I did not know there was a no SFX rule, but that makes a lot of sense. I'd feel otherwise it would be a clusterf of SFX, because oh boy do people love their particles and whatnot.

I think the rule was because the Deoxys contest proved that special effects are being too overused and became a required feature win a contest even though the original pokemon sprites don't use that many effects at all unless they are an actual aspect of the Pokémon's design

Especially when the contest are made to incentive people to make sprites for the game, so that would be ironic if the contest makes people to make sprites that doesn't fit in the general style

About the Eevee/Umbreon... I may agree that it's quite revealing that the winner has been the one that comes closest to break the norm between the finalists, since precisely those effects of the tail look like an attempt has been made to break the norm by adding the effects on top of the fur instead of being in the background, but even so, it is still as if someone draw a Cosmog I think. After all, it's impossible to ban everything because if not we could only do sprite chimeras between the two Pokémon to participate

personally the stars on the fur are fine imo, umbreon is a ‘moon/star’ pokemon but in the same breath i think alot of things that were deemed special effects were also fine

In short, I wouldn't take contests too seriously because honestly sometimes (and most times) prefer fusions that didn't pass semis because they look more accurate as fusions and as Pokémon sprites than the finalists that sometimes are mostly made to win (not a backlash against any sprite in particular, I think this contest was a high quality one)

Very flattered that people liked my sprite that much, but I’d also like to point out how awesome all of the other entries are—not just the winners either, but all of them. I’m particularly impressed with Vigorath/Slaking and Ivysaur/Venusaur but there’s sooooo many others too!!!
I’ve also seen people talking about whether my sprite should have counted for the contest or not since it could be considered to have SFX and frankly I don’t feel like it’s my place to weigh in on that other than saying that I’m just happy people liked my sprite and whether or not it’s counted as the winner doesn’t really matter to me. If contest managers decide to take it out and recount or something, then I’m not gonna make a fuss.

Honestly, I’m very surprised too. I was expecting Ivysaur/Venusaur to win based off of sheer adorableness, the level of detail, and how custom it was. Out of my own two, I didn’t really see a clear winner though, both were custom and both appealed to very different aesthetics.

Some people use it to score very well in the first contest

More people catch on and it becomes obvious in the second

The factor of being fusions of Pokémon that are stablished and have popular favourites and forgotten ones makes things unbalanced to begin with. What make you choose between the popular one and the unpopular one is your trust of your fusion idea

Not saying Gardevoir fusions cannot be clever too, but of course you won't force a Stunfisk fusion in a contest without a good idea in mind

I think this was quite situational for this contest in particular because I don't see this happening anymore in other kind of contests. In this case the choices were highly limited and Pokémon that change just a few were a clear for most spriters if they wanted to win

So obviously things that could change a lot between members of the line were overused here

I was about to do Trapinch/Flygon too and knowing this to happen I didn't do it

Heck, I even asked Jam if I could use one of their ideas on their Salamence/Bagon on my own sprite. So having multiple of the same sprites being submitted actually may have helped others improve their spritework 👍

Yeah, I prefer to think about contests as a way to decide what Pokémon should I sprite for me. I won't change my way to sprite to gain more votes, but I always be happy if I see my sprite getting far
