that is a zepplin play list ....
lol
and guess what it starts with ... just epic.
My wife just told me to turn it down.
If it's too loud, your to old.
GAWD I love that music.
I wanna jump on my drums right NOW!
It's 9:30 pm and the wife ain't gonna go for that one bit.
don't forget to grab a old mostly empty bottle of rye and splash it on like you been drinking all night .... hahaha.
before you start that is.
But when the cats away, you can believe the mouse is at play.
yeah my neighbour just banged on the ceiling. hahaha.
Bummer, Have own house on acre. Vol;ume at 11 doesn't matter.
Yeah in a condo it does.
I know, been there, done that. Some day tho, you'll have your own place.

That helps.
Ah, ok, well, rock on... ><>

I wonder what the younger folks like to listen to these days?
Oh, lots of good stuff, Twenty One Pilots are pretty good. My daughter turned me on to them. Bill likes the heavy rock but John likes the old stuff like Rush and Pink Floyd.
There is an Australian band called Ice Jupiter Groove that like alot.
Yeah just checked in spotify what my daughter and neices are listening to.
mostly rap stuff.
at this time.
so since its halloween have to go watch a netflix movie.
kind of a tradition these days.

oh yeah you guys are still in summertime
Technically, copper doesn't rust (since rust is iron oxide). Copper does corrode or oxidize though, obviously.
Mars rusts though
any way to make PCB to space proof?
remilling after would be a bad idea. the mask is there to be solder repellant - esp. important on smd boards
I wonder if you could use a uv sensor and integrate the signal to calibrate the light source to determine how long you need to irradiate the pcb.
I'm way too lazy to do any of this... ๐
i was thinking as you can 3D print cubesats structure so the PCB in them to cover them for space weather
there are iron-on sheets you can use as silk-screen - you use a laser printer on the sheet then use an iron to apply the silk-screen layer
the toner is the adhesive
think maker cubesats
this cubesat was 3Dprinted http://www.goodnewsfinland.com/reaktor-sends-javascript-into-orbit/
@open girder Industries If filament absorbs๏ปฟ too much moisture, it gets difficult, if not impossible to print with. I get that. But does it affect the processed (heated) filament as far as strength?
@rocky reef have you found flat connector like those HDMI ones?
@shell mason flat usb connectors?
I think he means usb connectors joined with a flat ribbon cable
something like this but with usb connectors
@shell mason ah yep, I'd try searching aliexpress and see if there's a manufacturer. If you find some, please link and we'll take look for potential stocking ๐
I think Limor sourced the HDMI ones from the taobao website
@hard hollow I was thinking if you can use same usb holes but have Pi zero in the backplate so if there is bend ones for USB
ah yea, we sourced from here: https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=543545012531
@shell mason ah for the boombox?
@shell mason hmm maybe but the speaker boxes may still get in the way of the boards. I'll play around with the placement and see how much space we get ๐
as speaker bonnet with flat design could make it more flat
@shell mason yea and the headers can get pretty tall, even with the PICO hat solder directly to the GPIO https://www.instagram.com/p/BawgiUYH3Sk/?taken-by=ecken
@hard hollow when you make them level it could able to make GPIO headers flatter?
like that tripler for feathers
@shell mason yeah i can get it flatter. just ditch the female headers and seat them flush. removing female headers are easier said than done tho
@shell mason yeah something like the pi hat hacker maybe https://www.adafruit.com/product/3182
that could help

hi all
Hi!
aloha from the sunny Switzerland
Howdy @odd stream, how are ya?
Hey there
Hi!
Hello!
hi all!
hey
Evening! My favorite evening of the week! ๐
@brazen grove if the invite didn't go, you can use this (this is just for folks who are going to do live video on show and tell) https://hangouts.google.com/hangouts/_/gpfdmctjtzfvxhg7b7hc5zfzvee
Let's be honest. If you let your copper oxidize, eventually it'll get to be the typical soldermask green
Love the #failart
@analog acorn Hey!
To err is human, to fail you need a computer (or so a bumper sticker told me in the early 2000s).
Really awesome to see the whole process on how to work with the soldermask. They also came out really nice!

@haughty quiver You must have really been shocked when that happened.
Ooooh! That thing is cool!
Those wire snaps are truly solid, another raving recommendation here.
๐
So pretty!
Circuit Playground Snowglobe is awesome
thanks, it was such a great fit, i was psyched!
@haughty quiver What is that plastic container called that you used for your snowglobe?
@rapid hornet So exciting!
Scott thank you, the cap touch on the M0 is working well ๐
this one is a "Make it Christmas" snowglobe from Hobby Lobby.
DEVO!
Phil B. looks AMAZING
play Pocket Calculator!
Phil B. rocks!
@haughty quiver Thank you very much, there's actually one about 8 minutes away from me!
super, should be 40% off of about $5 ; )
@haughty quiver If I remember correctly, using mineral oil will keep the glitter suspended for much longer. It's also messier if you want to keep changing it up.
Oh $5 is a very fair base price
@clear matrix yes! I added glycerin, but not sure yet what the best proportion is
yay @brazen grove !
@haughty quiver Glycerin! I thinks that's what I was thinking of!
Either that or both work.
I believe calcium chloride works well as a water thickener.
@brazen grove Looks great!
Glycerin is great, I've used it for food safe hydraulic fluid before in a coffee tamper project, and it make the best base for fake blood ; )
Bruce Campbell wouldn't agree. I think they used buckets and buckets of corn syrup.
@clear matrix haha, OK, I should say "one of the better, not too messy bases for fake blood" ; )
"food safe hydraulic fluid"...not often you hear those words together. is glycerin == corn syrup?
@haughty quiver would love to see a snow globe with a miniature magnetic stirrer. No shaking needed.
@haughty quiver Exactly!
@brazen grove that's such a cool project
@brazen grove so cool!
@brazen grove totally awesome project
@waxen thistle Well, I've defeated my Haskell demons (for work), made some tweaks to my smarthome system, and have been diving into the internals of MP/CP. Fun times ๐
@odd stream That's ALL you've done? Slacker.
"We need to use tricks." is the phrase that pays!
@river peak Well, that was yesterday and today.
Oh man, I've read about some of the tricks that were on the Game Boy/NES/SNES/etc
INSANE
@brazen grove Yay!
@haughty quiver couldn't agree more, working on a trick for the grbl gshield currently
I'll have to check at Michael's for those snow globe DIY things.
ZBONES!
๐ ๐
lol nice
The pumpkin changed to orange color and for a short second I thought it had caught on fire
Yeah... I was wondering about that
the stranger things lights projects have to be my new favorite project
Nice phone mod!
That's excellent. Stranger Things lights projects are the new "doom working on gadget x"
I love the IoT versions of the alphabet
@haughty quiver Soon: Doom working on Stranger Things Lights
@haughty quiver I like 'em because they're more extendable than the Doom on X, like how IOT/kb/maybe morse code fun
Oooh, I covet his component "wall"
beautiful
"Club Solitude"!!!
Collin has crystalized his idea...
I especially like the cyan and magenta color mode
๐ฌ
yay! S-E-M! ๐
@glossy glacier "New"
Live demo gremlins!
that lets you solder really small SMT resistors ๐
love the lighting
I definitely covet those control panels
I've always wanted to build some like that... but they need a PURPOSE
Form follows function
I have nothing that really deserves a control panel, and it makes me a little sad
Can the electron microscope export an image?
@river peak Home-built linear accelerator. ๐
@analog acorn Heh, yeah. But it's unlikely that I'd use it in any sense of often
True
@rapid hornet I see a cat!
@rapid hornet Kitty!
@glossy glacier Amazing!

great work everyone and also great to see you @brazen grove !
That was an amazing S&T.
@rapid hornet your cat is adorable! ๐ป

@pearl shoal Export implies computer... This thing currently has no computer on it...
I can point a camera at the screen though, and capture images that way.
@glossy glacier What sort of signal does the screen take?
Might be able to rig up a splitter or something that leads to a capture card
@river peak I have a digital interface for this SEM, I am missing the computer interface card right now though.
Once I get that though...
Is that something that's easily acquirable?
the SEM is so cool
And is it even compatible with modern hardware?
I am Gaurdian... ><> ๐
Adam, if you get it working 100% is there any danger they'll ask for it back?
I assume they killed it and upgraded - but it's still and awsome piece of kit
@rapid hornet ive getting into whaleboat rowing (sweep rowing), went out at 6pm and everyone had led wristbands...possibly gonna do a el-wire/neopixel gloves/vest
@willow pollen I have already been doing other work for them. They have some other transmission electron microscopes that I have been servicing for them.
was gonna do a life jacket with LEDs but realized that's a horrible idea
@gaunt plume EL-wire lifejacket, with high-voltage glory ๐
@river peak It will be a windows XP computer...
stick a screwdriver across the power supply and blow a fuse... "oh no! it's broken... maybe I can stick it in the van?"
@gaunt plume and an extra toaster strapped to the back
@brazen grove considering I row thru the winter, it'll be a VERY cold hi-voltage glory
at least you don't have to worry about drowning
@glossy glacier Your hardware looks a little older than WinXP, surprised it works with something that new
@brazen grove i'd like to avoid "high voltage glory" (totally going to use that phrase for now on) if possible
@willow pollen One of them has a damaged 120,000V power supply that is currently down, so that's fun. I think I found the cap that took it out though.
I think they're ulexite crystals. AKA "TV rock."
@river peak It's a 4PI SEM interface if you want to look it up. I have the SEM interface and cables, but I dont have the PCIe card yet. This things is from the 1970-80s, the interface is an aftermarket thing. I think I might have a source on a card though.

@glossy glacier Ahh, OK! So it's a standard, that someone built stuff to interperet. Makes sense as to why it's so new.
hey guys glad to see you are alright.
Woot! @paper peak FTW!
Too bad I threw out my smoked ESP32 Feather
@open girder Thank you for being so great. Has been a tough week and you guys always help make things a whole lot cheerful. Spread the love everyone!
It's so exciting to see the work you guys are doing with Circuit Python. Also very fun to use
glad you are excited @split gazelle !
Here's an example of some crazy high magnification stuff that I can do when I am not trying to talk and run a SEM at the same time.
OMG!
That's awesome, @glossy glacier !
@rapid hornet I'm sort of tempted to put up a bounty for some display stuff, but I want to wait until you guys are "Done" with the M4 stuff
Also @glossy glacier That's awesome
@glossy glacier what's that?
yeah. there's definitely a logo on that snake scale
@rapid hornet [Aside: your cat is adorable!]
@river peak file an issue in case someone wants to come along and pick it up
@analog acorn she knows it too
@rapid hornet It's not necessarily anything that deserves an "issue" - if anything it'd be a completely separate library/etc

@rapid hornet That's PERFECT

@fallow fractal with DMCA and DRM that's already moot

good lord.... bad apostrophe
SeeSaw looks cool... But out of stock ๐ฆ
@eager sapphire @inner spade These aren't the water cooled ones, these are the water cooled ones.
@harsh bone may not have been enabled yet
@open girder I'm looking forward to SeeSaw so I can replace my ATTiny84-as-I2C for a few of my devices. It'll be fantastic.
ESP8266 has i2c...
@inner spade LF357H
@glossy glacier yikes. what does the +PS and -PS look like for those?
Is there a DAC on the SeeSaw chip?
Darn, thought tht might have been a new SIMH on that FONA board
I need that
@harsh bone in software, not hardware, IIRC
Message Queue Telemetry Transport. Doesn't everyone know that? ๐
best thing to come out of IBM for a while
so it can do pretty high QPS things if you do it right
Eclipse before that, and the PC. Once a decade whether they want to or not.
@fallen rivet ... All I know if the Huzzah Feather ESP8266... HW I2C, no?
@harsh bone I2C on esp is in software
ok
I thought that there were dedicated pins but that the I2C was software bitbanged, so it only goes to 100KHz.
Why I come here ๐
it's definitely not obvious!
@fallen rivet they are probably just designated pins to standardize on
or just lazily hardcoded, or maybe they have special drive characteristics
like open-drain outputs, dunno.
in circuitpython we have our own bitbang code for it
for space reasons?
using our own means we can share it amongst the ports
@inner spade I think only 20v... I think.
ah, sure
I wonder if a spin coater would do a better job of coating a PCB
we expose it with the bitbangio module
That's it... I'm naming my next dog BitBangio
would be nice to be able to 3DP-on solder mask
inkjet more likely though
wasn't Bitbangio a Phil Collins song from the 90's ?
There was a really nice rastar scanning UV laser setup on Hackaday
so, spincoat the board with the resin, then use registration holes to put it in the UV laser setup
exactly, that's the way to go if you have the hardware setup
I kind of wonder how hard it would be to make a little processing line...
Single Hammer Header Male - Solderless Raspberry Pi Connector https://www.adafruit.com/product/3662
Hammer Header Female - Solderless Raspberry Pi Connector https://www.adafruit.com/product/3663
hmm.. wish those would have been around when i was learning lol
for schools and prisons
so, predrill 3 registration holes in a larger panel (like 4x6"), then have it get auto spin coated with resist on both sides, UV lasered... rinsed. etched. rinsed. back in the spin coater for solder resist. laser. rinse.
now i just want better irons and air tools!!!

What kind of device would I need to deep fry corn dogs via solar power
oh man, that seesaw demo is HOT
now I'm wondering where they sourced those displays...
So, does this thing depend on HW I2C?... Is the Bit-Banged / SW interface too slow?
Q: Does/can the SeeSaw send interrupts, or would another GPIO need to be carved out for that and software support added?
@harsh bone it probably doesn't. it would just be less responsive
Q: Could the seesaw be used for/as canbus to i2c interface for automotive projects?
The SeeSaw would just be like any other I2C slave and use its HW I2C for that, no?
@bleak wigeon I don't think the SAMD line has CAN support
Might even be able to get it to be a I2C mux
you'd have to "bit bang" CAN.
there are dedicated CAN chips, that also do the voltage adjustment
yeah, the PHY part
@fallen rivet I don't remember
@open girder There are photo shops that will print on aluminium plates. You could totally sell your factory pictures printed as art that way....
ESP32 has CAN buss support...
@open girder Have you guys considered doing something like Spark Fun's dumpster dive? You could write off the stuff and donate the funds from it to charity or do something else useful with it
ESP32 has everything in it! Probably pot stickers in there too
I want to make a game for iOS using the feather bluefruit LE. Any way I can do that?
@fallen rivet : except USB ๐
@round willow like flappy bird?
Itโs a water monitoring game
ESP8266 was mentioned as not having HW i2C.... just SW
Its monitoring water and competing with other people
@harsh bone it'd work with seesaw
ok
How does DPI differ from SPI ? Can you show a demo if possible. there was a short clip but not that detailed
What about the demo?
@open girder Glad that you recognize the value of preserving history. It will help ground your business as well as guide it in the future.
@inner spade "Those that ignore history are doomed to repeat it"?
She saw SeeSaws by the sea shore.
@pliant summit she may not have had it handy
And put them in the store.
@river peak Hmmm. I've heard that before...
too bad i don't know the number
I wish high pixel count DSI display planels were more prevalent and cheap (really only available in high production scenariors)

that is where i was told by a senior enigneer at sony torrone "make robot friend, not robot slave, not robot enemy"
Sony isn't tops in many areas any longer, but they were one of the best in robot dogs and humanoid robot companion development. Now it seems those are going to get the axe (maybe they'd open source 'em? Good will and all?!)... "Continuing the restructuring in its electronics business, the company said it would end its Aibo robot line, stop development of its Qrio robot, stop development and manufacturing of plasma televisions, and stop selling in-car entertainment products in Japan. It will also kill its Qualia line of pricey, high-specification products." Link. Here are photos of some good times and memories with AIBOs and QRIOs. We will miss you guys.

@odd stream HAH. Oh, and now I'm sad.
I happened (for unrelated reasons) to move back (home) to Canada at teh beginnign of September last year. So I got to watch election nioght in disbelief from afar.
@odd stream I keep trying to convince myself that it's only temporary and we'll be better for it in the long run, but some days are harder than others.
@severe inlet I'm not sure we'll be truly better, but I do remind myself that it is temporary. Hopefully more temporary than it could be...
...
recieved("..."); result is coming that it is a test right for stream

Houston, we are go
Hey, we could invert that chip and use it in winter to heat up the cocoa!
We'll need a servo-driven umbrella.
I've been looking to get into peltier cooling - summer is coming
I'm downunder
I almost melted that kind of power jack when I was drawing 3 amps at 12v - my contactless thermometer said it was at 42 deg C
Why not just use a BUC convertor instead of building that supply
lazer cut design looking
Also, those blade edges are sharp
(At high speeds)
Thatโs hilarious (and a little sad) that the screaming cauldron definitely worked
is the circuit pwm for the fan and cooler? does do temp sense too?
soon john need to design back case for wiring and parts
John just invented a new word: squozen.๐
that wiring dont look so clean
Wait now, didnโt those FETs get hot? Or was that the previous generation, using bipolar transistors?
not ouzo drinks for that then. right Andy
@shell mason ๐
Those look like clips used by the phone industry. I've seen them before.
yeah, I've used those clips for the phone line
LOL @ ma Bell & statute of limitations :^)
There was a whole pile of them next to a phone pole down the street.
they're filled with petroleum jelly to prevent corrosion and water ingress
I guess John need some cable ties
Blue tape is your friend, too.
Bye.
Yet another great show in the vault thanks John
what kind of heat does it dump into the surroundings?
Perhaps in a couple of months, revisit the design to invert the Peltier junction and create a Hot Cocoa DrinkBot?
the big heatsink transfers pretty much the same amount of heat as we remove from the beverage into the air
@eager sapphire just reverse the polarity
love that
Exactly
someone mentioned using an H-bridge so we can do it in software
@ocean musk had that idea, too , IIRC
or was it @inner spade
yes, that was it
This is great stuff. That pump can be used for aquarium water levels, plant water distribution. Oh the ideas...
it's the same style of pump they use on dialysis machines and IV pumps in the hospitals
Yes, that pump, a float sensor, and a source of distilled water to top off evap
@eager sapphire That's exactly what I was thinking.
Still trust float sensors over the metallic ones - those get coated or corroded or both and one wrong reading the wrong direction and yikes
the metalic ones cause electrolysis
The only thing John is the 12 volts. Where does that come from?
ah, regulated power supply
Oh, I see, an external unit.
I didn't show the supply, it is what I plugged into the 3.5mm female screw terminal breakout jack
yes
Do you know what the current draw on the 12 volts is by any chance?
you know, you could get a pair of those pc water cooling kits and put a peltier between the two waterblocks and make yourself an airconditoner for your desk
Wooo, that's a lot of electrons...
yes, loads of them!
it's the electrons that pump the heat
a pc power supply is more than enough to power it
yes, that would do it nicely
Bingo!!! I found one. https://www.vellemanusa.com/products/view/?id=350599
This kit is meant as an auxiliary or as a permanent power supply for all common Velleman kits based on a stabilized DC voltage between 3 and 30V provided that the consumption does not exceed 3A. Of course this power supply unit can also be used for other purposes. Be replacing the trimmer by a potentiometer, it may even be used as an adjustable power supply unit. Supplied with heatsink.
Get an old Wall Wart from a big HP printer that will supply the power and walla.
I've used Velleman Power Supply Kits a lot. Normaly the 1 amp version. They work great!
whoops, @heavy siren "input voltage: 9 to 30V AC (depending on the desired output voltage)"
Radio Shack used to sell them at a decent price. I scarffed them all up cheap when they went belly-up.
@heavy siren you can buy a pc powersupply for the same price but will supply more amps and have all the protections
@dire bane Right! You plug in a brick with say 24V @ 1500ma or some such thing and adjust the trimmer for 12 volts out. I like to put a pot in for the trimmer and bring it out to be able to adjust it on the fly.
You can use AC or DC for the input. Full Wave Rectified. oops. My bad. This one doesn't.
the one you show also doesnt have it's own fan or enclosure
They made to put into a project.
Speaking of which, bugs me to realize all of the PCs Iโve sent off for recycling without pulling a single power supply from one.
I have all my old PC's. Even the one from 1982 serial 352.
I've pulled many fans from failed pc powersupplies
Pulled the drives, have a nice platter and magnet collection. Bunch of fans. Not one supply. DOH!
Since Iโm already a pack rat when it comes to electronics, this is surprising.
I still have my old TRS-80. Way too nostalgic to let that one go.
If ever there is a badge for going off-topic, it should have a picture of me on it.
๐
Hey, shows over, what the heck, a little power supply talk never hurt anyone, right?
Fair enough
I know. Built many.
First thing I built, I think, long ago, when gas was...like cents per gallon
We could compare dinosaur stories LOL I know
Peace brother
you know, that double watercooler kit I though of could be used as an A/C for a tent when camping - you can use a fold-out solar panel to power it
@dire bane There ya go. Another great idea.
Where do you find supply of Peltier plate?
@terse sparrow I got it here: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1335
here's the bare module: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1331
Adafruit, yes of course, they have a lot of cool products, some are simultaneously very hot.
@haughty quiver Had to drop out early today but wanted to thank you for the show! I always get some useful design idea and technique nuggets from your live workshop sessions.
Very glad to hear it, @inner spade and likewise itโs great having your input in the chat!
thanks everyone who came along for the ride on building the Chilled Drinkibot, the guide is now live here: https://learn.adafruit.com/chilled-drinkibot/overview
well done.
(that's like having Tea and No Tea at the same time, for all you Infocom Hitchhiker's Guide text adventure fans.)
Speaking long ago, as we were, of water level sensors - came across a simple / clever design for a capacitive level sensor. Electronic, yes, but the metals are not exposed to water; as water depth increases, capacitance between two insulated plates increases (approx 200pF/inch). Easy enough to measure this on an Arduino, and use various level values to trigger fill/drain.
(The 200pF/inch rating was close to a typical value for the relatively simple designs seen on YouTube - the actual scale for pF/in depends on the size and spacing of the plates and dielectric coefficient of the liquid being measured, as youโd expect)
@haughty quiver In 1986 or so roommate and I wrote a Z-machine "decompiler" because certain branching elements in the HHGttG game were too obscure. I distinctly remember a key element being "feed sandwich to dog" early in the game in order to not ultimately fail the game many hours later. ๐
Yes! @void widget this was a plot element in the book, too. That dog would avoid eating the entire Vogon fleet (which was tiny) if it had the sandwich or something like that.
It is not explicitly in the book: that was the whole problme ๐
oh, i see!
they mention the dog and the fleet, but nothing about a sandwich ๐
so you and your roommate were able to decompile it from the floppy disk and solve that puzzle?
yes, we wrote the decomplier in Z80 assembly language on a CP/M machine
@void widget That brings back memories of my old TRS-80 Color Computer that I had a Z80 cartridge for ๐
@haughty quiver This was the Z80 computer, http://www.retrotechnology.com/restore/ampro_bd1.jpg
ooooh, nice!
I'll have to open that old machine and show the RAMdisk we made for it in 1985
it would bank-switch 16K chunks of RAM in from an additional 128K
Oh wow, Wikipedia just told me that Pac-Man arcade games used a Z80 as the CPU.
yeah, I had a pacman logic board at one time
it was a but tricky to rig to display on a TV
~bit
as it had analog RGB and separate sync for a real monitor
the pacman board had a curious code descrambler daughter board on it, I guess game companies had a habit of dissassembling each others code
so the ROMs were not straight object code, but some hashed data
@haughty quiver As I recall, Z80 was quite popular in arcade games of the time.
I built a set of runway lights and loaded it onto my feather. Than I tested it out in the back yard and airplanes thought my back yard was a runway, in which they could land. Is there a way to change the sequence of the lights so it doesn't look like a run way.
What kind of runway lights? Meatball on an aircraft carrier?
I'm not sure I made my model with standard breadboard size leds. Apparently when the fog sets in, it magnifies the mini version so it looks like a life size airport really don't know. Something about how the light hits the fog.
So I need a sensor to shut off the lights period if there is any fog at all.
Fog or smoke will diffuse lights and spread out lights like a searchlight in the clouds.
I live near the top of a mountain where there is a lot of fog
Ok, what is your setup, a feather board controlling a bunch of regular leds...and placed along your driveway?
Right. There is no runway in my driveway. In fact there is nothing there. When a plane lands it should land in the airport, than the lights should continue to guide passengers to my stores where they can quickly spend all of there money and go home.
So the lights are essentially dynamic way finding singage that change based on whatever plane someone came in on
than when there is fog you cannot tell who came in on what plane.
You might want to look into marketing methods in systems like Adsense to target specific demographics, in your case determining what the appropriate signage is for the people that come to visit.
No I just need a sensor that can detect when there is too much fog to see the sign.
Not sure which one would do the job
A humidity sensor combined with a basic light sensor would probably do the trick
I've been building websites 15 years I know what to put onto the sign. But what happens when they cannot see the sign or take a wrong turn
Ya but say the sign is 200 yards away. Where do I put the sensors
I guess I could point a laser at a photo resistor from 200 yards but what if a bird or bug came across the front of the sensor
I could give each person a radio, and set up a series of beacons but that wouldn't work because I don't have the money for each person to have a radio.
Infarerd don't do very good in the fog. It looks like its snowing in the infrared dimension.
Therefore, you get a whiteout if you use infared in fog
I need to get a heavy duty fog machine and run some tests I guess. There is something about the refraction of light in the fog that seems like, it could be possible to use it to project a completely alternate reality.
This looks interesting but I know if I read it I will spend the next 5 months learning everything there is to know about fog, which I wasn't trying to do just hoping for a quick solution
@sweet kernel How accurate are weather services with fog conditions? accuweather and wunderground have API that you can use. Basically, a branch off of the "smart mirror" projects....
How accurate for your LOCAL fog conditions, is what I meant.
Ya those services won't be able to provide the needed information. I need to be able to automatically tell if there is fog, and relay it to my system the very instant that the sign is not visible. It only takes a split second for someone to drive into a whiteout. In fog and I suppose a similar effect occurs in the snow, but maybe solving the fog problem will also solve the snow problem. . Currently, there needs to be 24/7 supervision of fog conditions.
Imagine driving down the interstate at 80 MPH, than within a split second visibility is zero and you cannot see the road in front of you.
I learned how to drive in these conditions, but people who come in from out of town. Never seen fog or snow before drive right into it without heeding the warnings.
@sweet kernel maybe you could use the metars report for the local airport? https://aviationweather.gov/metar?gis=off
could either use the visiblity part, look for FG for fog, etc.
@strange mantle nice and thanks for the aviation weather
Yep, definitely bookmarked that link, @strange mantle
@sweet kernel could you use a humidity sensor? Combined with other forecast data, it seems like that could predict fog with at least some accuracy.
Snow, on the other hand, would not be detected with that
Looking online, it appears that if the current temperature is within 4F (2.5C), of the dew point, fog forms. Combine that with humidity/light/wind sensors, and you may be able to pretty reliably detect fog, or at the very least heavily overcast/rainy conditions.

Okay !
Hi all, I have a conflict on Thursday so I'll be on after the Ruiz Bros. tomorrow 12:30pm ET
Hi all, I don't know if this is the right place to drop my question (Mike advice me to look here), but has someone managed a working connection with an ethernet module (for example the WIZ820io) in combination with MicroPython/CircuitPython (for example the Feather Huzzah/Feather M0 Express)? For my project I need to set up a telnet connection <> Uart Tx/Rx. The physical connection isn't the problemen, but it's my lack of driver experience (if any exists).
With kind regards, Jeroen
hi @fallow fractal I don't know of anyone doing it with CircuitPython (there is a #circuitpython-dev channel too). someone may have done it with micropython though
Hi thx, I will asked in both channels, relised this is prob. the wrong channel :) As ever, thx for your Swift answer ;)
no problem!

This soldering jig was originally designed to help soldering GPIO headers (male or female) onto a Raspberry Pi Zero.
It's been adapted slightly so that it can also be used when soldering male or female headers onto other similar size (but thicker) boards such as HATs or pHATs.
UPDATE:
Since originally publishing this jig, I have updated the design to allow it to also be used with 90 degree male headers.
The Version 2 stl file will therefore work with male and female straight GPIO headers, and 90 degree male headers.

kinda sounds like the grove or qwiic system
"Being a software guy..." shows a bazillion awesome hardware projects @devout talon
I think I saw that on hackaday.io
Challenge: Cool interactive electronic projects are hard to build, require a lot of esoteric knowledge and aren't modular and abstracted like software. The effort to scale up your idea to a something shareable is even harder - so many cool ideas never make it past breadboards.
Solution: Modular, interoperable components on a common field-bus that can be wired in any order and work with clean software interfaces. Now cool projects are more like Legos!
Aspiration: Young makers will be able to share their projects with each other, creating a virtuous cycle of inspiration. The barrier to create cool things will become lower.
License: Open-source hardware + software.
Status: Concept in testing
@brazen grove Yeah !
@waxen thistle it's really helpful! The tripod mount frame is from B&H Photo, the tripod is an old one from Polaroid :) I use it for chat during my livestreams, evernote, and more and more documentation
