Lol
Yes
Only in poor areas
foreigners.. never know wtf they are asking
Lmao
So everywhere except new York and Los Angeles then
Few apartments/houses don't have any laundry facilities, but laundromats are still around, yea. Lots of apartments have shared facilities where you have to go to a different level/building to get to the washer/dryer though.
At that time the apartment I was living in only had 3 working washers and they were always in use.

You've got a weird image of the US if you think NY and LA don't have poor people
I would be proud to be near a laundromat than a dump of ice and 0.5 deli
That's like assuming Oslo doesn't have snow
laundromats are handy in a few situations. especially when your needing to do a whole lot of clothes quickly
Their ratio of poor to rich probably outnumber other cities @prisma briar
At least in monetary total value
Most laundromats also do more than just provide a washer and dryer, they have commercial services for businesses, you can go drop off 100s of pounds of laundry and they'll clean and fold and press them for you
we have some of the laundry services around
But I'd have to go to the city (i.e. poor people territory) for a laundromat ๐
I think there are two dry cleaners in Oslo, but I haven't seen it in any other cities
Yep too small to see the big picture
lol
I see the US ego is to scale in that picture too
So you are quadflight ๐
Just saying, NY and LA have some of the most famously poor neighborhoods in the country. Skid row, Harlem, etc...
pls rename to QF-Kale
thx
Kelp ....come on now.
what about sea weed?
queef...
queef kelp has already been made as a joke
My food is not funny
should just name yourself more realistically.. ostrich
That's surprisingly pointy for kelp
ๆๅธ, huh
This deal guy makes me wanna goto costco all the time. ๐คฃ
So many people have shopped at Costco but not taking advantage of the best products they have! Watch this video and see what you're missing out on in Costco January 2024!
I've been shopping at Costco store for these items for years. People have been asking me for an Costco haul or another Costco secrets video and what things they should be spec...
Harlem is still just 200k vs 1.6m Manhattan vs 8.8m NYC and if you assume 50% of those are in the poor category, then it is still only 1.1%
You are going to buy Costco? Congrats on the new company
Harlem and Manhattan are two regions that constitute NYC
They're two of the five buroughs in NYC
I just want that Wok
W/e
says 10 things yet I think he's on #30 a minute into the video lol
In the US poor areas are often adjacent to wealthy areas is more what I was trying to get at, so blanket painting any larger city as 'wealthy' or 'poor' is silly.
And most people are in between wealthy and poor, I'd say
still think sams club is better
well walmart is going full on amazon at this point so it can only improve i would think
not to mention they still do the drink and hot dog for a buck 50
Same at Costco
only out of competitiveness lol
As long as its 1.50
I was gifted a Sams Club membership two years ago by a friend, they've renewed it twice now. I've literally never went because I'm not driving 20 miles to go to a bulk store when I normally only keep like a week's worth of food on hand.
Not even sure the last time I was in a Walmart
These days they have some random hard to find single malts. That's more important than anything.
(I did tell them I've never gone, but I guess it's bascially free for them to renew for me)
worth for things like toilet paper, towels etc if the membership is already paid for
If it was nearby and not a hassle to just get to the store, sure
My front door is about 200m from a Kroger
These deals why I mostly go.
Hmm, I never tried Japanese Whiskey
.... no words
I got a bottle of this peanut butter whiskey that is spot on with it's peanut butter taste
My drink of choice is probably Hennessy though
I know where not to go in a zombie apocalypse
i bet your costco is the only one in the country that stocks that stuff too lol
Not at all. All of the ones near me have that kind of stuff
so does gas stations..
gas stations can only sell beer here
Actually I think that changed at the start of the year
aren't you in the same "bubble"?
If you see anything from Suntory do let me know.
I will get my friend to dash out
They used to have a bunch of Suntory, but haven't seen it in a while
That's the problem. They had 6 bottles and 1 per.
Probably a few years ago
They even had Yamazaki 100th anniversary but I missed it ๐
@tidal bronzeyou switching to that atmos flexconnect?
Not anytime soon.
apparently my tv will be updated to support that this year at some point
My seating positions are calibrated
i won't utilize it but just saw it as a big thing for tv's in 2024 lol
I thing wifi surround is getting very good. Sonos is at the top of the game.
i thought it was bt
BT? Maybe. I am not sold on that stuff yet. Once they get into bass transducers I will be looking into them
Do you guys trust the microsd snake oil of high endurance versions
only the Nintendoโข certified ones for my switch
In theory they advertise a couple hundred tbw
But there is nothing to compare that to
I can't believe that they have multiple flash tiers and that they only put the good stuff onto the much less common high endurance lines
i had swapped the sd in my rpi at my farm for an endurance one when the cold seemed to have killed the prior one. not had any issues yet with it
it can also be over provisioning
but you only really get the data if you are a large customer/partner
some claim "industrial" high endurance, and that comes with some own specifications which they need to comply with, so there has to be some differences
they are targeted for a use on dashcams and video recording
they arent even noticable more expensive
yea I just bought some wd purple on ebay for ๐ค money
i got a couple for my pis the other day
Does it? Is that an ISO or IEEE standard?
just use them PXE with no local storage ๐ฎ
i got it for the temp rating
neither I guess, its just the SD Association standards
I think the high endurance ones also have more testing in regards to things like radiation causing bit flips
And they're just underprovisioned a lot more
Looks like they use a different nand type too
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38702783 @clear ferry
Fun fact, I did do cloudflare companion, Kubernetes and metalLB to deploy my lab with internal IP adresse exposed to my domain on the internet ๐ฅฒ
Container x spun up and got IP 192.168.250.44, then that is pushed to service.domain.com and I can use internally in my network
I considered adding 127.0.0.1 to a public domain at work...
I'm mostly worried about some subdomain shenanigans though
I did that and deleted half Oslo Kommunes user database haha
We got a membership because they were carrying the diapers we settled on then they never had them in stock again
The nearby one closed. Meanwhile at any Costco there's never a quiet time of day
I've been to costco a few times, it was basically bulk piles of commodities and random junk I could find at Walmart.
At least you didn't stop Norwegians ticket system or Schenkers entire fleet

My nearest Costco is ~650km away, about an 8.5 hour drive.
I mean to be fair there is but the one in New Zealand so far...
Stores like Costco died here in the 90s
We had some Wallmarts here - they died
We had something similar to walmart in the 00s died after a decade
1997 to 2006 here. They had their company headquarters in a former prison
We had walmart or a couple years (or was it only months?). Can't operate without abusing employees
And tried to operate the way they do in the US in Germany. Which just doesn't work. Greeters in super markets ๐
I still don't get used to the American calls I'm on where people ask how are you doing? but they don't care really and they don't expect a reply
You are used to not speaking to anyone for years? The usual Scandinavian way
I just give them the full answer every time ๐
I'll give you a randy scandy @last cedar
I do too just to make it awkward
Don't just post random pictures
These are all acceptable random pictures
raccoondom pictures

Now introducing: #PDBrick!
1.7 kW worth of raw USB-C PD power.
24x USB-C ports.
4x 100W, 20x 65W.
(4x USB A, but we don't talk about those :P)
I never did a post of the project that @techbeard and I did last-minute before #CCCamp23, so here you go.
Build log in the thread below.
#usbC #usbPD
Does it have a HA Integration?
its on github so you can make y our own
I don't know why, but I want to see someone try to make it out of one of the long-ass HPE BladeCenter PSUs
Those are great PSUs
Except for the brownout issue
I probably replaced 500 PSUs proactively due to that
Also the C7000 PSUs are tiny compared to the XL675s
If memory serves right
They have the weird AC DC plug
This one?
Yeah that fucker
The C7000 with DC power was also fun, very popular in Japan, torquing power plugs
We cooked more than a few of the longboi 2650W PSUs because in the Apollo 6000 systems, if you installed the power shelves per HPE's documentation, the PSUs got no cooling.
Turns out you can't put the air exhaust on the top then also tell people they can install it with another device racked immediately above.
๐
Totally going to make an adapter to hang like 5 of those off of a ryobi tool battery
I'm annoyed by how expensive the 1st-party DeWalt USB-C adapter is.
Don't want to build my own, but also don't want to pay for theirs.
I mean I also have one of those big-ass battery packs which has an 1800W inverter and two 100W USB-C outputs, so I'm pretty covered
None of Ryobi's official ones have anything over 30W PD
I have an 800w inverter that has a 12v plug and usb a and usb c, but still only 30w on the pd
It's got 12v though so I just have a car phone charger that'll do 65w in there
https://www.dewalt.com/product/dcb094k/20v-max20v-maxflexvolt-5-amp-usb-charging-kit
100W in/out USB-C, 12W USB-A
Weirdly that US version only comes with a 65W mains charger, the one we get here has a 100W
Yea, I've seen that one
I toyed with the idea of adapting my Ryobi battery to a Dewalt battery for one
But I'd really like more than one USB-C charger
I have six ryobi batteries and two chargers so I'm not super worried about it charging, I just want the outputs to run my phone/tablet/whatever off of
And my tablet doesn't charge+run off of 30w pd
Nor does my work laptop
I've wound up with eight batteries (two 18V 3Ah, four 18V 5Ah, two 54V 3Ah) and four chargers
All of mine are 18v, I have a 1.5Ah, 4 4Ah, and a 12Ah one
And then also the big chungus: https://www.ecoflow.com/us/delta-portable-power-station
Which is 1.26kWh
Prepare for blackouts, go off-grid, and stay powered on for hours with the EcoFlow DELTA โ the industry standard for portable power stations. Learn more.
Oh, if we're talking normal batteries I have like 7200VA of UPSes here
I really want to make a whole home UPS
Something like https://www.amazon.com/12V-500Ah-LiFePO4-Out-Door-Applications/dp/B0CP6XHM5L on a BMS that my non-appliance circuits will switch to if the power goes out
We have over 20 years of experience in the lithium battery industry, with rich experience in research and development, production, and after-sales service. This means that our LiFePO4 battery have sufficient advantages. Although we are a new brand, Believe Us! We are committed to using technology...

Probably one of the reasons the engineer who designed the Moonshot 1500 chassis made it 4.2u
I remember those. 4โ RU. What a concept
All of the Apollo 6000 stuff was 5U (chassis) and 1.5U (power shelf), but to make things line up the chassis could be mounted ยฝU off
Turns out they shouldn't have bothered, should have just made the power shelf 2U so it cooled itself properly and everything would have been fine
I think I've only seen one 6000 system in my life
It was a POC for water cooling with 45c inlet
I prefer the Apollo 8000 design
@forest edge about to hit the oven and was thinking of you ๐
Non appliance except refrigerators of course
you mean how you ruined crab?
We've been the one house with a generator for an extended outage and we had multiple neighbors using our freezer to save their food
Oh how wish you were here.
Cajun lemon butter ๐
I meant my appliance circuits like my oven/dryer/heat pump/garage heater
I don't want to back those up
My furnace blower is all I care to back up off of battery
That, and computers + lights
Which would also include my fridge and basically everything but the stove in my kitchen
Colas Wattway is back with the two 1000sqm solar cycleway installations in the Netherlands!

Some FAIL ...
lmao, so predictable
it's going to fail
Hmm
I replaced a light fixture that held a single bulb with one that holds two
Now I can either buy a second Hue bulb to match the one I had or I can put a WiZ bulb in the other slot
just stick a thermoelectric fan in there and be done with it
Lol, power went out literally across the road from me
Damn, just saw my highest power draw here so far. Hit 100A draw for a second.
Good thing my power isn't out, I don't think I could run my 5000w dryer with a hand crank
lol
Oh finally a store that sells empty bottle boxes!
Also:
I don't know who buys out of that glass cabinet. I've seen $17k bottles in there
I have a plan for the washlet outlet. Should be easy
$10 less in-store
Hibiki is nice.
It's a blend with no age listed, so tends to be pretty affordable
We too have Costco glass cabinet starting at 3k stuff
As long as they carry Prisoner I am a happy camper.
What's the + CRV 10 in the corner
Basically a recycling fee
Ah
You can collect money if you return bottles and cans and such, but I doubt anyone does. I just throw it in my recycling bin and the city gets it
we have big machines at every supermarket to hand it in
Imagine going out of your way to get the 10c on a $8000 bottle
There's a Seinfeld episode about it
I used to do cans years ago, but it was by weight and utterly worthless
they added cans here last year
but it's been kind of a fail so it's mainly drug addicts fishing them from bins
I remember about 25 years ago BP petrol stations here in NZ had like a reverse vending machine, into which you inserted empty cans and randomly got prizes (I remember packs of BP-branded playing cards). Definitely wasn't anything "official", just something they were doing.
Yeah, we had those too. Auto can crushers that you could get money back from
Like a Coinstar for cans (deposits change), mostly in supermarkets
We also didn't have curbside recycling in previous cities, but I do now. No reason to take anything anywhere
In college, there were always homeless folks digging around in dumpsters for recyclables
here every supermarket is required to have one
it's worth it, especially if you hand in things like beer crates. If you had a party it could be 30 euro's or so
1.5 ยฐC CPU temp is quite chilly.
i guess it's the lan port that's 0c. the cpu is rated to far lower
Not available as add-on on a Pi
Poor aliens
Nevermind... Meant Folding@home ๐
If HA had a FAH group they could call it folding at home assistant
Why do you wanna run your pi in a freezer? Isn't a temp sensor a better choice?
you should come visit the midwest right now and make sure to wear your shorts
I don't want to but sadly I have to ๐ก
Not risking any body parts freezing off
Ope
What the actual
Somebody made that
I love that
It's amusing
Best part is that it says accepted inputs are 15-40 but examples with 12
Yes but it's important to know you can step down 12 to 12
12v space heater
I just realized the PCMR stuff where a couple share a desk with computers full of RGB and room lit up in all 255 variations is our generations LIVE LOVE LAUGH and I hate it
๐ RGB computers
Worst ADHD thing i ever saw was a CPU cooler with a OLED screen playing Rick and Morty
My latest PC build has no RGB or lighting at all
I have the power LED connected
We don't need to get any of you diagnosed then
I have RGB
I have an appointment in late February for that
I would probably not be very good at my job if I was medicated
Why tho
the appointment, or atx's statement?
Hello there
General Kenobi
Actually same
Funnily enough my servers have more RGB than my desktop lol
Mainly because I'm too lazy to turn them off and it's a good way to tell it's running from a distance
The statement
Because whatever makes me good at my job probably is a defect
I just want to know if Ritalin is actually as good as some claim online
Occasional days to do office work wouldn't hurt ๐
It does work well if you actually have adhd, if you are a wrongly diagnosed autist you are more likely to be tweaked and tired
Like, I have ADHD
And I get medication
When I don't take my medication I don't see when I need to stop with doing something
Or I didn't know I was doing it in the first place
So I kinda become an annoying person
And even with my medication I am defect
I have a hyperfocus
I can switch context really quick (this much that I start conversations with a question out of the blue and I always have people like, wtf are you talking about? Oh, this.)
And this was one of the reasons I'm now single again as she didn't like me coming home an hour too late or so
I tend to swap in old context randomly
And people get super confused how and why I'm suddenly on an old topic
Except for my trainer who has ADD
He just swaps along
Exactly that
Oh and I'm a practical thinker
I remember I had a group project once
And then I came with a seemingly question
And then they were like, nah, we're not going to answer it, it's not relevant
2 weeks or so later, it became relevant
Similar happened to me too. Shortly before the lockdowns and curfews were declared for some time, I asked if we shouldn't get service cards to prove we are emergency services personnel and excepted from that regulations. Nah, we don't need that.
"A few moments later" that scenario happened and they worried how we could come to work - so they had to do nightshifts to print those service cards for every person.
๐
"I told you so" is a regular thought
๐ luckily I'm not critical
I would never try to get anything diagnosed
I like having a pilots medical lol
If they care about ADD, they'd probably already care about the depression on file ๐คท
I guess all the Americans are watching the throne change in Denmark and the volcanic eruption in Iceland
No wait, that wouldn't be patriotic
I arranged myself with my diagnoses. They provide me additional vacation and earlier retirement.
Zzz early retirement
I feel bad for how much this amuses me

I chose you, Button!
Bonus points if the correct thing isnโt a button but some text below the buttons
I don't think that those pervasive, intrusive dialogs have meaningfully improved anything
Just more stuff standing between me and the content I'm looking for
thats why firefox auto-declines the cookies for you
declining is the way, accepting just makes pages reload with the cookie set. another second at least wasted
At work, every time I print something, I get a prompt asking if the print was okay or not.
Doesn't matter if you press Yes or No - no option has any consequences for the user (like being shown the print page again).
"Has it been okay?" - "No." - "Fine. Not my problem."
Any recommendations for a simple home lab dashboard?
Maybe it has consequences for the printer
Yes senpai
it will be praised if it did good
thought you were anti-ui?

I am for HA/Automation. Looking up evernote for a docker container is getting a little old.
Logo = Chrome Cast Audio
i have that in use but its very limited https://github.com/daledavies/jump
How is the search function?
Want to document wifi clients and if searchable is a plus.
search just lists elemts you have in the dashboard with the option to continue on the page of your chosen search engine
Can you add comments/descriptions to elements?
no
rpi showing cpu temps hit -1.2C somewhere around 5am. and it's still going lol
Nice, we are going from -2 back to -27 now
The cold water bidet is a bit chilly in this weather lol
It would be too boring.
There we go
Idk why we'd care about Denmark's royalty and, oh no, the land of volcanoes has volcanoes.
I'll have fun watching the reality show that is us the next year
My prediction is Trump's going to be barred from running in enough states he can't win overall, DeSantis is going to be the Republican candidate, and DeSantis is going to loose terribly because he's an overgrown frat boy.
Amd/or Trump will be unable to mount an effective campaign from whatever dark hole he's shoved in to.
How many seasons of Kardashians are there at this point?
That's still on?
๐คท dunno. But seen a shitpost about someone congratulating themselves to not watching it for 23 seasos now D:
I think most of America could probably claim that.
That show always seemed to have a small loud cult following
damn, not even noon yet
is that a lot?
It's about $3 in electric costs
seems about alright for heating purposes
I also have a gas furnace running too, this is just heating rooms the furnace doesn't hit well
Central + HP?
Central is heat only, heat pump does heat and A/C.
50-60kwh a day in heat energy seems about right on a coldish day
hope they arent as efficient as the dryers around ;D
What's your furnace BTU?
Not sure, it's enough to heat the entire house but does it really unevenly
Ah, that.
Yea, to get my bedroom comfortable off of central heat on cold days like this I have to set the thermostat on my hvac to like 25C.
Which makes the parts of the house it actually heats to 25C uninhabitable
more heating zones!
Or more units
So I set my central heat to 21C and raise individual rooms beyond (or to) that with the minisplit
I have a 4 head 3 ton minisplit, it can keep whatever rom I'm in comfortable. ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
Know how if you run an A/C the outside part gets hot and the inside part gets cold? If you reverse that the outside part gets cold and the inside part gets hot.
What I meant efficiency compared to anything NG.
Ah. I have cheap power where I am.
I heat with minisplit down to -15 efficiently, the modern ones do -25 fine
Under optimal efficiency (which I'm not getting on a -20C day like today) my minisplit is just slightly more expensive than my nat gas heater to run.
Mine claims 100% of rated power output down to -15ยฐC. But it rarely gets below 0 where I live so ๐คทโโ๏ธ
My minisplit switches to resistive heat when it gets this cold
So it's basically just resistive right now and constantly pulling 3kW
Wowza
They make ones that run this cold but they're basically unobtanium in America
So really bad at efficiency even if you pair up Solar in cold weather considering solar hours.
Yea, but according to energymaps my area is almost entirely green energy today so at least I'm burning less fuel to shove into the atmosphere
So 58 in winter?
That's excluding my gas, but yea
Oh boy.
And is including my friend's fucking ridiculous fishtanks that are currently sitting at 16kWh for the day
or is this like you and 35 raccoons
What do you think energy drinks are made from?
4 people, 250m2 lots of media and food
And cleaning
Done 4 loads of clothes today too
even if we heat the pool, hitting 25 is a stretch
I would have to go to a shelter if I heat mine with electricity
21kWh has been my heat pump, 16kWh has been my friend's stupid fishtank heaters, 7kWh has been the heater I put in my garage to keep it above freezing, the rest has been TVs and computers and fridges and such
meanwhile we surely pay 10x the amount for 1/10 the energy
sucks not having free electricity
My rate goes from about $0.08/kWh to $0.12/kWh throughout the year
Can't wait to move north to practically free electricity
Yea, atx has negative electricity prices every second day
ours went down a bit again from .45 to .36/kwh
Idle is not bad at all.
but still thats like 3kโฌ a year for ~7mwh
Ours is expensive at $0.16 currently
My baseline might be off lol
I probably take twice the power and pay half the price, lol.
I'd probably get back to average $0.05 per kwh when I move up north
If I went on a time-based plan and did everything off-peak I could probably get my rate down near that
what's your kids opinion of movig north btw?
One can't talk
But the time-based plans have $0.05 power at 2 AM but $0.20 power during the day when I use most of mine so screw that
nad the other isn't listened to
The other one is fine
Hah
Well, she starts school in the fall, so the timing is perfect
She won't have to change schools / classmates
95% do the hour by hour rate, 5% have fixed
I could probably make the hourly rate cheaper if I didn't have so much electric heating
But I can't just not run my heat for 8 hours during the high rate times in the middle of winter
Those hourly rates are cheap
My power is ran by a cheap-ass coop in an already really cheap area of the country for power
Good for you.
ikr
as long as they don't run it cheap by skimping on the redundancy in the net D:
I get a power outage every few months for a few minutes, and maybe once a year that lasts an hour.
@clear ferry have you calibrated a aqara temperature sensor? (If yes, please help in zigbee, if you may)
The power across the street from me was out yesterday because some drunkard drove his truck into a utility pole outside a substation
Here it's 0.25 to 0.31
How tf are people supposed to have mostly/fully electric homes with those rates?
Solar offset
yea, I want to get one of those solar batteries, even without solar just to have a private buffer ๐
I would not want to live in a place without NG
I was trying to come up with a way to have a whole home UPS yesterday, heh
I already have all the electronics in my house on standalone UPSes but I want something to cover lighting too
My solution now is to just have a single light in each room connected to a UPS
Was planning the whole house battery route then went with NG whole house gen
are there even multi phase batteries by now
What?
ones ive seen so far only seem to charge and serve a single phase
Batteries themselves are DC
You can get a 3phase inverted rectifier(?? Wechselrichter), but I don't think they are usually installed that way
would make sense, the battery part seems to be the most expensive part of such storage things
I need to check at my parents place. They recently got solar installed
Just convert your whole house to DC and run it directly from the batteries ๐
Telco style; -48V bus bars everywhere
I have not I've found them to be pretty similar to other sensors in the rooms, so I saw no need

Fat copper rails to carry 80A or so
Well it'd be 108A to run that 5.2kW clothes dryer that @prisma briar has ๐
Mine all show like a +10% too high humidity
You're just jealous I get to burn so many dinosaurs.
Heat pump ALL THE THINGS
oh no, my dryer used 5kW off and on for 30 minutes instead of 500w for 4 hours, such energy waste
I don't have a zero watt option to dry, lol
I'd have to get the humidity out somehow if I hung dry clothes
Huh
You don't have room inside?
I have my garage set to 7C
I just spent a ton of effort to move the washer and dryer out of my house, lol
Wait, heatpump dryers just vent the cold side of the pump into the room they're in?
I always assumed that end was outside
Texas people go like "how do you guys still have power?"
But this is only a light half day of snow
Texas's power infrastructure literally stops when it gets below freezing
The cold side is used to re-condense the water coming out of the clothes, so more you're dumping a bunch of cold water down the drain.
Hey Guys Could Anyone Reccomend me Zigbee Arson Devices
I want to Make self Destruct Button For my Smart Home, to Set it on Fire
(disclaimer: sarcasm)
What a disaster that looks like
You mean a very low snow level winter? Yeah i agree, should have been 2m
it's funny bc we're having a freezeover right now and everyone is panicking about power outages this weekend
LOL
I can keep my garage at 60F but I'm pretty sure that'd cost more than just having a normal dryer
Sucks to have the outdoors like that for months,
is there a way to disable global warming in home assistant so i can keep my texas home at normal temps
Hang on, I'll find the picture from my hometown 1997
I'd figure Californians would like snow, hides all the needles lining the streets.
lol
LMFAOOOO
Yeah, shame it is only for 4 months here, i prefer 9 months
Whatelse to do there right?
No, tromsรธ Norway
ohh i see
We usually get 2-3m, that year was 4+
Snow should be a choice. Within 90 minutes of a quick drive.
on a serious note, is there a channel here I can ask for reccomendations on smart lights?
Lots, actually
Thankfully California is a choice though

I really wish running my new garage heater wasn't so stupidly expensive to maintain 21C with
It was really nice getting into a warm car
Remote start?
In an enclosed garage?
Oh you can't leave it outside
Free sauna
I can but that sounds even more annoying
Also we regularly get hail in the summer here so I'd at least need to build a car port to keep it outside
You could get one of those flexible hoses like they have for fire trucks, that fits over the exhaust pipe and vents it outside. When you drive away it just pops off ๐
I could make an automation that opens my garage door when it senses pollutants rising
you could have an automation that cracks the garage door open when you remote start
That actually might not be a terrible idea in general
No states for your engine?
do you have a newer smart car? like onstar or tesla or bluelink
I have a 11 year old Altima, lol
Been driving it since 2014
My next car will be an EV
If I ever get another car
i recently downgraded from a 21' CT5-V
it was such a great car with a great integration with HA
I drive so little that ubering would be cheaper than going back into car payments
ah that makes sense
Uber FTW
The only reason I still have my car now is because it's paid off and costs me less than $1000/year to keep
Another thing that's good about living in a not-too-cold climate. Coldest temperature I recorded in the garage this past winter was 1.7ยฐC (35ยฐF), seat heaters are effective enough that it's not really worth bothering with pre-heating
Yep
My garage heater is set to 45F
So my cars are always 45F when I get in
Other than a small section of wall my garage is insulated, including insulation I added to the garage door itself
And fixing that one section is on my to-do list, I just need to finish another project first
you know something i don't understand is that a lot of modern cities have traffic analysis & smart intersections, so it would be pretty easy for cities to install iot devices that use LTE to send updated traffic data & current light cycle status up and make it accessible for companies through a paid API, and companies like google and apple could integrate that data into their apps to route more efficiently/faster and detour around large blocks of traffic
Google and Apple already have that data from your cell phone
They don't need to enter into messy contracts with localities to get it
yeah, traffic congestion data
This is rarely real-time
but what if google could plan your route so that you never have to stop and wait for long at a light
Tragedy of the commons would hit and we'd all go back to waiting as long as we do now
Also if there's one person parked on the side of the road having a sandwich, it can mark a section of road as completely blocked
Most traffic data is historical
i disagree, apple maps in DFW is very responsive to live traffic changes (on highways only)
Still historical
Google still has the current info, they're just not showing it to the user.
but also in DFW there are traffic scanners everywhere so apple could be pulling that data
Yep, this
sirius has the most uptodate since they pull from DOT
yeah
i was lowkey considering building my own low-cost iot cameras that look at the traffic light and tell me what they are on my common routes so i can avoid them
your mom has the most up to date traffic info because she gets around so much
the city is built blocky so i can just take a detour to avoid lights
Funny how traffic on NAV maps an Gmaps differ
speaking of
my local walmart is offfering drone deliveries now
that's so sick
you can check if yours does too: https://droneupdelivery.com/
Is that ever going to work?
I wonder how much drone flyers get paid
i have no clue
In what sense or task?
but i can't wait to have tons of spare drone parts ๐
In the sense of money in the task of delivering groceries for walmart
the droneup drones are semi auto i believe
There are stretches of road with flaky connectivity where Google's realtime traffic data is completely oblivious (there's a nasty bottleneck between LA and LV that turns into an absolute cluster, but Google always thinks its detours are totally "blue" when they are in fact "red/black")
That's automated + supervision.
Being a drone delivery driver sounds like such a low-stress job
Right, they had to take a fun job and ruin it.
except the drones are pretty big and the blades can seriously injure civillians
Never trust Google on I15
They will have you supervising a quantity of drones sufficient to make you consistently stressed, don't worry
If I'm not flying the drone with an fpv headset it's not fun anymore.
Why employ an expensive human brain and not utilize it near 100% while it's on the clock? Those are wasted cycles
what about a vr headset paired with a 360* 6DoF camera
I feel like not having focus on a drone fixed in one direction would get confusing fast
i mean i assume it'd be a position similar to ATC
that's pretty confusing
just requires a quick thinking and flawless head for that
Flying a plane sounds fun, running an ATC tower sounds stressful.
The new DJI delivery drones come with a whole fancy fleet management stack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hhp11I-vGHA
https://jrupprechtlaw.com/drone-delivery/ pretty long read but most of the delivery stuff is just hype.
I'm never getting drone delivery where I am
I'm in between three military bases and two airports, lol
I can't even fly a personal drone here
you don't want what military drones deliver
FAA would show up, take my drone, and slap me with a multi-thousand dollar fine
They are formulating drone traffic laws now hopefully something good will come of that
deal
all the drone enthusiasts: ๐
but why drones? What's so useful about drones delivering groceries
i have no clue
but it's a thing now so i can say i'm living in the future
is there a tldr
400ft /vert is not much space when multiple operators start flying
fair
we have these things:
There'd be so much of the year a drone couldn't fly here even if they were allowed to
What are they going to do in Cold regions?
Though I kind of want to see what happens to one in a 60mph wind gust
I like this company because they're essentially a tech company that sells groceries
are those like mini EV delivery trucks
yep
america would never allow that
americans are like "if it isn't a manly muscly gas guzzling diesel engine, we don't want it on our roads"
America goes for gasoline over diesel, get your stereotypes right.
just pretend it's a tesla
Assuming all of America is like Texas is like assuming all of Europe is like Greece.
i live in texas so it happens
No, they're just an embarassing corner.
I'll go EV once you can do LA to Napa without charging
i'll go EV once my EV can become boat, car, truck, and plane all at the same time
I think EV manufacturers have missed out not making trailers their cars can tow that are nothing but additional batteries
You mean a trailer with a Genie?
Or just tow another EV in pair and use it for extra capacity
Diminishing returns, yea, but more battery does mean more range.
EVs have to have a weight-to-range balance
yes, but the cost would outweigh the benefits
Slap a stylized 'T' on it and suckers will buy it up
better battery chemistry = better range
Nope. I'm in Colorado.
if you find the secret sauce you could make trillions
better battery chemistry = hotter fires too
lets just fit small stars into every EV and make a dyson sphere around it
not perse
i think i just came up with the trillion dollar idea
i'll see you guys on shark tank
What good would trapping Peter Dinklage in a vacuum do?

do solar panels only capture energy from visible light waves or all sorts of waves (microwaves, x-rays, gammas rays, uv rays)?
visible light aligns with the peak intensity from the sun so I think most are targeted to that
ah
they're not limited to visible light, but that's where the highest efficiency can be reached
I think a high efficiency gamma -> electricity converter is one of the holy grails of clean energy
That might be outside of my skill set
if you want to learn more about solar panel physics then I recommend pveducation.org. That's still somewhat comprehensible
I don't think I can make an ansible playbook for that
i just had a dumb suggestion but i had to ask the question first in order to not embarass myself, turns out it was a good idea to ask first
idk if it's fixed now but at one point high energy rays damaging solar panels was one of the primary ways they degraded over time.
panel degradation is mainly due to general transistor degradation
panels produced now are so good they could last up to 50 years
God I hate the automation editor
Don't remember the name of an automation you want to edit? Lol, you get to scroll through 200 until you find it.
At least it quit bugging out all the time
I should
i want json
group all my automations by putting them into their own files and including them from a master
the automation editor will get folders or groups or labels or whatever at some point
I really need to break my configuration.yaml out into multiple files too
my goal is to get rid of most YAML
I probably don't need 99% of it
but my install is so old
In general I don't like using YAML. I have a ton of groups left over from before they added all the group helpers I keep meaning to move over to proper helpers
If not for the UI I probably wouldn't use HA.
once my hass setup is complete i feel like i'm just going to hand-code all my automations using netdaemon
I really like helpers
I was using custom scripts everywhere logging to/polling influxdb before I moved to HA and was getting along fine
I was just tired of everything being CLI
wdym by this?
Before I used Home Assistant I had a bunch of mostly Python and C++ scripts I'd written to do things like automate my hvac and control lights/read door sensors
And I logged state changes on things to influxdb
oh nice
Doing that at the scale that HA's let me do it would have been very time consuming though
I had like a dozen lights, an A/C, a garage door, a half-dozen or so contact sensors, and a dry aging fridge on my old system.
All controlled by Raspberry Pi's and gpio boards hanging off of nearby computers
You can fit an Rpi Zero W, a 120v->5v adapter, two relays, and an outlet in a single gang wall box
Then run a bunch of wires out of the back to contact sensors and such
I thought I had some pictures of it but I guess not
I originally started with all of that before HA was a thing and didn't ever bother to go check for alternatives until I moved at the start of 2022 and decided I wasn't expanding my previous setup to a whole house and needed to redo everything
nice
Wouldn't help if lights are the type that trigger based on car detection
Since maps wouldn't route you that way even if it might be faster
thats true
anyone here working with markdown regularly?
wiki markdown or ha jinja?
Oh, I guess the markdown boxes do support normal markdown. I've just always done jinja blocks in them.
markdown for git wiki
im trying to find the best way to display a csv file as a markdown table in a github wiki without having to manually convert it every time something changes
okay scratch that, markdown is not made for this

Huh, installed a new light fixture in a pantry and it completely blocks zigbee
Even the bulb that was working fine in the previous fixture
But wifi bulbs work fine still
Hi @bright spire , can you dm me regarding the Vodafone Station lib?
lol -7F and i think one of my garage wifi bulbs just froze out
That makes no sense as it is the same spectrum
Now I'm no RF expert but WiFi signals tend to be more powerful afaik. There's also different channels that are more likely to conflict.
Sure, but considering it is a mesh, a lone bulb is very uncommon
And a lot of the channels share the same space, but the fixture itself has to be pretty weirdly designed for it to make this difference
Maybe if it was all metal, grounded and shaped like a lot of overlapping #### and the WiFi router was the floor above right over the fixture
There's 800MHz (or was it closer to 900?) Zigbee. But it's incredibly uncommon
I also have much longer range on ZigBee than i do on wifi, my mailbox is battery powered poor antenna and is 25m away, I have no WiFi coverage there
Wifi could also be on 5GHz (though with cheap bulbs, questionable)
Or just have higher TX power/better RX filters
Wouldn't be surprised if the wifi chips are just built with more shit signal mitigations
Are you sure you don't mix it up with Z-Wave? ๐ค
No. Zigbee exists on 2 bands.
Some devices also use 784 MHz in China, 868 MHz in Europe and 915 MHz in the US and Australia, even those regions and countries still use 2.4 GHz for most commercial Zigbee devices for home use
ah nice. Full spread ๐
The CC1352 has hardware for it, I wanted to play with it
good luck finding devices^^
You can diy stuff for it probably
though I guess it's more like wifi7 exists now? Spec isn't finalized but implemented in probalistic ways

I have had two sick kids home for 9 days and I've had a fever of 40 since Thursday, so not great, now only one kid home
So maybe tomorrow
I feel you, I got hand, foot, and mouth from my kids right before Christmas.
Nothing to make you feel more like a medieval peasant than boils on your hands...
We had that 4 years ago, great fun
Yes i have mpd integration for my roaming raspberry pi
Roaming pi?
Music player for in the park.
We had flu in the beginning of December, food poisoning just before Christmas, influenza before new years, coughing the first week of January, fever for a week after that, and now the rest of the story above @blazing musk
Pretty sure one person in the household has been sick since August continuously
It uses a vpn to connect to my system. And plays music to a bluetooth speaker.
So i dont have to give up my phone usage when playing music
Why would you give up your phone usage?
Also wouldn't that mean you have to use your hotspot anyway?
A bluetooth speaker on your phone prevents phone audio usage. Like scrolling facebook.
Wait so are you at the park with friends?
So wait, you want to both play music in the park and listen to the sounds of facebook videos?
A little snow never stopped anybody
Well i would be in the park for hours. Music in the background and hanging around. I like facebook groups
Doesn't translate but I say in Norwegian Fjasbok which basically is _book full of nonsense _
ah
In Hindi you have Bakchod, which means nonsense
which is also a nice word to shout
I hope it's pronounced "Facebook"
If you pronounce Facebook in Norwegian it would be Feisbuk
Which basically is fartbelly
Sounds adequate

since it seems not to fit anywhere else here... is there some dect-ule gateway i could use instead of a Fritzbox?
dect-ule?
yes
So it's a synonym for old
It does get it's own spectrum tho which is interesting
But isn't a mesh protocol and needs repeaters to get range
The only smarthome gateway using DECT-ULE other than the FritzBoxes I know is the Telekom SmartHome Home Base 2
I guess in europe it gets 10mW vs only 4mW in US, that prob didn't help adoption
Oretty standard for land line phones still
my thermostats are DECT-ULE... went full vendor lockin sadly...
Over here you always get a Landline, if you want or not and many people just got some DECT Phone on it.
people these days not appreciating a landline phone
If i do VoIP calls and connect my phone via ethernet, does that count as a landline?
my internet contract includes a (voip) telephone number
not once have I even considered getting a device for that
Depends where you are, landlines stopped being sold here around 2007 and stopped repaired around 2017, and now all copper is pulled from the ground
My parents had one from 2005-2012, we also had one from 2009-2011
Yeah they have a biz here dedicated to pulling old phone and cable wiring off your house
I'm pretty sure the copper cable got used as a draw wire to get the fibre through the conduit from the street to our house.
I should really remove all the old phone jacks around the house.
Oh we are doing it nationwide
Copper network was powered down 31st of December 2022, and they started pulling it out to recycle it and get rid of poles early 2023
Hope I get fiber before 25
They are installing it around our area but no idea if we get it to happen here
Not sure about the national coverage now, think it is 85%+ for FTTH
Connect it to the HA voice assistatnt
Similar here. They were saying 87% at EOY 2022
When I still had VoIP i considered connecting it to a vm with asterisk and if the number was in a blacklist it would be sent to a mp3 of screeching monkeys
I still have a voip phone at home, that's connected to the system at work. Good for those times you need to call vendors in weird countries, not much else.
It's an older Panasonic DECT VoIP phone with a PoE base station. Actually quite swish design, for what it is
I think that's this year's project for us. Then that ugly legacy SIP VoIP system can finally go away and stop being my problem
I generally try and stay out of the MS products wherever possible ๐
My first Voice Assistant was an analog phone connected to a VoIP box i actually paid money for. Totally worth it! โค๏ธ https://www.facebook.com/groups/HomeAssistant/permalink/3495386990732646/
Still going to have different signal intensities and different symbols
IME Zigbee is way easier to block or accidentally jam than wifi is
I had a wireless mouse that would knock out all Zigbee devices in a 5m radius when it was on
The fixture has a foil sheet on the top presumably to reflect light back down to the ground that I think is causing issues
Interesting, I haven't managed to kill the connection to any Ziggy in my house ever
That mouse would also cause issues with nearby bluetooth devices or video game controllers but not wifi
My door sensor in my mailbox keeps freezing and killing the battery :(
Just replaced it two weeks ago, already dead
I'm tempted to trench a power line out into my yard. I could replace all my crappy solar powered lights with hard wired lights and run a wire to an esp32 or something with a contact sensor for the mailbox
What one do you have?
-27 later tonight
Mine uses these tiny-ass lithium cells that can't maintain current below -10 or so
1620 batteries
I think mine uses 2450's

Could someone help me understand this
I'm trying to setup a 3 way switch with this relay
I've only got one travel wire
In the current configuration I have white neutrals (for the load and main) coming in, hot black input 120v AC and the black output load/light
This allows me to toggle the light via HA
Now I want to re implement my three way switches
There's a switch upstairs (supplying the mains power)
The blank wires should not look out of the device. That might short under some circumstances
I'm testing was gonna fix all that
This heads down to the junction with the relay
That's where the downstairs switch used to be
So how do I tap into those s1 and s2 terminals?
When you are new to a group, sometimes it's hard to fit in. New-to-Linux users often find that it is hard for them to fit in with longtime Linux users. So here are some tips on how you can start acting like a longtime Linux user...so you can fit in.

One should be the wire formerly going from the grid to your switches and the other one formerly going from the switches to the light.
No
I like how you got eraser marks on a digital image
I actually didn't make it
Some fella In a electrical Discord did.. more so seems to want to debate why I'm even trying to implement an iot device in the first place
You'd want either end of your spdt switches to go to s1 and s2, whenever the connection between s1 and s2 changes state the sonoff switch will toggle L Out's state.
That's what I was thinking in basic terms
But I'm struggling to imagine the wiring
I've got one red travel wire from the 2nd switch upstairs and that's it.. so I have to adapt something
Here's their official wiring diagram
If you only want one switch then just one terminal on the switch goes to s1 and the other terminal goes to s2.
I want two
But I've only got one travel wire
I'm assuming I connect that to my toggle switch terminal downstairs
And then I've gotta complete the circuit with a second travel wire?
Normally a switch is wired from load -> switch -> appliance, with the zbmini you want it wired zbmini -> switch -> zbmini
Which is why none of my zbmini's actually have the switch wired up, heh
Couldn't I just use the two white neutrals
One from the load and the other from the switch upstairs
Tie those together
And branch it out
One lead to the zigbee mini
I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but I'd suggest trying to find a friend who knows more to come over and help you if you're uncertain.
And the other to my switch
It's not great to DIY this stuff if you're entirely unfamiliar with house wiring.
I've got no one ๐คฃ
I'm familiar with it
I'm just not familiar with this particular scenario
Basically for the zbmini the switch should be taken entirely out of your mains circuit, it's only wired to the zbmini.
This is the switch upstairs
I've confirmed that the red is a traveler to the downstairs switch (zbmini junction)
And one of the blacks is a hot from the mains
Being carried down stairs
Before I cut them, the left switch is the one in question
This is the downstairs switch
Top right black is the mains hot
Red is the traveler
And the bottom right black is my loads common
Basic three way for a house
Now we've changed to this
The neutrals white are the load and switch upstairs.
And the one black is the hot mains line coming in from the switch upstairs
And the black hot output is heading to the light/load
The wire to the left is my travel
So since the travel carries no current I know I should be putting it on my switch downstairs where the zigbeemini is located
I can run an additional black wire from the bottom terminal on my switch to the s1 terminal on the zigbeemini
But I'm needing another travel wire to complete the parallel circuit
So what do I do from here?
If I should be relying on the zigmini to provide low current to the switches
Then using the traditional hot that's coming from the upstairs switch that's currently powering the zigmini is out of the question correct?
So the last idea I can come up with is using the neutrals to make a "virtual" travel wire to the upstairs switch?
Unless I only need the one travel line
Personally I'd get rid of the switches, wire the zbmini up to your device, and get Zigbee switches to control it over HA.
Those are pricey
yea but I hate running wires, lol.
Not to mention I don't want battery operated appliances
Understandable, ahaha it drives me crazy too
None of my wiring is 'smart home' friendly, I could do so much more if I just had neutral running to my switch boxes
I thought all the inovelli and zooz stuff worked no neutral
You just need a bypass if you're running a very low wattage led fixture off it
I'm not sure how those would work replacing a three-way switch though
Depends on the brand
Some will sell a 'dumb' 2nd switch
But you can also bind switches in zwave/zigbee so be mirror of each other
And just delete the traveler all together
That's what I did with my inovelli
I have a stairwell with a master load switch and 2 other slaves, I just z-wave bound them to mirror state and they work even when HA is down
I wish I could just replace everything with ge zigbee smart switches
They have 3way ones with a "slave" switch addon
I wanted full smart switch for the light bar notifications
But you can actually keep a dumb switch in the 2nd box and wire it up to most smart switches even
I've got one and I'm really pleased with it.. but paying 30-60 bucks a switch gets pricey when doing the whole house
Oh for sure, I splurged when I moved into this house to do them all
Yea, I bought as few as I could and did as much automation as I could with cheaper door and presence sensors
Does it work? Like if the dumb switch is toggles will the 3 way smart switch still function as expected?
I have 8 zigbee dimmers around, they're all battery powered
When we move here I think I'm willing to splurge too ๐คญ
I'm too impressed with these ones from ge
Tho we verging into #hardware-archived for sure lol

The Aurora Smart Bulb Dimmer provides the comfort and convenience that you can count on with your Philips hue light bulbs.
I smashed one by accident while moving furniture but other than that they've been fine
My house at least has neutral
But who knows when ya move
Also neutral doesn't matter if you have a smart bulb in the fixture
It'll always be on
If he's using a zbmini he probably doesn't have a smart bulb
I'm trying to avoid smart bulbs
Even though that's the only zigbee device stores seem to sell local to me
Home Depot here has a small selection of Zigbee switches but they're all really overpriced
Like $100 for a switch
I like the in wall relays because they can be super cheap bulk and off brand
Isn't inovelli like 60-70?
The zbminis are nice because they can do other things too
My homedepot doesn't even have em
I have my bathroom exhaust fans and ceiling fans all controlled by zbminis
I'm using one currently as a power cut off for my wyze video doorbell
My doorbell is wired to the S1/S2 on a zbmini and I look for a state change on it to send a notification that my doorbell has been pressed
