Oh, I didn't know that Ladyada is the founder of here! I only knew her as the frontman frontgirl of Circuit playground...
I guess the name Adafruit makes sense then, because it's the fruit of Ada's ideasšŸ˜„

I believe the technical term for someone like LadyAda is "the best"

I will agree to that. The website is crazy good too.

delicate stream
#

Everything about Adafruit is 11/10

steady dove
#

Well shipping is expensive. Otherwise yea.

delicate stream
#

They do offer free shipping for large orders, which I try to take advantage of... Bigger orders less often. But the shipping isn't something they can really control

steady dove
#

Yeah. I don’t know how shipping works, it’s just pricey there. I try to wait to have a bunch of things on my list before I order.

delicate stream
#

Shipping companies have a whole bunch of math on sizes and weights and speeds -- and for Adafruit to offer free shipping, the profit of the products needs to exceed the cost of the shipping by some margin

steady dove
#

I did have to emergency order some specific leds I forgot to order. That was painful. Shipping I think was twice the cost of the product. Lol.

delicate stream
#

Oof... yeah, even the cheapest shipping isn't super cheap. But I usually do USPS

steady dove

Yep. USPS ftw

I'll tell you what happened last year to me...
That time I only had the two V1s... We had computer science in school and I was way forward than classmates, so I was bringing them to school every lesson, and programming, while my teacher was explaining Word, Excel and PowerPoint according to her plan... Until one day she had nothing planned...
That moment I took the opportunity and introduced everyone to my microbits... I showed them the "anatomy" of one, and taught the class to make simple programs, like light on, wait a minute, light off, or mapping movement... When the lesson was ending, the teacher asked me for where I got them, and I gave her the link...
Next class I noticed she bought a whole bunch of microbits to play withšŸ˜†

delicate stream
steady dove

Ok so the next question I have for the experts, what defines anime?

tardy badger
#

One thing I hope takes off in the coming years is AR movies

#

Movies that are enhanced by AR

steady dove
tardy badger
#

Nah, more like helping bring physical depth to films

#

Or perceived depth

steady dove
#

Ah. Still, either is cool.

#

How would you envision that being different than 3d or 4d theatres?

tardy badger
#

Well, theoretically it wouldn’t require anything more than a good stock of headsets and a more robust network to deliver the AR content

#

If you wanted to be super detailed, you could tie it to Bluetooth in the seat so you get a viewer specific angle of the environment

steady dove
#

Do you ever wonder if in a decade or two we will live nearly entirely in a virtual world? The real world becoming increasingly irrelevant.

tardy badger
#

Eh, the VR world still is insufferable

#

It just shows you how incredible the real world is

spice moss
#

one of the ar things

delicate stream
#

I wish I had depth perception to enjoy 3D movies

thick wind
# steady dove Ok so the next question I have for the experts, what defines anime?

Anime is a style that originates from Japanese animation. Though some may disagree on where the line is drawn, there isn’t a really clear demarcation between ā€œtrue animeā€ and ā€œanime-like,ā€ though one could make an argument for anime being specific to those of Japanese origin.
RWBY is one such borderline case, where the art style is inspired by Japanese animations, but every part of it is made by Americans.

delicate stream
#

I would say ā€œtrue animeā€ is Japanese in origin, and if it’s styled like traditional anime, it’s (origin country) anime

thick wind
#

I should probably have used ā€œtraditional animeā€ over ā€œtrue anime,ā€ as I think of traditional vs modern by how it’s made rather than its country of origin.

late fulcrum
#

Sometimes I'll tease people by referring to "animated manga"

delicate stream
thick wind
#

In a tangentially related thought, I should also recommend all of the movies by studio ghibli. Each and every one is a hand-drawn masterpiece…

tardy badger
#

At least you gained another form of it

#

Cultural

#

The best kind really

delicate stream
#

Mhmm, my brain does magic maths on size comparison to calculate distances

#

Also I shift a little left or right to get more parallax data

#

But if I’m sitting still, I can’t tell the difference between 3D and 2D XD

tardy badger
#

What if the AR visual experience gave you a scale in the bottom corner

delicate stream
#

That’d be useful

#

Something in real units instead of my internal brain units XD

tardy badger
#

ā€œObject 10 brain units awayā€

#

ā€œSwitching to American unitsā€
ā€œCalculatingā€¦ā€
ā€œObject is three school buses awayā€

delicate stream
#

Something like that XD

tardy badger
#

I never thought comparing the size of something to another relevant thing was bad until I saw all the memes of other countries making fun of Americas for doing that.

#

But that skill is a huge part of understanding. Size correlation is easier for known objects than arbitrary measurements

#

It can be hard to visualize something that is say, 8ā€x6ā€x4ā€ but if I told you it was lunchbox sized, you could probably imagine how big it was.

delicate stream
#

Mhmm. Most of my estimations are based on my own height; being close enough to 6’ (6’1ā€) it makes it not too hard to mental math sizes

late fulcrum
#

The classic question once was "is it bigger than a breadbox", but these days, not very many people use breadboxes

delicate stream
#

But where do they keep their bread

tardy badger
#

The fridge I guess

delicate stream
#

Why would you put bread in the fridge???

tardy badger

tardy badger
#

Ohh interesting

delicate stream
#

… I just realized our breadbox isn’t used ā€œproperlyā€because it’s just full of bread in the packages

tardy badger
#

I wonder why people fridge their bread

delicate stream
#

Because they don’t know the above linked things

#

And the logic ā€œfridge makes things last longerā€ is default

tardy badger
#

Martha Stewart said if you wrap the bread up tightly that the fridge will help slow staling

delicate stream
#

Maybe also people not understanding and spreading things john_think

#

Someone is probably wrong

tardy badger
#

But someone is definitely making money

#

And it ain’t me

delicate stream
#

The bread people

#

No matter what, they win…

tardy badger
#

They don’t disagree that refrigerating can cause it to stale and dry, so they offer a way to store it in the fridge to avoid that. Something I doubt most ā€œbread in the fridgeā€ people are doing.

crystal ore
#

Down with the bread people! I want lower-calorie stuff to make sandwiches from. Like... weave me a fluffy flat fiber thing out of indigestible carrot skins.

delicate stream
#

But I like bread

umbral phoenix
#

typical household forms of plastic aren't a barrier to air though... use foil if you want an air barrier

tardy badger
#

Foil is great unless you’re wrapping up tomatoes or other acidic foods that react with it

umbral phoenix
#

true

#

I keep in-use bread in the cabinet, medium-term inventory in the freezer in the original packaging, and longer-term bread goes in foil in the freezer. Foil is highly recyclable too, and potentially reusable.

delicate stream
#

Wait, the bag bread comes in isn’t an air barrier???

umbral phoenix
#

nope

umbral phoenix
#

it reduces air, but doesn't block it

delicate stream
#

How does air go in and out???

#

If I squeeze it it holds pressure!

#

Vs foil which can’t seal pressure

umbral phoenix
#

slowly

delicate stream
#

But how does foil block better??

umbral phoenix
#

it has no holes (or very few tiny ones)

delicate stream
#

But it can’t hold pressure at the seams… air can move in and out

#

The plastic bag doesn’t have holes (aside from the opening that gets sealed)

soft hound
#

i can see how it could work, soda/food cans are made of metal and they just have really tight folds to keep out not just air, but also hold in tons of pressure

delicate stream
#

Cans are a whole different ball game than foil, those I understand

soft hound
#

i picture the foil being used like a pouch and sealing the three open sides in the same folding-edge way that cans are sealed, it wouldn't be able to handle pressure but i could see how it could seal the things inside it from outside air

delicate stream
#

And I guess for gas permeability foil would win, but unless it’s sealed up tight (which can be impossible to do) it isn’t really air tight

umbral phoenix
#

if you wrap in foil, and roll the ends well, there's no pressure difference, and you have effectively sealed the contents

delicate stream

Wrapping a whole loaf of bread would be hard

it's degrees rather than all or nothing

nD can always be mapped to many planes chaos

acoustic pawn
#

4th dimension can just be imagined as time I guess, 5th is another time perpendicular to 4th, and 6th is another time dimension. So you have 3D time. Then you can go to other dimensions by putting that time space (with 3d space in it) into another time-like space I guess. Makes sense, but rotation is hard thinking about it that way.

azure grove
delicate stream
#

You can have multiple temporal dimensions too

acoustic pawn
#

It’s just a way to think about it. You move through the 4th dimension like you move through time, and a 3d object changes as you move through it. Since our brains are used to time, it starts to make sense as an analogy

delicate stream
#

4D space != 3D space with time

#

4D space still has a temporal component that’s different than that 4th spatial dimension

acoustic pawn
#

Yes

tardy badger
#

I think they’re saying movement of 3D objects through 4D spaces in linear

acoustic pawn
#

Maybe my analogy is wrong, but it seems to make sense

tardy badger
#

I mean, yes in a way it’s correct. The only difference is you still get directionality and movement magnitudes are not observer specific

#

It’s fun to think about the fact that our lives, our existence is but a shadow of the fourth dimension

#

Could it be our own consciousness is derived from a higher plane??

#

Lol

delicate stream
#

Human consciousness exists on dimensional planes 7 and 1846 with reference to temporal planes 1, 5, 17, and 1681

Olive oil for the bowl afterwards.

Proof yeast with water, sugar, oil for 5 minutes (nice and frothy). Start mixing with dough hook and add salt. Slowly add flour until the dough is well combine, is tacky but not sticky, move to oiled bowl and proof for at least 30 minutes. Bake 450F (230C) for up to 12 minutes

Well, I've wrapped colored stranded wire (had a bunch on hand) around both ends. So yellow goes to yellow, etc. Sure made my mess of a work area at the PC easier to find the right cables ends...

Colored electrical tape works well too. Or labels on one end

BigClive blowing up his desk with some of the dangerous products from China I talked about earlier... notably, fake products tend to be the dangerous ones https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENFxBLoQjIM

This video left me "shaken but not stirred" in a good adrenaline rush type of way.

Two more completely fake products being sold via eBay and circumventing formal safety test channels. Not just fake though, but stupidly and very dangerously fake. They could have made a safe fake product, but instead chose to make one that can injure and cause ...

Wow

delicate stream
#

Yeah... Scam products are terrifying

#

Well, some of them. Some scam products are safe -- like "fuel savers" that are basically just an LED, resistor, and some capacitors, and just... capacitate? And glow? Don't do anything harmful

Playing with ChatGPT-3 again; here's a good example of it just not getting things. Asked it to write code to give a random 256 character string; it gives me a few lines of code. Try it, get an error, tell it the error, it proposes a fix, but the code is exactly the same

#

Tell it to try again and it gives me the same code a 3rd time, lol

Hmmmmm

honest jolt
#

No clue why there would be a circular import error on a standard library lol

delicate stream
#

I just tried it like you did, I get the error on import, maybe a Python config thing?

#

Or maybe my slightly older Python lacks that attribute?

honest jolt
#

No clue, never heard of Python needing configuration

honest jolt
delicate stream
#

First I need to figure out why Google is blocked on my main workstation XD

honest jolt
#

bruh lmao

delicate stream
#

... actually it's working now, lol

honest jolt
#

Windows is very weird

delicate stream
#

Indeed

#

"New in version 3.6"

honest jolt
#

Maybe a reinstall/update will work, but that's annoying

delicate stream
#

... wait, I had just tried doing the import secrets but it ran the random.py?

honest jolt
#

Try running python interpreter outside of Documents/

#

if you do import random files in the cwd take priority then the syspath, stdlibs, etc.

#

so if you have random.py in your cwd

#

lol

delicate stream
#

weird

#

Yeah, that worked, lol. [ignore forgetting it wasn't BASIC for a second]

honest jolt
#

Lol. It trips me up occasionally

delicate stream
#

Getting old makes it more common XD

delicate stream

Brain reverting like 25 years

honest jolt
#

To compensate, time travel 25 years into the future before that moment happens

delicate stream
#

Then it'll be a 50 year reversion, lol

honest jolt
#

Then time travel 25 years into the past so your brain is in the correct moment

#

lol

delicate stream
#

There we go XD

#

Got it to make a gradient script :D

honest jolt
#

noice

#

huh Discord doesn't render BMPs

#

lol

delicate stream
#

Apparently not XD

#

Asked it to make a script to make an image of an apple...

honest jolt

Lol

A single triangle as a leaf

delicate stream

Asked for a realistic apple, it's writing

honest jolt

late fulcrum
delicate stream

Ok, now it gave me error code; I told it to fix the error, and it described why that type of error might happen, with an example, but derped

#

I think they changed something -- I explicitly asked it to fix the code it gave me, and it did. Then got a new error, asked it generally to fix that error, and it gave me an unrelated example again. But explicitly saying "fix X code" that it was working on before it'll do it

#

HAHA

#

OK THIS IS HILARIOUS

IT GAVE ME CODE TO MAKE THE APPLE "REALISTIC"

honest jolt

It heard me šŸ‘€

yum Windows just changed the serial port for my Arduino again

After having to do some work to get Blender and Python to talk, I got it to make a sphere... but there are errors. Too sleepy, will try more tomorrow

I2C and SPI buses can also be shared to some extent. I don’t think speakers generally use either, though.

#

IR transmitters and receivers can often be implemented with a single GPIO pin, as well.

the cyberdeck discord is having some contests where we're giving away a raspi4 4gb and a few other really cool prizes
is there a channel where I can drop a link to the contests?

it's a discord link

but to another server. not sure how you all feel about that

If it’s a discord link, it won’t let you post and you’ll want to ask in #help-with-community to see if the moderators believe it’s worthwhile.

sterile walrus

awesome ty!

tardy badger

Yup!

delicate stream
#

Hmm… downloading the same update at the same time in the same place, but wildly different download times…

delicate stream
#

Faster time is an 8, slower is an SE

tardy badger
#

I think the SE has a less capable modem is why

delicate stream
#

The SE is 5G

#

It’s basically the 13 in the frame of an 8

thick wind
#

It is easy to forget that the 8 used to be a flagship phone at one point.

delicate stream
#

Now it’s my antique XD

thick wind
#

The SE is nowhere near the performance point of a 13, though.

#

Which SE?

delicate stream
#

The newest one

thick wind
#

Oh there is a third gen

delicate stream
#

They’re very close

thick wind
#

The only aspect of the old 8 that should be superior to the latest gen SE should be the storage?

#

It might have to do with how full of files your SE is compared to the 8; if there are already a significant number of files and applications, the SE might be doing some rearrangement of physical storage to download your update haha

#

iPhone 8 iirc has more storage so it likely doesn’t need to do as much reallocation work to fit your download.

tardy badger
#

It’s interesting that we’ve not figured out a way to easily automate storage defragmentation without significant cost to write cycles

delicate stream
#

The only thing the 8 has to compare to the SE is display and Bluetooth — everything else is better on the SE. the SE has less junk on it, and the 8 has more apps. Both 64GB

#

SE has a faster modem, faster processor, faster storage…

thick wind
#

Weird. Maybe the SE hit a weird snafu that borked the download estimate haha

delicate stream
#

It’s already rebooting and updating while the SE keeps downloading, lol

#

BRB gonna let my main phone update

#

Hmm… the 8 suddenly went from 50 to 47% battery within like 30 seconds after restarting…

#

And has now recharged to 56% in 3 minutes

#

I have a feeling the ā€œ85% healthā€ the phone reports may be inaccurate…

#

Also, phone, I typed ā€œinaccurateā€, why did you try to correct to ā€œin accurateā€

#

The 8 is showing signs that the battery is failing, so I’m debating what to do… bleh

tardy badger
#

Replace it?

delicate stream
#

Debating if I want to replace the battery, or try to sell/trade it

#

I have my Pixel 6 Pro in my bag that hasn’t been used at all since the 13 Pro Max took over…

tardy badger
#

14 Pro is really nice

frigid tiger
#

I have an SE2 which I'll run until phones become obsolete

late fulcrum
#

I don't like the keyboard on the 14 Pro

delicate stream
#

If I do replace the 8 with another iPhone, it’ll probably be whatever the cheapest current one is; it’s a secondary device, and the 13 Pro Max has been fine for my main. I don’t want to make it secondary right now

delicate stream
late fulcrum
#

No, it's the same...

delicate stream
late fulcrum
#

I like mechanical keyboards.

delicate stream
#

So… you don’t like the iPhone keyboard?

frigid tiger
#

How are the blackberry bold keyboards

delicate stream
#

Lol

late fulcrum
#

No, I don't like keyboards with zero tactile feedback or alignment

delicate stream
#

Fair

late fulcrum
#

Waiting for my Astro Slide 5G

frigid tiger
#

I'd like a phone with a sliding keyboard and analog sticks

delicate stream
#

I do kinda miss physical keyboards… I can’t type behind my back with a touch keyboard nearly as well

late fulcrum
#

Analog sticks? Sounds like my old Sidekick 3. That was a nice phone.

delicate stream
#

I can type in my phone without looking, but I think that’s largely because there’s autocorrect, lol

frigid tiger
#

ya I really hate touch screen controls for anything on a phone

delicate stream
#

(I typed both of these sentences without looking)

late fulcrum
#

Or a car. I loathe the push to touch screens. I like buttons and knobs I can adjust without glancing, I think it's safer while driving too.

tardy badger
#

A firm press feels tactile

delicate stream
#

Haptic != tactile?

frigid tiger
#

iPhone has good haptics imo

#

Their phones used to have 3d touch which works like MacBook trackpads

tardy badger
#

Idk, I fat finger my keyboard all the time

#

I get periods instead of spaces, O’s instead of P’s

delicate stream
tardy badger
#

I got a bigger phone thinking it would fix the problem andddd nope.

frigid tiger
tardy badger
delicate stream
#

I could type a bit faster on a good physical phone keyboard than I can on touch keyboard, but honestly not by much… always about half or less of full keyboard typing

delicate stream
#

EVEN CRUISE CONTROL

frigid tiger
#

great for cost cutting

tardy badger
#

My 21 outback has touch radio (fine because I use car play) and touch vehicle controls

late fulcrum
#

It was a little tricky to integrate my steering wheel controls to an aftermarket stereo, but I did, and it's so nice. And yes, cruise control and climate control too. Maybe I'll just keep that car.

tardy badger
#

My 23 Impreza on the other hand has only a touch radio console and mechanical controls for climate

delicate stream
#

I can understand having touch for things you really shouldn’t be doing while driving, like pulling something up on the GPS or some audio functions like YouTube music and playlists and stuff, but all the basics — play, pause, skip, volume, climate controls — should be physical. Steering wheel should have media and cruise control

#

And CLEAR SEPARATION between buttons. No continuous plastic strips you can’t feel the position!

tardy badger
#

I can manage my playlist just fine from my steering wheel, cruise control, lane helper

delicate stream
#

I wish my car had cruise control

tardy badger
#

Volume

late fulcrum
#

The cat here is like the cheapest RC model, has "stop" and "full speed", nothing in-between.

delicate stream
#

I actually don’t use the radio in my car… I just have my AirPods Pro in all the time. No media controls on the steering wheel, no cruise control… no Bluetooth or navigation or power locks or power windows

#

Which is insane when it’s a 2005, and my first car was from 2000 and DID have power everything, cruise control, media on the steering wheel (CD and tape)…

tardy badger
#

There was one point when it was illegal to drive with headphones on if it wasn’t like a headset for a CB or whatnot

#

Not sure if that ever went away

#

But AirPods can be used for calls as can most headphones these days so that line is very muddled

late fulcrum
#

I have been known to use the AM radio to track down failing power line insulators, but mostly I just listen to my ancient iPod.

delicate stream
#

I know some states have that… my AirPods are in transparency, so it’s no different from listening to the radio

tardy badger
#

I use Apple Car play

#

It’s nice for hand free

delicate stream
#

I just start my ā€œlikesā€ playlist on shuffle, and skip or pause on my watch or pods

tardy badger
#

I use steering wheel controls because it’s safer than tapping my ear every time

late fulcrum
#

I just use good old fashioned speakers. It feels weird having things in/on my ears, especially while I'm driving.

tardy badger
#

Yeah
