a mini atx with a laptop intel CPU on it.. so nice low power)
my current server is some behemoth of shit from ebay thats built off old dual-socket xeon
ironically.. the new build
has the same thread count
lol
and just takes like.. 1/4th the power
while being twice or more as fast..
and having a virtualizable-onboard-intel-GPU that I can drop the nvidia transcoding tesla out too..
proxmox will be whats on the new system yes..
with zfs pools and etc for storage instead of my current 'just add a new drive and point new torrent downloads there' strategy.
i have an optiplex with an i7 here also. it was suppose to become a steamos box or simillar for my daughter
but she might be better off with a laptop
Same boat on the transcoding. Not sure if the Quadro (Turing generation) I had was just horribly inefficient at it, but used ~60W to do a single 1080p transcode. With Intel QSV it's maybe 4-5W, almost not enough to measure
yeah that is the thing.. modern chipsets are so hilariously better on transcoding power its not even a comparison
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRbEVJweKx8
its doable, just tedious

ooo! good old akubukuku or whatever it was
This weekend i need to fix lets encrypt for my things
... reminding me i really need to get off my ass and
setup some rolling backup for my databases/etc
Let's not talk about backups...
quoting my favorite ai-is-stupid article.
And then some absolute son of a bitch created ChatGPT, and now look at us. Look at us, resplendent in our pauper's robes, stitched from corpulent greed and breathless credulity, spending half of the planet's engineering efforts to add chatbot support to every application under the sun when half of the industry hasn't worked out how to test database backups regularly. This is why I have to visit untold violence upon the next moron to propose that AI is the future of the business - not because this is impossible in principle, but because they are now indistinguishable from a hundred million willful fucking idiots.
😛
Why backup when AI can rebuild?
I just had an argument with my gf about an AI generated pic she wanted to hang on the wall
Live Laugh, AI
"Live, Laugh, LLM"
I use raid as backup btw
It was somewhat abstract but she told me she made it with chat gpt and used an original piece for it's inspiration...
What happened to the good old days of creating art with drugs and alcohol.
drug fueled prompt generation
She didn't want to buy the print for 45€ which is fair BUT THE FILE DOWNLOAD WAS ONLY 5€ I worked at a print shop for 7 years ffs and I still could go there and get it printed for free
some of that stuff does not look bad at all
I listened to a podcast recently where a musician spent some time (a week or a month or something) only listening to AI music that he curated (asked for the genre, tweaked the mood, etc.) and said he genuinely enjoyed it. Couldn't tell the difference from real music and what it produced was pretty good
I guess you can listen to and scrobble existing music, or just use it to tell a service what to build for you 🙂
friend of mine linked me to one of those ai generated music things
if you didn't know prior to it being ai, you wouldn't be able to tell
There are telltale signs
It is painfully difficult though, and it fucking sucks
Getting drunk on cooling fluid on a Saturday night...
"oh ai music is real music" pick up an instrument instead of gaslighting yourself into thinking a robot making music is real music that came from the heart 💢
The coolant for our liquid-cooled servers at work is Propylene glycol, but it's dyed the same lurid shade of green as Ethylene glycol car antifreeze.
When we went live with those machines I managed to find a bottle of banana liqueur that was just about the same colour, and invited our account team from the vendor the day after for shots of it 😄
realistically is non voiced ai music really much diffrent than like some of the shit these DJ's spit out?
um..depends on who we're talking about???
'least the dj had fun making it
it's all digital sounds created from thin air.. not like many of them use any actual instruments or anything
An AI can't learn music theory because it can't learn the concept of experimentation
1 for 1 the sound creation is the same. only diffrence is choice of mixing etc
It can learn every concept of how to make music, but if it cannot actually understand, "This sounds good" then it'll never be able to create good and unique music
right but that's what the prompt is for
not like there is some rouge ai out there churning out music
on a whim
several years ago I remember listening to some music history "expert" on johnny dare and murphy or something on the radio.. was talking about how most "popular" songs are just remixes or mismatch parts of older songs before it lol
oh boy... idk how to break it to you
in that same podcast espisode they were talking about an AI song that charted
fully automatic? from creation to radio?
I wonder when HA will get the opposite of "for:" in conditions without template
Like only work if I was in home zone not longer than 5 minutes
there are dedicated ai slop churns that just spit out complete and total garbage onto as many platforms as possible (music streaming platforms, shorts platforms, on-demand video platforms) without any human intervention
Oh, I didn't mean it as "Support" theme tbh
labeled as ai?
meanwhile, back to AI music
He's directing you there because it's already probably possible and somebody can just help you figure out how to do it
of course not LOL
if it's a catagory like on amazon music etc.. then that's not really the same thing
Oh smart
That was only 1% of my brain power, you don't want to see me at 100%

least they reduced the ai slop from the feed on youtube
no?
they literally just introduced a feature that lets creators make AI videos using their likeness
Lefty and Limpy 🪿 say hi
no. it can't.. because learning implies it has some sort of cognition. it doesn't.
its an autocomplete on steroids.
i know
can't help but auto think some kids are responsible for those geese injuries after having to deal with 3 kids here harrassing two geese last year in the school yard across the street from me
It makes money
i'm not sure what happened to his leg or why it's just... gone but i'm hopeful he just was born like this cuz he does walk on it sometimes. He's still fully mobile flying tho and even flys to me same with his friend limpy
they lookin for that free bread
not as a net it doesn't.. 🤣
even in your video you can already see they were thinking, "stop holding out on us you jerk and shell out the good stuff"
Tim, Tom, and Terry are a three man band and Tim and Tom have angel wing 🪽 from people feeding them bread
burn the world to make a few bucks, truly the hypercapitalist way
i feed them duck and goose pellets they love them lol
https://www.chewy.com/kalmbach-feeds-all-natural-duck-goose/dp/311718 i spend more each month on duck and goose food than dog food haha
We are at that point of fun
Started backup to previous version and my internet disconnected at the same time
Now prolly corrupted my HA because of that
It could be worse, you could have to put up with living in a country with no raccoons and a corruped HA instance
But condolences, none the less
oh you have racoons, you just can't find them
Unfortunate, I can't bring Raccoons back, but atleast I was "smart" enough to do daily backups, so we fixed my lovely HA instance
Yeah. Always have a backup and the encryption key.
See, I don't really know my encryption key 😄
You should change that.
Where do I find that at this point?
But I can actually as much google it, but if you have some time, would be nice if you could navigate me there
Shower thought: it should be called the Lovers Approval Factor for the laugh...
You can find it in the backup settings. Save it somewhere safe (not on the same device).
https://my.home-assistant.io/redirect/backup_config/
LAF boat.
Besides lights and plugs. What else can HA manage?
I want to do more but I'm not sure what
I have it checking my emails for things I need to action on - car tax, insurance and so on, then showing me reminders to do so. And much more
YES AFTER 2 days of LLM despiration i went back to basics and provided good working single issue debug scripting. my MCP mqtt websocket bridge now can controll all Lights with one command the LLM send to the MCP.
Please use #1284960456880029707 for posts like this.
My new proxmox server on top of my old proxmox server. 🤣
It arrived yesterday, and when I unpacked it I heard things rattling around inside, and was worried. Thankfully it was just the 4 vibration-resistant mounting screws for the 2.5" drive tray.. they came off the tray with no drive to hold them on...
I suddenly have a good idea of what your living room looks like
Not sure how, since this is in the bedroom. 🤣
Excuse you, but my old proxmox server is still being used. It's just a NAS now. 🤣
If I decide to water cool my NAS, will that make it NAS Tea? 🤔
NAS Tea stuff in the bedroom. Noted.
I told that joke to my wife and she just rolls her eyes and says "It's too early for that shit." then "AND THAT DOESNT MEAN TELL ME AGAIN LATER!" Ahh, she knows me so well. lmao
I'm getting extremely tilted at thread lol
what kinda angle are we talking about
I get it but my creativity is rolling a 1
just for fun sakes , which zigbee dongle are yall using?
I am debating wether I should or shouldn't get one of those fancier sonoff ethernet/poe powered ones,
currenly using a sonoff 3.0 USB
Good topic for #1284966617670881350
yeah one of those
I prefer fine thread
Thin or thick ramen noodles?
the thick ones are udon no?
Nah Udo is my neighbor
Man, I wanna do MoT but so many people with problems....
Some places around me have thicker ramen noodle options, separate from udon
100% obtuse
What presence detection setups are folks using?
I'm playing around with the ikea motion sensors to turn on lights, but I'm finding they aren't sensitive enough for long term occupation detection
Eg, turning on the lights in a sitting room, but not when folks have been sitting still when watching tv

Ahh, ty
Why does my wiring have to be so odd? Everything I do smart home-wise is a mess because of this house's layout and electrical
Pro tip: If you burn the house down, you can correct the electrical and install a proper smart home.
Bonus points if you use the existing smart home to do it
That’s just efficient
Instructions unclear, lit old hub on fire
Plausible deniability
Negative points if Tuya lights on fire. That’s just SOP
wonder whats considered "odd" in home wiring
Someone decided that tucking the neutral wire nut into the wall cavity was a good idea #the-workshop message
that actually looks pretty typical. those pancake boxes weren't meant to hold the wiring, the fixture is. the ground wire looks like a homeowner installation
next you are going to say it was a cieling fan lol
That one, no. I did have to replace a ceiling fan box that was held by drywall screws
lol that is more common than many people think as well
I have some vague recollection that it wasn’t the correct type of box either
Does HA support generators yet or does it still assume everything is the grid?
aw come on it's not even an energy question like that
Yes it is
The real protips are always in the comments
omnipresent
Asking for a friend, if a raccoon wanted to travel to Utrecht for the meetup, who could they talk to about securing safe passage so that they didn't get exterminated on the way there?
Just have them wear a tiny orange jersey and carry a football. If anyone asks, they aren't a raccoon
99% survival chance by the looks of it
much to your disappointment I guesss haha
for a map of all the dumpsters in utrecht use: https://www.mijnafvalwijzer.nl/
a wild raccoon has woken up
No. It's cold
my cat has a preference for staring down my Focusrite soundcard. she'll occasionally swat at the mic level LED
I'm considering aiming the mic straight at her and observe if there's like a feedback loop
@last cedar found one in the wild! (neighboring Discord server)
I used to feed raccoons when I lived in Louisiana
oh nice I can just replace the ping device with one from the unifi network integration
I had to add a wake on LAN device to get it to show up though
I'm trying to add some smart lighting to my house. My only existing smarthome products are all wifi-based, so I'll be buying hardware rather than trying to integrate with existing stuff. Do I want to be looking at Zigbee, Z-wave, or Matter Thread? I'm in the US, my home is single-story drywall-over-2x4s, and I'm a competent electrical DIYer so I prefer hardwired devices compared to stuff that sits over an existing switch.
My immediate use case is I want dimmable kitchen lighting with the ability to change color temperature. The existing setup is a 6-bulb fixture with an additional single-bulb pendant light over the sink
I'll let you decide if face up is better. This was what I got treated to when mine was snoozing next to me on the couch last night
#1284966353798697001 with the "Recommendation" tag might be able to help you.
It's clear that that cat is resting after drinking your blood
thanks
You are a good person
Utterly adorable omg
I should reboot my mac every so often
Also the home assistant app on mac is nice
jesus my RWL022 are chewing through batteries
:v
Also I bought a bunch of Rodret remotes now that they're $4
and I'm gonna buy more zigbee shit from IKEA
Long live Zigbee
fuck Thread!
ok I'm dumb
I have no idea how button entities work
I guess I'll stick to device triggers for now
oh, TIL ZHA doesn't do that
Z2MQTT does
heh
? i show them still at 10
Canada here
interesting. thats a huge price drop. they marked for clearance?
last chance
You should check in person. They're being replaced with Thread based ones
Also I hate thread 🙂
i been using a rodret for the past few years. it's pretty solid especially when you bind it
Bind it?
all this is for #1284966617670881350
I installed innovelli white switches and fan modules on all my room fans
Time to make ten thousand automations
There was an extra unhooked up switch that used to control the fan so I put an on/off innovelli there
I could hook it up to control the fan again or I could make the other switch control brightness AND fan and just use this new switch for other nonsense

also I guess that means it’s thread for bulbs too whenever I get bulbs
I'd use it for the fan and adaptive lighting for the lights temp and brightness
No light temp adjustment. It’s one of those fans with LED modules so I can’t really (easily) swap it out
It does have brightness tho
Anyone elses nabu casa cloud down. (Remote Access to HA)
I have a vpn so i can connect regardless
Please don't cross post. The place for this is #1284966439702499400
I bricked my nfc tag
HOW
With a brick.
Is there no text channel for home assistant cloud?
No. You can contribute to the existing post
My message was put in here before that post was put up
ok
you first posted in #beta, which is why I mentioned crossposting
or here and then beta. Neither is the right place
All good, was kinda panicking a little bit at the time trying to figure out whether something broke on my end
Well... After failing to make a physical button turn on a smart bulb I am now starting to question my venture into smart home tecnology 😂
That is the kinda thing a bunch of people do, If you ask in the right place you can definitely get help with it. 🙂
Yeah I think I managed to get over a few of the hurdles but then I looked at the time and decided it was going to have to wait for another day 😛
Just have to get my head around the automation setup
Found some good guides but I guess the UI has changed quite a lot since then and I'm not helping myself using another language so will just swap to English
yeah, depending on what your doing guides can get out of date at different speeds.
I unbricked my bricked nfc tag
Did you throw a brick on it?
no but no
Humanity is saved. We build robotic bees
do they collect oil?
Don't tell the US
Bees pollinate
so they spread oil?
I dont think its the combustion robot type
Don't discriminate internal combustion bees.
What about murder hornets?
I think hornets have no problem using a combustion engine.
how would they do it, they have no thumbs
You need a thumb for push to start?
Push to start? Don't we all use Beeless go?
Well now that I have my room fans and fan lights hooked up to home assistant I guess I should finally figure out voice control
New task acquired
Probably a weekend task
Anyone have any insight on TrustTunnel? https://trusttunnel.org/
Is this something that is actually different? Is this something that would be worth running as an add on on HA server?
TrustTunnel is a modern, open-source VPN protocol that delivers fast, secure, and reliable VPN connections without the usual trade-offs.
The real question should be "why?"
That's good question too?
Their animations don't really make sense given how TCP works…
i guess they're proxying tcp connections rather than passing tcp through as-is, which can potentially improve throughput in some circumstances?
marketing!
oddly enough, after reading the protocol document, their claims of being undetectable by DPI/TLS-interception don't even hold up since they're using the HTTP CONNECT request method which is only used by HTTP proxies, so is likely to be blocked by DPI firewalls that are set up to prevent people from using VPNs or external proxies. Also, the security of the protocol depends on the HTTPS connection not being intercepted… in which case there's no reason to actually do HTTP inside the TLS connection at all.
so yeah, I don't get it.
I mean RFC1149 is also not something a normal DPI will detect
Which one is that?
ip over avian carriers
Sorry I am just being anoying
The animations are indeed weird
Not even about tcp in tcp
But about which node sends the tcp response
Which only really matters if the high latency link is between the VPN server and the destination
(i suppose, to keep things on topic, RFC1149 could be adapted to nocturnal mammal carriers too)
it feels a load of marketing blabla
and I also feel a little bit off offense taken by the name they have given us. Its almost like the trust meus bro meme
While I was being funny I burned my pizza
we have a saying; god punishes immediately
Thought about it a bit more, the only way this protocol makes sense is if the driving factor in its design is to make it possible to mask the server by having the server look like a normal http server.
which is probably why they need 4 hops
(basically, they're using the combination of the HTTP CONNECT verb with a basic auth header as a sort of "door knocker" thing to conceal the fact that the server is acting as a vpn/proxy, while allowing it to respond to other http requests like a normal server)
really should have use the UPGRADE method instead of connect tho; that's easier to handle with reverse-proxies.
you know what ai is great for? summarizing billions of lines of logs
The joy of not producing billions of line of logs in the first place
So the solution space for AI is solving problems that computers created 🙂
need ai for the ai
or AI created. You know the shit code and all
ai isn't even good at summarizing logs tho (but it can be ok at writing tools to do deterministic analysis of logs)
i disagree but then again, maybe some log structures work better than others
I've seen some use cases for, given a reasonable sample size of a log, finding some particular log entries that might be interesting or indicate problems, and writing tools to analyze their occurrence in larger logs.
nobody wants the expense or time of actually sending large logs through an llm :)
in my case most stuff allows me to download the logs as a txt or csv file and gemini allows you to just upload that file
then just instruct to pick apart the stuff you need
i wouldn't be surprised if gemini is doing some sampling and tooling behind the scenes for you then, to reduce the amount of llm processing needed.
“Gemini, what the hell did the customer do this time?”
what the hell did i do this time
Never blame yourself, only the customer. If nothing else, find a patsy

I hate thread
I hate matter
Zigbee >>>>
also motion sensors are the most annoying thing for automations
fight me
I need a mmwave sensor.
anyone got a spare one :p
Quick, someone sneak up on pugge! They don’t have motion sensors working
Dang and here I thought my motion sensor stairwell lights were the best
Pir works every time for them, just have one bug where they turn off in a weird edge case that happens like once a month
Well stop standing on the edge
PIR only?
Yeah, it's a stairwell, you go up and down
or off the side
what you got? Skynet?
2 levels above skynet.
I thought PIR became a secondary sensor few years ago
Anyone running a BT heart rate proxy?
Sure, it’s built in to my watch 😉
back to first for me over mmwave when I got the dust machine of a dog
So your watch can send the HR to multiple devices simultaneously?
If I turn on my old phone then probably
-# it’s just an Apple Watch
Oh we are talking turnips and cilantro here
I wonder if my old Polar HR sensor with the chest strap can send out BLE or only pair directly 🤔
Now we are talking.
Yes I was shit posting, but now you have me thinking for real ya jerk
H10?
I think so. It disappeared into the void of a move long ago and emerged recently
I know it can pair via… ANT? To the closest exercise machine at a gym
Been working on a proxy to re-transmit BLE HR from strap to watch treadmill etc etc.
So one source of truth at all times.
Hmm
H10 uses ANT and BLE. I am working on BLE.
That's sub second?
Yeah I’ve got an H10. Haven’t used it since long before I got an Apple Watch. Maybe even before old Fitbit
Oh and want to send mqtt as well for TFT display 😆
you should have your outdoor lighting pulse in unison with your heart
That's gonna be boring.
“Awfully late to be working out…”
Have an idea to get Gemini to coach in real-time. Laying out the ground work. 🤪
No TTS for the late night coaching, please
TTS hell no.
Or adjust the BPM of the music to match
You playing with claw?
not yet, likely a next week issue. I do have a bunch of n8n stuff running though
Ravercise
its still dirt cheap compared to MMWAVE
and if you don't need prescence, just motion, it works great
if you need both esp32
and no one can give the "but you need a device" line. You have your phone
Mmwave is cheap. Actually cheaper than a good reliable Panasonic PIR
well no after you factor in the 3d printer to make it look nicer
Why on would you 3D print? So many ABS enclosures to get it done.
All my esp32s are in 3d prints, its smaller, more device specific and I have 3 3d printers now
I used to long time ago. Waste of time for me now and can never get the matte textured finish.
I don't know. It sure takes time though new ones are pretty quick. Its just a oh I need that thing. Now I have the file saved and never run into them discontinuing the item, if I need more, or break one
Mine are in wall behind blank plates. Very few enclosures anymore.
I don't have enough poe run for all that.
huh, link?
I am referring to DIY, sorry.
lol, i diy too, though its nice having some of my stuff go over zwave/900mhz instead of yet another wifi device (i have 60 devices on my network, not against adding more, its just... more clutter at times)
this for your automation to auto cancel your reoccurring order of cardboard bread upon heart stop?
@clear ferry you never said you got pulled over by the police?!
He got towed afterwards.
not so sure he is still alive. all those estrogen pills he was taking may have taken it's toll
so young, and already turned to a life of crime. we should ban GTA games now.
He is still alive.
@last cedarget out of my barn! that's for the stray cats that been coming around and not for you!
is that what cats look like where you are from?
I also identify as a stray cat
pointy ears, tail, four legs, full of crime
That's a cat
(checks notes)
- ❌ Featherless bipedal (human)
- ❌ Passes Voight-Kampff test (cybernetic / android)
- ❌ Operates lawnmower (granpaw)
- ✅ Symbiotic / parasitic relationship (house pet)
yep, can only be a cat.
I think the advice to not avoid heating rooms you don't use, may be bad advice. The theory is that you will leak heat to the other rooms anyway, but your heater will run more efficiently if you use more radiators
I switched to this approach, but based on my real-world data I am skeptical that whatever gain in efficiency makes up for the increased losses from unused, unnecessarily warm rooms
of course my data is not perfect because the weather is not identical, but it's enough to make me skeptical
The advice never really is about not heating them but about heating them significantly less
There are many more factors involved, with well insulated homes and modern heaters I don't think this matters at all
in my non-insulated apartment i will not be heating rooms i do not use
that’s just throwing away money
It's almost impossible for it to not matter, the heat loss is directly proportional to the heat difference between outside and inside. the colder your room, the less heat you lose
Unless your house is so insulated you no longer need to run the heat at all, it will always matter
technically you also lose heat to some minimum amount of air exchange with the outside to not suffocate, I guess
But the idea was that having more radiator surface to work with allows the heater to run more efficiently, which makes up for the increased loss
I took their word for it but now I doubt
It heavily depends on room size and insulation compared to the remaining heated rooms
Even where this thing is in the building will make a difference
Meanwhile if you can simply supply exactly enough heat as is getting lost, it won't get better than this
It will, when you are losing less heat, by having colder rooms
You are aren't really loosing less heat you just are shifting where you loose it with this being very localized
If I lost as much heat to my neighbouring unheated rooms as my unheated rooms lose to the outside, surely the unheated rooms would be warm without even having the heat on?
I wrote that wrong
I can't be losing more heat to my other rooms than they are losing to the outside and they must be losing less to the outside when they are colder
The heat doesn't stay in your heated rooms. It graduates everywhere colder which is both the outside and the inside.
Wether or not you loose more depends on how large the surface area between both is
And as there is usually far less insulation between rooms than the outside..
There are proportions where it works and where it doesnt
My cold rooms are a buffer between me and the outside, to heat the buffer itself up to stop losing heat to it makes no sense to me, I stop losing heat in the room I care about, only because I gave (wasted) my heat to it directly
Yes, I am already assuming they are just thin concrete walls with no materials meant for insulation
but these rooms also will never be as cold as the actual outside
I don't think it is possible at all that you don't end up losing more heat, the only question is whether the loss of heat exceeds the loss of efficiency from not using more radiators
and personally I just would be shocked if the efficiency went that far down
I wanted you to drive me around on the trailer, ffs
run you over with the trailer you say?
The cheese tax!
Task failed successfully
Daily I hate thread
Also I just learned battery powered mmWave sensors exist
Holy shit
That solves my biggest issue with them
And gives you a new one. Batteries
I’m ok with that
Who voted no on this. GET THE BAN HAMMER
Switchbot uses 2 AAAs apparently
Aw. Switchbot’s sensor is Bluetooth only
So close.
But it’s $35 🙃
Oh wow it’s matter support is really bad.
So you thought he drives?
I second this
Who would say no to giving a good boy cheese
I need more Zigbee sensors.
Also I need to setup Z2MQTT
And fix my thread setup.
Who was it that kept telling me to install Proxmox on my N95
sounds like overcomplicating things just for the sake to overcomplicate things
Didn'y you tell me to install Proxmox?
certianly not me
The thing is I have HA in Docker
VM's are for weirdos
I run a bunch of vms and servers, so I'm certainly a bit outside the norm for users
HA in Docker, but no matter server because that's only default in HAOS
in this server? no
? docker matter server
but ditch matter.. it's trash imo
keyword "crap"
fight me
My proxmox runs on a Dell mini PC with haos, web server VM, Maria DB, and a few other vms
HAOS is bare metal on a n100, Unraid NAS is running all the ARRs and plex, another n100 is running a backup up plex and a few other critical services in backup, AI server. Dell mini pc is running proxmox and a few more services. Then a full unifi stack
n100 for haos alone is way over kill
Thanks, Capt.
N95 here :v)
I've consolidated down to a mini PC for the NVR, a second for vms, and then the giant nas, saves on the power bill
how expensive is power where you live?
I have plenty of resources for ha to use on the VM, and plenty more available if it needed more
I can run a full Xeon workstation 24/7 and not notice
It gets up to 115f in the summers, so every PC watt used is actually a few watts to include cooling it with ac
It adds up fast
46c. jesus fuck
Also my state has the power grid of a piece of toast that's more fragile than tissue paper
Texas?
So I pay up the nose for sub par service too
here in Ontario we have nuclear power
just wrap copper pipe around it and circulate into a tub
and we're working to expand it.
How could you guess
1cm of snow crashed your grid
Hey don't blame the snow, the generators didn't want to winterize so they could save $20
lol
And then when the grid went down, they could charge whatever they wanted, so they made massive profits!
Good! Though I'm jealous af
so why not harness the anger of pure matter
They've stayed the same here for a decade.
even with AI expanding in Canada and more datacenters going up, everywhere with nuclear has basically stayed the same.
we're actually going to be the first G7 at this rate to deploy SMRs
canada not cutting those data centers cost breaks maybe
they certianly get deals here and the public picks up the slack
yes but AI goes brrrr
Think I can run an extension cable up there for some cheap power
I got like a 100ft cable, that oughta make it
bypass the meter
lol
lmao
a mate of mine wanted to buy an old grow house apartment which had some shenanigans going on
lol
hard pass
I still think about this on a weekly basis btw.
Also we left our granny cart at the top of the stairs last week so that the wheels could dry before we put it away, and I thought of a very Home Alone-esque scenario where I could launch the granny cart down the stairs at any marauders
anywho someone came to pickup a free fridge and asked for money for fuel since the free fridge didn’t fit inside their car
now i am salty and still stuck with said fridge
Well look at you, a giant bragger
LOL, no
we're full of uranium here in Canada
last time someone ran over a goose we had an explosion
probably ate too much uranium
also I'm convinced to use proxmox.
Has new home assistant broken matter server connection? Anyone have issues? My devices all turned Unavailable, I deleted them m, reinstalled Matter Server and now I can’t add them back…
How did you even get it to work lmfao
matter is such a clusterfuck
isn't it the dutch way?
to not give money for fuel or to not ask?
I have a stupid question
The Belkin Connect Thunderbolt 4 Core Hub optimises your workstation with a compact 5-in-1 Thunderbolt hub solution to connect all your devices. Buy online now at apple.com.
Has anyone considered this to cluster more mac minis together?
Since this lets you turn 1 port into three at the cost of some latency
I am pretty sure they have to directly linked (not sure on the specifics_) which is what limits the amount you can cluster due to port count. If you could cluster more by using that or something like it then one of the usual suspects on YouTube would have done it.
I'm not sure they considered it due to the insane cost
It adds on the cost of half a mac mini for every three mac minis you want, when a 10gbps switch is like, $50
What is the goal of clustering it?
AI inference
Apple have starting doing loaner systems for this type of thing for them so cost is not really a major factor.
in this situation: neither lol
its not sane to do so
Not everyone is doing a loaner setup. Most of them bought their own setup
the mac mini clusters are dirt cheap
$500/mac mini, a cluster of four is just $2k. For the people paying $200/m for Claude Code's highest tier it makes sense
Even if you account for electricity, you come out ahead
M4 mac minis are insane
You can get a gmk tech AI ryzen with 128GB of ram for $2400
still can't beat mac mini in energy efficiency. also M series chips are first class support with LLama.cpp
They just work
1 pc vs 4 and cluster will kill that efficiency
It doesn't.
A mac mini can peak to around 65w, the gmk tech is 120w. mac mini idles at 4w, the gmtek is 8 - 14w, even at it's lowest it's double mac mini
mac minis are insane value if you ignore macOS making a terrible server OS
Like atrociously bad.
X4 your mac power draw
Remember, you're not running full tilt 24/7
You still are comparing 1 to 1 but you are clustering. You need to x4 your math plus the hub
Still more power efficient with the macs.
A signle gmk can run LLama 3 8b Q4 at around 42 tokens per second. A signle mac mini does the same at 70.
at half the power draw.
There's a scaling wall you hit faster with mac minis, but then you can just jump to mac studios
You can hate apple but the M series is impressive.
Dumb, I don't hate either. I am pointing out you can get the model sizes one 1 device vs the pain of trying to cluster them.
you start to get diminishing returns fairly quickly with clusters specially at a home setup scale. having a single powerful system tends to quickly overtake in tops/watt
There's no pain in clustering thanks to exo
I agree. But then you have to consider performance/watt
and perfromance/$
No, I have solar
you have solar, most of us don't.
I have nuclear.
For americans I think it's mostly gas turbines?
My house is connected to grid solar and turbine.
Why is america obsessed with gas? I don't understand
Like dryers run on gas.
that sounds like a recipe for disaster
Solar didn't exist when most of the power plants were built.
nuclear has existed for >50y
its not really as dangerous as it sounds
That's a different issue, americans are scared of nukes from 3 mile island, its dumb
I forgot I'm close enough to Niagara falls to get hydro
you have just as much chance of your house catching electrical fire than some kind of gas fire let alone explosion
In a dryer tho
isn't most of Niagara ca and not us?
A box full of highly flamable materials
Yes
? they are vented
And they rarely catch fire from the gas itself, the heat builds up in the lint trap usually.
Electric isn't immune to that
just soooooooo much better
It just scares me. With electric if the dryer malfunctions and draws too much power the breaker protects me long before things go south
disagree
how would you know? it scares you...
I have one vent from my dryer thanks to electric
heating wise we moved to electric and it's surprisingly good
before we were hydronic (condo)
Gas is more efficient than electric when you're talking about heating. Does it really matter, no but electric does take a long time to heat compared
I don't think that's true. Electric heating literally uses all the energy in the form of heat
you lose a lot of the potential energy in gas
Go check your dry times
gas is just cheap
30m
our washer gets our clothes almost dry
you want your clothes in the dryer on the lowest temp possible for the shortest time of they wear out faster
unless you actually used one for more than one cycle you won't really understand just how much better it is
have you used electric?
also @warm helm if you're solar, doesn't it make sense to use more electric stuff?
Or is gas just that cheap where you live
gas stoves I could see some arguments some have about temp consistency but many still prefer gas to eletric in that as well
gas stoves I agree with, it's just the AQI issues they cause
They're supposed to be nicer. I haven't cooked much on them.
I'm a coil electric stove, and my partner wants to get a glass top one again
I might surprise him this valentines day and buy one
House was built in 79, I didn't get a say. Yes, I am moving to electric where I can but I am not replacing a dryer or heater for it
There's a LG one he really likes
Do you live in a cold state?
Also dryer I would replace if it's cheaper than gas
I doubt it. For some reason gas is stupidly cheap
normally I would talk shit about LG but these days, it seems every applicance compy sucks unless you actually shell out for the stupid expensive stuff
I've never had a LG fail
yes and I hate it
its not
It seems like appliances are more prone to failing in the USA
I also WFH so laundry is only needed every few weeks, it would take years to offset the cost of a new dryer
you know I looked that shit up.. it really isn't. it's the company not the country
A lot of things in the USA are strangely different than they are here in Canada. Like lack of federally mandated immobilizers in cars.
That's one I can't understand. It adds like $100 to the car's price
some countries will have a slighter tighter QC but even those get the same problems and some I haven't even heard of happening here
like euro vs usa
they get some weird faulty scenarios
we may get BYD cars here in Canada now
but it's the company
Seriously? I've never had a single LG fail
they're also the most boring basic appliances though
you are just lucky
well less bells and whistles helps a ton
Like if I had to say one brand I aboslutely trust for quallity, it would have to be Dell
wait till you get a smart fridge
I've never had a Dell fail me.
Was a terrible idea before they went private again
I bought Dell monitors becuase I know they'll be just average, but reliable.
I like Dell stuff
I was literally going to then samsung was like "HAHA you bought a $4000 fridge? HERE'S ADS!"
and now I refuse to buy Samsung appliances.
I only own a OLED TV from samsung.
the ads are the least of the reasons to not buya samsung appliance
even thier tv's are gone down hill
oh god. someone is using an electric snake in their toilet above us
I really hope they're gentle and don't break the pipes.
I don't want a flood 🙃
i've always felt samsung kitchen stuff was crap though. sure they look fancy but that dosen't matter when your stuff stops working lol
benefits of a house, It is breaks its me
Our condo building has had an average of 6-8 floods per year thanks to home diyers
there's a unit down the hall that had extensive water damage
interior pipes clay or something?
we did a veiwing. They tried to cover it up and their shit DIY plumbing job
No, idiots.
cast dosen't break that eaily
They tend to do things they shouldn't. Like installing their own shower and cutting corners on waterproofing
and if it's pvc then it should be fine
Don't challenge the idiots in our building that think they can cut corners DIYing plumbing
This condo sold a few months ago after we bought ours down the hall
A week ago they had to rip the walls in the hall open.
as long as the pipe doesn't spell out a word
They flooded inside the walls facing the hall. $25k premium gone for our condo
Sellers long gone.
I hope we know where they moved so we can sue them.
Fuck them.
This fucks our condo fees because "hurrr why would I pay for proper materials when I can save $50!"
🙄
Your building association should have their info
I hope.
They glued a fake foam tile thing to the wall in their living room to make it look good in photos. Horrid in person
The bathroom vanity wasn't a wide one, so they glued a chunk of marble between it and the wall.
They redid their shower and it showed. There was extensive water damage everywhere
They had no idea how to do plumbing but insisted on doing it
Seriously, it was a full gut.
nothing was saveable
