Have a permanent one in my reminders, โDUDE! JP IN DA HOUSE!โ
So excited for PyCon!
@ripe blade the tldr is: we like, better video quality, faster transfer, lighter/water proof and works with previous prescription lenses
i liked how there were "97 in stock" last night. I knew immediately where 3/100 went... ๐
@rocky reef I'm really curious about those.
@eager sapphire DOOOOOOD!
๐
@odd stream ah yea great for pov of projects we're working on
Yes, @odd stream 4pm Eastern Standard Time
@muted mesa 97 of which product?
@rocky reef pretty neat actually. Iโm pretty impressed by their design and implementation. Itโs perfect for what consumers are into now. Sharing your day to day life, capturing moments, sharing with others, and all of it just sitting on your face. Itโs what I expected the Google Glass to be, but that didnโt quite work out. At least not for now and in the consumer space anyway.
@rocky reef Yeah, That's what I'm thinking... for build videos, rather than always an overhead camera.
@waxen thistle the CircuitPython posters.
ahhh
Roberto is crazy ๐
Crazy is good ๐
@eager sapphire Just set a weekly one.
Yes, thatโs what I do, @odd stream
Or rather, what I did
Oh, youโre telling me thatโs what you just did.
I need a nap.
@eager sapphire yeah.. sorry.
Can i use Adafruit parts commercially?
My 3d print over the last couple days wasn't nearly as practical... NeXT cube RaspPi case ๐
@storm wharf I believe the answer is likely "Yes" but I would definitely recommend e-mailing support@adafruit.com to get the exact answers, restrictions, etc.
Instead of working on his PhD, heโs working on being a Mighty Morphin Power Ranger. @proper trench ๐๐๐
I seem to have a thing for printing retro computer replicas.

Yay PyCon!
It's not CircuitPython, it's CircuitPyCon
wish i could come hang out with you all...
brb, building a gemma the size of phil's head.
@waxen thistle Bigger!
@open girder Open Spaces
@storm wharf You definitely can but they may be more expensive than doing it yourself
Next project is building an artist easel. The tabletop one I have is held in place with a few strategically placed bricks covered with anti-skid padding. Time to swap that out with something Bob Ross would be proud of ๐
Trying to think how I can add electronics to it. Make it a "smart" easel...
Oh man, good point, now I want to hook up a log audio pot and plot that
Hey guys I was just on Youtube Live, is this the place to ask a question about a problem?
@haughty quiver Sounds like a guide page ๐
Her s_y robots are hilarious, too
@proper dagger Yup! #help-with-projects is particularly good. Most folks will be busy watching the stream now
@proper dagger yes, this is the place. they'll open up for questions at the end of the show....tannewt covered it. ๐
Good on you, @fallow fractal
Thanks guys! I'm guessing I post my question at the #help-with-projects tag or in this one?
This is one of the things I sincerely love about this community.
congrats @vernal mulch !
Yes,indeed
@proper dagger I recommend projecthelp because its less busy
Im currently crocheting
great job with the guide @vernal mulch
@rapid hornet ok thanks a lot!

I lost the ac plug for some desktop speakers. Is there a better process than trial and error for finding/selecting a replacement? Does adafruit have anything that could help?
I'm learning how to setup an old linux box as a router. I'm wondering how to test it. Not limited to just bandwidth testing; I'm wanting to validate Think "acceptance testing". Is there a "de facto" testing process suite?
@meager fiber, you mean the AC adapter? Usually where the AC adapter plugs in there's a notation saying how many volts and whether it's center positive or negative.
right, that part I'm familiar with, but are there different shapes/forms/lengths/etc?
the plug is usually 2.1mm standard these days. So you just have to pick one with the right voltage, polarity, and current rating. If you have some other AC adapters you can try for the right fit (with power off!) and then measure the diameter with calipers. Then just search for a wall wart with the right specs.
Great show Limor and Phil
I won the metro and it come with circuit python 2.2 will I be able to update it once version 3 comes out
@fiery coyote Great! You can try the alpha version of 3.0 now.
@fiery coyote What retro gaming are you interested in? I've got a circuitpython gameboy cartridge design on order from oshpark
They're Dell speakers, and if they're designed anything like the rest of the products, they picked something strange, and hard to find. I was hoping (a longshot) that there would be some kind of procedure to follow or index I could lookup or something besides guessing or trial and error.
8 bit Nintendo
Product number 3505 right
Can a alpha version of python brick my board
so NES? it can't brick it
Yes NES
nice! I want to do an NES cartridge too
Are you the lead developer of circuit python
@meager fiber do you have a model or part number for the speakers?
What happens if i brick my board
you won't brick it. The bootloader is protected - that's the only thing that might get hurt by errant code, but the protection will prevent that. You can always reload it again with the bootloader
@fiery coyote Congrats! It's a sweet board. The SAMD51 is a great chip.
Luke got the Metro M0 respin
Ah. I missed that detail.
So is this a big upgrade for the uno I got off of eBay
The SAMD21 is amazing if you're used to 328s... like I was when I switched to Feathers.
I don't have it handy, but I could try doing a search for a replacement based on the PN. I was just hoping I wouldn't have to get the specific part and could just find an appropriate adapter (one that fits).
@fiery coyote Oh yeah. I went from UNO/ProMini to Feather & Trinket M0s
@meager fiber what is printed on the back at the power connection?
I must depart. My pillow and blankets beckon...
I don't have the speakers handy atm.
Is it possible to run ardrino and python boot loaders at the same time
It will be like 12V 500ma with a little picture of a C-shaped thing and + and -. That's probably all the info you need. I've had a number of Dell speakers and they usually use standard power plugs. But the voltages for these things are all over the place.
Or can you only have one at a time
The bootloader is permanent. It loads whatever program you want to run. Sometimes that's an Arduino program, or it could be CircuitPython, which is a very big program, but is a program like any other that's loaded via the bootloader.
Is circuit python a dumbed down version of the python c code
no, it's smartened up ๐
@paper peak Well, that's good news. I'll take a look later. The electrical part is easy. I was just hoping there was a similarly easy way to determine the right physical characteristics, but maybe I'll get lucky and it'll be standard.
cheers
So what ever I can do in a computer python code I can run that on my board
seriously, the basic language is very close to Python 3.4, with a few features omitted. It doesn't include most of the big library (lots of extra modules) that comes with regular Python. Instead we provide libraries that control the pins on the board, control peripherals, etc.
@meager fiber if you have other AC adapters you can see if they fit and measure them. But Dell has a lot of specs for products on their website. Once you have the model number, I think you will have everything you need.
@fiery coyote Take a lookt at https://adafru.it/cpy-welcome and https://adafru.it/cpy-essentials.
@meager fiber here are dimensions for a typical 2.1mm jack: https://cdn-shop.adafruit.com/datasheets/21mmdcjackDatasheet.pdf
@fiery coyote a way to think of it: you can do Python things, but you can't do PC things.
gahhh missed the shows tonight, will have to catch up tomorrow
@lethal lagoon I had to rewatch it as was occupied on that time
@shell mason thankfully, we can rewatch at our convenience ๐
hi all!going live in just a few minutes
hiyo!
Good afternoon all you wonderful people! ๐
We all set over here.
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
FB doesn't want to go live. Poor FB.
Loud and clear on Twitch.
I saw nothing on youtube. Fine on twitch
Still nothing on YT here
@haughty quiver I read that as FBI. And for a moment there was really confused as to what you were up to.
@haughty quiver YouTube is showing live stream offline.
Watching on user/adafruit/live, John
When in doubt, turn it off an back on again.
Waiting, rather than watching
When really in doubt, break out a 20# sledge.
When totally in doubt, bring in the Mythbusters.
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
I've just had a crash course in Twitch - now watching.
John Park's Workshop. Coming up - how to move from YT to Twitch. ๐
Maybe just send people on YT over to Twitch
The whole google vs. amazon battle wages on...
If youโve ever looked discomposed (decomposed?), Iโve never seen it.
Sorry, I've been bouncing between "fire drills" here. Did I miss anything so far? I think I see motors. Are we playing with a green hexagonal robotics board today?
Very nice! And I think I need to correct the above -- looks to be octagonal. The more sides the merrier! ๐
Is this the new paradigm - naming gadgets after insects instead of fruit?
Youtube has failed.
Playing on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
YouTube isn't working today.
Potential insect product names: Earwig (audio), bedbug (sleep monitoring), silkworm (wearables).
You're fired for the first and second ones.
Haha, thanks Kattni.
Mosquito - for a drone.
Wow, it just showed up on YouTube
youtube seems work now
So it did!
Too late. We're on Twitch now.
Yep!
Only forty minutes late. ๐
"Expressly" for the Express... Nice. ๐
@haughty quiver Lost audio
Mike's dead.
Lost audio John!
Poor Mike. He never saw it coming.
BEEP BEEP
@haughty quiver There's no audio
John Park's Workshop Charades
@haughty quiver sound died
Wish I had his cell # lol
Ok, it's a piece of cardboard.
We need subtitles.
He's probably going to cut it, hence the cutting mat
Probably a wearable or toy, hence the flexing demo.
Or make a wobble board.
Ok, now this is a more rigid board...maybe he doesn't want wobble?
Ok, he's gluing cardboard...looking at the side structure.
This is actually what an Ikea table looks like if you cut it open, true story.
ok, double corrigated...
double muted
Nice ad for Digi-Key anyway. ๐
Sine waves in cardboard. An audio wave!
There's the top of John's head.
Oh, I get it, he's making Sun Chips!
@haughty quiver You're muted still....we can't hear a word you've been saying for some time now ๐ฆ
That's some serious corrugation.
it's been about 10mins now, lol
So this is a DIY beehive.
That's what I thought we were doing...
Look at this delicious honeycomb.
Blah blah blah. Okay Andy, sorry
This is a frame
Itโs got...corners
And you can lay it flat
Seems like he's doing a cardboard primer. Different constructions of board.
Anybody try YELLING?
Now it's delaminated.
JOOOOHHHHNNNNN!!!!
Probably telling the use case for each of them
This is copper that is copper this is copper that is copper
Copper for everyone!
No audio? Just fix it in post...
Now he's paying music. Probably could do with some sound here.
That would be fun to overdub, yes
no audio
do <@&327289013561982976> have @haughty quiver 's number to let him know?
@haughty quiver Workshop charades.
This is a knife? No. THIS is a knife!
Extolling the many virtues of the Xacto
he really needs to get back into the habit of looking at his chat
Versus scissors. Heated debate ensues
Rock beat scissors. Xacto beats everyone.
Looks like the Xacto won
knife
Oooo. Carpet knife
bigger knife!
With removable blade.
13 minutes now
Next we're going to demonstrate a samurai sword.
That's how John cut his finger.
It's great for cutting pesky cardboard.
@dire bane texted him
He's looking now!
Knives like that need a built-in band-aid pouch.
I swear he glanced at the chat just then
what chat is he using?
NO AUDIO JOHN!
PSA: I'm sure John has said this while muted, but a sharp knife is ideal. A dull knife is more dangerous than a sharp one.
Another knife. Don't take that through airport security.
If you cut a finger and say ouch without audio on, is it really a cut?
called him and got voicemail
@waxen thistle For sure. That goes for any use of a knife. I believe dull knives are the amin cause of kitchen accidents.
And cardboard, apparently, dulls knives like nobodyโs business
@rapid hornet Makes sense.
John isn't talking anywhere.
Cut away from yourself, never towards another person, and always wear eye protection. Blades can break unexpectedly.
You checked twitch, too?
Indeed, video is quite fine
He's recording it locally, hopefully he's got sound locally.
@clear matrix The he can fix it in post.
Yeah, I really wanted to see (and hear) this one. The whole cardboard thing is cool.
I actually would like to hear him talk about cardboard and knives -- a great low-cost, lower-risk DIY medium (compared to PVC, lasers, etc)
This must be Thursday. Never could get the hang of Thursdays.
Cardboard is silent. When you cut it, you can't hear it scream.
Speak softly, and carry many knives
Very cool. Hadn't thought about using a pattern marker/cutter.
Oh man, I love the use of that perforating blade
Would be handy with posterboard and foamboard, too.
@haughty quiver would be handy if Adafruit sold the cardboard cutting accessories as a kit.
@waxen thistle Metric and Imperial.
Xacto, perforating blade, ruler, angle ruler, scissors, etc. All handpicked for one package.
It's the "missing fingertips" package.
Bandages are extra...
All we need now is a microphone...
i think john has 30 iterations of every tool
The drafting ruler is especially nice.
Ok, he's doing some very nice safety cutting tips.
his facetime rang more than his phone
nice ruler!
Make sure you are flush with the ruler, never cut into the ruler....or else it'll jump and knick your fingers.
Digi-Key again.
Imperial rulers come in several styles: vadar, palpatine, snoke, kylo ren.
@waxen thistle I find your lack of metric disturbing.
Cut perpendicular to yourself, never towards yourself.
Disinfectant.
Forceps
Cool toy. I might see if I can get one.
Itโs a tiny vise. Like my small vices. Spelling is telling here
....what is that, a punch?
Hole punch.
stapleless stapler
Cordless bungee
Doctor, what are you planning to do with that?
No audio, @haughty quiver
@haughty quiver Friendly reminder -- you're muted! We haven't heard you for about 15 minutes...
No audio on twitch as well?
Moment of realization - no sound for the last 15 minutes
Correct. There's no audio. The video is lovely. ๐
Audio is off - since :48 after the hour
there you are
We hear you @haughty quiver !!!
Oh, that means the end to the charades.
Hello, @haughty quiver ๐
@inner spade That's awesome, thanks for the links ๐
28 mins
Start agin! Yes
@haughty quiver The community stepped up with great subtitles ๐
I was late so I appreciate take 2! @haughty quiver
I tried shouting to no avail!
It's a piece of cardb - oh wait, we're not doing that any more. ๐
Fiber -- important in cardboard, datacenters, shirts, and your diet.
I'm getting deja-vu over here.
the last part we heard was when you put down the electronics and started the tools and techniques segment
So are we. ๐
Truss pattern -- awesome in structural engineering.
That's how modern doors are made.
It's a wonderful combination of drafting, architectural modeling, leatherworking, and mebbee even sewing. Kewl.
A tool I've found that's excellent for putting an edge xacto & retracting knife blades: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000WALUV6
Sweet, thanks for that, @waxen thistle
@haughty quiver Exactly -- it's a diamond honing edge, it came recommended to me by prop makers. One or two swipes on each side is enough to renew life in a cheap xacto blade.
Is that Darth Ruler?
Nicely machined

Cardboard War And Peace.
Here's an ergonomic xacto knife -- it's not on amazon currently, but there are other colors available. Also, check your local hobby stores:
Nice. That grip near the neck looks perfect.
Isn't manual focus so much nicer than that auto rubbish.
It's one of my favorites -- only complaint is that it rolls easily -- so I sanded down an "edge" so it stops rolling when it hits that flat part.
(rolls when you set it down)
The magic of live demos!
We'e certainly had that tonight. ๐
I will say, it was a ton of fun doing workshop charades -- seriously. I was having a blast.
It was what I needed after a long day.
Tim "The Tool Man Taylor" .....more POWER! Augh Augh Augh!
Yanno, a two hour JP workshop is a fine idea, as weโve seen.
This is a pretty inspirational site for complex mechanical movement from simple locomotion sources: https://www.youtube.com/user/thang010146/videos
Exactly, @waxen thistle
@haughty quiver Thank you John for a really nice show. ๐ Problems and all, it was a good time.
Yay! We made it!
Great show! Thanks for waiting for me to get here, @haughty quiver !
Not to be confused with the sleeper hit Sci-Fi show, "Sliders".
That was a fine show, @haughty quiver , thank you, technical difficulties just prove the whole thing really was live.
haha thanks so much everybody for hanging in with me there!!
There are a lot of prop makers and DIYers/Makers on Twitch under the "Creative" channel.
I have to say, I'm rather impressed Twitch (and Amazon) were able to attract and retain such independent talent.
Logging out now. Night all.
Cheers @lavish patrol
bye @lavish patrol thanks again for coming!
Thank you Adafruit team for all you did to get John's attention ๐
It all worked out! Silent movies were a thing for ages. We like to keep it retro from time to time.
Btw, I saw the previous discussion of xacto knives. I remixed an xacto knife stand that is tweakable via the customizer app on Thingiverse: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2253390
this is cool @opal wolf thanks for posting, I'll check it out.
@haughty quiver Based on a comment on this design, I tried pausing the print and addind sand to give it more weight. and it worked quite nicely.
Oh, I love that idea! I'm printing one right now, perfect timing
@haughty quiver Cool
My exacto blade had a cap that wouldn't stay on, which I felt was dangerous. I got tired of using a big rubber band to keep it on and went looking for 3D printable replacement and found the original of that. I thought that a stand would be even more convenient as you could grab the knife with only one hand, so I tweaked the design and made it work with the customizer to make it more useful for others.

@lavish patrol Thanks. Is there a reason that it changes every week and is only revealed at the last minute?

Hello @waxen thistle
Good evening
And in case I don't see you, good afternoon, good evening and goodnight. ๐
And if you can't see me, that means the cloaking device has been calibrated properly. Amazing what you can make when you mix Middle-Earth and Romulan technologies.
I can't can't see you.
@lavish patrol Thanks. That has been my experience also but I would feel more comfortable knowing ahead of time. It seems inconsistent that such a well run organization does not provide the information until the last second. I thought there might be some reason to hide it until the last minute because of security or some such. Just curious.

Hi @haughty quiver
Umm. Johnny!
Is anyone else hearing echos?
@odd stream It's OK for me
Not here, @odd stream
OK.. it's normal now.
Other than the one inside my head (from all the empty space), nope. It sounds fine for me...
Fine here.
Weird.

@odd stream I think I've seen things where yes, it can

I was reading the description of a mod for a game a few days ago, and it said something that struck me. "This came up during testing, so I decided to keep it and it became a feature."
Yeah, never precede a demonstration with a remark more predictive than 'Watch this!'
That was flair, yes

So fun Wiiiiiii
@fallow fractal I don't know, I've seen Andrew Tridgell demo a UAV live on stage...

The UAV was in Canberra, Australia.
Live video feed, live telemetrry.
The UAV was flying around autonomously WHILE compiling the linux kernel.

You coat the copper with...lacquer?
Vats of chemicals is precisely why I don't do any sort of PCB making at home.

The first question that comes immediately to mind is how many servos can this board control?
...or steppers
@eager sapphire unlimited ๐
and disney hasnt done a takedown on that yet? they must like you...hopefully
loved the heart shaped box...
i want ......."1 million " servos..... on my "laser" moon
No smoke machine?
@eager sapphire (and everyone) from one of the blog posts:
CRICKIT has everything makers want/need for their creative mechatronics or robotics project:
4 x standard servos (mini or large)
4 x high current ULN2003 โDarlingtonโ drive transistors with kickback diodes, great for relays, solenoids, large LEDs, single motors. can also drive a uni-polar stepper
8 x analog&digital digital I/O for connecting various sensors, buttons, LEDs etc. We have female socket headers so its easy to plug in jumpers & wires. matching power and ground pins on each
2 x bi-directional DC motor drivers (DRV8833) with PWM support and overcurrent limited to 1 Amp max each. can also be used to drive a bi-polar stepper
4 x capacitive touch pads
1 x Neopixel output with level shifter on output so its 5V logic
1 x mono class D speaker amp with volume adjust potentiometer
1 x 5V @ 4A DC power input with on/off switch. Power input protection, will automatically turn off when input voltage is about 5.5V โ so no risk to smashing your board if you grab a 9V adapter by accident!
Maybe a dollar store smoke machine could be added
Thanks @muted mesa !
that should be one of my projects, a mini smoke machine using VG
The best part about Crickit is that the CPX is at the heart of it...the brains of it can be reused for so many other projects.
Adafruit has a 16 servo control board if anyone wants to expand their servo army, chainable to over a hundred

Good show! Liked the glue test segment.
thank you! I make CA glue fail so you don't have to.
I'll try the gel type. Have had good luck with it with certain porous materials.
good idea, let us know
Gorilla Super Glue GEL worked great.
Also testing PICP (polyisocyanate prepolymer), the foaming stuff that's also sold as Original Gorilla Glue, but it'll take longer to set. PICP was our go-to for foam-to-foam and might be useful for foam-to-cardboard or wood, stone, metal, ceramic, and glass -to-cardboard.
@haughty quiver
Oh good! I'll try gel.
@slow flint I regularly load Adafruit Eagle files with KiCad nightly. They seem to work just fine. I haven't actually ordered boards from it though
@Gary Kester#1319 This was from @haughty quiver 's live workshop show earlier today. He tested quite a few glue/tape/attachment techniques for attaching cardboard-to-cardboard-to-whatever. I provided some glue and cement options to add to his list. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wt7Wkb6tmVE
