#

UK: We don't need foreigners to drive our trucks
Also UK: We're now 100.000 truckers short

golden gust
#

Theres a global trucker shortage

left swift
#

They gotta remove UK from euro truck sim now

#

Make it cost money to get there

golden gust
#

UK got more hit because brexit and can't have the foreigners taking our jobs

worn ember
#

i mean true, maybe if companies made it an actual doable job it'd help

marble lark
golden gust
#

There is an odd plus side is that wages are actually going up now, apparently, as people try to get all that they can

#

But, it's an old industry, and they've done a really good job of keeping newbies out

worn ember
#

no one wants to be a truck driver in this day and age

#

its like those level 1 support guys in IT

golden gust
#

Well, yea, and that's the joys

#

Like, apparently people get into it and disappear too because it's just not worth it

worn ember
#

the only people its worth it for is people from low wage countries where they can do it a couple months a year and then go back home

golden gust
#

Yea, which was a pretty good part of the shipping industry and the the entertainment industry

#

wasn't exactly a rare sight in the UK to see polish plates over here

worn ember
#

my mom works for a transport company and she said theres barely anyone who speaks dutch from the truckers hah, all polish or slovenian and the like

#

people are like "they take all our jobs for cheap" but cmon bro no one else wants to do those jobs anyway

golden gust
#

Not a surprise, the polish are pretty well known for being economic travlers over here

#

Well, it's catch 22, the cheap workers drastically bolstered the wages over here because it's too easy to pick up cheap workers especially as that industry is one which has always had a little flag on it to try to get people over, so, getting proper brits into the trucker job is like, complete ass because of the low wages so it pushed people out

#

ofc, preventing people coming over massively impacts the entire UKs infra, hence why they're allowing more, but, apparently it's slapped hualage groups in the face to start doing shit

worn ember
#

its also a horrible job to do

golden gust
#

Yea, defo not for somebody who wants to actually have a family and shit and be around

worn ember
#

my dads friend is a trucker and hes constantly looking for something else cuz it's gotten so bad

golden gust
#

shit job, shit wages, shit treatment

worn ember
#

well he just does short travel, so he goes home in the evening

void void
golden gust
#

most people who are there are only really there because they've invested too much of their lives or money to really duck out into something else, and some are so close to retiring in the next few years it's like, who cares

worn ember
#

yeah

#

basically

#

automated delivery wen

golden gust
#

Also been fun too, as somebody basically said that there was a shortage of truckers to fill up gas stations

#

But, gov also said that stuff wasn't that bad and so theres no need to rush out to get it, as stuff will be kept topped up

#

and so we entered the toilet paper situation but with fuel

i saw on the news

#

Well, newspapers wanna attack brexit heavily and this is an opportune time

worn ember
#

idk why dutch tv would care about brexit though

golden gust
#

Well, brexit is pretty huge in a sense because we where one of the first major players and we left, especially at a time when EU Skepticism is sorta like wavering around

yeah i suppose, not sure i fully support the EU cause either but eh thats more politics and a can of worms i'm not opening

golden gust

Yea, I got my current machine bought for me buy I dude I was doing stuff for at the time

warm anchor
#

wow that's not bad

golden gust
#

The machine I hackintosh'd had like 4G of ram and it was like 2015, so moving into the era where that was defo no longer enough

#

(and, that was it's max spec'd capacity, and so replacing it was like, bleh)

worn ember
#

how do you fall in love with an OS that runs at 5fps in a VM tho?

golden gust
#

Guy was willing to get my the tin can thing too, but, I just went for a 5k iMac

#

Cos I never really cared to run it in a VM ๐Ÿ˜›

#

and when I did it was before they made some changes which forced vSync

worn ember
#

dont you need specific hardware for a hackingtosh?

golden gust
#

(that and my hardware wasn't ultra great, so, I couldn't really fault it)

#

Kiiiinda

#

I mean, my wifi card didn't work but I didn't care at that point

worn ember
#

i have to run macos in a vm so i can use xcode... which is so f'in stupid

golden gust
#

Like, the hardware list is kinda meh but much of the "core" stuff is standard

#

like, if you have a common audio chipset you can get drivers for it easily

#

wireless is a bit more icky, intel and realtek NICs last I saw where reasonably well supported and pretty standard in hardware mobos at least at that time

worn ember
#

fair enough

#

i dont really care enough to go through the trouble

golden gust
#

Yea, defo not for the faint of heart unless you're building from a list of supported hardware

worn ember
#

and linux... well its linux lol, gotta cut a leg and an arm off to sacrifice to the penguin god and you might get something that works and then spend another month to make it look decent and not something from 1990

golden gust
#

lol, part of why I stopped using linux as a daily driver, especially as somebody who's pretty OH, SQUIRREL!

worn ember
#

lol

#

i literally have to google everything i do in linux

toxic bone
#

macos user taking iq test

golden gust
#

Like, you'd have a reasonably well working desktop, and then you'd do an update and the GPU kmod would shit the bed

toxic bone
golden gust
#

So, you'd run around tryna figure out how to get your GPU working properly again

#

Or, you'd hit a case of seeing some pretty DE theme and wanting to toy with it so either you set up a VM to test, which, not great hardware and such at the time, I er... just installed it on my desktop and then had a ton of crap to clean out once I found out that it was actually kinda meh to use daily

worn ember
#

people bitch about windows update breaking stuff but its still relatively mild compared to linux stuff lol

golden gust
#

To be fair, with linux it's more oddball hardware than a linux issue as such

granite slate
#

Mh.. Is it good having 2.8 GB of standby RAM?

golden gust
#

Like, better experience with a driver which is actually open source but some headaches there

worn ember
#

define "standby"?

golden gust
#

It's not good, it's not bad

toxic bone
#

โ˜Ž๏ธ

golden gust
#

it's just memory which is being used for caching

#

It can be freed back to the OS as soon as it's needed

#

.g linux ate my ram

limber knotBOT
granite slate
#

Ok, ty

golden gust
#

That's for linux, but, the general theory behind it still applies for most modern OSes these days

granite slate
#

They should do the same link but for win

worn ember
#

yes lets waste more money on domains kek

lament patio
#

Except Windows is actually eating your RAM

worn ember
golden gust
#

Well, linux did that years ago and it basically started to be a common thing which people would ask

worn ember
#

unused ram is wasted ram

golden gust
#

So, when MS started to improve their stuff to be able to cache more and manage memory a bit more smarter, nobody really questioned what was going on bar the normies who'd see high memory usage if they cared to look (but, most don't)

I once had an idea a couple years ago for a mod that allowed you to build similar stuff to what create offers

#

But then about a month ago, I found my old post and shot down my own idea with "Actually, now that I know a lot more about how Minecraft actually works, I don't think it would actually be possible (or rather, practical/viable) to actually create such a mod. It would require way too much time and effort for such a niche gain, especially since it wouldn't really be Minecraft anymore, and you'd also have to continually update it for each new Minecraft release."

#

Unsurprisingly, I made this response to my own post after I discovered Paper

But I was completely oblivious to the existence of Create until a couple days ago, which does exactly what I wished could be made.

magic river
#

CIL is a much more complicated bytecode (even before generics were added) which required the compiler to do more work but made it easier to write a fast JIT

wispy blade
#

(i know about applets, don't worry, i've had to write enough of those)

marble lark
magic river
#

And they have value types so don't have to stress their GC as much

marble lark
#

but without the insane platform dependency

magic river
#

Meant .NET could get away with much simpler GC and JIT designs but still have good performance

marble lark
#

as far as I'm aware neither Java nor C# actually have a stack at runtime

#

in theory both should technically be as fast as each other since neither actually uses the stack architecture that their bytecode specifies when they're actually run

#

well eventually at least once all the optimizations are done

magic river
#

Both are stack based VMs sure

#

Basically JVM bytecode was designed to be fast for an interpreter while CIL was designed for a JIT

marble lark
#

oddities of language design I guess

toxic bone
#

michealsoft

magic river
#

The JVM will have different instructions for adding ints, shorts, floats, doubles, etc while CIL just has add

#

But the surrounding instructions for that add make it clear what types you're operating on (you just pushed them to the stack, after all) and the JIT can easily take that whole load, add, store snippet and replace it with a bit of JIT'ed code it has cached

marble lark
#

CIL was designed for a JIT
You would think they'd use a register based bytecode if they really wanted to do that but instead they shot themselves in the foot XD

little frost
#

primitive generics when ๐Ÿ˜”
I've been reading the JEPs but i wonder how many years those will take

marble lark
magic river
#

Register allocation for a stack machine is a pretty simple operation and means your design scales with however many host registers you have available

edgy matrix
#

Is paper lagging bad rn??

marble lark
#

I think it is tho so probably soon

magic river
#

Register VMs are kind of a pain

#

You would have thought Java would use a register VM though since iirc that is faster for an interpreter

marble lark
magic river
#

But I guess they were also trying to run it on a bunch of different CPUs and OSes so the more generic thing made more sense

marble lark
magic river
#

Register allocation by graph coloring can be expensive but gives basically the ideal result

#

Register allocation by linear scan is pretty fast and usually isn't that much worse

marble lark
#

Register vs Stack only makes your language slower if you're emulating said registers and stack in your VM

toxic bone
#

register allocation is my middle name

magic river
#

Java's interpreter isn't an interpreter? What do you mean?

marble lark
#

the JVM Interpreter has a really odd design in a way

foggy veldt
#

JavaScript duh

marble lark
#

sorta functions more like a JIT

little frost
magic river
#

The linear scan design wasn't really known until 1999 btw so that makes the original JVM design even more surprising

#

The JVM interpreter definitely used to be just a regular interpreter

marble lark
marble lark
magic river
#

I know V8 and such don't really do normal interpreters, they basically do templates of native code they piece together to match the instruction flow

marble lark
#

it just doesn't use it when your application is run

marble lark
marble lark
magic river
#

Advantage of doing that vs a normal interpreter (which your compiler would turn in to "templates of native code they piece together to match the instruction flow") is that you're running everything through your JIT logic so stack frames and other metadata are the same for when you jump back and forth between that and your JIT

nimble berry
#

Why do some people show up as bots?

magic river
#

They're on IRC

nimble berry
#

I don't see Pluralkit

#

Ah

marble lark
#

and it does some insane stuff the JVM engineers did to chain bytecode execution through native CPU jumps after the first bytecode is run

magic river
#

That chaining when you're writing normal C/C++ is called writing a threaded interpreter

#

It doesn't mean actual threads or anything

marble lark
#

iirc it's called threading cause the bytecode you run is "threaded" to the next

magic river
#

The interpreter logic is threaded through the bytecode handlers instead of always jumping back to a top level loop with a switch statement

marble lark
#

and every instruction sequence ends with a fetch and jump to the next instruction

Can't seem to find an detailed description of the JVM Interpreter anywhere else but on wikipedia for some reason which refers to it as a Templating Interpreter:

A template interpreter maintains a large array of bytecode (or any efficient intermediate representation) mapped directly to corresponding native machine instructions that can be executed on the host hardware as key value pairs,[15][16] known as a "Template". When the particular code segment is executed the interpreter simply loads the opcode mapping in the template and directly runs it on the hardware.[17][18] Due to its design, the template interpreter very strongly resembles a just-in-time compiler rather than a traditional interpreter, however it is technically not a JIT due to the fact that it merely translates code from the language into native calls one opcode at a time rather than creating optimized sequences of CPU executable instructions from the entire code segment. Due to the interpreter's simple design of simply passing calls directly to the hardware rather than implementing them directly, it is much faster than every other type, even bytecode interpreters, and to an extent less prone to bugs, but as a tradeoff is more difficult to maintain due to the interpreter having to support translation to multiple different architectures instead of a platform independent virtual machine/stack.

magic river
#

That's how Spidermonkey works, pretty sure V8 does too

marble lark
#

I mean

#

at that rate you might as well just write a JIT for your language

potent fossil
marble lark
#

I'm convinced people who design their interpreters like this are masochists

magic river
#

They do it because they already have a JIT

void void
marble lark
#

oh

#

xd

magic river
#

It reuses the machine code generation and stack frame management and such from the JIT but starts executing code immediately instead of waiting for optimization passes and such

wispy blade
#

but yeah

#

elshout compiler wenโ„ข๏ธ

marble lark
#

but that seems to be the outlier

magic river
#

It's probably faster than a normal interpreter too since they have more control over native instruction generation and can do some simple pattern matching to turn sets of instructions into a block of native code instead of just doing them one at a time

marble lark
#

lmaoo

marble lark
magic river
#

The main reason for it is so they can write less code

#

That stack frame sharing I keep mentioning ๐Ÿ˜›

marble lark
#

they can write less code
excuse me what

magic river
#

Means they don't have to write all that shit twice and either try to keep it in sync or write tools to convert between different formats for when they switch from interpreter to JIT or bail back to interpreter for unexpected paths or debuggers

tardy storm
#

@cedar gyro hello

marble lark
#

they straight up do nearly everything in Assembly

marble lark
#

I'm assuming it just refers to objects you push onto and pop off a stack

magic river
#

So in C your compiler handles your stack based on OS and/or CPU defined ABIs

#

For a JIT you have to do the same thing, the C compiler doesn't do it for you

marble lark
#

ah ok

#

wait what

#

oh

#

TIL stacks also exist in hardware

magic river
#

It's the stack size, layout, format, overflow handling, etc

#

Stacks... kind of exist in hardware

#

Like, your CPU has stack management instructions

marble lark
#

well by hardware I meant stuff like PCs and all

magic river
#

But your C compiler injects a bit of code that runs before your main that sets up that stack

marble lark
#

I am aware that embedded systems do have stacks bbut I didn't realize PCs had that too xd

marble lark
#

I would've thought that was the OS's job but I guess the Compiler can do that too

magic river
#

LLVM calls it compiler-rt, iirc it's also what handles landing pads and such for exception handling for C++

marble lark
#

I guess it probably stands for compiler runtime

magic river
#

Yeah

marble lark
#

stuff like this is pretty fascinating tbh
