The spi-nand driver for my router was changed (mediatek wrote a new one) and the new one actually detects and complains about errors when reading
But the old one used to flash the factory image wrote some of those "errors" in a way that is actually harmless
But that means after upgrading openwrt to a kernel that has the new driver it fails to read the wifi firmware since that's still on apparently the only original partition left on the device and that partition has these "errors"
So I have to flash a new installer/recovery image which as a part of the install step basically just reads the contents of that partition, blows it away, then writes them out again
