That's a beautiful sunset
@open girder - during the Q&A - Ladyada's videos on Eagle are awesome. It's how I learned PCB layout. Yet I had to find a supplier & navigate that process (I use PCBWay and it works well). Do you guys have any desire/plans to add PCB service or partner with someone & have a standard path from your guides to a completed PCB?
@tired shale It uses CircuitPythons random.randint
@strange mantle Thanks!
@tired shale Not sure if that uses the SAMD51's true RNG.
That is so awesome to watch!!
Love the new OctoLapse
@odd stream Interesting, I was just joking though. I don't expect it to be truly random
@tired shale If it takes advantage of the hardware RNG, it would be.
Given my guess on Adabox X, I will have an AT project out of it π

@odd stream looks like something called yasmarang, as I expected, it's not using the true rng because that would be incompatible with other boards. https://github.com/adafruit/circuitpython/blob/master/shared-module/random/__init__.c
or play old windows 1.0 games right?
That picade would be a great giveaway

Adafruit CRICKIT HAT for Raspberry Pi https://www.adafruit.com/product/3957
Sometimes we wonder if robotics engineers ever watch movies. If they did, they'd know that making robots into slaves always ends up in a robot rebellion. Why even go down that path? Here ...
@tired shale @pearl shoal the seed for the random module uses hardware random when available
π©

It looks about the right size for the new Pi 3A
but is then pseudorandom
cool, thanks @rapid hornet
Gotcha - cool π
What headers are on that?
Looks like it's made for holding stacking headers through it?
No, the pi headers - they look like they can take stackers through them
I missed hearing some of that - will it include .h/.c/.cpp sources?
Q: How many of the RPi I/Os are left after the CrickHat takes what it needs?'
Almost all of them - they use i2c
Most? I think it just uses i2c and i2s
and you can still have more stuff on the i2c bus
The serial interface is a nice touch
fo sho
I assume they come with butter and napkins 'cause they're gonna sell like hotcakes
Plus, it's on a Pi, so you can use any language that gives you access to I2C (which should be all).
I can get rid of my pi->feather adapter now π
I don't know how I'd use the cereal interface, is it good for writing fruit loops?
In all seriousness, it's magically delicious. This is a slam-dunk product.
Understood, Dave - can always craft a .h with all the i2c addresses in it
Schweet.
@waxen thistle Lol.
Crickit: Kid tested, Maker approved.
Awesome, love it already.
snagged one at the start of the show (very excited π )
@pearl shoal With the work you and your team does, I'm excited to see what gets created....

M4 3D printer ?
Seriously should kick off new 3D printer firmwares
Does/will GrandCentral use the 6-pin ICSP header as its SPI connector (per the Uno R3 header faux-standard) ?
adding camera to that would be cool
Thanks for not answering that question that I didn't ask because it's-not-out-yet
Lol.
You guys are terrible at keeping secrets!
What is the combination for the vault -- I need to know now!
The combination to the vault is your Visa card number.
Secret = teaser
Repeating - during the Q&A - Ladyada's videos on Eagle are awesome. It's how I learned PCB layout. Yet I had to find a supplier & navigate that process (I use PCBWay and it works well). Do you guys have any desire/plans to add PCB service or partner with someone & have a standard path from your guides to a completed PCB?
Leeks!
Sure Phil, Sure. SUrrrrrre
Q: Will it ever be possible to have an Adafruit designed + made 3D printer at a friendly price? Has it ever been considered?
Is there a boost 'topology' best suited for a wearable project to power the Nth-Light Strip (PID 3683, 12VDC 65mA) from LiPo power? DigiKey has Charge Pump, Flyback, Forward Converter and SEPIC(?) options. Anything stand out as particularly good or bad? Thanks! (Don't have audio, watching stream when I get home!)
OSHPARK was great for doing our own feather wing
Non-serious [correction: very serious] question: which is your favorite side dish for Turkey Day?
@waxen thistle That is a very serious question.
Sweet potato casserole
Yeah! How do you cook your turkey? (I spatchcock mine)
Best side = blue cheese & bacon mashed potato
how do you cook your turkey well
with 3D printers
Made a turkey played Vetrex, did some bloggin', shipped off some Pi Hat designs - Happy Thanksgiving! ----------------------------------------- Visit the Ada...
hahaha
Cranberry sauce & stuffing FTW. Goes great over poutine, too.
if you don't spatchcock, you're wasting your own time
Ooo, one last question - what are you thankful for this year in the making world?
Excellent you can apply a little pressure to a manufacturer during the show LOL
All in one
I'm actually thankful for Dean Kamen for starting FIRST. It has given a great base for us to start from and they included service projects in their scoring for the contest - very smart.
I'm thankful for having such a wonderful community that I can be a part of.
I'm thankful for the Circuit Python community and the rest of the Adafruit Discord folks who've given me a super rad virtual hackerspace that's pushed me to do more and more
Good honest people. The quality & good character of our community.
Yes, the maker community is great.
I'm thankful for the kind, thoughtful community -- it's a warm, accepting place that is a welcome contrast to so many negative places out there.
I'm thankful for all the enthusiastic, patient users of CircuitPython and our other products.
And I'm thankful that you let us use your media - Ladyada spoke w/Penn State last week
I'm thankful for Adafruit, initially as a source of great parts, now as a creative output & thing to do.
Yeah, circuitpython = awesome
I'm thankful for CircuitPython and the community that helped get me to where I am now. I'm thankful for the opportunity to learn and join the Adafruit adventure.
Agreed RE: CircuitPython -especially the group on Discord - it's by far the most helpful channel
Iβm thankful for everything
I'm thankful for the non-judgmental side of the maker community; the one that patiently helps and maintains civility.

Important question about the ninjaflex @hard hollow : will it blend??

The future -- Blinka and friends as boards
@rapid hornet I think your camera is focused on your mic. That's why it's not focusing happily for you.
Ah well still. Your mic was super in focus π
great! π
If you ask me, focusing on the mic is a sound idea
If that GPS music device plays Bon Jovi, it'll keep telling you that you're halfway there.
Why do security people all have that same voice?
If you play The Proclaimers on that you'll always be at least 500 miles from where you want to be. π

@haughty quiver When GitHub Actions is fully out, this would be cool to use with it.
ooh, very cool @rapid osprey
@lethal lagoon is getting out of hand here.
I'm thinking you could have a couple of them, or some pages of buttons you can shift w accelerometer if you wanted to run lots and lots of shortcuts :)
Kittehs.
@lethal lagoon meow, meow!
cat sounds...who'da thunk it? π
@haughty quiver Accelerometer shift. You could have a cube.
@rapid osprey Hey!
Lady Meow Meow.
Nice creative use of the hallowing.
I just got their new Wireframe magazine about games and game development, it's really good, and also available as a free .pdf IIRC

Oooh, something to get amped up about
@rapid hornet lol. only avid customers see that immediately.
π
Tenori On, so cool!

@haughty quiver That's an AWESOME cart for the DS.
just tuned in in time to see an awesome glove for meow-touch!
I've got a video of my Tenori-On from 2007 if people would like to see one in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3lvsUpPR30
Some experimental tunes made on the first night of owning a Yamaha Tenori-On. I'm in no way musical and can't play any other instruments, but this seems real...
thanks for sharing everyone!!!

I cut my teeth on pulling things apart.
Hello
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
can never have too many perma proto boards, love those things
I've been very happy with the perma-proto boards. They're not much to look at you'd think -- "it's just a proto board, right?"....but when you use other ones that split, fall apart, delaminate, etc... Adafruit's version holds up like a champ.
Shocker glove with new stuff
@waxen thistle do it! super fun! we also call it harvesting π
I would love same day shipping on electronics π
harvesting protoboards right
I love that name @lethal lagoon -- very appropriate for the fall

@ivory kiln any of the boards should be able to run that. my quick look at the documentation suggests you could control it with the pulseio.PWMOut module. you'll need to read the documentation and write the code though; no library exists.

Interesting
@lavish patrol a couple other alternatives are the Elgato Stream Deck and the Infinitton. Both cost around $150, so this is project is a much more cost effective way to do it.

yay Quicksilver!

Hello !
Hello
I'm late ! I'll have to watch the video later
Yeah ! Launchers are cool !
I need to build one to work with OBS and iDJC
hello Yannic by press of the button
No idea how to make that work on linux though, but I'm sure I can figure that out eventually !
I believe it emulates a keyboard, so I think you would just enter some linux shortcuts
I'm subscribed ! My 1st Adabox π
Thanks John
Thanks @haughty quiver
I kinda hope the Adabox is a trellis. would be super cool!
Thanks @haughty quiver
thanks @sage aspen !
you're welcome
and thanks @haughty quiver for what I'm sure was a great show once again !
yes, I haven't tried it yet, but apparently Ubuntu has a very easy way similar to Windows taskbar, window key+1 launches first thing on taskbar,
Thanks @haughty quiver ! The Launch Deck will be a real time saver for KiCAD and my DAW, not just app switching.
let me know if anyone has a favorite hotkey app launcher for Linux
Yeah my goal is to emulate keys inside a running software, so it should be a piece of cake ! just have to send the correct keycode
Thanks for the tip there John! I didnt know that Windows + a number opened the program on that slot of the taskbar
yes, 1 through 0!
Well, actually, if the launcher can start OBS for me then it's even better !
OK, here will be the upgrade challenge if anyone gets excited about it -- add virtual pages of buttons to the Launch Deck that you access by tilting it left and right.
Nice idea
not very practical but very fun π
have the keys turn a certain color to indicate which page is active
that would be cool !
Or you shake it to send things to the trash. π¬
this shortcut is on the red page, this one on the blue page !
I mean, That doesnt sound tooooo hard to do John, though i dont know the tilting part so id just have it page using 2 specific buttons
@lavish patrol or rather, you shake it and all the shortcuts are randomly re-assigned and you have to guess where they are π
Useful Tool + Game in one.
Melissa, throw in Frustration tooo while youre at it lol
when it comes to silly ideas that make you loose a ton of time, I'm your guy ^^
Yeah, so don't let it fall off the desk.
lol
gosh darn it I missed the broadcast because I was sitting here playing with my TrellisM4
It should be available on YouTube immediately
yes I know but it just isn't the same somehow
That's true

A christmassy project : Ikea Ribba photo frame, some solar film for a mirror effect, a 32 x 32 RGB LED matrix, 1090 PNG files, and a raspberry pi to do the animation !
that looks great!
thanks @haughty quiver π
the camera doesn't give it justice though. it's much nicer in real life π
I'm familiar with the phenomenon of LEDs looking nicer in real life :)
ok I'm caught up now. Great show @haughty quiver and a cool project. You seemed really pumped today, either you had come straight from the gym or you are drinking way too much coffee.π
Haha, that's funny -- I think it was the thrill of knowing I could blow up my Wirecast session at any moment w one wrong HID USB keystroke. And some really good coffee.
Your enthusiasm (and great projects) is what keeps us coming back.
Thank you kindly! I'm a lifelong enthusiast of show and tell
@haughty quiver Without even opening the VoD, from reading the comments -- it sounds like you used the M4 Neotrellis as a DIY "Stream Deck" for mapping actions on one's computer/specific application. Probably as a HID with keyboard shortcuts?
Haha, awesomesauce. That's one of the things I plan on doing with the M4 trellis, and taking that code & tweaking it for a handheld version with a dual neotrellis PCB board.
Pair it with a wifi featherwing
Baby steps
[I'm irritated, they no longer make the etekcity "hook hub" for my non-smart wireless lighting setup... I think I have to figure out how to do it manually at the 433 MHz range]
@haughty quiver is it possible to have a single launch deck neotrellis be able to feed commands to multiple machines? Where can I find a recordind onyesterdays program?
should be "recording of yesterday's program"
its in adafruit youtube page at least

@smoky patrol I don't know of a cheap/simple way to use one USB device simultaneously on multiple computers. I found once company that sells a device for $500 that does! http://www.vetra.com/844Ukmtext.html Does anyone here have ideas on routing HID to two machines?
4 Port USB Keyboard and Mouse, or USB HID device Multiplier/Multicaster/Broadcaster sends, or broadcasts, keyboard and mouse data to up to four PCs simultaneously.
I imagine one way would be to add something small like a Trinket M0 and have the Trellis M4 send commands over UART to the Trinket M0 which is plugged into your second machine.
There are USB host adapter chips available, it seems like using a few of those and a USB capable microcontroller would do the trick.
While the Trellis M4 sends USB to the first one.
One such chip is the MAX3421E
some searching shows an old virtual KVM software solution for mac https://github.com/abyssoft/teleport and this one for Windows and mac and Linux https://symless.com/synergy
Virtual KVM for OS X. Contribute to abyssoft/teleport development by creating an account on GitHub.
Synergy combines your desktop devices together into one cohesive experience. It's software for sharing your mouse and keyboard between multiple computers on your desk. Works on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Raspberry Pi.
Although I'm not sure of those allow a single HID command to go out simultaneously to multiple machines or not
Trinket M0 can operate as USB host using Arduino. See the example USBHost | KeyboardController. The TM0 must be powered via its USB pin.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I have used Synergy and have it on my systems and it works great but I have an idiosyncratic setup.
I will look into some of the suggestions and let you all know if I get something to do what I want. Since I have a trinket M0, I will start with that.
@haughty quiver Synergy doesn't actually let you connect two devices to two physical machines -- it's desktop-sharing software. Host machine has the keyboard and mouse, sends commands to other machines via network. All machines must be running Synergy. Not expandable past keyboard and mouse.
OK, got it. Thanks.
@fathom sparrow
@smoky patrol -- excellent. I think my approach to test that would be two Trinket M0 boards talking to each other over serial, and a button on the primary one. Press button, primary Trinket M0 sends a USB HID command to computer one and a message over serial to second Trinket M0, which sends the same USB HID command to computer two.
@haughty quiver - I want the behavior to be different on both machines so I will have the trellis send the machine A commands (machine identified A buttons) to machine A and send the machine B commands over serial to the M0 connected to machine B. Are there any problems with this scenario?
That sounds good @smoky patrol

Good afternoon all you wonderful people. Ready for some awesome blatherskite today!
heh, yes!
debates googling blatherskite π
It's a phrase I happily borrowed from Ducktales (the original cartoon). Gizmoduck's activation keyword was "blatherin' blatherskite!"
If I had to trace back my DIY inspiration -- if I pointed to media, it would be Gyro Gearloose on Ducktales (making crazy contraptions)....and the 1936 cartoon short "Christmas Comes But Once a Year" where the protagonist makes toys for an orphanage out of random, commonly available household items.
loved Ducktales, but don't remember the term being used. i barely remember Gizmoduck.
The rebooted Ducktales they've released last year features Lin Manuel Miranda as Gizmoduck.
With THE DOCTOR (David Tennant) as Scrooge and DONNA (Catherine Tate) as Magica DeSpell.

Is there a difference other design on the Trellis M4 from some weeks ago and the version with the digikey logo?
@haughty quiver it works on all, but you can't mix the board types. e.g. can't use a Trellis uf2 on a Feather M0 uf2; memory locations are different.

@young adder yes, for sure you can use Trellis M4 as HID device to send keystrokes via USB. My Launch Deck project last week did exactly that! https://learn.adafruit.com/launch-deck-trellis-m4/overview
You can also have it type full paragraphs out for you if you like, but I didn't include that in the guide.
@haughty quiver oh yes ! Last week's project ! I knew I had seen it done somewhere π
here's a related project https://learn.adafruit.com/the-foul-fowl-keyboard-injection-payload-gemma-m0
you don't have to use it for evil however! you can have canned commands, email responses, etc. ready to go on different buttons for example
Is there a .uf2 files for the audio visual filter some were?
I plan on using it to send keyboard shortcuts to OBS to switch scenes, add edit points, etc..
super use for it!
@dense marlin i'm working on the guide right now, should be out tomorrow or Monday.
okay, I just realized, as my Adabox is not jet there, I have not all components anyway.
I play around with the Arp
The arp from the library example makes some background noise, is this normal?
Maybe it is a ground noise from powering via USB.
I'll test it out again here, I don't think I had noise w the arp
Ah, OK, I do hear a bit of hiss using the synth mode (not MIDI mode). It's the same w USB battery and wall supply, so I don't think its a ground thing.
@dense marlin So that I can recreate your setup, are you using a TRS or TRRS plug for audio output?
Hi @inner spade I use a TRS plug
Thanks. The Trellis has an interesting TRRS arrangement to support the mic input that uses a floating ground -- that allows dual use of the mic input for a control switch. Don't know if that could be a contributing factor (shouldn't). This will be an opportunity to learn! I'll be looking into this tomorrow. @dense marlin @haughty quiver
Oh good point, I hadn't thought of that -- It may be a good test to try two sets of earbuds one TRS and one TRRS and see if it changes.
I think i have a TRRS breakout adapter somewhere that I can use to try some things. @inner spade @dense marlin
@haughty quiver @dense marlin I'll also check the stored sample levels and the software mixer parameters. It could potentially be due to a low output level. That can happen with linear (summing) mixer algorithms that set channel volumes conservatively low to avoid output clipping.
@dense marlin @haughty quiver The tests I performed this morning appear to be mostly power supply -related. The noise decreased from about -34db peak (relative to a single note arp peak) to -39db when moving to an isolated battery without any digital circuitry. The noise spectrum changed as well indicating quite a bit of bleed-through from the host computer. Compared to running the ARP code, placing the Trellis M4 into boot mode caused the noise level to decrease when powered by USB. The noise essentially disappeared when in boot mode on the isolated battery, probably because the DAC output pin was disabled (high-impedance state).
My guess is that we're seeing power source bleedthrough when the M4's DAC is enabled. Given the spectra, it doesn't seem to be caused by something in the ARP code such as the tone generator or mixer because of the high-frequency components.
ARP code: USB-powered idle noise spectrum measured on the left channel output.
ARP code: Battery-powered idle noise spectrum measured on the left channel output.
I know I will feel foolish for asking but...what is ARP?
@fallen siren Sorry about using the acronym. It's the arpeggiator example project for the NeoTrellis M4. https://learn.adafruit.com/neotrellis-arpeggiator-synth
Ah haven't got to that one yet, thanks. I have had my TrellisM4 since the 22nd of last month. It is the first product I have purchased direct from Adafruit. I live in the UK and the shipping costs + import duty are quite high. No complaints though I think it is great that Adafruit do international shipping. Anyhow the TrellisM4 ticks all the boxes for me and I'm having a blast playing with it.
Yeah, the NeoTrellis M4 is a super design and implementation. Its STEMMA interface is very flexible for interfacing with a variety of devices and equipment, particularly for some of my Eurorack synth projects.
Pretty lights, too.
Just wish it could be a USB host, too...
BTW, is that a TTY35 in your profile pic? Nice.
... or 33?
Yeah I was going to add I love the LEDs too. I know v little about synthesisers but the 80s were my 16-25 decade.
I am embarrassed to say I don't know the make/model of the TTY. I found the picture somewhere online and am using it (w/o permission!) because it looks very much like the first "computer" I ever used back in 1975/6. My Dad was on UK/US military exchange. We were living in Montgomery, AL for a year and Dad brought home a TTY very much like the one in the picture. We connected to a USAF mainframe somewhere - Ma Bell, acoustic coupler modem (1200/300 baud ?). I played a lunar lander simulator on it - I was 11 or 12 years old and I thought it was the greatest thing ever.
Nice. I used to work on them after college, back in 19(ahem). They were being slowing replaced by more modern devices, but the company I worked for still had dozens of them, mostly used to capture research data on the paper tape punch. I remember lots of oil and patience required.
Most were 110baud. The older ones were 72baud, if I recall.
I attended a Sixth Form college in 80/81 that still had a couple of terminals with paper tape punch/readers and I used them but I did most of my course work on Commodore Pets.
TTYs, Pets, Apple II -- very transformational devices at the time, weren't they? I'm really glad that we've moved past them, though.
Yes and no. The BBC Micro launched in England in 1982 with the Model A and Model B (if you had the money). That is where the Raspberry Pi got it's model names from. As I understand it the first ARM processor was developed as a coprocessor project on the BBC Micro at Acorn in Cambridge. When the Acorn Archimedes came along they were amazing and everything with an ARM processor now traces its heritage back to those machines.
Indeed. I appreciate the architectural strides and milestones that formed what we have in-hand today. Looking forward to the next generation, too.
Definitely. I just like computers, microcontrollers, SBCs, consoles, anything really. I count myself lucky to have been around to play with so many different machines. And yes I'm looking forward to what comes next too. I have a not quite five year old daughter and I get to experience the excitement all over again with her.
It's interesting you should be talking about background noise and USB. I was recently having a lot of trouble with noise on my mixer. It was a combination of ground loop and 5V noise. The solution was to isolate all of my audio gear from the PC's USB power (via a separate 5v supply) and an iFi Circuit iDefender 3.0. (I may have been able to do this other ways)
@young adder Did you get anywhere yet with making a memory game for the trellis? I was bored last night so I had a go at it. There's just a few polishing touches left to add.
@jagged aspen That's a good solution. For in-studio and field audio recording, I've used a combination of power supply isolation/substitution and audio signal transformer isolation techniques, depending on the situation. Once all that was needed was a ferrite bead on the USB cable. In that case, it was a noisy external power supply.
@odd stream I don't have a neotrellis yet ! Hopefully it shouldn't be long before I get one π
@young adder Did you get an Adabox? I've heard from people who have gotten theirs already.
