The idea of using automations to manage other automations helped me out some. I've a pir (aqara motion sensor to be specific) in the kitchen that turns on the lights if its lux value is low enough...problem was that the dogs sleep in the kitchen and set off the pir (and thus the lights).
Problem solved by having that automation switched off at bed-time but enabled if there's motion in the downstairs hall.

I'm going to borrow another one of your other ideas, @merry birch once I get another smart plug or two... The indoor camera we have in the kitchen for keeping an eye on the dogs is coincidentally placed to view whoever is eating at the kitchen table. I've been spotted being a hungry fella by my wife at work when wanting to show off the dogs when it's my lunchtime 😂....
Hahaha, that's a good one! I have some of the Ewelink/Sonoff USB power controllers for things like that. Super handy
that seems very useful - the camera is currently plugged into a block adaptor such as the one at https://www.videk.co.uk/section.php/1418/1/3-way-uk-mains-power-block-adapters because there isn't a twin socket there, and the kitchen fan/extractor gets its power that way too.
This is great - I don't need to get either a second socket put in or go the way of a 2x or 4x extension lead or such 🙂
Thanks!
No worries! The only thing I'd say is if you want to use them on a multi USB charger (like this sort of thing: https://www.anker.com/us/products/a2123?variant=37436925477014) then a short USB extension cable is well worth having.
@merry birch oh I just remembered, you talked about automating the vacuum robot and I have a pretty simple setup that works really well.
-
I setup a counter helper that is increased whenever the robot finishes a run and go to dock
-
Reset the counter every night
3: one automation that starts the vacuum every day at 11 but only if I’m not at home and if the counter helper is at 0
4: one automation that runs whenever I’m leaving the house but only if the helper is at 0
This way the vacuum never bothers me when I’m at home and it still runs whenever it gets a chance
Yes, I’m working on something similar. The complication is I’m at home most days, all day. So my plan is to vacuum the side of the apartment I’m not in, unless I’m on a call then. So I need the separate zones. I started with a solution similar to what you’re recommending (input_boolean, but the same principle)—though with the caveat of I had to empty it to reset the state because otherwise it would get too full
Not a problem here, I always need to empty the robot 😂
I’m mostly at home too but since it starts even if I’m just going to the store or something it still runs a couple times a week and that’s enough most times
Sadly I don’t shop more than once a week—usually after going to my ballet class which would already trigger it 😂
I think we just isolated another problem😁
Hehe. My solution of dividing the house in two works well. Because when I cook dinner it can clean the work area and the parts it didn’t clean before
I am little behind the podcasts, so I just heard your episode @merry birch and I had to laugh at the “do not touch” room in homekit, as I solved mine the same way. Lot of similar thinking. I think Phil can drop me from the future guest list now, hh
If it works, it works!
Conditions would handle this too. Two conditions check for time window (> 9pm and <7AM) and another whether this is motion in the hall. Benefit being it is all contained in one automation.
Another way to handle the time would be to use a toggle helper that is set during bedtime. Condition would check the helper.
There's also a "time of day" helper
@blazing prawn https://youtu.be/H7GlOoJrOjU?t=132
Nope not having a bar of it.
Wifi uses significantly more energy over zigbee or zwave. So there's that to consider as well.
But let's look at it from another side. You and me are at a stadium. You're in a seat, and I'm in the middle of the field. No one else is around. We can yell at each other and communicate effectively.
Now let's fill the stadium with people. You might be able to hear me in the middle of the ground, but there is no way I can hear what you're saying over the other noise of the audience.
Same principal applies with Wifi here. The more devices and noise you're adding to your network, the harder it becomes for the network to cope. Most home routers are only designed for a small number of devices. They are not designed for every light bulb and sensor in a smart home to be connected. It just makes too much noise across the network, and everything gets affected.
I'm not an engineer, hell @flat ivy will probably tell me I don't know what I'm talking about, but that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.
It's definitely true of your general home and small business networking in my neck of the woods. A customer when I was in IT bought small business, barely managed switches for a private school and they soon learned that if a company only built a device with a number of devices in mind, weird things start to happen as soon as you hit that upper number
I recently discovered the podcast it is great, Thanks for the information. I still have to listen to 96 episodes before I'm up to date 🙂
just listened to the ep with @merry birch — great job all involved! wanted to point out a really easy way to avoid having DO NOT TOUCH rooms in homekit. posted on the forums a couple years ago but still works very well: https://community.home-assistant.io/t/ios-presence-detection-without-homekit-component-or-ha-app-totally-native/139770
(the tldr is you can use a homekit automation to call a webhook as long as your HA instance is publicly facing)
totally stealing this. doorbell thumbnail is much nicer than the LG tv notifications!
That’s a completely valid explanation for the WRT54G circa 2001, but that’s just not the case today. If you’re still running one of those on your network, then you should probably reconsider your “smart home” strategy.
Sticking your head in the sand doesn’t make your theory true, but I’m certainly not saying you have to accept the modern day reality, the choice is yours. Meanwhile, plenty of people run hundreds of devices, and their networks are fine. Just look at the r/homelab if you need evidence.
Modern networks are much more complex than your stadium screaming analogy. But specifically, your modern devices are now all on 5ghz while your smart home is all largely on 2.4ghz. But Wi-Fi isn’t a panaceas and definitely not well suited for battery devices. For me, that’s a non issue as I currently wont consider Wi-Fi battery operated devices until the battery tech improves.
For a sign of their reliability, talk to folks that have ESPHome devices on their network. Maybe let that guide your faith.
I wrote a book on Shortcuts 😉.
The problem is when an automation fails it pops up an error on screen—and my parent are not good at leaving things like alone and they will break it. The do not touch room is at least fixable remotely
The HomeKit automations with webhooks tend to flake out a lot more
have you tried it? i’ve never once had a popup in 2.5 years
Been using it for a while now. Works great
It just says “someone is at the door” which well 🤷♂️
yah im sure it will confuse us the first few times. but now that you’ve mentioned it i think a garage door version of it will also be very nice! just using the tilt sensor as the associated entity!
Home automations failing frequently causes pop ups. And when they don't they're nigh on impossible to track down as broken.
interesting! news to me. i’ve never had cause to diagnose since i’ve never had issues with home/not_home working. maybe keeping everything hardwired has helped.
Ya'll were talking about fireplaces on the podcast. I wrote the IntelliFire integration - which is a WIFI module for specific fireplaces ... so the metal doesn't seem to offer too much restiance
Very nice! Yeah I wonder if there's a reason why the Escea ones require ethernet
I have no idea - the one I have is WIFI ONLY. It has its own issues but thats not related to the wifi signal. I think its related to the board where sometimes it has dropouts/locks up for up to a minute. Maybe the processing load is too high.
The funny story is I ended up routing the ios app via Charles proxy to capture the data and found there was a polling endpoint. So I built a read-only module for HA. After posting it some folks reached out to me with the API code so now we have control logic built in. Eventually some HA folks got in touch with the devs and we were able to help them diagnose some cloud issues via our use in HA
My main use case is:
If the fireplace is on and the living room sonos is not playing any music - play fire sounds
Funny how MyQ goes down after we just recorded where I say I haven't had a problem in a long time...
Now I'm motivated to replace it again lol
Good to know it's not just me!
Hey @blazing prawn i just listened to your latest episode.
There is a hidden sensor that shows energy cost related information for items that are in the energy dashboard!
Check this out:
Make sure to untick 'hide hidden' in the entity browser
@blazing prawn / @flat ivy thanks for having me on, was fun!
Just had my app notify me the new episode dropped.
Thanks for coming on Mike! Was a fun episode
Who was Rosemary you mentioned on the show?
https://hasspodcast.io/ha112/ this ep.
I believe it's @merry birch on discord?
Oh, right. Sorry. Drew a blank. I need to relisten now!
Hello 👀
Listened to the podcast. Created an input Boolean which is a switch in HA. How do I expose that as a doorbell in homekit?
I’m on mobile right now but here’s mine https://github.com/mikeodr/Home-AssistantConfig/blob/master/packages/homekit.yaml look for linked_doorbell
Same on here https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/homekit/
Here's the exact config line:
https://github.com/mikeodr/Home-AssistantConfig/blob/master/packages/homekit.yaml#L53
And the direct link to the docs:
https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/homekit/#linked_doorbell_sensor
Thank you very much.
Not a problem.
hey @flat ivy about your not wanting to have a pir in the bathroom. how about a door sensor? that's the setup I use for the downstairs cloakroom/bathroom. I just have it set so when the door goes from "off" to "on" the lightbulb in there gets toggled.
I've got one for my ensuite door, but unless the door is always closed, its hard to reliably use this (in my case). What if someone opens the door but then doesn't go in? Too many edge cases 😦
we're always fanatic about closing the door so I've not had to worry about that edgecase - but I suppose you could have an automation that if the door is open for longer than n minutes then turn off the light regardless.
I went back and listened to the most recent episode to find the mm wave device they were discussing
Xiaomi Aqara FP1
Looks like these are mostly just available from aliexpress
There's a few on ebay with marked up prices
Anyone find them elsewhere?
I got mine on Ali Express, its pretty much only there.
I use a multi sensor approach for my bathroom. Pir temp humidity lux multisensor turns smart bulbs on, humidity spike with trend sensor turns smart fan switch on, door sensor keeps lights on even if no motion when door is closed after motion triggered, and media player (HomePod mini) state playing also keeps lights from turning off (so in winter you can keep door open to put humidity in air and lights will stay on with no motion when you’re in the shower. Pretty good solution imo. I think I still need a fp1 or ultrasonic or something in case I’m too still on the crapper lol
I looked around and ended up coming to the same conclusion. At least I found a US -> US shipper.
I’ve thought about it but agreed with @blazing prawn about too many edge cases. Def not against it if there wasn’t that though
I suppose not having any kids pretty much reduces the number of edgecases I've run into on this 😂🤦♂️
Ha yeah
@flat ivy you flipped to HomeKit for ecobee 👍 glad I brought that up
I’m glad you did too!! I actually noticed that before when i set ‘home’ or ‘away’ it would actually hold the temp (when i never asked it to) now it just goes back to its routine like it should.
Oh neat. Not a benefit I’ve noticed
Thanks for yet another great podcast @flat ivy and @blazing prawn!
I'm starting to think I need to sit down with a notepad when I listen or watch the YouTube version as I'm nearly always guaranteed to hear something I'll want to remember for later.
Incidentally, are you guys on mastodon yet?
I always add something to my todo list after a listen lol
Thanks @queen flume! I am constantly amazed at what our guests get up to in Home Assistant.
I'm not on Mastodon myself yet, @flat ivy is but I have no idea how to find his handle on there tbh
Where were all these people asking for Mastodon in 2017?
...happy blathering about on twitter, though I've been on mastodon since 2018 tbh.... 😄
https://inovelli.com/en-ca/products/blue-series-fan-switch-zigbee-3-0
Seems like my prayers for a fan controller may be answered soon 🤞
Ooooh nice!
Hi guys, thanks for the KPI podcast. I might have a solution for the tare of the bed pressure sensor. I use it for my extractor fan to turn on with humidity, but should work for pressure as well... So originally I set my bathroom extractor fan to go on when the humidity goes above 60%, but the problem is that on rainy days, the humidity is already 70%, so either I had to adjust the setpoint based on weather etc but ended up doing this: 1) I have InfluxDB running, so I created a temp sensor that queries InfuxDB for the humidity value 10 seconds ago. 2) Then I created a template sensor to calculate the difference in humidity "now" minus "10 seconds ago". So now I have a sensor that is ZERO most of the time, and whenever the humidity spikes, regardless of where it spiked from, it just shows the 10 sec increase/decrease. Code below and pictures, spike is where shower was opened and automation then turns on extractor when 10 sec increase is above 6%:
Also, if someone knows how to do this 10 sec ago sensor directly in ESPHome please let me know
Oh man. I’m so behind. Had a good audiobook and have to catch up from August!
Really looking forward to the guests judging from the titles
Which audiobook? I'm all caught up on my podcasts 😉
The Stormlight Archive series
Just got to the fully kiosk browser episode. I have a tablet inside my front door. When it opens and the alarm is on the alarm swithches to trigger pending, the tablet switches to the alarmo panel, and then back after the alarm is disabled.
Also, the camera on the tablet starts scanning for a special qr code which disarms alarmo.
I need to get alarmo higher on my todo list lol
I've used the Trend platform for that
`binary_sensor:
- platform: trend
sensors:
humidity_spike:
entity_id: sensor.temperature_sensor_1_humidity
sample_duration: 120
min_gradient: 0.16666666667 # 20/120 ie. +20% increase in 120 sec`
Keeping up my not-at-all-live commentary; in the Tile discussion I believe you are confusing iBeacon and AirTags. iBeacon is an open standard, but AirTags which are Apple Tiles do not use that as far as I am aware. It would be awesome if they did, but that would be user friendly, and Apple...
Good job Frenck for the shoutout to all the people doing the code quality changes! Those are the Real heroes of this project.
This is awesome!
alias: ALARM - scanna kod

And ```yaml

Cut down a bit for brevity, obviously.
Just the built-in qr processor https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/qrcode/ and the Fully Kiosk camera functionality of browser_mod.
Go for the robot lawn mower! You can build it yourself with an arduino brain too. I did. Though that one was kind of bad and required a lot of babysitting.
I have a real one now and that’s rock solid. I literally drop it on the lawn in April and pick it back up in November.
Registers as a vacuum in Hass.
IIRC there's a really old github issue about that. Keeps getting a lot of trafic every spring but then dies again.
It’s sort of vacuuming the lawn 🤣
I wish I had that much luck, mine can't get even through a whole run without getting stuck on my backyard, can't use it in the front as the hills are way to steep. This is with spiked wheels and weight on it. I am likely going to sell it this year
@blazing prawn I’m surprised you’re having issues with the FP1. I’m not seeing that same problem.
I have the opposite issue where it thinks I’ve left the room but I think that’s just placement
It's so annoying. It's also not just the one sensor that does it. I would say I have 3 out of 7 that consistently do it.
Pressing the reset presence button entity in Home Assistant sometimes works. But if it doesn't, then the only way is to power cycle the FP1.
If it was just one then I'd put it down to a faulty device or something moving in the room/window. But the fact its multiple makes me think it's more a bigger issue.
😓 I ordered 2 and have only put 1 into service. Is the firmware reported on them different?
Firmware: 0x00000036
This is what mine reports without issue
Yeah all mine have that Firmware as well, damn
Is this it persistently reporting your presence when you're not there?
I'm having that too
Yep!
I leave the room and it stays occupied
Pressing the soft reset presence sensor sometimes does nothing to clear it.
It's almost as if the device is frozen and needs to be hard reset.
My next option is to put some sonoff USB plugs so home assistant can kill their power
@normal heron I found more people with the same Aqara FP1 issue!
He was helping me to try to troubleshoot it the other day (well a few months ago)
Darn. Was hoping firmware difference.
Could be hardware then 🤷♂️
Is the last updated time changing Phil?
Last Seen: 2023-01-04T18:13:23 when it’s misbehaving?
Where are you two getting that firmware number?
Mine says:
update:
installed_version: 54
latest_version: 54
state: idle
Please use imgur or other image sharing web sites, and share the link here.
Image posting is blocked in most channels to discourage people from sharing text as images. Sharing text as images assumes that everybody sees the world as you do, which isn't the case. Some people are colour blind, or have visual impairment that means they can't make sense of an image of text.
I use Z2M, so at least we've narrowed down "not our Zigbee implementations" (though I did set up ZHA and test it with that before)
I want to switch to that eventually but what a pain
I’d be curious if the last seen/updated just stops. That would indicate bad zigbee connection or bad hardware.
Based on Phil’s description of the presence reset working “sometimes”
Nope, everything else is working perfectly
It did it when it was all on its lonesome on a network with a known good co-ordinator
China quality 🤷♂️
I have a second one on the way, so I'm hoping to compare and contrast
Could be the power supply also?
I should bring my second one online and see if it exhibits badly. It’s still in the box
I've tried different USB plugs
So last seen keeps updating?
It's not available, though it should be
I'm using the one that came in the box 😦
Ditto on the one from the box. Though mines a North American plug
I've got a couple paired on Z2M and a few others on ZHA. Doesn't make a difference unfortunately. Still the same issue
I’d be very curious if the other values are updating when it’s frozen.
Get more info then ask about in #zigbee-archived 🤷♂️
Next time it happens I'll take a look at the device to see what previous events there are
I’m just guessing as I’m not seeing it
Wifi interference? But rosemary says coodinator is good. 😓
Anyways just finished 2023.1 episode and I’m not seeing the problem
Nah my ZigBee is pretty rock solid otherwise
Pressing the soft reset presence sensor
I was listening to the latest podcast episode. I've been automating my Ikea IDASEN desk for nearly a year now - it has been fun and works well. I think you said that you can't get the desk height or something? but I have that fine.
I alternate my desk hourly automatically between sitting and standing (with a bunch of extra conditions and stuff around it)
I was wondering something similar. I have a Bekant and was wondering what they did to control their desk. Mine just has manual up and down buttons.
There’s documented tear downs where they solder on an esp board / interface with the pcb it comes with for various analog motorized desks
It’s easiest to find one compatible with a tutorial then buy a desk but a lot of them are all the same just rebranded
The Ikea Idasen has bluetooth, so I then control it with a esp32 using this; j5lien/esphome-idasen-desk-controller
I thought it might be quite flaky but it has been surprisingly stable and reliable
That's pretty cool. I've already had my bekant for a while now though. It looks like there's something called megadesk for Bekant's. It looks like you'd need to install the esp32 separately though
It wasn't completely clear from the docs how the esp32 interfaces with the megadesk board though
@merry birch @blazing prawn What issues are you two seeing with your FP1? I haven't had any that I know of.
It detects motion and the occupancy detected binary sensor never turns off
... Though I just looked again and it's off. Yay!
Ah yes, I have heard of that one...I assumed that was why there's the "reset nopresence status" option.
I've found that sometimes it can take a long time to turn off, but it always does eventually.
For me it seems very counterintuitive that it would need resetting or indeed take a long time to timeout when it's supposed to be so good at detecting motion
I never use that option, I wonder if it's related to what other devices are within it's field of view?
Very few, and certainly nothing that anything else ever registers as moving
Yeah for me I have a bedroom that is occupied for hours according to the sensor, even though I was only there a few minutes.
Sometimes the no presence reset button works, other times I have to power cycle the sensor to get it to update
Did you guys discover the use case of the stookalarm integration already? 😊😊
We live in densely populated areas, under some weather circumstances a BBQ or a log fire in your fire pit will pose a health risk to those around you. So this sensor gives guidance when to take that into account
Its so fascinating that sensor. I think its great, just can't imagine a place where something like that would be needed
I’ll share a satellite img of my area, you’ll understand 😀
https://e1.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZ87zbZLgt56hmdxzYEchNV2Nh2Yzv3f5Sk
here's my area. there's 40+ 3 story houses in a rectangle with all backyards facing each other. this is how close we live to each other. taking health & environment conditions into account before lighting the BBQ is inevitable 🙂
this Home Assistant assisting with Assist is nice. How do I assist the project by getting more intents added, does anyone know? Can anyone...assist me?
sorry. I'll get my coat
#devs_voice-archived has plenty of detail on how you can provide assistance on creating the best voice assistant with Home Assistant's Assist feature 😛
I've just forked and cloned the intents repo at the least 😉 thanks @merry birch 🙂
Wow yep makes total sense why that would be very useful
(Listening to https://hasspodcast.io/ha125/ ) One thing that hasn’t been touched with voice is who does state management. I want state kept locally but use voice through a provider, and that’s still too difficult today (without a LOT of duplicate config). For example, if I am using a Ring doorbell, I have to add it in HA and separately in Alexa. Meanwhile, Ring actually keeps the state in the cloud and both talk to the cloud (though HA can also talk local)…it ends up as a mess.
Ideally I’d use HA for everything and Alexa only for voice commands, but everything would be available as “passthrough” with ease.
This is a great point! We'd really need to see the latency improve on things so that when Alexa/voice assistants need to get information its lightning fast
Hey Guys, I love HA podcast, lately I am playing it in my car everyday. Its so much joy listening the journey of others and relevance to my HA experience. Great job to Phil / Rohan and others are doing.
I have been using Home assistant since it launch and done tons work personally /professionaly and helped people around me with more awareness of HA.
I was curious to learn what the criteria to come to podcast and share my experience around it? My background is in software engineering and enterprise building automation. Let me know.
Hey @inner surge thanks for listening!
We don't have any requirements. We really want to give a voice to everyone in the community as there's always a different way to skin a cat.
Flick us an email to feedback@hasspodcast.io and I'll be in touch with next steps
I have gotten them stuck a few times, usually pressing the reset button in ZHA resolves.
Question for Alastair…
If he’s using arping for iOS presence I assume he’s disabled the private wifi address? As by default iOS randomized the MAC for wifi tracking prevention.
I was wondering as well and I assume so. Although ios keeps one mac per ssid, so you could roll even with the one you get initially.
Oh is that the case? I thought it was every connection
Question to Alastair, when you mention hacs integration arp+ping for presence detection, do you mean ping+arp? Thanks
https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT211227
TIL.
Although there's this "hiccup":
if your device hasn’t joined the network in 6 weeks, it uses a different private address the next time it connects to that network
I LOVED (even more than the others) the episode with Alistair. Suggestion to Phil, Rohan: would be nice to include links of mentionned hard/software in the notes. Would buy you guys a beer. Two if you could add chapters so one could jump.
Thanks @fiery pond
Yep, we try to add links to products and repos where we can.
For chapters, we've started doing that on the YouTube version. Still working out how we can automate things a bit better to get them in for the podcast/audio version
I wonder how the guys at the Self Hosted podcast do it. I did a quick glance thru what I listen to and they seem to be the only one I found that use chapters.
Its actually quite tricky for some reason. I just pushed out 2023.5 episode and attempted to add chapters to the MP3. It may or may not work for you though (I've read it depends on the host of the podcast as well). Let me know if they work or not for you
It's working for me in Antennapod. Looks like there are three chapters? (intro, 2023.5, and year of the voice)
🙂
Ooooh nice! Can't believe that works now
I'd throw up a screenshot but that doesn't seem possible in Discord - unless I'm being dumb and not noticing something obvious
Chapters also work in Overcast
Listening to the latest episode… to run the robo vacuum once a day you could have an automation turn on a input boolean when it turns and only run if it’s off. Then use another automation to reset that input boolean once a day
Philip, I can help with the logic for finished washing machine in home assistant and power sensor. Not sure if you are on discord though
Don't think he is on any socials
ah, never mind then
Thanks for the episode today. I was looking for the flashable esp32 display you were talking about without success. If anyone has a link or useful search term I would be greatful
Oh man… my wife won a frame TV and it was a screen quality upgrade. But does it suck to try and automate. Doesn’t turn on reliably etc. awful UI from Samsung too.
Would never have bought that myself.
Hi. I have a frame, and it responds with the Media Player integration. Though I agree that the UI sucks
I def don’t love automating the frame. The media player works but the whole thing is a hassle for whatever reason
Lol i unfortunately made the mistake of buying it. Though winning it seems great 👍🏽
@maiden light I converted your message into a file since it's above 15 lines :+1:
Thank you for reading the release notes for me and calling out things I miss when I do read the release notes, wish I would have found this sooner 🙂
Hey @maiden light what is "stop by the way"?
@blazing prawn it's the annoying thing Alexa does where she tries to sell you other stuff or get you to use other services
Oh yes! Like when I set a new timer and she says, "by the way would you like to enable xxx skill"?
@blazing prawn exactly!
So when you're playing a sound from the echo, what is it doing? Playing a recording of you asking her to stop doing those? Or is it something supported by the Alexa media player component?
It's natively supported by the Alexa Media Player HACS integration: https://github.com/custom-components/alexa_media_player/wiki#run-custom-command
Hey All, I just listened to the last episode and there was talk about training a TTS to use your own voice or whatever you sample with and keep it private. Anyone have links for how that's done?
I wonder what the training is for that
This might set you in the right direction
Hey folks, I noticed the discussion about using Aqara vibration sensors for washers and dryers continued in the latest episode. I wanted to check if y'all had seen this: https://community.home-assistant.io/t/zha-aqara-vibration-sensor-set-sensitivity/414810
I couldn't get the blueprint working but running the update directly via ZHA did the trick. I'm still early in my experimentation for this laundry project, but have definitely noticed increasing the sensitivity these sensors helps a lot! Good luck!
This might set you in the right
Woah! I had no idea about this! I’ll look into it; thank you!
@blazing prawn did anyone complain about the weird stereo separation of the intro music, especially the first few bars that are left speaker only?
Yep a couple of people when we first changed the theme
Add me to the list 😉
Hey folks - listening to the latest episode with fellow Melburnian, John and wondered if anyone has some starter links for doing Arduino stuff? John has inspired me to make my own sensors!
anyone else surprised by the ad insertion? tbh I thought my player had skipped forward to the next item in the queue! 🤪 not complaining - just a bit surprised is all
Same - wasn't sure if it was on the HASS end or the PocketCasts end
It must be the HASS end, as I'm using Antennapod so it's the only thing in common...
yep just got to that point also: 45:13.
It's weird as I don't get if I listen to the file directly.
https://redcircle.com/shows/home-assistant-podcast
@blazing prawn @flat ivy did you know about this?
have you checked out https://esphome.io/ super easy to start with and integration to HA is magic
I just listened to the Spotlight on Custom Components episode from 8th July '19 again and there's an ad inserted in it (a local one too for an Irish electrical retailer).
Obviously I've no problem with what the guys want to do with their podcast (it is @blazing prawn's and @flat ivy's podcast after-all), but it is a bit distracting. I'm wondering if there's now supposed to be a membership scheme to be able to avoid these new ads.
From a cynical point of view, I'd hope Nabu Casa are aware of this, especially if they might think they have sole sponsorship rights and are expecting to be the only company to be mentioned in the episodes. I'd hate for them to withdraw over this.
Just my unsolicited two cents on the matter!
The fact it isn't in the Youtube video makes me think we are the only ones that know its happening and the podcast host (RedCircle) have changed their plan and now inserting ads
if the advertisers could be curated as companies/products compatible with Home Assistant... 🙂
not sure if I need to hear about luxuriously firm mattresses 😉
Hey mate,
Confirming this is us. The podcast is getting so popular my own host has threatened to kick me off my server. Around the same time another listener reached out introducing us to our new host RedCircle and their ad platform.
There's a few goals, and I'll try talk to these on the next release episode (now I know that the ads are actually working) but ultimately @flat ivy and I won't get rich off this.
If we can get enough ad rev, in an ideal world we'll be able to do extra things like transcribing/captioning all our episodes (and not just the crummy AI stuff that fails hard when we say things like HASS, ESPHome, ZigBee). The big one would be outsourcing some of the editing and post- recording stuff so we can ultimately produce more episodes (weekly episodes anyone?)
We do have a patreon and would be more than happy to offer an ad-free feed for subscribers. We've had a patreon page for a while, but we haven't wanted to spruke it or be annoying about it. If there's interest in that offering, please shout out.
At the end of the day these ads are currently geo-restricted (I actually have no idea what ads your getting, would love some details on them) and time based. If we decide that ads are ruining it for everyone and not helping us grow the show, then we can move to something like Spotify/Anchor which will host us for nothing.
We're very appreciative of the Nabu sponsorship and hope to maintain that relationship moving forward. We wouldn't be here today without their support. Unlike ads which are paid by download, the Sponsorship is per episode so I hope they continue to support future episode creation
can't say fairer than that @blazing prawn , and thanks for a novels-worth of an explanation, much appreciated... both for that and the hardwork you do in getting each episode out.
Another point here is we do get companies wanting us to have episodes dedicated to them, which we've tried to push back on. With our new host though, we can now offer them advertising spots and have them time boxed. Maybe Philips Hue has a Christmas sale coming up. Rather than a whole episode dedicated to them, we can offer them an ad spot which then runs out after Christmas and doesn't stay in everyone's feed forever
a whole episode would be a lot indeed
@blazing prawn, I think if you are going down the route of producing more episodes, on say a weekly basis please don't risk burn-out. you both do deserve your down-time more than we do more episodes.
with a little cajoling you might be able to rotate through more co-hosts though? I know @merry birch offered to step in and help when she was on with you.
that way you to pump out more episodes but avoid the risk of burnout. maybe. i hope.
Yep for sure. Right now its the post-production and editing which slows us down. So if we can pay for that to go away, we'll have more time to focus on the show and getting to our long list of guests.
thanks for the update, at least now I know it was meant to be there and not me confusing myself about which podcast I'm listening to
I would also be 100% into a membership/Patreon style adfree feed. Similar to https://atp.fm/member
If you have potential sponsors I would much rather prefer the two of you talking about the product/service but know that is also extra work and might not always be possible.
Keep up the great work. 💙
Thanks mate. Unfortunately as we're not a US based podcast (even though our audience is majority US based) getting access to host-read ads is harder.
With that said with our new host we can sell these ourselves and make it more bespoke for our community
Hi everyone,
@flat ivy and I are due to record the next release episode of the podcast in 48 hours from the time of this message (so you can work out your own timezone).
We're inviting anyone who wants to come watch us record live. If you've got a mic (webcam optional but appreciated) we can also accept live call-ins to the show for you to ask us any questions about Home Assistant, the podcast, life, or the 2023.9 release.
If you want to come along, react to this message and if there's enough interest I'll post a link in this channel when we're going to record
I won't be able to, but would you mind if I shared this elsewhere (in the irishtechcommunity.slack.com #smarthome channel)?
Go for it
Thanks
Any chance you would be willing to be transparent about hosting costs? If that is the issue, I bet people would come forward to cover them. I've listened to thousands of podcast episodes over the years, and this is the first dynamically inserted add I've heard, and it was quite jarring. I would absolutely pay to make them go away
Are you guys going live on YT?
I’m also intrigued as something like
pinecast.com is $10 and Libsyn is $20 both with unlimited downloads.
@umbral snow also worth noting they’ve done it for a long time. Probably with their own money on equipment, software and services.
It’s hard work, even when I get to do it as part of my full time job
Hey Scott no. It'll be a recorded session for the podcast. So it'll be the raw view of all the mistakes, and all the pretalk we leave out
Hey mate,
Hosting costs are just part of the puzzle. With the amount of downloads we get, some hosting providers won't accept us on their base tiers. However we could do something free like Spotify/Anchor.
Personally I don't like that Spotify is making some podcasts exclusive on their platform. Podcasts have survived for years being open feeds. So would rather not host with them.
Hosting is only part of our costs though. Software and apps we use to record, edit, track analytics, master take the biggest chunk. Our hosting fees aren't the biggest expense, but my hosting provider prompted the move to another podcast host.
Our goal with ads (and of course any additional revenue) is to grow the podcast. Get it break even enough to then start taking some of our own load off. Editing, captions, publishing etc
I'll be on the lookout for a patreon supported ad-free feed in the future. Thanks for making the podcast!
Ah ok cool. What platform will the live recording be on then?
We use a service called Riverside. Just runs in your browser similar to Google Meet/YouTube
Anyways, I'd be interested in checking it out. Traveling this weekend so not sure if the times will line up but if I'm free I'd watch!
@blazing prawn hope the recording went well, I've dropped you a DM if you want assistance with post-production
Nice to hear in the new episode that the install/setup process has been made a bit more easy
@blazing prawn i PMed you
Had a spare vibration sensor I could never get to work with the dryer as a detection method. After it was mentioned on the last few podcasts I dug a bit more and as noted you can adjust the sensitivity.
For the particular one I had I found some helpful instructions here: https://joshmccarty.com/how-to-increase-sensitivity-on-aqara-vibration-sensor-with-home-assistant-zha/
Now I can readily detect and remind (nag...) when the wash has been left sitting and not moved to the dryer.
automated nagging is so much better than wife nagging, eh?
I’m not the one who forgets 🤣
yes, I can be a jerk to the robots
So here's another one for the clown music. Schneider Electric/LK have discontinued their IHC controller: https://www.lk.dk/professionel/nyheder/ihc-controller-udgaar/
Farrrk. We've already got Hue for this month!!
Hmm maybe the Google translate is off, but I think this is actually a good response
The IHC controllers that are already installed can still be used. If these controllers break down, you can also contact technical support who can offer targeted solutions to the specific case.
The current available firmware on lk.dk can still be downloaded, just as we will continue to provide support on the IHC system.
Under the circumstances, yes. But still, there are people with whole house installations, that are fubar if their controller dies and can't be repaired.
Listening to the latest episode and you guys talked about the HVAC setup. Boy do I have something to show you guys. Ive been waiting to talk about it on here till its 100% up but now I cant resist. So we did a custom home design and we zoned off every floor and then asked them to put in dampeners in the ventilation of the 2 offices and 3 bedrooms. The end goal is to control the temp of every room (+-2F from the main temp). I created a Arduino device that controls the whole zone and the room dampeners but if something happens with Home Assistant my husband can use the normal dumb thermostat. When a signal is detected from the dumb thermostat it switches to passthrough mode and the HVAC is controlled by the dumb thermostat and all of the room dampeners just open up. Im in the process of creating a one gang thermostat which is like 90% complete, my hope is to get it up this weekend. It has a AHT10 sensor, 4 buttons and a micro OLED screen. Im pretty excited. Thought I would share 🙂
Here is the arduino board I used, was too excited when I found it. The 8 inputs connect to the thermostat and the relays go to the zone controller. 4 buttons switch between the 3 states (ON, OFF, PASSTHROUGH) the forth send the current state to home assistant. https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804585192925.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.5.21ef1802D7x0CV&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa
This is slick!
I soldered up one thermostat and working on the second now. It fit perfectly in the 1 gang outlet. Just need to go and buy a faceplate. Its being powered by 5v coming off a buck converter on the HVAC system and communicating to the MySensors gateway via RS485. All over a cat 6 cable. Was nervous the long 4 floor run would cause too much noise on the RS485. Nope, it worked very well. Now I just have to see if my placement of the AHT10 temp sensor works. My second design has the sensor outside of the plate. Well take a picture of the thermostat and share.
https://i.imgur.com/N5cTxlo.jpg here is the working thermostat. All data on the OLED comes from home assistant, its controlling a Generic Thermostat on Home Assistant. Right now the zone is in PASSTHROUGH being controlled by the normal Honeywell until I get the other thermostat up.
Rohan, I'm ripping out myQ and using a esp device with relay now, I'm done with it lol...
I'm not paying $45 a year to use it from my car... or $179 USD for 5. years or $299 for 10 years, rediculous.
Speaking of myQ @flat ivy / @blazing prawn
My collegue at work just sent me this:
https://paulwieland.github.io/ratgdo/
https://github.com/ratgdo/esphome-ratgdo
This github project lets you DIY or buy their pre-built board.
I'm going to follow this trail and report back when I get it running!
Oh man I know. Such a piss off; I think I’m going to replace the controller too. Mines older/still needs a GW so I’m hoping they don’t have it locked out / proprietary
Ooo I’ll check this out thanks!!🙏🏽
Oh Rohan... since your a SWO resident... you said your water meter is 443mhz somehow? Wondering if maybe mine is the same....
I was looking at my water meter and the brand is Aclara. Googling it I think it uses a different frequency than 443mhz… also, it mentions the data is encrypted and not sure how to access it.
It was really refreshing to hear MyQ and Phillips Hue called out publicly for their stratedgy to monetize users even more. This is what I love about HA. Nabu Casa is clear and open about what you get for the money you give them. You don't have to buy anything but if you do then you get to take the easy setup path and support a project that has meaningful impact.
oh no, my wife used to live there, so i was there a ton.
Was there a final call on an ad free feed patreon or something yet? This episodes ad was… jarring.
And ignore me I found it.
Now to figure out how to get the RSS feed... I don't understand this UI yet.
Oh hmm can't find a feed, is that supported?
Yep apparently I haven't ticked a box to enable it. I'll get that added in shortly.
I've only been uploading our recent episodes, as Patreon doesn't have an a easy way to bulk-import older episodes
I’m not personally concerned about the back catalog but do appreciate you enabling that ❤️
Could the team put some news out about how much support Nabu Casa is throwing to the podcast and how financials are going? I'm all for supporting content creation. Also trying to figure out the balance of ad-free subscription vs. my Nabu Casa subscription. The new ad system is one of the worst experiences I've had in a podcast, I'm afraid. Jarring (no transitions). Bad ads (low relevance to the content). Included even on old episodes. I'm in a time-to-support-or-unsubscribe moment and would like to end up on the support side. 🙂
Could the team put some news out about
@blazing prawn ... Check your HA logs for:
If you are having problems joining new devices, are missing sensor updates, or have issues keeping devices joined, ensure your coordinator is away from interference sources such as USB 3.0 devices, SSDs, WiFi routers, etc.```
May be time to change your Zigbee channel.
https://www.metageek.com/training/resources/zigbee-wifi-coexistence/
Just a thought.
Oooo hello!
Zigbee channel 20 utilization is 94.48%!
Well that's something I haven't seen before
Check your surrounding wifi channels with a mobile analyzer and either move your wifi or move your zigbee channel (may need re pairing making moving wifi easier)
I’ve forced my Unifi gear to not use a 2.4 channel neighbouring my zigbee stuff. I can’t control my neighbours but I can at least avoid myself.
20 is kind of a bad channel for zigbee as it falls right between 6 and 11 on wifi.
It may be worth shoving it down to zigbee channel 11 or up to zigbee channel 26.
Then making sure your wifi gear uses 6 and 11 for zigbee channel 11. Or wifi uses 1 and 6 for zigbee channel 26.
Just my thoughts as it's worked for me.
I used to do a bunch of wifi stuff back in the day at a previous job and would be looking at channel anaylzers a bunch 😉
Yep! I downloaded an app and moved my Wifi down. I remember doing this ageees ago and channel 20 at the time was the best for me.
Looks like there is some neibours and myself occupying all the channels, but at least now where zigbee is, there's only wifi network competing
Awesome. Good luck. I had some weird issues with door sensors and the vibration sensor for my dryer just missing updates. I had pinned my channels on wifi but forgot I bought another access point and it defaulted to “auto” so Unifi “helpfully” picked wifi channel 1
haha always the way. Thanks for the nudge again on to the scanner, let's see how it goes now
Well it was worth the try, but after moving my wifi to a different channel I woke up to another battery device unavailable 😦
Weird, I was having some drop offs with my leak sensors that are on battery, but it just sort of stopped. I did add some more mains powered items that act as repeaters so 🤷♂️
Regarding Zigbee devices dropping off the network - I had this issue with Z2M for a bunch of hue motion sensors. The only thing that seemed to help was ignoring security and setting my network to always allow join mode and then they would drop and happily hop backon. Haven't had issues in the last 8 months since doing that.
thats not really a good solution
ouch, yeah - agreed @opal tusk security-wise thats a big no-no
Only depends how far into the woods you live 🙂
I agree, but also playing devils advocate here. What is the harm? A neighbour gets a new Philips hue bulb and they keep getting paired with my ZigBee network and not theirs?
They link a button to press things but it can't do anything until its programmed in HA to do something
It might be worth testing... and if you wan to be secure and are using Z2M you can whitelist all the Zigbee ID's of the devices you want to allow to auto-join...
Like i said it fixed all the issues I've had wiht my hue motion sensors. I just don't live close enough to other peoples... zigbee networks... (or even wifi really)
Well it depends, if it can send MQTT queries using Z2M then it could actually open up a garage door if it uses the same topic etc...i think? sure it requirs a bit of internal knowledge but i could see it being used this way
Hmm might be a bit tricky. You'd need to have a device register the exact same device ID to then be able to trigger those automations (assuming an automation had been set to do something like that)
well you never know with devices like flipper zero i can imagine something is possible but then i fall into the same argument when someone asks about my smartlocks and its security "a thief doesnt care about that lock, he only needs a brick, crowbar..."
So I just totally removed my utilization is at 94% issue.
Moved my Skyconnect even further from my network rack.
It wasn't close to USB3 but was sort of close to the network switch.
Further extension cable improved performance some.
I've also moved to Zigbee2MQTT and it is way more stable.
This is great to hear. I am considering starting a second network again, but just haven't got around to it yet. While battery devices still randomly drop off for me, its much less frequent on the SkyConnect than it was on the Conbee
Channel 25 with a sky connect and zigbee2Mqtt is going much better for me presently with battery drop off.
so how many people are now wondering about staying at Jasper's hotel just so they can tell their better-half that it's run with Home Assistant, and isn't it very well done? 😁
Everybody is very welcome, would give you a tour if you like 👌
@blazing prawn What is the AI scheduling tool that was mentioned back a few episodes that you use?
This is the one mate https://reclaim.ai/r/s/XoJcr
Most newer episodes should have them. I think the last couple have missed them. But it does depend on the podcatcher.
Looks like Jasper's and Petters episodes have them there. Will have to see if I can fix them for future episodes
Awesome, thanks. I am trying to offload the scheduling from my brain so I can focus on things that matter.
100%
Just wanted to give a shout out that the new ad format (sticking ads at the front of the show) is so much better than the abrupt cut ins mid episode. I hope that's working out financially. Big thumbs up!
Thanks mate! Appreciate the feedback 🙏
I see "they" are at it again. This time it's Haier. https://github.com/Andre0512/hon
Oh man what an email to receive. Poor developer
Yeah, and if the HA integration only polls as often as the original apps then I don't see how it can be causing any "significant economic harm".
I think a lot of companies like Haier fail to see the bigger picture - if they open their APIs or even just turn a blind eye, they're more likely to sell more units to the likes of ourselves that don't want a gazillion apps on our phones and a wider ecosystem than what they envisage themselves.
I'm also not sure how they see Andre0512's use of their API as an abuse of their IP. Sure, it utilises it, but abuse...?
I guess it all boils down to semantics, but either way I definitely don't envy being on the receiving end of that email Haier sent 😔
Conversely though, I'd love to know what the EFF think of this and the Mazda take-down.
Reading https://www.eff.org/issues/coders/reverse-engineering-faq I think it falls inside fair use, but not-a-lawyer etc etc
Oh yes exactly, if Andre is using the same REST endpoints that their app is, then it gets hard. I guess it comes down to the company wanting to use data from app users to monetize them (ie they are the product)
That's probably it tbh - though if there's no monetization happening in the official apps , then what's the value-add?
tbh I'd love it if Nabu/Paulus and EFF got cosy on all this if even just to try cancel out all these "bully boy tactics" that seem to be used against hobbyist use of large companies' APIs and such.
Naive, I guess
But still...
Good to see Haier potentially backing down now. Still a wait and see
On your last episode (23rd Jan), Phil mentioned a self-adhesive tab for wall mounting tablets - a 3M Tab Pro? Anyone have an Amazon link for it? Thanks!
3M command strips?
Nope, that's why I asked. What he mentioned was 3M Tab Pro, which piqued my curiosity as I'm about to move (temporarily) into a rental house 😢
This is it mate https://www.thepadtab.com/
Just wanted to comment that I've been listening to the podcast lately and really appreciating it. Thanks for producing it!
Thanks mate we appreciate you saying that!
Awesome episode as always guys!
Was just thinking labels could also be used as a reminder of what zigbee router a device was added through, I'm not sure about anyone else but there are times I just can't remember - especially with the likes of aqara devices that can be hinky about being reconnected via the same device each time.
This is a great idea!
What LED Drivers was Kurt on the most recent podcast talking about?
H801, I found it.
Not sure if the latest guest Daniel is on here but I’m very curious.
- What is he using to control his Tesla? I’m piping status into MQTT via teslamate but no control.
- Parts list on the circuit monitoring he setup? I’d love to DIY power monitoring on my panel.
Also I just got solar we should talk 😅
- Also interested
Apologies - been a little tied up!
- I'm not sure if he's on here actually but there's a Tesla HACS integration that I use to control mine!
- we'll reach out and get the answer 🙂
https://github.com/alandtse/tesla - this is the tesla integration
Thanks Rohan.
Oh man, I really want that zigbee2mqtt notification of unavailable devices Florian brought up. Though google is failing me atm, it doesn't appear it was Everything Smart Home though maybe I just check out that watchtower addon instead!
(Granted I don't have that problem but is a nice to have)
Here’s feedback to the questions as I do not use Discord:
I am also using TeslaMate (which in my experience is most reliable / stable, but has undergone some changes in the last year transferring to a new team after the creator did not want to continue developing it) to send data over MQTT to Home Assistant as well as evcc (my charging controller in combination with solar). To control the car I am using this integration: https://github.com/alandtse/tesla - at least for my M3 this still works and they also have an approach to use the fleet API.
Parts list for the DIY power monitor:
• Any ESP32 (so you can spread the power monitor modules over 3 UART buses)
• Peacefair PZEM-004T V3 Energy Monitor https://esphome.io/components/sensor/pzemac.html incl. CT Clamp
• JST XH 4-Pin PigtailI have connected 4 of those monitors in parallel to an UART bus (12 on 3 buses) which works fine without any additional resistors.
Thanks Phil for relaying.
Bruh, why are the inserted ads SO MUCH LOUDER than the rest of the podcast!?
Seriously though. Please fix it. I won't be able to keep listening if it stays like that.
Ugh thanks @hoary beacon
We've got a new editing team trialling with us. This was their first edit, and it clearly hasn't hit the mark which is disappointing. I'll see if I can re-upload this with the correct volume levels set. For now I've turned ads off on that episode
Echo Wall Clock walled garden is real. We’d be devastated to have to lose that clock. But with the way Echo is headed…
100%
I've tried to find a GitHub repo where someone smarter than me has cracked it, but nothing 😦
Yeah. I’m afraid there’s not much demand. Amazon did a pre-order test of an adorable coo-coo-clock version, but it didn’t make their pre-order goal so they didn’t produce it. This makes me think there’s not a large instal base of Echo Wall Clocks.
There are atomic clock movements you can buy that automatically set the time over radio, and the LED ring would be easy enough to DIY with WLED. But it would be a project.
Ever get around to gathering any of those dog-barking sound files? 😂 (From the chat with Kurt back in April)
I'd a security system salesperson drop by yesterday and I, stupidly, blurted out details like "still looking for the right cameras" and "system you put together yourself". I don't think he was anything except legit, but you hear stories, and it might just be a good opportunity to sort something anyway.
So I'm looking, but it could be a while. And in the meantime Speaker-Dog might be able to help maybe?
Lol oh man. Surely they were legit!
The dog bark repo is on my list of things I'll never get time for 😂
Found some royalty-free Labrador sounds and on 100% it's pretty good. I've done 1x full-volume test, but I should probably leave it now for a while. (It's early here now) 😇
I like it!
Newest episode is really quiet as well. :/
But I didn't get any ads on it, so my ears are safe for now.
Spoke too soon. Got a very loud one at the very end.
Really? The vol should have been normalized! Just to confirm it’s 2024.8 that you were listening to?
I had normalised audio when I listened. If I remember correctly, the ad volume was much lower than the podcast itself
“Whenever a kangaroo takes out your mailbox” 😂
and I thought that was just an Aussie turn of phrase
@blazing prawn / @flat ivy the show notes for the newest podcast as rendered in my podcast player seem to be linking to https://hasspodcast.io/ha162 instead of https://hasspodcast.io/ha163/ 😦
Ooops. Thanks mate! Have fixed that. Will take a few hours to update into the players I suspect
I don't remember, but I believe so. It was one of the automatically inserted ones from Acast(?), so I don't think volume normalisation applies to those. Unless Acast are messing it up (accidentally, or deliberately...)
This channel is temporarily closed.
I am updating this server’s organization right now and making channels Read Only during this process. It will reopen once the server changes are complete.
🙏 Appreciate your understanding and patience!
Oh, right!
This channel was formerly the podcast channel. I’ve repurposed it to be a chat where all of our <@&966474857808298074> can share their content, and y’all can discuss it. Or just chat with the creators!
-# I forgot to write something for this channel opening.
I have renamed this channel from content-vault to creators-vault based on the conversation here: #1285154411114532935 message
I am watching to see how activity levels are in this channel, #1284960456880029707, and #3d-printing because they could overlap a bit. Things may change in the future due to that, but I will be sure to give people a heads up.
im making a personal shopper plugin (it adds items to your shopping list/ it also learns your personal items )
it has a list of items that can help you fill out your shopping list, its still very work in progress.
updating to frequently to post the repo link but message if you are interested in testing.
I'm a bit unsure of the channel rename, especially for anyone coming to the Home Assistant discord server to chat about the Home Assistant Podcast that @blazing prawn and @flat ivy present, as folks are going to expect a #podcast channel - there's a very firm cognitive link there, and you've now pulled the rug under anyone looking for the usual #podcast chat area.
Naming it the-creators-vault makes me think that it's creator specific - so will in all liklihood have people thinking that it's creator only.
I don't mean to be divisive but don't all HA creators have their own community chat forums set up?
I figured this also includes people who write blog posts or other things too, I don't have a discord server for my tiny blog
We have many more creators in our Creator Network than just the Podcast group, and they only have a private chat to talk amongst themselves and employees. This space is now for all creators to share their content (even those who aren’t in the program) and allow the community to engage with them. I’m investigating a bot to help post content automatically for people in our Creator Network to make this easier on them.
And even if you did, if not everything you post is about HA then this is a great place to share those posts!
Lol my blog originally had nothing to do with home assistant, though now it's mostly home assistant 😁
This is the way
How do I request an additional channel? I’d like to add one for the ocpp integration that I am maintaining
There will be no additional channel, especially not for a single integration. You may use a thread in #1284966582375813201
Looks good, how do I test?
Need a tip: how to dynamically show all entities of a certain type, if in a certain room? I'm trying to make a card that has all Scenes in my Office. If I add or delete a Scene, I'm hoping the card will dynamically update. Multiple other uses like "All lights in the Kitchen", etc. (Apologies if this isn't the right channel)
You’ll want to head to #1284980040940912641 for help. 😊
From the latest podcast: 2024.20 - aren’t all automations, whether originally created in YAML or in the GUI, viewable and editable in the GUI?
Does that not hold true for automations not defined in the default automations.yaml file?
All viewable. Only the ones on automation.yaml editable
(And a migration path as a banner on the automation editor offered 😉)
Why are you crossposting here?
u're right
I thought it referred to devs.
has anyone tried a switchbot to turn a computer on?
or alternatively has onyone ever built a switchbot alike device?
Can you not just wake on lan?
It's easier to use something like the esp PC control project to control the front panel power button electronically
I understand what you mean. I thought the best way to communicate is to have clarity in meaning and naming things. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to be universal.
I'd appreciate feedback to be dropped in #1285154411114532935. If you could help me with the description that would make it more clear on what this place is for, it would also be appreciated. The description is currently:
Chat with our Creator Network members (https://partner.home-assistant.io/creators/) or share your favorite Home Assistant content you find across media.
If you're a content creator making stuff about Home Assistant, we encourage you to apply to be a part of our Creator Network!
I don't see how to make that more clear here, so a different perspective could help.
on some motherboards WoL only boots from Hibernate, not from Shutdown
so it may be that they want the pc completely off
although it does use very little power in Hibernate
Be curious which draws more power, the switchbot + maybe smart plug to tell the pc state, or hibernate

need more home assistant black friday deal [videos] 😄
Has this channel ever been used for any legit reason?
Yes. In September, if I remember correctly.
Is it true that a person like smarthomejunkie can post his youtube videos here?
Yes!
What I would really like to do with this space is have the bot auto-post the content made by those in our Creator Network.
That way the overhead for the creators is lessened.
Is there any progress done for that? I think the youtube home assistant integration can be used for that
No, but if anyone wants to step up to help me get it done faster it would be appreciated. The bot stuff gets pushed back often for more time sensitive things.
@wild glade Yooooooo I used this video yesterday to sort out my stupid Tuya problems. Still useful, thank you!! 🙏 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apWfjargTpA
Everyone knows about local Tuya, but I'm betting on Tuya Local for more device support in future.
We will look at this new integration, how to get device id and local key for it, but also how to get data point id's (dp id) needed for unsupported devices to be added and how you can create support for your Tuya device.
GitHub URL: https://github....
Oh, thanks! Exactly because of the mentioned issues, I’ve banished all my WiFi-based Tuya devices. Maybe I always got unlucky with them, but none of them worked well. The Zigbee ones could stay, but even those are slowly being replaced. But my dad still has some, so I’ll apply it there 🙂
I spent all of my waking hours yesterday trying to solve this problem. That video plus this Reddit post helped me out immensely.
I didn't need to worry about custom scenes, but that info helped me identify what was happening in the Tuya Developer platform.
AWESOME!!!! Glad it worked out for you!
should i delete my querry and move it? or just post new on there
Deleting and posting in the right channel would be good.
Thinking of changing this channel name to #creator-connection. Seems like it’d be more descriptive of its intention.
We also have a working prototype of a bot that will post content from our Creators’ YouTube channels. That will help pull in content for discussion.
My HAOS system is booting but the HomeAssistant environment is not getting started. Seems it is stuck somewhere. Other addons are booted. When i try a core stop from the CLI it is tellign a job is still running
also i cant restore a backup or create one, how can i recover from this?

@lapis inlet excellent job hosting the podcast. I was FLOORED when you nailed the outro

Also, Paulus was on Corey Quinn’s podcast! https://www.lastweekinaws.com/podcast/screaming-in-the-cloud/creating-the-foundation-for-a-new-home-assistant-with-paulus-schoutsen/

If anyone has time for good advices, I've proposed a package of scripts and automation for heating time optimization here (https://community.home-assistant.io/t/smarthrt-smart-heating-recovery-time-cool-sleep-warm-wake-up/833025) and what do you think about package for this? Is it worth to try something like a blueprint or another way to pack this thing?
Home Assistant Community
Hi 🤙 ! Here is a full pack of script that works quite well for several weeks for me, and that could be called Cool Sleep, Warm Wake-Up! Anyway, most of the project description, and all source is on github (only missing is the documentation for equations and the advanced mode): The thermal mass of my radiators and walls provides good thermal ...

hey, anyone know a good microscope for soldering and microsoldering under 500?
I was looking at this but i'm not sure how good it is: https://amscope.com/products/c-sm-3t
AmScope
The SM-3T is a heavy-duty, highly-flexible microscope designed for biological and industrial applications. This model is especially popular in the QC, repair and engraving industries thanks to its ease-of-use and reliability. With its wide zoom range and single-arm boom-stand, this model will become an indispensable in
I just need one that I can use, attach to some device like a monitor laptop, and that will have a big enough stand/area to solder things as big as a laptop motherboard
im very happy with it
Though in future these chats should be in #the-workshop 😉
what do you need help with?
Finding the right channel i guess
I bought an openbox trinocular SM-4T Amscope and it has completely changed the game. It makes soldering pure joy. You'll want a ring light and perhaps some wider angle objective lenses. I also picked up a clear "filter" to protect the lens which has given me peace of mind. I would strongly consider getting one with an articulating arm if you are going to be doing repairs or modifications in place, as it can be a pain to try and get the height right so that your target is within the focal plain.
I would love that, but it’s 600-1k here
If I can find one for 400 then I’ll get it though

It is what keeps me 🆙
I have my doubts about these making it legal in the US, they are cool though
i am curious what safety there is to ensure that the plug pins are not live when unplugged. whats the reaction time for it to work out its been unplugged and stop sending power
I love it!
reaction time and stop sending power?
if its feeding power out and you unplug it then it needs to detect that its been unplugged and shut off otherwise the pins of the now unplugged plug will be live and touchable therefore highly dangerous
well that would only matter if it's using a male plug to deliver power and they call those suicide cords for a reason
so.. wait.. this thing can backfeed power into your house with the same plug it uses to charge itself?
yes
so, this thing wants to kill linemen?
maybe the electrical grid works different in some of those weird countries, but yeah, that would cause serious issues here in the US and canada
i assume it does not work if there is no power. its designed for peak shaving and overnight standby. not as a ups
the invertor would have to sync to the grid frequency and i guess if that sync cant happen no output happens. my question is how quickly does it detect its no longer synced because there is nothing to sync to and shut off
i imagine its pretty quick but is it quick enough that you cant "yank and zap" as it were
considering how little power it will put out compared to what utilities generate, the inverter will sync up with grid frequency pretty quick (providing it has feedback control, and if it doesn't, its not safe to use in any country)
yeah it will definetly sync pretty quick. just wont want to get a ~3.5A (800w@230v) shock off the thing if you slip when unplugging it
That's the issue I have with it being legal in the US. We have big back feed transfer switches to prevent shocking a lineworker.
yeah i suspect it would detect and shut down long before any linemen would be working on the line. i imagine its max 2 seconds but 2 seconds is enough to unplug and zap
it wont start outputting power if stuff the mains is already off
it wont work in what some people describe as "island mode" that would be too dangerous for all the reasons discusssed
Detecting a lineworker miles away? I have my doubts.
no i mean once it detects the mains power has gone down it switches off
i just wonder how quickly this happens
That makes more sense but that brings into question what is the point of it vs any of the other battery solutions that can be used for both situtations? I have an battery generator between my wall and my server rack. Power goes down, it powers the rack, power comes back it charges itself with the benefit that I can attach solar
yeah this is not designed for that. its designed for peak shaving and storing excess solar for use at night. its not a backup
the main attraction is that it can just be plugged in and start saving you money (in theory)
It still resembles a suicide cable and likely not going to be legal in the US. Govee got nuked here for being able to turn on the heater remotely remember..
yeah without knowing exactly how it works its hard to tell any further. i was thinking about it for the UK. it would really depend on how it worked.
i know mostly how US power works but not nessasarily the regulations surrounding it.
and yeah it does resember suicide cable. but if it detects its been unplugged or power failure within 100ms or less then its probably fine
Power failure is easy to detect on those scales.
Unplugging should be fine provided only the tips of the plugs are uninsulated - that gives you a decent amount of length between disconnecting and exposing bare metal
You are then reliant on software safety though, there's not really a nice way to have an inherently safe way of doing that
you could also have a microswitch on the plug that would respond even before it loses electrical connection
Legally I think you'd run into issues there. There are a ton of standards around plugs and I doubt many would allow an extra switch to be installed
yeah i was thinking about a custom plug but as stated i think standards would be the issue with that approach. i am sure its pretty dam quick to shut off but still curious what the top end of the range would be

Hi,
I've applied to Partner Network via Google Forms on your site, but didn't get any response or confirmation on my mailbox. Is there any estimated time for responding? Or if the application will be rejected would there be any feedback?
Hi! The process for onboarding new creators is...well, to be blunt, a mess. That's my own making, I haven't been able to prioritize reviewing applications on a regular basis and build up a better flow for this group. 🙈
There are a lot of people in the pipeline waiting to hear back from me. I will make sure to communicate with those who do not get accepted, though - nothing worse than being left to hang with these. Unfortunately, I don't have a good answer for ETA, but know that a single submission is good enough - I keep a log of them. 🙂
@blazing prawn / @flat ivy something for your Fails section of the next podcast, Hive are at it again. This time changing their api to require a user-agent string for making changes to entities for controlling heating and such. 🙄 So currently there's a bunch of us unable to adjust the central heating through Home Assistant.
Thankfully the maintainer of the integration jumped right on it, but jeez-louise!
update the maintainers of that integration are awesome and have released a fixed version already 😍
I'm curious, did they require a specific user agent string, or just one to be sent at all?
I've seen some security stuff block requests which don't have one at all, which is at least slightly more reasonable than Hive requiring it be set to a specific value
I'm not entirely sure as prior to adding "Hive/12.04.0 iOS/18.3.1 Apple" as a User-Agent header, one wasn't set at all.
The person that added this just took it from the iOS app - said as much in https://github.com/home-assistant/core/issues/138524#issuecomment-2660233879
not sure if this is the right place to ask BUT - I have a wand from Wizarding World at Universal Studios and I want to use it at home to do things like turn on the lights. and turn them off. Is this viable at all? what would I need to do this?
from the linked article here it looks like that all there is to that wand is a ir-reflective tip?
so basically what you need is a camera setup and OpenCV to replicate the stuff done here. It should be easy to convert anything windows or kinect to linux and any ir camera with ir light source.

You made me want this
Thanks this is a 1.5, but I'm working on a 2.1 touchscreen rotary as well. This device is great and works well with esphome
I have to admit, I cringed at the Harry Potter theme stuff I've seen on here. I'm queer, and know the harm of promoting it.
Terf wizards (or, you know, just bad writing)
Any change your opening a webshop? Or trade with my voip skills
I should have ordered more in bulk , I've been running into road blocks with the 2.1 TFT screen as the driver HAS has for the chipset doesnt work with it, the 1.5 is working great, that 2.1 is the future, compact touch with rotary, once I get it to work with HAS I'm certain enthusiasts would love it.
Thanks for the conditional lovelace without all the added yaml tweaking. It's sparked a few inquiries
That is a MASSIVE screen!
I setup a raspberry pi on 43 inch touchscreen and running voice commands on a 100 inch 4k tv, using the conditions with voice comtrol create a transition between floors to show the potential of HAS.
That's amazing. Which screen are you using?

what's the best way to store the state of devices so I can restore them later? for example, I want to create an automation that turns everything off when I leave the house and then turns back on only the devices that were previously on when I return. what’s the most efficient way to achieve this?
I'm aware I can create an input_boolean for each device and save it's state once the turn-off automation triggers, but I was looking for a more elegant and generic way

It's a standard 4k tv, it's a 10 point USB frame that you put on any TV which tracking finger movement to give you a simulated touchscreen. I've seen frames as small as 20 inches but as big as 85! I ordered 2 from Ali Express where the pricing was more competitive. Would be cool to have a 100 touchscreen! Lol

Honestly, dashboard layouts are quite subjective. Something I like may not be something you like. Something that is good for my home may not be good for yours. The problem with allowing such customization, however, is that the learning curve for it is usually going to be a lot steeper than the simple one-size-fits-all crap put out by the big names.

Hello, Yesterday I connected a new router, all devices work correctly except the LEDnet WiFi controller. I try to add a device in the MagicHome application, unfortunately it does not detect the controller.
When I switch to the old router everything works correctly.
When I turn on the new router again, the device is not detected.
Maybe there is a way for the controller to forget the old router and it can be connected to the new router.
The new router supports the 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi bands - in line with the requirements of the LEDnet controller.
I would be grateful for your help.

What’s the timeline for creator network applications to be reviewed?
Application review is...uh...nonexistent right now. 🫣
BUT I have everyone who has historically applied and now that Community Day has pushed through I can start focusing on the Creator Network better. 🙂
First thing we are doing is revamping the Creator Network website and adjusting the application. But everyone who has applied before are still on the list to be reviewed and I will make sure to respond to everyone whether they made the cut or not.
Not sure where to post this, But I've been waiting 6 months for Home Assistant merchandise to be delivered

I see twitch streamers where they let their audiences change colors on lights and other things in their backgrounds. I've seen lumiastream is a popular option for that, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to allow twitch viewers to be able to change light colors directly with home assistant? Hi there 🤓 I'm not a creator but I'm a humble QA tester, would love to be of any help here. I use HA for my own house, on a very simple level, and I would be very happy to contribute at some point while learning - and using - new things. Ping me if you would like to connect !
There is no QA in home assistant. Only developers and (beta) users.
In a way everyone is a QA tester of their instance
I mean if there was QA then the QA in there own instance could make automated tests. That run every update and timed period. And optionally create issues on git. And you could do a check for those bugs before running a upgrade.
I love test automation
Everyone is a tester - only for me, it is intended aha ^^
Yes in my daily job I do a lot of automation, using Cypress among others.
Was simply an offer, I would find it very exciting to open the door of testing Home Assistant because I love using it.
Be sure to drop in the developers channel

Hey Everyone,
I'd like to ask for guidance if i may.
Using HASSIO w vscode server esphome addon for a year now.
I prefer launching my fws via ota from vscode.
recently i came across a few cases where if specific config options are used vscode fails to compile where the esphome method always builds.
was trying to read into the threads/rooms but i'm lost where to start or ask...
May i have a direction please or sort with this pickle please?
Thanks in advance.
thank you

Dang, i know it's just the ad network jamming garbage into the podcast but hearing an ad for ice and border patrole on the HA podcast is so out of place
The new image generation updates are a bit of a solution looking for a problem, so I present this scenario.
User is dyslexic and audio output is not possible.. eg. Magic Mirror etc.
HA download rss news feeds and image generation summarises these to visual information
Seems to be a good way of extending accessibility.
Gemini is struggling with the text generation.
Seems an ideal candidate for a blueprint.
Why I'm not streaming anymore (and what I'm doing instead)

My live streams aren't coming back, at least not anytime soon. But what's coming instead might actually be better.

Wise decision.
Your loved ones and your health are what matters most.
I respect the hell out of any person willing to step back from engagement metrics and making the sober decision that being the object of parasocial relationships, toxic live chat bullshit and the cognitive overload of "being watched" is not a worthy goal. I wish more people would look at their priorities like this.
Where can I contact an admin? I fell for a social engineering scam. I would like to let them know that if someone impersonates me on this server. They should be banned from the server. They were trying to conduct fraudulent behavior on freelance websites. I didn't do anything stupid. But he did get to know me.
Spot on video. Live stream sucks, what we want is to learn and find out about curious things. People can learn more how to do stuff in 5 min video than on a live stream and a manual or a documentation page sometimes.
Cause it's easier edit: and convenient.
Well... not really in the channel for the media content creators. But I forwarded your messsage to the other mods/admins.
Thank you. I s am sorry I did not know where to put the message. I'm trying to broadcast this to every server I am a part of. Just to keep an eye out for people trying to impersonate me or trying to DM and scam other people. I have his user id and screenshots. But that doesn't have to be substantial proof. I will contact discord about it too.

Hey everyone, I'm thinking of building a small AI desktop robot that can integrate with Home Assistant. Has anyone done something similar? 🤓
you probably want #the-workshop for that instead of here. this is for the content creator network.
Alright, sorry about that.
🚨 Spicy take incoming 🚨
Just dropped a video about why Home Assistant's "add-ons" terminology has been quietly confusing thousands of new users and why we should change it to "apps"
Yes, I know how that sounds. "It's just bike-shedding!" you're thinking.
But hear me out; When new users see Add-ons and Integrations, both sound like extensions. The names don't explain the actual difference. So people install the wrong thing, get confused, and waste time.
The fix? Use words everyone already knows. Apps.
Made a quick video on a plane explaining the full reasoning:
I opened an architecture proposal to rename Home Assistant "add-ons" to "apps"; and it's sparked quite the discussion. In this vlog, I explain why this seemingly small change actually matters for newcomers, why "add-ons" creates confusion, and what's happening in the community debate.
What do you think? Apps, add-ons, or something else? Let me ...
I don't think it's bike-shedding - I think it makes a lot of sense and is really important. I always felt like the name add-ons:
- Is not distinct enough from integrations, and new users frequently confuse them.
- Sounds a bit too "innocent", making users too comfortable with installing them (not saying users should avoid add-ons, just that they should practice more care and scrutiny).
"Apps" sounds like a step in the right direction.
Had to look up what bike-shedding means lol
But yeah I agree with the transition to apps
it’s slightly more descriptive, and uses a term that has broader recognition. Good change.
I keep calling them "plugins" by mistake., which seems to go to the problem with this name.
Well I started an answer but since it got lenghty I replied in GitHub.
I can't sleep.
It's not stress, exactly. It's not anxiety. It's just... my brain won't shut up about the new place.

I really think this channel needs to be renamed - most of the messages here are people posting in the wrong channel
I can give you a tiny sliver of experience with wall tablets. I very quickly gave up trying to run the actual Home Assistant app on my 2012 potato slab, and instead hacked up a websocket / REST-combo that does this:
- shows a bunch of scene buttons
- sends REST calls to activate scenes
- subscribes to a custom sensor that tracks the most recently activated scene
I think the big lesson learned was this: The dumber you make it, the more you'll use it. This thing toggles scenes, and that's all it does. it has big, beefy buttons that are easy to reach, newcomers don't get intimidated, and my brain will choose this panel as the easiest way to turn down the lights at movie night. If I needed a thermostat control panel, I'd buy another €20 Nexus pad and put that where it made the most sense.
-# As a comparison, I always marvel at how uninviting and hostile the Tesla scratchy-slab UI is. As a passenger, it has you utterly convinced you'll accidentally distract the driver, fuck up the satnav, or initiate the self-destruct countdown. Eugh.
it’s funny i just built the start of my v2 dashboard for a wall tablet this weekend and it is really struggling to run
i am very tempted to just write a vue + tailwind app because half of my components are already tailwindcss templates lolll
I'm wondering it there are content creators that also install/service/manage people's HA system as a business? Is this a job that I can "create" locally? I assume most people would like an individual person/company to call locally (versus a ticket to a remote central location somewhere) to do upkeep and upgrades on their HA systems if they can't do it themselves. Is there a market for this?
There might be, but the question is do you really want to manage other people's HA instances lol
I'm not sure yet. I'm finding that I can no longer deny my enjoyment over solving and learning about home security tools and automations. This is causing me to have to drink knowledge from a firehouse and I'm learning all the physical hardware for the networks that usually run along with it (even though HA uses a lot of non-wifi protocols). Most people seem to need both for their goals.
Anyway, I'd love to take a shot at being able to someday make money doing this kind of work.
I'm curious what options exist now and I assume home automation and security will only propagate further as the components get cheaper. The knowledge may still be unique enough that I can get paid to setup and install as that occurs?
it is a thing but its not very common. there was a HA podcast episode on it earlier this year HERE
We’re kicking off our new Vendor series of episodes, and first up are Connor and Tez who are making a business of installing Home Assistant for their customers with @LuxeiaLtd
00:00:00 Introduction
00:01:05 Background and Challenges
00:02:02 Finding Home Assistant
00:03:53 Development and Expansion
00:13:47 Client Onboarding and Integration
...
the issue is one of ongoing support rather than the actual setup of stuff.
hardware selection is a big thing. say you buy something that integrates perfectly now but after a couple of weeks that company decides to push a firmware update and break the integration permanently. you then have to try to explain this entire situation to people and all they understand is that you sold them something which doesn't work.
I got a media pass to CES 2026. I heard Home Assistant is having a community meetup on Jan 6th. Any details on where I can register?

Hi everyone 👋
I’m new to Home Assistant development, and I recently created a new integration for Lytiva. I have already submitted all 3 required pull requests:
but in this document pr why so many participants and why other repo/pr's commit in my commits section??
i don't understand this things!
can anyone explain me?
You are in the wrong channel. This one is for contact to the media content creators of the HA network.
Self-assign the Developer role in id:customize and you will get access to the dev channels. Those people likely can help.
When you say the creators in the HA network do you mean the foundation or content creators in that make content related to HA?
I have a channel in the cruising community but have not touched it in a couple years and thinking about doing videos about smart homes.
Content creators making content related to HA, who are members of the HA Creators Network.
i created a python script to connect to renogy inverter over bt and output to mqqt
can i send it over to some integration somewhere so they make that code their own? /use it as a template to make their own thing
That would be something for #1284960456880029707

Ohohoh I've already seen that you've applied in the past, iirc.
I'm catching up on applications currently, and I'll start sending acceptance and rejection emails this month.
I still have a lot to go through, though.
Thanks Missy, no worries I know you are crazy busy 🙂
You are dedicated, working on the weeked 🙂
As more people are hired on at the foundation, more time is opened for my focuses to shift where they need to be.
That is great news
Oh no, I'm not doing it RIGHT NOW right now. It's just my current focus at work a couple days a week. 😆
No problem I am here for the long hall 🙂
We have to start to be careful. Server mom is looking.
Yeh hehe Jorg
Long story short, I am doing exactly this. I install, integrate, setup, connect and support Home Assistant in Slovakia. Market is not yet there so as a creator I need to educate and propagate Home Assistant to the not tech people around us.
Hey folks! I built DashVoice - a Fully Kiosk alternative with on-device wake word detection and speech recognition.
Say "Hey Jarvis, turn on the lights" and it just works. No cloud, no subscriptions. Wake word (openWakeWord) and ASR (sherpa-onnx) run entirely on the tablet.
Looking for beta testers before Play Store launch.
Demo: https://youtu.be/f7RMHgUMX_c
Beta signup: https://play.google.com/apps/internaltest/4701643667208827287
DashVoice turns any Android tablet into a voice-controlled smart home hub. No cloud. No subscriptions. 100% local.
"Hey Jarvis, turn on the kitchen lights" → lights turn on → "Turned on the light"
• Wake word: on-device (openWakeWord)
• Speech recognition: on-device (sherpa-onnx)
• Intent processing: Home Assistant Conversation A...
It does the FK stuff you'd expect (HA dashboard, screensaver, MQTT, REST API) but adds on-device voice:
• Wake words: "Hey Jarvis", "Okay Nabu", etc (openWakeWord)
• Speech recognition: runs locally on tablet (sherpa-onnx)
• Commands go to HA Conversation API
• TTS via Piper or Other OpenAI Endpoint like Kokoro
Please use the channel #1284960456880029707 for this. It is unrelated to the HA creator network program.
understood - I was hoping to give content creators something to play with.

Hi, anyone interested in testing out the new build of ESPHome Desinger v.0.9 ? would love some feedback https://github.com/koosoli/ESPHomeDesigner/tree/testing
Can it import an existing configuration? Couldn't see that mentioned
I have 0 knowledge of the code but I doubt it. I worked with/tested modeling based software building. And its one way only.
The classic question: can it run DOOM? Turns out, Home Assistant can.
I built a custom integration that runs the original DOOM (1993) inside a Home Assistant smart home dashboard. It's the real game, running locally.
The integration also tracks gameplay with sensors, has daily DOOM trivia, and includes a hidden iddqd easter egg.

Hey! I hope I'm in the right place to ask this but I'm just starting out on making my own voice operated ai. I've been trying to make a custom voice using Google Collab Piper. I've been at it for a little over a month. I've tried a few other collabs with no avail either. I've also tried Kaggle too. Admittedly part of the problem is I know little to nothing about coding. I have 722 wav files and a metadata.csv. Is there anyone out there who would either be willing to help me make an onnx file or walk me through it? Either would be hugely appreciated!

I have raccoons that absolutely destroy my lawn (first world problems, I know) but I really would like if they would stop so I built a blueprint. I call it the raccoon sniper.
It uses my reolink camera's animal entity to detect an animal on my lawn, then it sends a 3 frame snapshot to a local LLM to determine if the animal is a raccoon. If it's then it returns a NOT_Raccoon token and the automation ends.
If the Ai returns a token of RACCOON then the automation activates my bhyve smart water valves attached to my sprinkler and pelts the raccoon off my lawn.
My next task is to also make it store and log how many times RACCOON was returned and include a screen capture so I can make a kill board. 😂
I just had to share it with someone because I thought it was cool

I've got the two images at the top to navigate either into the house or to the other side of the property but Im just not sure design wise on an alternative that isn't a regular grid or button card
So you're basically turning yourself into a Sim
FWIW that is a nice looking interface but I'm all about business, I want as much accessible at once

Were creator network applications ever opened back up? I had applied a while ago and was told at the time applications were frozen while the HA creator program was restructured.
Applications are being reviewed by the community manager. If you already have applied, you will get an answer eventually if you are accepted or not.
Ok. Was just curious since it’s been about a year at this point.
I only just started reviewing applications on a biweekly cadence in January, and started inviting new members in February before State of the Open Home took over our lives. I expect most people should hear back over the next several weeks. 🙂

Because they can?
I totally get that it's a bit 'intense' for some! I'm just having a lot of fun exploring the limits of CSS animations and seeing how far I can push the visual depth in Home Assistant. It’s a personal creative project for my own dashboard.
I also understand that the criticism is partially valid—I know not everyone can handle this much flickering and high-energy motion, and I sincerely apologize if it caused any discomfort.
That being said, I am quite proud of the fact that I built the entire 'Zenit' system from the ground up myself. I’m not relying on external card-mods; I wrote the custom card logic and CSS with my own hands, and I’m still actively developing it. I’ve already integrated features like 3D floating depth, radar scanning, glitch effects, and even localized voice-reporting telemetries to make the dashboard feel like a living, breathing entity. It’s a constant work in progress, and I love the challenge of making it all work together!
Looking into the Creator Network program and I notice there aren't too many people in it... I would have thought there would be heaps! Is this because there aren't many applications or because they aren't eligible? 🤔
Is there an expected amount of subscribers/engagement to have before applying?
I am but a single person managing the group - there's around 35 members in it now and as I continue to grow it it's becoming more difficult to easily manage. I'm working on a few different ways to help reduce that - finding a CRM to keep tabs on people, adjusting our meeting times, working on a Creator Network newsletter to get them information outside of our regularly scheduled meetings. The group needs a lot more love, and hopefully with the expansion of the Community department I will have someone to offload some of the lesser things to so I can focus harder on the broader community changes.
There absolutely is not - but if you ask some others at the foundation they feel there is.
I look at languages the content is made in (to help branch into different communities), content quality, relevancy to the projects at the foundation, and how it's presented. If someone has 500 subscribers on YouTube but have really well done content, I move those people into a consideration box. If someone has 500 subscribers and I see that the views are higher than subscribers, that indicates to me that they understand how to use SEO/the platform's algorithm to their advantage (which gets better the more one gets subscribers).
But here is the important bit: I don't just want video content creators. Written content is just as important (the HACF does this, for example). How am I going to judge engagement based on text content if I don't have the ability to see the analytics? I can't. So I do not rely solely on those numbers because most times they are simply vanity numbers.
That makes a lot of sense, thank you! The thing about making written content, is how do you get it out there? With video content, platforms are designed to push your content, to show it to people. With a website/blog, I've found its significantly harder to get views, let alone a community.
I do prefer writing to making videos, so maybe I can look into that, especially if it's something you're wanting to see more of
One of my goals with that is actually amplifying the Network's content better.
We're working on building community newsletters that should help with this. But maybe it's something we can do on the Creator Network website, too.
I'd have to check with our web devs to see how that can work, but I'm assuming it's as simple as an RSS that displays the content, kinda like when you add in a social channel's posts.
Sounds about right. Sometimes displaying Instagram/YouTube needs a little more work (speaking from experience), but most blogs will have a feed like that.
-# I'm also looking for more diversity in gender but that's a different topic
Out of curiosity, is it mostly males in the network? I know there's the Wife Approval Factor on the home assistant subreddit which says to me that it's mostly males over there.
I swear I am going to write the Automod to respond to those to correct them to Home Approval Factor. 😂
Yes, it is mostly men, we have two women in the Creator Network out of all of them.
Woah. Well, if I ever apply you'll be glad to know I'm female 😂
I mean, I would love to be a part of the program... If I could work on creating a blog purposefully for that it's pretty cool to be able to check in with you and such. What better way to succeed than to work with the one who makes the decisions? Not meaning to pressure, just explaining where my brain is going
You know what to do now, right? @undone arrow
Me? Or Missy
Totally agree with you, @undone arrow . On my channel, I mainly show the process and tell the story behind the project, but if someone wants to replicate what I did, I publish all the related details on my blog with more in-depth information — almost like a step-by-step guide — including the YAML for scripts and automations. My goal is to help others not feel intimidated by these kinds of projects, and to show that they can do it too.

Ep 4 Scheduling Link: https://doodle.com/poll/5ywckktu54zi2di4

Hello there... this seems cool!
agreed! I like the UI a lot!
Hey from the UK guys, love the podcast. Enjoyed the latest ep! If there’s an help with I’ll happily pitch in 😃
Thanks @prisma badge! For sure - is there anything specifically you'd like to talk about? I don't think Dan, who arranges the podcast, is on Discord yet, but we can figure something out! We typically have scheduling and show notes. We use the show notes to plan what to talk about, and the scheduling link to figure out whos available when. Especially if there's something cool or different you're doing with it, that would be great to hear!
I have a small inkling of hope that the switch to Discord will make it into the next episode 😊
Oh man, I just read my message back... I need to stop using devices after midnight! Sorry, I can type, honest! Cool I’ll keep and eye on what you guys are up to on here for a bit and if there’s anything I can add, I’ll be sure to drop it in 😃
hah, one would hope so! @willow fossil
anytime!
I enjoyed the notion of the WAF (wife acceptance factor) on the podcast, as this massively impacts my decision on an already fairly limited set of kit available here in the UK
haha yep! we're calling it PAF (partner) now to be more gender friendly! But yes, I like to think that it helps build a more usable design 😃
I did notice someone on Gitter mention that yea, far more 2017! Like it 😃
hey @willow fossil any chance that I can be a mod for this channel? It'll help to sticky messages/URL's etc
@prisma badge agreed completely!
@flat ivy Let me see what I can do.
PS @prisma badge I just thought of this - if you have any questions to Paulus or the dev team, we're going to have him back on in a future episode, so feel free to pop it in here and tag myself, Dan (when he joins Discord), or Phil (when he joins Discord too...)
thanks @willow fossil
worked!

Oh that sounds cool, thanks @flat ivy
yep! just did that - thanks @willow fossil
@flat ivy Please let me know when Dan and Phil join Discord and I'll give them chan privs also.
Will do! Thanks bud!
@blazing prawn you know it!

I just added a blog post about podcast episode 3. Feel free to submit those in the future. Right now I have kept them very easy. The podcast will need a better logo btw, posts will show better on Twitter/Facebook with a preview image that is at least 600x315
Thanks @steep field
PAF is so much more friendly to the wifes actually in here. Thank you for that.
I was waiting for you guys to ask balloob about "dark theme" :D, this should really be an option, for night time it is unsuitable to have such a bright UI 😃
agreed, @long herald
@sweet star You mean for the HASS UI? That sounds like a great point we can bring up!
Tweet for Episode 3 just went up
yes for the HASS UI 😃
dark theme has been a consistent request: https://community.home-assistant.io/t/dark-theme-or-night-mode-theme/446
But it has also been continually denied. just FYI!
@dreamy quiver Is this something that could easily be achieved with a custom-ui type of integration?
i think it would be pretty simple to implement with a custom .css file
@blazing prawn @flat ivy If you guys are interested, I would love to offer up a little bit of my time to be on an episode 😛
@sly widget I've actually considered looking into frontend: to see if there was a way I could add a path to custom .css, .js, etc files.
that would be pretty sweet
Might be good to do a survey among the listeners to get a feel of how technical the audience is. I think the audience appreciates some technical info like in episode 3.
Yea I liked that episode. I thought the pi stat was really interesting too
Hello
bugger, stupid doctor Things to do. Definitely interested in the podcast, message me and we should definitely do something. 😃
In fact, this stupid medical stuff is going to take longer than I thought. @flat ivy You should email me at: hass@robotsandcake.org to discuss this, as I have no idea how long this medical thing will take. Look forward to hearing from you, and thanks for the very gracious invite!
I like the techie and diy stuff more vs talking about some expensive ready made hardware for example. Ideas for episodes, highlight the special things like hadashboard, appdeamon, zanzito, find server, then special use cases like sprinkler system, circadian lighting. Etc.
Not sure if it's just me, but I cannot get ep3 to play. 😦
Of course, as soon as I say that it loads. I had to go directly to the mp3 URL: https://hasspodcast.io/podcast-download/23/ha003.mp3
@willow fossil would be great to have you on a first episode! Maybe episode 5? Would be good to have some stats around the move to discord and any teething issues, and also any other community related stuff you want to mention.
That would be perfect.
@willow fossil I second @blazing prawn Ep 5 would be great!
dale3h is away: pool league!
@willow fossil had to rely on the mp3 directly too.
dale3h is away: pool league!
@gusty cape what are you using for your podcasts? I just tried with the Apple podcast app and it worked
I've been using Overcast but only cause it was the first app I liked out of 4 or 5.
Let me know how it compares to any you know of.
I'm not dedicated to it but it is fairly nice
haha yeah - its interesting, I never even thought to look at others =\
going to test it to see if maybe a certain feed has something weird going on
weird; just tried it from the feed on Overcast too; seemed to work ok
also, I kinda like the UI on this 😃 might switch to it too! thanks for the reco @gusty cape
Def!!
Is that an iOS only app?
looks like
Damn. You guys get the best Podcast experience native, and now have good apps as well
Pocket casts and Player Fm on android are good too
Thanks @sweet star I'll have to try those out!
one is paid but highly acclaimed and the other one is free yet good enough for me (it even rhymes 😄 )
Per @sweet star s earlier comment - I'd be happy to be part of a podcast talking about AppDaemon/HADashboard at some point
@blazing prawn are there any plans to expand Hasspodcast.io to include links and show notes? To help push the conversation once it's over. (direct people to links for Discord and repos of things we talk about?)
@hybrid shell that would be great!
@sullen laurel that was the original intention I think, but Dan who maintains the site and uploads the episodes hasn't got that far yet
Seconded. We're keeping it on the doc (pinned) for now but I guess will move when we're able
@blazing prawn - cool! Hit me up here or on the forum whenever you are ready, no rush, I'll be around.
Where is Dan? He's MIA
anyone knows where I have to put the polymer file for a component that lives in custom_components?
ups wrong channel
Hello. Sorry I totally missed the move to Discord
Hey dude!
Life has been a bit hectic in the last few weeks
No worries! Hope everything is ok
Welcome!
Has Carlo made it across? It seems we have missed the only two times he was available
Yeah @sullen laurel is on here
ccostan is away: Headin out to ⚽ with the kiddos. Be sure to 🌟 my Repo! https://github.com/CCOSTAN/Home-AssistantConfig
Oh crap. Did I miss the appointment?
I missed setting a time
worked 70 hours this week, just haven't had time to think about the podcast
if the final slot in the list suited that would be good as the show notes are a bit light at the moment too
hmm
Want to just jump on and rif for 40 minutes?
Worst case, toss it or cut it up and add to another show. 😃
@blazing prawn are you available?
can we do in about half an hour? Apparently I need to go to the supermarket
Yeah..I'm easy. I'm in front of the computer now.
I have nothing planned so I might suck as a guest anyway and we'll be done in 15. 😃
Oh I plan on picking your brain about your floorplan
You guys still good to go without me? Just need to finish up some stuff for work @abstract pagoda @blazing prawn
actually looks like I can't today, sorry guys. If there is a 3rd persona available you guys can record on CAST and I'll do the edit etc
damn
No worries. Hopefully we can work out another time.
sorry all, it's just been one of those weeks. I'll sort a new scheduling link later on today, we'll just have to miss a week
Unless you want to do a 1-on-1 and we can edit that into the Podcast? Thoughts @abstract pagoda
sure can do
That works for me @blazing prawn. Let's give it a go.
If it sucks we are no worse than now. 😃
@abstract pagoda are you able to give me cast details or something?
Exactly @sullen laurel
yep I'll PM details
cheers
@abstract pagoda I've given you privs on this channel.
With recards to expanding hasspodcast.io, if you click on each episode title it'll take you to show notes
Also, the logo should be 3000x3000
(because that's what iTunes requires)
Thanks @willow fossil
Let's definitely have you on #5
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I've installed DIscord on my phone and turned on notifications for all messages in this channel, so hopefully I won't miss anything else!
podcast is nice, but just wondering why not just do a video with it too? Telling new stuff is nice, showing is nicer imho. (not saying its bad right now ofcourse, its not. I like to be on top of the new stuff)
ow and the podcasts on the site, if you skip to like 50% and listen in further, i just keep on getting stuttering. and its not my download speed issues..
itunes works just fine btw
@mint rover what browser are you using? What page are you seeing that on? Just tried myself on Firefox on hasspodcast.io and had no problems skipping through to the end
Riemers is away: sleeping on https://github.com/home-assistant/home-assistant/issues/8309
I was able to skip up to 40mins in and not stuttering here 😦
I'm guessing its an issue with the web-player. Might be worth downloading and then skip through to where you need be
yeah must be browser related
use chrome though, but if i download the file manually, it gets about 2mb/s so link is fine
moved to itunes now, that works fine 😛
😄
been a while since i used podcasts in itunes, since you know, spotify etc
i remember you could add breakpoints into podcasts too, the cover art would change then too.. good old days
Oh I totally forgot about those!
Been a while since I've used Podcasts (thanks to Spotify) and iTunes 😉
@mint rover thanks for the feedback! Video is expensive, especially with many hosts around the world. I haven't yet found a simple solution to video that includes separate audio tracks for every host, which is essential
Riemers is away: sleeping on https://github.com/home-assistant/home-assistant/issues/8309
@abstract pagoda whats the reason for needing seperate audio per host? You would make a live video and cut out the parts you want right?
It makes it very hard to have clean audio without it. For example in the last show someone had echo when everyone else was talking, it was very distracting. I wouldn't have been able to edit that out without separate tracks
that makes sense
a normal live video isb't that hard though, seperate tracks.. i have not seen that yet
indeed. None of the tools for podcasting that do separate tracks also support video
There is a Home-Assistant Podcast?
Oh man, that's awesome. How did I not know about that before?
@quasi blaze Because you didn't ⭐ my repo! 😃
https://github.com/CCOSTAN/Home-AssistantConfig/blob/master/packages/hasspodcast.yaml
@sullen laurel lol!
That would do it...
@sullen laurel you're such a salesman! 😛
Ha! It's fake currency but I love it. 😃 I'll take them all! 😃
@abstract pagoda dunno if it works for video, http://www.callburner.com/how-to-record-each-party-on-a-skype-call-to-a-separate-file
We use podcast specific tools for recording as it's less work for guests, they just have to show up. I don't like imposing on guests who are giving up their time by sending them instructions for things like a call recorder 😃
LOL that's brilliant
true, but only the host need to do that, same for http://www.evaer.com/
I only have a face for radio.
A face for radio, and a voice for print, as they say 😉
It's no coincidence that I've been only blogging for the last decade. 😃 Yesterday was a step into voice.. it was a great experience BTW.. I'm down to join you fellas whenever you need a warm body.
