But also every time I bring up "the body looks too much like the head" on any mon I get told I'm wrong so like

To those who've entered By the Books, I've done something small that will help me out later if y'all also help me out

If for your entry, you have polished up a frame of an animation - could you please place that frame in the new "Frame I used" folder?
This isn't required, but it would help me a lot when it comes time to make the sheet - for the naming scheme, let's just say Frame # from [your name].png

Also, a small disclaimer

After the deadline of By the Books ends, I plan on immediately starting Swoobat, since that contest will be a longer deadline

As someone who doesn't do crazy shading, and prefers things a little less rendered, I don't mind people who do out of style shading winning and keeping full points.

I think there should be more contests with fun restrictions that would require as close to GameFreak shading as possible thrown in with the ones that support everything though. (Although with how badly this one started I don't know if that'll ever happen again )

Rules:

• make a sprite that looks like it fits in a gen 5 game
• you have every gen 5 sprite, and #spriting-guidelines, to use as a reference
• if you are still unsure ask your fellow spriters
  -- do not ask Gordo
• your score will be based on gen 5 accuracy

And don't define it more than that. The issue was setting up the style as a series of rules that could be broken by accident

Maybe a rule could also be

• no more than 15 colours
  if people making extra colours is a subtle concern for the style guide, and why we have the rule about exactly head colours only in this one

That would be nice, rule of strict head colours runs into issues when a colour is missing (something not having either a main or shadow colour because it's a small pattern) because it was made to only work on that specyfic sprite and not with expectation of being used on any other shape

Or lack of ability to add aa or highlight to match the body texture (or highlight being too dull for the texture like most highlights are for ditto goo)

I mainly work with ditto bodies so I know the pain from my normal sprites

I'm always so happy when the head mon has aa for shadow

If I remember the sprites correctly another good examples of added aa being needed to match the texture is using a head mon that doesn't have aa between 2 colours/patterns on a dragonair or furret body, dragonair has aaed belly pattern and furret has aaed stripes so on a lot of head mons you either need to add a shade or yeet the aa making the pattern and with that the texture less smooth

Ok so my idea is already kinda done but only as an event for Team Glow-Up, not as an actual recurring event I dont think? Hard to tell

My idea was a recurring event (hosted in mini spriter events as youve said) where people can take their old sprites or sprites they just dont like anymore and remake them.
I could change it up though to be a bit more unique; maybe it's like concept craze where people have a week to submit any sprites they want to have remade, and then a week for different people to take those sprites and remake them as a collab? idk

Ooh actually I just thought of something:
Basically, people can submit "prompts" which are moreso descriptions of something they'd like to see sprited. They can describe how they'd like it to look, poses, colours, accessories, themes etc. But they don't say or choose what the fusion is.
After that phase, spriters can come in and choose one of these descriptions to make a sprite based on it. I guess like sprite requests but and event and without a set fusion, just a description and the spriter can choose what Pokemon would be best for it

I don't think there's a list but there may be a way to see if you can get an export of ALL of the current fusions that DO have sprites, and include their typing. Then you can manipulate that data (Excel spreadsheets UGH) and see

contest with an overall pokemon type theme thats just for sprites already started that have sat in drafts for way too long, just to inspire/motivate spriters that have unfinished sprites to actually finish them

bc i know 90% of the time i start a sprite for a contest but life is so busy and im such a perfectionist that the deadline always ends up being two weeks before I actually get around to having free time

so then im like "well the contest is already over i guess i did this for no reason" and then it sits in a folder for three months bc i can't find another contest and also past stuff isn't valid for contests so it's like. Idk I just end up feeling like contests are only for A- speed spriters with skill B- people with extra free time C- people who aren't neurodivergent/disabled that have enough energy/motivation/lack of chronic pain and fatigue that can do stuff in a reasonable amount of time

I wanted to enter the splice sisters to the contest but everything that happened in the beginning with the rule confusion just made me keel over and die

I already felt very iffy on contests beforehand though, I just don't like competing, not because I think I'd place bad but because I'd feel bad if I was placed above another spriter for any reason, so inherently my mindset goes against what contests are for

I like collaborating with my fellow spriters and joining in on a fun theme or bit

I don't want to be against them, it just feels bad

(That is a very personal me thing, there isn't anything wrong with the contests)

(And ironically, I am participating in the swoobat one but I'm just there to have fun with Cali and make as cute and fun of a whale as I can)

Notes for judging By the Books

The most important things in this contest by far is the smaller changes, and how well they add up to make the composition better.

Larger changes to sprites, and therefore the GF/Smogon base can still be good, but they should compliment the sprite, not be the main focus - nor be able to be seen as 'needless' or 'just eye candy'
In a similar boat falls VFX, does it compliment the concept, or does it look messy in contrast?

If you feel like something has been too heavily changed within the base, include that within your thoughts for your judging - and comment on it.

For spriters who chose to polish up a frame of an animation, you will notice the reference image is the frame they use and quite...messy. It is up to you to judge how well of a polish-job they did, and how strongly a factor that is in your score, but obviously should be the focus of your score. It is just one piece of the puzzle ontop of the already existent Scoring Guidelines

Despite this being a heavy splice contest, there is still such a thing as too simple - there should still be some changes to the fusion to make it stand out / unique - while still being recognizable as the GF/Smogon pose

Some Pokemon for this contest are kind of traps persay, in that they have awful & limiting palettes
