it's been so long since I've heard of someone refer to it that way
They actually found your email on GitHub and send a report to you?

use a laptop so you don't have to worry about that
updated to EAP at work already, but not at home, the old debug menu already feels clunky, lol
I don't know if it's a driver thing or EAP thing but on my laptop half the time it tries to pop up the autocomplete options the IDE freezes
is this a normal thing with IntelliJ lmao
What's the error?
I get a black popup window stuck on my screen until I kill it too, gets in the way of my terminal when trying to read PIDs for a kill command ๐
just use notepad
I downgraded to webstorm 2021.2.2 and so far it hasn't died so I think it's an EAP thing
Heads up: if you are familiar with X, the below is simplified to the point it hurts. Sorry about that, but as an X developer you're probably good at coping with pain.

Brrrrrr
wasdas?
since when does steam look like that
Fairly recent, I might be in the beta though
How about briish truck sim? Exploring your urban area
No idea when they did it but seemed to have been somewhat recent
At least, surprised me like a week or two ago when I first saw it
steam is slowly redoing their whole UI
I like the download and storage manager changes
I rarely open it anymore since so many games are doing their own thing now
Yea, I go in there once in a blue moon to update stuff but steam generally does it automatically
Figured I'd give a prod just getting internet back and all
ive heard they need a few extra truckers
UK: We don't need foreigners to drive our trucks
Also UK: We're now 100.000 truckers short
Theres a global trucker shortage
UK got more hit because brexit and can't have the foreigners taking our jobs
i mean true, maybe if companies made it an actual doable job it'd help
didn't we already see that one
There is an odd plus side is that wages are actually going up now, apparently, as people try to get all that they can
But, it's an old industry, and they've done a really good job of keeping newbies out
no one wants to be a truck driver in this day and age
its like those level 1 support guys in IT
Well, yea, and that's the joys
Like, apparently people get into it and disappear too because it's just not worth it
the only people its worth it for is people from low wage countries where they can do it a couple months a year and then go back home
Yea, which was a pretty good part of the shipping industry and the the entertainment industry
wasn't exactly a rare sight in the UK to see polish plates over here
my mom works for a transport company and she said theres barely anyone who speaks dutch from the truckers hah, all polish or slovenian and the like
people are like "they take all our jobs for cheap" but cmon bro no one else wants to do those jobs anyway
Not a surprise, the polish are pretty well known for being economic travlers over here
Well, it's catch 22, the cheap workers drastically bolstered the wages over here because it's too easy to pick up cheap workers especially as that industry is one which has always had a little flag on it to try to get people over, so, getting proper brits into the trucker job is like, complete ass because of the low wages so it pushed people out
ofc, preventing people coming over massively impacts the entire UKs infra, hence why they're allowing more, but, apparently it's slapped hualage groups in the face to start doing shit
its also a horrible job to do
Yea, defo not for somebody who wants to actually have a family and shit and be around
my dads friend is a trucker and hes constantly looking for something else cuz it's gotten so bad
shit job, shit wages, shit treatment
well he just does short travel, so he goes home in the evening
pretty sure that was a different one
most people who are there are only really there because they've invested too much of their lives or money to really duck out into something else, and some are so close to retiring in the next few years it's like, who cares
Also been fun too, as somebody basically said that there was a shortage of truckers to fill up gas stations
But, gov also said that stuff wasn't that bad and so theres no need to rush out to get it, as stuff will be kept topped up
and so we entered the toilet paper situation but with fuel
i saw on the news
xDD
arent your stores like half empty tho
cuz they cant get deliveries in
over exaggerated to a degree
Hi guys, does anyone know a powershell command or a program that allow me to see why my system (win 10) is eating 3.5GB of my ram?
Like, literally not even noticable at my local stores
taskmanager?
if you mean the system process, that's used for caching and shit too iirc
The task manager doesn't show all the processes..
they loved showing videos of the empty trays in the stores and stuff basically entire empty shelves
might just be media being media tho
use the proc viewer thingy from sysinternals
Well, newspapers wanna attack brexit heavily and this is an opportune time
idk why dutch tv would care about brexit though
Well, brexit is pretty huge in a sense because we where one of the first major players and we left, especially at a time when EU Skepticism is sorta like wavering around
yeah i suppose, not sure i fully support the EU cause either but eh thats more politics and a can of worms i'm not opening
apparently it exists something called rammap
ur a mac user right?
Yea
I dual boot windows for games but don't really use it often
I made a horrible mistake one day
Cat uses Mac, so 15 yo programs ๐คฎ
I hackintosh'd my desktop and kinda fell in love with the OS and the whole "people making software care about it more than linux", as well as the fact that it has a proper terminal environment and shit
yeah its a good OS and i'd honestly use it too if it didnt force you so hard into their own eco system and the price ofc
ded poor I see
Yea, I got my current machine bought for me buy I dude I was doing stuff for at the time
wow that's not bad
The machine I hackintosh'd had like 4G of ram and it was like 2015, so moving into the era where that was defo no longer enough
(and, that was it's max spec'd capacity, and so replacing it was like, bleh)
how do you fall in love with an OS that runs at 5fps in a VM tho?
Guy was willing to get my the tin can thing too, but, I just went for a 5k iMac
Cos I never really cared to run it in a VM ๐
and when I did it was before they made some changes which forced vSync
dont you need specific hardware for a hackingtosh?
(that and my hardware wasn't ultra great, so, I couldn't really fault it)
Kiiiinda
I mean, my wifi card didn't work but I didn't care at that point
i have to run macos in a vm so i can use xcode... which is so f'in stupid
Like, the hardware list is kinda meh but much of the "core" stuff is standard
like, if you have a common audio chipset you can get drivers for it easily
wireless is a bit more icky, intel and realtek NICs last I saw where reasonably well supported and pretty standard in hardware mobos at least at that time
Yea, defo not for the faint of heart unless you're building from a list of supported hardware
and linux... well its linux lol, gotta cut a leg and an arm off to sacrifice to the penguin god and you might get something that works and then spend another month to make it look decent and not something from 1990
lol, part of why I stopped using linux as a daily driver, especially as somebody who's pretty OH, SQUIRREL!
macos user taking iq test
Like, you'd have a reasonably well working desktop, and then you'd do an update and the GPU kmod would shit the bed
(7000)
So, you'd run around tryna figure out how to get your GPU working properly again
Or, you'd hit a case of seeing some pretty DE theme and wanting to toy with it so either you set up a VM to test, which, not great hardware and such at the time, I er... just installed it on my desktop and then had a ton of crap to clean out once I found out that it was actually kinda meh to use daily
people bitch about windows update breaking stuff but its still relatively mild compared to linux stuff lol
To be fair, with linux it's more oddball hardware than a linux issue as such
Mh.. Is it good having 2.8 GB of standby RAM?
Like, better experience with a driver which is actually open source but some headaches there
define "standby"?
It's not good, it's not bad
โ๏ธ
it's just memory which is being used for caching
It can be freed back to the OS as soon as it's needed
.g linux ate my ram
(DiscordBot) https://www.linuxatemyram.com/
Ok, ty
That's for linux, but, the general theory behind it still applies for most modern OSes these days
Windows is also doing the same thing
They should do the same link but for win
yes lets waste more money on domains
Except Windows is actually eating your RAM
just get more ram bro
Well, linux did that years ago and it basically started to be a common thing which people would ask
unused ram is wasted ram
So, when MS started to improve their stuff to be able to cache more and manage memory a bit more smarter, nobody really questioned what was going on bar the normies who'd see high memory usage if they cared to look (but, most don't)
solution: have 80 Google Chrome windows open at once

Eh, thanks anyway lol

Is there some kind of issue with the latest IJ release that is causing it to index dependencies each time the project is loaded?
I feel like there's an indexing bug with every release
have the same issue on my end

Yeah. If it was my project dependencies, that's fine, but it's like doing everything from IJ plugins.

and there used to be a plugin which you could use to automatically download plugins from BukkitDev back in the day
and one for SpigotMC
which even let you do file management
i don't remember their names though
auto updating is a pretty bad idea
autoupdating should be handled by the plugin itself and not by another plugin
isn't this pojav launcher ?
Laughs in mineager
that doesn't seem like a good idea at all ๐
Gonna make it a plugin one day once I rewrite it to Java/Kotlin
yes it is
.java16
Follow the guide for how to update to Java 16 here: https://paper.readthedocs.io/en/latest/java-update/index.html
you could try a vps
Launch was success but I couldn't see shit
it definitely wouldn't be profitable
virtual private money
lets not go there
My bequiet! fan is NOT being quiet!!!!
well ok do whatever
same boat gimple
I think that's dying too
would they even allow you to mine crypto on the vps?
but i think its not profitable
Nah it's just all my hardware is dying after 5 years of heavy use
Gonna start slowly replacing stuff
calculating every possible combination of sha256 until you get the right one
that's like 2^256 combinations iirc
3brown1blue has a great video about that
mining you don't have to do every possibility find possibilities until you get a certain number of 0s starting
It'd take billions of galaxies of billions of planets filled with billions of people each having access to a single computer with the individual computing power of Google, and even then it'd take more than the lifetime of the universe to calculate all sha256 hashes
Something like that
It's incomprehensibly big
for crypto you don't need every combination
quantum computer go brr
I know but someone said all sha256 hashes
So that's what I was talking about
Idc about crypto lmao
still writing an accounting webapp for it
what the dog doin
clean install i think
install is better but clean install just deletes the target folder
i just clean and package
google to find out what all of them do
Make a run config that runs clean install and then use F9 lol, clicking those goals separately sounds like hell
install will also place your plugin into your local maven repository, which is just basically wasting space unless your project has an API you'd like to use in other project
since none of my plugins are like that, i use package instead of install
yea i just use the command line ๐คทโโ๏ธ
build uses IJs built in compiler by default
https://maven.apache.org/guides/introduction/introduction-to-the-lifecycle.html for info on what each maven goal does
dependencies are already placed into the local repo even if you don't use install anyways
If you run one higher on the list (toward the bottom) all previous ones (going upward) will run
If you want a jar use package
Well, yea, everything downloads into maven local by default, needs to be on the disk somewhere
Install will plop it in your m2
install specifically installs your own project to the local m2 repo
yes that's what I was explaining earlier
Yes
ah yes yt names
yt names
Oh god pokimane is in Free Guy
wasn't there a bunch of streamers/yters in it
Yeah they do a clip show of streamers and such talking about how they don't kill NPCs anymore

very cool concept
and well executed
technical terms were way off as usual with movies like that but cant complain too much
autocomplete be like
locked behind full nitro I assume?
looks like it is
Do you not see the nitro icon
full nitro vs nitro classic
(like I have classic so was wondering if I'd have access to it)
Pretty sure it just shows the nickname part when you're on canary
That Chris Evans cameo though
does the button show up for you?
nope I just have the old nickname UI, not the server profile UI
Got my notification for role icons ~2ish weeks ago, yet they are barely out in less than a quarter of guilds I check out
Seems to show in every server for me
you on canary?
yeah
I'm on discord beta mobile and I remember seeing the per server pfps somewhere
hmm or not
It's not showing up on mobile for me either
i need this
time to get canary and nitro then
Anyone know why minecraft updated to java 16, instead of waiting for java 17 which will be lts?
why not
They wanted to update and 17 wasn't ready yet
Oh, so they will most likley be updating to 17 next version again
I bet 1.18 uses 17
it's gonna be fun having all those legacy plugins still modifying final fields with reflections break :)

Min
You can try using insights
Hey! which host would you recommend and why? Eventually I want to create a network
first 2 for dedi as they are pretty much the cheapest options for renting your own machines
later 2 for shared as they are able to honor aikar's flag by default which means they aint overselling too much and they both offer newer CPUs
ima oversell u
I would oversell you too but simple is priceless
i dont know advanced language :(
wat
"ovh hetzner for dedi, bloomhost, dedicatedMC for shared" i dont understand xd
ovh hetzner are both company names. They provide "dedicated machine" as in machine that you rent and own by you for the duration of the lease.
let's ugh hold your horse on "I want to build a network part" as 99% of server fails and shut down within first year so yeah good luck!
just make 100 servers then
I can't believe that this is actual gameplay from a real mod.
Today coming at you with the least efficient cake factory ever made.
Create is a Minecraft mod for Forge 1.14.4, with 1.15 to follow. It adds a variety of very useful building tools, as well as technology based on kinetics and rotational power. It is a free-time open-source project by a bunch of Minecraft players who love the creative aspect of ...
yeh it's pretty cool
WOW IS THAT CREATE
thank you :D
I hope you are ashamed of that
had to go for it
I once had an idea a couple years ago for a mod that allowed you to build similar stuff to what create offers
But then about a month ago, I found my old post and shot down my own idea with "Actually, now that I know a lot more about how Minecraft actually works, I don't think it would actually be possible (or rather, practical/viable) to actually create such a mod. It would require way too much time and effort for such a niche gain, especially since it wouldn't really be Minecraft anymore, and you'd also have to continually update it for each new Minecraft release."
Unsurprisingly, I made this response to my own post after I discovered Paper
But I was completely oblivious to the existence of Create until a couple days ago, which does exactly what I wished could be made.
that is even better in so many levels. I will try it next
I get a very strong feeling that Create and PaperMC aren't even close to compatible.
The two seem like they live in completely different worlds.
Like, Create is much more of a Space Engineers / Medieval Engineers type of thing in terms of mechanics, whereas Paper is trying to be vanilla Minecraft but way better
Comedic genius me sees plenty of missed opportunities like that ๐

So then the flu is no big deal and covid is "just like the flu" so it's no big deal either
Even if covid was "just like the flu" but everyone got it that would be devastating
But it all starts with thinking the flu is no big deal which is a problem
Get your flu shots people
i dont think i will
yeah imagine getting that extra mercury and microchips into your veins!

day #113 of trying to get abs: did 50 minutes of full body strength and conditioning (mostly upper body and core if im being honest tho), still a killer workout
45 minutes yesterday was no big deal, 50 minutes today was killer
Wasn't yesterday mostly upper body and core too?
is this the real ceo of getting abs?

So Tesla sold someone a used Model S they said had never been in an accident, owner had lots of problems with it and found out it had major structural damage repaired before he got it, sued Tesla for fraud. He won but now Tesla is suing him for 5x what he won in the first lawsuit for defamation and to force him to delete his social media posts about the first lawsuit
You're telling people the truth and it's really hurting my image

seems legit
btw Tesla's own documentation on the Model S showed it had been in a front end collision a few months before they sold it to him so it's not like he won a bogus lawsuit

Windows 10's default sounds are all incorrectly assigned. For example the OS has an actual error sound just like previous Windows operating systems, but it instead uses a generic notification sound

I guess it is sort of Java with some of C/C++ to be fair
microsoft java
its way more fun than java for sure
it isn't really Microsoft Java any more I think
its a lot nicer to write than java
now that .NET is open source
Have to concede that even though Java is my #1 language
C# was never really Microsoft Java
I mean, it was created around the same time they got in trouble for what they were doing with Java and was meant to fill the same space but it wasn't meant to be a clone
I guess you could say it used to be at least
Swing and JFX are pretty decent once you get the hang of it
(Unless you're talking about third party libs and not just the standard library)
java wasn't really intended for frontend change my mind
Well
CIL is a much more complicated bytecode (even before generics were added) which required the compiler to do more work but made it easier to write a fast JIT
(i know about applets, don't worry, i've had to write enough of those)
Java is technically supposed to fill the role of any sort of Application that C and C++ would be used for
And they have value types so don't have to stress their GC as much
but without the insane platform dependency
Meant .NET could get away with much simpler GC and JIT designs but still have good performance
I never got how that worked to be honest
as far as I'm aware neither Java nor C# actually have a stack at runtime
in theory both should technically be as fast as each other since neither actually uses the stack architecture that their bytecode specifies when they're actually run
well eventually at least once all the optimizations are done
Both are stack based VMs sure
Basically JVM bytecode was designed to be fast for an interpreter while CIL was designed for a JIT
oddities of language design I guess
michealsoft
The JVM will have different instructions for adding ints, shorts, floats, doubles, etc while CIL just has add
But the surrounding instructions for that add make it clear what types you're operating on (you just pushed them to the stack, after all) and the JIT can easily take that whole load, add, store snippet and replace it with a bit of JIT'ed code it has cached
CIL was designed for a JIT
You would think they'd use a register based bytecode if they really wanted to do that but instead they shot themselves in the foot XD
primitive generics when ๐
I've been reading the JEPs but i wonder how many years those will take
I can't remember if that's the Valhalla one
Register allocation for a stack machine is a pretty simple operation and means your design scales with however many host registers you have available
Is paper lagging bad rn??
I think it is tho so probably soon
Register VMs are kind of a pain
You would have thought Java would use a register VM though since iirc that is faster for an interpreter
to be honest I'm a little surprised since I thought stack -> register translation was insane
But I guess they were also trying to run it on a bunch of different CPUs and OSes so the more generic thing made more sense
Java's Interpreter technically isn't really an Interpreter so that doesn't apply to it I think
Register allocation by graph coloring can be expensive but gives basically the ideal result
Register allocation by linear scan is pretty fast and usually isn't that much worse
Register vs Stack only makes your language slower if you're emulating said registers and stack in your VM
register allocation is my middle name
Java's interpreter isn't an interpreter? What do you mean?
the JVM Interpreter has a really odd design in a way
JavaScript duh
sorta functions more like a JIT
i dunno but there's one which would allow primitive types to exist as type arguments and another which allowed for creating new primitive, struct-like, passed-by-value types. all pretty standard in general but for java
The linear scan design wasn't really known until 1999 btw so that makes the original JVM design even more surprising
The JVM interpreter definitely used to be just a regular interpreter
it takes every possible bytecode in the Java specification and compiles it to native platform code essentially
that legacy interpreter does still exist in the JVM too
I know V8 and such don't really do normal interpreters, they basically do templates of native code they piece together to match the instruction flow
it just doesn't use it when your application is run
Yep Java basically does what V8 does but even more extreme in a way
I think that's also the true reason for the startup overhead for Java applications too iirc
Advantage of doing that vs a normal interpreter (which your compiler would turn in to "templates of native code they piece together to match the instruction flow") is that you're running everything through your JIT logic so stack frames and other metadata are the same for when you jump back and forth between that and your JIT
Why do some people show up as bots?
They're on IRC
I'm not sure if that's exactly what Java does but from what I've seen in its source the "Interpreter" is really just an array of bytecode keys mapped to chunks of machine specific code
and it does some insane stuff the JVM engineers did to chain bytecode execution through native CPU jumps after the first bytecode is run
That chaining when you're writing normal C/C++ is called writing a threaded interpreter
It doesn't mean actual threads or anything
I know yeah
iirc it's called threading cause the bytecode you run is "threaded" to the next
The interpreter logic is threaded through the bytecode handlers instead of always jumping back to a top level loop with a switch statement
and every instruction sequence ends with a fetch and jump to the next instruction
yeah description checks out

yep just googled
Can't seem to find an detailed description of the JVM Interpreter anywhere else but on wikipedia for some reason which refers to it as a Templating Interpreter:
A template interpreter maintains a large array of bytecode (or any efficient intermediate representation) mapped directly to corresponding native machine instructions that can be executed on the host hardware as key value pairs,[15][16] known as a "Template". When the particular code segment is executed the interpreter simply loads the opcode mapping in the template and directly runs it on the hardware.[17][18] Due to its design, the template interpreter very strongly resembles a just-in-time compiler rather than a traditional interpreter, however it is technically not a JIT due to the fact that it merely translates code from the language into native calls one opcode at a time rather than creating optimized sequences of CPU executable instructions from the entire code segment. Due to the interpreter's simple design of simply passing calls directly to the hardware rather than implementing them directly, it is much faster than every other type, even bytecode interpreters, and to an extent less prone to bugs, but as a tradeoff is more difficult to maintain due to the interpreter having to support translation to multiple different architectures instead of a platform independent virtual machine/stack.
That's how Spidermonkey works, pretty sure V8 does too
how is 10:45pm not night then
I'm convinced people who design their interpreters like this are masochists
They do it because they already have a JIT
just realized that, I did a dum and read that as midnight
It reuses the machine code generation and stack frame management and such from the JIT but starts executing code immediately instead of waiting for optimization passes and such
In Java's case they did it before the JIT was a thing I think
but that seems to be the outlier
It's probably faster than a normal interpreter too since they have more control over native instruction generation and can do some simple pattern matching to turn sets of instructions into a block of native code instead of just doing them one at a time
I swear to god I'm going to write the Elshout compiler as one of my upcoming projects (And probably overshoot the deadline)
lmaoo
the stuff we do for performance
The main reason for it is so they can write less code
That stack frame sharing I keep mentioning ๐
they can write less code
excuse me what
i'll help, lol
Means they don't have to write all that shit twice and either try to keep it in sync or write tools to convert between different formats for when they switch from interpreter to JIT or bail back to interpreter for unexpected paths or debuggers
@cedar gyro hello
yeah just checked the Java team doesn't rely on C1 or C2 for their Interpreter at all
they straight up do nearly everything in Assembly
ah i see
not exactly sure what a Stack "Frame" is in this context
I'm assuming it just refers to objects you push onto and pop off a stack
So in C your compiler handles your stack based on OS and/or CPU defined ABIs
For a JIT you have to do the same thing, the C compiler doesn't do it for you
It's the stack size, layout, format, overflow handling, etc
Stacks... kind of exist in hardware
Like, your CPU has stack management instructions
well by hardware I meant stuff like PCs and all
But your C compiler injects a bit of code that runs before your main that sets up that stack
I am aware that embedded systems do have stacks bbut I didn't realize PCs had that too xd
ah I see
I would've thought that was the OS's job but I guess the Compiler can do that too
LLVM calls it compiler-rt, iirc it's also what handles landing pads and such for exception handling for C++
I guess it probably stands for compiler runtime
Yeah
stuff like this is pretty fascinating tbh
It also has things like 128-bit int support, double to long on 32-bit CPUs, etc
aside from that you also raised my IQ by like 10 points today now I'm at -50IQ thanks :D
reminds me of when I thought runtime meant interpreter lel
also @wispy blade is that the entire Elshout specification
just curious
almost
cuz we have int, double, char and arrays of them (technically an int is just a double without floating points)
iirc gcc/gnu ld has this too, its called crt0.o and idk what it does
