my favorite from the early routes is nidoran male, but its your playthrough do whatever you like, one thing i can tell you i if you do one of the first to trades in viridian or in pewter pokemon center then theres going to be someone ofering another starter once you reach cerulean

If you think that looks cool then you're more than welcome to go with it. The ones I always suggest are pokemon like Abra or Gastly as you can get them at reasonable points in the playthrough and they compliment Charizard's stats and type well when they're all evolved. It's up to you though ultimately
