Ah. Cool.
@young adder With your permission (you gave me the idea) I'd like to write it up as a guide. I'd list you as a contributor. And get your feedback on the code.
Cool. I'm working on a snazzy "You win" thing now.
Hey hey. Everyone loves a good "you win" !
@haughty quiver is that ur imac pro in that foul fowl project?
does anyone have some time to chat about how to make a new c level circuit python lib?
I'm struggling
i'm trying to make a nvm like module, see the" scratch ram, or something" pr in github, and am getting quite lost!
@severe vigil Did you have a look at my guide? It covers the basics.
Greetings, good people of the interwebs. 😃

The problem with what I do these days is that there's no such things as holiday breaks. That is NOT a complaint 😃
If you enjoy what you’re doing, you don’t even want a break
Because it’s already a break
Thanks guys
Yup. I'm doing what I was doing on breaks when I had a job where I took holiday/weekend breaks.

Does the Neo Trellis support Circuit Python ?
@young adder All my NeoTrellisM4 projects have been in CircuitPython (I believe).
I need to install it on there, then, I guess
cool to explain this on a analog synth, makes it clear.
Is this in scale or chromatic?
This is all about audio synth, I know. But is there a way to get USB Midi in and Midi clock to sync with other Midi gear?
ParkTrellis
Fun stuff @haughty quiver I've used this tool/lib before with a Teensy & it's propshield. Fun stuff. I'd love to see this ported to CircuitPython.
okay, this is a good advice, I will look there on the teensy sketches.
I don't know if this is isolated to mine or not...I'm hoping it was just a compiling issue and not a hardware one
why is there a time limit?
Great introduction to the design tool, @haughty quiver ! Reminds me of the ol' SynthEdit tool, at least in principle. Thanks!
thanks, was great again.
Thanks @haughty quiver !
Thanks @haughty quiver !

@dense marlin I could talk all day, but then I'd never write the guides!
I see.
@haughty quiver I loved to have a long workshop at superbooth on this
I mean take not give. Maybe some has time to come over 😉
hum.. the neo trellis doesn't show up on my Arduino IDE. Anyone tried to use it on Linux ?
That sounds really fun @dense marlin !
@young adder have you updated the two SAMD board definitions?
Bonus music!
Can anyone please point me in the right direction? My neotrellis m4 keeps crashing with the 16 step sequencer. It's very frustrating .
It's the UF2 from the page so not many variables
oops thanks for pointing it out @inner spade I never stopped the stream
Oh now, music is over
@inner spade what album is it?
not on an album, just a little loop I wrote
Just joking, @dense marlin . Perhaps a passive-aggressive suggestion. 😉
guess not...
@quick veldt can you try running the bootloader updater? Hang on, I get the link
(p.s. sometimes it takes people more than 3 minutes to respond to help queries)
Yes, I know. I've just been very frustrated recently. I also got a lemon USB cable but that has already been resolved.
Oh !
I found the culprit !
that nice metal USB cable in Ada Box 010 : is it power only ?
try this @quick veldt https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-neotrellis-m4/update-bootloader
because as soon as I switched it with my usual cable, it worked
@young adder I also had issues with that cable on the NeoTrellis.
The data didn't work reliably
yep, I confirm
I had data, but only about 50% of the time.
Bummer. I have only used mine for power, I'd better test it for data
if that's the only thing in the box that is not working properly, then... so be it 😃
@inner spade did that make half size binaries, running twice as fast ?
the best luck I've had with fancy looking cables that work really well are the Anker fabric covered ones.
@young adder Ha! Yup, reduced it to unary. 😉
Well, given that it comes from Adafruit, I'd have thought it was a good quality cable
so instead of 100% satisfaction, I'll rate this box 99.9%
Ok, ran the bootloader updater.
We'll strive for 100.1% next time to balance things out.
that's a fail, @open girder ^^
wow tough crow 😉
@quick veldt OK, try getting back into bootloader mode and drag on the sequencer .uf2
Same problem
use the best cable you own
all the awesome stuff i give 100%
Yup :) Used one of my trusty ones. Nice and thick.
I'm torn between flashing Cirtcuit Python on the Neo Trellis, or giving it a go with Arduino
OK, hold on, I think we may have a file system erase procedure for you to try
Ok thank you so much.
(BTW everybody dollar tree speakers make great accessories for your NeoTrellis. :)
Holly cow !!!!!!!! How fast is the USB connection on this thing ?? The upload took half a second !
My NeoTrellis crashes too with Cirtcuit Python flashed on it
@quick veldt I'd like you to try putting CircuitPython onto it and then clearing out the file system with a command we have.
ah, now its running well, after a reset
@quick veldt follow this to first putting on the CircuitPython for Trellis M4 https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-neotrellis-m4/circuitpython
Then, look and see if there are .wav files or folders of them on the CIRCUITPY drive. Delete them.
@haughty quiver which file should I grab from GitHub for the circuit pythong library pack ?
the 4.x bundle
ok
ok thanjs !
@quick veldt if you want to be extra clean about it: https://learn.adafruit.com/welcome-to-circuitpython/troubleshooting#circuitpy-drive-issues
Once that drive is cleaned up, you can go back to bootloader mode and drag on the sequencer .uf2
So Circuitpython is messing with the pre compiled sequencer program?
more likely .wav files that are on the flash ram are
hmm
So once I've reinstalled circuitpython what else should I do?
follow troubleshooting steps?
yes
ok will do
BTW, this is where this is mentioned as a potential problem: https://learn.adafruit.com/trellis-m4-beat-sequencer/faq-troubleshooting
Oh...
I'm not certain it's what's happening on yours, but sound like it may be. What was on your board before the seqeuncer?
ah, yes, that definitly has loads of samples on it
I'll test one starting with that and then flashing w seqeuncer
yeah...still doing it
But there is certainly some relation to circuit python with this issue because it plays the "welcome to adabox 10."
that sample isn't included on anything but adabox trellises I assume?
yes
so even though you ran the filesystem clearout script in the REPL you still hear that sample now coming from the Arduino seqeuncer?
Nope I just deleted them from the usb storage device...I'll use the REPL method now.
The guide just said "remove"
ok, yes, try the more robust command now
I have troubles getting Circuit Python of my M4
I see the TRELM4BOOT disk
I drag adafruit-circuitpython-trellis_m4_express-en_US-20181212-xxxxx.ef2 onto it
well now mu won't pick up my trellis
uf2 right?!
yup..it does :)
Going to follow some more troubleshooting steps
Was just updating you
doe sit show up in finder/exlorer as CIRCUITPY or NO NAME?
circuitpy
Windows 10
if you are comfortable using putty or another similar program, try connecting to the REPL that way instead of Mu.
115200
is it supposed to reappear as CIRCUITPY on its own after dragging the circuitpythong uf2 file ?
yes, but definitely try a reset or even unplug/replug
ok I'm in
beat ya to that one. Had the guide in hand. (or in my screen)
nice
ok cleared...now for the moment of truth
no 😦 cycling power didn't make CIRCUITPY appear
that locks it from being overwritten?
I am running bootloader 2.0.0
sorry, crossing similar stream.
Oh darn. It did not work.
@quick veldt did you do the bootloader lock thing already?
yeah sorry ^^ I kinda hijacked your support session there !
Yeah earlier
ok, so what just happened?
can you reboot it and try using the top row only?
something isn't clearing from memory on your board.
second row sample slots should all be empty
the top row was working fine earlier
only the bottom left ones have problems
specifically the two bottom left
ah, I didn't realize that,
can you try going into record mode and overwriting those?
darn, very sorry to hear it
oh. so not just now?
plot thickens
sounds like there was something stubborn caught in that part of memory
ok left most bottom one is cleared
if you can overwrite each slot w some silence it may be clear sailing going forward
I'll still try to replicate here to understand
@young adder how's it going?
ok...well not smooth sailing for me
It's just acting super weird overall
playing sounds without me doing anything
Not so good. It is still not showing up as CIRCUITPY after dropping the file onto it
I really like the metal cable that came with the box. I couldn't find it on the site - user error, or is it not available for separate purchase?
OK, let me see if there are any other good ways to flush memory
@young adder can you try to copy over the .uf2 on a different machine?
@quick veldt that's nightmare fuel
yeah...where in the world is that random beat coming from
Also - I don't know if it's related - but my PC crashes a lot - keyboard and mouse, both USB, stop working.
I didn't make it
@lavish stream it's not currently available as a separate item
@haughty quiver thanks. @quick veldt You are haunted by cowbells!!! Oh no! #NoMoreCowbell
Yeah cowbells, sped up ladyada voice, and electronic screeching.
@haughty quiver I don't have another machine right now.
Oh, let me get it form a machine in "the cloud" and bring it back
@young adder the PC and peripheral crash could be current draw.
Can you try w a powered USB hub?
or different USB port, etc.
it is on a powered USB. That's what toubling me
and it only seems to happen when I've dragged the uf2 file on the device and reset it
Maybe I got really unlucky and got a dud @haughty quiver because this is acting super inconstantly.
but it's just a feeling, it might not be 100% true
@quick veldt could be, I'm checking if we have any other recommendations
@young adder can you connect to the REPL via command line?
It seemed to be working fine with Circuitpython and your Midi thing.
@quick veldt that's puzzling
I think I may step back from this for a bit and resume troubleshooting later. If you have a new recommendation feel free to tag me. Thanks again for your time.
you bet, sorry it's not behaving as expected!
I'll check that out once I reboot my pc again. Same procedure : drag CP's uf2 file on the device , no CIRCUITPY drive appear, and a few seconds later the whole USB bus of the PC crashes.
It's working perfectly with the Arduino IDE , and I'm more a C++ guy that a Python guy so I'll be ok I think.
@young adder hmm, maybe we should try you on a different version of CircuiPython. It's possible the one you're using is being particularly flakey wrt USB.
yeah, or maybe there is something wrong with linux and this version of CP.
do you know if CP 3.x is available for the Neo Trellis ?
yeah fr or en I can do, not sure I can handle Finish ^^
And no, I don't think we had a CircuitPython 3 for Trellis M4
@quick veldt could you try the QSPI eraser as detailed here? https://forums.adafruit.com/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=144726
right, it's getting late
I'm going to bed, and I'll do C++ with my Neo Trellis this week-end !
OK, sorry the CircuitPython is being elusive!
No problem. as I said I'm not a Pythong guy
And, look at the bright side : the 4.0.0 alpha5 stoped my PC from crashing !
so we did make progress !
this is an improvement for sure :)
Bye now, TTYL !
@haughty quiver Hope the show went well 😃
Thanks @waxen thistle it was loads of fun!
very good guess! hallo-crickit-feather-trelli-wing
Ah, right. Robotic ghosts that jam.
@young adder Ha, I accidentally used that (Finnish) EDIT: Filipino CircuitPython .uf2 and got a Finnish error message `Ang awtomatikong pag re-reload ay ON. i-save lamang ang mga files sa USB para patakbuhin sila o pasukin ang REPL para i-disable ito.
Pindutin ang anumang key upang ipasok ang REPL. Gamitin ang CTRL-D upang i-reload.`
@haughty quiver I got the Arpeggiator sketch from Collin synced to Midi Clock via USB
MidiUSB.h Library is used in Trellis already and can be used for MidiUSB.read(); also.
Yes, I will. But not now, it's already late in Germany …
Gute Nacht zusammen!
@Yannick FIL is Filipino 😃
Oops, thanks for the correction!
@haughty quiver rereading last nite's conversation, I noticed you mentioned a FLASH eraser. I did that and then installed CP 4.0.0 alpha 5 and TADA !
Fantastic!
thanks for joining in on the adventure of pioneering with a brand new board :)
I'm having so much fun 😃
@haughty quiver this is my modification with MidiUSB clock sync. The Arpeggiator only works when a clock is running: https://github.com/cbmainz/Adafruit_NeoTrellisM4/tree/master/examples/arpeggiator_synth
fantastic, thanks for sharing it, I look forward to playing with it.
I did't test it with audio synth only as a Midi device.
oh, is that merged into the main line of the code? is there still a way to make it run independently?
oh, I see, that's on your fork of it
it would be cool to add that in and have a software switch or even startup button to enable or disable clock sync
Yes, if I find time I would like to make a switch for different modes
I don't know if I find tome for this on the weekend.
I would like to make the code of the Arpeggiator not playing a Arpeggiator but a single note when pressing a button. Because than it would be very similar to the layout of a Novation Circuit. But I don't understand the code for the 'playArp' at the moment. And than of cause a switch for different Modes of playing (Arpeggiator or Scale Mode).
@haughty quiver would you use a button combination on the button matrix of the Trellis M4 or a external button?
I think you could do a startup button combo maybe to avoid adding parts?
Yes, this would be handy. But I have to learn more to make this code. I'm still learning programming in Arduino.
@haughty quiver is there a example somewhere of such a startup button?
Great question, I'll have to think if I can recall any.
I would probably do a check in the setup() for a button press and then set a variable based on that.
To store the choice between power downs? I'm not sure how you'd do that.
does the NeoTrellis M4 have the same NVRAM other Arduino boards do?
If so you could store it in there
@haughty quiver I updated my sketch on github:
https://github.com/cbmainz/Adafruit_NeoTrellisM4/tree/master/examples/arpeggiator_synth
Now, if there is a Midi Clock via USB, it will sync to it. Otherwise it will play to the internal clock.
The SAMD chips don't have EEPROM like the ATMEGA chips.
If you're using CircuitPython you can use a file in the flash file system. I believe you can do the same in C++, but I haven't tried it myself.
@odd stream I see. I modified the arpeggiator_synth witch is in C++ and I don't know how to store files on the flash file system.
I like to learn more about the startup button approach from @haughty quiver and then implement some config buttons on startup for sync on/off, clock devision, pattern select and so on. If this can be stored in the future, this would be a nice add on as well.
@dense marlin This might help https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-feather-m0-express-designed-for-circuit-python-circuitpython/using-spi-flash
oh, cool, thanks @odd stream I will have a look on this.

oooo, nice
That'd be rockin' with a metallic filament
Crushin' around the Christmas tree
a ninjaflex holiday... 🎵 🎄
LOL
How long did the star take to print with that layer height?
@waxen thistle about 30min for two
@rocky reef Not too shabby -- I was a bit confused, why was it better to do two at once? I heard it mentioned it was about the heat....
Is it better to have it go back and forth between them, to allow for cooling? I thought it was better to keep a print hot with continual heat & contact....
Im late. but im here!!!
We're making trees today @lean grail
Ohhhhhhhhhhh!!!! Fancy!!!!!
Nice!
Including crushable light up trees with ninjaflex.
[a sentence I never thought I'd say 10 years ago]
Hahahahaha I just got home from work @waxen thistle
Put it in a translucent star or ball, use it for countdown to new year, and blink like mad at midnight
@hard hollow lemme see that squeeeeshy tree!!!
Just that mount for the CPExpress in the base is awesome
Ohhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! Thats hecka fancehhhhhhh!!!!!
Who mentioned something about a countdown? 😉
I seeeeee a droneeeee!!!!!!!!
Woah! I'm PSYCHO!!! Errr, no, psychic. Actually, both if you ask anyone who knows me 😉
Also, I'm not jealous of that workshop. Nope. Not at all 😃
Same @waxen thistle my workshop is my bedroom and its a tiny cube.
You know, i ignored the LED animations on the ball -- mainly because they looked as if they were from the real ball. So my brain just tuned it out....until you mentioned it, and I was like....woah.
Oops.
LUKE! Stop blowing up the Death Star on stream!

That freaking scared me...!!!

Very cool.
Very nifty
That was way, way cool.
Glad I tuned in for this radio rebuild 😃 📻
Radio rebuild. 😉
Quick build I did this week since my left hand is partially out of order. Foot pedals from Noe&Pedro’s guide for control, shift, and alt.
@odd stream Cool.
Makes emacs usable with one hand.
Guide was tweaked to put 3 switches in the trinket as well as for modifier use.
Thanks to @pearl shoal for the suggestion.

@odd stream 👍
🐦 💥
Adding sound effects would be trivial.
I also make the same sound when I walk into a wall....and I see little birdies flying around my head too....
I want to see multiple TrellisM4 connected via I2C.
You could connect 2 with a STEMMA cable and play 2-player games
@sage aspen yep! i made the two pins I2C and also UART
so you can connect sensors, or do bidirectional comms
The "expansion" pads on the edges of the board are all in parallel and in parallel with the Stemma connector (based on the schematic anyway)
I'm assuming multiple ones can be put in I2C slave mode at different addresses, driven by one master (withe the USB connection).
How many different I2C addresses are available on it?
There's no option like on the 4x4 version.
Just pictured a wall of them.
It has an onboard MCU so it's not an I2C peripheral.
@eager sapphire Vintage bridge of NCC-1701
Exactly
@eager sapphire you'd load an i2c library and set the addres
Thanks
4 or 5 linearly (4x?) and make a guitar hero type controller 😃
not sure we have a samd51 i2cclient
keen -- NeoTrellis looks pretty slick, love the PJRC audio library usage
@open dune thanks! its a great library for chips with DSP support like the 'D51
yeah Paul did an amazing job on it
heh... you guys even making any money on this board? sheesh so nice and affordable! 😛
the community really likes to support open source hardware & they dig this design 😃 we've been sold out a lot of these whenever we get em in stock! plus the thousands sent out in adabox... its been popular, thank you everyone for your support!
squishy buttons r the best
Squishy colored buttons, no less
Crickit, Hallowing, M4 Trellis....been a very nice year. I'm sure I forgot a few stellar products too.
Is digikey/AD only sponsoring the adabox version?
I wasn't initially interested, but this turned out to be a lot of fun.
thanks @waxen thistle it's been
a year!
I'm thinking a minesweeper game would be fun.
@open dune now that it's "live" the analog branded PCBs are what will be in the store for stand-alone purchases too
Good idea dave. Different colors could represent the number of mines.
thanks @haughty quiver amazing!

@haughty quiver Thanks for an awesome unboxing video! Thanks to @open girder, @proper trench, & the entire adafruit team for an awesome Adabox and evening of shows!
Excellent unboxing @haughty quiver !
@proper trench I keep thinking it's time to move on to other hardware, then I have more neotrellis project ideas.
this was a fun one
ooh dave, you're gonna really like the ❓ next one
its a ❓ with a ❓ and also ❓
Playing with the Garmin LidarLite now... it's I2C.. what if I stuck it onto a neotrellis.....
you can build some fun ❓ - really take circuitpython to the next level
Is it a ❓ or a ❔ ?
❓ - subscribers get a bonus ❔
Well, that makes all the difference!
Ok now that’s what I call a “don’t ask...”
@proper trench Bring it!
I'm pretty sure I know what it will be already.
wait realyl!?
thanks everyone for coming by!
shoot, @sage aspen dont give it away 😃
it'll be our secret 😃
@waxen thistle already guessed. Chia pet.

@slow spire There's new stuff in the store, though!
its not out yet, so don't ask 😃
it will be grand, central to our offerings
LOL
i typed it too many times and now the word 'new' looks really weird.
Sweet! Yeah, I just am addicted to watching anything Adafruit being intro'ed live. "Oh look, here's a cute little new button!"
these jokes 🤣
Those new soft touch push buttons look nice.
ciao
Bye @proper trench bye all!
g'night @haughty quiver
I desoldered a bunch of similar buttons from a car stereo because I liked them.
BTW, I think the Grand Central product page could use a big heads up about shields and 5V vs 3.3V logic levels.
I'm gonna go play Trellis M4 music :)
Goodnight @haughty quiver
nite!
Have fun @haughty quiver.
I can just see people plugging in their old 5V shields into the Grand Central and wondering what's up. Hopefully not too much of that happens.
It will be similar to the Arduino Due in terms of Form Factor and being 3.3V.
They should work fine if the board is 3.3v and the shield is 5v.
I don't believe the Grand Central GPIO pins are 5V tolerant. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm sure there are some shields that would destroy it, some that just won't work, and maybe some that might work fine.
There are also probably some that will appear to work for a while, then the GC will suddenly stop.
I just answered a question on the forums about whether you could attach a solenoid directly to Raspberry Pi GPIO pins. So…
That does not sound like a good idea. You don't want a bunch of current flowing through those pins.
We were discussing a 3V-5V shield adapter on another channel. Maybe I should design it.
Well I couldn't stay up last night to see the unboxing show live or participate in the chat. But, please consider this contribution as a #hug-reports item also. Thank you @proper trench for designing and manufacturing such a great product. For me it ticked all the boxes, the M4 chip, LEDs and buttons, sound and the 'STEMMA'? I2C expansion possibilities. Just fantastic! Thank you also to @haughty quiver for all the inspiring videos and project ideas. I am (was completely at sea) now learning with both Python and about the world of synthesisers and excited by the potential to learn new things. The fun I have had playing with the TrellisM4 reminds me a lot of how I felt going to a computer club back in 1980. Without the resources of the internet, I learned from friends and books. Adafruit's commitment to learning and communities is brilliant.
was there ask for engineer?
@shell mason It was Adabox 010 unboxing last night
A short broadcast, around 40 minutes total? Typical highly polished John Park pre-recorded Adabox opening + a live Q&A and project demo afterwards.
That should be up on YouTube I'd imagine. It was nice.
If I remember correctly, JP should have a show today. [I might be wrong, so don't quote me]
i came from xmas party and was so tired as also its so late for me those shows
Hey, I think everyone here will say you have to take care of yourself first
🎉
It's nice all the video content is archived as VoD on youtube.
I try to catch shows when I can, but sometimes work runs late. Life gets in the way too. It just means I have something to look forward to later on that day or the following day.
And everyone here is pretty chill, you see something mentioned on the show -- ask away after the broadcast. 😃
thank you kindly @fallen siren that's really wonderful, so glad to hear of your excitement for it all!
Hello @waxen thistle !
How ya doing today man?
Pretty good. Soldering iron's warm. How about you?
A bit groggy, but overall pretty well. Watching a friend on Twitch help educate others with the dangers of online scams -- until Mr. Park goes online that is 😃
Also got a new NAS setup!
Which one?
Synology DS1618+ w/ 4x 10tb Ironwolf Pro drives (primary storage with a 2x raid parity) + 2x 10tb WD Elements external drives (backup targets)
Nice!
Hey everybody, are we waiting on a broadcast or just being sociable?
Music is up @haughty quiver
I hear music
hello !
Ok it must be showtime!
Music levels: -2 db peak, -9 db ave sounds great!
@inner spade How are you measuring this, by the way?
Voice levels: -2 db peak, -9 db ave good to go!
(using Audacity connected directly to stream audio)
..... 😢 wasn't a chia pet ....
@inner spade nifty 😃 I haven't done much audio work (need to learn 😃 )
I've been running a recording studio for about 15 years now. It's a gas!

Random thought --- I remember as a kid, the "Pound Puppies" had a christmas album, which was a bunch of dogs howling carols
@waxen thistle Ha ha. I remember that.
hello yall
Heya @gaunt plume !
This looks similar to what I just did with foot pedals.
The Tindie store is still open through the weekend
