Hi all! Just about 1 week left of Hacktoberfest! I'll be hosting a very 👻 SPOOKY 🎃 Community Help Desk this Halloween (Oct. 31st) at 7pm EST! I'll make sure any awesome contributions submitted prior are counted for Hacktoberfest as I review them that evening, so if you want to contribute to the CircuitPython libraries as part of the event, please don't let the approaching deadline stop you. If you're looking for some good first issues to work on, you can find those here:
https://circuitpython.org/contributing/open-issues?label=good-first-issue
Don't forget to register for Hacktoberfest as well, if you're planning to submit as part of it: https://hacktoberfest.com/
https://2023.oshwa.org/ Reminder about the Open Hardware Summit deadline on December 16th. Please submit, please share! It will be remote and in person. We’re looking for talks, demos, and workshops!
If there are any Sydney-based Circuitpythonistas, we're considering organising an informal MicroPython meetup/lunch on Friday 3rd December. Plan is to meet at one of the food courts near Central Station (exact location TBD, probably World Square).
Ongoing discussion in the Sydney channel in the MicroPython Discord https://discordapp.com/channels/574275045187125269/1014033505925214308 but I'll also keep this post updated. (Please don't reply here, to avoid noise on this channel, but emoji responses welcome 😄 )
(Hope this is the right place to post this)
@glossy hedge is there work being done for the OHSummit badge for this year? I have been a key contributor in the past few years and haven't heard anything about it this year.

If anyone is attending DEFCON 31 this year, please consider coming to my talk: The Promise and Perils of Planetary-Scale ISPs, Friday, Aug 11, 1200-1250 in the Rotunda track of Policy @ DEF CON. That's in rooms 218 and 219 at Caesar's Forum Convention Center
I forgot this discord existed and didn't mention it, but PyConAU just ran in Adelaide, Australia and the sessions were all recorded, you can watch the videos on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@PyConAU ... the "Pycon Fair" video includes some footage of my shonky CircuitPython powered MIDI guitar hero controller.

B-sides Philly is happening Fri. Dec 8th. There will be a hacking village and a music village. Seems like a cool scene.
I'm not sure I'll make it. I will do PyCascades because it is in Seattle where I live. 🙂
I think jeff is planning to do pycon
I am thinking about it.
I submitted a poster session, and will most likely go whether they accept it or not
I am planning to go, hopefully through my employer but it's my intention to go regardless.

I'm not involved and don't know; I'm just passing it along as interesting. Feel free to email/reach out to them 🙂
oh well, the poster session is rejected, but I will still bring one robot
Anyone going to PyCascades 2024? I would find it fun to connect with some folks...
I'll be there. I'm giving a talk

Hi all! We’re FCC Studio, based in Long Island City near Court Square.
This is last minute, but we wanted to post that we’re having a gallery show with our recent art and electronics projects today and tomorrow in Manhattan. Come by and have fun!
We'll be there today, November 8 (until 6pm) and tomorrow, November 9 (until 7pm) @ 618 E 9th St, New York, NY
This Wednesday, we’re hosting a GitHub Social Club at Bibliotheque in SoHo in NYC. It’s a low-key hangout for devs, builders, and open source fans. No talks, no pitches, just space to connect, share ideas, and swap stories with others in the community.
Would love to see you there, and if you’re up for it, invite friends or help spread the word. DM me if you want to register!
There’ll be coffee, cookies, limited-edition GitHub swag, some casual games, and a chance to meet the teams behind Copilot, Next, Developer Productivity, and Startups.
Great crowd, good vibes—a chance to network and geek out in a relaxed setting. Hope to see you there!

OOh, new channel!
It's a Neo-Channel!
@shadow spear,Wait, what do you mean, 'added'?
Good idea. I've missed John Parks twice in the last 4 weeks. Noe and Pedro and 3D printing is very important to me and my projects so I try not miss their show. I hope these type of events are listed. Webcasts rule in my book these days. The interaction and recognition of the audience is just so 21st century.
Three Cheers. 🍸
the list of events is available somewhere or is it an open list?
@sly rune that stuff will be in #live-broadcast-chat I think. This is for events in meatspace.
@feral prawn Ok, I get it, but what in the world is meatspace? Are you coining a term here or was I on Mars for too long? 😃
haha sorry I'm one of those dang kids. it means in person. as opposed to cyberspace.
it's kind of silly but it seemed like the easiest way to explain 😃
@feral prawn Ah, you mean "Reality", got it. 😃
Ok, so if Pumping Station One here in Chicago had something scheduled for people to attend, we could list it here. Yes/No?
@sly rune go for it!
@tender glen ahhhhh, dunno how? Not sure what format. But I think I get the jist of it.
I have a link to their events page. If that's what your looking for. With a description of course.
yeah, just post it like a normal message
I think this channel is meant as a stepping stone to private channels for specific events
For those in the Chicago area, the link will take you to PS1 events page. This is a very busy place.
there's a hackerspace in Buffalo, but then I would have to make eye contact with people and stuff
is shy
@feral prawn how much does the memberships cost?
dang
- you have to do orientation classes which also cost $$
oh it's monthly. dunno if yours is.
so on top of the membership fee you have to take courses for the tools you want to use ($65-85)
yeah $125 monthly + course
you get to use a tool for 60 mins then you pay $1 extra per minute..
wowwww how do people have that much money
(I mean not judging! I hate financial judgment and stuff)
just... that seems prohibitive to getting lots of people to join
Our maker space is $65/m. However you get a key and it's 24x7 access which is pretty cool.
Still too rich for my blood though. Lol.
that sounds more reasonable!
@icy harness Yeah it really is. If you pay $80/m you can also attend unlimited workshops/classes. There's also a full blown woodshop you would gain access to as well.
mine doesn't actually seem to list what it has anywhere. so that's... weird
@light tendon $80 for unlimited workshops and classes? what a steal!
Actually I was a little off on the numbers. It's only $50/ if you don't want to use the wood and metal shop.
https://www.lansingmakersnetwork.org/become-a-member/
It's the thing I miss most about not living in the city
@thorny fable @light tendon @icy harness My son told me to give him the dimensions of a project I was working on and he would be able to 3D print it at his local library. I thought for a minute, Libraries, that's it. Libraries should have Makerspaces.
Any thoughts???
@sly rune some actually do have maker like activities. I volunteer for a non-profit that teaches all sorts of STEM stuff. I contributed/created a Raspberry Pi class for them
@light tendon See, now that's what I'm talking about. I mentioned it to our Director and she wasn't interested. Imagine that.
Three Cheers @light tendon
@sly rune Too bad, not everyone is on board with STEM education. Try a local community center, see if they are interested. Thanks!
Yer Velcome.... ><>
@sly rune the libraries near me don't have printers or anything like that :<
My library has three 3D printers!
And a recording studio
I just pay 5 cents a gram of filament. It's pretty nice.
hey can you add me to the Seattle Maker Faire

I managed to do it through the server settings

just add you @proven turret
For those in France, in Toulouse, the PyConFR has some nice speaker on micropython (Hugo Herter) and I will try my best to present micro:bit and also some micropython.
French or not, you're welcome there on this week end 23/24 september.
There's another event coming up for Seattle folks: Geek Girl Con is happening 9/30 and 10/1 - @undone talon and I will be talking about getting started with Arduino, and I'll also be doing a panel on 3D printing, and one about self-guided learning/making
@limber berry Recommended age?
@wet birch they say all ages, and have discounted or free passes for kids under 12, but definitely check the schedule, they sometimes run more mature panels in the evenings https://geekgirlcon.com/
they are more of a pop culture convention that is looking to present more content about making, with the goal of encouraging girls and underrepresented groups to go into STEM and "geeky" fields
Attendees cosplay?
Ok, I'm reading as I'm asking questions. 😃
My daughter is 10. Way into video games, less into making. Though I originally made the portal gun for her so she could be chell for Halloween.
Think a 12 year-old boy would enjoy it?
this will be my first year as a panelist, but it sort of quickly snowballed and now I'm doing 3 panels and hosting the fashion show (oops)
i'm sure there will be lots of overwatch cosplay
oh! i'm sure there will be a companion cube or two, at least!
Ha!
you made the portal gun, nice!
anywhoo, to keep it about events, if you end up checking out geek girl con, hope you enjoy it! i'll be there both days being overcommitted as usual 😃
I made the gun two years ago but the electronics fizzled an hour before trick-or-treating. Took me two years to get back to the project...
What panels you on?
on sat: one about 3d printing, and one about getting started with Arduino (talking with Tony D)
on sun: one about self-guided learning with 3 other makers in different fields (costumer, engineer, blacksmith)
Nice
'night! Thanks for the notice!

@undone talon I'm not sure if you know this but, the link to the learn guide: "MicroPython Hardware: PCA9685 PWM & Servo Driver" is giving a '404' error.
@shadow spear I'm not sure if you know this but, the link to the learn guide: "MicroPython Hardware: PCA9685 PWM & Servo Driver" is giving a '404' error.
@prisma osprey where is the link?
It's the learn guide: MicroPython Hardware: PCA9685 PWM & Servo Driver
It was working yesterday late afternoon, early evening.
That's a link to a specific page in the guide. Looks like it was either deleted or renamed. Which broke the URL. The URL to the overall guide seems to be fine though.
@median venture added!
That's strange, when I click on the learn guide page and search 'micropython' and click on that link it returns a '404'. when I click your link, it takes me to the page.
ok. i get the same thing. weird.
ok. i thought i was going crazy.
just use that link i sent for now. i'll pass this on.
Will do. Thank you.
the guide probably got changed/updated and something just got wrapped around the axle.
Or maybe the link is not well orthographied
Lol I don't even know if I can say Orthographied in english
Sorry guys 😂
Spelled lol
Thats the word
@prisma osprey it will self heal in time
no problem. Thank you.
oh thanks for catching the broken linke @prisma osprey yeah we've been renaming and updating guides and it looks like maybe the links are causing some trouble. do you remember where that failing link was located that you found? i can look at getting it updated to point at the right spot
@undone talon Thanks Tony. Yes the failing link is: https://learn.adafruit.com/micropython-hardware-pca9685-pwm-and-servo-driver/software?view=all
on Amtrak - heading to MakerFaire NYC - please add me to #world-maker-faire <@&327289013561982976>
@tribal ginkgo done
thanks - frequent Adafruit customer, looking forward to first MakerFaire experience!
@rotund gazelle Bandwidth at the fair will be interesting...
I imagine so -- I imagine this is the site for us remote lurkers to keep an eye on
Random tidbits from faire folks
@rotund gazelle Twitter would probably be good.
This may be our chance to push discord as the Makers Twitter Alternative
@rotund gazelle thats what we're working on
Excellent
Oh yeah. I will definitely be trying to post stuff here.
Good, some of us must live it vicariously this weekend
A group shot of Adafruitarians would be a fine touch
😄
What are your thoughts on young makers?
👍 👍 👍
I am one
The more, the merrier. As someone who works with youth via the 4H, it's important to provide opportunties. It helps them develop essential skills, provides them an activity and venue to do positive activities, and most importantly....to have fun 😃
As a middle-aged maker myself, you really see some fresh and innovative ideas from the minds of children. Things I seriously would never have considered. Plus with young makers (and makers in general, regardless of age), I see no potential downsides -- just advantages.
In case someone is in Costa Rica this weekend, we are going to have a maker/robotics fair this Saturday.
Info here, or let me know. http://www.greencore.co.cr/exporobotica.html
Anybody have a report from GeekGirlCon today?
@undone talon is tweeting pictures....
@silk acorn Followed. Thanks!
<@&327289013561982976> I'm going to #ohsummit20 this week 😃
@odd siren I added you to the role. the #ohsummit20 channel is open to everyone but having the role will make it possible to mention you as part of the group
cool, thanks!
no problem!
Anyone going to Oakland today?
Anyone going to the Hackaday Superconference this weekend???

FYI, BETT, a (free to attend) educational technology show, starts tomorrow in London, UK: https://www.bettshow.com/
Bett Show 2020
Bett is the first industry show of the year in the education technology landscape, bringing together 850 leading companies, 103 exciting new edtech start ups and over 34,700 attendees
@gray sinew this sounds really great. I wish I know of one in the USA.
@magic crypt I'm not very familiar with the BETT show, but it sounds like a few "tech in education" shows I know of here in the States. There's FETC in Florida, which was just the other week, so you've missed this year. There's TCEA in Texas which is coming up on Austin in a couple weeks. And the big one here in the States is ISTE, in late June, which is in Anaheim this year. Googling those acronyms will probably lead you to more info. Holler if you don't find anything.
@magic crypt I only know BETT from London. They also run elsewhere, I see Mexico, Brazil, Dubai, Malaysia but I don't know what the size is like for those shows. North America is a clear omission. That could suggest there's already an established leader there for educational technology?
Thinking of heading to Teardown this year.
What/where/when is Teardown?
@fathom frost I'm planning on going. @uncut tinsel https://www.crowdsupply.com/teardown/portland-2020
I used to exhibit at Maker Faire SF and NY every year and am getting itchy... 🙂
I think we all feel that way @fathom frost -- it'll be interesting to see what happens regarding those locations. In the meantime, I've noticed an uptick in local Maker Faires being advertised around the states & the world.
Howdy folks! My robotics team is hosting an open house March 2nd. We are only 30 mins from NYC and would love it if you could stop by! https://www.eventbrite.com/e/mamaroneck-robotics-open-house-tickets-93433737825

Hi everyone, I have been working with our local hospitals and our STEM Alliance and we have put together a Zoom call to discuss solutions for the lack of medical supplies specifically in the NY area. All are welcome to join our production and distribution network though!
Join local makers in discussing how to get to work on much needed solutions for medical hardware and protective gear. We can “Make as a Community” and hack this pandemic. Immediate needs: 3D printing, laser cutters and sewing. Let’s hear your ideas.

Hello community ! I'm sharing here an online workshop that I'll hold on June 24th [in english] about my software "Chataigne", that enables artists, technicians and tinkerers to easily connect, communicate and synchronize software, devices, webservices and plenty other stuff together. It's free, it's open-source, and it's for you 🙂
It also has proven a great way to connect serial-based devices like arduino boards and control them through timelines or interaction from other softwares and sensors.
here is the website of the software : http://benjamin.kuperberg.fr/chataigne
here is the link to the youtube live event : https://youtu.be/RSBU9MwJNLY
and you can find out about projects using it on the youtube channel and on Chataign's discord server

Anyone here have kids doing the "Chefology" Maker Camp right now? My daughter's signed up but the zoom call indicates it hasn't started or she hasn't been admitted, but it supposedly kicked off at 4. Having a hard time figuring out how to actually get in touch with a human. 🙂
Maybe 4 in a different time zone?
I checked, but thanks! EventBrite even sent us the note saying "your class is starting now!" Managed to track down a number Galileo Camps that's partnering with Make, apparently they can't get in touch with the instructor, so shrug. Rebooking to next week. Thanks again!
At least you know now.

Hello folks! I lead Seattle's ~4k member IoT Hub Meetup group, where we have several entrepreneur members who need to build connected hardware as part of their value proposition. Based on our members' feedback and the lack of a local hardware startup ecosystem, we've been hosting a series of hardware startup-focused meetups that this community might find useful.
Topics/themes include:
- Lessons learned from current and former hardware entrepreneurs.
- Design and engineering hardware products for commercialization
- Selecting suppliers and scaling up onshore/nearshore/offshore manufacturing
- How to find, acquire and support customers of hardware products
- Building culture, hiring talent and skills for hardware startups
- Protecting your IP and obtaining funding for hardware startups
For anyone interested, recordings of our meetups so far are available on our YouTube channel, including a series that we co-hosted with the University of Washington's Comotion Labs Hardware Hall, a new hardware-focused startup incubator in Seattle.

Last year, over 600 participants signed up for a free PCB Design course at TeachMePCB.com (you can catch out the content using guest code "RCS" https://teachmepcb.com/enrol/index.php?id=4) Every participant that completed the course received an assembled version of their board design. The course is about to start back up in October -- it's free, so sign up now! The content this time will aim at new engineers - and focus more on routing best practices, signal integrity, and more! The only advertising allowed are logos on the side of the screen, and you won't be spammed. Hopefully it'll help some folks out there.
