Fantastic color and sound effects!
this last one is awesome 😃
multiple, light coats...that's the key!
With all the hallowing's exposed wires, it'd really go well with Kylo Ren's crossguard lightsaber (which has a very rough, exposed design).
🖐 <-- If anyone finds this, let me know! I lost one up on Bespin. ~Luke
What's the advantage of using NeoPixels over DotStars for example ?
Phil "Foley" B
How long would the battery last?
I know you're talking about the lightsaber but I'm interested in making the CPX version of the paintstick you posted. But I noticed that there doesn't appear to be a way to change the speed that you mentioned. Also, I've suggested several coding changes that I think could make this even better. I know you said in your tweet about it that Phil Burgess did the code. I was wondering if you could point him to a post I put on the forums to see if my requests are possible It's here: https://forums.adafruit.com/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=140222 And thank you!!

RGB Matrix HAT + RTC for #RaspberryPi https://t.co/yEIm5lfIdL
My calculations approximates 20 to 30 minutes of runtime with the 500ma/H battery.

@haughty quiver Thanks again for another awesome show!
did you see my question?
thanks @haughty quiver ! Great project one again
👍 John!
Thanks @haughty quiver. Very well done.
thanks @haughty quiver! we need a "war cry" for that unicorn sabre. "Balancing the force, one rainbow twinkle at a time." [too long] 😄 🦄
My runtime calc of 20 to 30 minutes is rough but for a 500maHr sounds about right considering the current draw.
@queen kayak just saw it now -- good catch, haven't updated it for speed changes on CPX other than the SPEED variable in code.
Thanks for doing the math @heavy siren :)
Great show @haughty quiver , the diffusion method is something I might use for one of my projects currently in the works.
@heavy siren super, glad that may be of help
@haughty quiver Actually, the computer did the math, I just punched in the numbers. 😃
even better
@haughty quiver ok ty. I don't know if the wishlist of improvements i put in my post is possible, but hopefully it is. i think it could make it much more powerful and user friendly.
I think one of the 2200mAh cylindrical batteries would be excellent for this and then give you a couple of hours runtime @heavy siren
@haughty quiver Oh yes, that battery would definitely last that long. What a great way to tire out the child for bedtime. 😃
@haughty quiver with the code in it's current iteration, when you boot, does it automatically start playing the first image that is coded? and then if you have more than 1, does a5 play the next one? just trying to understand how i could apply it if changes aren't possible
Thanks for the suggestions @queen kayak
@haughty quiver yvw, i'm just hoping someone can code it. far above me unfortunately 😩
I'm going to try to add the button speed controls to the CPX version @queen kayak
@haughty quiver great ty!
@haughty quiver I hope the notification for the Hallowing being in stock comes before midnight tonight or MWOWM won't work. Tried to include it with my $200+ order last night but couldn't. I really like that Hallowing and want to play with it. Got a great idea for it.
in the current config it either loops the image over and over or it waits for you to touch A5 to play the image. it doesn't loop through different images.
@queen kayak
And Adafruit just notifiied me that my order will arrive on Tuesday. That is just sooooo cool to be soooo fast. Gotta love Adafruit.
@haughty quiver so in current config if you have several images coded, and you don't have loop on, you power on, hit a5, it plays the image and stops. hit a5 again and it plays the next image?
no, it plays the same image each time you hit A5 so that you can work on capturing the photo just right. Then, when you are ready to use a different image, currently you plug into a laptop and comment out the image name and uncomment the next one you want to work with. It sounds cumbersome, but it wasn't too bad when I did the main photoshoot for the guide.
Well people, it's 4pm and time to play House Husband before the wife gets home from work. MAKE a nice day! 😃 Chicago signing off.
Again, great show @haughty quiver Thanks eh...
@haughty quiver ok i understand. the problem is i'm going to try to do this on the go. with several images. so take it out, and take pics with several different images loaded. so plugging in and editing on the go wouldn't work for my application 😫
I get that @queen kayak -- looking into it.
Force is with you
hahaha, DVader is a bronie. #Truth
@haughty quiver much appreciated!
@queen kayak I updated CPX version of light paintstick, now you can hit the on board buttons to increase or decrease the speed of playback. Additionally, flipping the switch to the left and restarting the board puts into looping animation mode, flip to the right and restart for one-shot mode where pressing A5 runs the image one time.
may the force be with you @haughty quiver

Good evening all you wonderful people!

'evening, all!
...WHY did YouTube decide that my internet deserved 320p?
Special thanks to @rapid hornet who spent 5 hours yesterday under a medical bed of an AT User helping us solve a problem for him!
@rapid hornet has a magic button.
evening everyone!
@river peak Mine decided on 480p 😦
Switching to 720 worked just fine, but WHY, YouTube, Why?
720p here
Travis is a friend to noone! 😆
@rapid hornet What happened to the wiskers? 😃
DRAGON!
Here be...
Drakaras.
@heavy siren My fiance admitted I could grow a beard so I shaved it since it was still itchy.

I'll keep my eye on this project @haughty quiver
@waxen thistle Now that's punny. 😃
Um....turn on fire? I think the keyword for that is "Drakaras".

I have a rather strange question for @open girder . Do you remember what Wired magazine LadyAda appeared on the cover. I am a collector and one of the things is magazines with LadyAda on the cover. Don't get me wrong, I love my wife very much. But I have the MAKE, HACKSPACE and SMORE mags with her on the cover. I would like the Wired mag to round out my collection. I can't seem to find the issue number.

@noble grove stall. Product page said 400ma stall current, i think... or, they can answer it. 😄
Questions:
-Is the silicone neopixel waterproof?
-How much torque does the door lock motor have?
Not a question:
I'm making the electronics for a friend's staff. It's using two fifty-packs of these aftermarket neopixels. It has some really cool features, two of which my friend animated. the gif starts when the red dot flashes. I'll be going on show and tell with it once it's done

Yeah, the two PIR settings can be funky to use at first. Love this skull project!
Of course Phil B would have a dragon eye in there

@haughty quiver I am curious as to why your show has gone from 1 hour to 30 minutes lately. Just wondering.
Because JP is everywhere, he can't be there always 😃
Yes, trying to optimize!
Plus, it makes for easier to watch chunks with Video on Demand (youtube, etc)
I see a 90 minute video runtime...I sigh. I think many things -- it's rambling, I don't have that much time to watch, etc.
I see a 25 -35 minute video? Yeah, that's something I can squeeze in before my next task.

Wish I could've been there for 3D Hangouts. but had to work. So I'll be around for Show n Tell and Ask an Engineer tonight though for sure!
Sorry I missed your show @hard hollow and @rocky reef - that's one good looking shirt! Sorry about the mic problems
We have punted and gone back to a single Blue Mic Raspberry - it works well http://a.co/d/2HYQ9mG
@pearl shoal no worries! agreed, USB mics are better alternative.
@hard hollow and @pearl shoal I'm a big fan of the AT2020 USB mic from Audio Technica. It's so straightfoward and awesome quality.
The plug and play USB I think outweighs a more robust XLR setup, until you need multiple channels/mixing/etc.
AT2020 USB + Rode deskclamp mic stand + foam windscreen as a "pop" filter. It's low cost compared to a pro audio setup
The monster sized Blue Yeti mic is fun.
I have one as well - It's great for group audio, but for a single speaker, the Raspberry sounds identical, and it doesn't show up in the shot (plus it's portable and uses a micro USB instead of a mini)
@pearl shoal Wow, that Raspberry is a tiny looking thing.
It works very well, it's mountable, and it folds to fit in your laptop bag
Looking forward to show & tell tonight!
very halloween
@pearl shoal nice, BTW I test printed that clip and backing – unfortunately the tolerances were too tight 😦 I can work on it tomorrow.

@lavish patrol Electronics and salt water taffy....still not friends.
@waxen thistle Lol.
@spring heath - that's one of my favorite musicals (very very NSFW)
All you need is some Silicone Conformal coating to waterproof your stuff! And that stuff is cheap on amazon
I had an idea once to make a musical instrument out of PVC pipes, but the Blue Man Group beat me to it.
@lavish patrol No reason you can't do it, build upon what they did -- they have something designed for theatre performance. Imagine what you can do do if you remove that requirement...
Yes, and you could add your own midi-controlled actuators rather than hammering manually (guess that was the whole idea?)
Plus, so many other people have done it -- learn their lessons, as life is too short to make all of the mistakes yourself 😃
Use ABS pipes. Uncharted territory? 😆
Or green Mario pipes. Whack-a-Bowser.
@waxen thistle Lol.
This is such a cool build.
and very impressive. Bravo @hard hollow & @rocky reef!!!

Be cautious with the canary, it CAN cut skin if sawing. Our little 5yo managed to slice his finger 😉

Thanks again @hard hollow and @rocky reef Just placed my order and will be recieving my 14th perma proto. 😃
Need an idea for them...hmmmm.
I want to ask about #1-13 @heavy siren --- but first rule of PermaProto club is to never talk about PermaProto club....
@waxen thistle Oops, my bad. But I still need an idea. Any suggestions?
@waxen thistle What happens in PermaProto club stays in PermaProto club.
Will the saberwing have a microSD slot for sounds files?
@open girder That is awesome with the AR + QR code -- all I could think of was Iron Man's Jarvis holographic system. Scan the code, get the product image + tap for spec sheets, videos, links to the learning system projects, etc
I2S!
That doggone Hallowing is out of stock again.
Take my money
My dad had this custom build mosfet audio amp. How it works is that it has 2 mono channels one for left and right side. It uses irfp240 for the N-Channel. Each side uses 2 250UF capacitators. We connected the left capacitator wires to the right side and that worked. so we know its one or two of the capacitators. Does Adafruit sell 250UF capacitators? Sorry for the long question.
@open girder can you make a version of the saber wing with an sd card reader on it? (coming from someone who is working on a lightsaber and Id recommend an sd card reader for sure! )
Can you provide suggestions to add 1 or 2 7-segment number displays to a circuit playground/crickit project using circuit python and/or makecode?
👋
True
Are you going to make a trinket M4?
Yeah.. I was thinking about the Teensy prop-board
ItsyBitsy M4 is very tiny
@odd stream im currently using a board similar to the teensy prop board but it isnt that board and it mounts to the bottom of the teensy.
Looks like I will refresh my Transistor knowledge. Thanks @odd stream
Q: With USB C adoption getting higher every day is adafruit planning to make the switch to usb C in board designs? Any negative aspects of using USB C?
Weird phone ring
Adafruit, if you arent gonna do an sd card slot could we have a decent chip for storage on the wing? A lot of people with custom sabers also tend to use a lot of sound files that they can switch between
As nice as USB-C is, it hasn't reached market saturation yet -- it's on a lot of Windows and every Mac laptop...but it's pricier, bigger -- and worse off, it excludes everyone who's using legacy USB-A.
Whereas let's be realistic, nearly every USB-C user has an adapter for "legacy" USB-A devices they own.
Thanks and good night!
@open girder Thanks again for another wonderful evening of shows!
Thanks @open girder 😃
I think that weird phone ring was me

JOHN PARK'S WORKSHOP LIVE 9/13/18 Milk Jug Glow Skulls @adafruit @johnedgarpark #adafruit
Hey everyone..
👋
You can get those jugs with water and juice as well....
Good afternoon all you wonderful people!
[sorry for the late arrival -- what did I miss? Did JP blow anything up? 💥 ]
Wait, that's old-school Mythbusters....
You've got a good eye for it!
I got one of the bonnets and accidentally pulled off one of the 'Lite' pads for the left tft. I was going to just run a jumper but couldn't figure out where it connected...
I only time the edited cuts on AAE 😉
It's not paranoia when it's out to get....LOOK OUT BEHIND YOU!
Whew. That powerglove nearly got you.
Like the skull on a pole in the background....Is its favorite song "I've got no body"?
I thought that was a servo making the noise
I'd love AAE to open to that screaming.
That skull looks to have a splitting headache
REMINDER - about the cleaning of the milk
Milk -- does a body good. But not when you heat it for molding a skull....
Please use only fake skulls
Warning! Do not touch hot melted plastic with bare hands
can't you use an animal skull or does it need to be plastic not to stick
You could leave the head flat for a Frankenstein look
asks Indiana Jones for a crystal skull.
Could a hot air rework station be used for fine details?
@haughty quiver I believe that it is to help with it NOT exploding when you drop it. Instead of exploding everywhere that little dent will just pop out. Im just guessing about that because thats from my own experience stocking milk at my store!
Also, have an ABC fire extinguisher in your workspace at all times.
They're a unitasker that I hope to NEVER use.
Seems PET plastic would work better than the HDPE in the milk jug. Since it will collapse with heat.
Excellent project @haughty quiver !
HIIIIIII MOM!!!! flails excitedly
@haughty quiver Thanks for another awesome show!
Very cool
Phrenologist says what
Ok so we’re not supposed to use our OWN skulls for this, right?
@eager sapphire ....wait, we're not?
very important point.
i have the skull vodka - just need to empty it i will try it out!
Yeah, see, John, we need supervision.
This looks like a fun make John! Thank you for sharing it.
you got it! it's super fun to make.
Did you ever think of using a vaccum durring the process?
@simple goblet excellent. If you want to see something odd, check out videos online of Dan Akroyd talking about it
I think he's an owner of the company
yes he is
could you remind me of the product you used to secure the TFTs to the box?
I think he used these ... https://www.adafruit.com/product/3768
that's it!
ahhh thanks!
and some M2.5 nylon screws and standoffs
you could use lots of different things, those were just handy at the time
the moving Jaw with speaker would creepy if you put plastic to it too like jaw
there is those new stuff too what are cool
@opal wing a vacuum is a very cool idea. I've seen it done online in video but didn't try it myself yet

What’s the #1 cause for.a 3D printer to go “spaghetti mode” like that?
Clogged nozzle?
in this case it was the spool, we didn't put it away properly
thanks so much for hanging out folks!
Thanks for the show (and the explanation) guys!
@eager sapphire For me it's that the filament got "crossed" - tangled to the point that it made a knot on the spool - that causes enough back-pressure that it doesn't extrude and eventually either snaps or clogs
Good evening all you wonderful people!

Sorry @ivory kiln -- next week.

@waxen thistle no sudden movements or you might scare him away
A rogue Colin! 😉
Na, no worries @haughty quiver . Lol, maybe I'll have that Make code figured out by next week.
I think Colin would make a great rogue. Hmm, or maybe a bard! Wait, no! Mr. Certainly has more of a bardic stature.
