twin lagoon
#

the msi laptop below

#

it has a 3080

plucky sparrow
#

That’s a 3070 max

twin lagoon
#

they are not fucking around

vernal moth
#

Oh but it got beaten

magic river
#

That's not the 3070 Max

plucky sparrow
#

Oh nvm it’s 3080

#

Wrong laptop

#

My bad

magic river
#

It stomps the 3070 and slightly loses to the 3080 but uses 100W less power

plucky sparrow
#

This seems like a great win to me

#

Are we talking about an igpu

magic river
#

Well, it only beats the 3070 by about as much as the 3080 beats it but it does it using like 40W less power

plucky sparrow
#

Well is it an igpu

magic river
#

Yeah, it's an iGPU

plucky sparrow
#

Damn

#

An igpu beating a 3070 and almost the 3080

#

Crazy

vernal moth
#

I mean

#

It's not fair to compare it to an Intel igpu

#

It's closer to an amd Apu

#

It's a SoC after all

plucky sparrow
#

64gb vram?

#

What in the world

magic river
#

Intel iGPUs are also in an SoC...

#

And beat the current AMD APUs

warm anchor
#

Apple is going ham today

plucky sparrow
#

I can totally see this being used in Mac pros

magic river
#

I think I might spend too much money today

warm anchor
#

LOL

plucky sparrow
#

Will not go to waste

warm anchor
#

Let us know how it is amaranth

magic river
#

MagSafe

plucky sparrow
#

And they say Apple is bad

#

MacBook time!!!!!

magic river
#

It has a notch!

plucky sparrow
#

IT HAS?

magic river
#

14" and 16", notch, probably miniled too then

plucky sparrow
#

LOL

twin lagoon
#

FUCK

#

I'LL STICK TO MY DELL XPS

cosmic raft
#

?

plucky sparrow
#

I love the notch but I feel like it’ll make the menu bar thiccer

magic river
#

Seems like the leakers got all the external stuff right

#

Ports, notch, sizes, etc

cosmic raft
plucky sparrow
#

They brought back MagSafe

twin lagoon
#

IT HAS SUCH A BIG NOTCH

#

LOL

magic river
#

It has a magnetic charging port again

cosmic raft
#

WHAT does

#

lol

magic river
#

MBP

plucky sparrow
#

What’s the purpose of such a giant notch

#

If no Face ID

cosmic raft
#

why the fuck are they going backwards

magic river
#

Camera, light sensor, microphone

#

People really wanted the magsafe

cosmic raft
#

why though

magic river
#

No more touchbar, thank god

#

And sure enough, full black keyboard

plucky sparrow
#

Because MagSafe is great

cosmic raft
#

USB-C is better :p

plucky sparrow
#

There is still usb c

void void
twin lagoon
#

it's so fucking ugly

#

holy shit

magic river
#

HDMI, TB4, SD card on right, headphone, 2x TB4, magsafe on left

plucky sparrow
#

Is that HDMI full size?

magic river
#

It's not like they deleted a port to put magsafe in

#

And you can still charge from all the TB4 ports

plucky sparrow
#

Why is the new MacBook Pro so thick

#

And ugly

austere ivy
#

i don’t like usb-c’s mechanical port but please don’t tell me that apple’s switching to another port

twin lagoon
#

magsafe is back

austere ivy
#

anyone got a link to the stream?

twin lagoon
#

once again

plucky sparrow
#

They are!

twin lagoon
#

but that's not the worst thing

austere ivy
#

ty

austere ivy
plucky sparrow
#

The notch is ok I like it

void void
#

They still support thunderbolt charging

#

nice

plucky sparrow
#

But this new mbp is so damn thick

magic river
#

Good, thicker laptop should mean more battery and better cooling

#

Fuck slicing cake with your laptop 😛

plucky sparrow
#

THE MENU BAR IS THICKER AS WELL?

twin lagoon
plucky sparrow
#

that’s so ugly

twin lagoon
#

a dell xps 13 from 2020 has a smaller bezel

plucky sparrow
#

It’s the ugliest menu bar I’ve ever seen

twin lagoon
#

and a webcam

plucky sparrow
#

It looks cheap

#

It doesn’t even have Face ID

magic river
#

They're doing the weird resolutions

#

Guessing that's so fullscreen apps can be pushed below the notch and be standard 16:10

austere ivy
#

dang the verge is fast lmao

plucky sparrow
#

Promotion on macs

austere ivy
twin lagoon
#

what an emotional rollercoaster

plucky sparrow
#

Wait actually the menu bar looks great

magic river
#

ProMotion is either PSR, VRR, or both

plucky sparrow
#

I wish they made it full black tho

magic river
#

Nothing amazing just most laptop makers do a shit job of those

austere ivy
plucky sparrow
#

Small bezels

wispy blade
#

can yall maybe send screenshots next time thx

plucky sparrow
#

No

magic river
#

Notch has webcam, light sensor (I think it's a bit fancier than that?), and microphone

plucky sparrow
#

Watch the event

wispy blade
#

what if i can't

plucky sparrow
#

That’s a you problem

#

The notch is so thick

quasi valley
#

can we get michael but with a notch

wispy blade
#

just bonk him

#

ez

austere ivy
#

whoop dee doo a 1080p camera

twin lagoon
#

THEY HAVE THIS BIG OF A NOTCH AND THEY ONLY HAVE A 1080P CAMERA

magic river
#

laptop webcams are shit

void void
magic river
#

If it's even decent that's worth the size 😛

plucky sparrow
#

6 speakers

magic river
#

Thicker laptop should mean better sound too

plucky sparrow
#

The new MacBook pros remind me of what they used to look like ages ago

magic river
#

Yeah they more or less reset to 2015 and tweaked from there

plucky sparrow
#

It’s so rounded as well

magic river
#

Sure enough, 16" can have M1P or M1M

plucky sparrow
#

Damn

void void
#

holy shit it has ports

magic river
#

14" can have M1M too!

plucky sparrow
#

I’m starting to like the notch tbh

austere ivy
plucky sparrow
#

If only they made the text and the apple logo in the menu bar bigger

austere ivy
#

dang they’re ragging on intel lol

magic river
#

Fuck I'm going to spend too much money, I just got this laptop 18 months ago...

plucky sparrow
#

So it looks proportionate

#

Intel is probably crying right now

#

I love it how they laughed at apple

worn ember
plucky sparrow
#

Eh I doubt it will overheat

#

If anything it might get slightly hot when charging

#

That’s it

worn ember
#

well either they pass a shit load of current through it or the battery is tiny for it to charge that fast

plucky sparrow
#

The best MBP is probably gonna cost you a lung

plucky sparrow

Honestly I was expecting 64gb ram max?

mental meadow
#

I'm just laughing my ass off when reading it

magic river
#

I thought the M1M was 64GB max

#

M1P is 32GB

plucky sparrow
#

Yeah same

#

It has more vram than ram

magic river
#

It just has RAM

plucky sparrow
#

Oh you can get 64gb ram

magic river
#

There is no dedicated VRAM

plucky sparrow
magic river

I can't even get the page to load

plucky sparrow

warm anchor

people that preorder laptops are worse than people preordering games

cosmic raft
#

how so?

#

I preorder games sometimes :p

wispy blade
#

imagine it exploding like note 7

magic river
#

Oh I guess it is a preorder, Oct 26th

plucky sparrow
#

I can only wish

wispy blade
#

that's kinda hot ngl

magic river
#

Considering it usually takes about that long for an order of a customized laptop anyway that's not much of a preorder

worn ember
#

imagine not exploding twice a day

magic river
#

Well, other than not having reviews yet

plucky sparrow
#

I was expecting apple to go softer

#

Like M1X that’s it

#

Slight improvements

#

But damn

magic river
#

I think I'd stick with the M1P and 1TB SSD

#

So with 32GB of RAM that's $2,899 for me

#

I'm going to at least wait for reviews and such though 😛

worn ember
#

so i had to use a mac today and my wireless mouse wouldn't connect so i legit couldnt log in lmao

magic river
#

That's $1000 more than my XPS though

#

Which I got over a MBP because of the touch bar, butterfly keys, and because the MBP was $1000 more 😛

plucky sparrow
#

Hey

cosmic raft
#

I like the touch bar

plucky sparrow
#

We got new ports!

cosmic raft
#

it's useful

plucky sparrow
#

That’s the best thing

#

Touch Bar was cool tbh

magic river
#

I've kind of hated it since though. Like, I'm comfortable in Ubuntu and it works well enough but it doesn't work right and I can't fix it

plucky sparrow
#

Should’ve kept it

#

At least on the 14”

magic river
#

And Windows for development is just a nightmare of nope, fuck that

#

And also didn't really work right

twin lagoon
#

fucking hell apple

magic river
#

The main problem with both of them is fractional scaling, the screen is 1080p (well, 16:10 so 1200p) which is too small but 2x scaling would be 600p which is too big

cosmic raft
#

my favourite:

twin lagoon
#

dell xps 13 is perfect in terms of resolution

#

because it does not need scaling

#

100% is the perfect size

mental meadow
#

damn

#

that profit

worn ember
#

what the fuck

void void
magic river
#

X11 fractional scaling is a joke and mostly only a Qt thing, Wayland fractional scaling works just like macOS does (render at 2x, scale down to framebuffer) but XWayland doesn't and apparently can't support that so all X apps just look blurry

#

If you're ok with 1200p on a 13" screen with no scaling or font size changes you must have better than 20/20 vision

austere ivy
wispy blade
#

god, laptops just frustrate me

worn ember
#

they go for like half that price in retail

magic river
#

iirc with xrandr you can do the same thing wayland does if you jump through enough hoops but I think apps then don't have a way to know the actual screen resolution

#

So full screen stuff would still render at 2x then be downscaled

worn ember
plucky sparrow
#

I like to carry around my three screens as well

magic river
#

I want to say macOS scaling is actually more advanced than just rendering at 2x (or whatever whole integer is closest, rounding up) then scaling down, I'm pretty sure they said they capture standard text rendering calls and draw them in last properly scaled

#

But that might have just been them overselling the fact that everything other than images is still drawn by the OS so doesn't look blurry when you scale it up

twin lagoon
#

FUCK i just forgot now everyone will copy apple's notch in laptops

magic river
#

Oh yeah, my XPS doesn't have a notch, has a smaller top bezel, and has Face ID (well, Windows Hello)

plucky sparrow
#

Lol yes

#

I can’t wait for people to cry over the notch on a MacBook

magic river
#

I used the Hello thing like twice

#

I was going to set it up in Linux but the program for it is kind of a hackjob someone made that isn't in a distro or maintained by normal DE or plumbing folks so I was worried I was going to lock myself out of my laptop or have it unlock from random inputs

ancient bolt
#

yeah, and while the notch is funny, it really does provide more screen space since your top bar basically moves up into the bezel, so that's cool

#

the extra ports are cool and magsafe is cool too

#

it's like it's 10 years ago

shrewd portal
#

tbh i wish there were 4 ports

ancient bolt
#

I can go both ways

#

having the ports built in is nice

Okey, but, Den

ancient bolt
#

but then if people fully loaded up the thunderbolt ports they'd be mad that the HDMI port stopped working

golden gust
ancient bolt

personally, everything I have is thunderbolt or USB-C so the additional ports don't help me that much other than flexibility

ancient bolt
golden gust
#

I erm, have a problem

shrewd portal
#

yeah

#

idk

#

i don't really know if hdmi even makes sense these days

#

like, even in meeting rooms hdmi is not really used anymore

#

it's either DP or TB

#

which i guess are both DP but w/e

ancient bolt
#

they're all the same protocol

plucky sparrow
#

The notch is quite a smart design

ancient bolt
#

HDMI has the benefit of being able to deliver sound too

shrewd portal
#

can't DP do sound too though?

plucky sparrow
#

You’re getting an almost bezel-less screen for the price of a thicker menu bar

ancient bolt
#

not that I'm aware of, but maybe

shrewd portal
#

my monitors are DP and can transfer sound, not sure about the encapsulated-in-thunderbolt mode but i don't really think it should be different

ancient bolt
#

yeah the space that used to be pure bezel can now be used for status bar - and the screen is wide enough there's actually room to put stuff there

upbeat falconBOT
golden gust
#

I mean, hdmi is still used heavily in like, consumer land, especially given that you'd need special cables otherwise iirc

shrewd portal
#

yeah thats true

#

the other thing about the new 1m s is like

ancient bolt
#

HDMI is by far still the most common display port

shrewd portal
#

the memory bandwidth

#

holy SHIT

magic river
#

TB4 is already DP though

faint crystal
#

yea displayport is never included in the box

shrewd portal
#

400GB/s in a LAPTOP COMPONENT

magic river
#

Like, hook up a USB-C->DP pin adapter and call it a day

#

USB-C has a DP Alt-mode and TB4 requires that be implemented, iirc

#

In any case MBPs support it

#

Hell some monitors just take a USB-C input now since that's how laptops are giving you DP these days

shrewd portal
#

yeah I sort of want a Full Fat (TM) dp port sometimes though

#

im waiting for the m1 max mac mini though

#

i think im gonna get rid of my desktop

magic river
#

If you could only have one of them though HDMI is the obvious choice

#

That's going to be useful way more often than a normal DP

ancient bolt
#

seems like all you really get with the M1 Max over the M1 Pro is GPU, so for my uses at lest the M1 Pro is cheaper

magic river
#

So I've got a coworker trying to show a browser widget to allow an oauth login, he is trying to count the number of URLs the widget tries to load and/or hard code the exact URLs it's supposed to visit in order so he can tell if it worked

ancient bolt
magic river
#

I kept trying to explain to him that the oauth flow is a black box, we have no idea what URLs the provider is going to send us to

shrewd portal
#

I'm also kind of worried about the amount of power the CPU draws

#

like, on a 50W chip my intel mbp was a trashfire and sucked

magic river
#

I wonder if that's a typo, on the 14" one the left model has less CPU and GPU cores

#

Probably the ones that failed validation

#

I guess maybe on the 16" they have the same core counts but different clocks, would be a really terrible display if that's the case

mental meadow
magic river
#

They're trying to do that stupid thing they do on their phones where you don't know what the clocks are, it's just models

#

But it seems like the clocks might be important here 😛

ancient bolt
#

nope, the left is just the absolute bottom configuration

#

middle is the left with 1tb of storage

#

go into the left and select 1tb and the price is identical lol

magic river
#

huh

ancient bolt
#

will wait for reviews to see if M1 Pro and M1 Max really do have the same CPU and the only difference is GPU, or if the Max is clocked higher or something

#

but if they really are the same, baseline M1 Pro with 32g of memory would be all I want, and that's a little more reasonably priced

(also the Thinkpad X13 has 5G ;D)

proud lance
#

dont need it

#

anywhere I go has Wifi

limber knotBOT
#

it's notabout need, it's about a thing that you can't just remove from a Thinkpad. Mobile modems have existed for ages in Thinkpads now ;D

#

(and why would you get anything that isn't a Thinkpad?)

#

runs

#

I really wish I could justify buying a laptop lol

golden gust
#

I just don't think that mobile broadband on a laptop is that much of a need for most, especially when many already carry a device in their pocket in which unlimited data is potentially cheaper than getting an external mobile broadband plan

limber knotBOT
#

yeah but wifi tethering is against some contracts!

proud lance
#

yeah you can hotspot it

limber knotBOT
#

(as if anyone cares about that)

proud lance
#

forgot about that

golden gust
#

Yea, but cases where wifi tethering is banned, so is putting the sim card into a tablet

limber knotBOT
#

I mean nowdays I personally am not really anywhere that isn't at home so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

golden gust
#

Yea, I mean, that's part of it these days, tbqh

limber knotBOT
#

my laptop is an old T430 which works for watching streams in the garden

golden gust
#

how often are you away from somewhere which doesn't have public wifi in which you're gonna laze about?

limber knotBOT
#

and doing some light gaming/coding

golden gust
#

especially given that most screens these days are fucking horrible for being outside anyways

limber knotBOT
#

well... about that. Germany is really dumb about public wifi

#

it only got legalized a couple years ago so most venues still don't offer it

#

like half of our trains still don't have wifi lol

golden gust
#

at least over here idk anywhere I could go which isn't a park in which I would have access to public wifi if needed

limber knotBOT
#

don't get me wrong, it's not a problem in big cities like Berlin but I don't exactly live in the most progressive state 😅

wet smelt
#

I honestly barely use public wifi. Hotspotting from my phone is way more convenient. And unless you watch videos, you barely use any data. Have you considered one of those StreamOn flatrates? 👀

limber knotBOT
#

I have 200MB for free each month and that has been enough for years now lol

wet smelt
#

Netzclub?

limber knotBOT
#

yeah

void void
#

5g hotspots are insanely fast for mobile

limber knotBOT
#

(and yes, I'm aware about them being able to monetize my geolocation data)

#

there isn't much to monetize though lmao

wet smelt
#

Haha nice, I just ordered one of their sims for my second phone last Friday 😄

golden gust
#

dealer phone?

wet smelt
#

😳

#

🤫

limber knotBOT
#

who doesn't have two phones? one with stock android for shitty banking apps and one rooted/linux/whatever one to tinker with ;D

#

currently running SailfishOS and it has been pretty nice (besides there not being good solutions for shitty platforms like youtube)

void void
#

i got one phone for each app 🤔

golden gust
#

Yea, I mean, I got the joys of deciding what I wanna do for my phone in the next year or so

wet smelt
#

I keep spending LineageOS onto my mom and dads old phones and then put them in a drawer and never ever touch them again 😐

limber knotBOT
#

do the environment a favour and get a used one

#

runs

void void
#

i just got the oneplus 9 and its dope

golden gust
#

Like, I'm still in a headspin over switching to iPhone or stucking with android

void void
#

dont switch

#

not worth it

#

imo

magic river
#

US carriers are using VoLTE to lock us back down

wet smelt
#

Go iPhone if you wanna go full Apple. Macbook. AppleTV. Apple Music. Apple Watch. Apple Everything. Otherwise stick with Android tbh.

limber knotBOT
#

yeah... if I learned anything from trying to daily drive SailfishOS: don't switch the UI/UX and ecosystem lol

golden gust
#

I mean, this is my first phone which I bought new, outside of like an LG cookie and an E61 I got years ago for birthdays, etc

magic river
#

Verizon already doesn't allow you on their old 3G network iirc and only allows phones they sell to use VoLTE

limber knotBOT
#

muscle memory is a bitch when changing OS

golden gust
#

Like, at least for me, I don't use my phone for much bar YT, spotify and the odd bit of web browsing, so I'm kinda eering towards apple for the sake of just having a device which is supported for longer than 2 years

magic river
#

AT&T is turning off their 3G nework in February iirc and does the same shit with VoLTE

#

Although I think I was able to force enable it on my grandma's Xiaomi phone, we'll see

limber knotBOT
#

I mean, Samsung phones still get security updates e.g. my android one is an S8 which still works great

wet smelt
#

Fair enough. Apple got solid devices if you want it to "just work" and want a nice user experience.

golden gust
#

I kinda wanna avoid samsung for various reasons

void void
#

I switched from at&t because of the whole supporting OAN thing plus they were expensive for not the best service

#

got a oneplus9 for free

magic river
#

Samsung phones are... weird

golden gust
#

had a few samsungs in the past and they always ended up dying for stupid reasons

#

Like, my S4

#

The only way to get wifi on it at one point was to literally take off the back casing

magic river
#

They're like Amazon shit, its their own little corner of the world and everything works differently

limber knotBOT
#

I personally would advocate for Sony because they let you easily unlock shit and flash whatever you want ¯_(ツ)_/¯

magic river
#

If I was going to use a stock Samsung phone I'd probably rather get an iPhone

limber knotBOT
#

and they are the only ones commited to a sub 5 inch line of compact phones lol

#

at least the stock system on the s8 is pretty nice tbh ¯_(ツ)_/¯

golden gust
#

I have an OP 5T now and it's just, am at the point where I kinda wanna LOS it but I kinda can't be assed reinstalling everything and such

limber knotBOT
#

was actually a bit surprised because samsung used to be pretty shit

#

you can probably dirty flash 👀

golden gust
#

can't

#

Gotta unlock the bootloader which will wipe the device

limber knotBOT
#

oof

#

that's what I get for being used to sane companies I guess

magic river
#

Eh? That's a sane thing to do

limber knotBOT
#

did you check if there isn't a vulnerability that lets you unlock without the vendor way?

magic river
#

It's a security thing so people can't flash random shit to the device to try to access your data

limber knotBOT
#

the sane way would be to have the option if your phone is unlocked

magic river
#

If he unlocked it when he first got it this wouldn't be a problem 😛

limber knotBOT
#

also seeing as most people probably don't even encrypt the phone getting to the data isn't exactly difficult anyways lmao

#

(but I believe more and more models ship encrypted nowadays)

magic river
#

It's encrypted by default, that's a part of why it wipes it

#

I think that's actually the technical reason why it wipes it

limber knotBOT
#

well it wouldn't be too difficult to disable the encryption? thonk

golden gust
#

yea, android is basically encrypted by default these days afaik

magic river
#

Disabling the encryption requires wiping it 😛

limber knotBOT
#

I mean if you have the password just let the user do that lol

#

that's just stupid by design then though

magic river
#

It's the kind of encryption like business laptops have where even if there is no login requirement when you power the device on (why!!!) you still can't just take the drive and slap it in another device to read the data

limber knotBOT
#

if you can decrypt to use the device then there shouldn't be anything stopping you from decrypting it to flash a custom os

magic river
#

It might be possible to unlock the bootloader without wiping the enclave but that gets back to being a security problem

golden gust
#

issue is getting the access to do stuff like that without having the bootloader unlocked

#

pretty sure the reason I didn't unlock it cos I wanted to ensure that my banking shit would work

#

especially as natwest where kinda tiptoing on being assholes for it at one point

limber knotBOT
#

well that's my point: it shouldn't be an issue. vendors just want to inconvenience you so that you keep their os

#

imagine if they would do that on a PC... oh wait, Windows 11 is doing exactly that

magic river
#

Vendors want to stop the FBI from getting in to your phone without complicating the fastboot environment with PIN management

#

Actually I think Google might require it work this way...

limber knotBOT
#

well fuck them then lol

#

I guess that goes back to why I'm running SailfishOS thonk

#

although it's even less open source than some android roms -.-

magic river
#

Even if they don't fastboot needs to always work and this is a use case they don't really care about

#

Like, the user experience here doesn't matter, you're about to flash a half working OS to your phone so clearly you're okay with pain

limber knotBOT
#

it would be better working if they allowed the user more freedom though thinksmart

magic river
#

Err, no?

#

This part has nothing to do with how well the OS you flash to it works

#

Oh, I just remembered the name of the business laptop thing: BitLocker

limber knotBOT
#

bitlocker can be disabled extremely easy though, all you need is access to the microsoft account lol

magic river
#

It unlocks the drive before you get to a login page but the encryption key is stored in TPM

#

And not all versions can unlock with the microsoft account, some need you to have written down the recovery key

limber knotBOT
#

I guess

#

but the point still is: you can completely decrypt the drive so that you can access it outside of the PC being booted ab and then install whatever you want

#

which for some reason isn't possible on phones?

#

*up

#

nice German-phonetic brain fart there

magic river
#

UEFI upgrades can break bitlocker, not much difference

#

Break it as in require the recovery key (which is what logging in with microsoft account does, they store the key)

limber knotBOT
#

well yeah but there is a solution there which phones don't seem to have?

magic river
#

That solution would be going somewhere in settings and turning the encryption off before you switch to fastboot, I guess?

limber knotBOT
#

yes

magic river
#

I'm more sure that Google bans that 😛

limber knotBOT
#

that's what I would like to see which apparently is too much to ask

#

heck it could even be a menu in the recovery or something (that's how you can do it in windows, don't ask my how I know -.-)

magic river
#

The recovery partition is unable to access the DE-protected storage on the userdata partition. Devices implementing FBE are strongly recommended to support OTA using A/B system updates. As the OTA can be applied during normal operation there is no need for recovery to access data on the encrypted drive.

#

DE = Device Encrypted

#

FBE = File-based Encryption, required as of Android 10

#

Before that they just used dm-crypt 😄

#

It looks like if they put Gatekeeper (and all the possible login mechanisms) into the recovery they could probably unlock it still though

#

They just don't by policy, afaik

limber knotBOT
#

I see

magic river
#

Although some devices as of Android 11 (probably just the Pixel 4, 5, and 6?) actually keep the encryption keys out of main memory at all times so are even more limited in when/how you can decrypt the drive

#

The rest just have ME/PSP/TrustZone manage the secrets

#

Apparently Pixels DMA the encrypted data in to a coprocessor that has dedicated memory or something?

#

I have no idea how this shit works at this level 😛

limber knotBOT
#

yeah me neither, I just believe that it should be a solvable problem lol

magic river
#

Yeah, it looks like it could be if they basically put the unlock screen and the Gatekeeper system behind it in to the recovery

#

Which iirc my Essential phone actually did?

#

Or at least the TWRP for it did

#

I remember doing pattern unlock in TWRP before I could flash

golden gust
#

yea, I remember twrp supporting the security stuff at some point

#

you could throw you pin in and it would mount the user partition so you could go find your actual image to flash

magic river
#

I think that was before either Android 7 standardized full disk encryption or before Android 10 standardized the file-based encryption with device-level and user-level keys

#

One of those two changes broke that setup

#

btw with an unlocked bootloader and/or the option toggled in developer settings to let you access fastboot I'm pretty sure you can delete the partition that keeps a phone locked with a particular google account

#

afaik that anti-theft feature that makes you login with the original account if wipe the phone from recovery or too many password attempts is just a partition that stores the email

#

Not that it matters, if someone steals your phone whether they can use it or not doesn't help you 😛

void void
#

is it possible that using a mobile hotspot would route your traffic to another state?
and multiple people all around the united states with the same provider connecting to hotspot would have their traffic routed through the same ip block?

#

cg nat?

#

how can that be detected

golden gust
#

google it

#

sanely? er...

void void
#

not a hotspot

#

ik its not 100% accurate but

golden gust
#

even home broadband providers are using cgnat

#

if you mean, "can I a random person check if some IP is a cgnat", you can't, basically

magic river
#

On my phone things think I'm somewhere in Illinois iirc

void void
#

yeah

#

thatsd happening

golden gust
#

best you can do is google the isp and see if there is somebody complaining about it

void void
#

people in pencylbania being in texas from a geoip perspective

#

google isp?

golden gust
#

well, boils down to where the POP is

#

and geoip's accuracy can be shaky af

void void
#

heres something else weird

#

using maxmind ASN

#

all these ips have different isps?

golden gust
#

I know these days theres more info being fed into it, so, it kinda shows up as fairly accurate these days

magic river
#

VPNs these days sell "doesn't show up as a VPN" as a feature

#

So good luck there

void void
#

some are UUNET some are ATT-INTERNET4

#

some are COMCAST-7922

magic river
#

UUNET is Verizon, dunno why you'd see Verizon, AT&T, and Comcast when you're tethering

void void
#

these ips aren't showing as vpn or anything

#

just residential

twin lagoon
void void
#

ive got this guy who uses a hotspot and everytime he logs in he is at a different side of the country

#

^^^

twin lagoon
#

and yeah don't rely on geoip

void void
#

most vpns are just some company renting OVH servers

twin lagoon
#

no reputable vpn does that

magic river
#

No, most VPNs are buying access at residential ISPs

void void
#

🤔

#

ehh i doubt that

twin lagoon
void void
#

oh

magic river
#

That space is mostly for things like Netflix to have a local (to the ISP) cache but if you stick a VPN service in there it has residential ISP IP addresses so...

golden gust
#

Yea, but somewhat less of a major red flag for it using an ISPs network vs somewhere like OVHs which is probs already blacklisted by most places

void void
#

okay

#

people also can use hotspots to ban evade very effectively

#

am i outta luck there?

golden gust
#

pretty much, yea

twin lagoon
#

got an example IP?

void void
#

sure

magic river
#

IP bans are basically a joke anyway

twin lagoon
#

ip bans are a joke but blocking vpns / proxies from joining is less of a joke

void void
#

there is one big spot in el paso

golden gust
#

I was with one ISP and my IP changed every few dozen hours

#

(I mean, each time the router rebooted almost, which, like, yea)

magic river
#

CGNAT ruins them on accident for IPv4 and on IPv6 you'd have to figure out if a user has a /128, /96, /64, /48, or /32 so you know how many billions of IPs you need to ban

void void
#

gimme a min to scrape these

magic river
#

The only way to detect VPNs is blacklists, basically

twin lagoon
#

ip reputation services to the rescue

magic river
#

Which then you have to hope the person who figured out a particular IP was a VPN knew what they were doing

#

From that IP to you there is nothing to make it look like a VPN, you have to gather data on a large number of IP<->user pairs then look for IPs that have a lot of users

#

That could just mean it's a coffee shop or something but you're probably fine banning those too 😛

void void
upbeat falconBOT
twin lagoon
#

ok yeah those are pretty rough

#

quite a few get through getipintel and that's impressive considering the fact that's usually the go-to for residential ip finding

magic river
#

If those are residential IPs I would guess either the geoip is wrong or someone is telling their VPN to connect to Texas and keeps cycling it to get a new IP

void void
#

this is the player in question

#

that has their ip change all the time

upbeat falconBOT
void void
#

#

ATT-MOBILITY is the mobile branch

void void
#

minecraft needs more fingerprinting techniques 😢

magic river
#

Pretty sure VPN IPs can come from ATT-MOBILITY too

void void
#

there is a really shitty "fingerprint" you can do

#

its pretty bad tho just client settings + mouse sensitivity + client brand

#

which half of the time is default settings so useless

magic river
#

Time to go email the getipintel dude so you can give him money to use his service

void void
magic river
#

Then you can write a plugin to check every connection against it and pick an arbitrary number between 0 and 1 for the threshold for when you decide it's too likely to be a VPN and block it

void void
magic river
void void
#

they respond to my emails fast their service is epic

oh

#

yeah buuuut

void void

#

do these ips trip any antivpn?

#

time to try the best one (ipqualityscore)

#

First one I tried on abstractapi says not a VPN

void void
#

yeah same

#

damn

#

so its not a vpn buts abused

#

proxy check .io my fav doens't even check that

magic river
#

Perhaps they just have a lot of RATs

twin lagoon
#

getipintel generally gets the residential ones but uh

void void
#

whats their ratelimit like?

magic river
#

This looks less like VPN and more like hacked Windows machines and routers and shit running proxies

void void
#

these ips tho are mobile hotspot AT&T apparently

void void
magic river

My grandpa's laptop is probably one of those 😛

void void

void void
#

oh so like those channels

#

the lewd tv channels

magic river
#

Well online he was getting in to more explicit stuff

#

I don't help clean up his computer anymore 😛

void void
magic river
#

I got him a chromebook, anything he does with the old windows laptop I set up for him before that he is on his own

void void
#

chromebook is a good solution for old people

magic river
#

I've never seen him do any of the stuff 14 year olds do when the think they're secretly masturbating but everyone knows

#

Like going in to his room to use his laptop or spending too much time in the bathroom

#

So yeah, I think he just likes to watch 😛

void void
#

well

#

idk what to say

magic river
#

Anyway, that laptop is probably one of those ATT-MOBILITY IPs 😛

void void
#

how does getipintel work

#

it seems very abstract

magic river
#

Seems pretty easy to me

#

It doesn't give you any extra details, just the probability the IP is "bad" in a 0-1 range

void void
#

they do

magic river
#

I'd release a mod to spoof all those fingerprinting things to the same value

void void
#

web development is so cool

magic river
#

jesus fuck that is active

void void
#

browser fingerprinting is just like minecraft fingerprinting but better

magic river
#

I'm probably hard to fingerprint there too

Although if you aren't careful avoiding fingerprinting can be a fingerprint

It's Minecraft. It's likely a case of a botched shading.

Unsurprisingly, malware is typically made by the least scrupulous.

Just out of curiosity, as any of you considered minestom ?

wispy blade
#

minestom is more suited for minigame servers where you need a small base server

Naomi beat me to it

tribal basin
#

So if you wanna create your own gamemode you could possibly go for minestom and program your minigame ?

marble lark
#

But yeah their design philosophy is that it's easier to add the parts that you need than to disable/remove and handle features that you don't

#

Pretty much

You don't have to though, it's really up to you

Keep in mind that minestom requires you to build your own car, while Paper is more just painting it. There's a lot more work to it, but it really, really pays off if you're large enough and need that flexibility and have the time.

Yea, most countries have a process, theres generally a good number of requirements you've gotta meet in terms of road worthyness, at least over here, but, you can 100% build your own car
