But I've bought a new laptop and anything SteelSeries now automatically installs the pretty useless GG software which has broken the 7.1 surround sound from working.

TBH I am a bit tiny so R5 is slightly bigger for my proportions π
It feels better though cause the corsair was a mouse w/o an "ass" and this one is once again a regular mouse π
- I love the RGB ( a bit bright but I guess it should be a windows glitch with so many programms running xD )
- feels very good in hand and got used to it in a week or less
- clicking sound is not annoying, scoll-click is almost silent and very soft
- wanna see if those dustproof switches can be trusted after I use it on exterior places and other events.

@opaque isle the good thing when sb owns a HiFi-sound quality dac is that it can route 40KHz audio source to other speakers/headsets as well via its speaker output.
Many audiophiles have speakers that can respond to 40KHz.
IMO that gamedac with the PRO version can be very useful to listen to high quality audio from speakers and other headphones (capable of it) and not stick only to music/gaming with arctis pro.

It happens the first time you uninstall and reinstall different versions of the SS Engine.

If you're having problems with macros maybe it's the case to ask support and in case raise a ticket. I had some software issues with the Stratus Duo when it came out and some issues with my Arctis 9X on Xbox Series X at launch. In both cases a precise feedback helped pushing a bug fix.
Specially on the Stratus Duo, I guess I was the only one using it on the Steam Link π

I used to macro half of my keyboard...now I just do in-game macros when I need them and I learned basically almost every shortcut in Windows and macOS because of how inconsistent these software are...
I also don't like how much resources they pull. SS Engine is one of the cleanest out there, but Razer i. e. used to make Overwatch crash if you didn't turn off specific stuff...
after 7 years with a mouse, a keyboard and a specific headset I wanted to try something different, but I ended up coming back to Steelseries. I hope they do not start cracking software like some other companies do.
I remember that the passage from the OG Engine to Engine 2 was similarly problematic...I hope they will issue fixes to the problems GG has ASAP

What don't you like about it? It seems pretty straight forward and easy to use to me. Imo, Synapse is also fine. I haven't really observed how much impact on resources they have though. "Meh" ones would be Roccat Swarm for me (but it has some nice features like battery indicator in taskbar, you dont need it on all the time like SS to use macros, etc.), SS Engine is generally fine for me as well, just wish I could use macros and turn it off. iCue I dont really like at all. Havent used many other ones

The UI has this "old software look" with a fake sense of depth. From just a pure feeling point of view is way worse than the old Logitech software.
The other thing that I don't like it's inconsistency, one update could make you lose all of your profiles and it's not a thing you can control...it just happens randomically.
Roccat let's you save macros on the device because Roccat uses on board memory on almost everything. The reason why you need Engine running for macros is because the specific devices you use don't let you store macros. The Apex pro can save macros on board, so that one doesn't need the Engine/GG software to let you use macros.
Razer Synapse is just bad, interferes with games and breaks on its own randomically.
It also uses 13% of CPU on my laptop...I wanted to give another shot to Razer, their software literally removed the idea from my mind forever.

The front button is a bit too far up front, have to reach for it and break grip. The paddle is ok, but not really that practical imo. If you push it up it can kind of lift the mouse as well on the side. The normal side buttons feel fine to me. The cable is not good

I've always used some QcK mousepads...in the last 2 years I've used a lot a QCK+ limited edition of CS: GO, I think it's called OWL edition...that mousepad has a tighter fabric and it's faster to use.

The DeathAdder is huge though...this is more like a GPro Wireless for right-handed guys
it's compact but with a defined ergonomy
it's definitively smaller than my Rival 650, which wasn't Ideal for me in the end.

Steelseries don't offer yellows in the apex line so I cant say if it will be quieter. Sound depends on the plate material and board acoustics among other things, so will vary between boards. Reds will be the same as the omnipoints.

If you want a quiet keyboard buy a GMMK, Gateron Ink Black switches, some lubricant and make it silent on your own. The Apex Keyboard has an open design with a full aluminum top/body so when you hit the bottom it gets pretty loud!
