Hey @gilded quarry! Are you having trouble with the Pokéradar? You get it from the scientist in Cerulean City's Pokécenter. She gives you the Exp share as a quest reward there, and then will go to Route 24, where she will give you the radar.
When using it, make sure you have a repel active, or else you may only get regular encounters.

I'm always going to 3-4 aways and resetting until I get a 3 away at least and legitimately haven't been able to even get past a 5-chain, it breaks so often.

Is my lead too low level? Too high?

Does it being near a wall or edge affect the chances of actually getting INTO the encounter too? I know normally it would just be less likely to generate the next patches. Is it because I'm going too far away towards the edge of the grass, is that part of the calc for triggering the encounter when you step on a shaking patch?

Cause this seems way off, once again I just walked to a patch 4 tiles away only on a 2-chain and didn't get an encounter.
