yeah and more precise most worry virus variant naming
magtag vaccines
@rapid hornet https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_CircuitPython_Bundle/pull/340 ๐
I actually haven't had time to test the crash on autoreload, see if it's fully fixed
doing too many things at a time
danh suggested me ways to investigate. Happy I did not try. ๐คฃ
RIP CPU
I'm surprised there isn't a debug port, or at least a special debugging version
Ah
That's weird. I decided to test 7.0 but the MagTag I was going to update happens to be running the vaccination tracker. Is the fix for this in CircuitPython 7.0.0 Beta 0? If not then I'll wait.
I think there are ways to share shell histories - but it probably depends on the shell
When you use this m_new_obj_with_finaliser does the class have to have a finaliser or does it handle it automatically?
Terminal life hard
got me if it works. seems like it was once part of fish shell and removed, probably for performance
I can read all the things
Don't worry, I'm distracted by modeling and don't understand 99% of what you're doing anyway, so I don't know what the spoilers are XD
Can CP do quad and/or octo SPI ?
100% here because I like hanging out and not because I understand, lol
smile for the camera, @teal river
one way to learn is to try listening to and grasping terms ๐
Might help if I learn more Python first XD
Speaking of MagTags...
I've seen you help others, you're pretty good at python!
Heh, getting there... Lots of context guessing XD I only started with CP a couple months ago
Now that's a nifty trick!
That's a 7 dan trick.
printf bisect
wow 3 hours
always love how you keep adding more and more prints to solve a problem
Kathump
My thoughts exactly - I'm really bad at Python - C/C++ is more my speed...
C/C++/C# is where I have the most practice
Me too - Arduino too
Same XD
game maker language ๐ and a little c++
That's why I hang out in the #help-with-arduino channel
And #general-chat
I also know some R, F#, COBOL, Fortran, BASIC, Go!, and a bunch of other things XD
ah buffers
Buffer buffer buffer
Ada, CP, Normal Python, PBASIC, and BASIC for me
(โค๏ธ lisp)
Oh, also Turbo Pascal! And a bunch of other things... I can't keep track XD
what's that 128003 magic number meaning ?
very specific to this debug issue, thanks
i should look through the gc code without all the ifs and prints
๐ฅ
Pascal, Fortran, COBOL (lol, volunteered to fix an accounting app, got stuck for months), C, C++, C#, Perl (forgot it all), Python (learning), BASIC (i mean didnt everyone use some basic?), all kinds of assembly languages. TAL (kind of a C like language used on Tandem computers)
258 could be the problem? looks like they work in odd and even, at least based on the return
i'm glad this was so easy to fix ๐
ESP32 is Harvard Arch? (separate data and instruction memory)
Some kids these days haven't played with BASIC! Or at least not real BASIC, mostly VB...
does ti basic count? lol
๐คฃ
some memory violation, yikes
I count that as much as I count CP -- it's based on BASIC, but isn't really BASIC
yea very elementary array and drawing features
Catto!
if that evil read has a kind then maybe create an exception to skip it?
Bless!
bless you
Unrelated: printing a teeny tiny milk crate...
So are there conditions where the amount of memory gc needs to free is sized so that this crash doesn't happen?
I think I missed the reasons for the finalizer - could you review what finizers are for?
Small, fast, efficient, simple -- pick 1, 2 if you're lucky :O
Ok! That was what I was poorly phrasing--I was trying to replicate it but hit a point where I couldn't replicate the bug, and couldn't figure out why. It must have been I hit a lucky 'didn't fill the last byte of the atb' when I was working on it
Two hardest problems in computer science: cache invalidation, naming things, off by one errors.
I'm confused, left and right?
Ohhh, I always visualized memory as like, a top to bottom number line...
did you discuss what needs to be done when things are moved from left to right?
in earlier podcast
That helps explain why it's there. Holy cow what an interesting bug
So it does compaction if needed?
assuming somebodies pointers need to be updated?
oof

well done!
That's got to have been a pretty awesome feeling once you got it all working and figured out why it happened
bug like that are the biggest pains to solve but give the biggest rush when you solve it
puts on heavy mask
thanks for covering that bug!
Man that bug was messing with my sensor super bad. I'm excited for tonights nightly build
Metro ESP32-S2
I added a comment that explained I had a weird case where I couldn't reproduce it
we cant see the desktop
Twitch Plays Scott's Desktop
I really need to make an advanced debugging cheat sheet for all of these things
:cough:notepad++:cough:
What did you use to make the heap graphic?
Excited for the nRF fixes!
Cool. Thanks.
Explains why i see the same power usage regardless of sleep mode, even time.sleep ๐
They're poison, Scott!
allergic reaction to peanuts?
ah yeah, I looked at rotaryio to implement countio
o phew!
it's like deep dives, it's not always the same depths
ngl, the deepest of sleeps sounds good rn
Is there a good guide on using deeper sleeps?
where do alarm checks happen? near the beginning?
So you said about time sleep -- does that need an RTC, or just based on internal clock?
heheh, wish i had those numbers, before just purchasing a bunch of microcontrollers and testing
tested nRF to 0.3mA in sleep for the feather nRF
I can see that page
OH wait no, I meant the guide
Changing URL gives 404
Wrap it in a bow and ship it!
I have a project I want to leave in the woods and low power consumption would be grand for that XD
SuperChat is a way to throw money at you on YouTube
I would do that Scott
https://www.adafruit.com/ is how you superchat ๐
That's why it's super
no soft fail messaging?
i thought the list you looked at last were error checking returns. i dunno nm i'll just watch๐
yes ty scott!
I just heard someone go "DO do DOOO!" XD
Need a feather wing with one large button.
Sounded like a human, lol
nRF feather has a user defined button, doesn't it?
If we can't over-engineer stuff why are we here? ๐
we learn and enjoy doing this so one day down the line someone will give a buck
I was about to jump off for a walk XD good show!
Thanks Scott!
Nicely done Scott.
This has been so awesome. Thank you for explaining the gc error, I couldn't understand why I couldn't make it happen again and that explanation was perfect!
๐
Thanks again for your Deep Dive Scott ... Have a Great Weekend!
thank you scott for all your great effort!
Cheers, see you anon.

Much thanks for the time keeping
Sweet baby
Bye @rapid hornet! I just joined the livestream, just in time to see the cat.
Thank you Scott, have a great weekend!
Thanks Scott
Just caught the end of this. Interesting stuff. I don't think it's a CircuitPython issue but there's something strange going on with (my?) Feather nRF52840 Express board and D2 and I see you have one: https://forums.adafruit.com/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=182055&hilit=d2
thanks all!
ttyl peeps! Off for a walk I go!
@burnt anchor I'll take a look next week when I circle back to the forum
@rapid hornet Oh, requested reminder to get the other families page for CP sleep learn guide
@teal river @rapid hornet I second that reminder. I was going to look into the nrf52 and get myself setup with one of my keyboards setup for power measurements and my brand new PPK2 (had the original one but this new one is awesome)

@rapid hornet Hi, Scott, I just want to let you know that, after the Deep Dive session of yesterday, I managed to get the MAGTAG Corona Virus Percentage indicator working, after flashing the latest version of CP.
I'll be streaming some work on CircuitPython libraries this morning. Hang out with me here in the chat and follow along on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/foamyguy_twitch or YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CNJ5jSyW5Q
Hey there Foamy
Summer ended abruptly, we now have lousy like October weather. Cold and dark and rain. ๐
oh I missed the end of the cookie cutter part, it added the _Org_ in it because you put no prefix ?
oh I think that should be a 3rd choice, not a default, also circup needs to be updated for that (but we already knew that)
That by-id is really helpful.
and broke circup ๐
Not sure I like "progress", it implies a particular application.
Yeah, like a progress bar.
Gotta go, meeting up with a friend in a restaurant. Have a nice stream and a good rest of the weekend!
Have fun.
Fill level is good.
I think the gauge would be good for audio level or display sensor values.
would just "level" alone work ?
ah yeah that makes sense
ah the hard decision, use the same word for consistency or not ?
level_color ? that doesn't sound great ๐คท
or maybe ?
Yeah foreground and background.
See my "two hardest problems in computer science " quote yesterday.
So 'regress' is the portion between the user set level and the current level when the user level is lower?
or maybe just erasing when the previous level was higher?
I thought the whole thing was redrawn when the level changed.
Properties and setters are new to me.
Yeah, properties for all the things!
Ooh, that's nice.
oh yeah there usually is not enough sleep. Oh wait I'm thinking about me
What if you always start the fill at the bottom left inside corner?
Yeah, that wouldn't work.
You always want to be counterclockwise from the line.
I'm getting the upper sections filled with radius=60 thickness=20.
Yeah the outline has to be different.
# up-down sweep
theta = 0.0
while True:
level = int(abs(math.sin(theta) * 100))
example_gauge.level = level
theta += 0.2
time.sleep(0.1)
With that I get outflow but only sometimes. ???
It just moves the level up and down.
Instead of range(0,101)
Thanks, FoamyGuy!
Thanks all, hope everyone has a good weekend

Hey folks!
Speaking of LEDs, I finally got my ESP32-S2 RGB matrix boards launched today! ๐

I was wondering if @fallow fractalโs fadecandy mapping could be leveraged for this. There, the fcserver reads a mapping of where each led is and then maps a logical bitmap to each

I'm slightly terrified how fast she gets to my pull requests
But the great part is that what would be free time is just what she loves, which happens to be her job XD that's what I want

I bet her "work day" is also not a strict set of time, but that she works on things kinda whenever a lot and does not work life in between
I also assume she doesn't pay herself hourly XD
Nice thing about salary is you can like, do 80 hours one week and then take off the next week if you want
i figured that was within the breadboard spec but now that i think about it, it's way out

Hey hello hi howdy!
Hello Everyone ๐
I just got back from the tornado! I am very very wet
My umbrella broke and my bag strapped and I'm owwie from headache from storm
But yay DigiKey and safety!
July was about 8mm of rain here, August we passed that in about 2-3 hours and then it didn't stop
full of hot air?
The river was like 3ft higher than normal, nearly over the banks
Idea on how to keep breathing from causing fluctuations: have like 4 in the room and average the readings
My cousin lives in the area that was in the warning
If it's from Philly to NYC, it must be a biiiig area... but it is a big storm system
She is in Hillsborough area
Liz!
So practically in the line of the tornado
I like those plates.
@summer tinsel that's a great idea for the keyboard
That's like an hour away from me if she's a maker/hacker looking for maker/hacker friends XD
Haha.. no sheโs a typical soccer mom/corporate mom
Ohhhh magic resize
lol
I'm a bit south of philly. We weren't quite getting Tornado warnings and such
@sage aspen nice! that editor is looking great!
Thanks. Files are here: https://github.com/dherrada/keybridge
Thanks
Lots of great projects tonight:)
Ahh, I guess I'm sorta on the edge in NE Philly -- we got a couple
I'm in Maryland, and my dad was getting tornado stuff but we were just getting flood stuff. And, well. There's a lot of water everywhere.
Yikes
holds up leaking bag tell me about it... Sooo much water
oh hey a notification about a Circuitpython RC release
Uhuh, my "see if the basement is flooding" cameras are down...
Hopefully your basement isn't flooded
Let the Hasselhoff hair doo jokes begin.
we are supposed to get 7" of rain between now and tomorrow morning
so flooding is imminent!
I hope so DX although I know the cameras didn't get swamped because it never floods more than a bit of standing water in some places. The cameras are actually outdoor grade anyway, lol
Gonna check after the show... can't do much anyway
What was this wand from?
The Suicide Squad
Get a dew sensor on it tied to a pump.
Ahh. Gotta see the new one
Sadly the drains back up and that's why it floods, so nowhere to drain the water too... and I can't pump it outside without it coming right back
@split gazelle Ohhh, that looks super cool
thanks!
@split gazelle is it a bucket brigade style fuzz? Is it based on some existing type of fuzz?
yes a transistor fuzz face
I really need to get into AdafruitIO before I put my temp sensors everywhere
Can you send binary blobs to Adafruit I/O ? More than chat like ? Say slow pics?
As much as I love tinkering and making my own server software and all, it just seems like I need to make some projects easier XD
I'm not sure if I understand what you mean all the way, you can send and receive images with adafruit.io though I've used that a fair bit.
you can send data blobs through nearly any protocol as long as you encode it to use the acceptable characters
How hi of a def pics can be pushed/pulled ?
Great projects everyone. Thanks for sharing.
Fun fun fun!
Good show! Good projects!
there is a size limit. iirc it's 100kb for data in a feed without history. I have a free account, I'm not sure about the paid accounts.
Do it! I could set up my own MQTT server but the work in that... no thanks ๐
I'd probably just do it via HTTP and junk, lol
in my experience mqtt is wayyyyy faster
I don't even know what MQTT is XD
The responsiveness of MQTT over the internet always surprises me
it's a protocol! Because you can never have enough of those!
A lightweight messaging protocol for small sensors and mobile devices, optimized for high-latency or unreliable networks, enabling a Connected World and the Internet of Things
brb, gonna see if my house is getting ready to float away
So one of the really big advantages of mqtt (there are a bunch of others, but this is the one that I have found really useful) is that instead of the client asking the broker for the value of a feed, the broker tells the client when a feed is changed. This makes it so you can do a bunch of other things while waiting for a mqtt update
It's also just so fast
That's how I was building my light up house lights (which are still sitting beside me oops). The subscribe/publish model works great for it
Basement sprung a leak
Also I forgot that the one camera down there was on an AP I removed, so no network for it... and the other one is being dookie
Pushing/pulling Matrix portal pics or Matag pics easy and/or possible via adafruit I/O's MQTT nuances ? If so, what is pixel limit and time lag ? CP and/or Arduino examples for Adafruit I/O pics ?

Bleep bloops!
just made it, had a 11 hour work day thought I would miss the start
I am so clueless sometime (newsflash). People were saying "the 3 day weekend" and I was like "what do you mean?"
Feedback on the idea of AdafruitIO [haven't used it yet, but heard of it]: I think it's great that y'all are making IoT services more of an "appliance" so folks can just jump in and make things happen instead of NEEDING to take the time to build all those services as well. I think the "you're making it too easy" comes from the same kind of thinking of "automation is bad because it takes away jobs"; when you automate a job, the human who was doing that job can do bigger and better things. With AdafruitIO eliminating the need to build services, folks can focus on DOING bigger and better things!
Live webcam snapshot to Adafruit I/O possible ? Pull to Magtag or LED matrix too ? (or manual utility needed to convert format first)
We have Stemma/Qwiic for chaining I2C devices.
Is the main problem for doing something similar for SPI all the required CS pins?
The pole/throw naming can get confusing XD but the way they were is pretty intuitive
Is there a board or recommendation of something to plug all the Trinkey's into?
JP made me spend a lot of money on those things this week >~>
Lol, JP is like the Pied Piper of electronics sales
Qtpy with reverse mount LED too would be nifty.
Is there a spherical USB hub? I want that one.
Ohhh
I don't think so, but you can make it...
That's what I'm looking for! something I can spin around

Spinny spherical USB hub with spinning ports?!
Thats a nice shade of magenta
Ohhhhh I want a VG-8010
hah, I did something similar but for C/C++... I converted all the named List of Colors from Wikipedia to C and C++ header files
Oh nice
I made a cool little script to check, erase, flash, and test ESP32-S2 devices. Itโs not fool proof and I probably should just make a bed of nails to make it more automated

Did the proper Collin's Lab videos go away? I haven't gotten recommendations for them in a while, only Lab Notes
only doin lab notes, more and more topics!
They're a really note-worthy production!
Okie dokie Loki, just wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything

Lab notes are great
You can do both.

How can I tell if I have signed up for the Adabox subscription?
My idea was a "self powered" hub. Namely a power bank and a hub in the same case. The battery would charge up whenever the power required by all the peripherals was less than the host could supply. When the peripherals require more power than the host could supply, it's automatically supplied by the battery.

Does Whipper snapper make pic decoding/encoding easier in CP or Arduino ?
Ladyada said a bad word :O
Love the "Bad Words" lol
Iโve caught a handful over the last few months
I should make some vids of swear words in sign language.
especially since we can't even say them here
lol
I'm not deaf, but my ex is. 1st words I learned were the "bad words."
nah I think there are more pressing issues
lol
that's wild! Cool thing to know
I mean... I know a few rude gestures, but I don't think they are sign language
I'm running Win 11 on a Pi 400
I've heard this is common learning new languages in general, lol
Though, I thought I was signing the word "roommate" but was actually signing the word "football"
This "Unsupported Signal" keeps flashing
what type of system and video mode? It's working for me on my Mac in Chrome

Are there any 3rd party Circuit Python libraries ?
@odd fox to understand your foe you must know your foe.
maybe the power is fluctuating and it's causing some probs
lol @upbeat coral
yup, third party libs are in the community bundle
Yup I wrote one, adding it to the community bundle was my first real PR
except mine, because i'm slacking
That might do it -- your camera or switch might not like tiny dips that the rest doesn't care about
Cross compiling C/C++ is super annoying
Iโve also contributed to the community bundle ๐
@odd fox it actually runs pretty good.
Question: Can one reasonably assume any CP board you can get today will be supported "forever"? Does CP have some minimum timeframe it hopes to support a class of devices?

Fun fact: the VISOR was featured on Lower Decks, worn by not Geordie!
Same
I find the Disney building less interesting since they stopped packing sand
It's the Disney Adafruit Museum, I'm telling you...
I'm using CP in my as-yet-incomplete Iron Man/Loki cosplay
could have used a on/off switch but cool toy
I wish my timelapse prints looked that good
Nifty
Same
Not so fun fact: Apparently the VISOR irl was incredibly uncomfortable to wear, causing discomfort and leading to more than a few instances of tripping because it was impossible to see wearing, so they'd rehearse scenes without it so he could know where to move when he couldn't see
I have always lives the Illuminati like NPI logo

I have a few of those foam-lined boxes... one from an EGA card
Is any ESD foam laser safe ?
[still has the EGA card in it, lol]
What is an EGA? Some kind of medical device?
Lol
I use.. ESD bubble wrap and ESD pink bags
Oh sweet child... it's a video standard
You younglings know NOTHING
Lol
I almost thought you meant EVGA
Lol
EGA after CGA
Question: Will Adafruit be shipping things in the magic shockless boxes?
it's a nearly 40 year old video standard!
I need to charge like a $2 premium just for special packaging
You'll never get on a commercial flight with one of those in your pocket.
Then there was Hercules graphics
how did you get that video of me?
Question for the end: will Adafruit be joining the effort to avoid purchasing shipping materials from ULINE?
I was programming in CP//M back then!
wat
why the negative for ULine
ULINE has huge ties to the former US President
@lilac tusk ... check it out ...
oh a trumpy thing
we started getting the word out in 2014 or so.
Pictured above, snippets from โLetters from the Presidentโ from the ULINE catalogs that are sent to us all the timeโฆ Ok! OVER 3 YEARS AGO (APRIL 14, 2014) we posted a now (more) pโฆ
3 years ago we posted Alternatives to ULINE shipping supplies โ shipping boxes, packing materials and mailing supplies. Looks like there an unusual amount of traffic (again) to the post, therโฆ
Okay, I just was wondering as my last Adafruit order came in a uline bag
Canadian here so it's not so important
thinks about burning the tall stack of ULINE catalogues in the corner
Ohhh, I can do an oldschool colorful DSA keyboard
@lilac tusk yep, had some left over packaging and used it
Awesome ๐
once and awhile there is something only uline has
Unfortunately
but we got rid of most of it
Honestly I don't think I ever ordered anything from them... my dad signed up for the catalogues when he started his business, but stopped using shipping stuff in like 2008, so they just pile up. I do use them for scraps sometimes, lol
We order certain packing supplies from them
@open girder glad y'all just use up what you have instead of like... tossing it.
I just ship with bubble mailers from some obscure Chinese supplier

I run my company out of a 5x7ft space off my kitchen
very nice Pi 4 case
I wish I was surprised at it anymore
Those cases are so sweet
For me Uline was the only supplier of 2" square tube with holes down the length of all sides, used as sign posts. I used them as supports to build to big video walls at work. 10' and 8' foot length
Personally if I had a salesperson being that tenacious in my place of business, they'd quickly find themselves defenestrated

why does that MacBook Pro in the demo video have a plugged up HDMI port?

Yep, that's how it is, but there's got to be a reason they want in. Maybe if they see you're using something specific they can use it as leverage or whatever
I do love this trinkey
it looks like this, I think https://www.adafruit.com/product/4994

Question: If you're using the LiPo solar charger with a Feather, can you still use the Feather's USB for charging, or only the solar charger board's USB? Do you need to disconnect the solar for working on code?

Question: proximity led glasses coming?
Anyone have suggestions for a low cost RF mixer that can downconvert frequencies in the 1.4Ghz range to lower frequencies? (to be sampled with low cost A/D converter for a radio telescope project)

Philly is currently clear

Question: Do you have a recommendation for a cheap CP WiFi board? I want to scatter temperature sensors around my house for minimum cost
I have something similar on a project and I'm always careful to only plug USB or the solar charger. Lots of warnings not to do that
Question: is it crazy that I want to use Stemma QT for neopixel stands?
Ok, so I should pull the solar then... I just don't want to explode something DX
ESP32S2 are my favorite boards for that. It's something I've looked at too
Any particular boards you've got your eyes on?
Yup! the load from the solar charger circuit goes to the battery port, I just unplug that and plug the USB in.
Any additional RP2040 boards coming? ๐
Proximity Trinkey โโ should Iโd be ble to connect to an iOS device with the proper Apple adapter? And my power consumption Problems
I like Unexpected Maker's FeatherS2 and TinyS2 I think its called

They are forecasting 7" for my area
Thanks @open girder and good night. ๐
Thank you, stay dry!
Good luck with the rain everyone
Any other RP2xxx chip variants coming? ๐
Hahaha thanks Ladyada and PT!
Thanks Limor & pt!
I actually have an idea to make a small board for this use case and for me to learn more about PCB design
do you have tours of your facility in NYC?
Thanks for the show
Bye!
Thanks!
Lemme know if you make it! I might make one too...
Bai! Good show!
stay dry
dang I wish we had some of that rain
Unlike me, I got SOAKED, lol
Bad day to fly a kite
My colleagues in Silicon Valley asked me to divert some rain. Especially to the Lake Tahoe region. But they overestimate my super powers
great way to end it
So, my walk... went out, it was already raining hard, but I had an umbrella. Made it like, 10 minutes before my shoes got wet... then I said "frack it" and stopped avoiding most puddles. Got progressively more wet over the next half hour... then my umbrella broke. Then a few minutes later, carrying my broken umbrella, my BAG broke, strap came out from the bottom, so I had to hold that for like 20 minutes walking the rest of the way home, and the rain and lightning got worse DX
That's wicked cool. I wish they had a Ferris Wheel in Times Square when I visited in 2019.
ooo @hard hollow playing us out, cool track!
But I did not die
I'm glad we all have not died. Keep on not dying peeps
Ferris Wheel! I miss the Toys R Us one, but this one looks more interesting ๐
I decided to not work tonight (strange but true). Maybe I should watch something. Have Disney+ and netflix and Prime and others. What's good? Seen Loki and Wanda Vision.
What If... if you want more Marvel. I really like Solar Opposites
I know. That was cool. Although I did notice the crowds in Time Square were not practicing social distancing!
Are you controlling my YouTube ads? I just got a Solar Opposites ad, lol
Cool. I'll check out Solar Opposites perhaps
What does a 3Vo pin do?
3 volts
The Falcon and The Winter Solder was pretty good, What If...? is also good but just getting started, anything outside of that can be really hit or miss for Marvel on Disney+. Netflix, if you like animated stuff, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra are both awesome [although not new, lol]
Basically you hook something that needs 3 volts up to it and then hook the other side up to a GND pin and it powers stuff
Cool. I was wondering about the Winter Soldier
3Vo = 3 Volts out
but I like Winter Solder even better
Ah, volts out. Got it.
I'd make sure you have all the MCU movies under your belt before TFaTWS -- it doesn't make much sense without most of that backstory
At least not as much sense as it should
I don't know if I have seen them all yet. So perhaps I will do that
Good excuse for a marathon! :D
indeed
WandaVision and Loki certainly stand better alone, they sorta explain what you need to know as you go
Yeah I enjoyed both of those.
Soooo excited for more Loki!
me too
Oh! The Mandalorian is also great if you like Star Wars
I do. I started watching it but grew a little bored.
I'll give it another chance
Who can resist a baby Yoda?
It does kinda plod along compared to modern media... But I love that old Western style, the fact they let you soak in the world instead of RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN forever

Is there a way to get notified for the Not-Forever Trinkeys??
