Few apartments/houses don't have any laundry facilities, but laundromats are still around, yea. Lots of apartments have shared facilities where you have to go to a different level/building to get to the washer/dryer though.

At that time the apartment I was living in only had 3 working washers and they were always in use.

You've got a weird image of the US if you think NY and LA don't have poor people

tidal bronze
prisma briar
#

That's like assuming Oslo doesn't have snow

forest edge
#

laundromats are handy in a few situations. especially when your needing to do a whole lot of clothes quickly

clear ferry
#

Their ratio of poor to rich probably outnumber other cities @prisma briar

#

At least in monetary total value

prisma briar
#

Most laundromats also do more than just provide a washer and dryer, they have commercial services for businesses, you can go drop off 100s of pounds of laundry and they'll clean and fold and press them for you

glacial knot
#

we have some of the laundry services around
But I'd have to go to the city (i.e. poor people territory) for a laundromat ๐Ÿ˜‚

clear ferry
#

I think there are two dry cleaners in Oslo, but I haven't seen it in any other cities

In the US poor areas are often adjacent to wealthy areas is more what I was trying to get at, so blanket painting any larger city as 'wealthy' or 'poor' is silly.

#

And most people are in between wealthy and poor, I'd say

forest edge
#

still think sams club is better

tidal bronze
#

I don't know man. I drop in now and then.

#

Maybe I am biased

forest edge

well walmart is going full on amazon at this point so it can only improve i would think

prisma briar

I was gifted a Sams Club membership two years ago by a friend, they've renewed it twice now. I've literally never went because I'm not driving 20 miles to go to a bulk store when I normally only keep like a week's worth of food on hand.

#

Not even sure the last time I was in a Walmart

tidal bronze
#

These days they have some random hard to find single malts. That's more important than anything.

prisma briar
#

(I did tell them I've never gone, but I guess it's bascially free for them to renew for me)

forest edge
prisma briar

If it was nearby and not a hassle to just get to the store, sure

#

solar zealot
#

Do you guys trust the microsd snake oil of high endurance versions

glacial knot
#

only the Nintendoโ„ข certified ones for my switch

solar zealot
#

In theory they advertise a couple hundred tbw

#

But there is nothing to compare that to

#

I can't believe that they have multiple flash tiers and that they only put the good stuff onto the much less common high endurance lines

forest edge
glacial knot
#

it can also be over provisioning

#

but you only really get the data if you are a large customer/partner

dusky plank
#

some claim "industrial" high endurance, and that comes with some own specifications which they need to comply with, so there has to be some differences

solar zealot

they are targeted for a use on dashcams and video recording

I don't know why, but I want to see someone try to make it out of one of the long-ass HPE BladeCenter PSUs

clear ferry
#

Those are great PSUs

#

Except for the brownout issue

#

I probably replaced 500 PSUs proactively due to that

#

Also the C7000 PSUs are tiny compared to the XL675s

#

If memory serves right

#

They have the weird AC DC plug

ocean oar
#

This one?

clear ferry
#

Yeah that fucker

#

The C7000 with DC power was also fun, very popular in Japan, torquing power plugs

ocean oar
#

We cooked more than a few of the longboi 2650W PSUs because in the Apollo 6000 systems, if you installed the power shelves per HPE's documentation, the PSUs got no cooling.
Turns out you can't put the air exhaust on the top then also tell people they can install it with another device racked immediately above.

#

๐Ÿ˜„

prisma briar
#

Totally going to make an adapter to hang like 5 of those off of a ryobi tool battery

ocean oar
#

I'm annoyed by how expensive the 1st-party DeWalt USB-C adapter is.
Don't want to build my own, but also don't want to pay for theirs.

#

I mean I also have one of those big-ass battery packs which has an 1800W inverter and two 100W USB-C outputs, so I'm pretty covered

prisma briar
#

None of Ryobi's official ones have anything over 30W PD

#

I have an 800w inverter that has a 12v plug and usb a and usb c, but still only 30w on the pd

#

It's got 12v though so I just have a car phone charger that'll do 65w in there

ocean oar
#

Weirdly that US version only comes with a 65W mains charger, the one we get here has a 100W

prisma briar
#

Yea, I've seen that one

#

I toyed with the idea of adapting my Ryobi battery to a Dewalt battery for one

#

But I'd really like more than one USB-C charger

#

I have six ryobi batteries and two chargers so I'm not super worried about it charging, I just want the outputs to run my phone/tablet/whatever off of

#

And my tablet doesn't charge+run off of 30w pd

#

Nor does my work laptop

ocean oar
#

I've wound up with eight batteries (two 18V 3Ah, four 18V 5Ah, two 54V 3Ah) and four chargers

Central + HP?

prisma briar

Central is heat only, heat pump does heat and A/C.

solar zealot

50-60kwh a day in heat energy seems about right on a coldish day

solar zealot

tidal bronze

What's your furnace BTU?

prisma briar
#

Not sure, it's enough to heat the entire house but does it really unevenly

tidal bronze
#

Ah, that.

prisma briar
#

Yea, to get my bedroom comfortable off of central heat on cold days like this I have to set the thermostat on my hvac to like 25C.

#

Which makes the parts of the house it actually heats to 25C uninhabitable

solar zealot
#

more heating zones!

tidal bronze
#

Or more units

prisma briar
#

So I set my central heat to 21C and raise individual rooms beyond (or to) that with the minisplit

tidal bronze
#

Minisplit AC is OK. Heating, meh

#

I have no clue how they would heat at all.

prisma briar
#

I have a 4 head 3 ton minisplit, it can keep whatever rom I'm in comfortable. ยฏ_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

#

Know how if you run an A/C the outside part gets hot and the inside part gets cold? If you reverse that the outside part gets cold and the inside part gets hot.

tidal bronze
#

What I meant efficiency compared to anything NG.

prisma briar
#

Ah. I have cheap power where I am.

clear ferry
#

I heat with minisplit down to -15 efficiently, the modern ones do -25 fine

prisma briar
#

Under optimal efficiency (which I'm not getting on a -20C day like today) my minisplit is just slightly more expensive than my nat gas heater to run.

ocean oar
#

Mine claims 100% of rated power output down to -15ยฐC. But it rarely gets below 0 where I live so ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

prisma briar
#

My minisplit switches to resistive heat when it gets this cold

#

So it's basically just resistive right now and constantly pulling 3kW

tidal bronze
#

Wowza

prisma briar
#

They make ones that run this cold but they're basically unobtanium in America

tidal bronze
#

So really bad at efficiency even if you pair up Solar in cold weather considering solar hours.

prisma briar
clear ferry

I'd probably get back to average $0.05 per kwh when I move up north

prisma briar

If I went on a time-based plan and did everything off-peak I could probably get my rate down near that

glacial knot
#

what's your kids opinion of movig north btw?

clear ferry

One can't talk

prisma briar

But the time-based plans have $0.05 power at 2 AM but $0.20 power during the day when I use most of mine so screw that

clear ferry
prisma briar

I could probably make the hourly rate cheaper if I didn't have so much electric heating

But I can't just not run my heat for 8 hours during the high rate times in the middle of winter

tidal bronze
#

Those hourly rates are cheap

prisma briar

My power is ran by a cheap-ass coop in an already really cheap area of the country for power

Good for you.

prisma briar

prisma briar

I was trying to come up with a way to have a whole home UPS yesterday, heh

#

I already have all the electronics in my house on standalone UPSes but I want something to cover lighting too

#

My solution now is to just have a single light in each room connected to a UPS

tidal bronze
#

Was planning the whole house battery route then went with NG whole house gen

solar zealot
#

are there even multi phase batteries by now

glacial knot
#

What?

solar zealot

ones ive seen so far only seem to charge and serve a single phase

glacial knot

Batteries themselves are DC
You can get a 3phase inverted rectifier(?? Wechselrichter), but I don't think they are usually installed that way

solar zealot

would make sense, the battery part seems to be the most expensive part of such storage things

I need to check at my parents place. They recently got solar installed

prisma briar

You could get one of those flexible hoses like they have for fire trucks, that fits over the exhaust pipe and vents it outside. When you drive away it just pops off ๐Ÿ™‚

prisma briar

I could make an automation that opens my garage door when it senses pollutants rising

you could have an automation that cracks the garage door open when you remote start

prisma briar

it was such a great car with a great integration with HA

prisma briar

I drive so little that ubering would be cheaper than going back into car payments

warm goblet

ah that makes sense

tidal bronze
#

Uber FTW

prisma briar
#

The only reason I still have my car now is because it's paid off and costs me less than $1000/year to keep

ocean oar
#

Another thing that's good about living in a not-too-cold climate. Coldest temperature I recorded in the garage this past winter was 1.7ยฐC (35ยฐF), seat heaters are effective enough that it's not really worth bothering with pre-heating

tidal bronze
#

Yep

prisma briar
#

My garage heater is set to 45F

#

So my cars are always 45F when I get in

#

Other than a small section of wall my garage is insulated, including insulation I added to the garage door itself

#

And fixing that one section is on my to-do list, I just need to finish another project first

warm goblet
#

you know something i don't understand is that a lot of modern cities have traffic analysis & smart intersections, so it would be pretty easy for cities to install iot devices that use LTE to send updated traffic data & current light cycle status up and make it accessible for companies through a paid API, and companies like google and apple could integrate that data into their apps to route more efficiently/faster and detour around large blocks of traffic

ocean oar
prisma briar
#

Google and Apple already have that data from your cell phone

#

They don't need to enter into messy contracts with localities to get it

warm goblet
#

yeah, traffic congestion data

tidal bronze
warm goblet
#

but what if google could plan your route so that you never have to stop and wait for long at a light

prisma briar
#

Tragedy of the commons would hit and we'd all go back to waiting as long as we do now

ocean oar
tidal bronze
#

Most traffic data is historical

warm goblet
#

i disagree, apple maps in DFW is very responsive to live traffic changes (on highways only)

tidal bronze
#

Still historical

prisma briar
#

Google still has the current info, they're just not showing it to the user.

warm goblet
#

but also in DFW there are traffic scanners everywhere so apple could be pulling that data

tidal bronze
#

sirius has the most uptodate since they pull from DOT

warm goblet
#

yeah

#

i was lowkey considering building my own low-cost iot cameras that look at the traffic light and tell me what they are on my common routes so i can avoid them

prisma briar
#

your mom has the most up to date traffic info because she gets around so much

warm goblet
#

the city is built blocky so i can just take a detour to avoid lights

tidal bronze

Funny how traffic on NAV maps an Gmaps differ

speaking of

prisma briar
#

In the sense of money in the task of delivering groceries for walmart

warm goblet

the droneup drones are semi auto i believe

alpine harbor
#

There are stretches of road with flaky connectivity where Google's realtime traffic data is completely oblivious (there's a nasty bottleneck between LA and LV that turns into an absolute cluster, but Google always thinks its detours are totally "blue" when they are in fact "red/black")

tidal bronze
#

That's automated + supervision.

prisma briar
#

Being a drone delivery driver sounds like such a low-stress job

#

Right, they had to take a fun job and ruin it.

warm goblet
#

except the drones are pretty big and the blades can seriously injure civillians

alpine harbor
prisma briar

warm goblet

what about a vr headset paired with a 360* 6DoF camera

prisma briar

I feel like not having focus on a drone fixed in one direction would get confusing fast

warm goblet

that's pretty confusing

prisma briar

I think EV manufacturers have missed out not making trailers their cars can tow that are nothing but additional batteries

warm goblet

well

#

there's a reason for that

tidal bronze

You mean a trailer with a Genie?

prisma briar

Or just tow another EV in pair and use it for extra capacity

warm goblet
#

more batteries generally doesn't mean more range

#

it also means more weight to haul

prisma briar

Diminishing returns, yea, but more battery does mean more range.

warm goblet

EVs have to have a weight-to-range balance

do solar panels only capture energy from visible light waves or all sorts of waves (microwaves, x-rays, gammas rays, uv rays)?

prisma briar

visible light aligns with the peak intensity from the sun so I think most are targeted to that

warm goblet
#

ah

primal laurel

they're not limited to visible light, but that's where the highest efficiency can be reached

prisma briar

I don't think I can make an ansible playbook for that

warm goblet
prisma briar

idk if it's fixed now but at one point high energy rays damaging solar panels was one of the primary ways they degraded over time.

panel degradation is mainly due to general transistor degradation

panels produced now are so good they could last up to 50 years

prisma briar

warm goblet

primal laurel

I really like helpers

prisma briar

I was using custom scripts everywhere logging to/polling influxdb before I moved to HA and was getting along fine

#

I was just tired of everything being CLI

prisma briar
#

Before I used Home Assistant I had a bunch of mostly Python and C++ scripts I'd written to do things like automate my hvac and control lights/read door sensors

#

And I logged state changes on things to influxdb

warm goblet
#

oh nice

prisma briar
#

Doing that at the scale that HA's let me do it would have been very time consuming though

#

I had like a dozen lights, an A/C, a garage door, a half-dozen or so contact sensors, and a dry aging fridge on my old system.

#

All controlled by Raspberry Pi's and gpio boards hanging off of nearby computers

#

You can fit an Rpi Zero W, a 120v->5v adapter, two relays, and an outlet in a single gang wall box

#

Then run a bunch of wires out of the back to contact sensors and such

#

I thought I had some pictures of it but I guess not

#

I originally started with all of that before HA was a thing and didn't ever bother to go check for alternatives until I moved at the start of 2022 and decided I wasn't expanding my previous setup to a whole house and needed to redo everything

clear ferry

Sure, but considering it is a mesh, a lone bulb is very uncommon

#

And a lot of the channels share the same space, but the fixture itself has to be pretty weirdly designed for it to make this difference

Could someone help me understand this

#

I'm trying to setup a 3 way switch with this relay

#

I've only got one travel wire

#

In the current configuration I have white neutrals (for the load and main) coming in, hot black input 120v AC and the black output load/light

#

This allows me to toggle the light via HA

#

Now I want to re implement my three way switches

#

There's a switch upstairs (supplying the mains power)

iron granite
#

The blank wires should not look out of the device. That might short under some circumstances

dawn moth
#

I'm testing was gonna fix all that

dawn moth
#

That's where the downstairs switch used to be

#

So how do I tap into those s1 and s2 terminals?

dawn moth
#

So this?

#

No

prisma briar
#

I like how you got eraser marks on a digital image

dawn moth
#

I actually didn't make it

#

Some fella In a electrical Discord did.. more so seems to want to debate why I'm even trying to implement an iot device in the first place

prisma briar
#

You'd want either end of your spdt switches to go to s1 and s2, whenever the connection between s1 and s2 changes state the sonoff switch will toggle L Out's state.

dawn moth
#

That's what I was thinking in basic terms

#

But I'm struggling to imagine the wiring

#

I've got one red travel wire from the 2nd switch upstairs and that's it.. so I have to adapt something

prisma briar
#

Here's their official wiring diagram

#

If you only want one switch then just one terminal on the switch goes to s1 and the other terminal goes to s2.

dawn moth
#

I want two

#

But I've only got one travel wire

#

I'm assuming I connect that to my toggle switch terminal downstairs

#

And then I've gotta complete the circuit with a second travel wire?

prisma briar
#

Normally a switch is wired from load -> switch -> appliance, with the zbmini you want it wired zbmini -> switch -> zbmini

#

Which is why none of my zbmini's actually have the switch wired up, heh

dawn moth
#

Couldn't I just use the two white neutrals

#

One from the load and the other from the switch upstairs

#

Tie those together

#

And branch it out

#

One lead to the zigbee mini

prisma briar
#

I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but I'd suggest trying to find a friend who knows more to come over and help you if you're uncertain.

dawn moth
#

And the other to my switch

prisma briar
#

It's not great to DIY this stuff if you're entirely unfamiliar with house wiring.

dawn moth
#

I'm just not familiar with this particular scenario

prisma briar
#

Basically for the zbmini the switch should be taken entirely out of your mains circuit, it's only wired to the zbmini.

dawn moth
#

This is the switch upstairs

#

I've confirmed that the red is a traveler to the downstairs switch (zbmini junction)

#

And one of the blacks is a hot from the mains

#

Being carried down stairs

#

Before I cut them, the left switch is the one in question

#

This is the downstairs switch

#

Top right black is the mains hot

#

Red is the traveler

#

And the bottom right black is my loads common

#

Basic three way for a house

#

Now we've changed to this

#

The neutrals white are the load and switch upstairs.

#

And the one black is the hot mains line coming in from the switch upstairs

#

And the black hot output is heading to the light/load

#

The wire to the left is my travel

#

So since the travel carries no current I know I should be putting it on my switch downstairs where the zigbeemini is located

#

I can run an additional black wire from the bottom terminal on my switch to the s1 terminal on the zigbeemini

#

But I'm needing another travel wire to complete the parallel circuit

#

So what do I do from here?

#

If I should be relying on the zigmini to provide low current to the switches

dawn moth
#

Unless I only need the one travel line

prisma briar
#

Personally I'd get rid of the switches, wire the zbmini up to your device, and get Zigbee switches to control it over HA.

dawn moth
#

Those are pricey

prisma briar
#

yea but I hate running wires, lol.

dawn moth
#

Not to mention I don't want battery operated appliances

dawn moth
prisma briar
#

None of my wiring is 'smart home' friendly, I could do so much more if I just had neutral running to my switch boxes

gleaming crater
#

You just need a bypass if you're running a very low wattage led fixture off it

prisma briar
#

I'm not sure how those would work replacing a three-way switch though

gleaming crater
#

Depends on the brand

#

Some will sell a 'dumb' 2nd switch

#

But you can also bind switches in zwave/zigbee so be mirror of each other

#

And just delete the traveler all together

#

That's what I did with my inovelli

#

I have a stairwell with a master load switch and 2 other slaves, I just z-wave bound them to mirror state and they work even when HA is down

dawn moth
#

I wish I could just replace everything with ge zigbee smart switches

#

They have 3way ones with a "slave" switch addon

gleaming crater
#

I wanted full smart switch for the light bar notifications

#

But you can actually keep a dumb switch in the 2nd box and wire it up to most smart switches even

dawn moth
#

I've got one and I'm really pleased with it.. but paying 30-60 bucks a switch gets pricey when doing the whole house

gleaming crater
#

Oh for sure, I splurged when I moved into this house to do them all

prisma briar
#

Yea, I bought as few as I could and did as much automation as I could with cheaper door and presence sensors

dawn moth
prisma briar
#

I have 8 zigbee dimmers around, they're all battery powered

dawn moth
#

I'm too impressed with these ones from ge

prisma briar
#

I smashed one by accident while moving furniture but other than that they've been fine

dawn moth
#

But who knows when ya move

gleaming crater
#

Also neutral doesn't matter if you have a smart bulb in the fixture

#

It'll always be on

prisma briar
#

If he's using a zbmini he probably doesn't have a smart bulb

dawn moth
#

I'm trying to avoid smart bulbs

#

Even though that's the only zigbee device stores seem to sell local to me

prisma briar
#

Home Depot here has a small selection of Zigbee switches but they're all really overpriced

#

Like $100 for a switch

dawn moth
#

I like the in wall relays because they can be super cheap bulk and off brand

gleaming crater
#

Isn't inovelli like 60-70?

prisma briar
#

The zbminis are nice because they can do other things too

dawn moth
prisma briar
#

I have my bathroom exhaust fans and ceiling fans all controlled by zbminis

dawn moth
prisma briar

My doorbell is wired to the S1/S2 on a zbmini and I look for a state change on it to send a notification that my doorbell has been pressed
