Thanks for the link @waxen thistle
yeah super nice board, where did you get it made, Andy
favorite keeb switches? GO!
They're manufactured by pcbcart.com
wow, go pcbcart! I use them but never though to try matte finish
Yeah, it's pretty nice! They have a matte option for black or green
Favorite keeb switch? Matias! http://matias.ca/switches/click/
Hehe, so far so good! 😃
@prime sentinel 😮 you'll never guess what I'm hacking on
Keyboard switches of Cherry Purple
Mattias QuietPro for MacOS
That's a nice one. I'm currently using a Tactile Pro 4.
that one sounds like a trading floor at the stock exchange
These low profile switches are pretty nice, I've made a few builds using the tactile "brown" switches
I started on a teletype machine - that was a keyboard 😄
I started with (of all things) a Flexowriter, then moved on to an ASR-33 teletype.
And hey @inner spade what's that acrylic JP is talking about?
blue tape -- the residue-less cousin of duct tape
I have no idea what a Flexowriter is - opens a Google window...
For people who miss the teletype printouts, there is a font http://iclces.uk/articles/a_teletype_font.html
hang on -- I'll get the link...
there is 3D printing file for cherry mx
I'm using Oak Full-travel Membranes at the moment (Sun 3 workstation keyboard circa 1984).
my desk right now (ft. mattias!)
Black LED acrylic sheet looks like a matte black acrylic when it is not lit, but add a light behind it and watch it transform.
I'm using a boring keyboard -- 2013 macbook pro.
Born 1983.Dead never.Cherry MX keyboards forever!http://deskthority.net/wiki/Cherry_MX
That last screw is a little tricky — a bit of pressure with a finger on the top should help when screwing it in
The keyboards that came with a Research Machines RM380Z were good - clanky!
@inner spade Cheers, thanks!
Cherry would be my choice for building a kbd, blues likely.
Toothpick?
magician JP
Round peg, square hole!
round stop button
Heh, this is my desktop now
@fervent kestrel Such a clean design!
Looks like a keyboard from the rebooted USS Enterprise (kelvin/JJ abram's lens flare timeline)
Clean and sleek
I get a lot of use out of the rotary encoder variation of the build (can be made with the same circuit board)
Neat!
it's a mini trellis on steroids ^^
@haughty quiver That's so cool to see it working as a camera switcher!
That coupon code, again?
@fervent kestrel What do you use them for with your setup?
MINIKBD is the coupon code @eager sapphire
Thanks Bruce
I like the matrix circuit, it can be extended easily without using to many pins
My encoder build has a volume control on the large knob and track select on the smaller one, and then I have a set of six keyswitches that I use to put a set of arrow keys on my left hand (so the other hand can stay on the mouse)
That's where the idea came from first, to get a full sized set of arrow keys over to my left hand
Very nifty
At that size and price, one could build one of those for each game they play ^^
"fhqwhgads"?
GS
it is open source!
@fervent kestrel 👍
@fervent kestrel amazing job ! Thank you for sharing !
and the board is also 10% off (or more in quantity) https://www.tindie.com/products/andyclymer/minikbd-little-diy-keyboard-kit-for-the-trinket/
thanks Yannick!
yeah, this is a great project
I think there are some "game" extensions.
Is it possible to use Trinket M0 for USB MIDI?
MINIKBD
MINIKBD
@umbral stump, yes when programming it with Arduino you can do USB MIDI
@haughty quiver Thanks for another awesome show!
thanks very much.
Such a great demo, thank you for featuring the MiniKbd!
Thanks @haughty quiver ! (and @fervent kestrel , too!)
@fervent kestrel this is a terrific, fun project, thanks for sharing it, and for coming by
@haughty quiver you have keys for Trellis M4?
@haughty quiver awesome livestream! @cinder wind is that a Serial method or with MIDIUSB library?
I'll hang around for a while if anyone has any other questions about it, CircuitPython is so much fun for a project like this because of how easy it is to edit the code, you can comment out some code and make a quick change just for one task and then easily swap it back —
If anyone's wondering how I use the MiniKbd https://t.co/clz8VeX1WL — I changed the code real quick on the one I use for volume/track change and assigned the knobs to the keys I keep repeatedly pressing in @typesupply 's Prepolator, very satisfying to not tap-tap-tap the...
i like your Davies clone knob in that picture, @fervent kestrel
@umbral stump with Arduino, you can do both USB MIDI and Serial MIDI. With CircuitPython you can do Serial MIDI but not USB MIDI yet
oh, nice, I didn't know that GUI mod to arrows does that!
Ah the keyboards I have known and loved - original Commodore Pet not so much!
Yeah! I have lots of parts hanging around from old synth builds
:)
@cinder wind already working on that, https://github.com/adafruit/circuitpython/issues/672, thanks for help!
Yeah, the app I was using at that moment needed Command-Right and Command-Left keypresses
@umbral stump, yup! 😃
Thanks for help
oh, I see, @fervent kestrel I thought you were saying that caused the auto repeat. But that's built into 'press' of course.
Ah right, yeah that was only to add the "command" modifier
I use three Griffin Power Mates as my control surface for Premiere, but it's not really supported anymore and one day I may need to roll my own with the MiniKbd
Oh wow, nice setup
Slick. I have a single Powermate, it's a neat little device.
soon @haughty quiver make it fully compatible Keyboard with those
You might like this one, at a request from a builder I sketched a way to use the rotary encoder build with more than one app — clicking the left encoder can change between modes: https://github.com/andyclymer/minikbd/tree/master/Software/TwoEncoder-Multimode
and you can tell which mode you're in by the LED color
that's excellent
any those minority report type?
@prime sentinel same
Has anyone bought the 5” 800x 480 hdmi? I can’t get it to work
@magic remnant how long ago did you buy it?
I had a WaveShare Raspberry Pi screen, but when I dropped it, that killed it.
Do you know any good ideas for a screen for video?
I use an Atrix dock. Gives a screen, keyboard, touchpad, and rechargeable battery.
Cool!

There we go, much better view from my webcam hehehe
Tandy leather shops are absolutely still around! There's even one in my town... https://www.tandyleather.com/en/
Since 1919, Tandy Leather has been providing leathercrafters with quality leather and leathercraft supplies, leather craft tools, leather craft stamps, leathercraft kits, leather craft dyes, leather belts, leather lace, cowhide rugs, conchos and more.
It's really cool to visit them, they're very community-focused.
Yeah, I go to Tandy Leather Shops occasionally
There's a Tandy leather quite near here! My dad used to shop there when he was doing a lot more leatherwork.
Coincidentally, it's in the same plaza as the old RadioShack. Would've been nice to see both of them side by side -- the old and the new.
He still has all of his leatherworking equipment. He did a leatherworking project for Christmas to hold the stockings on hooks that are on leather strips so there's only two hooks on the post itself. Brass hardware and fancy leather.
Oh nice! It's something I dabble in (got a box of leatherworking tools at an estate sale). Figure it's a great way to build clasps and holders for cosplay & electronics that are very rugged and durable.
Thanks everyone for sharing!
Great work everyone.

would it be possible to use the esp32 beyond just wifi as a co-processor? maybe like an esp32 seesaw but for graphics (or audio) @open girder
Question for AAE: What's the main differences between Adafruit Feather M0 Bluefruit LE and NRF52840?
AAE Q: does the foot pedal pot have a on/off switch built in, or can one be added easy?
Hi, what would be the right sensor kind of a RFID or similar to measure waiting time for trucks in a queue , kind of what disney does to people at parks, All this to integrate thru WIFi and Arduino?. Thanks. ADL
it will be sued with a 7v, 900 mA power supply ofr sewing machine
do you have a great source for changing lighting for moon or no moon? to help with seekig stars??
i can't really. it's a DC motor straight to DC jack with pedal inbetween. current "pedal" for machine is micro switch only
ok i'm working on the outdoor lights for the stars and the moon any help you might know of would be great!
(646) 248-7822

@simple goblet maybe not a sensor but you can do something programmatically based on the phase of the Moon and rise/set times of the Moon.. Check out a Python package called PyEphem.
@viral sail oh wow thank you! i'm looking for something that will change colors and then i can maybe alexa or google home to work thanks so much!

Hi, Tom in Australia
I strongly suggest looking at the Dell 2007fp and 2001fp monitors -- they're 4:3, VERY high quality IPS for the time they were released (2007 and 2001, respectively).
And they were bought by businesses in droves, so they are plentiful in the second-hand market.

@split gazelle do you know the person who added module support? we should add a board definition for it
@rapid hornet yar I'll message you
So, where's the Adabot constellation?
that silkscreen is gorgeous
Yep.
Cool constellations.
Now the real question -- is the design of the consolations reversed, as they are in grand central?
Hi!
Is that camera feed a live feed anywhere?
The selective solder machine, @ivory kiln ? I don't think so, but that would be nifty
that slider is on my project list
Yup, the selective solder machine video feed. Ok, can put out a request for it to be? Lol, it'd pretty cool to log into periodically to view.
I have said this before, and I will say it again. The production values & editing on Noe & Pedro's videos is top notch. They're beautiful videos to watch, and even better to Make from.
LED trampoline! Yay! (I coded that 😄 )
🎉
awesome design
This is such an awesome & beautiful design!
That's a neat idea.

That's pretty awesome, thanks 😃
they're a bit slinky-esque. feels really cool

How many feathers can you stack?
I'm not sure what the plug in the center but is it going to come with a right angle plug option if it would be beneficial?
It's an SWD connector for things like JLink programming.
I should have asked is how many wings can be stacked?
pretty!!
indeed!!
magnificent!!
That font is something else, I love it.
That's a lot of GPIO!
it's a beautiful piece of art!
great job @low fractal
I need that already.
not really engineer-ish but did you guys happen to capture any of the ConEd special edition blue sky in any of your timelapses last week?
Q: Is Tony Dicola still around? Have not seen him in a while. He does amazing work!
What is the price range on the Grand Central
@split gazelle You mean when aliens totally didn't land in Queens?
Is this the chat for the livestream?
@vocal void Yep!
Q: What realm of engineering do guys do? Do have like mechanical and electrical engineers or something?
Question: What new years resolution do you have for Adafruit? What's a resolution you wish the industry would make?
Q: Can the Grand Central, n if so how many, control steppers? I want to automate my minilathe, but need to control 2 Nema 23's n a smaller stepper.
@rancid depot Tony is no longer contracting for Adafruit. Not sure what he's up to now.
@rapid hornet I hope he's doing well.
Me too
@waxen thistle Me too! I saw he climbed Mt Rainier over the summer on his Instagram
@rapid hornet Thanks!
Q: I am currently a senior in high school heading off to college. I am definitely doing CS as my major but I want to do another engineering alongside it. I understand that EE would go extremely well with it but in your experience which would be more valuable for long term
@rancid depot no problem!
@open girder Is there a way to change the I2C address on the VL53L0X?
To use two at the same time.
If there is nothing in the datasheet you could always use a multiplexing chip.
@weary ravine Good call.
That place where hardware and software meets is the most fun place to be.
@clear matrix from the learn guide:
For future reference, the default I2C address is 0x29. You can change it, but only in software. That means you have to wire the SHUTDOWN pin and hold all but one sensor in reset while you reconfigure one sensor at a time
Then there is computer engineering which I am not too familiar with
Which seems like the exact middle
Thanks!
@odd stream Totally agree.
What's they best Adafruit Bluetooth Feather to connect several devices with a wifi capable board (maybe pi?) to upload data to IoT? It does or doesn't have to be mesh...
That's where I started, 30ish years ago... and I'm finally back to it 😃
Pretty wicked cool prize

Thanks @open girder, @hard hollow and @rocky reef!
Thanks! Great evening of shows.
@open girder Thanks for another awesome evening of shows! Thanks @hard hollow and @rocky reef for being on the show! Happy New Years to all -- let's MAKE it an awesome 2019! 🎆
🎉
thanks for a great set of shows && happy new year!
Thanks and good night.
Thanks all!
Night all.
Thanks for a great show. Goodnight everyone!
tyty
Night all - have a good year!
Very enjoyable shows!
Wow didn't realize almost a full 90 min Ask an Engineer. Grreat show guys!
Lots of goodies for the new year -- tons of new products, nice retrospectives from 2018.
That stinks, Discord isn't letting me use the Neo Trellis Emoji. I try & select it & it just links to pay for some Discord emoji upgrade.
Ah yeah, you need to have Discord Nitro to use animated emoji.
late-watching the livestream. Thanks for the Rust shoutout @proper trench
Might be a few mins late, getting a late lunch. You wouldn’t like me when I’m hangry -hulk-.
Hot beverage in hand. Prepped for the workshop!
TOPH - favorite breakfast spot by far
The green chili eggs Benedict is ... exceptionally good
My son and my granddaughter took me there when I was visiting a couple of years ago. I was hooked. They just built two in our area on the other side of the state, so the breakfast commute is a lot shorter now.
That’s a beautiful thing - it’s but a five minute drive from here (if I do the driving LOL)
Ha! I used to have to leave at 4:00AM for an 8:00AM breakfast meet.
that's early
Zoot alor! C’est Jean Parc!
Yup. TOPH... and family, too. The scenic panoranda was always nice, as well.
The two near here (Littleton, Denver Tech) have no real view, except for a collection of fancy plates.
I think there’s one up in Boulder, too
Oui, c'est moi!
That disc reminded me of a turntable calibrator from back in the day, JP
Just a BTW
FUNKY NOISES DETECTED
Voice levels good, too!
Good afternoon all you wonderful people!
I use the M0! ....when I'm using something that's not as CPU intensive, and since I have a few still sitting around 😃
You're inside the MakeCode Matrix. All I see are red leds, blue leds, green leds....
@waxen thistle Lol.
🕵 Mister Anderson Park.
@waxen thistle Yeah, even a ATMega328 has it's uses.
I take it the ‘rim’ is the clock/timing track
The live demo gnomes are out today!
Lol. At least it works.
half way to a Serato setup. just need a mixer...then you can crab scratch that bad boy!
Clever/handy use of that mount!
Indeed!
Yeah, fused toner is prettyy shiney.
Perhaps ink-based marks instead of toner?
I was thinking a matte black paint might be good.
Maybe you could print it onto clear acrylic (the thin stuff used for report covers etc.) Then have the light shining through it, instead of replecting.
Are those phototransistors wired to A/D or just digital thresholds?
It's tough to determine what IR likes to see when we're using our eyes...
reflecting
@lavish patrol That would work well too
@odd stream Very awesome collaboration!
Debouncers need to be undated each time through the loop
Now if you made it with fabric, you could play cords on it.
then you can check rose, fell (on the last update) or current value
@waxen thistle Is this a new thread?
@waxen thistle You would need multi-threaded support for that.
I'd feel hemmed in.
I think we can stitch in the melody if we work at it.
You guys are funny... I'm in stitches
I guess once we've ironed out the bugs.
@haughty quiver Maybe consider support/bearings under the edge of the disk.
So that it's not relying 100% on the seating on the servo.
Firing on all tracks!
that could be an easy "shift" button mod!
We need "those" projects to remind us of the virtues of patience and troubleshooting 😃
@haughty quiver Thanks again for another fun show!
Thanks, @haughty quiver
thanks @haughty quiver! and @odd stream! great project
How about individual, tubular shrouds for the sensors?
👍 John
@inner spade Another good idea.
Super project! Ambitious and inventive! @haughty quiver
@inner spade That could be incorporanted into the mounting arm.
Might be useful to plot each of those sensor outputs as you tweak things physically
Graph-style
@odd stream or as a shield layer (plexi with drilled holes)
@inner spade For me it'd be easier to design it into a 3d printed part
@inner spade I'm guessing you have a laser cutter
There you go. I'm only set up for subtractive tooling...
Thanks all, this one is one that's going to be rumbling around in the back of my mind for a while...
I do my subtractive fabrication in Fusion360.
I use hand tools. Prefer the challenge for now. Hands are still steady enough for most fab work.
@haughty quiver Very cool project. Thanks for getting me involved.
Nice to see the collaboration. Good job!
I miss my woodworking days. I had table & mitre saws for large scale cuts, but everything past that was hand tools. Including several that I'd made.
Couldn't have done it without you @odd stream !

Microfruit? Adasoft? 😉
I haven't a clue about cartoon network shows, and not much of a fan of Microsoft (burned by it's early shenanigans) but this is really cool.
@odd stream Likewise. I'm so far removed from modern cartoons, I just smile and nod. And although I use flavors of all major OSes, my go-to isn't Microsoft.
But when large companies play nicely in the spirit of education & learning....I'm down with that.
I like Family Guy - but I guess that's not the sort of cartoons we're talking about.
@waxen thistle Agreed, Micro$ofts's educational stuff is nice. I've always been a bit of a fan of Microsoft Reseach.
Or, “Rick and Morty”
Microsoft have somewhat redeemed themselves in recent years.
I really can't stand cartoons other than BoJack Horseman & Archer. Cartoon Network wasn't a thing when my kids were.. well.. kids.
“Rick and Morty” is of an entirely ... different ilk
Couldn't really get into Bojack Horseman.
@odd stream When we were younger "kids" 😉
Don't get "bare conductive ink" mixed up with "bear conductive ink". 🐻
Yogi -- smarter than the average microprocessor!
Don't start with the puns - I couldn't bear it.
Could get very grizzly on Discord
It might polarise the discussion.
You guys are merciless.
I'm trying not to panda to anyone.
@rocky reef and @hard hollow will need to claw back the conversation
Well, @rocky reef and @hard hollow are out of hibernation now, so...
Gesundheit!
Bless you!
Bless you!
@rocky reef has lost his bearing as he is hiding behind the armeture
Maybe we should just paws for a moment.
it is getting a bit unbearable
Coffee is like that... get s stronger when you heat it.
It's out... "outta stock" last I noticed.
Mine showed up yesterday.
Limited amounts are being released when available, from my understanding.
If you're interested, sign up for in-stock notification....and be quick.
Yup
It's one of those things on my eventual "to get" list. As wickedly awesome as it is, I just don't have the cycles right now for tinkering.
Polar Express - full of polar bears. 😉
Very pawsh
That Skull print with the eyes, they probably used something like Fusion 360 to edit the STL to accomidate the electronics. I'm doing something very similar with a project of mine.
@ivory kiln Does it involve bears? 😬
Gotta LOVE Polar Express! That's an awesome project guys!
Bears? @lavish patrol not a clue.
Lol.
With a dad and uncle like them, the other kids in school must love it when it comes to school projects 😉
Lol, ya really. Not to mention their friends coming over the house & seeing all the 3D printer & various projects.
Science fair projects -- someone makes a vinegar + baking soda volcano. Another cleans a penny using the acid from coca-cola.
....and they sent a gopro into low earth orbit while pinging off satellites using CircuitPython. 😛
Ahoy! Ahoy! Don't forget the Ahoy!
It's hip to be a square wave.
thanks for hanging out folks!
@hard hollow @rocky reef Thanks for another awesome show!
Thanks for a great show guys!
Thanks @hard hollow and @rocky reef
@rocky reef and @hard hollow thanks for another Koalaty show!
Bya all. I'll see you back here in eight hours. 😀
My stuff will not be ready tonight - looking forward to next week!

@normal plover At least they're using TCP instead of UDP.
Aaand we're away!
👋
Hello from GMT land where it is already half past midnight!
@fallen siren Its 19 hours past here
Model M! I type on one right now.
Woa! I haven't seen one of them for ages.
Hmm, I wonder if JP is into MIDI and CircuitPython....not to put you on the spot there John 😉 🎹
It's certainly one that's sought after.
They would stand up to a lot of abuse
The rows don't have different profiles?
@rapid hornet is truly keyed in to things
If folks are interested in an IBM Model M, but want a new one -- Unicomp bought the rights to manufacture them, and they do so to this day.
Keycaps for Code!
@river peak Don't switch the topic.
I have the 2nd best keyboard. A Sun N86, USB version.
They've been sitting on that project all year
Lol.
@leaden trail I have a Sun type 3.
Does anyone (other than me!) know why we drop a ball in Times Square?
2 actually. It's been my keyboard for about 6 years now.
(no googling)
@normal plover so that is tonight then?
@pearl shoal It's how they used to signal the time to ships in the harbor, I think.
Because you didnt have a penny??
Something regarding the Navy and time synchronization, that’s all i remember.
Yes! They needed accurate time to determine their longitude.
What Andy said
(Great documentary book named Longitude)
@pearl shoal I think the original is at Greenwich, London.
CP support for ADP?
MOAR KEYBOARDS!
@rocky reef You need to look into the mech keyboard sub-culture. There are some great boards available.
There's no escape from classic keyboards!
that apple keyboard looks just like the keyboard I had on my very first computer when I was a kid which was a mac computer
@waxen thistle I think you've shifted the subject...
And so Adafruit maybe could sell a keyboard with the same mechanical wonderfulness as in the original Model M keyboard, with a USB connector.
Step 1: find it
I like the keyboards with no numeric keypads.
@eager sapphire The brand Unicomp sells them... https://www.pckeyboard.com/
With that genuine touch, Bruce?
yeah I just introduced my friend's daughter to wearables -- she is thrilled thanks Erin!
@eager sapphire From my understanding, they bought IBM's rights to make them according to the old tech & research....I own one of them, and I can't tell the difference between them and my Model Ms.
Even MOAR keyobards!
Thanks, Bruce
We always have more space for keyboards!
@eager sapphire Well, one thing -- the vintage Model Ms are WAY heavier. Metal backing vs. the unicomp plastic backing. But the key action is virtually the same.
This is out of control! No escape from the keyboards
whoa. ball cam. JP's a pro.
@haughty quiver had an opportunity... and jumped on it
He shoots, he scores.
@haughty quiver That turned out great!!
And if you're into home gardening, you can always draw your beets....and use CP with a water sensor.
@haughty quiver is serious about beats.
All thanks be to @odd stream for his help with code and debouncer library!
Thanks for taking us for a spin @haughty quiver
Just for you @haughty quiver
awesome Adveture Time builds!
Hmm. I could go for a big bowl of borscht now that I think about it.
Lol.
Dizzying project @haughty quiver
yummm @onyx arrow
Cap touch drums running off beets
Chill beets are better than a rock garden.
I was going to make a pun, but I'm beat.
lol
@lavish patrol Don't worry, one will sprout up eventually.
budum tish
@strange mantle haha Ball cam is the way!
Bye, everyone!

Hi, @haughty quiver
that Princess Bubblegum outside temperature indicator was awesome.
@waxen thistle i'm sad i missed it. sounds like i missed a lot based on the recap
@velvet beacon Many keyboards.
@velvet beacon Evening!
@waxen thistle devsum and hack were my 'vacation' last year was shape & then NOMCON -- which were a little differet. after ces i thought devsum was like best of best mini expo

Lol.

@waxen thistle Pink elephant.

Q for the Q section: What's the best way to drive neopixels from live audio (like a VU meter?) Probably 5 strips of 20 dots. I was thinking RPi3 + Fadecandy but there's no audio in. Perhaps one of the M4 boards?
YES!
Q: @haughty quiver do you think that if I used HDPE melty - I can make waterproof enclosure? have you tried this?
Particle Argon - nRF52840 with BLE, Mesh and WiFi https://www.adafruit.com/product/3997
