shell mason

@open girder those mics are cool when asking question so you raise hand and mic is throw to you and you catch it and ask the question

You're a real inspiration Adafruit. Making the maker world a better place.

glossy glacier

#

Really interesting talk. Lots in there to think about. I especially liked the notion that being a woman (or "different") meant it was easier to breach expectations

frail flame
#

Great show.

#

@glossy glacier I'll be happy to do that!

hard hollow

shell mason

mic tap?

hard hollow

just a tiny tap

discord's stream overlay only works when it wants too sparky

WHY U NO WORKY WIRECAST!?

shell mason
hard hollow
#

what is this!? week 3 or 4 of doing discord overlay and still have no clue how to get it to work ๐Ÿ˜•

shell mason

no guide how to get it work

weird thing is that the URL works fine in browser, just doesn't load in wirecast

shell mason
#

Grumpy Wirecast

hard hollow
#

heh totes

#

i think im going to have to switch out discord for the youtube chat ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

eager sapphire
#

Is there a fixed URL to find the 3D Hangouts stream on youtube, or do we just find it by looking on the Adafruit user page?

hard hollow
eager sapphire
#

Ok thanks Noe

eager sapphire
#

Is discord's output connected to wirecast via "streamkit overlay"?

hard hollow
#

yep, it was embedded via URL

#

that would load fine in chrome browser but wouldn't in wirecast

eager sapphire
#

Do you get any kind of meaningful or meaningless (the usual) error message from discord?

#

Ok

#

Roger that

#

(Looking up wirecast+discord issues)

hard hollow
#

nope no errors, the overlay just stayed stuck "loading" indefinitely sparky :

#

TBH, this happens every week but normally kicks in after 5min or so of standy

eager sapphire
#

Saw something online about a nominal delay streaming to youtube (because of bandwidth tests done by google) but so far nothing on that symptom with discord chat

#

If it works fine in chrome, that eliminates a whole mess of potential issues with the streamkit

#

A note on discordapp support suggests that "it says #loading because the channel you chose has images/files that were directly uploaded to discord instead of as a link. The only way to fix it is to delete all those images"

#

I don't know if that applies to your situation, but it's the closest I could get, so far, to your symptoms

#

According to that same site, this image loading bug was fixed some time around Oct 16, 2016

#

YMMV.

#

This kind of thing ONLY HAPPENS when you approach a live event. Murphy's law.

glossy glacier
#

@heavy plinth The cost of the hardware is not the end all be all of hardware in the maker community. In many cases, the support and software that goes along with a board is way more valuable to the end user than the hardware itself (eg: circut playground). You could buy a aurdrino clone or an adafruit clone from a vendor on alibabah, but you would be forgoing a lot the the support that you get along with it. Support cost money, so you have to sell the hardware for more than you would if you were just trying to break even on the hardware side.

heavy plinth
#

Jaden smith asks the best questions

alpine nova
#

@river peak well, i have no clue where to even begin with that

river peak
#

All the buttons likely go to microswitches. You'd have to connect those to the GPIOs

alpine nova
#

and put the ble feather inside?

river peak
#

The trackball likely goes to IR sensors or Hall Effect Sensors or something along those lines, so you'd have to both connect those and figure out how they work/measure

#

Yep

#

You could probably hook the internal battery up to the feather

#

Since feathers have LiPo charging circuits

alpine nova
#

hmmm, not sure that's a project i want to take on. the thing should just work right! i mean, it retails for $50

glossy glacier
river peak
#

@alpine nova Well yes. It SHOULD work.

#

Have you contacted Logitech and complained?

alpine nova
#

something tells me it's my system - too much connected when performing

#

no, but that's a good idea. i usually try to figure it out myself because cs can only help so much

river peak
#

A mouse should be one of the last things to start acting up, really

alpine nova
#

i don't always have it on when i start up. should i?

#

oh nevermind - i misread

#

yes, you are right about that

#

i think ultimately it would be best if it was straight bluetooth. i have definitely noticed as my show progresses, the midi, connected via usb, gets more and more finicky and sometimes stops working altogether til i pull the usb cord and replug it. usb is known for it's issues.

river peak
#

That seems mildly annoying

alpine nova
#

mildly is putting it mildly

river peak
#

A hacky solution for a problem that shouldn't exist: A USB "Extension" cable with a button that temporarily disconnects it.

#

Instead of unplugging and re-plugging, you just hit the button and it disconnects/reconnects

alpine nova
#

that's a good idea

river peak
#

Save you a few fractions of a second at the very least

alpine nova
#

problem is i'm not always aware the midi isn't cooperating until it stops working. it might be running really bad for a while first. i'd prob end up resetting every few minutes. if i could program it to do that it might be useful - though that'd prob require another usb connect for arduino or whatever. btw, i am also using arduino during my show to motorize a lazy susan, but am running off of batteries.

river peak
#

Well, a circuit board could be made. USB one end, USB other. ATTiny or something in the middle, powered off the USB with, say, a transistor on each USB wire going to the "OUT"

#

Set it to a timer and it'd automatically reset it

alpine nova
#

i will consider this idea, but ultimately i feel like i am putting band aids on top of band aids until i create my all inclusive control center. i have a dream to build my own custom portable control center for my lightshows - sort of like an audio mixing board to a sound engineer, but with software, displays, media server, and input keyboard all part of device. it is a huge project that overwhelms me every time i start thinking about it in depth as i am not an engineer or programmer.

#

i do appreciate your effort to help me resolve this small mouse problem @river peak . i will have to weigh out the amount of effort i want to put into something that obviously should work, and wether it is my busy system causing the problems or the usb/bluetooth receiver.

river peak
#

That is precisely how you become an engineer and programmer, though!

#

Find a project. Make it.

#

Repeat.

alpine nova
#

that is true, but i move soooo slowwww with this stuff. i struggle with the coding and what i know about electricity, well, it's coming along. i do know worlds more now than a few years ago.

river peak
#

I had an arduino for maybe a year or two and didn't do anything with it and didn't think about anything with it aside from "I can do neat things"

#

Then I saw a thing, thought "I can make a digital version of that!" and two years later I'm working on building up a company on electronics and stuff that I've designed.

#

Inspiration provides a LOT of, well, inspiration.

alpine nova
#

i've got a beagle black bone like that. i've started acquiring all kinds of little microcomputers and components, yet i have no idea what i'm doing

#

right on

river peak
#

I have a Raspberry Pi 1B, 2, 3, Zero, and ZeroW. And still haven't really used any of them for anything.

#

They're far too mcuh power for the stuff I do.

alpine nova
#

well, i guess that's how i got started. i needed to motorize my lazy susan a couple years ago and got myself an uno. i made the project pretty quick but it's still in proto stage and i think it will always be

#

i want a pi, but can't justify til i have the specific project for it

river peak
#

Heh, yeah

#

I also have an Orange Pi One and an Orange Pi PC Plus

#

But those have specific purposes.

alpine nova
#

it is all about inspiration - that and necessity

river peak
#

I'm making (Slooooowly) a D&D gaming table

#

Player stations will have Android mini-PCs

#

Was going to use the OPi One because it's $10

#

but the PC Plus is $23ish, and comes with eMMc, so it doesn't need an SD card. Also has more USB ports, more RAM.... and I'd pay $10-$12 for a decent SDcard anyawy

alpine nova
#

that's cool. i'm constantly seeing things that could be done diff with an arduino or pi, but i can barely handle one project at a time

#

0pi = pi zero?

river peak
#

OPi = Orange Pi

alpine nova
#

ah

river peak
#

They're similar to Raspberry Pi, but crucial difference is that they use the Allwinner H3 processor

#

Which has the aptly-named H3Droid Android OS for

#

i have so many projects i'd like to do, but can't figure out the best pieces to use. i was recently trying to get my garage door online and failed at getting ethernet shield working. i have to pick that back up

On my Arduino GRANDE i had a working reset and all the pins were broken out to the banana jacks on the giant headers. That's my goal as I refine this one, except to move to 1/4" phono jacks/plugs.

#

@waxen thistle yes, the 1000C powerboost.

shell mason
#

@haughty quiver now just make a version from metro express giant one that add translutent and neopixels to it so the logo lights up

haughty quiver
#

For feather projects I haven't needed the powerboost, @waxen thistle just battery in to jst

waxen thistle
#

@haughty quiver Thanks ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

haughty quiver
#

@shell mason that would be cool!

#

@glossy glacier love the giant breadboard

#

@strange mantle I tried the gum. It was not good.

strange mantle
#

tried and failed?

haughty quiver
#

it turned to dust in my mouth. then there was a vinyl aftertaste.

strange mantle
#

ah. i think at that point you were suppose to ride a giant worm into the sunset.

shell mason
#

what if you cant ride a giant worm but it's mining the dust particles or generate power from the sand

waxen thistle
#

The gum was the spice.

heavy siren
#

@haughty quiver I can't wait for the Motor Driver Shield. At 10x, that'll turn some torque I'll bet. ๐Ÿ˜‰

haughty quiver
#

@heavy siren not kidding -- that's exactly the first shield I'm planning to make! The idea is to use one of our real MotorShields on it and drive some servos to feather the throttle on a gas powered model plane engine...

inner spade
#

@heavy siren @haughty quiver I can't wait to see where this is going.

heavy siren
#

@inner spade @haughty quiver Oh! My! Gawd! If anybody can do it, John Parks Workshop is the place. Can you beleive it. And here I was just trying to be a bit jockular. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

haughty quiver
#

Jocularity is a great source of inspiration!

inner spade
#

@heavy siren You should share more of your "crazy" ideas. I'm looking for a project...

#

... but none of mine are potentially explosive.

heavy siren
#

@inner spade Ok, howz' bout a matter transmitter?

inner spade
#

@heavy siren ... on it.

heavy siren
#

LOL

inner spade
#

Actually, it's pretty close to my current brainstorm. Details and film at 11:00.

#

Have to test some new sensors and a new waveform generator chip that arrived yesterday.

#

Part of it was inspired by a recent @haughty quiver episode.

haughty quiver
#

Ooh!

heavy siren
#

Don't leave us hanging....

inner spade
#

Going to "breadboardize" an AD9833 SOIC-10 chip this morning to start.

#

I need to design a special sensor that involves string, a ping-pong ball, and some Hall-effect senors.

#

So I'm not quite ready to talk about the details until the sensor proves out.

heavy siren
#

Analog Devices eh? With SPI. Nice looking chip.

inner spade
#

The last one using the ping-pong ball and a flex sensor worked okay, though.

heavy siren
#

Very low power too.

inner spade
#

It's not the arbitrary waveform generator that I will eventually use, but it'll be perfect for prototyping.

heavy siren
#

Arbitrary or Noise generator?

#

Pink noise that is.

inner spade
#

Not exactly -- need to be able to create sounds from samples and/or algorithms on the fly.

#

I'll be able to talk about it more when I confirm the fundamental concepts -- not too certain that it will work just yet.

#

Still in the Sparky stage (but without involving explosive liquids)

river peak
#

@inner spade But what's the fun without explosive liquids?

Also, yes. I need to learn Eagle too

fickle umbra

that was the joybonnet print, right?

Nice stuffers in the AdaBox.

void widget

I had to put small rubber feet on upper corners of the case to keep the joy bonnet from stressing the GPIO header

heavy siren
#

+Hammerheaders, very nice

ocean musk
#

@void widget I printed a small ninjaflex square to put under mine

heavy siren

typical Adafruit, always supplying headers.

fickle umbra

That JoyBonnet is LOVE lemmie tell ya

but I agree some rubber feet should be included or something to wedge under.

+Pi zero game controller

+8Gig SD card., WOW

void widget
#

I had a heck of a time getting my office PC to work with that sdcard. Had to wipe all the card partitions and make a new one

heavy siren

+HDMI connector, geez, cables galore

#

+Power adapter, of course.

fickle umbra
#

Those USB readers are the same kind that the company I work for used to ship with some of our products for recovery media, they're actually really pretty darned good

ocean musk
#

@void widget thats because of annoying windows 10 update, now it shows all partitions. I use a sd card formatter program, need to run it twice before imaging cards now

rapid hornet

I'm in HQ!

thorn adder
#

yeah, I use SDFormatter in W10

ocean musk

@void widget i use SDFormatter also

@rapid hornet nice!

I used the hammer headers, my son put it together

heavy siren
#

I've never seen these things. That's incredible. But I still like to solder.

void widget
#

you can also solder the hammer headers ๐Ÿ˜‰

river peak

I want to make a tool for the Hammer Headers. I'd call it the shark.

lethal lagoon

I like hammers almost as much as soldering irons, hard to choose between banging on things and melting stuff ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

thorn adder

the guys that make them in the UK have a funny video showing the hammer headers

river peak

@lethal lagoon You can hammer the hammer headers in and then solder them on. You can do both!

ocean musk

mho's resistance isnt iso11 compatible

open girder

thorn adder

@open girder did you happen to see my post in the adabox forum. I was wondering if you had any ides about the controller problem I had

and maybe for nintendo switch

ocean musk

@open girder yay!

open girder
#

@thorn adder team will check it out, thank you!

thorn adder
#

thanks! or if there are any Pi or Retro Pie experts in here, I posted a problem I am having in the adafruit adabox forum

ocean musk
#

@thorn adder windows 10 shows all partitions now, you need to use a sd formatter and format the card, typically needs be done twice. then use etcher

thorn adder
#

oh no. I got all that done. I can't get the controller to work

#

I have another retro pi setup on a 3

ocean musk
#

oh, thees another person with format issue in forum

heavy siren

thorn adder

so I don't think it is a hardware issue because I took the card and plugged it into the 3 and my external controller wouldn't work. I am going to try plug the bonnet direclty into the 3 with this card
