c ya @haughty quiver !
Thank you, John!
@haughty quiver Thanks for another awesome show!
thanks for a great show once again
ty
Ikea as raw materials for maker projects!
That synth's song reminds me of the opening to Super Mario Bros 3 airship theme....
@inner spade yep ! i've used square photo frames for many projects π
The NeoTrellis idea makes a very simple user interface. Nicely done!
plenty of space in those !
@inner spade: i was looking at the wrong channel on my mixer; indeed reading 20dB lower than nominal as it was referencing output and not the youtube stream....
A neotrellis plugged to a Raspeberry Pi zero configured as a gadget (seen as a keyboard from the PC) and you get a nice interface to send commands to OBS or a music composer software
@eager sapphire That's what I figured. I'm looking directly at the stream audio.
@waxen thistle Custom. Pretty simple Trinket M0 + custom PCB inside.
wait, is it over already?
I'm diggin' the fit and finish to them
The mixer said it was looking at raw WAVE input, but it certainly wasnβt; I used a reference -6dBFS wave file and saw it was being a bit shy
@waxen thistle The guts.
nice!
Source for the aluminum box?
Hammond (mfg) through DigiKey. It's a small guitar pedal stomp box.
Hammond: Supplier to Guitar DIY Pedal and Vape DIY builders everywhere.
Nice - thanks,need a few of those
Thanks to @haughty quiver and @cinder wind , I'll be using USB connectors and terminal adapters for future versions. What a great idea!
The 4-pin mini DIN is okay, but not very reliable.
Those DINs are the old Apple-style connectors?
I'm running out of micro controllers.. I'll have to replenish my stock !
@eager sapphire The old Apple and IBM keyboard-style.
Roger that
Those are also used on my Icom equipment, so saved a bit of cash by just salvaging old keyboards/mice for the radios
Now, i can coil them.
Yeah. I used them 'cause I had some left over from pre-historic times.
<looking for stuff to coil>. <stares at catβs tail>
Trying to resist coiling everything now. Must. Resist.
<reconsiders>
Yes
Especially if you buy a 10 foot cable so that itβll reach exactly 10 feet. Coil it and....not so much
RJ-45 jacks as interconnects are also pretty cool because everyone has Ethernet cables hanging around. Too bad they are so huge though
RJ-12?
I have stock RJ cables but no crimping tool. Most of my RJ cables aren't very flexible, though. Maybe if I coil them...
I have some flat RJ-45 cables that are very nice, but I think they actually may suck as Ethernet or Neopixel cables π
I finally bought a crimping set for ethernet cables as I kept needing assorted/odd/short/long sizes, and the prices for cables then were a bit much. Really handy to just build one when needed.
Also a biiiiig roll of cat 6, paid too much for it but....
Came with a tool for stuffing wires into the jacks, too. Works well, recommended. Just keep the jacks and plugs in stock, and youβre done
I found that my big roll of RG-6 and Cat5+ kept showing up in pieces in every project. Had to give the spools away to the local makerspace so that I could use silicone wire.
@inner spade Very nifty π
Nice, a plus for both you and the maker space
But Iβm always running short on coax; Iβd be hard-pressed to give any of that away.
Especially this LMR-400; got a great deal on it from Universal Radio
Understand. I won't give away my bulk RG174/u spool!
Ok so youβre not crazy
Selectively, perhaps.
@inner spade Your pre-labeled images -- are these part of a guide?
Nope, just for my own use.
Very slick, I have to say. excellent fit and finish, and labeling too
Thanks. It's been a passion of mine. I did write a general "front panel" guide for the learning system this year.
I remember seeing that (to be fair, i haven't dug into it because....sigh....time). But my first immediate reaction was "woah. purdy."
Out of all the first reactions one could have, that's not too shabby πΈ
I can live with "purdy." Thanks!
I'm a big supporter of workmanship/craftsmanship. There's a time and place for an irreverent cardboard design....but to really turn heads, a beautiful fit and finish will usually beat out a bunch of extra half-implemented features.
Agree. I like to take my time and enjoy the handwork part of the project -- it's therapy after <ahem> stressful years in industry.
@inner spade do you print your own PCBs ?
I have, but am an OSH Park purple junkie now.
Particularly after switching to SMT for almost everything.
Good luck, @young adder . Fortunately for me, OSH Park is just 3 hours drive from here so shipping rates and delivery times are wonderful.
Thank you ! ^^
@young adder Aisler might be an option. They're in Germany.
@young adder How are you using those Ikea frames? Do you have some photos of your projects?
soon @haughty quiver make clamps for that ikea lamps
@inner spade Yes I do use those frames !
That's an infinite mirror, using DotStars and a feather M0
And that's a pong clock, using a Feather M0, some miniature 8x8 LED matrix with MAX7219
Well, those are awesome but I recommend you don't shake them like a polaroid.
@young adder Excellent! I'll keep those in mind. Nicely done.
Thank you ^^

Hi folks
These silicon ribbon cables are awesome.
The spools of individual wires are great as well.

Hello AdaWorld
Hi there, everyone.
Afternoon all.
Does the Mad Hatter hat use ROHS lead-free solder?
Well, that is a hat
I knew @haughty quiver would not disappoint tonight
I remember in the '80s, using IBM mini-computers which came with shortcut boards off to the side.

@leaden trail part of my motivation is also that keyboards don't have near enough F-keys these days...
Happy HALLOWEEN all!
@haughty quiver 's stream tomorrow will be showing off cool things. I'm expecting it'll just be an hour showing ice cubes melt.
@unreal oxide Have you thought about using an elgato stream deck? It's not a satisfying as a DIY solution, but the LCD screen keys that can change the image....it's a swell toy.
β Noe, Pedro -- if we find a missing hand, we're blaming you π
It's raining lightsabers. That sounds terrifying.
I love this tiny little Z-machine!
This is seriously cool.
I threw it together this morning and have been playing ... memories!
It would be fun to play Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy on it embedded in a Hitchiker's Guide.

@waxen thistle i do like the idea of custom images on the keys...
I printed the LED trampoline itsybitsy case and put it in that... Zork in a matchbox.
it's sized for my daughter, so doesn't fit me too well -- for her there's a strap inside that distributes the weight a bit better.
Q: NeoPixel strips -- do i need a resistor for CP Classic and CPXpress?
@unreal oxide Take a look at their site, read users reviews and documentation -- and my 2 cents is to wait for Black Friday "week". I got mine for sub $100 usd last year.
right on, i'll have a look.
That is a pile of wires. That's how every good project starts, right?
techsondabeach - it's a good idea. I'd have to go look at the one I use, but it's in the NeoPixel Uberguide.

@open girder THIS IS AMAZING
Woah, PT should get an "As Seen on Show & Tell" sticker. Email support@adafruit.com and they will send one for you. There should be space on the back of that awesome case for it!
All the nostalgia sounds.
Wow huge rush of nostalgia, all mixed together
I remember that one and that one and that one and that one and
nothing but bad luck every time i try to show! ....sorry guys
too many associations with all those noises
I'll be honest, when @open girder plugged it in, I thought "Why did the computer... OH!"
thanks for sharing everyone!!
@kindred ore It seems like your internet connection in your bathroom... is a little crappy.
i dont think you could even see that the middle pumpkin did have pi eyes
just all the sudden ...lol
@river peak @kindred ore Yeah, that bathroom's internet connection really...stinks.
We feel your pain, my workshop gets wonky some days. No idea why either.
hehehe and then some
Might be because of the 2 foot brick wall and whole apartment between it and the AP. [in my case]
Maybe my Hallowe'en project will be finished next week - at least I'll be ready for next year.
i never use google plus or hangouts other than here ...dont think it likes me
@hollow lion now that is preparation! π
@hollow lion Maybe I'll have my neopixel punkin done by next year. too.
i'll post a vid tonight on my youtube ... search for zbones halloween if u wanna see
@muted mesa Well, and a week that doesn't bear repeating, which prevented getting work done. But all is well now, except not having an ever-so-cool Hallowe'en hat.
sorry to hear about the week-that-shall-remain-nameless. those are no fun. π¦
@hollow lion totally my project too!!!!!! I think Halloween needs to start in April not August!
@simple goblet That is a fine plan - let's remind each other next April.! The world is so full of interesting (not always in a pleasant way) things that projects you want to do get short shrift.
All year is halloween. We call them prop makers π
EVA foam + neopixels + PLA extruded nuggets of goodness
and silicone wire. Spools of silicone wire.
cosplay==halloween year 'round
but nows when we have pumpkins
well my band dude thought my project was awesome non-the-less and sending him updates -- next time however - if making a surprise for a band you need to invite them over and practice in the garden first -- computer speaker on max doesn't quite work! π
Print one of @split gazelle's pumpkins. PLA/ABS is rather resistant to bacterial decay.
Lights are off, door closed, some candy left so bring on Ask the Engineer!, Happy Halloween all!
Pumpkins are easy to grow if you have room, but they take a lot of room. I ended up with a plant that seemed to grow about a foot a day (and no pumpkins, because a critter ate the blossoms, darn it).

....this is amazing. I'm overwhelmed at what this can do!
NeoTrellis M4 Acrylic Enclosure Kit https://www.adafruit.com/product/3963
@simple goblet not vinegar - it will corrode stuff. You could try rinsing with distilled water and then air dry, maybe with a fan
Isopropyl alcohol would displace any water in the electronics. and it will dry quickly too
Yeah, as @paper peak said. Vinegar (Sometimes + salt) is used to eat away corrosion, but it has to be quickly neutralized with baking soda + water so that it doesn't continue eating. And then you'd have to clean that residue off...
@paper peak lemon salt water - i'm thinking that cleans copper...really annoyed with the guy that said he just 'hosed it down'
I'd definitely go with rubbing alcohol as @lean grail said

Q?: Are I2C devices PCB only devices or can they be located at the end of a cable? I would like to have a single temp/humidity sensor with cable length about 10 to 20 feet long. Is that possible and what should I plan for to accomplish this? Is there a maximum length?
i2c means inter-integrated circuit and was not meant for such distances. It can be done but has difficulties. totally forgot where we were ;)
Gotcha, thank you.
@open girder This question is from @rare shore (Who wasn't able to attend): Many of the eagle files for Adafruit products have traces that seem much larger than necessary, is this because of production limits or are there reasons they should be so big?
Q: any plans for a CircuitPython port to the Huzzah32?
@river peak Thanks, i was just looking that up but you beat me to it
do you sell fuse wire or is that something i can just make?
I've been out of the loop for a bit. Is the Mega still in the vault, don't ask yet?
NXP, at least, and probably TI sells I2C bus extenders
thick traces... definitely better
You need something to help drive the capacitance over longer connections
Q: my solder tip is the tiny one - are they supposed to heat at the tip - it seems togo only on the side?
ok thanks
@merry gulch Here's the i2c extender from Sparkfun that LadyAda mentioned: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/14589
Q: Can we ask when we can start asking...?
OK! Thanks. π
Pretend this is a question about something that isnt out yet and is top Secret
@fallen rivet we won't do ESP32 anytime soon. we'll be focusing on using it as a wifi module first
@rapid hornet so that's the connectivity strategy for the ATSAMx1 boards (rather than Atmel, etc solutions). Seems like that's where Arduino is also going with the Uno WiFi Rev2.
Q Instead of I2C on the end of a cable is there a different standard to use instead? Seems like the good sensors are I2C.
which will be out last June
Q: on HalloWing if a friend put arduino code on does she need tor eflash it back or if useing mu she will have the orig that shipped on the board?
@fallen rivet ya, think so. without usb its hard to use as a primary mcu
Is there a serial switch/button that can be chained together to allow hundreds or thousands of buttons on a microcontroller?
@river peak Have you used that i2c extender?
So learning python & circuit python is basically the same then?
@waxen thistle I have not. LadyAda mentioned it in response to the question, I simply looked it up
@ivory kiln thats the goal
@dawn bramble great, thanks. the price is right, even to throw all of those cycles away (although power, not so much). ty
@rapid hornet should have been, misaddressed above

@river peak thanks a lot, this will indeed change how I design boards
Happy to be of help!
@river peak I don't design boards, and I found their reasoning to be sound -- I learned something new π (which wasn't a lesson derived from a personal failure -- a refreshing change of pace)
I definitely wasnt going to get 'board houses say they can do 6/6 mil but you'll have a lot of duds' out of calculations. So oneoffs you can somewhat safely use 6/6mil, but anything you're thinking about producing it'll end in tears
It all comes down to cost vs. yield.
rather than determining the electrical appropriateness of a given set of parameters
Well, as we all know, you're going to get non-working units. No matter what you do, in any manufacturing, you'll have waste and defects.
Processes like LEAN and Six Sigma help reduce those issues. Good companies obviously have higher yields, and can command a higher selling price of their products.
But with any business, you have to set an acceptable rate of waste/loss. Restaurants throws away spoiled foodstuffs, retail accepts a certain percentage of theft, and electronics products will have some DoA.
Doesn't matter if it's an overseas discount manufacturer or tightly controlled in-house production for NASA. You mitigate your DoA & losses by designing around failure points -- larger traces, for example.
Yea, but also none of those factors are linear, there are different factors and rates that have disproportionate impact. What I'm takimg from Lady Ada's answer is under 10mil, failures are substantially more common, because the house "can" do 6mil, but only in the technical sense
An example of that is intel, they've been making 14nm nore size processors for years, but they cant get saleable yields at 9nm, they spend twenty years reducing the process size at a reliable tempo, but somewhere in these 5nm the difficulty goes from "oh god why" to the sound of demons crying
Taiwan Semiconductor 'has' 9nm process, because as I understand it their definition of node size works out as 9nm being about 11nm in the way Intel defines node size
Exactly -- just because it can be technically produced at 6mil, doesn't mean it's the best idea if a successful yield is a priority. Now, if the 6mil was because of a technical limitation -- well, depends on your overall cost tolerances.
6mil is substantially easier to route around in small spaces than 10mil
under some conditions you can fit 2 6mil traces between 0.1" spacing pins, so you can fit 4 through on a 2 sided board; but you're definitely only going to fit 1 per side at 10mil
I feel like this has continued too long for this channel, but we're generally finished anyway so.... victory
Good afternoon all you wonderful people!
Hello!
Hi!
Good afternoon (well, it is here)!
Hello everyone, did you all survive the sugar rush?
π¬
We live in an apartment bilding with a minimal amount of children in it. We can easily skip the entire trick-or-treat thing.
I could have used more kids this year, too many left over.
Last night was the lowest turnout headcount-wise, but the costumes were well above the previous years!

you guys remember Surface Table?
yeah I got to play with one briefly at a conference
with bunny or what you want it had nice way to show and make apps you made to affect characters top of table
Perhaps a reed switch and magnet for the on/off switch?
you could perhaps make similar as surface table yourself
@haughty quiver Thanks again for another awesome show!
great show!
Need lots of talcum powder to remove that from the mold. π
thanks much all
And thank you @haughty quiver
great show @haughty quiver
Enjoyed the show. Good job as usual @haughty quiver
Thanks, go make some things glow with terrifyingly bright LEDS :)
Thanks! My Prop-Maker and blinding LED are supposed to arrive today.
oh good!
Excellent show.
@flint cradle if I remember correctly it use ir sensors and some more plus projector the boxy surface table
will your Christmas lights extravaganza benefit from Prop-Maker action?
... for the Grandma Got Run Over exhibit, yes.
soon @haughty quiver make mystery table
@haughty quiver Cool show. I like how you added connectors to the prop wing. I just had to rework mine to use that technique.
excellent. I wanted to get it low profile to fit through the foot/leg.
I got pulled away for a good chunk of the show -- had it on, quietly in the background. I'll have to rewatch the vod π
@haughty quiver Did you also use low-profile headers and pins?
I have them on a couple of space-sensitive projects.
I think you could shave another mm or two if you soldered the two boards together w long male pins and then trimmed the excess.
a bit more permanent-ish.
Will a magnet + reed switch work through the thickness of the vinyl?
it's a great idea, I think it would work very well.
I've used them quite a bit in magic illusions/tricks.
I also recall you using a hall-effect in a radio project. That could be nice for brightness control, etc.
Especially when paired w the push-button power switch.
or can you detect touch feven that thick vinyl
Oh yeah, the push on, push off switch?
Capacitive touch? I think that would be tricky.
this one @inner spade https://www.adafruit.com/product/1400
Yeah. I think I have a couple of those.
this was two years ago now, but IIRC I triggered that board w the reed switch to turn the power on and off on the rest of the project since it was sealed up in a wooden box.
Batteries charge w inductive coil.
i was thinking if you use IR sensor what then see finger pressure
As usual, your workshop sparked some ideas. Thanks!
hi to all!
I'm new on the server...what is this?? A sort of forum about adafruits/circuit python
?
thanks
@rose sequoia Pretty much anything to do with Adafruit and making. Various channels for various areas. E.g. this one is primarily for live chat during the streams (3d hangouts, show&tell, ask an engineer, John Park's workshop, those are the regular ones believe).
@rose sequoia It's more like IRC or Slack than a forum.

Hi, all.
good morning!
@rocky reef Good afternoon.
'morning!
hello!
hello
morning
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
YT is buffering, Twitch seems clean
@odd stream You da man. π¬
@lavish patrol Just trying to pay the bills.
This weekβs #help-with-3dprinting project on Adafruit Learning System
https://learn.adafruit.com/neopixel-headlight
so, so shapey
Love it!
That's a really cool print
as this 3D Hangout is in N7 day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjJcP-od8hw
What does N7 mean to you? Our N7 Day video is a look backβand a glimpse at the future of Mass Effect. #N7Day
@rocky reef think N7 badge to that bikelight
Lol. That 3D printer in the background is really going for it.
Is that what the background noise is? The printer?
Noe and Pedro have many 3D printers in background and some are even working during 3D hangout
@glad pasture I think so. Either that or someone's doing aerobics...
LOL
yes, the prusa and s5 are printing away
...or 3D Pilates. π
haaha sounds painful!
Love that filament!
I use a community 3D printer and they don't have that. π¦ But, I will make suggestions!
I just want to make this build so bad!
I'd love an itsybitsy m4 part π
Why the MK2? Why not an MK3?
I've found the Hatchbox wood filament doesn't do that... but it doesn't change color on temp changes either
@rocky reef Do you watch #live-broadcast-chat or #help-with-3dprinting during this show?
@split gazelle π
great show guys!
Thanks guys. π
cya
thanks for hanging out folks!
@pearl shoal i thought we did but aw well
oh funny that was hatchbox
wait for moment I am in middle of calibrations
Really! I've never seen it do that.
It leaves little zits where it starts each layer, but no stringing
I'll print something & show you
@pearl shoal awesome thanx! what settings?

The one on the left is woodfill with stain (and distressing)
I use a standard PLA profile at 240C and 70mm/sec (Simplify3D)
Those are Rock/Paper/Scissors/Lizard/Spock dice π
oh have you tried one with a bunch of "islands" - its all the retractions that made it stringy @pearl shoal
So, I decided to try the antler design just to see... it's my first time w/.6mm nozzle and wood and it does string more... but nothing like what you showed (yet at least)
So bummed. Made a video showing the results but discord rejected it (and didnβt save it)
Good evening all of you wonderful people!
@pearl shoal Thanks Bill, appreciate the share. Pedro forgot to mention our string is most likely from the Octolapse plugin for OctoPrint β The toolhead moves away, parks the bed, takes a snaps shot, and repeats for every layer. That's gotta contribute to all the long strands of hair π
Gotcha - I'll try to get better pictures... it was exactly what I expected, but Discord didn't let me save the file for other avenues (YT)
I had a failure (you can see it in the pic) - not a big deal, but I think if I switched "external infill" to "concentric" it would be solved - will try that on the other antler part
And sometimes you get this instead π #failart
It is always nice to see failures, and know I am not alone :0)
Though, that seems to be more like abstract art than a failure
Yeah, that might get a frame
π
@rocky reef @hard hollow hereβs a better pic of what my wood fill usually looks like

@waxen thistle good to know! i've seen all the previous doctors except for for peter capaldi
There are other doctors besides Tom Baker??
I was there on day 1 (1963).
If you don't watch Capaldi's run, you'd only miss one or two small references to "formerly being an angry Scottish man".
As someone who watched Doctor Who wayyyy back in the day, this new season is keeping it fresh, for sure.
hiya @dense ether!

Tangentially related to avoiding scams -- Microsoft, MalwareBytes, Dell, the IRS, anyone's "refund department" will never call you with a "expired warranty/virus alert/update to serial key/tax return error".
Never give your personal information, and no one should threaten you or demand payment with iTunes/Steam gift cards.
Are you sure it wasn't cramped from playing with FutureKitty?
Lol.
The IRS in particular: government correspondence is always by registered mail.
@river peak That was a while back.
@void widget is absolutely right. Very rarely they will ever call you, and it'll be pre-arranged typically. And if you have ANY doubts, ask questions. Lots of questions. Scammers don't like that.
Some of those IRS scammers can be very aggressive. Playing on fear.
Ladyada, make that metro with a 1284 π
@magic osprey @void widget absolutely correct. they never make phonecalls. always by registered mail.
@dense ether Fear and greed are two of the most powerful motivators.
@river peak Was it you that I was talking about tiny keyboards with?
the one I get lately is "I hacked your computer and have video from your webcam, send bitcooin"
@odd stream Fear of missing out free tacos?
@odd stream Yes it was!
Oooo, look at that sunset. I miss NYC!
@void widget I got one of those. "I sent this from your e-mail, so you know I actually hacked you!" and then contained generic info that would work for most people, but... super wrong for me.
@river peak in my case, I am..uh, what webcam π My webcam is on the studio PC
@river peak Iβm working on the keyscan code now.
@void widget Exactly! My webcam is... currently pointed at my ceiling. I'm not even sure it's connected.
@odd stream Ooooooooo
@river peak @void widget "oh, you have video of the backside of a sticker covering my webcam lens? Enjoy!"

In short, to avoid scammers -- and please, share this with your family/friends/grandparents:
Never trust anyone who cold calls you -- never give out a scrap of personal information.
Demand to call them back via their official number (which you find yourself on Google/their legit business website).
And ask questions -- scammers get frustrated the more you try to poke holes into their story -- if it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't.
