Yeah, that's really the only thing I automate with mine. Otherwise it already knows when to go into heat/cool/fan etc.

#

dumb thermostats just bleed you money. Heating is a big percentage of your total energy bill

last cedar
#

I can see an arguement that it may be nice to automatically reduce internal temp when you are away for a long time, but I also have heard it can take less energy to maintain a steady temperature over heating and then pausing and then re-heating

#

Not sure who has done the maths on it, though

primal laurel
#

I am, my master thesis is about the maths

solar zealot
last cedar
#

(I am so sorry)

solar zealot
#

Stuff like turning it off at night just makes sense for classic radiator heatings as they use significantly higher temperature deltas

forest edge
clever mortar
#

Depends more on the materials the home is made from - modern lightweight construction is a lot quicker to heat and cool than stuff with thermal mass

#

My current home is a lot larger than the last one, but the last one was brick and stone everywhere. Heating or cooling it took time. This house, no time at all.

forest edge
#

we we don't got many mud huts around here

primal laurel
solar zealot
#

It makes pretty much no difference at all, the pre heating temp of the water is marginally higher than your targeted room temperature

#

It automatically regulates based on the water return temp, there is nothing to do at all

primal laurel
#

you're wrong, sorry

solar zealot
#

I don't think the data gathered over the last decade for my heating would say so. If you believe spending thousands on thermostats is something you recoup with your setup that's fine aswell but it most definitely doesn't for what I am experiencing here

clear ferry
#

I'd say heating cooling is 15% of my energy bill, 20% is servers and 25% is water heater, the rest is regular day to day

forest edge
#

too many showers or just keeping the pipes from freezing?

clear ferry
#

with 2 kids and 2 adults a lot of hot water is spent per day

primal laurel
#

here about 80% of the total energy consumption of a household is natural gas. Most of that is heating, a small part cooking

clear ferry
#

yuck gas

solar zealot
#

Cooking on gas seems to be pretty free

forest edge
#

gas is still very efficient

clear ferry
#

I prefer my house not being a potential death trap

forest edge
#

then you should disconnect the power

solar zealot
#

Why would that be any more dangerous than any other of the things around you

#

It's like extraordinary safe

It's not like it's soft tube rubber pipes like on grills

Or at least, it shouldn't be

primal laurel
solar zealot

Gladly

primal laurel

moving that 80% gas consumption to electricity is... challenging

forest edge
#

ac, dryer, water tank and optionally oven

#

those 4 are better off gas always imo

solar zealot
#

What madness of a dryer would run off gas

Sounds American to me

forest edge

solar zealot
#

That's what I would assume but I am not old enough to know

#

It's been electric since I can remember and it turned to heat pumps nowadays

forest edge
#

I forgot that side of the world likes to use your indoor radiators etc

solar zealot
#

It's probably like the "dryer vent" thing that we don't have around here

#

Maybe that's also the reason for why they don't show up here often enough to know

clear ferry
#

When I grew up we had probably 25 indoor electric radiators

ours used to be centrally controlled with room sensors, so you just had to set and forget usually

but I haven't seen electric radiators in over 2 decades now

you're not sitting on Europe's largest gas field https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groningen_gas_field

would it make more sense to interpolate sensor data at the sensor or at the visualization

primal laurel
#

I have studied the paper this was based on by TNO (dutch research organization), it's quite interesting. Because of the E/W orientation you reduce the peak power at noon but you match the typical residential consumption pattern much better. Aka you increase your self consumption without changing your behaviour

#

Which is exactly what we need here, if it wasn't for our 100% net metering bullshit

young sigil
#

Still watching it but far from the equator it is common to stand up solar panels more than the optimum angle. It reduces the energy collected in summer (when there is generally more than enough anyway) but makes collection in winter more efficient.

clear ferry
#

Wonder if there has been done any good studies on midnight sun and solar panels

#

because very few people have solar panels in the arctic

#

but we also have no sunlight in winter so

primal laurel

We've been fitting them to the North side of buildings in Antarctica (vertical).

In the winter, the best angle for my panels is straight standing up anyway 🤣

orchid rose
#

Not sure why but the guy rubs me the wrong way. I've only seen a few of his videos but I guess it's the "undecided" part that triggers me. It's the Internet, tell me if it's good or the worst thing ever!

forest edge
#

i'm all for it. a lot easier to deal with panels installed like billboards than on your roof lol

#

only downside is, in my location they might get blown over more frequently

primal laurel
orchid rose
#

You can run these in an angle as well and they get better results in some (most?) environments

#

they catch the bouncing light from the ground and the atmosphere with the backside. Works best during spring etc

#

But it really sounded like a gimmick for the most part but I'm sure there can be some usecases for them

primal laurel
#

Well it reduces one of the biggest issues with solar. Which is that it's peak output power occurs at a time when nobody needs electricity

orchid rose
#

Yeah that's fair, but you can get less overall so it depends on the battery capacity then

primal laurel
#

We don't use batteries, too expensive

#

But also getting more affordable

orchid rose
#

In that case yeah it can definitely have an advantage

solar zealot
#

I've seen a couple of fence and wall no tilt installations around here

glacial knot
solar zealot
#

It's a bit weird of a usecase for home installations as a fence is usually something that exists as protective boundary

glacial knot
#

fences are social contracts

primal laurel
glacial knot
#

if it's hot, ACs good to run 😂

primal laurel
#

Yeah but there is some flexibility in how you run it, same for heat pumps

prisma briar
#

If I were on a variable rate connection I'd run my AC really low during the day to get my house cold enough to not need it at night

primal laurel

Yeah that's more or less the idea. But you can model the building thermal physics directly and run an optimization over that model to get an optimal curve

I was saying this to someone recently, my mother's family are Scottish (strike 1 for cooking ability), and also teetotalers.
Their cooking was where flavour and texture went to die.

real frigate

My grandmother used to make “spaghetti” when I was kid. Her idea of it was just undercooked spaghetti on a plate with heated up tomato “sauce” (which came from a can) and somehow she always managed to burn the sauce. 🤣

prisma briar

One of my grandmas made really bland food because my grandpa had a stomach issue, I don't think I've ever seen my other grandma make anything more advanced than a sandwich.

ocean oar
#

But worse than that, as well as boiled-to-death vegetables, largely unseasoned meat dishes, and all the other atrocities there is just nothing making it a cohesive meal.
You got a protein item, a carbohydrate item, and whatever else, but they never would be cooked in ways that would complement one another.

Not enough media players.

#

Amateur hour 🤣 (kidding)

prisma briar
#

I made a media router that lets me go from sources to routes to sinks, this exposes all the controls those various entries have available in HA.

I can enable/disable (play/stop) any of them, I can send next/previous/pause to sources if they have a small script running on them, I figured out how to get my TV to export a PCM stream over the network and now it's a source, it supports a Windows driver that exports PCM over the network for audio from Windows, I added RTP PCM support for audio from PulseAudio. It sends audio to PCM renderers or has an MP3 stream available over an HTTP api.

#

I can play MP3s to sinks so I can play sounds from them in automations

#

So now I can have like an automation for 'go to bed' that disables music in my office, enables it in my bedroom, sets the volume really low, then turns it off after an hour or so

#

Or 'take a shower' that turns on the exhaust fan in my bathroom and routes music there

#

Or since I can get output from my TV now I can go to the bathroom and route my TV audio to all the speakers on the way and keep listening

real frigate
#

That’s actually pretty impressive! But, who listens to TV in the shower? Music I get, but TV?

prisma briar
#

I was thinking more like I'm watching a move with other people so I don't want to pause it but I need to run to the bathroom during it

#

I'm in favor of the economy.

forest edge
#

we went from actually getting back almost half of what we invest into our homes back to less than 30% with an upward trend

#

at some point if the direction remains the course

#

your new home will be worth less than what you invest in it

#

I guess if you buy a home and never add or anything to it, you might be alright

winged obsidian
#

Gotcha. I'm not a house flipper. The money I spend on my home isn't for the purpose of being able to sell it to someone else. It's for the purpose of living in it.

forest edge

winged obsidian

I've owned my home for a little over 25 years, and have remodeled. I did not remodel because it would increase the value of my house to someone else.

forest edge
#

we want something back in our investments

winged obsidian
#

Contractors are motivated to reduce your ROI as much as possible by increasing their prices as much as they can.

winged obsidian
#

Perhaps ironically, the term for that is "economic rent"

#

Where did I come up with the idea that contractors are motivated to charge you as much as they can? Is that somehow not obvious?

#

The more they charge you, the lower your ROI will be. That's just math.

forest edge
#

the idea they are motivated to reduce your roi

#

they are charging what they can get away with.. (back to the breaking point comment)

forest edge
#

having a why dosen't make it better tho lol

winged obsidian
#

Maybe we should start with some basic economics here. The estimate you were unhappy about was to apply some siding and rebuild some steps. What should be the ROI? The proper ROI for rebuilding steps is $0, because it's not an investment in the first place. It's maintenance. Those steps have been depreciating in value since they were first built. The value of your house should go down as it accumulates various bits of depreciation. Roof, painting, furnace are all big examples. Houses sell for more with fresh paint, new roofs, and new furnaces. The difference is much bigger if you replace a 25 year old roof than if you replace a 2 year old roof. Whether your siding would be expected to have a positive ROI depend on what's there now, but if it's maintenance to replace existing siding then it shoudl be another $0 non-investment. The first article you linked is idiotic because it didn't figure that at all.

forest edge
#

roi is the thing in whole

#

if the maintence cost as much as the original or even half then there is a problem

winged obsidian
forest edge
#

and the age of your roof does impact the roi

#

I skimmed. my bad

winged obsidian
#

Correct. That is because the age of your roof is the major factor (barring tornadoes etc..) in the value of the current roof.

forest edge
#

was bouncing between trying to skim your wall of text and reading something else

winged obsidian
#

That's not an ROI. That's maintenance. If your roof need replacing, you're performing maintenance to bring your house back up to the value it had before you lived in it.

forest edge
#

correct

#

the problem is the percentage of roi vs cost of job

#

if you paid 16K for a deck in 2018 and a contractor wanted 10k to replace a small portion of that 5 years later

#

while the overall value of the deck hasn't increased by much

#

it's an issue

#

at some point the cost of labor increasing while the value of target lags behind as ongy stated becomes a real problem

weak musk
#

I am so glad I left to grab lunch

forest edge
#

yea I don't blame you

#

my biggest issue is that wages haven't gone up that much, materials while they did out of control are now settling down so these inflated numbers are just pure profit and not even justified

winged obsidian
# forest edge it's an issue

Hear me out: what if the "issue" is the economy was hurting when the deck was first built, and now it's not. So now contractors are getting paid better.

forest edge
#

I just addressed that

#

the inflated numbers are just profit.. not even going to increase wages or anything

winged obsidian
#

So the skyrocketed, but didn't go up that much?

forest edge
#

8ish or so over 4 years is a skyrocket

#

but that dosen't warrant the job cost

#

I have had 4 general contractors give me a quotes.. the overall prices are all over the place and I even asked for an itemized quote which non will give you for obvious reasons

#

is the cost of the job was based on just wages and material cost

#

the numbers wouldn't be so vastly diffrent

#

they are flat out taking advanateg of the situation like that article pointed out

#

which I personally have an issue with

#

as I stated before. i just don't get how they can get away with it

winged obsidian
#

Ah, I see. I had no idea that you're a socialist. I suggest moving from Misery to Europe.

forest edge
#

and as I stated already. at some point you yourself will have to deal with the result

winged obsidian
#

(Apologies to all the Europeans reading - but I doubt he'll go anyway)

forest edge
#

guess you'll just swallow it with a smile on your face

winged obsidian
#

Nah, we got migrants out here working for cheap 😄

forest edge
#

but I like how you are fine and even defending the process only because you don't have to "feel" the impact

winged obsidian
#

Interesting but incorrect understanding of what impacts I have felt. FWIW, I had a new deck put in last month and in the past two years had my furnace replaced and replaced both the fence around my yard and around my father's. All of those jobs were expensive.I didn't use the lowest bidder on any of them. Both fence jobs were after I delayed for 2-3 years because the material prices had spiked. Gambling that they'd go down again worked out well for me. At least two of the high bids I rejected were definitely at the "I don't really want to do this job" rate.

TL:DR: Contractors will charge what the market will bear. If you find yourself getting a lot of "I don't really want to do this job" bids, it's either a market failure or a buyer failure. If it's the former, it's a transient problem. If it's the latter, it'll be ongoing.

as you already stated. your highest bid was probably around the same as my lowest lol

Last week I visited a friend who decided to retire a couple years ago. He loves woodworking. His new toy is a laser cutter. Already had the CNC.

I limit my traveling to a minimum during summer. Aggravation is not worth it.

winged obsidian

My business trips tend towards Phoenix and Charlotte. Neither is a great choice in summer.

i meant to go biking tonight, but its still too hot and gross (almost 30c today, which is hot for here)

Chima's I've walked by a few times and been intrigued. Will give it a try. We've got an STK in downtown SF, but I can point you to better steaks out here.

tidal bronze

So Duckworth's serves impossible burger eh? Interesting

real frigate
#

Oh, there's some great steak places here... but most of them are either outside of Charlotte (Epic steakhouse in Fort Mill) and a couple of places in like NoDA or South End.

Funny - apparently unrelated: https://www.epicsteak.com

^^ I'd say no better than 3rd best steak, but absolutely best views.

I’ve been to Alexander’s. FANTASTIC steaks.

I am planning to try out this Vegan sushi place if I can get a reservation.

Big day today!
Inovelli (zigbee) canopy fan controllers installed and working flawlessly in 4 ceiling fans-- I can get true states in HA now, yay!
All automations have been updated-- moved from "device" actions to actual service calls.
Replaced a set of z-wave blinds in the dining room (that the motor failed in), new set has a quieter motor and is more responsive than the old ones.
Did one of two glue ups on the guest room side tables I'm trying to get finished before July.
Managed to get a quick bike ride in.

Not too shabby.

tidal bronze
#

I am interested to know how you managed to automate the bike ride

Much better to have the local yokels crawling over each other for nickels, but never let them rednecks ever earn a dime,

forest edge

so the news is fake?

tidal bronze
#

People don't live news. When you have nothing to do, that's the only real you get.

forest edge
#

tell you what. when you live outside of a bubble in the same state then you can contradict the news that disagrees with your fantasy lol

tidal bronze
#

You think I live a fantasy. I am very close to reality than you will ever will be. Hence we don't have any illegals here in California. I would prefer you not use that. I take offense to that. We would not be nothing without the labor force.

weak musk
#

Anyone else do something cool today?

tidal bronze
#

I don't care about ICE. I know how we are the largest economy in the country. Numbers matter. Everything else is just, everything else.

forest edge
#

lol

#

you've established you don't live on the same plain of existence as the rest of us but for the rest of us.. facts matter lol

tidal bronze
#

That's what you think. I can't change that.

forest edge
#

its what the world thinks

tidal bronze
#

Tell you what, rather than complaining about an already established economic giant do something in KC to make things better.

forest edge
#

i'm trying but for some reason certain Californians wanna try and compare their "cheap labor" to everyone else's costly labor and think there is no room for complaint

tidal bronze
tidal bronze
forest edge
#

you know.. you were right. you would be nothing without that cheap labor force to exploit lol

tidal bronze
#

Whatever that makes you feel less jealous. Let's go with that.

forest edge
#

lol jealous

#

ironically in this one scenario I am a little. think it would be cheaper for me to pay for bus fare and room accomidations to bus some labor from california or texas and then send them home in 2 days then the average rate going for locals here lol

tidal bronze
#

Guess what they will do a better job as well.

Do you have to do anything to stabilize the wood?

dire spear
#

stabilise? in what way?

weak musk
#

To prevent cracking/warping

dire spear
#

it wont crack or warp

#

ive stepped on them and throwned them at the wall and they dont break. its kinda impressive. **provided you use appropriate wood - not pine

weak musk
#

Pine is nice for burning

#

I just wasn’t sure if you had to use resin to stabilize any of the wood. Pretty common with small turnings using exotic woods.

now fusion is annoying me cause im trying to use an alternate tool for the pink ivory caps in the video (square vs pointed).

#

bleh

#

there is a super basic path ever software has called a projected pocket. you take a shape, and project it to a 3d surface. Does fusion have it? no. that would be too easy

So I needed a very small RP-SMA antenna for a Bluetooth device. Did a bit of shopping around.

Whaddaya think, perhaps too small?

forest edge

I actually bought some 2dBi ones too. Same straight design but about 35mm long

#

But I wanted to try this, if the lack of directionality pans out then it might actually be useful

ocean oar

Yeah, that +/- a few millimetres of length

forest edge

a little too short imo lol

Indeed that is what made it interesting

As it's for a thing intended to be used interactively

So avoiding any issues of what angle you have to be relative to it is possibly useful

curious how it performs, I dont expect much

an adapter with a pcb trace antenna will probably perform better
