Hello world ๐
Hello!
Hi all
@fallow basin I saw your mystery boxes on the schedule, I'm super excited for that
Thanks @rotund relic !
Any suggestions for flying with homemade electronics? Should I even be concerned?
I brought a lot with me to Europe in the spring. Most of the time they didn't care but others they want to scan them separately like a laptop
@muted fern Thanks
@dense minnow A smile and an open attitude helps tremendously. You'll get questioned as "what is this? what do you do?"....sometimes those questions lead to "my kid is interested in it" or "I remember doing this with a radio shack kit when I was a child!"
๐
@fallow basin Is it "John Park" or "John Parks"?
Doh. Park singular. I'll yell at someone there ; )
I was thinking, maybe there are more than one of you.
For your next escape room trick, this is how you can clone yourself with a gemma m0, a couple of alligator clips, and a vial of green ooze from mars.
got it thx @verbal trench
np Mr. Parks ๐
for those 21+ looking to spend some time post-mf with other makers - MatterHackers and Inventables are having a post-Makerfaire event in Flushing, Queens. It's right near WMF and if you're into 3D Carving/Printing/Making, it'll be a fun time!
@verbal trench will you be at WMF on Saturday?
Yes I will be ๐
Anyone who wants hands on with PiGlass just let me know I'm eager to share my project
I'll be there Saturday and Sunday
@dense minnow will you have a booth or are you roaming 'wearables' style with PiGlass?
I'll be roaming I made plans to go too late to get a booth
I would love to have gotten a booth because ive been busy this summer making things @hearty sinew
@dense minnow What's your PiGlass project?
Current Features of PiGlass:
Take HD pictures and videos
Videos get uploaded to dropbox
Pictures get uploaded to imgur
i get a push notification to my phone with the imgur link for the photo it just uploaded so i can share it any way i want
Bluetooth Music streaming from phone to PiGlass
Youtube audio streaming via mps-youtube
Live Stream camera to Youtube
Stream YouTube videos in hd
Twilio texting
Features im working on:
voice commands
screencasting
I took the mic off for now
Very cool ๐
@verbal trench it's only about 2 months old at this point there is still a lot I want to add to it
I plan on getting many puzzled looks at the maker faire
@dense minnow if I see you walking around with that, I'll be sure to say hiya!
@wispy cove ๐ it will be fully functional because I'll have a 4g hotspot
@dense minnow oh boy, that's awesome. I've used up my phone's battery a lot at makerfaire
"pro"- tip for makerfaires - always bring a phone battery bank, theres a lot to take pics of and you'll want to ๐
I have many of them ranging from small to a little redicilous
I think my biggest is 80wh
wow, I think mine is in the 3000mAh range
The big one is an omnicharge it has a outlet plug in addition to the usbs
๐ฎ
It can run a TV for about 2-3 hours
I have a 5000mah pack w/ 2 ports @ 5v2a each....and it has a plug built in. It can be a battery or a wall charger. It's a little bulkier than either one by themselves, but when their powers are combined, they are CAPTAIN PLANET!
Folks, if this is your first makerfaire -- wear comfy shoes, drink plenty of water, eat a good lunch (food is a bit pricey there, FYI), and bring that phone battery pack. If there's rain forecasted, bring waterproof shoes/umbrella/raincoat.
Most of the area is paved, but some places are still in the grass.
I never said this -- they do prohibit outside food, but it's never been strictly enforced. Last three years I've brought in a sandwich and a bottle of water in my bag -- no one said a thing.
There are places onsite you can refill a water bottle (free of charge).
But...like I said, I never said this. Ya'll never heard it from me.
to add onto mr certainly's great advice:
- absolutely bring a water bottle, you'll need it. it's a lot of walking and there are water fountains (for you new englanders: bubblers) near every restroom in the hall of science building
- pack a sandwich or something that doesn't need cooling/ice, like a muffin or a bagel (fitting, since it's NYC), in your bag to avoid lines for food
- if you forget to do that, there's a cheaper food option INSIDE the hall of science itself. The HOS has a food court near the main lobby, which mostly serves employees during the faire but you can eat there. Shorter lines.
@verbal trench @wispy cove this in the first non mini maker faire I'm going to and I appreciate the pro tips
@dense minnow You're in for a treat. I've been to NYC makerfaire many times. It'll spoil you in regards to the mini maker faires :)
I think a cellphone is the most useful tool you can carry. The camera will help you remember things, as you'll easily get overwhelmed. And if you attend any presentations, you can use the audio recorder function in case you miss anything.
After walking all day, sitting in the comfy auditorium with AC with dim lights....zzzzzzzzz. Sorry folks, I've dozed off once or twice in there.
@verbal trench I actually sent a project to the NYC maker faire a couple years ago with my local maker group "Cape Cod Makers"
@dense minnow wait, you're on cape? I go to school pretty close to there
Yup I'm in sandwich @wispy cove
We'll be at the WMF both days, but probably leaving a little early on Sunday, there being a small matter of a plane to catch Monday - in Virginia.
do you have a booth this year @hot hound ?
I'll be over from the UK and wandering around ๐
Sometime on the Friday or Monday I'll be drinking and playing Bubble Bobble in Barcade Brooklyn.
I get in tomorrow and am hoping to go to https://www.meetup.com/MakeIt-NYC/events/242653432/ if I'm not too jetlagged.
That looks cool. Unfortunately I'm driving in early Saturday morning before WMF opens to save a night on hotel costs
all good @rotund relic
most of us will be there both days
I need to look at the schedule and plan it out
I'll be there both days as well. I'm trying to get all of my homework for Monday done by Friday because otherwise it isn't happening, and then I can plan out my weekend
I like that they posted all of the food places and their websites
I've been able to look at the menus to figure out where I can eat without bothering any of my food allergies/sensitivities
excellent!
Isn't it nice that kindness begets kindness? And sentient robots. But mostly kindness ๐
yay @wanton shard
yay yay!
bork, bork, bork!
Who knows when you can go to setup with the VIP pass
@rotund relic also finishing up hw/studies before friday to do makerfaire this weekend ๐
Ah, this one then ๐
exactly @noble yacht
If Limor is going to be there, I'm bringing my first Adafruit kit to try and get it signed ๐
@noble yacht did you get the signed Make?
No :-(... It never came back in stock
ah, well coordinating here is where you'll find out about it
will probably play it by ear
It would make my day...year...
we can definitely meet up for sure
@noble yacht same way I feel
maker faire is super busy for phil and limor though so they like to play it by ear
That's fair
thats why we have this chat though, so we can coordinate
Yay!
๐
๐
Hi
Anyone know where press gets credentials at makerfaire? Not seeing anything about it anywhere ๐ค
@dusty minnow https://makerfaire.com/media-center/#event-registration
Odd
Didnโt get email. The approval message said โYour application has been approved. As we get closer to the Faire, please be on the lookout for details about the Faire including where to collect your credentials on-site, how to get to the Faire, etc.โ 3 days ago. Itโs a bit close now so itโd be great to just know before I get there where to go
Is there any meetup happining friday night that some other people here are going to be attending?
@dusty minnow search for "Final Confirmation"
@finite sundial nothing on my radar yet. where are you staying?
I'm staying in flushing friday and saturday nights
@dusty minnow the location is "111th Street at 49th Avenue entrance to NYSCI"
@muted fern I am in flushing too. I am staying in new york until tuesday.
Cool
Itโs a bit odd I didnโt get that email. Iโll email pr/Bridgette and ask about it.
Definitely didnโt receive. Not in spam.
ok, see you there! I've gotta go pack
@muted fern Night. Lets talk friday night latter.
๐ I get in at 4pm tomorrow and there is the makeit nyc thing in the evening
@muted fern I am getting to new york on friday.
See ya there ๐
Ok great just got email
Checking in to DiscorD.
@dusty minnow who do you work for?
The Verge @nova plinth
Cool
Hiiii, is anyone will be part of the maker faire??
@hidden axle there are a number of people from Adafruit who will be there, including @timid pollen , @muted fern , @lucid token , and @shell horizon !!! I, alas, am in Seattle, regretting not making the trip to NY!
Not part of the Maker Faire this year (a first, I think), but if I can keep up with where people are meeting up, I'll be there. With lights on:-)
Don't think Adafruit has ever been part of the Faire per se' which I've always found odd given the proximty and a fantastic chance to promote.... however, lots of Adafruit products in use and normally a few "adjunct" folks like folks who had written books about Adafruit products and such. This year, TonyD and John Parks will be giving talks (JohnP is actually on a panel)
Ah, perhaps I misunderstood. I took "part of" to mean "will be there and meeting up with people." I didn't consider "presenting"....
i think they'll be streaming some of the fair and hopefully the talks at https://makerfaire.com/live/
looking for the "jumping up and down with excitement" emoji
First timer here. Any advice for how many talks/performances I can realistically attend? I'm tough, but I don't know if I
can attend sixteen talks over eight hours!
@vast hornet I am a first timer too, but from going to other conventions I suggest writing down all the talks you want to see, and then all the ones you really really want to see. From there, explore the faire and go to the talks you really want to go to. If you are near the stage where a talk that you wanted to see is happening, go see it, but if not you won't feel like you missed anything by not seeing a talk. There's so much happening at maker faire that you don't have to attend a ton a panels to get a lot out of the experience
Thanks @rotund relic . This is a work sponsered trip so I really want to make sure they get their money's worth!
This will be my 3rd year but this year i will be part of the makerfaire i will be at the paddle moat boat battle with ocean state maker mill. If you guys have time to make a pattle boat you could win a 3d printer ๐ p.s not promoting
@hidden axle ocean state! is Kelly still out there?
I'm planning to go to the MatterHackers event tonight, anyone else?
@vivid ember yes he is, he will be coming too
I'm not gonna make the make it NYC event in Brooklyn. I just landed in Newark. ๐
I'm sorry...about the newark part.
No problem! I made it ok
Hope your trip was quiet and uneventful.
Anyone on here from the hackaday/Kickstarter Meetup? Still going?
@cold crag I got in too late
Same. Just chilling out in flushing and finding food
@cold crag I'll be in flushing tomorrow night and saturday
What's everyone's plan tomorrow? I'm staying in flushing until Monday
@flint osprey heading to flushing after work
@muted fern will you be at paella tomorrow at the venue?
what is that @flint osprey
I'll buy a round if anyone makes it to Parkside for a drink...
what day @noble yacht ?
I'll be there tomorrow...
kk, I'll be in flushing tomorrow evening
need to get more details on this paella thing
I found that too but I don't see a time and place on there
@muted fern
thank you @flint osprey !
@muted fern no problem
@flint osprey it auto filled your details
I won't register but will try to get @fallow basin to sneak me in
@muted fern okay I can try to find a different link one second
No worries @flint osprey
@cold crag are you wearing the high five counter or is the other guy wearing it. Either way, where will you be
Joel telling will be wearing it
Cool hope to see you. I built a bunch of modifications to my wheelchair (shattered ankle) that I will be using there
K
If you see a wookiee that's escaped captivity, attempting to pose as a human....say hi ๐
Prepping to heading out 3hrs drive ๐
@hidden axle I'm about to do the same in a few hours, sans that awesome helmet you have
Driving down tonight but staying in Secaucus. Wondering if there's any ham radio folks around. Planning on being on 520 unless there's a local repeater that everyone will be using.
I am heading in with my counsin and her teenage son for our first faire tomorrow. any tips or tricks?
@wanton shard - comfortable shoes, bring water to drink and snacks (food lines can get long), and prepare to have a wonderful time and see many amazing things:-)
@hot hound do they let backpacks in and such?
(sorry didnt meant o DM you still learning discord to be honest)
Yes - I've always been an exhibitor before so don't know how thorough a search goes on, but backpacks are all around - the Makers often have things they wear as attendees, with the associated stuff .
@hot hound Cool....good to know... Thank yoU!
@wanton shard You're welcome. I'll be walking around in garments that light up; hope to see you there.
Wonderful I will be in some leverl of totoro shirt haven't picked which one yet
I suggest using your cameraphone to document ideas and things - its easy to be overwhelmed. Also, bring a battery pack for your phone....
Bring a water bottle (any disposable one will do) as there are water fountains on premises.
It will be warm, and you will be on your feet most of the day, mostly outside.
Technically, they do not allow outside food. In the last 4 years, no one has stopped me for bringing in a sandwich tucked away in my backpack.
If you are close enough I recommend commuting in via bike. The valet is right in front of main entrance - so easy!
Have street parked before as well and that involves many minutes hunting and ending up a few blocks away
Mass transit is the easiest way to get there.... the7 train had a stop a few mins walk from the science center
Have fun, everyone! I wish I were there!
@verbal trench Most of it is outside? I didn't know that. and thanks for the waterfountain info that makes it a lot easier
@fair void is the valet only for Bikes? I am driving in from NJ. I dont know public transit well and dont feel comfy learning with kid in tow
Getting ready to leave soon
I am on a bus right now making my way up. Only 4 more hours left.
@digital relic Was that for me?
Indeed it was. Autocompletel failure.
looks like some Jossie Esteban for road tunes?
There is parking (not cheap), https://makerfaire.com/new-york/getting-to-maker-faire/. It's not a bad walk from there, and there are limited shuttles from teh parking (at Citifield), to the Faire itself.
@muted fern Ahhhh, psst, hey, Scott? Ummmm, could you put a sticker on that and address it to me. I won't say anything.
You didn't see that's already addressed to me @jaunty otter
WHERE
Lol
lol
I thought that was a basket o' beef at first. Was about to fire up the smoker!
@sturdy ledge great now i am hungry
Paella will be good
Hmm, smoked BBQ. There's a great place on the way back to Manhattan -- John Browns Smokehouse in Long Island City.
Nothing better than a 12-hour smoked Circuit Playground Express.
Will arrive around 7:15
anyone coming in from NJ? I am driving and willing to pick folks up if they are near/on the way to have travel buddies
@muted fern I've got to say, that's a MUCH nicer care package than I ever received from work, wow
wistfully wishes his place of employment actually cared.
We care, Mr. Certainly.
And, yeah, engineering companies can be kinda....cold to their employees. Adafruit seems to be the exception that proves the rule.
(Never thought that phrase made a lot of sense)
Don't get me wrong, my direct manager is really great. And if I truly didn't like what I did or where I was, I wouldn't have been here for nearly 8 years. But....it's a Game of Compromises that seems to be getting worse every quarter.
(Game of Compromises is a hit new HBO show ๐ )
Aerospace was particularly brutal in that respect; similar experience with a splendid manager but the layers above were....an HBO series.
I was there for seventeen years. The first 16 were really good.
Then, an ice-breathing fire dragon, or a fire breathing ice dragon, showed up, and...well. You know.
What would terrify me is a dragon that breathed humidity.
Worked with someone like that, actually, Had quite a pronounced lisp.
Words like "specifications", wow. Would take the snap out of a cracker.
I'm stealing that phrase. "Take the snap out of a cracker."
Would appreciate a little TM sign after, if you can swing it
Wait, we're about open source, here, what am I thinking?
Seriously, when he spoke, you had to take a step back. Brilliant guy, just not a good...speaker.
The takeaway here is....public speaking skills are essential. Or um, you'll um....sound like um.....ummm.....ummmm....this.
๐
Looking on the positive side, we all have room to grow and be better at it
Yes. Stay positive.
Like, you know umm, basically like, you know. Lol
twitches uncontrollably at @odd drum's example.
There have been special moments at design reviews, wincing a bit at the nervous presenter. Then, as only karma can finesse in these situations, I get up there, and forget absolutely everything I was going to say, and stare helplessly at the projected image.
"Do not just read the slides". <proceeds to do exactly that>
Hey my Twitter is @DekwanPerry if anyone wants to check me out. Made it yesterday for tweeting about makerfaire.
Oh hey that's on topic @dusty minnow
๐
I have had near anxiety attacks out of nowhere. I mean...I know my stuff. I'm a pro at it. And I've done public speaking since I was in middle school. But every now and again, something happens and I have to really focus on not derailing everything.
I ask a trusted friend/collegue how noticable it was...and they usually say I was cool as a cucumber.
I only wish I felt that way ๐
haha, true true
I worked local government for 10 years. Your middle management mind tricks have no power over me!
Yeah, usually I'm fine up there, but on more than one occasion, the choo choo came right off the rails. Mind goes blank.
@void steppe You mean, your mind pulled a NJ Transit?
Ouch. That's brutal.
The Caffeine Defense
I don't achieve consciousness without it
Anyway, I actually came here to ask that maker-faire attendees make a special effort to take pictures and post them here, to those of us trapped, ever so far away.
If there's one thing, on flickr and google photos, people take tons of NYC MakerFaire photos
For those going, your smartphone camera will be essential. There's so much there, you'll forget more than you'll remember.
Looking for photos that accent Adafruitarians in their natural habitat, which is why I bring it up here
@dusty minnow Followed
Followed back ๐
Won't that make you two walk in circles?
@void steppe lol
Walking in circles around a Circuit Playground. You can use the IR sensor to count laps.
So is anyone doing/know of anything interesting to do tonight? If traffic keeps getting worse, I might not make it, but I am still holding out hope that I will arrive at a reasonable hour.
I have made it to my hotel! But more importantly PiGlass made the trip ok
Do you think I brought enough batteries?
Bring a car battery just to be safe
@paper crescent ๐
@dense minnow I think the bigger issue you might have is if you have enough chargers to charge all the batteries
I do lol
I plan on using PiGlass and a 4g hotspot to stream to YouTube as much as I can
Made it to the Hotel... SpringHill... not super close, but I had points ๐
@noble yacht that's where I am
@dense minnow ... I'll buy ya a drink if I see ya... I might Uber it over to Park Side... best food, but not casual...
@noble yacht ๐
Iโll be at makerfaire in an hour
@wanton shard valet is only for bikes. There are parking lots with shuttles and it looks like itโs $10 https://makerfaire.com/new-york-2015/getting-to-maker-faire/#parking&shuttles. Escaping inside is a great way to beat the heat too. Inside there are plenty of exhibits to keep you cool. And if it is like the other years there is an interactive โplaygroundโ that has a water feature that grabs a lot of attention - itโs like a water mill wheel and cork screw device.
@void steppe https://www.youtube.com/c/MattDesmarais88
Many thanks, @dense minnow
i may have to stop the stream to demo all the functions to people
Just realized it might have been rude to me to have asked in a public forum
I didn't consider that, just that there might be an issue of privacy or something
anything i put on the clearnet i expect the world to maybe watch
Like, you had 200 pictures of...ok this is too much like thinking.
That's a fair expectation, and yet so many people fail to expect exactly that. Anyway, thanks for the URL
Nice pic
When one portapotty closes, another opens....which is why everyone should have flush cutters with them ๐
Omg lady ada 3 feet away
So my bus was supposed to be at the terminal by 6:30. It's 730 and we are still in traffic in down town ny.
@finite sundial did you come in to Newark or something?? Ugh...
Don't know, but we have been on Lexington for about 30 mins.
@noble yacht We came in on 278 and went across a Randells island to get to Manhattan.
LaGuardia is walking distance ... lol
If the bus takes you to Riker's Island, you're going the wrong way. You're not going to see Picard's executive officer....you're going to a prison ๐
Your roommates might be Darmok and Jalad.
Timber, when the walls fell.. you're dealing with geeks
I have found my people.
๐จ ๐จ ๐จ ๐จ (there are five lights in this message).
That was an excellent episode, too
Anyone else here at makerfaire right now?
@dense minnow are you a maker at the Faire? If so where
@nova plinth nope I'll just be wandering
@nova plinth pi zero w, camera, vufine, phat dac audio board and bone conduction transducer.
Hope it works out that we see each other tomorrow
Cool
Here is the wheelchair project I've been working on for tomorrow
Not much so far
Going to add LED foot supports so people don't hit my foot
Cool
I'll be posting meeting times to meet at the Digi-Key booth tomorrow
Hot
@muted fern Thanks!
@hot hound <@&354432507342618624> I'm going to use the Digi-Key booth as my home base. I'll probably stop by before noon but lets meet at noon as well to gather before the state of arduino talk at 1pm. We'll likely need to line up for it
On Sunday, I'll likely pick a time in the morning in addition to 3pm at Digi-Key before Tony's talk at 4pm.
Cool
Going to makerfaire in 20 minutes. 1 hour drive (staying in Long Island)
Hoping to get there by 8
Enjoy... it doesn't open until 10 ๐
Iโve got maker credentials ๐
Oh... I'm just a normal human!
Me too, and I am also leaving soon, but I have more than double the drive to make this morning
sigh And my step-sister's apartment is in walking distance. I coulda stayed with her and gotten up, stretched, wandered over to a street vendor for a bagel, and strolled down to the Maker Faire.
kicks himself for not going
Next year, we can all stay there!
All is a big number, @noble yacht ! ๐
I wonder how far in advance you should book hotels nearby, though.
Far enough
By the time my hotel was booked, we ended up staying pretty far because it was closer to the 7 train and easier/cheaper to get to and from maker faire even though the commute is longer
is not a fan of long commutes. Which is why he lives 310 meters from his office. ๐
@ttannewt - Got it. See you around noon!
Iโve arrived
In line at the entrance!
In the gate!
In line too!
Photo chain?
John Park's?
@noble yacht has to be. Dang I didn't know there was a giant circuit playground!
Old one thought... not express ๐
@noble yacht Haha yeah that is a classic, isn't it. Good eye.
@dusty minnow achievement unlocked! Lol
He said no Lady Ada until tomorrow and I won't be here... crying
Live streaming on YouTube now from "Make:", sponsored by DigiKey
Just FYI
Of course, as soon as I type that, they go on a pause until the top of the hour.
I am waiting on an SD card to transfer then off to the fair!
Headed to Digi-Key now then wandering the booths behind them. I have a white on
Cool
Achievement unlocked... 109 points
Omw to the hall now. If anyone wants to chat, I'm wearing a blue lantern t shirt
Folks, just a suggestion (stolen from Scott last weekend), if you want people to recognize you, post a selfie!
if you don't want people to recognize you, post a "selfie" of a random stranger and follow them to see all the confusing encounters they have
Yeah not in a place I can do that atm
Which? The R2 unit?
I'm the guy with the epic wheelchair
Hello world.
Make it to the fair! I am walking around behind the digikey both with an applied science t shirt and messenger bag on.
Grrr upload not working.
@verbal trench Quite definitely one of the more recognizable beards at the faire
Make: / Digikey booth making mention of Adafruit/CircuitPython
Look like that
Yay for networks at Maker Faire :)
Next achievement !
Meetup right now behind the digikey both! We will be heading over to the Aurdrino talk at some point...
Heading to Massimo talk!.. whole group !
What time does that start, @noble yacht ? Shows on the digikey live stream as 1PM Eastern
1pm
We are over in the main auditorium....here for the 1pm talk :)
Main talk? Iโll be there. - brentru on mobile heh
Pic related ๐
Hat is an arduino hat ๐
Which I guess wonโt be able to find in like 26min when everyone rolls in
Tony and I are outside the main auditorium
Errr. Center stage, as make calls it
@verbal trench where in the main auditorium are ya
Three rows back in the center @ripe sage
Oki. Thx.
Sorry, just saw the message - seems like you found us bru :)
I did!!
Ugh, I wish I was there!
@ripe crow digikey has live stream
arduino talk just started
watching it from make stream live
make live stream this
New Aurdrino board.
Ugh you beat me by a second ๐
The form factor looks... Familiar.
Not sure what a carrier board is
@finite sundial MKR1000 board is that what is shown
the wifi shield is same what in huzzah
I said sigfox board earlier
yeah. very familiar.
It even has LoRa?? Hmm
GSM module, gsm 1400
yeah
It's hard to see from the stream, but how close in form factor is that to a feather?
It looks to be less wide than the feathers
Not exactly but itโs similar. It has holes that arenโt at the edges.
@ripe crow search MKR1000 and you get a size as it wasnt full size but not much bigger thise 2 new ones
New compiler with cli tool.
Yeah, I looked at it
that was first MKR board from arduino
For those who can't be there in person: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYO1Coywb1U I didn't see anyone else post it here.
Canโt bring your meat suit to World Maker Faire New York? Then put your face parts in front of this here screen. Our show is gonna be chock full of art cars,...
Yup
That was interesting :)
Yes.
I got in the flow of the crowd....are we meeting up after the talk?
I dont mean to be rude, but i am.running over to make education for a talk on arduino water monitoring....at 145pm
@verbal trench we'll see you later. ๐
I'm sure we will....enjoy the show ya'll :)
Hey hey just tuning in. Ardunio board looks familiar indeed
Birds of a feather flock together....
@muted fern i watch it via maker live stream
Allie needs to be in Discord. ๐ She'd fit in well here.
making robots in discord
The cool thing about that girl is that she hasn't gotten that voice in her head yet that says "You can't do it that way", so she does. The blowgun idea may not be the perfect solution, but it's a really great idea, and can inspire a new mindset on how respiratory problems can be diagnosed and monitored in children.
It's so sad that we seem to lose at least a bit of that mindset as we get older and "know better"
Playing with Za toyz
Protip - looking for underused, clean restrooms? Go to the ones in the basement of the main hall, on one of the side hallways that jut out like a spoke on a wheel.
(For a maker thread, thats about the oddest protip i have ever given)
getting the post up now...
i'll run this down, more, later
Any events happening after the faire tonight?
@verbal trench 21+. Good location. Free drinks. 21+ tho.
Iโm going. Hopefully will see you there.
Heading out to my work conference in NH.. great meeting everyone. Crying for not being able to get Lady Ada to sign my first Adafruit kit...
I just met a gaggle of mandalorians :)
Make live feed was awesome sadly cut in the coca-cola zero and mentos
Day one was so much fun! Can't wait for day 2!
Hey
Will sell maker entry pass for $50 ๐
Only if you have made something in your life
@ripe sage hey, i am beat. I'm probably not coming to that meetup, heading home as we speak.
But thank you for the info
Ok. No problem! MakerFaire is tiring as heck
Especially since its at 8pm. I might be asleep by then :p
@upper ledge @nova plinth @dusty minnow @wanton shard @odd drum Will you be at maker faire tomorrow? I don't think I met you today.
Iโll be there yeha
Ok awesome!
I won't ๐ฆ
I plan on meeting folks at 3pm at Digi-Key. I've got lots to see tomorrow in the morning including John Park's presentation at 11:30am at the center stage.
DId you have a good time @odd drum ?
I had a blast, met some cool people and saw some really great projects.
Awesome! Sorry we didn't meet up
earning my media pass: https://blog.adafruit.com/2017/09/23/state-of-arduino/
@muted fern I'll be there tomorrow, will try to swing by at 3pm
great @wanton shard
@muted fern so...what did Banzi think of Discord?
@hidden linden said he'd take a look. Didn't show him much.
Headed to bed now to rest for day two of maker faire! Night all
G'night @muted fern!
@muted fern I will try to be there but it is hard to get around on grass in my wheelchair. Already had to get the frame welded again beacouse a wheel snapped off. I should be around for a bit though
@muted fern Earning your media pass? Nice writeup, Superm....ahem...Clark Kent ๐
@everyone Please read my post in #circuitpython-dev I have been celebrating WorldMakerFaire the only way I could.
So yeah, I set an alarm to be up in time for the live stream of the Maker Faire! #HopelessGeek
@nova plinth if you do make it let me know and I'll try to find you if I'm free.
Did anyone check out Allie Weber yesterday? Thinking of taking my 8 yr old but wondering if her talk will be too technical/advanced. https://makerfaire.com/maker/entry/63772/
Allie Weber Kid Inventor aka "Robot Maker Girl" is the inspiration behind the Robot Girl Lottie Doll. Allie is a Maker, Builder, and Inventor. Allie was the winner of the 2016 Global Spark Lab Invent-It Challenge, and is also the Student Ambassador for the 2017 Spark Lab Invent-it Challenge. Allie weber has gotten additional press coverage for multiple inventions she has developed. Tech-nic-Allie Speaking is her YouTube Channel devoted to tech-toy reviews, and to show other kids her inventions to inspire them to build make and create.
@fair void saw the live stream, she was awesome
some of the projects were not technical. like a playing card holder for use in car.
i'd recommend going
Oh ok, great. Thanks.
@fair void she is awesome and your 8yr old can ask questions also
Nice - I am sure he will have tons
yesterday there was young child who asked a question from alllie
I'll be at @fallow basin 's talk at 11:30 at the center stage.
@muted fern me too. I'm already there for the talk before it in the third row

John Park's presentation should be up right now
are you ready for John park
Stream chat says it will start late
Here we go!
John Park has mad presentation skills
When hot glue works, there is no shame.
Was at the faire for the first time yesterday.. fun time.. i would pay extra for an adult only day though...
John Park was good
@fallow basin Great job, John! I didn't catch the URL for your web site, though. Could you re-post it here?
@digital relic he posted jpixl.net, which is a shortcut to his Wordpress site - https://jedgarpark.wordpress.com
Allie is next in make stream

At least I can watch remotely!!! ๐
@timid pollen in make booth

I am not the only yankee who says "bob's your uncle", that's good to know
Also, in special situations, "Sally's your aunt"
ladyada was great there make with python
@muted fern it was great to meet you and I'm glad you got to try out the PiGlass picture program
Coca-Cola and menthos guys are in a row
@dense minnow does your piglass survive from that shower
I tend to avoid showers but I did get caught out in the rain with it once and it was ok for the 10 min it took me to get inside
Impulse buy :) my first 3d printer :)
@finite sundial SEM suggestion / request: mentos candy shell
@tender wagon @ tannewt and I talked about that yesterday during the Coke and Mentos show. I have to get some more sample prep stuff, but when I can...
make stream got problems each day during that show
Any post-Maker Faire meetups I should be aware of going on tonight?
@finite sundial Sorry, just saw this. I didn't hear of any. I figured many would be beat & heading home.
Also, FYI....hauling a 3D printer from Queens to NJ is more challenging than it looks. ๐ The problems one encounters when saving on shipping...
@dense minnow GOod to meet you too! Thanks for letting me try it on!
@muted fern Arduino posted pictures today from Maker Faire including one of you talking to Massimo Banzi after the state of Arduino
@muted fern
Any of you check out the Physics Bus? I found it to be very interesting
The physics bus was really cool!
I wish I could have gone inside... oh well
@nova plinth they had very similar stuff outside the bus as they did inside. If you saw the stuff outside, you have the right idea of what is inside the bus
k
You think anything should be different about the bus? @rotund relic @nova plinth
It's a really cool bus, I'm just not sure how much explaining of the science behind stuff happens, vs just playing with it
Will there be a Maker Faire in Malaysia?
Check the website
Are there makerfairs in Seattle?
@feral grove http://seattle.makerfaire.com/ You might want to ask @fading frost if you have any questions since she participated on a panel event there.
any plans to release CPX with bluetooth or wifi? ๐
Will adafruit be at the turin maker faire?
no, we don't go to maker faires besides the local ones. and even then just as individuals. we engage our audience through the internet ๐
๐ฐ
What
I also can't wait ๐
Early Bird Tickets are on sale for World Maker Faire 2018 in NYC
Also of note is the Call for Makers, please apply and show us all the amazing things you have been making!
Indeed! You think Adafruit's show & tell is awesome? Well, it is. But this takes a show & tell to a world-wide stage ๐
[which, technically Adafruit's S&T does the same....but you know what I mean! ๐ ]
Putting a few tips here for NYC MakerFaire later this fall (some of this is echoed from the MakerFaire website):
-
NYC is not car friendly. Consider taking mass transit, it'll reduce the commute stress. Otherwise, be prepared for traffic, expensive tolls, and expensive parking.
-
The only NYC subway train to take you to the Faire is the 7 train.
-
If you're approaching from NJ and wish to commute via NJTransit to Manhattan, a relatively close park & ride is the Lyndhurst station. It is 3x stops outside of NYC (with a transfer in Secaucus Junction). The Lyndhurst Park & Ride is spacious & free -- unlike the Secaucus Park & Ride, which is very expensive and fills up quickly (even on weekends).
-
If taking NJT, please...please....please familiarize yourself with the train schedules. Being a weekend, some trains run every other hour. And departures from NYC can be somewhat limiting.
-
Here's a backup plan in case you get stuck at Secaucus waiting for a train. A ride-share from Secaucus Junction to Lyndhurst is $8-15. In comparison, a ride-share from 34th Penn Station to Lyndhurst typically runs $40-50.
-
Bring a water bottle. There are several fountains in the buildings you can refill your bottle.
-
Food: Please be aware that MakerFaire has a rule of bringing in no outside food. However, in the past, I may have brought in small snacks and even a sandwich to avoid the high costs onsite. Please, if you do this, be discrete and respectful. :-)
-
Dress for the weather: much of the faire is outdoors. Rain or shine. Good footwear is recommended.
.oO(Why would I refill a fountain from my water bottle?)
....sigh. Thanks @wanton shard, fixed it. ๐
Just kidding @verbal trench -- too good to pass up.
Oh I know ๐ s'all good.
The V.A. in West Haven has a special drinking fountain specifically designed to refill water bottles (or let a person just drink, as usual).
I'm seeing them more and more, especially in new or recently renovated office spaces.
The ones at the NY Science Center....eh, not so much. But you take what you can get. Sure beats spending $2-5 for a bottle.
One year, the organizers had water bottle refill stations throughout the Faire. It was really nice, too bad they didn't do it again.
hi all! i am on the hunt for east coast makers with cool stuff to talk about on stages at maker faire. please feel free to DM me recommendations on cool makers you have come across that are willing or able to be at World Maker Faire.
i will also pass that recommendation along to the production team @verbal trench
@hidden sparrow Thanks ๐ Those "hydration stations" really were a nice touch.
@verbal trench I'd like to append a few things onto that:
they don't "allow" food but I have successfully brought a muffin in my bag each year (dont bring something that spoils), if you don't own a water bottle there are plenty of bodegas near WMF which have HUGE 32OZ bottles of water, wear your most comfy sneakerz not your favorite loafers, put a jacket in your backpack... oh did I mention to bring a backpack? yeah, do that too
if you want to grab food with adafruit peeps, we had some meetups led by tannewt so check this channel. I'l be around this year, too (whooo WMF)
Ooo yes, all very excellent points
just got my tix for one day at the Faire and the MAKE magazine subscription. Early bird deal goes away at end of month.
Don't know about bringing food in if attending, but I've brought food in as a Maker with a table and never had problems.
Hoping to see everyone at the NY maker faire! Got my tickets today for Saturday. I'll keep an eye for any posted meet ups
@muted fern hope to run into you at maker faire this year
@wanton shard I'd like to buy a vowel, please. You have a question?
It's an artifact of the text-only client I use in Discord -- can't take back utterances.
(You can but the function appears to be broken)
@vague cipher I just deleted them (was a 'd' on a line by itself, for 'delete' and then a question mark on a line by itself)
zero-sum game as I've just described them using more space than it took to utter them hi hi
@sterile cipher I haven't decided if I'm going or not
I can report that I will be attending with some cool projects!
@spice spruce c ya there!
See you
Also I am going to guess there is a unofficial (or official) meetup at some point
Absolutely! there was a discord one last year. Also there's a HackADay NYC meetup the night before the fair as well.
If memory serves me right, the HackADay one was at a local watering hole -- so 21+, no younglings.
That may change this year, as I haven't heard any information yet.
Ah well
Iโll be walking around the fair with a collared shirt with my logo on the back
@spice spruce You need to make that a light-up logo to stand out from other makers walking around the fair in a collared shirt with a logo on the back. Weren't you going to display there?
EL wire outline?
Iโll be there this year ๐ธ
Barring anything catastrophic, I fully intend on being there.
<@&453561466486915072> will you have a booth at maker faire nyc again?
Yes we will!!
ok awesome @leaden thicket ! I'm sorting out my plans in the next week or so
Hope to see you both there!
Posted this in the general forum but was pointed here as it's more NYC specific. I just moved to Brooklyn and now have no workshop space in my tiny apartment. Does anyone know of any good maker spaces in Manhattan or Brooklyn that are relatively affordable?
Shhh. If you missed MakerFaire Early Bird tickets, Hackaday has a discount code still available (as of this posting) for 20% off tickets. Which is the same price as the Early Bird promo.
So have we sort of nailed down a location and time for the meetup or are we still looking?
Location will be the <@&453561466486915072> booth hopefully but we haven't picked a time. Any constraints for you @spice spruce ?
@muted fern after mikeb's talk on sunday could be a good sunday time?
I'm travelling with some other people, so I don't know what my schedule will be like.
On Sunday from 12 to 1 I am going to William osmanโs talk
@misty crane JUST saw your post about brooklyn makerspaces
ok so theres NYCResistor (membership through an invitation) which is O.G. hackerspace, HackManhattan, FatCatFabLab, NYU Tandon (if you're an alumni) has a nice one, and a few not hacker-specific but art-specific
@wispy cove thanks so much! Actually went to NYCResistor craft night a couple weeks ago and met some great folks. Also toured the Staten Island Makerspace and theyโre doing some supppperr cool stuff down there. They have their own Maker Park across the street with all these insane sculptures and industrial art pieces.
@misty crane wow! I didn't even know SI had a makerspace...

Dang, the BringAHack is in flushing on friday. Wont be able to make it out to that. It's a good location though if you're in town for the faire!
<@&453561466486915072> would it work to have discord folks meet at the digikey booth both days at 11am?
So I am planning out my grand day out at Ye Olde Maker Faire and posting this travel advisory: Driving to the Faire? Fuggedaboudit. Parking for the car is $40 on Sat $25 on Sun and will need to take the free Yellow School Bus shuttle as it is a hike from the lot to the Faire. Local streets in the area are congested so Ubering it would also be questionable. Note that there is subway work this weekend that affects the train from Manhattan to skip the 111th St stop and will you have to go further to the next stops, crossover and catch the train coming back in the opposite direction to get to the proper station. I don't know if you can get off at the next stop and kinda find the parking lot shuttle to get to the Faire. It's always an adventure in getting around the city. Good luck all.
Thanks for the heads up @vague cipher. You can get off at the Mets-Willets Point stop (next one) and catch the train back for the 111th street stop.
Whole reasoning is that during the work week, the 7 train runs local or express depending on the direction & time of the day. There are certain stops on the 7 line that service both local & express, and they are your U-turn points :)
Weekends they -love- to perform maintenance, shutting down a section of the track between express stops typically, leaving local stations available in one direction only.
Weekdays they don't perform at all...
So true.
I always like to say, never be in a rush traveling in NYC. Plan on random delays, shutdowns, etc. One year, the 7 line lost power entirely. I hoofed it over 2 miles to get to the MakerFaire -- got there around 1130am. Half of the booths weren't staffed for the same reason.
Here's a fun observation: NYer's, well, greater metro area denizens express travel time in hours. Yeah, it'll take an hour to get uptown, it'll take two hours to get to Queens... Ask anyone else not from here and they will ask what the mileage is.
For work, we have out of town resource coordinators, who say "it's only a 5 mile difference between sites, that's no issue".
Um. You might as well be coordinating a cross-country move at that point. 5 miles across NYC can take hours with a moving truck.
Anywho. Lesson here -- be flexible ๐
@muted fern 11:00 both days shouldnโt be a problem! See everyone in a couple of days!!!
@vague cipher Good tip!
also for those who are new to the huge NYC transit system - the MTA released a new app called MyMTA this year. It provides real-time updates and all the subway stations have WiFi now
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=info.mta.mymta&hl=en_US < android, there's also iOS
If you're planning on taking the subway, you should install that app, it'll make your headache lessen
@wispy cove that is indeed a pretty nice app. It is simple yet very functional.
I am a bit concerned. Every time the MTA does something right....karmic justice states something else must go disastrously awry.
I should be there both days, in some capacity ๐ [as the day goes on, my energy levels will quickly deplete]
I'm both excited and a bit sad. Excited that this will be the first year I have a booth and sad that I won't be able to go around and see all the cool projects.
Question to those who have been to both the NYMF and the San Mateo MF: I'm sure it's tricky to compare them, but on the basis of simple size and number of exhibitors, how do the two compare? I've been to San Mateo a couple times but never to the NY one, and I'm still debating coming down from NH to the NY one this year.
I haven't been to the San Mateo MF but I know in terms of numbers it's a little bit bigger than the NYC one. I think last year Bay Area had 100,000 people and NYC had 90,000
I've only gone to NY MF because it is local for me but talking to people that have gone and showed at West Coast Maker Faires, there is more of a Burning Man vibe going on out there. It's not as congested and "brusque" as NY. You don't get the bigger art pieces you might see out there.
<@&354432507342618624> Hi folks, we're on for meeting at Digikey's booth at 11am both days
Will there be an appearance of the royal couple, wait, @shell horizon and Mr. @shell horizon ?
ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
any ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ shall further be links to refer to @fallow basin Magic 9 Ball project.
we need some gifs of it
See some of you tomorrow!!!!
Hope you all have a great time! #JealousNonAttendee ๐
<@&354432507342618624> weโre in front of Digi-Key!
We are! It's twoo!
We are moving into the shade.... we are next to the makerfairw bookstore
Today was an awesome day at MakerFaire NYC! I hope everyone who attended had an awesome time.
We will be meeting again tomorrow at the Digi-Key booth at 11am -- and if we scramble for shade again, we'll let ya'll know here! ๐
@verbal trench whatโs the bbq place in Long Island city? Iโm thinking we should go there for dinner
phew, wiped from the faire and post-party yesterday. Enjoyed meeting everyone!
Thanks @vague cipher for the button, it's proudly on the front of my work bag ๐
It was great to meet everyone at Maker Faire! My stats even though I sat through a lot of good talks.
yep, about the same ๐
@vague cipher and @wispy cove -- what hardware/software are you using to collect this data?
@verbal trench It's the Health app on the iphone which has auto big brother/sister tracking.
woah. I have an iphone 8, and never opened the app.
it has been collecting info on me since day 1.
I think my stats today are measured in thousandths of a mile.
I never knew this existed. I'm intrigued and slightly bothered by it.
Such a weird mixture of emotions.
I have it connected to my watch, accuracy may be increased but I don't know.
I can't speak to the accuracy, but the trends do match what I have been doing.
hmmm, double pendulum chaotic system with both watch and phone sensors
Regardless, we've all been very busy the last few days.
Explains why I feel so tuckered out tonight.
Was I the only one who wanted to see what the Hand of Man would have done to the (considerably more expensive and less fun) Lexus UX?
Didn't really notice what kinds of car wrecks they had lined up but it would have made a fine demo piece for using the jaws of life to extract a crash test dummy inside.
Hey, all, it was so awesome to meet everyone, and thanks so much for your help installing the Witch Lights on Sunday!
Next year I'm not crashing the party; carrying these things around in heels is no joke
Maker Faire was so awesome and I had a great time meeting all the adafruit folk.
Likewise, it was awesome meeting all of you (some for the first time, and for others it was a very pleasant reunion).
That was fun, and good to match actual people with screen names.
Always nice to put a name to a name ๐
@shut valve It was great to meet you! Thanks for bringing the Witch Lights, it was really cool to see!
@past knot It was my pleasure, thanks for checking them out!
hey yall! it was so awesome meeting everyone in person! the daily Adafruit meetups made me so happy, thanks @muted fern and @past knot for organizing ๐ so nice to see everyone who made it, and special thanks @vague cipher for the awesome pins, we love them!!!
@vague cipher Those were some pretty awesome pins!
hi @verbal trench !
I enjoyed lovely chats with several of you!
@vague cipher You said you got your button maker off ebay? Was it one of those red-handled ones?
note to self: do not leave computer on and go work on paper mache project.
@verbal trench The button maker is one of those generic red ones (i got the 2 1/4 inch 58mm button) came with parts for 500 buttons and actually solidly built to include the dies....so about 480 some odd more buttons to make? I haven't found a good "inexpensive" 2.5 in circle punch press to cut out the images. Cost was about $130? Will probably lend it out to whoever needs it for fundraisers - club cheer stuff.
@fading frost Enjoyed the talk at MF. I did Industrial Design in high school but took Mechanical Engineering in college thinking to round out my design skills. But yeah, it goes back to basics in researching things, getting all the ideas sorted out and coming up with a game plan to solve any problem or make.
@shut valve Sorry I missed the WitchLights - I was only there on Saturday. I did check out the website, pretty cool display. See if you can get a hold of military surplus camouflage nets. They would make a great substrate to apply neopixel strips or strands and deploy it in the field. Was there a firefly effect?
Thanks @vague cipher Thatโs cool! I did not discover design until college. Itโs super helpful to me to just have a strategy for getting through projects, otherwise I wouldnโt finish anything ๐
I guess I am more a proponent of STEAM to include art as part of STEM. Wasn't the object of the game to start as many projects as possible and at the same time - where did the finish part come in?
I wonder if you could use a laser cutter to cut the circles.
Hmm, I'd suggest a Cricut (the paper cutter) would be a better tool -- I don't know for sure, but I don't think laser + paper = happy results ๐ฅ
Too many products with a Cricket-styled name....
Going to MF is like attending a red carpet event. @next anvil was there, @verbal trench was there, and many Adafruit peeps... pleasure to meet them all. To make pins/buttons all you need to do is to cut out a nice neat circle shape of the printed image to fit in the press. Just a pair of scissors work well if you have guidelines to cut. The usual $20-30 craft paper punchers have die cutters with loose tolerances and end up tearing part of the edge. They obstruct your view of trying to line up where to cut and using the lever action of the press is clumsy at times. Using those rotary cutters that pivot on the center pin is awkward. Using a cricut/silhouette/cookie cutter or other machinery is really overengineering the task. But a circle punch press professional model at 10x the cost is the best solution.
@vague cipher thanks!
There isn't a firefly effect currently; I have code to make firefly lights, but in testing it actually looks better with amber LEDs than NeoPixels because of the PWM fade/sparkle effect of the NeoPixels.
@fading frost It was so great to meet you too! I'm glad you enjoyed the meetups. We had a ton of fun too!
@fading frost So I wanted to show you this; I loved your presentation at WMFNY, and afterwards found a page of my design sketchbook I'd lost: https://i2nk.co/notes/2018/10/1/sketchbook-page-witch-lights-harness
If you go to http://witchlights.com and scroll down, I outlined the design sketching and development process, which is interesting to designers mainly, so maybe you'll like it? ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
My goal for the Witch Lights was to create real magic. To enchant the forest at night, and guide people safely through the woods. The Witch Lights are installed along a dark, winding path through the woods. As you walk down the path at night,ย a bright faerie light goes zipp...
@shut valve Awesome! thank you for sharing that, Jazz, I love how your sketch shows the scale and detail of your build - especially having seen the Witch Lights at the Faire! ๐๐๐
Thank you!! Im so glad you saw them at the Faire, wasnโt certain if you did and didnโt want to be a pest
so disappointed I didn't make it to WMF. Just had too much going on ๐ฆ
@stray crown There's always next year? I was lucky enough to fit in one day only.
So to add to my bucket list : Burning Man and Bay Area Maker Faire.
@vague cipher yeah, but next year is so far away... guess it gives me something to look forward to.
I'll be there for bay area makerfaire,
and I am planning to attend next NY makerfaire/ world maker faire
is maker faire still happening?
I think nobody knows including Make at this point.
I suspect several faires will run anyway, but I agree with Melissa, they're likely still figuring things out.
I bought a ticket to World Maker Faire New York back in April. I hope it won't be cancelled.
I noticed a post from the Maker Faire fb account today ๐ค
@hidden sparrow any mention of NYC?
Considering there hasn't been a call for makers and NYC doesnt show up in their list of featured faires https://makerfaire.com/featured-faires/
I am not very hopeful
nyc is most definitely off. NY Sci posted a couple weeks ago about the cancellation.
We are announcing the cancellation of World Maker Faire 2019, which had been scheduled to occur at NYSCI on September 21-22.
@hidden sparrow thanks for sharing that link - i had been wondering if it was on/off
Maker Faire Milwaukee is still on for Sept 14 & 15, 2019. (And attendance is free!)
will there be once a world fair in the Netherlands? We are very open and enthusiasts about all DiY stuff. Myself is using a lot of CPX and Crickit in C++ todo stuff for schools and i do enviroment projacts too. All online shops here have only some parts from adafruit and that is real dissapointing. But we also don't pay much or better nearly nothing with credit cards. Only the local one named iDeal. So girls and guys from Adafruit, get we once a fair from you ?
@wraith nimbus i'm in the near of Utrecht. So Amsterdam is around 1 1/2 hour with a car when we have less traffic, otherwise it would be 2..3 hours, hehe.
