Another cool workshop @haughty quiver !
Another fine show thanks @haughty quiver
thanks very much all!
You could have it triggered by a motion detector.
that would scare the heck outta people!
...so call that a bonus
😀
@haughty quiver . Great how doing these projects teaches us little tricks and tips that I was looking for, for a different project. Much appreciated
Oh terrific, so glad to hear that @onyx arrow
@haughty quiver Was belaboring backlighting a retro meter and now will be using some soft white sequins thanks to you! The perfect solution.
@quartz estuary camera switcher is a cigar box and arcade buttons with a Feather M0 Express doing HID USB keycodes
Ooh, I'd like to see that meter when you get it lit, @inner spade
I haven't done much LED lighting of translucent PLA @onyx arrow but I know @hard hollow and @rocky reef have
@inner spade Cool.
that's cool, and I finally realized the "Cedar Grove" lettering on one of your previous projects is your one mark!
*own
Yeah, the name of my studio.
Things make more sense now.
I kept picturing Grover from the Muppet show doing CG graphics.
@forest pebble @clear matrix OK... ordered that web cam.
I'm okay with that, too!
:)
@odd stream Great! I hope it works out for you as well as it did for us. And I hope ours keeps working out as well as it did.
@clear matrix My next question is whether a neopixel ring will fit around the lens. I'll figure that out this weekend I expect. My goal is to use it on my linux workstation for my next Show&Tell appearance.
@odd stream That'll be nice!
Probably not next week. I have a couple projects underway, but both will take a bit of time.
Hey all, in all the AT-AT excitement today, I forgot to let you all know today's coupon code: INSERTQUARTER gets you 10% off your order!
hides the slug on a string
@forest pebble @clear matrix Logitech camera arrived, hooked up, obs installed & audio/video recording is working great!
I have to get some cameras too
@shell mason I just got the C922x by Logitech. It seems really nice. I plugged it into my Ubuntu box, installed OBS, fired it up and it just worked.
@odd stream that was my experience with it as well. I am very glad it's working for you :)
@shell mason Great quality picture. Mics seem good as well.
@odd stream That's great!
@forest pebble Next payday (probably the mid-Feb one.. rent & all on the 1st) I'll order a couple more. And figure out a way to make one into an overhead cam on my workbench
Nice that it has a tripod mount.
@odd stream Yeah that's how I had it hooked up to my Mac. @forest pebble found a 20$ scissor spring-arm thing, like some desk lamps have, with a tripod mount on it and it worked really well for moving around overhead.
I'm currently thinking about one of those arms. I've seen them used for mics as well.
Yeah I think a lot of them are marketed for mics, but the webcams weigh almost nothing, so they work as well.
Price range is staggering 😃
The mounting-on-the-bench end is the biggest concern I think. Somethign solid that'll work in the constrats I have.
The arm he got was impressively solid. There's a limit on how thick the table it is mounted to can be, and it didn't look super solid on first sight, but it ended up proving to be.
@clear matrix Getting an arm for my mic might be a thing as well (as mentioned, I have a Blue Yeti I'm not currently using) depending on how well the camera mics work.
@clear matrix Do you have a name/link?
@odd stream Actual mic is almost always better. And yeah, give me a minute.
@odd stream It says specifically for that cam, but it's a standard tripod mount. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N77YBLU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I had it in my head to dig up a broken lamp and repurpose it, but this was so much easier.
The tripod mount is pure win.
Agreed.
@clear matrix Wow.. This camera makes my poorly lit office in the evening look like bright daylight. I'm impressed.
@odd stream Yeah the lights were down for the presentation and it worked out really well.
I've been having great fun playing with my new camera, and now an overhead arm for it 😃 Next step is to get a couple more cameras (1 for desk, 1 for workbench, 1 overhead at workbench)
YAY. @odd stream
You should get a commision when I get mine. ;) Are they really only 78 bux for an HD cam?
$109 CDN... so $78 USD sounds about right
I'm poised to buy a couple more.
I was amazed by how well they handle sub-optimal lighting. I don't seem to have to worry about adding more lighting to my office. I might do something like @split gazelle did for her gopro (dimmable neopixel rin around the lens).
Once I have the additional cameras I want to play around with making some videos. My CPX shield PCBs should be here soon. That might be a good project to start with.
I got a C920 (previous model) at a local Staples for $70 a few months ago (and maybe had a coupon too)
Just ordered a second C922x to be an overhead at my bench
Might end up getting up a 3rd as a face-cam on the workbench... slow rolling it and learning as I go.
looks nice plan
Once that arrives, I need to figure out juggling multiple cameras.
I bet @rapid hornet could make a webcam what use Circuitpython
@odd stream think making camera yourself
@shell mason At just over $100 per camera, and they just work, and work incredibly well, I would rather just buy them and spend my time on other things. I have enough to do/learn around making use of them 😃
@shell mason Classic build/buy decision.
@odd stream I was thinking what if i make camera array and micarray to project what use raspberry pi
@odd stream have you check new RealSense cameras?
those have depth in it
with project prague you can use hand sings
Intel RealSense technology is shaping the future by giving devices and machines the ability to perceive their surroundings.

thanks for joining folks!
Always a great show Pedro thanks
@rocky reef Good show/project. I've been thinking about printed cookie cutters. I've also been thinking of a a cookie frrosting printer. I think that will be my xmas 2018 project.
@odd stream what about Cold brew coffee?
@shell mason I already have cold brew equipment.
did you looked that #general-chat post?
@shell mason I saw the post elsewhere, but haven't read/watched yet. A computerized cold brewer might be interesting though. A computerized press system would be even moreso!
@shell mason I've been giving that idea some thought off & on.
@shell mason It'd be a good addition to my smarthome system.
think if you get your morning coffee when you woke up
@shell mason exactly 😃
Get up and Go with 3D Printed would be cool as idea behind that pod was amazing
"Dave's awake.. start the coffee.. hmm.. he was up late workign last night.. extra strong this morning"
@odd stream mmh yes caffeine please.. thanks for the reminder xD
It'd have to be grinder + boiler + putting it all together in a pot with a steep timer... maybe a motorized plunger and dispenser.. It would have to wait until a cup was placed under it.. and accomodate various sized cups.
@odd stream as if you have wearable device what connect to pod it give a good estimate of sleeping cycle
or bed
My system will know when people are awake and moving around. The goal is for it to observe and learn routines, then adapt to them. Making coffee at the right time would be part of that.
Frying bacon might be another... but that's harder 😃

@shell mason looks amazing!
Wed again! Best night of the week.
AdaNight in AdaTime
If boards arrive in the next week I should have something for next week. I'll have my overhead camera by then as well.
you have overhead camera now?
I'm also redoing my first arduino shield project, this time using Eagle.
@shell mason No... it arrives tomorrow.
I have the arm for it, though. Right now it's either a face cam or overhead.
@odd stream I have arm and need mic light and camera for it so it is good
@shell mason I haven't decided on mic yet. I have a blue yeti that I might use. I haven't seen need to a light yet with this camera. If I do I think I'll try what @split gazelle did for her GoPro.
I have mic what i can use

JMK is freaking awesome!

JMK doesn't have time to say all JMK says. ;)
I wish I was going to live so long as to see what becomes of JMK in 20 years.
yeah seriously!!!
oh dear the hangout is robotic
Fitting, really, considering the subject at hand
indeed
Though going to see tornadoes is exciting.
So, I was just thinking. If there are lightsabers, are there heavysabers?

Haha the FM broadcaster on 91 MHz gets into the SEM
@glossy glacier That's a lot of watts
Hi @lean grail
@glossy glacier Copper mesh Faraday cage....
no it said " @sacred isle watch your lang"
@dire prism There is a big coil, but I think it's just for smoothing - the LEDs really are running DC high voltage
maybe I misspelled somthing
There should be info on the web about living near a powerful broadcaster
I live less than 1.5 miles away from a super big FM and DVB-T2 transmitter
never had any interference from it
@sacred isle It's ok. The bot also grabs words inside of words, it's still evolving.
@glossy glacier At least it's NPR, all things considered.
Thanks everyone 😃

nice
So, @glossy glacier - A bit ridiculous of a concept since it's Not Easy, but would a faraday cage around your garage work, or does the radio get in through the power lines?
I like the music tonight
music is funky
You guys jumped on quick!
me too @vernal mulch
"Some respectable" I love it 😄
@glossy glacier Get your ham license if you don't have one already. If the local hams don't know how to deal with the RFI, not too many other people will know the local situation.
good idea @fallow fractal
@inner spade Lol yeah. Last night it was clasical music
A lot of times the problem is already well-known.
Canon in d minor took out my SEM.
Might just be time to turn the SEM workshop into a faraday cage
I broadcast classical midi songs over PMR446
@fallow fractal I am definity going to do that. I am being put in contact with a local enginer to try and get this solved
@glossy glacier the SEM is too new to be compatible with that old music.
@glossy glacier Maybe need a common mode filter on the AC line. See about getting this book (might be at the library): http://www.arrl.org/shop/The-ARRL-RFI-Book-3rd-Edition/
adafruit is live at https://www.twitch.tv/adafruit
@glossy glacier On the plus side, at least you know what it is. That's always a huge step in getting things fixed.
@river peak It looks like its coming in over the power lines, it's slightly off band from the over the air broadcast.
yeah!
@glossy glacier Worst case you can put a transformer on the line, yes?
Prob intermodulating with another strong carrier
Its on ground
Oh yeah, shoulda remembered that....

The SEM already has internal insulation for hot and neutral.
I still think you need a Faraday cage
Thats going to get expensive fast...
I feel like show and tell should be a little longer
You'd just have to get a bit cagey with your funds.
they only have so much time 😃
And the SEM has good sheilding, so its not over the air
@glossy glacier Have you looked at the line noise ground to neutral?
@rapid hornet If they need more, I've heard the spice aisles have some thyme.
Still, 51000 wats is a lot to deal with
Watt are you really worried about?
Well aren't you planning on periodically bringing in new instruments and storing (selling; shipping) the current one?
@glossy glacier -> I'm late to the discussion, what about a notch filter on your signal line to just take out the local station?
Call the radio station request line and ask for total silence.
No, the new stuff I am working on is going to be my responsibilty, but not in my shop/wallet
is the station broadcasting a digital signal now?
Id just like to say that rework stations are awesome!!!!
@glossy glacier what station is that - kexp?
Then i will just get the carrier
My new bitcoins are too big for JP's arcade coin acceptor
@vernal mulch omg that is so awesome!
@spring heath You could say they're a "Bit" too big?

Adafruit Machine Line https://blog.adafruit.com/2018/01/22/adafruit-machine-line/
Ooohs and aahs
i have a question about my dotstar - one of the pixels does not appear to have the blue working - is that something i can fix?
Q: "How much paste do we need?"
A: "A glob should do."
I could envision two stacked pixel sand displays, linked by bluetooth or IR, simulating an hourglass.
Pixel sand sounds good too, @inner spade
vj blue either takes the most or least voltage of any of the three. I've forgotten if its the first or last to light up at a given numerical setting for brightness.
what would cause that and can i fix it?
@alpine nova go to https://forums.adafruit.com for product supportt
I'm hoping it's just programming.
IOS. Internet of Slides.
@inner spade Could do it on one display: triangles oin the middle that are offlimits.
ok @spring heath
@odd stream would like to see it pass through solid objects.
@alpine nova maybe ask in #help-with-projects later or the forums. if driving with 5v, sounds like the dotstar is just bad
@inner spade Got it. That would be cool.
i was using 3.7v but i figured i should try the forum
... or across a room...
yeah give the details in the forum: code, voltage, etc.
ok, thx @paper peak
"I love lamp"
this is what i need for my garage door opener
I am so down to do some electronics + food mashups 😃
hehe, "Crisp" details
I'll participate in a BBQ show...you pick the meat/err tofu.
How about a DIY sous vide system?
@odd stream You're the one that's planning a cookie printer, right?
@river peak I am
I got my mom a sous vide a couple chistmases ago. kinda wanted to keep it. 😄
I was in Starbucks on day over Christmas and looked at their cookies. I commented "you know, it'd be pretty straightforward to print those."
@muted mesa They really cool. We got one last Christmas (2016).
They are pretty simple. heater, circulator, temperature sensor.
@vernal mulch it was working before then, right? i'mnot sure i see the difference
Yeah. I looked at and said "I could make one...if I had time & $". Which one did you get? I got her the Anova one.
@muted mesa Same... the non-wifi model
those look...familiar... 😛
Mine rework station was like $180-$250 ish i think. But i managed to find it for $80 brand new!!!
Study your first aid for burns. ;)
i'll check it out. i like that you can just hit return to run through the cats @vernal mulch
@lean grail I got a cheap $80 one and it's great.
I am really looking forward to the 007 ADABOX.

@lethal lagoon is this the real sophy or the newly minted, 3-D printed one?
see y'all next week if not sooner
Great pic of MOSFET
aww just in time for mosfet the cat!
@lethal lagoon Now that you've 3D printed your face, you can definitely have some fun. A literal face-off!
MOSFET controls all the real power, right?
this music is greqat
@inner spade the real one this time!
do you have a tutorial that shows how to hook up a ESP32 with a 9 axis sensor to determine vibration. The samples would have to be captured at a a precise interval, and then I would need to do a FFT to get the vibration.
MOSFET is the true power behind Adafruit
lol
@river peak You would think that normally you would want to cool the mosfets.
But this one likes being warm.
@river peak yep! back up face seems like a good idea
im going to cast it in cement and use it as a buck for a mask
whats a buck @lethal lagoon ?
@lethal lagoon No kidding. We're at the stage of technology where if you printed it in high resolution in something biologically non-reactive, you could grow skin cells in a collagen matrix to match the surface.
@lethal lagoon Sooo much better than the plaster wrap technique. No straws needed.
@rapid hornet like a hard base to shape material on top of
They are already doing something like that for self grafts in burn wards.
ah! @turbid sandal may have done somethign for their helmet
but for the people who have profound facial injuries, it could be a life-saver.
@wild urchin yes! that's amazing tech!
@inner spade agree, although the resolution you get from life casting would be much better than my result
i think the newer kinect would have captured more detail too, but still not as much as life casting
... and the slight hair loss around the edges... 😉
@rapid hornet oh that's right!
I have a newer kinect I'm not using if you want to play with it @lethal lagoon
They shut down manufacturing, right?
@inner spade yep 😃 although now i think smooth on makes some kind of silicone you can use on facial hair with no release agent, if you're brave enough 😃
thanks @rapid hornet we have a newer one, but I didn't want to unhook it from the gaming setup hee hee
not that we game with it often anymore...
I don't use mine so its unhooked
ooh
@wild urchin yup
yes they also ruined voice control on xbox which i'm still grumpy about
it used to work so well
ah, thats a bummer
@lethal lagoon i giggled when i saw the post earlier. i researched a diy 3d scanner a couple days ago. was thinking of doing one with a time-of-flight sensor (or 5).
@lethal lagoon good to know! The last time I did it was for Evita's death mask scene. We were very careful and used petroleum jelly, but our actor had a tense moment anyway.
@inner spade wow! yes it's very scary to be in there! and we don't use the straws anymore, more often it just freaks people out when they (inevitably) fall out
@lethal lagoon We had our actor's twin as a backup. That's probably the ideal solution.
@muted mesa oh cool! are you thinking of scanning objects or people?
@inner spade 👍
Could you use something softer like aquarium airline tubing?
Or maybe just get a canula with extensions?
@wild urchin maybe, i think people just dont like having things stuck into their nostrels
Also, I'm covered with beard, so I'm not sure a life cast is an option for me.
added to being temporary blinded and weird globs of slime being slathered on your face, it's unnerving 😃
@lethal lagoon I was thinking more along the lines of objects, but could prob work with anything. however, i've way-back-burnered it. laser setups are much quicker than the time-of-flight would be...at least initially that's what i think.
@wild urchin ooh, that would be challenging! i wonder what the kinect scanner would make of your beard!
I'm not at Gandolf stage, but there is noticeable depth between beard edge and face.
@muted mesa ahh... there's also photogrammetry, id like to experiment with that eventually too
@lethal lagoon sooo...thanks for the new google search term! 😛
😃
@muted mesa hee hee... i'm always googling people's conversations in here 😃 always learning new things in discord!
ahh. ok. i've seen that in action...just didn't know the terminology. it is way cool. some pretty serious mathing i imagine just to find out the initial variables (height/angle/etc of camera).
yes for sure
@rapid hornet The who in the what now?
Does anybody in here also have a beard and is trying to figure out how to keep the beard while also having dust protection?
I've been thinking about positive pressure systems with a hood.
@turbid sandal sophy is doign face mask stuff
@lethal lagoon from scanned face think if you could add animated eyes and mouth so you 3D print your face
@shell mason would be cool! maybe 3D printed face + @low fractal animated eyes! creepy and awesome 😃
My second C922x camera arrived... now to test out dual camera use. Or more accurately I need to learn how to manipulate multiple cameras in OBS & hangouts.
... test

The shopping cart very positively confirms if a code entered was accepted. It's not ambiguous at all.
PO-20 goes for 59 bux on amazon
I just got a PO-12 Rhythm yesterday and even though I have no musical ability it's a blast
I found this reddit thread to decide "which should I buy first" https://www.reddit.com/r/synthesizers/comments/5kiza4/which_pocket_operator_to_buy/
it's a little old, came out before the metal ones
Jerry's Art-a-Rama carries similar paint boxes.
Wirewrap wire is great for point to point connections that don't move. Like John said, it's very thin, solid wire... bending will cause it to break pretty quickly.
This is like a cooking show where he's got the baked cake (a copy) already in the oven, done, before going on the air. ;)
It's worth having a spool in your drawer, though.
I tried stripping my wire wrap wire last night and met with fail.
No. But after I typed that I remembered where I put the correct stripper -- and more importantly, that it exists and I already have itt. ;)
I remember spending days straight wriewrapping.
With mine the little stripper is either inside the handle, or part of the handle
Once built a Z80 singleboard that was roughly equivalent to a ATMEL328 class MCU.
At one company I worked with years ago, we had motorized wire wrapping tools. Felt pretty spiffy to have that.
It took up a solidly packed 6"x8" board.
Still have these. They work with some of the header pins, too.
I remember long hours hunched over boards, too. Long hours.
I never had a motorized tool. Just what @inner spade just posted a pick of.. .the bottom one.
I have one of those now.. except it's blue.
I have that bottom one too, and another that is styled after one of those craftsman small drivers
Used to do motorized and hand wire wrapping. Lots of pre-stripped wire in bins.
With a tiny, easy - to - lose stripper inside it
It's a Vectech, not an OK, though. Back in the day I had an OK one.
I used a separate stripper that trimmed the wire to the proper length as well.
@odd stream the top one is a CW and CCW unwrapper.
This one is an OK industries tool - only mention it because I actually found it in the toolbox
I didn't realize wire wrap wire soldered very well at all.
I remember just soldering the +V and GND points
They don't let the host mutter to himself on PBS. ;) This is great.
Yes, solders great. I've done projects where I soldered the wirewrapped joints if I wanted it to last.
wicks up the solder very nicely.
Also, see my project where I hack an SPI flash onto a TrinketM0 using wirewrap wire.
Doesn't he need to thread a giant plastic nut onto the back of each switch?
I think they might be press fit
Speaking of SMD parts - can one use an iron with solder paste? Figuring it would be easiest to apply paste and then heat it with a soldering gun (as I have no rework station)
or with pop-out 'barbs'
@eager sapphire I was wondering that, too.
@eager sapphire I've never tried it, but it's just flux & solder grains, yes?
I used to take these small boards to my company’s manufacturing dept and bribe someone to do the SMD soldering, but I don’t work there any more
So now, it’s allll my problem
I love John's style. I hope to emulate it to some extent when I start.
@haughty quiver We used to use the "wire-to-button" technique with pocket calculators. Made some tractor tire rotation counters that calculated furrow distances and overall acreage.
Yes, John has it all figured out, I think. A natural at presentation.
Guessing I need to buy a heat gun and use that to melt the paste
@eager sapphire make a reflow oven from a toaster oven. I've seen several conversion projects around. I'll get to that point eventually.
Was kinda hoping to avoid that (unless I went to high volume board production, then I’d definitely want an oven)
Hair cam
@eager sapphire If you need high volume production it's time to start talking to fabs in Shenzhen.
This Linux client for discord (discord-canary) knows when the window is in the background and treats it as if I weren't paying attention and adds extra notifications that aren't there when in the foreground. ;)
@odd stream - you’re on the road to being another Adafruit, start with the toaster oven, now look where they are
@haughty quiver SHELLAC - standard 1950's tech for 'fixative'.
Or do what @open girder has done & buy machine for a line (stenciller, pick & place, oven)
“High Volume” being relative — “More than one board of a single type”
I figure that’s next for you @odd stream
Ah.. I see "high volume" as 100+. I've hand soldered (SMT) a batch of a dozen boards.
Not sure why you would need to insulate the ground wire inside of the controller case.
Yes, so I’d rather just use an iron + paste, at this point
@eager sapphire Nah... I'll use a factory.. elecrow or seeed.. something like that, if I need volume.
Anything of that scale, I’m already doing that for work, so there’s a standard path already where I’m not putting the boards together myself
Just handing off a schematic and a BOM, etc
But at home, the the Faraday cave.....
@eager sapphire Soldering SMT by hand limits your part select quite severly. Some sensor chips just can't be hand soldered... and that's where @open girder breakouts are invaluable.
@odd stream good point
@haughty quiver use a step-drill bit for acrylic. I've used it with 1/8" plexi with absolutely no breakout or cracking.
@inner spade plus, a piece of wood underneath the plexi cuts down on the “exit wounds”
I have ruined a lot of plexi in the past
Flipping a panel over to work the back of it, I've made the mistake more than once to fail to take into account the mirroring of left to right, while making irreversible modifications. ;)
@eager sapphire For my smarthopme nodes I did a custom board using mostly SMT but used a couple breakouts: Si7021 and the wireless radio.
Nice, I have an Si part planned in fact, SMD part that is a bit on the small side of tiny
A nice little radio receiver chip with a lot of features and very few pins
@eager sapphire yes, sacrificial backing helps. Did it once without backing and it still worked okay. 3/8" hole, if I recall.
@inner spade ....that is a black art
(For me)
Must use the right bits for it, and the right speed, yes?
I don’t recall ever seeing a “step-drill bit”
@eager sapphire Get a high quality bit, run at a slow speed, and let the bit do the work.
Nice! I have seen those and wondered on them
They are lifesavers for thin metal or plastic stock.
I take it you can get various “step depths” (don’t know what else to call it)
yes, that's how it works. On some materials you can feel it step to the next diameter.
The entire design looks oriented to left-handed play. My left hand sometimes goes into its coat pocket on its own, but other than that it's about as obedient as a housecat. ;)
<looks at nis’s comment> <looks at board>
<is puzzled> lol not sure what you mean @fallow fractal
His arcade pad is to the left of center. If it was a computer QWERTY keyboard, it would be mostly for the left hand.
And so the right side has the buttons you play on
Ok so now I finally think I see ... yep. Apologies, I had it oriented upside down in my head, which happens about 50% of the time
I thought the speaker was at the top, thus the buttons to the right
The way he has it set up, during performance I'd shove the entire case way to the right of center, on the underlying desktop, and reach way way to the right to operate the original synth module.
funny how you think it's matrix one but it's not
Really enjoyed your left-hand comment by the way, @fallow fractal
A disobedient left hand could get a man in a lot of trouble.
Second camera hooked up. and I'm able to do picture-in-picture in OBS. Had to move one to a USB 3 port to get enough bandwidth for both to work.
Now trying to get my blue yeti mic working...
Cut it twice and it's still too short.
Can't cut it longer
Ok looked it up and it’s a microphone made by Blue Designs, looks like a good quality mic
They should let you bring your own buttons to the Arcade, and bluetooth 'em into the house equipment. ;)
@eager sapphire I got gifted it a while back when we started a distributed D&D game.. but we ended up using headsets.
So it's been on my shelf for over a year.
Very cool @haughty quiver ! Nice enclosure design. Like the acrylic front panel.
so big mystery playbox
Nice show, John!
Agreed another fine show thanks John
@haughty quiver plays out the show like Prince.
Came out looking really slick
Power switch so that closing it powers down?
You coule take that into a board meeting...😁
Good looking finished project, @haughty quiver.
Thanks so much @fallow fractal !
The flush/deeper than flush parameter looks nice.
@inner spade I wish the purple one had had a Pocket Operator
“The Purple One” -> a reference to Prince?
@haughty quiver Can't wait to see you toss a project off-stage at the end of a stream...
LOL @ the eggplant icon
Don't forget, 10% off your order with the code BEATBOX
Cameras and mics all set up & working!
Planning a test stream at some point, @odd stream ?
I'm wondering about doing a Prusa i3 mk3 build when it arrives.
I'm defintely doing something when my CircuitPlayground shield PCBs arrive.
@inner spade LOL the way Prince threw the guitar at the end of While My Guitar Gently Weeps and it NEVER COMES DOWN
@haughty quiver yeah!
Nearly 50 years later and I’m still stunned at the sight of him setting a Fender on fire with lighter fluid on stage
how high is the ceiling in your shop, @haughty quiver ? 😉
@vernal mulch I have too much cat in my life already... and it's just one small cat. Amazing that one so small can make so much noise.
@inner spade @haughty quiver needs a stage hand in the rafters of his workshop to catch it.
I don't know if they still do this, but if you take an analog TV set that is cable-ready, and tune it to cable 57, but hook it up to an antenna, instead .. that's a common Ham Radio TV frequency. Just aim it at the nearest broadcast stations' tower -- that's a good bet that's where they'll be.
@fallow fractal @odd stream yes, these are press fit buttons, which is nice to work with, but not as safe against hoodlums yanking them out from the top ;)
@eager sapphire Biggest motivation for the new camera was to get better video quality for Show & Tell. The MacBook lid camera is trash.
Electrify the sides of the buttons as an anti-hoodlum measure
I'm doing 18 potentiometers, 8 DPDT toggles, and a 16x tact switch matrix this week, on a single panel (maybe) so this show was particularly apropos.
@eager sapphire It was so good that I figured "maybe I should do soem recording/streaming of project stuff". So now I have 2 cameras with a third planned.
John is thoughtful like that
thanks for coming to hang out, all -- I'm gonna go finish wiring up the Briefcase buttons
@odd stream so you’ll be doing a stream soon via your YouTube channel?
Thanks for the show John!
@eager sapphire I'm making plans... just set up a youtube channel on the weekend to set up OBS.
@eager sapphire I'll be doing some tests soon.
@haughty quiver Look forward to seeing the finished product (on show and tell next week I guess.)
Ok you have the perfect test audience here
thanks, will do @lavish patrol !
My videos would resemble The Blair Witch Project for their organization and camera work, I would think.
“Camera shake” -> “That’s just my cinematographic style”, is what I say
"I'm running away ... from the bear ... but I think he's gaining on me ... perhaps I shouldn't .. have used that cattle prod ... after a...."
No sequel, either.
Most of the film would be the title sequence
I thought OldCrow had the right idea last night for S&T. Does not appear on camera; made sure the visuals were interesting enough without a talking head hosting whatever else was going on in the video frame. Used voice-over.
That was a nice touch, I agree
Alright it’s a perfect 57F degrees here time for a walk
And the little frame foreshadowed what he was going to do with his timeslot, for a long time before he got his turn.
@fallow fractal I'll be using the overhead camera on Show & Tell quite a bit I think. It's so awkward trying to demo soemthing with a camera positioned to get your face.
@odd stream I've found both lighting and camera positioning to be quite a challenge. Bouncing light off white-painted walls helps some. Having multiple camera angles available would be quite nice.
I've noticed that in private video chat google hangouts that looking to the side to observe the other person as they speak directly to ones own self undermines the illusion of face to face conversation. Having the camera axial to the display is very helpful for the human factor, especially if looking for immediate feedback from the conversation partner.
One-way communication (one-to-many) probably doesn't suffer from this nearly as much.
@fallow fractal I've noticed that in 1-1 chats. The camera on my deck monitor is centered on the top and I will usually position the chat window directly below it. It does help. I'm still thinking about a third camera to use as a face cam at my bench.
If you're a fast talker (I don't remember you as such) a good camera on the face is imperative. Some people I have to watch (intently) to understand; others I can follow just fine audio-only. There's a big spread there.
It'll take some experimenting and fiddling but I'm looking forward to conquering a new frontier 😃
One thing I've noticed with Hangouts/Show&Tell is some people don't account for the fact that there's a bar of people cutting off the bottom portion of the display
I’ve noticed that at times, and try to keep it in mind.
@odd stream you could do this if you want to have multiple cameras https://labs.cognitive.microsoft.com/en-us/project-prague
@shell mason Cool, but 2 problems: specific camera, and Windows.
@odd stream well camera need depth sensor
the intel realsense camera what i linked works with it
You might be able to block off the bar section on your live camera display/monitor with a spare window (say to a terminal) to artificially simulate what everyone else sees of the cropped window. Maybe superimpose the bar itself with its correct content, somehow, by carefully resizing the various windows before showtime.
/uses whiteout correction fluid on the LCD display
@river peak Good catch. I'd noticed it but hadn't consciously processed wigo there.
It's definitely something to keep in mind. It's perfectly fine for showing people's faces, but it's just something that'll take a little thought when presenting: Putting stuff just a little higher to the camera.
the host can use controlroom like full view of the person who is presenting
I did a short text recording... this blue yeti mike picks up EVERYTHING! I need to wall mount it so it doesn't pick up every time I put the pliers on the benchtop. I also need to speak a bit louder. Anyone want to have a look and give feedback?
@odd stream I have the same mic 😃 hows it look?
Camera works great once I found something to switch it to manual focus.
Mike works great but picks up everything I put on the bench rather loudly. I think I just need to get it up off the bench.
@odd stream yeah i have it on an arm with a pop filter
Looking at arms on Amazon now.
arm with a shock asborer will work wonders
and get a pop filter
@odd stream Will you soon be armed? And dangerous?
Nice to have a cough switch on the mic audio, to mute while enduring a predictable respiratory event. ;)
Laughing naturally while using PTT is an art. ;) (push-to-talk)
@odd stream what camera did you get for show and tell?
@lethal lagoon Logitech 922x Pro Stream
@lethal lagoon One at my desk and one overhead at my bench.
@odd stream you could get those Intel Realsense cameras and made a switcher from it so you change the camera using hand signals so what show and tell see the camera what is active
Talk about over-engineering 😃
engineering to perfection
Glass isn't half full, it's engineered to be twice as big as it currently needs to be.
Glass isnt half fulll its full
It's overflowing, sprung a leak, and someone put iced coffee instead of water in it. They're our heroes.
even as liquid is half full but it's still full as other is air
@odd stream thanks, I’m considering one too - ooh background replacement, perfect for streaming vr adventures 😆
@lethal lagoon think using kinect to drop background
@lethal lagoon Only on Windows.
@lethal lagoon I.e. lost on me (I'm pretty exclusively on Linux... again)
@lethal lagoon I've never used Windows by choice. Apple ][ -> MS-DOS -> Linux -> MacOS -> and now Linux again.
@shell mason cool idea to use kinect
@odd stream same, windows only when necessary:)
you could use skeleton tracking for it
@lethal lagoon Oh yes, several years with SunOS afterMS-DOS
@odd stream as a designer I’ve been fully committed to the Apple ecosystem for a long time
I miss the clarity of the Steve Jobs days though
@lethal lagoon My dissappointment with Apple has been growing. A year ago I built a kilelr Linux workstation for most things. My iMac died a few months ago which moved even more activities to Linux. Now with the new camers, video chat/work is there as well. I'm still a devoted iPadPro/iOS user, though.
@lethal lagoon Same on both counts. Well said, "clarity"
@odd stream Linux has had amazing improvements over the years. I totally understand a decision to move to it with as well as it works out of the box now.
@clear matrix This time it's Ubuntu 17.x and it literally worked out of the box on cutting edge hardware. My first Linux was Slackware on a lap top installed from floppies. Probably mid-late 90s. Then it was RedHat on various hardware... none was what I'd call workign out of the box.
Right? Exactly.
Every so often over the years I'd give it a try and wonder why I bothered, then more and more it kept getting easier and easier and I'll admit to still being surprised when it just works.
Why
@fallow fractal why ??
Mike arm & shock absorber ordered & will be here Thursday. I'll be doing more video later in the week to see how that improves the sound quality (I.e. getting the mic off the bench)

Amazon Prime is really amazing at times. Mike arm & mount ordered around noon yesterday. Arrives about 10 this morning. Now installed. Downside? I now have 2 arms between my stool & my toolrack. Maybe that's just useful motivation to get what I need before starting to work/record.
Yep, definite plus for all the grippers, but wow, it sure eats up lab bench real estate.
Just bought those arms last week
Great show folks. Listened on the drive to Kissimmee. Hope you bring over the model 3 on Saturday for Maker Day :-
Made it really easy to tack-solder wires onto a thin PCB trace, by the way
Held everything exactly in place.
thanks for watching folks!
Another great show thanks guys
@rocky reef those volume controllers with trinket m0 is nice way to build modular keyboards
Multiple cameras tested and working in Hangouts!
@odd stream Are you going to show it off tonight?
Although... that might get difficult.
@river peak infinite camera feedback
"Here's this new camera... but to show it to you, I need to switch to this other camera.... and now I need to show you both of those cameras at the same time..."
Am I missing anything?
@river peak PCB versions, which turned out nicely.
@odd stream https://imgur.com/gallery/sUEF1hI
@odd stream They looked really cool and useful.
@river peak I find myself thinking about how to get the face on them... creative use of copper, soldermask, & silkscreen?
White silkscreen for the eyes. Copper for the pupils?
That's what I'm thinking
