They don't need constant babysitting, they're somewhat automated

#

Knowing the lengths they go to keep the grid at 60Hz I'm not sure how well it'd work if everyone stopped using power though

#

I suspect a lot of plants would automatically shut down and/or be disconnected from the network then the first time you turn a toaster on you overload the grid in 3 states and trigger an emergency disconnect of your city too ๐Ÿ˜„

spring mango
#

does minecraft not support fulscreen on a 4k TV? Everytime i launch mc on using my tv as an external screen it crashes immediately

vernal moth
#

It does work just fine at any resolution

magic river
#

I would think maybe you're hitting a texture size limit in your GPU but unless you're using some absurd texture pack if your GPU can drive a 4K display it should be able to handle whatever Minecraft might be trying to do

lilac moon
#

I play it on a 4k display

magic river
#

Me too

vernal moth
#

Full screen in general is wonky tho

lilac moon
#

Unfortunately I had to sacrifice my second monitor because xorg doesn't like having multiple displays with different dpis and my other monitor is 1080p

vernal moth
#

Just use windowed

lilac moon
#

I will try Wayland someday

#

Some later day I will give up and use windows

magic river
#

I have had modpacks fail due to texture size limits due to them trying to generate some massive texture atlas due to a combination of how many blocks they add, my texture pack, and mipmapping

magic river
#

MC is supposed to detect this and generate multiple atlases for this case but I think they broke that too

golden gust
#

I think that theres some automated means for bringing generation on but that's more like, stuff which is machinery in general

#

e.g. pumped hydro

magic river
#

If you live near something renewable or nuclear I think it'd be most likely to keep working if everyone died

golden gust
#

issue is the transmission networks, tbqh

magic river
#

Not because the others will run out of fuel but because they can be easily tuned up/down or turned off when demand is low so that's what the automated systems would do to them

golden gust
#

Like, many of them will try to auto recover for some stuff

magic river
#

Nuclear they have to build a means to just dump power into the ground iirc

golden gust
#

local grids ofc are the safer bet

#

But, I mean, even there it gets to be a nightmare

#

e.g. theres many means that a reactor can trip out

#

earthquake, something falling out of spec, etc

#

I don't think nuclear is exactly walk away safe yet either, at least not existing deployments, that's more next gen and NIMBY! ๐Ÿ˜„

magic river
#

Oh yeah, nuclear probably wouldn't run long without people managing it or the rest of the infrastructure like water working

#

Hydro would also need a means to just dump power or automatically ease the generators on and off and would probably keep running for years

#

Not a lot of years but still

spring mango
magic river
#

optifine is probably doing something dumb ๐Ÿ˜„

#

What does the log say?

#

`A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:

golden gust
#

that's a memory access error

magic river
#

Probably a driver doing a dumb

lilac moon
#

I would say test if the same thing happens on vanila

spring mango
#

is it a ram issue or driver issue?

golden gust
#

the opengl library hit a memory access exception

#

as for why, I can'ttell you

magic river
#

I don't think LWJGL makes it easy to just violate memory safety

#

That's the Java API wrapper around GLFW, GL, OpenAL, etc

golden gust
#

Well, yea, it was the glfw dll

spring mango
#

it worked fine until i pressed f11 to change to fullscreen mode and boom, crashed

magic river
#

GLFW is a layer above GL, it's a library for handling windowing, input, and GL context creation

#

Probably a driver bug

#

Memory corruption can make it hard to trust a stacktrace

golden gust
#

Yea, I mean, drivers is generally where I'd see most stuff like that these days

magic river
#

Although 1.16 still used an ancient LWJGL, right?

golden gust
#

use whatever driver uninstaller is recommended for your GPU OEM and install a fresh copy of the drivers

Mesa is widely regarded as the least buggy GL library and when bugs do happen they're usually fixed pretty quickly if you're a developer and can tell them how you broke it

#

Remember when Epic demoed voxel-based global illumination for the PS4 in UE4 like 9 months before the PS4 came out then it turns out the demo was on a PC and the PS4 was like half the speed needed to run it?

golden gust
#

lol

#

Never heard that one ๐Ÿ˜„

#

I remember some of the ryzen reviews where some people where basically saying that the chip wasn't all that amazing

spring mango
#

mine has ryzen 5 5650U

golden gust
#

Turned out that basically the entire thing was held back because they couldn't get their hands on the higher speed DDR sticks at the time, etc

magic river
#

Ah, I guess I never heard the end of that story

vernal moth
#

I have been seeing crazy demos of the new two GI modes in godot, they got a new voxel which looks nice already, but the sdfgi is amazing

#

And was paid for by epic ^^

spring mango
#

its mainly the efficiency of the chip compared to intel like heat and wattage, not necessarily the raw performance.

golden gust
#

the performance was a key factor, especially in regards to cost

magic river
#

Apparently Epic was demoing Voxel Cone Tracing, that ended up not working on the PS4, then a dev studio I've never heard of invented Cascaded Voxel Cone Tracing and that could work

#

They used it on a PS4 game called The Tomorrow Children

#

Also never heard of that

golden gust
#

intel for as long as I can remember in terms of my own "keeping up with the trends", which was admitedly somewhat loosely, always kinda dickstomped AMD

#

but, AMD always had good price per watt/performance ratings, especially vs intel

spring mango
#

i was mainly referring to zen3 mobile cpus compared to tigerlake

golden gust
#

But, I know several people who had FX chips who magically lowered their heating bills

magic river
#

zen3 only really wins if you lock the power usage down below 45W

#

Or was it 35W?

spring mango
#

15W

magic river
#

If you let Alder Lake and Zen3 CPUs both run wild they end up using about the same amount of power but the Alder Lake smashes the Zen3 in perf

#

It's only when you lock them way down so they're always throttled that Zen3 wins

#

In laptops, no idea on desktop

golden gust
#

It's been fun, however

spring mango
#

im waiting for the u series alderlake, that's the real test

golden gust
#

Like, I remember many benchmarks which showed AMD kinda rocked in regards to single core performance

#

but, as soon as you got into threading, things like their memory controller held them back

magic river
#

A Zen3 SoC might have a TDP of 15W but in reality it'll use basically however much you allow it before it hits thermal limits

golden gust
#

which, iirc was one of the biggest improvements in the "AMD revival" is that they basically replaced their controller

golden gust
#

pre ryzen or zen, idk

#

and, for a part, still ryzen

magic river
#

Zen 1 had a shit memory controller

#

Zen+ mostly fixed it iirc, Zen 2 definitely did

spring mango
#

lets be honest. anything below zen+ is bad

golden gust
#

iirc, ram speed matters MUCH more on AMD chips than it does intel ones

magic river
#

Yeah, I think that's still true

#

But it's not as wide of a swing as it was with Zen 1

#

Zen 1 went from trash to amazing depending on RAM speed and timings

#

Zen+ and on go from good to amazing

spring mango
#

my laptop has lpddr4 4266, dunno how it is compared so ddr4 3200

#

i heard there is more latency due to a cut of bandwith available in lpddr4

magic river
#

Oh, The Tomorrow Children was a relatively simple game, geometrically

#

The scenes are usually pretty simple and either you can't see very far or there isn't much to see

#

That's how they pulled off doing all their lighting purely with GI

#

Ah, but they don't even do that, only really close stuff uses GI, the rest uses baked light maps

#

Err, not baked, they were at some point rendered using this technique, just not updated every frame

worn crest
#

Snapshot day ๐Ÿ˜‹

vernal moth
#

About godots new 3d GI stuff

#

For something that once was only usable for 2d at all, having such a nice 3d renderer which such powerful tools, where the dev needs to do basically nothing and it just works, even on giant regions, is amazing

#

And it runs even on low end hardware

lavish compass
#

considering it's like one of the actually FOSS game engines

vernal moth
#

yep

#

it will replace unity eventually

#

and then we got one high end engine (unreal) and one for the indies (godot) and the world will be a happy place

vernal moth
#

firefox, facebook, etc all provide funding

#

#

I think juan + 4 others work full time on it?

magic river
#

Microsoft and Mozilla were also one-off grants

#

$20,000 from Mozilla and $24,000 from Microsoft

#

Microsoft's funding was for adding C# and then Epic's was to improve GDScript so you don't have to use C# ๐Ÿ˜„

vernal moth
#

mozilla was for web export, facebook funds the XR stuff for two years now I think?

magic river
#

Mozilla's was for WebAssembly, WebSockets, and WebGL support

#

So yeah, I guess "web export" would probably cover that

am going insane here. am helping a coworker who managed our contractors. they were tasked with "hey, look at those two apps, now build similar apps for those 2 products", something that would take me, idk, 2 weeks. they took way longer of course, but delivered something, even works in our dev after some small changes. now we want to release it, so we moving to staging, suddenly nothing works.
turns out, they hardcoded a parameter called "ClientURL" which is used to find out where the app is embedded, to configure different rabats and settings. when confronted they said "this parameter seems mandatory, so we hardcoded it. now we have a problem, I see two solutions, 1) you make the param no longer mandatory, or 2) you make the service accept some global value (not nice)"

I cant even

#

oh god I see now

#

If I understand correctly, would this mean merging overworld, nether and end into one folder?

unkempt drift
#

yeah, it goes back to the vanilla world format (but adding level.dat for each world)

#

there's only 1 level.dat in vanilla. even with custom dimensions and everything

neon bramble
#

TIL that notchian server doesn't separate these too

#

what the hell were bukkit developers thinking?

unkempt drift
#

well craftbukkit added multiworld support before mojang did

neon bramble
#

did they?

unkempt drift
#

yeah

#

notch supposedly said "its impossible to add multiworld support" but they did it anyways

neon bramble
#

"its impossible to add multiworld support" - ngl, that sounds like "we are too lazy to add multiworld support"

unkempt drift
#

and that whole folder structure will be duplicated for each custom dimension

neon bramble
#

I mean, not like you are going to have many dimensions for a single world

#

But I can see the issue

unkempt drift
#

well those are all separate worlds

#

craftbukkit removes that distinction

#

where as vanilla has 1 world with 3 dimensions, craftbukkit says those are 3 worlds

neon bramble
#

oh I see, so they just duplicated the world for each dimension, in order for multiworlds to function?

unkempt drift
#

im not sure exactly what the original change was, I wasn't around back then. but that something like that

neon bramble
#

"craftbukkit says those are 3 worlds" doesn't this slow down loading/generating worlds a lot?

unkempt drift
#

I mean each dimension still has to load and generate in vanilla

#

and in vanilla, each dimension has its own region folder with the .mca files in it, and what not

#

BUT they all shared a level.dat file.

#

and tbh, a lot of the settings in level.dat can be per-world/dimension

So your choices are GNOME or KDE

lavish compass

naaaah bro dwm

magic river
#

Well, or Cinnamon

tropic flame
neon bramble
#

Especially on Nvidia

magic river
#

"most DEs"

tropic flame
#

can't go more lightweight than LXQt unless you want to sacrifice functionality

magic river
#

There are two DEs, basically ๐Ÿ˜›

void void
neon bramble
#

There are way more

lavish compass
neon bramble
magic river
#

MATE is old GNOME, Cinnamon is tweaked GNOME, Elementary is tweaked GNOME, there is KDE, and the rest are either dead or some cobbled together thing that I don't really think counts

neon bramble
#

I use KDE so I don't really care

magic river
#

XFCE is basically dead

neon bramble
#

But KDE is really broken with wayland, especially on nvidia

void void
tropic flame
# neon bramble Is it?

I mean, supposedly LXDE would still be continued but a huge part of the devs moved onto LXQt because GTK 2 lost support and GTK 3+ sucks for making a lightweight DE according to them

#

so they switched to using Qt

lavish compass
#

qubes os still uses xfce

neon bramble
void void
#

ok why is nvidia the bitch of linux????? I don't understand why nvidia is acting dogshit

magic river
#

Last time I looked at LXQt it was just a bunch of random projects someone was trying to mash into a "DE" but in my view a DE should be something created by the same team and use the same coding and UI standards, configuration systems, etc

neon bramble
tropic flame
#

I'd say it's pretty fine out of the box

void void
neon bramble
#

it was completely broken

#

it seemed to work only when I was actively moving mouse

#

and it took more than half a minute to load

vernal moth
neon bramble
magic river
#

For a lot of these alternatives they're only "lightweight" because they're old as fuck

tropic flame
neon bramble
#

Great example: AMD drivers

void void
vestal jasper
#

If installing Nvidia drivers on Linux wasn't such a fucking pain in the ass I'm sure more people would do so

lavish compass
magic river
#

The community doesn't do a ton of AMD driver work

#

Like 90% of it is done by AMD

#

The other 10% is people Valve pays to do it

neon bramble
lavish compass
#

I would guess that is because it works well enough

neon bramble
magic river
#

Well, okay, that's a bit much, RedHat is in there too

lavish compass
#

I can guarantee that if Nvidias driver become open source, people will start contributing

magic river
#

They can't open source their current driver

void void
magic river
#

You're asking them to make a new driver from scratch in Mesa

wet storm
#

So I use CentOS stream and AMD graphic card

lavish compass
magic river
#

Current driver is a mess, guaranteed

neon bramble
# lavish compass Manjaro ๐Ÿคฎ

I see a lot of people shitting on Manjaro, but these are the only points I've seen brought up:

  • Pamac is shit (I don't use it)
  • They SSL certificate expired twice (idc tbh)
  • Delaying packages breaks stuff (I have unstable mirror, synced 2-3 times per day, no delay for me)
tropic flame
magic river
#

And bits of it come from others

tropic flame
#

just have the rights to use

magic river
#

And bits of it are copied out of video games so when they see that game they can inject their modified version in to make the game work

lavish compass
neon bramble
#

I just feel bad for nouveau drivers devs

tropic flame
#

it should be on the videogame devs to code according to whatever graphics API they chose

magic river
#

Gamedevs, in general, don't know how to program a GPU

lavish compass
#

they tried to make rolling release versioned somehow

magic river
#

They do the dumbest shit

neon bramble
#

I've had only issue once, which was caused by AUR package depending on a thing that was hold back by manjaro (you know, the week period).
So I switched to unstable, solved all isues.

void void
#

ok im installing lxqt let's see what will happen

lavish compass
#

from my experience using both, Manjaro has been a pain installing packages

magic river
#

They either do outright broken things or they do very inefficient things

wet storm
magic river
#

Then the drivers patch them up

#

Look at Elden Ring

lavish compass
void void
#

@tropic flame now what? I shall log out from gnome and im in lxqt??

magic river
#

lavish compass

tropic flame
lavish compass
#

I like how proton actually made elden ring playable

neon bramble
#

And the fact that it just works

#

is great

magic river

The "driver", in this case DXVK, added a cache so when the game frees one of them the driver holds on to it then just gives the game that one back next frame

neon bramble
#

yeah, it has pretty specific playerbase

worn ember
#

i also played satisfactory, also wasn't that great hah

neon bramble
#

I tried satisfactory but it wasn't nearly as great as Factorio

#

Especially, the optimization sucked when compared to factorio

worn ember
#

well yeah

3D vs 2D

neon bramble

neon bramble
#

the thing I hate about satisfactory is the lack of bird view

#

This seems to solve it very well

worn ember
#

it's been 17 years and GNOME's file picker doesn't have thumbnail view (Windows XP had it, for comparison) - https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/issues/233
blurry text? it's not a bug, it's a change in the rendering. who made you think sharpness is a metric? - https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/issues/3787
inactive process idling on 1GB+ ram in the background? just kill it if you don't like it lol - https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-software/-/issues/942
why would you want a volume slider... in a music player app?? are you crazy?! - https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-music/-/issues/343
want to search for files with spaces? you can't, sorry - https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/issues/616

#

my usual GNOME slander summed up

neon bramble
#

like for real

#

imagine using gnome

tropic flame
#

these are issues that have been open for years btw it's not like I'm bashing on month old reports

#

especially the first one... 17 years

magic river

I don't think GNOME Music is actually a part of the GNOME desktop, they have a bunch of addon things like that

void void
#

now i have a bunch of packages :/

#

can i get rid of most gnome shit

magic river
#

Their argument against a volume slider there appears to be that the GNOME UI should work like the Android one where you have volume sliders for "media", "notifications", etc

neon bramble
#

very naive

magic river
#

Thumbnails in file chooser is basically just no one has done the work, PRs welcome

#

The text isn't blurry if you use a hidpi display

neon bramble

i wish discord would let me lower the volume of screenshares while letting me have the call volume high, but instead it just shoves everything into Android's call channel and "fuck you"

#

want to lower volume? lower everything, you dum

#

sucks

magic river
#

The gnome-software thing seems like they didn't want to rely on systemd but also appears to just be waiting for someone to do the work

neon bramble
#

Just don't use gnome
