I bought a namron zigbee rgbw too, but I haven't had time to install it yet

#

it was $12 too

#

but I don't use rgb at all in general, so it was more for testing purposes

prisma briar
#

I don't use the RGB a whole lot but I do sometimes and I like that it's available.

#

I had my lights flickering like a candle on halloween and I'm going to set my porch lights to alternate between green and red for christmas.

clear ferry
#

I considered buying gledopto RGBW GU10 for my outdoor lights

#

but I've been so happy with my tradfri CT GU10 outdoors

prisma briar
#

I went with 100w equivalent WiZ bulbs for my outdoor blubs

#

And 60w equivalent ones for indoor use

clear ferry
#

The tradfris I have are 5w led

#

whatever that equates to in old numbers

prisma briar
#

And my kitchen/bathrooms are on warm white zigbee bulbs that only dim

clear ferry
#

5 is apparently 50w

#

oh it's that easy, x10

prisma briar
#

I also have 6 hue dimmable floodlight bulbs for my yard lights.

#

I should have just got a zigbee module like a zbmini for those.

clear ferry
#

are you lighting up the entire state whenever you turn on the outdoor lights ?

#

My front would be 6x50w, that I run at 50% power roughly, back of house is 4x50w that I run at 50% power, and I have motion floodlight now that is 20w led, so 200w for the driveway

prisma briar
#

One fixture covers my driveway, one covers my front yard, one covers my back yard. Each fixture takes two bulbs.

clear ferry
prisma briar
#

My driveway light waits for my garage door to open before it turns on and the other two are on motion sensors and are also controlled by my front/back doors opening

#

My motion sensors also have lux meters on them so I have them set to only turn on when it's dark outside

#

I have my windows set to turn on the closest floodlight when they're opened too

umbral cliff
#

And that's why I've got the unifi controller using docker. Update is one script. Not had any issues there (well except when I set another container to the same port as their identifier port lol but that's user error)

#

If something breaks that's based on the install blow it away and just recreate it

prisma briar
#

That blows away all my configuration too though.

#

Updating it wouldn't have been as annoying as it was if not for the update I wanted to run trying to skip a major version of MongoDB and failing because the version it wanted to use couldn't update a database created two versions ago, only from the previous version. I did eventually think to look for a settings export/import in the controller, but I still ended up having to factory reset and re-adopt my APs to get the reinstalled controller to connect afterwards.

#

Basically all the settings export/import managed to keep was my ssids

umbral cliff
prisma briar
#

Yea, but all the weird issues I get with the controller are with it corrupting the database or with version mismatches, that's what needs recreated.

#

Or restored from backup anymore

#

I guess I could have stepped through the docker container versions to update the database

umbral cliff
#

Probably would've been fine to jump anyway, or given its docker an update is 2 lines to run, can stay even more up to date

prisma briar
#

I assume I just didn't update for forever and their installer is too stupid to figure that out, and they didn't actually skip that many major versions of MongoDB in one go.

#

The point of putting it on a locked down vlan with no in/out access was to not need to manage updating it though. >.>

umbral cliff
#

Locked down vlan yet still has a connection to the internet via the devices it talks to lol

#

Otherwise how else would it know to force you to upgrade

prisma briar
#

It doesn't unless I let it connect outwards.

umbral cliff
#

So how did I know to force an update

prisma briar
#

The app on my phone updated and is now refusing to connect.

#

I can vpn in to that vlan from my phone.

umbral cliff
#

Ah

#

Just don't use the app think

prisma briar
#

Yea, but the app generally is more convenient on mobile than their browser interface.

umbral cliff
#

I rarely use the browser interface either. Only if I want to set a static IP for a device, otherwise it just works in the background

prisma briar
#

And it also had my randomly generated password for the interface stored in the app that I don't know offhand

#

I don't connect to my controller often, I was just trying to see if this wiz bulb was connecting at all.

#

So I wanted to look at the client list

umbral cliff
#

Honestly if youre having trouble with unifi then look at the tplink omada

They're the next best thing iirc

Hi guys, I would like to build a closed HA system (without permanent internet access).
From what I read most devices, lights, switches, sockets, ... require some sort of cloud integration.
Do you know which brands/models of devices support offline integration?

orchid rose
#

No HA support on this channel (read the topic). There are tons of devices that have offline integrations. #hardware-archived is the channel you want

silent doveBOT
#
The topic of this channel is:

@floral surge There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that. If you can't work out which is relevant, start in #general-archived.

If it's a question about the HA Yellow see #yellow-archived, and #330990055533576204 for the Blue. Install related problems go to your Installation Method channel.

No politics, religion, or any other obviously contentious topics! Please ensure you've read the Code of Conduct (https://www.home-assistant.io/code_of_conduct/), and #rules.

If you found this server and want to know what it's about, start with the web site: https://www.home-assistant.io/

Synology nas. It eats up an nvme in less than 6 months. I wont run cache anymore at least. Wont have much performance difference anyway. Not risking loosing the array cause the nvme is dying overnight

that's a shitty implementation of cache if there is potential data loss if cache dies

Let me tell you about my friend CoW

For installing any Linux OS, look for a guide from somewhere reputable like Digital Ocean

Linux file paths make so much more sense IMO than Windows' silly drive letters

sullen bluff

ehhhhhh

They won't get everything right 100% of the time, but you can copy and paste the commands and it's all documented nicely.

#

And honestly, the install guide on the Debian site should get you through

It's kind of a litmus test, if you can work your way through it you'll be fine. If you're Tech Tips Linus and screw up PopOS, god help you.

ive used ubuntu for years (technically)

#

mainly for just hosting web/game servers lmao

#

(I still suck with it but it is cool)

#

seems like ubuntu just doesnt like my server hardware or the way my raid is setup or something, every time ive installed ubuntu it took literal DAYS of troubleshooting

rapid plinth
static schooner
#

at least we can all agree that using a backslash to separate path components is the devil's work, right? right?

rapid plinth
#

windows drive letters have a (mostly) direct relationship with the physical hardware of the machine, but, are not descriptive at all aside from some very minimal conventions dating all the way back to DOS

static schooner
#

that ceased being true long, long ago

#

now they're just 26 letters representing various mount points

#

you might have one that represents your boot drive, but the rest? mostly arbitrary. and network shares?

rapid plinth
#

the convention is, or was, "A: is your floppy disk, B: is a second floppy disk if you have one, C: is your OS drive, and everything else is D: and after"
In modern day practice it really has become "A: and B: don't exist, C: is your OS drive, and everything else is lettered sequentially from D onward in order of when the OS first becomes aware of them, unless you specify otherwise"

#

Some companies have informal conventions for mapped network drives but that's about it

#

*nix FHS and derivatives, by contrast, completely dispense with the idea that anyone should care about the physical shape of the machine (with the sole exception of removable devices mounted in /media...sometimes), which rubs me the wrong way tbh, especially when network shares get involved

static schooner
#

mounting things into a directory in a useful place in the filesystem, named with its purpose, such that it's just part of the larger filesystem, seems way more intuitive to me

#

and regarding the drive letter assignment, I think we're in agreement on that

#

C: is the only constant, the rest are largely arbitrary

#

but in contrast, the letters themselves mean nothing

rapid plinth
#

when it comes to directory structure, Windows and Linux both have very similar problems where 99% of the folder hierarchy is de facto reserved for the OS to do whatever, and that remaining 1% is all kinda crammed into 2 or 3 folders with no formal structure

#

Windows has Program Files and Users etc, Linux has /opt (sometimes /srv) and /home

#

Which, if your OS is in and of itself quite large (by the standards of the permanent storage media at your disposal) or you have some esoteric benefit to splitting up the OS itself across multiple volumes, yeah it's useful to be able to mount a volume to any arbitrary folder, but there really isn't a useful place in the filesystem for a volume dedicated to user data, so it winds up under /media or /mnt or /run/user/1000/gvfs depending on the user's technical aptitude and laziness levels

#

I suppose it's still better than drive letters

I get writers block, so I appreciate it giving me a bit of direction on what to write next. I have to sanitize the output ofc

#

A lot in the world isn't origional, just increments 🙂

#

For chip design, for example, as processes get smaller, math and rules just need tweaking according to the new constraints. But the fundamentals are still there.

Though i'd rather not dox myself, so not going more into that aspect

#

But anyways, the pace that things are changing is terrifying for me.
